Attempts to locate domestic supplies of sillimanite have been un- successful until recently. This paper describes recent discoveries of sillimanite-bearing schists in the Southeastern States, with emphasis on geology of the deposits, mineral composition, origin, and reserves. Statements concerning possible methods of mining, milling, and utilization of sillimanite are given. Results from refractory tests on a laboratory scale are summarized.

The proration of oil produced in the field frequently is based partially or entirely upon the gas-oil ratio of wells. The measurement of the gas-oil ratio is one of the more important field tests in regulatory and pro-ration work, and the test always should be conducted according to standardized methods and procedure. Obviously, the gas-oil ratio and the volume of gas produced by a well depend upon many factors but should be independent of the method of measurement and of the devices used to measure gas and oil. Consequently, the volume of gas accompanying a barrel of oil produced by a well may be measured by any reliable and accurate device or instrument. Frequently either a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is used for this purpose, and for a particular well the same rate of flow of gas should be obtained regardless of whether a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is employed in the test. In Texas, when using either instrument, either Capacity Table 1 or 5' is employed in making the necessary computations. If the tables are used, a discrepancy always is found whenever the two instruments are compared by extrapolation to the same conditions of flow. Clearly, Tables 1 and 5 must be at fault in some respects. The orifice well tester and the Bureau of Mines type of critical flow prover are essentially the same instrument; both devices utilize a square-edged orifice 1/8 in. in di-ameter as the primary element, and both freely discharge gas to the atmosphere. Tables for the orifice well tester' have been published in the ranges of 0 to 15 in, of water and 0 to 40 in. of mercury (Hg) differential in pressure. Coefficients for the critical flow prover have been published for differentials in pressure greater than 75 psia. An extrapolation of either differs from the other set of data as much as 18 per cent at some points. No immediately obvious reasons for the discrepancy was found, and data available from the literature were insufficient to effect reconciliation. Consequently, a series of experiments was performed to check the available data and to determine discharge coefficients for the two devices in an overlapping range of differential pressure. The correlating equation used in preparation of tables such as Tables 1 and 5' is the so-called hydraulic equation, Q = C1 vh .....(1) The tables cover orifice sizes from 1/8 through 1 1/4 in. A second set of tables, for use with greater differentials in pressure, apply only to the 3/4, 1, and 1 1/4-in. orifice plates over a pressure range of 0 to 40 in. of Hg. The correlating equation used in preparation of the tables is Q = C2 vH(29.32 + 0.3H)/G . (2) Each of these equations is valid only for the range to which it has been applied, and neither equation is valid for extrapolation. Theoretical equations for flow through an orifice are based upon assumptions of fractionless flow and an emergent jet the size of the orifice. A multiplier, C,, called the discharge coefficient, is inserted into the theoretical expression to compensate for both frictional losses and the contraction of the jet experienced in the plane of the orifice. Buckingham3 shows that C, should vary with the ratio of upstream to downstream pressure for flow of a compressible fluid at any average linear velocity through the orifice less than the velocity of sound. Work published by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics4 indicates that the variation continues into the so-called critical flow region until the vena contracta coincides with the plane of the orifice. The NACA work, however, does not indicate a leveling off of the coefficient. The work of the Bureau of Mines5 for the critical flow prover was based on differential pressures greater than 75 psi and indicates that the discharge coefficient, Cd, is constant in this region at a value of about 0.86.

THIS discussion relates to the distribution of coal under the direction of the U. S. Fuel Administration beginning Apr. 1, 1918. At that time a definite method of ' controlling and directing distribution was put into effect. Prior thereto, although some of the machinery utilized was in operation, especially in the few weeks immediately preceding Apr. 1, distribution had not been effectively and comprehensively organized. The writer was called to the Fuel. Administration by Dr. Garfield about the. first of February, 1918, to assume general direction of the distribution of coal for the Fuel Administration, to develop the general plans, and to obtain practical men to assist in this work and in carrying through the program finally devised. A study of the situation and conferences with the Fuel Administrator and leading men in the business made it plain that it would- he necessary to begin at the bottom, measure the undertaking, develop plans to meet the need thus shown, and build an organization to effect the distribution required. This work had to be done under war pressure in the midst of a bad coal shortage. The successful performance of such a task is always primarily a matter of putting competent men in the right places and giving, them the power and opportunity to function properly together. Geographical Distribution 'he most important known deposits in Australia of what are commonly referred to as the beach-sand minerals are along the most easterly part of the Australian coast, between Southport, 17 miles north of the Queensland-New South Wales border, and Ballina, 50 miles south of the border, and most of the production has come from this area (Fig I). Smaller deposits are known to occur farther to the south at intervals for several hundred miles, and beaches have been worked at Yamba, 96 miles south and Woolgoolga, 150 miles south of the border and at Swansea, 60 miles north of Sydney. Important deposits have been shown to exist on north Stradbroke Island and others have been located farther to the north, as far as Tin Can Bay at the south end of Frazer Island. (Fig 2). Table I gives the list of operators with the location of their deposits and workings, their approximate maximum monthly capacity expressed in tons of heavy mineral produced by their concentrating plants before separation into individual mineral concentrates, their methods of mining and concentrating the minerals, and the products obtained. This table applies as of June 1948, but all the operators are remodeling or improving their plants and plant practices will be modified accordingly. In addition, active boring campaigns have been carried out by Alluvial Gold, Ltd., of Sydney, in the Cudgen-Cudgera area, and by Zinc Corporation Ltd., of Melbourne, on Stradbroke Island, and in other places. Physiography Submergence of the order of 100 to 200 ft at the close of the Pleistocene period left the pre-existing hills as promontories and the valleys as deep inlets. Wave action has built bay-bars and sandspits in a northerly direction from the headlands, and lakes and marshes have formed between these bars and the initial post-submergence coast line. These lakes and swamps have been or are being filled in by river-borne sediments or wind-blown sand. Beasley1 has presented evidence that suggests a recent emergence of the coast line of about 10 ft. The evidence for this belief is the presence of a black sand seam 1/3 mile inland and 17 ft above sea level (Fig 3), and although it is not entirely certain that this seam is of beach formation and owes nothing to windblown concentration, other evidence supports the suggestion of recent emergence. Such emergence would undoubtedly aid the formation of bars and sandspits and the easterly progress of the beach front, leaving a series of parallel dunes (Fig 4). This belt of north-south coastal dunes ranges up to 56 mile in width and as many as 15 lines of dune have been counted (Fig 3). The foredune is generally the highest, upto 25 ft high, and there is in many places a flat platform in front of the dune known as the berm. The dunes behind the foredune are lower and less well defined

A TOTAL eclipse of the sun is a brief, exciting spectacle witnessed by most men but once or twice during a lifetime. But to an astronomer an eclipse of the sun is an event of utmost scientific importance. For then, certain phenomena of the sun normally obscured by the brilliant glare of sunlight become spectacularly visible. For over seventy years prior to 1930 astronomers vainly attempted to discover a means of observing all of these eclipse features of the sun without a natural eclipse. But in 1930, through the genius of the French scientist, Bernard Lyot, astronomers met final success. Dr. Lyot invented a new kind of telescope known as a coronagraph, which made possible photography of all of the eclipse features of the sun. In 1940 Harvard University completed final testing of its Lyot-type coronagraph. the only one in the Western Hemisphere, and shipped it to Climax, where Donald H. Menzel, of Harvard College Observatory, supervised its establishment on the southeastern edge of the mining community of the Climax Molybdenum Co., with whose help and advice the modern residence and telescope dome of the observatory were constructed. Ever since that summer the station has been operated by me, first as a graduate student, and now as a staff member of Harvard College Observatory.

The important factors in any study of the screening of sand with a gravel envelope, as applied to use in oil wells, are: (I) sand size and shape, (z) gravel size and shape, (3) ratio of gravel size to sand size, (4) flow velocity, (5) viscosity of the fluid. Perhaps the first extensive investigation of the function of gravel in screening sand was performed by Coberly and Wagner,' from which the following conclusion was drawn: "The diameter of the largest grains in a single classified sand suitable for gravel packing is approximately 13 times the grain size at the ten-percentile analysis of the formation sample." ?;his applies to sands classified by Tyler screens and is for gravel grains of the maximum size that could be used to form a stable bridge. Field practice has shown that the screening effect of a given gravel for a given sand apparently varies with the flow velocity." Also, it has been assumed by some operators that the thickness of the walls of the gravel envelope surrounding the well has little effect upon the screening process. It is thought by others that a narrow envelope of gravel might form an ineffective screen. Thus the purposes of this work are: 1. To investigate the effect of gravel-sand size ratio upon screening action under the condition of varying flow velocities. 2. To investigate the effect upon screening action of varying the thickness of the gravel screen. 3. To investigate sand migration in the gravel screen and the effect of flow velocity and gravel size upon sand migration. Description of Apparatus In an attempt to reproduce field conditions for the purposes of this investigation, a flow tube was constructed, according to the manner of Urenj3 to represent a radial drainage segment of an oil sand. To arrive at the dimensions of the flow tube, a radial drainage segment of rectangular cross section was assumed to define an area of z sq. in. on the face of a well 6 in. in diameter. From this the dimensions of the segment were calculated out to a distance of 5 ft. from the face of the well. By computing cross-sectional areas at a number of sections along the rectangular segment and transforming these areas into the circular form, a drainage cone was obtained having everywhere the same cross-sectional area as the drainage element of rectangular cross section. To construct the apparatus, two sections of pipe of 7%-in. inside diameter, one 13 in. and the other 4 ft. long, were joined by a bolted flange. A mandrel having the dimensions of the drainage cone was centered in the pipe and a neat cement mixture was cast around it. A protective gasket was placed between the two sections of pipe so that the cement body could be separated at that point. When the mandrel was withdrawn a drainage cone was obtained (Fig. I).

The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. The Chelan nickel deposit was discovered about 1900, on a sage-brush-covered hillside with a southerly slope, adjacent to Winesap Canyon; the paved highway now extending from Wenatchee northward, up the Columbia River and into Okanogan Valley, is only a mile away. After the deposit was found, three short prospect tunnels were driven into it, and the prospect then remained dormant for 40 years. No. x tunnel was 80 ft. long, running north into the hillside. For the first 35 ft. this adit exposed a typical, iron-stained gossan with streaks and stains of malachite, and small seams of water-soluble nickel sulphate. Beyond this, it encountered a relatively fresh peridotite, well mineralized with blebs of pentlandite. Systematic sampling yielded an average assay of 1.5 per cent nickel and 0.3 per cent copper. Down the hillside to the south and 35 ft. lower in elevation, No. 2 tunnel was driven under No. I and in the same direction, traversing 50 ft. of gneiss before it reached the peridotite. At this point the latter formation showed only scattered blebs of sulphides, not of commercial grade. To the west, on the same contour line as No. I tunnel, and 800 ft. around the hillside from it, No. 3 tunnel was driven 50 ft. into the hill to explore a strong gossan outcrop that assayed 0.5 per cent nickel (Fig. I). From the geological exposures on the hillside and in the tunnels, it appears that the main mass of the hill is formed of an ancient and altered gneiss complex. Into this, a sill-like injection of amphibolite (altered peridotite) was intruded, which, at least in some places, contains commercial quantities of nickel sulphide. Its structure is obscure, but it appears to dip into the hill at an angle of about 15°. In the vicinity of No. 3 tunnel a large dike of quartz diorite cuts the peridotite or amphibolite; about 140 ft. north of the portal of the tunnel, a dike of andesite 00 ft. wide cuts boldly up the hillside to break the continuity of the peridotite in that direction. The geological evidence available was not adequate to decide whether the peridotite forms a continuous sill, or occurs as isolated bodies in the gneiss. Not all of this peridotite carries commercial amounts of pentlandite, but if the mineral-

As the outcrop mines in the West developed into underground operations, systems of ground support were gradually evolved. In the early coal mines there was little need for support except near the dirt line in portals, where stone masonry was common. Where the top was shaley or broken, native pine props with light cross bars and legs furnished enough support even in Utah's 25-ft coal seams. As depth of workings increased. roofs and backs of the same general nature as those near the surface became more and more unstable and required more and more support. Some coal airways show this tendency very clearly. From the surface down the same type of roof shows deterioration which an experienced eye can translate into a measure of depth under surface rather than change in rock characteristics. Rock bolts, developed by various companies and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, have become an effective substitute for timber in sections of some metal and nonmetal mines formerly requiring escessive timber support, and further use of war surplus landing mats, chain link fencing, and a new punched channel developed by one of the steel companies has enabled other mines to operate deposits where costs of timber and lack of clearance for timber support would have prohibited mining. The block caving mines have made extensive use of reinforced concrete underground to achieve similar ends under difficult conditions. Steel sets are standard in many Bureau of Reclamation projects, although these are usually covered in with concrete to make the permanent structures the Bureau's reclamation projects require. But the use of steel in mining operations is limited and has been confined principally to the iron ore mines of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Some mines have installed used rail as posts, caps, and crossbars, but a rail section is not suited for load carrying, and used rails are generally brittle. having a tendency to fail without warning when overloaded. European mines were the first to reach the size of worked out areas and depths of cover resulting in major roof problems. The Europeans resorted to pack walls and masonry walls, in conjunction with timber arched sets. rail arches, and combination timber and rail and steel arches. The give in these pack walls and wooden blocking was supplemented by a hinge in the center of the arch. This design is called an articulated arch Through various refinements of this principle of the support giving graduallv with the load. Toussaint-Heintzmann developed the yielding or sliding arches, in which yield is accomplished by friction in the overlapping joints of the arch. This type has gained widespread acceptance in the Ruhr and Lorraine Basin and is being manufactured by Bethlehem Steel for sale in this country. In North America the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, followed by certain iron ore mines in upper Michigan and Canada, were the first to employ these arches to any extent. The practice was later adopted by Kennecott at Ruth, Nev., and by others. Despite high initial cost, the use of these arches is growing in many parts of the country because of their suitability in heavy ground. In its present form of manufacture the yield-able arch consists of open U-shaped rolled section with heavy beads on the edge. The open edge of the U is placed toward the wall. The section nests in another section of the same dimensions, and an arch can be built up from rolled radii and tangents of various weights and lengths. Sections are fastened together by U bolts and saddles. The lap on the joint varies from 12 to 24 in., and ordinarily the bolts are tightened with a 1-in. drive air wrench. The arches are spaced with channel struts held by J bolts and saddles. Sections can also be obtained that are composed of various combinations of radii and tangents and true circles. The joints can be placed to bear against anticipated loads and asymmetrical loads imposed by dipping strata. In the arches now being manufactured clearance widths up to 19 ft are obtainable in weights of sections from 9 to 30 lb per ft. The circular cross sections are available in the same weights ranging from 8 to 16 ft diam. At present most of the arches sold are supplied only in carload lots. It is hoped that demand will grow so that distributors can stock various weights and sections to give small operators a chance to try this new type of rock support under their own particular conditions. Several excellent papers have discussed the properties of various sections now manufactured, the dimensions of the sets obtainable, and their application under widely differing conditions. The present article will describe the methods and results of a special use of the arches at Kaiser Steel mine No. 3. Sunnyside, Utah. Problem at Mine No. 3 : In 1953 Kaiser Steel Corp. laid out Sunnyside mine No. 3 to recover coking coal left by the previous operator, Utah Fuel Co.. below workings that had been abandoned in 1928. Two seams had been worked, the upper and lower, separated by 30 to 42 ft of rock. Approximately 10 million tons of coal had been extracted from this area some 3000 ft down the itch from the outcrop to a 1500-ft depth of cover. he authors suggest that a number of the types of yield phenomena which have been observed in high-purity fcc metals are due to dislocation interactions bccurring at the surface of the crystals rather than due to volume effects. Since rather different inter-pretationS2,7,12,14,15,21-23 of these effects have been suggested, it is of some importance to ascertain the role of the surface in these yield phenomena. It should be first noted that the high-purity fcc metals appear to exhibit several distinct types of yield phenomena. The "unloading yield point" which is observed on reloading the specimen after removing the applied load has been found to be independent of the time of holding in the unloaded condition. If however the specimen is aged while under load and re-tested without removing the load, a yield point is observed which does depend on the aging time and tem-perature. Feng and Kramer suggest that the removal of the unloading yield point on removing sufficient material from the surface of the specimen indicates that the effect is associated with dislocation interactions at the specimen surface. Their observations are counter to those of Haasen and Kelly5 and Birnbaum.12 Since the unloading yield points are extremely small (-2 pct of the flow stress) the results of the surface removal will depend on whether the material is removed uniformly over the gage length. The introduction of small etch pits or the removal of more material from one portion of the specimen than from another will result in preferential yielding and obliteration of the yield point. With the normal electropolishing techniques it would be difficult to avoid these effects. The data obtained by Aaron and Birnbaum, Fig. 10, on aluminum polycrystalline specimens indicate that, although the unloading yield point and the strain-aging yield point are not simply additive, a time- and temperature-dependent yield point is observed under conditions where no creep is observed. This does not agree with the results of Feng and Kramer but does agree with the results on copper15 and gold.7~23 The source of the discrepancy may be the procedure used by Feng and Kramer to correct their time-dependent yield points for the effect of creep. Since the strain-aging yield point is not independent of the pre-aging strain rate, Fig. 11, the effects of creep cannot

None of the currently used methods of testing bentonites as binders for strengthening iron ore pellets is entirely adequate by itself. Since more knowledge was needed about 1) which properties of bentonite most affect pellet strength, and 2) the precise mechanism by which strengthening is produced, attention was paid to possible new techniques for rating bentonites. With the structural nature of bentonites — in particular, the montmorillonite component — the possibility of rating bentonites on the basis of zeta potential was investigated. These bentonites were also rated by conventional tests and measurements, including colloid content, barrel yield, pH, chemical analysis and physical tests on green and dry pellets. A mechanism for pellet bonding based on electro-kinetic forces between the bentonite and the iron ore concentrate appears to be feasible. In pelletizing, from 6 to 18 lbs of bentonite is added per ton of concentrate to give strength to the green and dry pellets. In some operations even more bentonite than is required for strengthening purposes must be added for moisture adsorption to pennit balling of the concentrate. Since bentonite is thus a major item in pelletizing, more knowledge about the way in which bentonites act as binders and better ways of rating this ability would help in the difficult job of selecting the right bentonite for a given concentrate. The fact of the matter is that although several methods are in current use for testing bentonites, none of these methods are consistently foolproof. For example, a given bentonite may rate high by several standard tests yet turn out to be a poor binder, and of course the reverse also occurs. Actually, more knowledge is needed about 1) which properties of bentonite most affect pellet strength, and 2) the precise mechanism by which strengthening is produced. In this study attention is therefore paid to possible new techniques for rating bentonites. With the structural nature of bentonites as a starting point, we investigated the possibility of rating bentonites on the basis of the zeta potential, i.e., the electrokinetic ootential on the montmorillonite colloids — the main component of bentonite binders. The zeta potential technique was applied to a range of commercial bentonites from several areas in the U.S. and abroad. High-purity magnesium single crystals, oriented with basal plane parallel to stress axis, were deformed in tension at room temperature so as to form second-order (1011)- (1012) twins. Investigation by optical and replica electron microscopy revealed that these twins can support very large internal strains approaching 1000 pct and that fracture follows as a direct consequence of these strains. At low strains the basal plane within (10i1)- (10i2) twins rotates with increasing deformation until it becomes approximately parallel to the twin boundaries. This rotation is not consistent with deformation by basal slip in the double twin, but may be rationalized in terms of nonbasal slip. Observations also indicate that basal slip in the primary (1011) twin, prior to second-order twinning, may contribute to this rotation. Deformation markings that are difficult to interpret in terms of slip on previously observed systems were noted in the twin bands. A possible means of rationalizing these markings is to relate them to grain boundary shear. The fracture associated with these twins is thought to initiate by formation of voids at the twin boundaries. These grow into microcracks, with ultimate fracture occurring by tearing of the interconnecting regions. THE significance of deformation and fracture along second-order (10i1)-(10i2) twins in polycrystalline magnesium1-' and many magnesium alloys4 was discussed in a previous paper.5 It was noted that this double twinning mode effectively controls the room-temperature deformation and fracture of magnesium single crystals, oriented with the basal plane parallel to the tensile axis. Reed-Hill and Robertson6 observed that, although these crystals may fracture at a macroscopic strain of less than 1 pct, shear strains up to 1000 pct could occur within (1011)- (10i2) twin bands. They concluded that the fracture was "ductile" and resulted from concentrating the deformation into a very small volume. The present research was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the deformation and fracture associated with these twins. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The experimental procedure involved straining high-purity magnesium single crystals in tension at room temperature. Specimens were oriented so that the applied stress direction was within 2 deg of the [1010] crystal axis. The specimen cross section was rectangular with faces closely parallel to (1210) and (0002). The specimen preparation and testing procedures have been described in detail elsewhere.5 Second-order (1011)- (1072) twins nucleated during straining were studied using optical and replica electron microscopy techniques. For the latter, cellulose acetate-carbon double replicas were employed. Observations were made on the (1210) crystal surface, which is the plane of shear for twins of this type. In addition to the single crystals, some investigations were carried out on longitudinal polycrystalline specimens. These were obtained from high-purity magnesium plate with a texture in which the basal planes of the grains tended to be nearly parallel to the specimen axis. All. polycrystalline specimens were annealed prior to testing in order to produce a coarse grain structure, permitting Laue back-reflection X-ray photographs to be obtained from grains of interest. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS a) Deformation Within ( 101 l )-( 1072) Twins. Fig. 1 is an optical micrograph demonstrating the extent of the plastic deformation that can occur in (1011)-(10i2) twin bands. Notice at the lower left corner of the photograph the large displacement of the dark band (a polishing step) where it crosses the twins. The shear strain in the twin band at this position was computed to be 700 pct, using the ratio of step width to twin thickness. It was previously shown5 that (1011)- (1012) twin bands are often composed of small, separate twins aligned close to the macroscopic habit plane. Fig. 2 is an electron micrograph from near the upper end of the twin band in Fig. 1. This illustrates that the twin habit often does not coincide exactly with the macroscopic band habit, but may be inclined at a slightly smaller angle to the matrix basal plane. Cadmium-coppeR precipitate, a byproduct of the purification stage of the zinc plant, is composed mainly of zinc, cadmium and copper in varying amounts depending on the efficiency of precipitation and the cadmium and copper contents of the impure solution treated. The composition range is approximately: cadmium 10-12 pct, copper 6-8 pct, and zinc 3&35 pct. As received at the cadmium plant, the precipitate is a dark gray to black press cake produced by filter pressing the flocculent cadmium-copper precipitate formed when impure zinc solution is agitated with zinc dust. The details of the cadmium-copper precipitation are to be found in the paper "Electrolytic Zinc at Risdon, Tasmania," by W. C. Snow. Transactions AIME, 121, 501. The treatment, in addition to recovering cadmium as metal, yields a copper product as a residue for realization and recovers in solution for return to the zinc plant, the excess of zinc dust used during purification. The recovery of cadmium metal is approximately 200 tons† per year, but, with the amount of copper residue recovered, varies with the zinc production tonnage, composition of the original concentrates, degree of roasting and other operational factors. The operations involved in the recovery of the foregoing materials are carried out in a building adjacent to the purification section of the zinc plant and can best be described by dividing the process into the following stages: 1. Oxidation and Grinding of the cadmium-copper precipitate. 2. Leaching and Filtering. 3. Precipitation of cadmium. 4. Oxidation and Grinding of the precipitated cadmium. 5. Leaching oxidized cadmium precipitate and Purification of leach solution. 6. Electrolysis. 7. Melting, Casting and Packing. A feature of the process is the use of two distinct solution circuits. Spent electrolyte from the zinc plant circuit containing about 10 pct sulphuric acid is used as the primary solvent of the cadmium and zinc present in the oxidized precipitate. When the cadmium is later separated by precipitation and filtering, the filtrate, originally zinc plant spent electrolyte and now fortified in zinc, is returned to the zinc plant. The precipitated cadmium, after oxidation, is redissolved in spent electrolyte from cadmium electrolysis which solution is in closed circuit within the cadmium plant except for discards to the zinc plant circuit as mentioned in Section 5 hereinafter. (Fig 1.) Details of the various operations follow. I. Oxidation and Grinding of the Cadminm-copper Precipitate The precipitate having had a preliminary drying by compressed air in Dehne filter presses in the zinc plant is trucked to a storage platform of sufiicient length to store 3 to 4 days' production separately. After 48 hr exposure to atmosphere, oxidation is sufficient to enable all cadmium and zinc but only a portion of the copper to be dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid. In both the Flat River district of southeast Missouri and the Joplin district of southwest Missouri the lead concentrates are of very high grade, free of arsenic, antimony and bismuth, and contain no gold and very little silver. The general practice in both districts is to smelt the concentrates containing 70 to 85 per cent lead on Scotch hearths, to recover 70 to 85 per cent of the lead, and then smelt in a blast furnace the slag formed in the Scotch hearths to bring the total recovery of lead from lead concentrates to over 97.5 per cent. At the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., no Scotch hearths are used. In the other smelters in the district the blast furnace plays a minor role to the Scotch hearth . The concentrates produced from the Flat River district are either table concentrates or flotation concentrates containing: Both types of concentrates are received at Herculaneum in box cars after being sampled. Great care is taken in weighing and sampling of cars of concentrates and in the determination of moisture and lead contents. The concentrates are unloaded into bins by an adaptation of scoop grain unloader. Four men unload and sweep a 40 to 45-ton box car of concentrates in 30 minutes. The same grade of concentrates is received each day and no metal-bearing fluxes are available. The problem is to get as high a recovery as possible as cheaply as possible from the high-grade lead concentrates produced by the company's concentrating mills. Sintering The bulk of the sulphur is removed from the concentrates and the fine concentrate particles are agglomerated by double roasting on typical Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines.

President Howe : It is not so clear to me that the facts which Dr. Waldo brings forward really argue that the nature of the combination between copper and aluminum differs from that of the combination between copper and zinc or copper and tin. As regards electric conductivity, I suppose that the fact, which he thinks points to a special intimate kind of union between aluminum and copper, is that the line in his Fig. 1 is neither straight nor uniformly curved, but that its curvature varies rapidly, not to say abruptly. But we find just such variation in like curves for the copper-zinc and copper-tin alloys. Thus, a slight addition of zinc or tin to copper causes a change in color wholly out of proportion to the quantity added; and, as we add zinc or tin to copper, the tenacity rises very greatly, only to fall off abruptly with further additions of either of these metals. (communication to the Secretary*) :—The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is reduced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, however, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnusou did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given, it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20' C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid was added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating-action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions, and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions deduced by Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson' would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. Moreover, the authors used somewhat-coarse particles of gold, and did not try how far time was a factor, although it is obvi-
