Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.

In a previous paper,l a method was suggested for determining the depth to a bed in the simple case of a uniform overlying layer of constant thickness. The main purpose of the present paper is to show how a slight modification of that method has been used to interpret specific data obtained in the upper peninsula of Michigan by the staff of the Depart- ment of Mathematics and Physics of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. The method of Tagg2 has also been used on the same data, thus furnishing a comparison of the two methods, as well as a method of using the two methods jointly. The method of measuring the apparent resistivity is that suggested by Wenner,3 and illustrated in Fig. 1. A current I enters the earth at the positive pole C and leaves it at the negative pole D. "Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."

The extra information brought by further drilling may seem necessary to achieve control over block grades if elementary estimation techniques are used. However a geostatistical study of an Australian deposit shows that better estimation techniques at the end of the first drilling campaign are sufficient to achieve required control.Subsequent drilling would be essentially wasteful.

"This paper discusses the effects of magnetic field and internal radiation on the melt flow and solidification morphology during solidification processing of oxide crystals for optoelectronic and remote sensing applications. The numerical solution of the integral differential equation characterizing the internal radiation and the magnetohydrodynamic equations describing the magnetic and transport phenomena is obtained by applying the combined discontinuous and continuous finite element method. The results show that both internal radiation and an externally applied magnetic field can have important effects on the melt flow and solidification behavior during the melt processing of oxide materials.IntroductionOptical single crystals are widely used in optical and electronic devices. These crystals are often grown from high temperature oxide melts under strictly controlled conditions. As in the well-known single crystal growth processes for semiconductor wafers, thermal gradient in the melt is a major contributing fuctor to the oxide melt pool. Unlike the semiconductor single crystal growth processes, however, the oxide melt is semitransparent and internal thermal radiation plays an important role in redistributing the thermal energy in the melt pool. Our recent experience with pilot-scale plant measurements also shows that the oxide melt is electrically conducting, although its electrical conductivity is considered much lower than the liquid metal or semiconductor melt.The fact that the oxide melt is absorbing and emitting in the thermal radiation frequency range makes it difficult to study the thermal energy transport in the melt pool. This is because thermal radiation is governed by a hyperbolic differential equation, which is different from those describing the transport processes in liquids. Also, our understanding of how thermal radiation interacts with other transport mechanisms such as convection and conduction is rather limited at point in time, in particular in high temperature oxide melts for optical single crystal processing."

In relation to dust, there are three categories of continuous miner faces depending on the type of ventilation and whether or not a machine-mounted dust scrubber is used. These are— 1. Mining machines with dust scrubbers used with blowing face ventilation 2. Mining machines with dust scrubbers used with exhaust face ventilation 3. Mining machines without scrubbers used with exhaust face ventilation The approach to dust control is somewhat different in all three of these. However, there are many dust control features (such as the need to provide adequate airflow) common to all continuous miner sections. For workers at roof bolter faces, there are two dust sources: 1. Dust from the continuous miner when it is upwind. 2. A malfunctioning dust collector on the bolter, which allows dust to escape DESIGN AND OPERATION OF MACHINE-MOUNTED SCRUBBERS [Almost all new continuous miners are equipped with scrubbers. The apparatus described in this paper was designed by the writer, in the year 1869, for use in the laboratory of the " American Silver Steel Works," at Bridgeport, Conn., where only the vacuum-pump was erected ; but on two subsequent occasions I have had the combined vacuum-pump and table-blowpipe constructed as represented in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a general elevation of the apparatus, the air-chamber being sectioned vertically; Fig. 2, a plan of the air-chamber; Fig. 3, a vertical sectiotnal elevation of the vacuum-pump, the section being on line C L), of Fig. 4, which is a horizontal section on line A B, of Fig. 3. The vacuum-pump is constructed of copper, and consists of a vacuum-chamber, E, supported upon the upper expanded end of a vertical pipe, Q. The vacuum-chamber is provided with four nozzles, C, F, I, D (Fig. 4), two of which are shown in section at A, B (Fig. 3). Early stage design of driven piles primarily relies on static analysis based on one or a combination of total and effective stress approaches, the latter known as the method to estimate axial capacity. A database of 85 piles driven in the Puget Sound Lowland region and monitored at End of Driving (EOD) and Beginning of Restrike (BOR) was compiled along with capacities estimated using the CAPWAP procedure. Established soil profiles based on borings with standard penetration tests (SPT), cone penetration tests, and geologic maps were matched with their corresponding unit shaft resistance profiles from the CAPWAP procedure and resulted in more than 1,200 observations. In this study, eight new models were developed to predict the coefficients at EOD and BOR, based on the corresponding USCS categorization. Each coefficient model is formulated using a three-parameter exponential function, calibrated to capture the profile of coefficients with depth. These models could benefit the designer by providing them with a simple, empirical model that accounts for soil type and setup in a smooth, continuous function with depth. A parallel analysis was performed to assess the accuracy and variability of the formulated prediction models to facilitate implementation in load and resistance factor design (LRFD). INTRODUCTION The design of the axial capacity of driven piles during the planning stages of a project is typically based on a static analysis approach. The goals of this approach are to predict the components of capacity, consisting of the shaft and toe bearing resistances, and to assess project concept feasibility and preliminary lengths. In most cases, this analysis is based on empirically-developed methods, such as the total stress method, also known as the method (Tomlinson 1987) or the effective stress method known as the method (Esrig and Kirby 1979; Fellenius 1991). Many other methods, such as those based on in-situ test results exist and rely on correlations of blow counts from the standard penetration test (SPT), and cone tip and sleeve friction resistance from the cone penetration test (CPT), to shaft and toe pile resistances (Schmertmann 1978; Meyerhof 1976; Nottingham and Schmertmann 1975; Nordlund 1963; Eslami and Fellenius, 1997; De Ruiter and Beringen 1979). Although these methods were generally developed using data from specific geological regions, they are often recommended in national design manuals (e.g., FHWA, Hannigan et al. 2006).

Testwork was done with two different adsorbents, Dowex-Minix gold-selective resin and activated carbon, to detemine their relative performances with regard to gold recovery from clarified low-grade solution employing a fixed-bed operation. The mill discharge from the milling-in-cyanide operation at a Witwatersrand gold mine was used as feed to the adsorption columns. A small amount of gold was leached during the milling process, so that this solution simulates, to a certain extent, a low-grade solution representative of a heap-leach operation. A speciation of the feed solution was done to establish which metal complexes were present in the milling-in-cyanide solution. This information was necessary to interpret metal loadings on the resin, as base metal cyanide species and their respective charges have an effect on the final gold loading capacity of the resin. Equilibrium isotherms were established for both adsorbents to estimate the rate of adsorbent flow anticipated for this specific feed solution. Breakthrough profiles were obtained at two different superficial linear velocities for each adsorbent. Mass transfer zone heights determined from the test work and the elution/regeneration time requirements were used to size a 150 m3/h full-scale plant for both adsorbents. A counter current configuration of adsorption columns, using three columns, should be suitable to recover gold effectively and to produce an effluent with a gold concentration below 0.01 mg/l. Based on the results obtained from the breakthrough tests, a preliminary techno-economic comparison was done between the resin-in-solution and carbon-in-solution options for the recovery of gold from low-grade solutions. This study indicated that the capital expenditure for a carbon-in-solution plant would be about 33 percent higher than that of a resin-in-solution plant. The operating expenditure for a resin-in-solution plant is expected to be only 60per cent of that for a carbon-in-solution plant. Keywords: resin-in-solution, carbon-in-solution, heap leach.

Blasting techniques are widely used to fragment rock masses into smaller pieces. Numerical modelling is an efficient method employed by many researchers in the blasting field. It is difficult for a conventional continuum-based approach such as the finite element method (FEM) to model the rock fragmentation by blasting and the expansion work on the rock by explosive and its detonation products. In this paper, the particle blast method (PBM) was employed to model the behaviour of the detonation and a bonded particle model (BPM) was used to model the brittle material to be blasted. A mortar cylinder with a centrally placed hole for the explosive was modelled and the results were compared to the experimental data. The blast process from crack initiation to fragment formation was analysed. The influence of coupling ratio on fragmentation was also investigated.CITATION:Yi, C and Johansson, D, 2015. "Mine Gallen is a zinc-rich pyritic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit that occurs in a fault-bounded block of intermediate volcanic rocks. The block is completely surrounded at the present erosion level by the eastern part of the Lac Dufault granodiorite. The volcanic succession includes a massive feldspar porphyry that is probably a subvolcanic intrusion, an andesitic flow unit and lapilli tuffs. The latter are variably sericitized and pyritic, especially in the vicinity of the massive sulphide into which they grade.The ore body is predominantly pyritewith local sphalerite contents as high as 20%; minor chalcopyrite and trace galena are disseminated, but are found mainly along late cleavage. Most ore is a breccia of massive to banded pyrite-sphalerite, veined by massive and complexly banded sulphides. These structures formed by repeated blocky jointing, cracking, sealing, healing and annealing as hydrothermal fluid repeatedly passed through a developing sulphide mound. The deposit is interpreted to have grown on the seafloor in a manner similar to active mounds in the Galapagos rift.RESUME La Mine Gallen exploite un gisement de sulfures massifs volcan géniques comprenant essentiellement de la pyrite riche en zinc. Bacteria can play a key role in the processing of 'difficult' ores. Bioleaching opens the way to potentially extract copper from vast amounts of otherwise hard to process refractory low-grade chalcopyrite. In my talk I will outline our research philosophy to develop bioleaching as a Precision Processing unit process step. In our view, Precision Processing is a sophisticated approach to mineral processing where the ultimate goal is to measure and characterise the ore body in-ground and in real time during mining, allowing the down-stream unit processes (bioleaching, in this case) to be continuously tailored and tuned via feedback and feed-forward controls to obtain the highest possible recoveries at the lowest possible cost and environmental impact. I will describe some of the work that we are undertaking to better understand the interfacial phenomena underlying the fundamental bioleaching process with the aim of coming to a Precision Processing approach. We use techniques such as interfacial electrochemistry (scanning electrochemical microscopy, SECM), AFM, zeta potential measurement, and synchrotron science to elucidate the parameters that drive bacterial selectivity and adhesion, bacterial metabolism, and dissolution and precipitation processes for model systems and real chalcopyrite ores. As examples of our research, I will discuss in some detail our method to produce and characterise micro-patterned CuxS - silica thin films as model substrates for electrochemical and bacterial adhesion work and our approach to the interfacial chemical characterisation of extracellular polymeric substances of bio-active bacterial cells. I will also cover some of our recent findings relating to measurement and interpretation of bacterial adhesion on sulfidic substrates and its implications for bacterial adhesion and substrate selectivity. After having identified and discussed crucial leaching parameters, such as pH, Eh, T, [Cu2+], and [O2], the talk will go on addressing some of the early achievements and challenges encountered in our work to design and prepare low-cost, rugged sensing devices that allow the in-situ (in this case, in-dump or in-heap) localised measurement of these parameters. I will conclude my talk by painting the picture of how the work of our group might contribute to realising the dream of transforming bioleaching into genuine high-tech Precision Processing of minerals. The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

THE injury data and experience in this bulletin are presented in three general sections. The first section contains general and detailed data relating to 1948 injury experience in bituminous-coal and Pennsylvania anthracite mines, separately and combined into totals for all coal mines. The related employment, worktime, production, and productivity data are given in each breakdown of the statistical data. Tables 1 through 22 constitute a subsection and present statistics on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, detailed and major causes of injuries, injury records of the coal-producing States, distribution of injuries by part of body, and distribution of injuries by days of disability. Tables 23 through 45, the second subsection, present injury experience in bituminous-coal mines by various selected factors of physical or operating conditions that ma contribute to the occurrence of injuries. The degree of mechanical loading, productivity, size of mine by number of men working and by tonnage mined, thickness of bed, length of shift, number of shifts, type of cap lamps, rating of mine as gassy or nongassy, type of ventilation, and combinations of these factors influencing mine safety are presented in this group of tables. Similar data on Pennsylvania anthracite mines are listed in tables 46 through 63, which comprise the third subsection. The second section of the report contains the generalized annual injury records of bituminous-coal, Pennsylvania anthracite, and all coal mines from the earliest available data through 1948. Tables 64 through 97 list the number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, injury rates, and causes of injuries on an industry basis, the long-term injury records of each coal-producing State, and the related employment, worktime, and production data.

The use of water stemming with small explosive charges has been successfully developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. Further study has been started to explore additional applications and uses for water stemming. Work has been focused in the areas of rock excavation and perimeter blasting techniques. This ongoing work is being conducted internally as graduate and undergraduate level research. A paper describing the general technique for use with boulder fragmentation was published in last year’s proceedings. The excavation work took place in the form of both small bench and trench shots while pre-split and trim shots comprised the perimeter-blasting portion. The excavation work was located in both the Roubidoux sandstone formation and the Jefferson City dolomite formation. Hole diameters ranged in size from 1.5” to 3” diameter and powder factors ranged from l/l 0 to l/3 of the conventional charge weight. The water was used to both couple the explosive charge with the surrounding borehole, as well as stemming. No other stemming material or products were used. The method of using water stemming in perimeter blasting was found to work well. However, when used for excavation purposes, adequate rock movement was not obtained. The rock was often split, but not fragmented. The airblast was surprisingly low, but the ground vibrations were excessive. This is not the case with trim shots, and therefore this method appears ideal for splitting purposes, especially in areas where people do not like to stem the tops of the holes, and where airblast and vibrations are of concern. Water coupling dramatically increases splitting and fracturing. However, fragmentation is not only fracturing but also the movement and swelling of the material. As the charge weights are reduced with this method, sufficient gas volume is not created to cause this necessary movement and swell, which is critical in rock excavation. This explains why its successful application was limited to perimeter blasting applications.

A complex mixture of hydrated reaction products is obtained from hydrothermally treated refractory cements and castable concretes. TGA can be used both to identify the product phases in the mixture and to determine a quantitative relationship among the phases. When reacted mixtures contain compounds that decompose simultaneously, or nearly so, additional assumptions must be introduced in order to develop a quantitative phase analysis. It is the purpose of this paper to examine some of these assumptions and to demonstrate their application, particularly to refractory cement systems.

A study of flocculation of ultra-fine coal particles by ultrasonic waves was investigated on a laboratory scale.The coal suspension was dilute, with low ionic strength, and at pH 6·2.When a stationary sonic wave is set up in a solution containing suspended coal particles, it is believed that high and low pressure regions are alternately established at the half wave-length of the sonic wave and this resultsin the migration of coal particles towards the low pressure regions.As expected the flocculation is more effective as to frequency and the power of the ultrasonic waves is increased.The shape and size of the test equipment are also important variables.

In considering blasting it is necessary to consider the drilling and explosives since one is generally concerned with the total cost of muck of a certain size in the pit or through the crusher. To get a current idea of the drilling situation in open pit mines plotted in Fig. 1 are the drilling costs per ton of material vs. hole diameter for rotary drill holes in large limestone, iron ore and taconite operations. The exception is the 2-in. diam hole which was drilled with a percussion drill in limestone.
