Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering Diamond synthesis has attracted a great deal of interest because of its exceptional properties and various applications. In this study, the chemical catalytic vapour deposition (CCVD) method was used to synthesize diamond films using acetylene as carbon source and hydrogen as carrier gas at a temperature of 1000°C, and their thermodynamic stability was studied. Photographic analysis revealed that these products are diamond films, Ramman spectroscopy confirmed that they are graphitic while confocal laser scanning microscopic image analyses proved that these diamonds films have structural defects due to iron impurity from the catalyst precursor. The quantity of diamonds films produced is also proportional to the acetylene to hydrogen ratio but these films are larger in size at lower acetylene to hydrogen ratio. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that transformation of these materials begins at 25°C but could not be used to determine if a temperature range below 25°C exists. The stability of these CCVD-synthesized diamonds also increases below 25°C when stored at different temperatures.

Coal desulphurization by flotation is often difficult due to the surface oxidation of coal pyrite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to obtain detailed information about the surface oxidation of pyrite. Fresh pyrite surfaces were found to be hydrophilic, and to turn hydrophobic after initial oxidation, with oxidized products such as polysulphide FeSx and free sulphur. The oxidized products on the pyrite surface were reduced by an electrochemical method, returning the surfaces to a hydrophilic state and thus increasing the separating efficiency of coal from pyrite by flotation. The paper describes a variety of existing techniques and equipment which when combined together permit faster and cheaper drilling of shafts in soft to medium strength formations. Drilling fluid circulation, methods of hole stabilisation and bit design, including the advantages of flat bottomed and conical bits, shrouds and skirts, tungsten carbide, long tooth and disc cutters are considered. The principles of rock chip transportation and bottom hole cleaning are described together with a new and very efficient fluid circulation system which was invented by the author.

In a recent review1 of the iron-oxide activity of simple open-hearth type slags containing lime, magnesia, silica, and iron oxide, it was established that activity values were lacking in the range of slag composition most interesting to open-hearth operators. That is, laboratory experimental results were not available for simple slag compositions having basicity ratios ranging from about 1.5 to 4.0 and iron-oxide concentrations ranging from about 10 to 30 pct. However, in order to estimate iron-oxide activities for the range of slag compositions of interest to open-hearth operators, activity values were calculated using ionic concepts of slags by following the treatment of Flood and Grjotheim.2 A study of these data indicated that the desired slag compositions were probably not obtained due to the limited solubility of the basic constituents lime and magnesia. Thus, it was decided to make additional heats equilibrating molten carbon-free iron with slags containing MnO, P2O5, and A12O3 in percentages commonly found in open-hearth refining slags, and to examine the liquid slag field over a greater composition range than that of the simple slags studied previously. The ranges of the constituents used in the present study are summarized as follows: Metal Pct 0 0.070-0.201 PctMn 0.005-0.142 Slag Pet CaO 24.45-41.90 Pct MgO 3.23- 9.21 Pct MnO 1.13- 9.62 Pct FeO 20.08-48.7 Pet Fe2o3 2.23-10.14 Pct SiO, 3.51-28.50 Pct P2O5 0.23- 3.65 Pct A12O3 0.43- 3.38 The experimental procedure consisted of equilibrating the slag and metal in an induction furnace provided with a carbon-arc slag heater as described previously by Winkler and chipman.3 The data obtained were used to establish both the iron-oxide activity values and the activity coefficients for FeO and MnO in the open-hearth type slags. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION I) Iron-Oxide Activity of Open-Hearth Type Slags—The iron-oxide activities of various iron-oxide contents of the open-hearth type slags, as calculated from the oxygen content of the metal by the method of Taylor and Chipman, 4 are plotted against the molar ratio of bases to acids in Fig. 1. The data represent slag-metal studies carried out in the temperature range 1530" to 1700°C. For the purpose of this study, the constituents CaO, MgO, and MnO are assumed equal on a molar basis in their effect on the iron-oxide activity; and, PO2,5 is calculated as an equivalent to SiO2 and A12O3 on a molar basis. The total iron content of the slag is calculated to FeO and is represented by the symbol (FeO) The points presented in Fig. 1 represent the results of this investigation for iron-oxide slags containing between 1 and 8 mol pct MnO and less than about 2 mol pct each of A12o3 and PO2,5 The curved lines shown in Fig. 1 represent the results of the summary1 of the iron-oxide activities of simple slags of the system (CaO + MgO) - SiOz - (FeO),. The solid portions of the curved lines represent experimental data, and the broken portions represent iron-oxide activities calculated from ionic concepts of slags. The iron-oxide values of the open-hearth type slags of this study are in good agreement with the values of the simple iron-oxide slag system. Only a slight modification is indicated. The results of this study suggest that the line for 20 mol pct (FeO), should be lowered slightly in the basicity range 1.5 to about 3.

A necessidade da aplicação dos aços de alta dureza é recorrente nas indústrias de mineração, visto que esses equipamentos são submetidos continuamente a esforços mecânicos. Por isso o objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar uma amostra de aço Hardox 450 HB soldada pela técnica undermatching com a finalidade de se avaliar a sua soldabilidade, dureza e microestrutura, qualificando a sua predisposição para o uso fabril. Realizou-se o ensaio de composição química, o ensaio metalográfico e o de microdureza afim de se comparar com os dados de fabricantes deste aço e avaliando com os parâmetros de soldagem aplicados a sua susceptibilidade à propagação de trincas. Observou-se que a microestrutura revelada é a martensita com conformação de grãos mais refinados entre o metal de base e o metal de adição. Através da análise química percebeu-se que de acordo com o valor do carbono equivalente, este aço possui média soldabilidade.

The negative "plastic Poisson's ratio" suggested in earlier studies of Mus deformation is analyzed, and the results are verified experimentally with NaCl crystals. In the early stages of deformation where the primary {110}(110) slip predominates, compression along. the [001] direction produces contraction along the lateral [011] direction plus a compensating expansion along. the [100] direction. With additional strain, the primary slip is supplemented by secondary {111}(110) slip so that the above contraction diminishes and a more typical deformation appears. THE shape change of bee and fee crystals deformed by compression or tension along [011] has been analyzed in some detail and shown to be responsible for the development of peculiar microstructures in [011] fiber textured polycrystals of these metals.1'3 This paper concerns the unusual shape change accompanying [011] compression of NaCl crystals. It is the direct outgrowth of an earlier investigation of the deformation of manganese sulfide inclusions in steel.3,4 In that investigation, cylindrical specimens of steel containing small oriented crystals of MnS were prepared by powder metallurgy and plastically compressed. The flow of the inclusions was determined relative to that of the steel by sectioning the composite and measuring the length-to-width ratio L/W of the inclusion and diameter-to-height D/H ratio of the steel cylinder on the plane of section. These L/W ratios, normalized by dividing by the initial LO/WO ratio of the inclusion, were compared with the normalized D/H ratio of the steel cylinder. Of particular interest here are the deformation characteristics of an inclusion oriented with [Oil] parallel to the compression axis. When measurements were made on sections parallel to the (100) plane of the inclusion, the L/IV ratios were only slightly in excess of unity, indicating a high apparent hardness of the [011] criented inclusion. However, measurements on a (011) plane of section resulted in L/W ratios which were much larger, Fig. 1. These observations prompted an analysis of the strains resulting from slip in an MnS crystal compressed along [011.]. CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS Manganese sulfide has the NaCl crystal structure, and the predominant slip system is {110}(110). A secondary system, {111}(110), has also been reported.= {110}(110) Slip. When a crystal is subject to a uni-axial compressive stress 011 along [011], four slip systems, (101)[101.], (101)[101.], (110)[i10], and (110) [ 110], will be equally stressed with a shear stress t = 0.2 011 while the other two {110}( 110) systems will be unstressed. The normal strain En along any reference axis n resulting from slip is given by Schmid's law: en = S COS ?in COS in ?i 111 where ?in and +in are the angles between n and the i slip direction and n and the i slip plane normal, respectively, and where ?i is the shear strain on the i slip system, For the four active slip systems above, the cos ?in cos +in terms are all equal when the reference axes are the [011] compressive axis, [011] and [ 100]. Eq. [I.] therefore reduces to en - cos ?n cos +ny [2] where y =S?i for all slip systems. [3] is that they predict that the strains in the [011] and [011] directions, resulting from {110}(110) slip, are equal and of the same sign. Blasting generates undesirable ground vibration with adverse effects on humans, the environment, and structures. Numerous studies have used various techniques including machine learning (ML) to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV) caused by blasting in surface mines. These studies used the validation-set approach to evaluate the performance of their predictive models. In this study, Random Forest (RF), Gaussian Process (GP), and Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) were applied for the prediction of PPV using data from a large open-pit gold mine in Ghana. An ensemble model based on a stacked generalization approach was then built on these three base models to significantly improve the PPV prediction performance. The model evaluation was done using repeated tenfold cross-validation which resolves the challenges with the validationset approach for small datasets. The dataset used in this study comprised a total of 196 measurements taken from different blasting operations. R-squared ( R2 ), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the model performance. The results obtained from these models revealed that all the base models did not significantly outperform each other. However, the stacked generalization approach had a better performance, with RMSE = 0.12, R2 = 0.96, and MAE = 0.07. This approach presented an improvement over the existing methods and will be useful for highly accurate predictions of ground vibration during blast design. The application of this model will be useful for efficient and effective blast design.

The worldwide budget for nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 58 percent in 2004 from the 2003 budget, according to Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes two years after a five-year period of declining spending for mineral exploration (1998 to2002). Figures suggest a subsequent 27 percent increase in budgeted expenditures from 2002 to 2003. For the second consecutive year, all regional exploration budget estimates were anticipated to increase. The worldwide budget for gold exploration achieved about 50 percent of the total amount budgeted in 2004.This was 68 percent, or US$715 million, higher than the reported 2003 budget. The 2004 worldwide exploration budget estimates for copper increased by 70 percent, orUS$237 million, to US$577 million from the 2003 budget. The budget for nickel exploration increased 52 percent, or US$89 million more than in 2003. The 2004 exploration budget for other mineral targets (primarily cobalt, heavy minerals, industrial minerals and silver) increased114 percent, or US$118 million.

Oxygen-18 exchange between gaseous oxygen, held at a pressure of 125 mm Hg in a PL-IORh chamber, and splzeres of a Fe2O3 containing three or less grains was determined from 9000 to 1250°C. Isotope equilibrum on crystal surfaces appears to be quickly established, and the rate-determining factor is self-difiusion confbvrning to the relation D = 2.04 esp(- 77,900/RT) sq cin sec-'. Changing sphere diameters caused no detectable variation in diffusion coefficients. Oxygen ions diffuse faster than cations at low temperatures, but a crossover may occur at about 1150°C. INVESTIGATIONS by Davies et al.' and Himmel et al2 have suggested that the mechanism of iron oxidation above 600°C involves a predominance of cation migration in the wüstite (FeO) and magnetite (Fe301) layers and oxygen-ion migration in the hematite (a Fe2O3) layer. Evidence for little cation migration during hematite growth consists of: 1) the disappearance of radioactive-silver markers, presumed to vaporize from the oxide-gas interface, and 2) a large discrepancy between parabolic rate constants for magnetite oxidation and those calculated from Lindner's3 data for cation self-diffusion, D:, using Wagner's theory.4 Reversing the calculations gave anticipated self-diffusion coefficients, D:, for oxygen ions of 3.6 x 10-9 sq cm sec-1 at 1100°C and 5.9 x 10-10 sq cm sec-1 at 1000°C. Since then Kingery et a1.5 reported three values for oxygen-ion diffusion in polycrystalline, sintered hematite. These were obtained near 1200°C, at an oxygen pressure of approximately 150 mm Hg, and could be represented by the Arrhenius expression, Dg = 1 x 10 11 exp(-146,000/RT) sq cm sec-1. Extrapolation to temperatures below 1100°C infers that oxygen ions are less mobile than cations. This contradicts the aforementioned oxidation evidence and also coble7s study of the initial sintering of hematite. From the latter, apparent diffusion coefficients for the slowest rate-controlling species could be calculated, and fair agreement was found with an extension of Lindner's data for cation diffusion. Fig. 1 depicts such comparisons graphically. Three points have been included for the determinations of Himmel et al. on cation diffusion in large, natural hematite crystals surrounded by pure oxygen at atmospheric pressure. No dependence on crystal log raphic direction was noted. Since the value of 10-l4 sq cm sec-' at 1000°C actually represents an upper limit, one might interpret that there is a small decrease in D: when single crystals are employed. On the whole, however, cation diffusion appears relatively well-defined,* while the few results tension to lower temperatures. After having gained experience measuring oxygen-ion diffusion in certain glasses7 and in the corundum oxide, a Cr2O3, the purpose of this work was to determine D; values for hematite and thus possibly assist a mechanistic understanding of the kinetics of the oxidation and reduction of solid iron oxides. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Material. Hematite powder of moderately high purity was received from the Columbian Carbon Co. An accompanying lot analysis listed 0.03 H2O, 0.008 weight percents, with the remainder Fe2O3. Subsequent treatments were ball milling, drying, prepressing, and hot-pressing for 60 min at 1350°C under 5000 psi. Since graphite dies coated with a slurry of alumina were used for hot-pressing, the surrounding atmosphere at temperature was sufficiently reducing to form some magnetite on the outer surface of each cylinder. After removing any attached alumina, a stabilizing anneal of 50 hr at 1300°C in oxygen was added. The final product was nonmagnetic and exceeded 97 pct of the density (5.24 g cm-3) usually given for FezO3. EXTENSIVE research and development was performed on the manganese-copper vibration-damping alloys to determine the relationship between the properties of the alloys and variations in composition, fabrication, Mid heat treatment. Mn-Cu alloys with unusually high specific damping capacity, 20 to 25 percent at a stress of 5,000 psi, have also the following useful properties: Tensile strength, 90,000 to 110,000 psi; yield strong, 60,000 to psi; elongation, 20 to 25 percent; hardness, 90 Rockwell B; and fatigue limit at, 28,000 to 30,000 psi. Both standard and special methods of testing were employed to obtain data on strength, modulus, hardness, resistivity, dilatation, micro-structure, crystal lattice, and damping capacity. The extensive tabular and graphical data on these properties are presented for alloys containing 50 to 85 percent as quenched d solution) and after various aging treatments. Expansion coefficients for all Mn-Cu solid solutions are graphed and a dilatometer study of contraction during aging is reported. Although high damping capacity is associated with aging to precipitate a-Mn from solid solution, with a cubic-tetragonal transformation and with the occurrence of antiferromagnetic ordering in Mn-Cu alloys, a tenable theory of the damping mechanism has not been reached.

"SynopsisAccording to the overlying rock strength and thickness of 10 shallow coal seams in China, the strata are classified into four types: weak and laminated strata (hereinafter referred to as WL), weak and massive strata (WM), strong and laminated strata (SL), and strong and massive strata (SM). The four types of strata, together with longwall panel height (M), panel length (L), and seam depth (H) are factors that influence the loads on hydraulic power supports. Principal component analysis was used to study the seven influencing factors. It turns out that seam depth (H) is multicollinear with WL, WM, SL, and SM. Thus the enumerated seven factors are divided into two models. In Model 1, six factors; panel height, panel length, and layer thickness of the four type strata are involved. In Model 2, three factors; panel height, panel length, and seam depth are included. Using multivariate regression analysis, two equations to calculate loads on supports are obtained for each model. The equations were applied to shallow coal seams. The equation of Model 1 is more accurate than that of Model 2, but Model 2 could be further used in deep coal seams. The equations were coded through VB programming to simplify the calculation.IntroductionTo ensure coal production in the long term, the focus of coal mining has been gradually shifted to the western areas of China in recent years due to rich coal resources in this region. Most of the coal seams in this area are shallow but the support loads are abnormally high. In these circumstances, the chock loads estimating methods used in the past do not work. If the rated working resistance of a support is larger than needed, the shield is unable to fully perform, while a lower working resistance would lead to accidents like shield crushing or even casualties. This problem is frequently found in shallow coal seams such as Shenfu-Dongsheng, Yulin, Tuha, Lingwu etc. (Zhang, 2011). Thus, to ensure safety and efficiency during mining, the estimation of support loads and selection of supports are of great significance."

"This paper describes novel methods to enhance the flow dynamics of a mechanical flotation cell that can be applied to an existing installation. There are several reasons to alter the flow dynamics. The most common motivation is to improve the metallurgical performance of the cell, for instance, to improve the flotation recovery in particle size ranges that are normally difficult to recover.The flow dynamics enhancements are associated with the geometry of the rotor-stator area and additional features in the tank. The rotor-stator area has been modified to provide more concentrated turbulent kinetic energy or respectively more pumping efficiency with less attrition to the slurry. The tank can be fitted with various geometrical features, aimed to create a desired particle suspension profile. Depending on the targeted particle size range and application, badly selected or designed features can also have a negative effect on the metallurgical results.Besides new flotation equipment, the enhancements can be applied to existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension, tank sanding and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented, concerning both flow variables and metallurgy.The common factor to above-mentioned enhancements is the use of modern computational fluid dynamics tools in the design phase, as well as the validation of the obtained CFD results in laboratory and production scale. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up.The paper demonstrates the effects of various flow geometries on the mixing profiles and metallurgical results of existing mechanical flotation cells. It shows how modern computational fluid dynamics analysis can be used to screen and select different approaches before carrying out costly trial-and-error experiments in plant scale."

A systematic study of groundwater conditions at eight underground mine sites exhibiting a wide range of groundwater qualities throughout Australia has been completed at the WA School of Mines. This has resulted in a new corrosivity classification for groundwater driven corrosion processes for cement grouted cable strand used in the Australian underground mining industry. The new corrosivity classification is simple to use and corrosion rates may be predicted from readily obtained in situ measurements of groundwater dissolved oxygen.

The emergence of Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) in the Canadian mining sector has been read by many as a positive governance innovation. Negotiated directly between mineral resource developers and Aboriginal communities with limited government interference, IBAs serve to manage impacts associated with a mining project and deliver tangible benefits to local communities. Notwithstanding their increasing use and significance, limited systematic analysis has been undertaken to determine whether they are, in fact, working. This paper reports on the effectiveness of a number of IBAs negotiated in support of three northern Canadian diamond mines, drawing on evidence from time-series data, key informant interviews, and focus group meetings in Yellowknife and Dettah, NWT, and Kugluktuk, NU. While some deficiencies were apparent and perceptions of effectiveness varied somewhat by Aboriginal community, the IBAs were generally found to be meeting their objectives, especially with respect to the delivery of benefits. For Aboriginal communities affected by mineral development in the Canadian North, this represents a significant change to typical outcomes of the past. Moving forward, research on IBA effectiveness needs to adopt a longer timeframe and begin to gauge the degree to which IBAs are able to address long-standing concerns associated with hinterland resource extraction beyond their agreement-specific objectives.

Rhyolitic rocks are volumetrically significant in the eastern part of the Coromandel gold province, yet deposits hosted by rhyolite (Kapowai, Broken Hills, Neavesville, Wharekirauponga and Waihi Beach) are generally low grade and subeconomic, especially compared with andesite-hosted deposits. In contrast, rhyolitic volcanic centres in Nevada host a number of economically significant epithermal gold deposits such as Round Mountain, Sleeper and Bullfrog. The Nevada deposits are associated with 27-20 Ma continental arc volcanics dominated by ignimbrites (eg Round Mountain), or younger 17-9 Ma bimodal rhyolite-basalt volcanism related to extensional basin-and-range tectonics (eg Sleeper). The Round Mountain deposit is localised on a caldera boundary fault and the mineralisation was deposited soon after eruption of the host rhyodacitic ignimbrite. In other Nevada deposits, hydrothermal systems are linked to the closing stages of flow-dome complexes and mineralisation is localised along normal faults associated with extensional basin-and-range tectonism. The style and composition of the mineralisation is similar in both the Coromandel and Nevada deposits and consists of sheeted and stockwork quartz veins, containing electrum as the main ore mineral and only minor sulphides (mainly pyrite) Likewise, the vein minerals were deposited from low salinity hydrothermal fluids in the temperature range of 200-270¦C. Both the Neavesville and Round Mountain deposits are geochemically anomalous in molybdenum. The deep oxidation of the Nevada gold deposits, dry climate and low level of competing land uses combine to make it economic to mine and process very low grade ore (0.2 - 2.0 g/t Au) by heap-leaching with cyanide solutions in most areas of Nevada. Although extensive low grade gold mineralisation is known at deposits such as Wharekirauponga and Neavesville, it is sub-economic because of shallow oxidation and land use conditions that are unfavourable for open pit mining and heap leaching.

"Acid regeneration is a very important process step in each acid leach circuit. It is required to recover dissolved metals and HCl from spent leaching acid. Andritz Metals presents its recently commissioned spray roast pilot plant. The facility is now available for testing and demonstrating acid recovery or metal oxide production which is a requirement in several flow sheets under development for the mining and specialized oxides industries. Results from pilot test campaigns are reported here. We are currently focusing on a nickel ore leaching process, which requires both a feasible iron control and acid regeneration step. In addition, we disclose the results of a magnesium ore and aluminium recycling test campaign conducted in our pilot plant facility.INTRODUCTION Hydrochloric acid regeneration is widely used in the steel industry to regenerate spent pickle liquors into hydrochloric acid at a typical concentration of 18 wt.%. Andritz Metals (formerly known as Ruthner) has built more than 200 acid regeneration plants worldwide (Andritz Metals brochure). As technology leaders Andritz also has vast experience with specialty metal oxide plants, producing metal oxides such as aluminium oxide (Al2O3), magnesium oxide (MgO), nickel oxide (NiO), cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and mixed oxides from metal chloride solutions (Baerhold F., Lebl A., Starcevic J., 2006), (Jedlicka, H., n.d.), (Ruthner M.J., Krischner H., 1973), (Ruthner Ind. Planungs AG, 1967). Hydrochloric acid leach circuits have been developed and proven in the industry for many years. Examples of industrial applications are: synthetic rutile production (TiO2) (Walpole E.A., Winter J.D., 2002), Quebec Iron and Titanium’s UGS process (Patoine M.-C., De Mori A., Borowiec K., Coscia C., 2002), magnesium and potassium production (Priemer H., 1973) and Goro Nickel (Vahed A., Colton D.F., Duterque J.P., Karner W., Baerhold F., 2004), (Taylor A., 2013). One of the critical process steps in developing a hydrometallurgical process is acid regeneration, as it is an economic requirement to recover both the dissolved metals and acid (commonly HCl) from the spent leaching solution."

Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

The public is asking for more aesthetic designs if they can be proven cost-effective at providing an appealing element to new dams. Lake Lenexa was designed and built around the idea of providing for basic dam functions such as flood control, enhanced water quality, recreation but also to provide an inviting community focal point for the residents to visit and enjoy; truly interact with the dam. The architecturally unique dam and ?one of a kind? spillway were designed to symbolize the water cycle as water moves from nature into the urban environment and the back to nature. A pedestrian bridge that spans the spillway offers visitors a good view of cascading pools and a fountain. The original Lake Lenexa dam layout incorporated relatively high, cast-in-place concrete retaining walls to form the spillway structure. The Black & Veatch project team performed a Value Engineering (VE) study to determine cost-effective means for implementing architectural features within the spillway, which resulted in innovative uses of construction materials not typically used in dam and reservoir construction. The VE study concluded that mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls that are normally used for transportation projects would be a cost-effective alternative to the originally planned cast-in-place wall systems for the main spillway and stilling basins. The Black & Veatch study added value by mixing cement-kiln dust (CKD) with on-site clay soils to produce a stabilized material for use under the spillway. The CKD stabilized material properties include low compressibility, high strength and low permeability, which reduced seepage and uplift pressures under the spillway slabs. The cost savings provided by the VE alternatives reduced total costs and enabled architectural elements. The award winning dam design also used drilled caissons, expanded polystyrene (EPS) block forms, customized steel forms and external concrete vibrators to build the pedestrian bridge and upper spillway structures.
