Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its prin- cipal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctua- tions, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic informa- tion and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that produc- tion rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship.

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground " caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time.

Simulation models have been widely used to analyze the operations and characteristics of a variety of systems. Such models mimmick a projected reality by analyzing the interaction of the events, transactions, and facilities which combine to make up the system. The models are structured as a computer representation of the system components and their logical, precedence and timing relationships. The operation of the system is then simulated over some finite time interval to gather analytical and staistical data. This paper presents a method whereby bulk handling systems, either actual or proposed, may be analyzed by means of simulation models to project the enconomic consequences which may be expected from the system over some future time interval. An example is given to illustrate the construction of bulk handling simulation models, the derivation of performance data, and the analysis of the information with an eye to effective decision making.

"Industry practice for high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) assessment and sizing relies on tests using pilot-scale machines with 0.7–1.0 m roll diameters. Typically 1–10 t of sample are required, depending on the level of study and resource complexity. This is challenging during early-stage development, which hinders incorporating HPGR into designs. With support from the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, researchers at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia developed bench-scale piston–die press tests (PPTs) that correlate to pilot- and full-scale HPGRs. This paper describes a new regression model to estimate the HPGR-specific throughput rate using both PPT results and an HPGR database. In this investigation some preliminary results are reported about the electrochemical oxidation of CO using goldbased encapsulated nanoparticles grafted on conducting substrate. The investigation has been planned in four steps: 1. production of Au(111) substrate and modification with self assembled monolayers; 2. synthesis and embedding of nanoparticles; 3. grafting of encapsulated nanoparticles on electrode substrates; 4. investigation of CO electroxidation on the modified electrode. The systems were characterized by means of various techniques (spectroscopic, microscopic, and electrochemical methods), obtaining information about SAM's structure and morphology, size and composition of nanoparticles and electrochemical behavior of modified electrodes.

Increasingly, geotechnical data are being collected for various types of coal development projects. In many cases, a specific design concern is addressed. However, many data collection programs are not intended to immediately support mine design activities or to resolve a specific concern. The following discussion describes some current geotechnical approaches in mine planning, development of reserves, and peripheral activities. Types of Data Collection Programs Geotechnical data collection is increasingly becoming a part of standard coal exploration programs, performed along with stratigraphic evaluations and coal quality tests. The aims of such programs vary. The purpose of the exploration may be to fill out the portfolio on a block of reserves that is to be sold, leased, or held for potential future development. In such a case, a generic suite of geotechnical data are collected. The resulting engineering reports may touch on the more well known mining problems of the area, but detail may be lacking. The geotechnical data are mostly intended to enhance the saleability of the package. Mine design alternatives are generally not addressed.

FOREWORD-Back in October of last year, I approached three of the largest commercial banks in the country to solicit an article about the role of commercial banks in mine financing. "We'll be delighted to cooperate with you in any way we can," was the stock response. As the September 1975 deadline approached, however, every bank officer I had contacted almost a year earlier informed me that he couldn't write such an article be- cause of "prior commitments," "an excessive workload," or "vacation schedule," etc. This was not a total surprise. Any commercial banker will be truly delighted in talking with you, if you have a good mining prospect, a good reputation, a good batting average in your business-and if he has the capital you want to borrow. But what happens when banks themselves are illiquid? Much as they would like to help you, they simply can't. And most of them clam up.

Chalcopyrite and pyrite are among the major gold bearing minerals in the world. The gold content in chalcopyrite and pyrite varies from 0.02 to 200 ppm and 0.01 to 20 ppm, respectively. Apart from gold, chalcopyrite is also the primary source of copper. Thus, the recovery of gold and copper are often associated with the recovery of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Flotation is one of the most successful methods applied to beneficiate chalcopyrite and pyrite. The success of a flotation process depends on an appropriate choice of the flotation collector used to achieve the desired selectivity. A thorough understanding of the atomic structure of the predominantly exposed mineral surfaces can immensely aid in developing highly selective collectors that can exploit both the physical and chemical characteristics of these surfaces. In the present study, density functional theory calculations within the plane wave framework are used to understand the surface structure and reconstruction of the most stable chalcopyrite (001), (100), (110) and (112) and most stable pyrite (100) surfaces. The chalcopyrite (001) and (100) metal-terminated surfaces undergo significant reconstruction and result in metal-metal bond formation in the sub-surface layer while the surface layer is replaced by S-atoms. On the other hand, the (001) and (100) S-terminated surfaces show S—S disulfide bond formation upon relaxation, which are consistent with literature reports. The chalcopyrite (110), (112) surfaces and pyrite (100) surface undergo rearrangement, but no reconstructions in terms of metal-metal or disulfide bond formation are observed on these surfaces. Na atualidade a produção e a utilização de DRI estão aumentando nos países desenvolvidos, principalmente devido à redução do preço do gás natural e do sucesso da nova tecnologia de extração de gás de xisto. Os custos operacionais e os problemas ambientais são, efetivamente, os fatores tecnológicos importantes a serem considerados na otimização da produção de DRI. Portanto, o teor de carbono do DRI tornou-se essencial em virtude da capacidade de gerar energia química no banho de aço, complementando assim a eletricidade em FEA, e as contribuições exotérmicas da oxidação de Si e C nos conversores LD. Este trabalho faz parte de um programa completo de cooperação entre a companhia de mineração Samarco e o Grupo de Siderurgia da PUC-Rio, lidando com as equações cinéticas da metalização e carburização simultânea em fornos de redução direta. Para este efeito, o reator foi dividido em três zonas internas: Redução, Transição e zona de resfriamento. Além disso, também foram consideradas três regiões concêntricas: periférica, média e centro. Á partir desses resultados, para um tipo de pelotas RD específico, mistura de gases utilizados nas instalações industriais e similar flui-dinâmica do processo, as equações cinéticas de metalização e carburização foram estabelecidas para cada zona. Um programa computacional METCARB, totalmente baseado nessas equações cinéticas, foi então concebido. Finalmente, uma validação adicional procedeu-se tendo em conta duas corridas operacionais industriais.

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

The enthusiasm with which individuals have participated in mineral exploration in the development of this country testifies to the fact that there was once a very real probability of making a worthwhile discovery. Over the years, the discovery and subsequent exploitation of the accessible ore deposits have made the finding of new deposits progressively more difficult. Present day mineral exploration has evolved from the lone prospector with the grubstaker behind him to a very costly and complex business, involving large sums of money and a staff of experts in the fields of exploration technology. Exploration today must be carried out on a large scale to be profitable. With the involvement of large amounts of capital, there has been a good deal of interest in methods of optimization of the allocation of the resources of a firm 'engaged in mineral exploration. As a step toward this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firms operations so as to optimize its profit objective or more simply, to make exploration more efficient and effective.

Grelhas constituem o fundo móvel dos setores da esteira sem fim das máquinas de sinterização. Diferentes tipos de materiais têm sido utilizados para a fabricação dessas peças, desde aços resistentes ao calor e inoxidáveis até ferros fundidos de alta resistência, tendo como parâmetro de controle a perda de massa ou redução da espessura das grelhas. A necessidade do aumento do ritmo operacional das sinterizações ao longo dos anos tem levado ao aumento da substituição de grelhas, contrapondo ao aumento da produtividade das sinterizações. Desta forma, a adequação da resistência ao desgaste abrasivo e a minimização de transformações microestruturais em função as condições de utilização dos materiais desses componentes mecânicos têm sido alvo do desenvolvimento de materiais para essa aplicação. Nesse trabalho é discutido o desenvolvimento de materiais aplicados em grelhas de sinterização, visando o aumento da sua vida útil, a partir do melhor entendimento dos mecanismos de degradação e da realização de ensaios laboratoriais de desgaste abrasivo, corrosão a quente e fadiga térmica. Dentre cinco alternativas avaliadas, a concepção de material com matriz ferrítica e adição de elementos químicos formadores de carbonetos mais estáveis a elevadas temperaturas e formação de camada mais aderente de óxidos apresentou melhores resultados, gerando uma perspectiva de aumento da vida útil da ordem de pelo menos três vezes em relação à condição atual.

A review and comparison is made of the circuitry utilized for dc crane control systems. Anti-parallel three phase full wave thyristor bridges for dc motor reversing and speed control are compared with a single three phase full wave thyristor bridge for speed control and either contactor or static switching for reversing control to obtain complete four quadrant operation for crane material handling. In recent years the Harnischfeger Corporation has developed a solid state adjustable voltage control system to control the speed and direction of dc motors for crane applications and handling materia1.1 Shunt wound dc motors are utilized and speed is controlled in the motor base speed operating region at constant torque by a thyristor, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), adjust- able armature voltage supply. The three phase thyristor bridge is the power controlling element of the dc adjustable voltage control. ELECTROTORQUE is the Harnischfeger Corporation registered trade name for this type of drive system. By controlling the gating signals or firing pulses to the thyristor bridge SCR's the dc output voltage can be varied over a wide range. This range is limited only by the magnitude of the ac applied voltage. To obtain operation of the motor in both directions two thristor bridges are connected in an anti-parallel arrangement. A typical schematic for two anti-parallel connected three phase SCR bridges is shown in Figure 1.

"Abstract - The Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is located 265 km south of Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Nunavut Territory, Canada, in the west-central Slave structural province. The Izok deposit is owned 100% by Inmet Mining Corporation and represents one of the largest undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. The Izok deposit is hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks of late Archean age. The hanging-wall stratigraphy includes additional felsic volcaniclastic rocks, andesitic and basaltic flows, thin sulfide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sedimentary rocks. The felsic volcanic rocks are intruded by intermediate dikes and sills, followed by gabbroic dikes and sills. Both intrusive suites are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to the overlying flows. All lithologies are subsequently cut by younger, irregular, granitic pegmatite and diabase dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks are regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene hornfels grade. The massive sulfides occur within a large (kilometer-scale) Na-depleted sericitic alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hanging-wall rocks to the deposit are characterized by zones of muscovite- biotite-sillimanite, lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite, and locally intense silicification and sodium metasomatism. All lithologies have been affected by younger Ca-metasomatism. As currently defined, the Izok deposit comprises a cluster of five complexly zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central West, Central East, and Inukshuk lenses. The first four lenses are amenable to open-pit mining, whereas the Inukshuk lens will require underground development. The total indicated mineral resource presently stands at 16.5 million tonnes with a grade of 2.2% Cu, 11.4% Zn, 1.1% Pb, and 60 g/t Ag. Inmet Mining Corporation is presently reviewing the economic feasibility of developing the property."

The deposition of ceramic materials onto substrates is of special interest in the development of surface related technologies. Research interest has been placed on using thermal plasma as the deposition method, specifically inductively coupled plasmas. Many different modifications to the same basic principle of deposition have been performed through out the materials research community. Such a technique may have many advantages over more conventional techniques, such as high deposition rates, high surface area coverage, clean energy source, no contamination from electrodes and operation near atmospheric pressures. Materials deposited vary from simple oxide systems like TiO2 to more complex structures like ternary oxides and nitrides. This paper reviews recent developments relative to the inductively coupled plasma deposition of thin films.

In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. Parmi ces aspects se trouvaient : Les panneaux de la couche 2 devaient être placés environ 25 m au dessous de la couche 4 courte taille ; la couche 4 avait été remplacée par la couche 5 longue taille ; la hauteur de taille proposée pour la couche 2 courte taille était 5.5 m, tandis que la couche 4 avait été exploitée à 4 m. La couche supérieure de la région (couche 5) avait été exploitée entre 1.5 et 2.2 m de hauteur ; il était difficile de prédire les conditions de taille, avec environ 95m de matériaux cassés ajoutant une charge morte à la plaque de séparation entre les couches 2 et 4 et un chargement cyclique causé par des bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau 2-4. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2. Ces résultats furent utilisés pour dresser les spécifications techniques pour la fabrication de l’équipement nouveau. La taille fut commissionnée avec succès en août

YOUR committee asks that I speak today on the relations of the engineering profession to public affairs. That takes in a lot of ground. This being a cheerful occasion, I will assume that I should exclude the engineer's function as a taxpayer. This being a nonpartisan occasion, I will assume that I should not refer to his voting emotions in 1940. Perhaps what was in the minds of your committee was the application of engineering thought to the confusions of the times. That is also a lot of ground. I fear, however, its boundaries disappear in mirages and rainbows on all sides. Now any entry of the engineer into public affairs involves his breaking into the fields of the sociologists, the economists, and the politicians. However I don't know why, seeing the difficulties these professions are having, they should not welcome a little help.

Recent advances in personal computer technology allow movies of various types to be made and displayed on PC and Macintosh computers. An interesting application of this movie technology is animation of computerized geological models. These movies, which can be most easily constructed along rows, columns, and benches of block models, allow an ore body to be more easily and quickly visualized than the traditional method of flipping back and forth through various sections.
