Indium recovery from liquid crystal display (LCD) waste has been the subject of over 50 peer reviewed publications over the last decade; however, the first commercial recycling facilities are just beginning to be built. The low value of indium in the LCD screen material has posed a major challenge to would-be recyclers. Uncommon material combinations and geometries have further challenged development. A review of published literature regarding extraction of indium from LCDs will be presented and themes of advantageous processes will be highlighted. Barriers to rapid expansion of any recycling technology in the form of manufacturin gpractices, environmental regulations, and geographic constraints will be discussed.

The NASA Lewis Research Center, under U.S. Bureau of Mines program direction, performed an assessment of alternative mobile power sources for mining applications. A wide variety of heat engines and energy systems was initially examined to ascertain which could be considered as potential alternatives to presently used power systems. The present mobile power systems are electrical trailing cable, electrical battery, and diesel - with diesel being largely limited in the United States to noncoal mines. Each candidate power source was evaluated in terms, of the following requirements: (1) Ability to achieve the duty cycle (2) Ability to meet Government regulations (MSHA certification) (3) Availability (production readiness) (4) Market availability (5) Packaging capability An initial screening reduced the list of candidates to the following: (1) Diesel (2) Stirling (3) Gas turbine (4) Rankine (steam) (5) Advanced electric (batteries) (6) Mechanical energy storage (flywheel) (7) Use of hydrogen evolved from metal hydrides This list of candidates was divided into two classes of alternative power sources for mining applications - heat engines and energy storage systems. This contract is concerned with the construction of a Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System consisting of one readout unit and several dosimeter units. The Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System was designed and developed by the Bureau of Mines with the purpose of this contract aimed at obtaining additional units for further field testing and evaluation. All construction was in accordance with the Bureau of Mines design and/or Bureau approved drawings produced during the course of this contract. This report contains a summary of the construction efforts, problems encountered, recommendations and all drawings produced under this contract.

Mechanical data from a rockbolt drilling machine, such as torque, thrust, revolution and stroke, are useful for understanding the geological and geomechanical conditions around roadways and hence selecting the optimum bolt type and density. Laboratory experiments showed that the level of torque or thrust reflects differences in rock type, with separation of strata and cracks appearing as a specific pattern. Algorithms of neural networks based on adaptive resonance theory and back-propagation were used to extract the pattern and estimate the location of discontinuities. For field testing in an underground coal mine, a prototype data acquisition system was attached to a portable drilling machine. Several sets of logging data from one locality were combined to construct a two-dimensional model of the strata, from which the slope angles of discontinuity faces could be estimated

A chlorination pilot plant having capacity to produce 5?10 kg/hr of titanium tetrachloride is in operation at the chlorination facility in Mintek. The bubbling fluid bed chlorination plant can be operated in batch and/or continuous process to study the chlorination kinetics of various feedstocks. The chlorination of titaniferrous ores to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was carried out during the commissioning of the pilot plant and also as part of the titanium programme carried out at Mintek. TiCl4 is a basic raw material for producing commercial titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. This paper discusses the challenges faced during the commissioning and operation of the chlorination pilot plant. It also discusses the effect on the auxiliary facilities and instrumentation as a result of the harsh operating conditions of +1000°C and use of corrosive gases like chlorine and titanium tetrachloride. It discusses the effect of physico-chemical properties of the titanium tetrachloride and iron chlorides. The effect on the chlorinator refractory lining due to heating and cooling of the chlorinator is also discussed. Besides the special provisions made during the design of the chlorinator, this paper also discusses the operational experience and possible solutions to be implemented in future. Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. "For the production of partially composed metal matrix composites, namely discontinuous MMCs, using a casting· process, the interpenetrated phase composites with SiC particles were fabricated by pressureless iDfiltration using molten Al-Si alloys. This process is based on a wetting phenomenon, therefore, we discussed the technique based on the reactive wetting. The SiC particles coated by diluted water glass were sintered in a mullite Tammann tube and simultaneously infiltrated with molten Al-Si alloys in air at 1173~1573K. As for the improvement of the wettability between the SiC and the liquid aluminum alloy, Fe3O 4 powder was mixed with the water glass due to the thermit reaction between Fe3O4 and molten aluminum alloy. In some experiments, pure aluminum powder was placed on the sintered SiC to increase the interfacial area and the chemical reaction between the sintered Sic. and the melt. By combining these conditions, we succeeded in the complete infiltration without pressure at 1173K.IntroductionAs is well known, the mechanical properties of metal matrix composites (abbreviated MMCs) are superior than that of ordinary metals. However, their use has not been widely accepted because the production cost is very high due to their poor machinability. Therefore, the production of partially composed, namely discontinuous MMCs, by as the Lanxide process [l,2] has been investigated for many years. The Lanxide process, it takes a long time, sometimes up to 10h, in a nitrogen atmosphere for the infiltration. Therefore, the cost will be higher for common use. On the other hand, a high 'pressure process has been adopted for the production of discontinuous MMCs by the Toyota Motor Corp.[3]."

"The mineral potential of the Nanisivik area was discovered as far back as 1910 when a prospector of the Geological Survey of Canada, on an expedition under Captain J. G.Bernier, recorded a deposit of pyrite with minor sphalerite and galena. An outcrop of the present orebody was discovered by Texas Gulf Company in 1957. Subsequent drilling outlined the orebody consisting of 6,000,000 tonnes of ore containing 13 % Zinc and 1.5 % Lead. The orebody appears to have been formed by the filling of a limestone cavern with sulphides. The sulphide minerals consist of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. The limestone bedrock is mostly dolomite with some calcite and magnesite. A cutoff grade of about 6% Zinc has been calculated.In 1972 Mineral Resources International Limited took an option on the property. Upon completion of the feasibility study by Watts, Griffiths and McOuat, the then new independent project management group of Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. were engaged to develop the project through the financing, construction and operating phases. Strathcona Mineral Services still manage the project from their head office in Toronto and through the Mine Manager and Department Superintendents at the Mine site. The interest for the project is presently split five ways: Mineral Resources International Ltd. 53.5 %, Government of Canada 18 %, Metallgesellschaft A.G. of Germany 11.25 %, Billiton B. V. of Holland 11.25 % and Texas Gulf Co. 6 %."

Line electrical resistivity method using physically infinite distance between current line electrodes is proposed to determine the location of mine workings. In this method at least three line electrodes are used. One of the current electrodes is used as a sinkhole electrode while the other two are used for different activiations of line electrodes when the survey area is between one of the line electrodes and outside the other one. The resistivity profiles perpendicular to the current line electrodes for different activation of electrodes is plotted versus the distance of the midpoint of the measuring potential electrodes. The anomaly due to presence of any locally lateral resistivity variation (e.g. mining cavity) will represent itself as peak or trough depending on resistivity contrast between the source of the anomaly and surrounding medium. Physical simulation of the proposed model was conducted by using a tank model in the laboratory. The results of experiments appear to be consistent with the theoretical model. Experiments for different depths and different spacial locations of the simulated cavities appeared to be successful for locating the depth and size of the cavity.

"Breakwater Tunisia S.A.’s Bougrine mine is located in a semi-arid region of Tunisia characterized with Triassic salt domes. Due to extensive agricultural land-use in the mine area, a zero-discharge tailings facility design and high water recycling rates to the concentrator were chosen to minimize the environmental impact to the surrounding area. The process water supply has an accumulation of naturally occurring salts due to high evaporation rates and the need to recycle 70% of the process water. The elevated salt content of the process water had an adverse effect on the efficiency of the flotation reagents, which led to the production of lower quality zinc concentrate.The impact of the water salinity on the zinc concentrate quality was documented by extensive laboratory testing. A feasibility study was prepared and a decision was made to install a reverse osmosis plant for desalination of the process water. A plant was constructed during 2000 which currently supplies up to 85 m3/hr of de-mineralized water, equal to approximately 45% of the total process water requirement. The salinity of the process water decreased from about ten to twelve grams per litre before installation to less than three grams per litre. Together with minor modifications to the concentrator circuit, Breakwater Tunisia has increased the zinc concentrate grade from 50% zinc to 55% zinc without compromising the zinc recovery rate of approximately 84%.This paper discusses the successful installation of a reverse osmosis desalination plant that allowed Breakwater Tunisia to improve the grade of the Bougrine mine zinc concentrate and thus increase the net smelter return.INTRODUCTIONBreakwater Resources Ltd., through a wholly owned subsidiary, Breakwater Tunisia S.A., acquired the Bougrine underground mine and related assets in September 1997. During the winter of 1997/1998, the company rehabilitated the mining equipment, modified the concentrator circuit, developed a new mine ventilation system and prepared a new mining production program. The mine was reopened on May 2, 1998 and was in commercial production as of June 1, 1998."

The anomaly ratio is obtained by dividing the analyzed value of an element by the anomaly threshold value of the element. The sum of anomaly ratios for all anomalous elements in a sample may be compared with similar sums for other samples, so that the samples having the greatest anomaly-ratio totals can be recognized easily. In partial or full-suites-of-ore-elements the use of anomaly ratios is more meaningful than analyzed values because the ratios quickly indicate anomalous elements and call attention to samples and localities that should be investigated.

The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been-published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment. Report of Investigations 3309, Permissible Electrically Operated Air Compressors, which contains similar information, was issued in August 1936, and a Report of Investigations 3326, Permissible Electrically Operated Room Hoists, was issued in January 1937. Thus, the present paper is the third to give detailed information concerning permissible machines of types not included in bulletins, and covers all the rock-dust distributors approved prior to October 1, 1936.

Economic Importance of Gasification of Fuel and Brief Outline of Development of Underground Gasification of Coal in the U.S.S.R. The underground gasification of fuel offers a number of economic and social advantages, principally the following: 1. Full automation of labor-consuming coal-mining processes, which resist complex mechanization and automation, particularly shaft mining. 2. Elimination of hard, dangerous, and often unhealthful mining work. 3. Creation of hygienic conditions for personnel employed in gas production, as well as for those in boiler rooms using the gas. 4. Possibility of automation of complex production processes of thermal-electric powerplants using underground gas with economic installations for steam production. 5. Economic operation of thermal-electric powerplants constructed in the areas of underground-gas production. 6. Release of railroads from the burden of transporting fuel. 7. Extension of the power base of some areas in need of fuel and of the economy as a whole due to use of fuel deposits not amenable to normal mining practices. 8. Reduction of capital investments per unit of energy produced in the form of fuel. 9. Substantial increase in general labor productivity. 10. Possibility of substantial reduction in the cost of fuel produced and of electric power produced from underground gas.

Recently, a new hybrid geopolymer/biopolymer (GP/BP) cementitious material was developed for improving the performance of pumpable roof supports in underground mines. This study demonstrates the application of the hybrid GP/BP cementitious material and validates its effectiveness in full-scale. In this regard, eight (8) full-size (0.61 m diameter and 1.52 m height) cribs were produced in collaboration with Minova International Ltd and tested at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) Laboratory. These full-size cribs were produced with different material configurations to evaluate the effect of water to solid (W/S) ratio, Portland cement (PC) content, and BP dosage. The results demonstrated and validated the effectiveness of the hybrid GP/BP cementitious material in increasing the peak and residual bearing capacities of pumpable cribs and eliminating the issue of deterioration when exposed to air compared with the conventional Portland cement/fly ash (PC/FA) cementitious material currently used in practice. On average, the peak uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the highest residual UCS after peak of the full-size cribs produced from the hybrid GP/BP cementitious material are 1.90 and 1.33 times of those of the PC/FA-based full-size cribs by one company and 2.32 and 1.66 times of those of the PC/FA based full-size cribs by the other company, respectively.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. 80122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available. Personnel involved in the investigation include J.R. Wait (Principal Investigator), D.A. Hill (Co-Principal Investigator), K.P. Spies, A.Q. Howard, and Lana Slusher (Administrative Assistant).

To aid industry and Government in planning water developments the Bureau of Mines in 1963 canvassed mineral producers to determine water use in 1962. Water use by the mineral industry comprises only 2 percent of the water withdrawn by industry as a whole. The major water-using mineral industries are natural gas processing, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore. Analysis indicated the following conclusions: 1. Total water use and new water intake is dependent on the quantity of material processed and the process water requirements of the particular industry or commodity. 2. Recirculation is dependent on the processing requirements of a particular commodity, the manner in which the water is used, cooling and condensing requirements in certain large industries, the quality of new water intake, and the need to treat new and discharged water. 3. Consumed water is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, the temperature and humidity in the area, and the proportion of water used for cooling and condensing. 4. A threefold increase in water use by the mineral industry by 1985 is forecast
