ABSTRACTRock stresses can be modified by physicochemical processes.If rock pores allow the ingress of water and oxygen, but are not large enough to permit the exit of larger molecules of weathering products, anomalous rock pressures develop. Rock masses may also be subjected to osmotic pressures developed as water diffuses into pores and joints filled with saline water. Anomalous rock pressures may also develop as gels filling pores undergo syneresis and as salts crystallize from pore solutions.

Essa contribuição técnica mostra a evolução do processo da Linha de Recozimento Contínuo de Chapas (LRCC#1) da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), na produção de laminados a frio sem revestimento para o segmento de mercado de tambores. A CSN vinha ao longo do tempo perdendo esse mercado devido principalmente a problemas de qualidade, como oxidação quando realizava a laminação de encruamento seca e, por outro lado quando processava o material com laminação de encruamento com óleo protetivo, ocorria no processo do cliente de cura a incompatibilidade com a tinta e vernizes nas aplicações mais críticas como acondicionamento alimentício, farmacêuticos e outros, cujos requisitos de qualidade rigorosos são exigidos contra qualquer tipo de contaminação. Desenvolveu-se um produto que associado ao controle de sua quantidade e a microgeometria da superfície da tira, resultou na lubricidade necessária para a continuidade operacional e atendeu aos requisitos de qualidade desejados.

Após estudo realizado, verificou-se que a CSP - Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém, possuía alta vulnerabilidade às oscilações de frequência, sejam elas oriundas de falhas nas unidades geradoras ou problemas nas linhas de transmissão que compõem o SIN (Sistema Interligado Nacional), onde tais perturbações poderiam provocar desde a parada total da planta a danos irreversíveis em equipamentos como motores síncronos. Com base nesse estudo, foi implantado um sistema automatizado e de rápida resposta capaz de diminuir ou eliminar todos os efeitos provocados por tais distúrbios, atuando de forma dinâmica e coordenada com o cenário energético ao qual a planta siderúrgica encontra-se no momento do evento. Dentre os ganhos apontados em estudo, destaca-se a confiabilidade de se ter um sistema de distribuição de energia em uma usina siderúrgica capaz de assegurar a continuidade do processo ou em piores casos proporcionar uma parada emergencial com total segurança.

Engineers and researchers need to estimate the mechanical properties of rocks from P-wave velocity. In previous studies, the researchers have investigated either the limited values or all the data belonging to sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks together in the same statistical analysis. In this study, the raw data pertaining to only sedimentary rocks was taken from previous studies and evaluated. For this purpose, a total of 97 samples of sedimentary rock types were subjected to statistical analysis. First, the relationships between P-wave velocity and physical-mechanical properties were investigated by simple regression analysis. All the data were then subjected to multi-regression analysis. Some empirical equations with high correlation coefficients were derived for rock engineers. The equations obtained from the analyses are compared with previous equations found in literature.

Diante disso, nos últimos 2 anos, o segmento de Aços Planos da ArcelorMittal Brasil vem passando por um processo de transformação, revisitando e reestruturando seus processos internos. Na área de planejamento um dos itens avaliados foi o processo de Planejamento de Vendas e Operações – Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP). O objetivo desse trabalho é a apresentação do novo modelo de S&OP da ArcelorMittal Brasil – Aços Planos, seus benefícios, e ferramentas utilizadas para suportar essa evolução: o SAP Integrated Business Planning for S&OP e a plataforma de colaboração SAP Jam, responsável por orquestrar todo fluxo de S&OP e as interações entre as diversas áreas envolvidas. O novo processo foi baseado nos conceitos existentes na literatura e também é objeto desse artigo. Além disso, no projeto de implementação do SAP IBP e SAP Jam foram utilizadas a Metodologia de Gerenciamento de Projetos baseada nas melhores práticas descritas pelo PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) do PMI (Project Management Institute) e a Metodologia SAP Activate para a implementação dos produtos. Como resultado da implantação desse projeto, foram obtidos vários benefícios, sendo alguns deles já atingidos e outros a serem capturados após o período de adaptação e estabilização dos processos e ferramentas.

The field tests involved ten coal mines in which transients were initiated on the dc system from which the parameters of the dc mine electrical power system could be determined. The data processing involved the use of a Fourier Analyzer to filter noise and fit an exponential curve to the field waveforms. From this data analysis it was possible to find the dc system resistance, inductance and time constant. The survey of nationally recognized laboratories was conducted to establish that the recommended test criteria were practical. The development of test criteria for dc fuses used in mines was based on the measurement of parameters in the field, the survey of testing laboratories, literature searches, laboratory test, etc. A computer program was written to analytically predict the parameters measured in the field. This approach has limitations but reasonable agreement with field results was obtained. A brief laboratory testing program was carried out to verify the practicality of the recommended criteria and establish the accuracy of the conclusions concerning dc fuse performance.

Concentrated hydrogen peroxide (H202) is a highly reactive oxidizing agent that liberates heat when it decomposes. The heat liberated may be sufficient to ignite combustibles with which the peroxide comes in contact. For this reason, concentrated hydrogen peroxide should be handled only by personnel familiar with its many unique properties.6 Hydrogen peroxide is used as a bleaching agent in the manufacture of textiles; this is its major single use in the United States. It is also employed as a reagent in chemical synthesis, as a source of free radicals to start polymerization, as a foaming agent in the manufacture of porous substances, and for its effect on biological processes. Moreover, highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide is a compact source of energy that can be utilized both as a monopropellant and as the oxidizer in a bipropellant system, During World War II, large quantities of highly concentrated hydro- gen peroxide were used as propellants, particularly in Germany. Since then, production of the peroxide has increased rapidly; in the United States alone it has more than doubled since 1950.7 Because of its widespread use, increasing interest has been shown in the hazards of handling the high- strength peroxide.

A pesquisa foi realizada com o intuito de produzir nanocompósitos baseados em uma matriz polimérica de poli (metacrilato de metila) (PMMA) com nanocargas de carbeto de silício (SiC) dispersas na matriz orgânica. Os nanocompósitos foram produzidos através da polimerização em massa, a qual o peróxido de benzoíla foi utilizado como o iniciador. Os novos materiais foram produzidos sob a forma de filmes e consequentemente eles foram submetidos e caracterizados pelas análises de termogravimetria (TGA), espectroscopia de infravermelho por transformada Fourier (FTIR), fluorescência de raio-x (XRF), espectroscopia por energia dispersiva de raio-x (EDS) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (FEGSEM). Os resultados obtidos durante a caracterização dos filmes dos nanocompósitos demonstraram a boa eficiência dos processos de sínteses e misturas das cargas de SiC na matriz orgânica.

Currently in open pit mining in Peru with double bench, it is a challenge to optimize fragmentation in the drill rows near to the slopes to ensure the performance in the loading and haulage operation along with the process in the plant. That is why the present paper addresses a previously unanalyzed variable on the effect of the discontinuity plane on the fragmentation results. From the numerical mathematical models applied through algorithms in advanced computational tools such as Elfen, it was quantified the improvement in fragmentation results as P80 through a correct pre-split plane both in its extension as well as in its width. The first results show an improvement of 30% in the P80 and ensuring the quality of the walls without damage to the matrix of the final wall. The basis developed in this paper is based on the concept of wave reflection in the free face zones where greater efforts are presented for fragmentation, a similar theory is presented in the variation of initiation sequences that seek a greater area of reflective planes in the form of "V". Cases were evaluated with a percentage of compliance of the pre-split planes from 0 to 100% evaluating the impact on the results and correlated with field information explaining the behavior and validating the benefit. From the quantification of the benefits, this work opens the possibility of focusing resources on optimizing the pre-split process to achieve an improvement in the fragmentation results, giving a greater tool in the decision to optimize the blasting process.

To determine the retorting characteristics of a column of mine-run, ungraded oil shale ranging in size from fines to 5-ton pieces, a 150-ton batch-type retort was designed and constructed at the Bureau of Mines Laramie Energy Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The retort vessel is 45 feet high by 11 ½ feet inside diameter, and is supported in a 95-foot-high steel superstructure. Mine-run shale from the Bureau of Mines facility near Rifle, Colo., assaying about 25 gallons of oil per ton, was used as the test shale. To date, 11 runs have been completed, and the results of the last 10 of these are reported. The effects of oxygen content of the retorting gas and the superficial gas velocity of the retorting gas on oil recovery from a column of mine-run oil shale were studied. In one run, the average particle size of the shale was substantially increased to determine its effect on oil yield. Oil recoveries ranged from a low of 39.3 to a high of 65.8 volume-percent of Fischer assay.

Complying with respirable dust standards is presently a critical problem for many longwall faces equipped with double drum shearers. Results are presented of research performed to increase the quantity and optimize the distribution of the water supplied to the shearer drums to control the shearer operator dust exposure. The effect on the total respirable dust produced by the shearer was also examined. During the research effort, a simple and inexpensive manually controlled valve system was designed and implemented on a shearer to distribute the water supplied to the shearer drums. Research showed that increases in water quantities are beneficial but associated pressure increases may induce respirable dust boilover negating potential advantages. Other essential parameters such as location of shearer operator, outside spray orientation and air quantity were considered in the evaluation.

The number of Native Americans presently working as mining engineers is extremely low-perhaps three in the entire US. At the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, it was felt that introducing high ability students to mining engineering at the high school level would encourage more to consider mining engineering as a career. New Mexico Tech, in Socorro, NM, has initiated a continuing summer college program for Native American high school students. The program, which began in the summer of 1980, is designed to introduce participants to college life, enrich their high school curricula, and expose them to the problems and challenges of a career in mining and related engineering fields. Students From reservations throughout New Mexico with a demonstrated aptitude for science and mathematics were encouraged to apply for admission. Preference was given to high school sophomores and juniors since it is hoped that students will want to return for a second year before graduating from high school and beginning university studies. The program seeks to impress upon the students the need fir Native Americans in the fields of seience and mineral engineering.

Treatments with high concentration solution of inorganic acid at temperatures under boiling point are a usual method for clay minerals structure modification. For many industrial uses bentonites must be cleared of impurities. In the present paper, a sample of Brazilian bentonite from Vitoria da Conquista, Bahia was modified by mild acid attack using hydrochloric acid under moderate conditions (90 °C, reaction times of 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 h in close reactor, concentration of the aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid 1.5 M, acid solution/clay ratio of 1 g/10 mL). The attacked samples were characterized by CEC, XRF, SEM, EDS and Stereomicroscopy. The purpose of these attacks is to reduce the concentration of impurities with minimal damage in clay minerals structure. The modified bentonite presented good results and tends to be a good economic and environmental alternative to manufacturing products with high added value such as polymer/clay nanocomposites, cosmetics and medicines.

The specific objective of this investigation was to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at -10° and -20° C and pressures to 1,000 psia. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the experiments were treated by the method of Barieau and Dalton. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for 10 binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results follow the same trend as data previously reported.

Mechanical models are established in accordance with the degree of mining on both sides of the coal pillar, and formulae were derived which calculated the superposition stress distribution and the width of the plastic region. The stability of the coal pillar was analysed and a reasonable size of coal pillar determined, in accordance with the elastic region rate. Further practical examples for the stability of the coal pillar are calculated and simulated.

Belle Fourche Shale was processed and characterized for use as a clay-based ceramic. The shale was wet sieved to produce particles that were ± 150 μm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the -150 μm material was enriched in clay content compared to the unprocessed materials, whereas the oversize material was enriched in quartz compared to the undersize sample. Particle size analysis was performed on the—150 μm sample, which showed that the median particle size was around 10 μm. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis further confirmed the small plate size, which appeared to be primarily layered clay particles. Next, the -150 μm particles were rolled into a green body, dried at room temperature, and fired at 998°C. The fired piece was analyzed by XRD and contained 6 wt% hematite, 55% quartz, 19% microcline, and various other minor amounts of minerals. When fired at 1152 ℃, mullite was found with increasing hematite compared to the 998 ℃ firing. A multi-spectral analyzer was used to quantify the color change of the 998 ℃ fired (orange) to the 1152 ℃ fired (red) samples. Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) of the unfired body exhibited very few large pores, while the piece fired at 998°C also exhibited few and small pores, the overall porosity of the fired body increased. Microhardness data, obtained from the aforementioned samples, resulted in Vickers Hardness (HV1.0) values of 70.8 HV1.0 (998 ℃) and 485.7 HV1.0 (1152 ℃). Three-point bend testing was performed, giving an average strength of 23 MPa on pieces fired at 998 ℃. The average bending strength of the samples fired at 1152 ℃, was 55 MPa.

Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or off-the-shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shovel-truck system. The modified Machine Repair Model is first applied to a virtual open pit mine case study. The results compare favourably to output from other estimation models using the same input parameters for the virtual mine. The modified Machine Repair Model is further applied to an existing open pit coal operation, the Kwagga Section of Optimum Colliery as a case study. Again the results confirm those obtained from the virtual mine case study. It is concluded that the Machine Repair Model can be an affordable model compared to off-the-shelf generic software because it is easily modelled in Microsoft Excel, a software platform that most mines already use. The Ising model for the internal energy of a binary alloy has been used to obtain a general equation for the critical resolved shear stress of partially ordered crystals. The equation expresses the stress in terms of the Warren "alphas " and can be used to estimate the variation in strength with order without the assumption, present in the original formulation of this problem in terms of domain size, that order is complete within each domain and that the domains are of ungorm size and shape. In addition, it is the general equation, according to the Ising model, for strengthening by short-range order. Two applications of the equation are considered: One is an estimate of the variation in strength of CkAu with long-range order. The other is an estimate of the variation in strength of FeCo with quench temperature. Reasonable agreement is found with the variations reported in the literature. When the internal energy of an alloy crystal depends upon the distribution of solute, the strength of the crystal will also depend upon it because a portion of the applied stress for plastic deformation will be: where V is the volume of the crystal and E(E) is the energy change associated with the solute redistribution caused by the plastic strain, E. We expect T to equal zero for a crystal having a random arrangement of solute because the arrangement would remain random after plastic deformation. Likewise, we expect it to equal zero when the crystal is perfectly ordered because the motion of paired dislocations found in such crystals does not disrupt order. However, when short-range order exists or when long-range order is incomplete, plastic deformation will decrease the amount of order and additional work, proportional to the ordering energy, will be expended. Fisher' estimated T for crystals having short-range order by assuming an interaction energy between neighboring atoms and estimating the change in the number of unlike neighbors as a dislocation moved through the crystal. (His analysis was limited and several workers2"6 have since given more complete ones.) Fisher minimized the importance of a strengthening mechanism of this type for paired dislocations in a structure having long-range order. ~ottrell,' however, pointed out that T could be appreciable for ordered crystals having antiphase domains. He attributed the strengthening to the increase in surface energy of the domains as they were cut by paired dislocations. Ardley,' in his test of Cottrell's theory, found that r for Cu3Au crystals obeyed the equation: for 1 > t where 1 is the domain size, t is the domain wall thickness, and y is the surface energy of an antiphase boundary. His experiments represent the classic confirmation of the strengthening mechanism proposed by Cottrell. However, the assumptions involved in using Cottrell's theory are valid only for large domain size in CU~AU,~"~ i.e., when Eq. [2] reduces to: For small domains, ~linn~ has questioned Ardley's assumption that order was complete, and, indeed, Stoloff and ~avies" fpnd it incomplete until a size of approximately lOOA was reached. Even when the order within a domain is complete, it is not obvious how one determines the appropriate value for I in a structure where domains vary in size and are irregularly shaped. The purpose of this paper is to estimate T without restrictions upon the degree of order and domain shape. Our major assumption will be the use of a generalization of the model proposed by Bethe" (the Ising model) for the internal energy. This will in fact allow us to combine the theories for strengthening by short-range order and by antiphase domains into a single, general formalism. We will use the results to estimate the variation in strength of Cu3Au crystals with long-range order8 and the variation in flow stress of FeCo crystals with quench temperature.12'13 INTERNAL ENERGY For simplicity, we restrict our considerations to those binary solid solutions which can be described as an arrangement of atoms on a Bravais lattice. An atom site will be indexed by three numbers (PI, pz, p3) determined by the vector: from the origin fixed at atom (0, 0, 0) to the atom site where a', an, and a, are the lattice translation vectors. We write: For the energy of the crystal where pi(p) is the probability (either zero or one) of finding an atom of type i (i = 1, 2) at site (p), which is shorthand for (pl, pz, p3) and pj(p + r) is that for an atom of type j (j = 1, 2) at the site (p + r), which is shorthand for (pl + rl, The coupling parameter, resents the energy associated with the pair Pi(p), Pj(p + r). The oxidation of Cu2S in oxygen and the sulfating of Cu2O in oxygen-sulfur dioxide atmospheres was carried out under a variety of conditions. The oxidation of Cu2S was found to be retarded by entrapment of SO, and O2, which stabilized internal sulfates for long periods of time. The course of the reaction was followed by measuring weight changes and also by SO, evolution. Sulfating of Cu2O was a maximum at ratios of SO, to O2 approximating maximum SO, production. At elevated temperatures SO, was found to increase the rate of oxidation of Cu2 O to CuO even though sulfates did not form. All sulfating reactions followed the parabolic rate law indicating diffusion. MANY studies of the roasting of copper sulfides have been reported in recent years. Diev et al.1 investigated the roasting of chalcocite (Cu2S) in air, and oxygen enriched air. Lewis et al.2 also studied the oxidation of natural and synthetic chalcocite in air and oxygen atmospheres and their studies indicated that the maximum formation of water soluble sulfates occurred at approximately 450oC. Ashcroft3 reported that oxide production during the roasting of chalcocite resulted only from secondary decomposition of sulfates which were formed as primary products. peretti4 refuted this claim by showing that a layer of Cu2O appeared directly adjacent to the Cu2S during roasting of cylindrical briquettes of cupric sulfide, CuS. The linear advance of the Cu2S-Cu2O interface was used as a measure of the kinetics of the roasting reaction. The reactions proposed were: 2 CuS—Cu2S + 1/2 S2 [4-1] 1/2 S2 + O24 SO2 [4-2] cuzs +3/2 O2 4 Cu2O + SO2 [4-3] cu2o + 1/2 O2—2 cuo [4-4] At temperatures above 663oC, CuO was the only final solid phase reported. Below 663" C increasing amounts of sulfate were found mixed with the CuO. McCabe and Morgan5 investigated the roasting of discs of synthetic chalcocite and reported the following sequence of products beginning at the sulfide surface: Cu2O, a mixture of Cu2O and CuSO4, Cum,, CuO . CuSO4, and CuO. The principal reactions were reported to be: Cu2S + 3/2 O2-Cu2O + SO2 [5-1] CU2O + 2 SO2 + 3/2 O2—2 CUSO4 [5-21 2 CUSO4— CUO . cum, + SO3 [ 5-31 cuo . cuso4—-2 cuo + SO, [ 5-41 Eq.15-11 supports the claim of Peretti, Eq. [4-31, that CuzO is formed directly from Cu2S rather than as a secondary product from a sulfate as suggested by Ashcroft. On the other hand CuO was found to form as a secondary product from the decomposition of copper sulfate and basic copper sulfate, Eqs. [5-31 and [5-41. The formation of sulfates was explained by McCabe and morgan5 to be a direct reaction of Cu2O with 0, and SO, or SO, at distinct regions in which the partial pressures of each were such as to form the sulfate. Thornhill and pidgeon6 roasted both natural and synthetic chalcocite grains in air at temperatures between 420" and 550° C. They found a dense primary oxidation layer in contact with the sulfide. A secondary layer of porous oxidation products was found to expand with roasting time. The oxide products were leached away and the remaining core was studied by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray patterns showed an increased conversion of chalcocite to digenite with time. Digenite,7 a defect structure of cuprous sulfide, occurs naturally as Cu,-,S where x = 0.12 to 0.45, with an average analysis of Cu, ,S. The mechanism of digenite formation was proposed as: Cu2S + oxygen—Cu1-8S + 0.1 Cu2O [6-1] Cuj.eS + oxygen—0.9 Cu2S + SO2 [6-2] It is apparent from the above studies that the oxidation of Cu2S, ultimately ending in CuO, may be divided into ihree general stages (all of which may occur simultaneously): 1) primary oxidation to Cu2O; 2) secondary sulfate formation; and 3) sulfate decomposition. Consequently reactions of O2 and SO, with Cu20 constitute important aspects of the roasting of chalcocite. Virtually no studies have been made regarding sulfating reactions involving Cu,O. Mills and Evans8 noted the effect of sulfur dioxide on the oxidation of copper at low temperatures and low SO, partial pressures. They reported a measurable increase in the oxidation rate of copper when SO2, was present.
