INTRODUCTION The demand for aluminum metal and thus for alumina and bauxite (the primary sources), is expected to increase at an annual rate of about 6% through the year 1980. It appears that about 90% of the future aluminum metal requirements could be produced at domestic plants but the production would remain dependent on the use of imported bauxite and alumina. The U.S. dependence on foreign bauxite and alumina is of considerable economic and strategic concern because availability and prices are very sensitive to changes in the political climate in the exporting countries. Dependence of the United States on foreign sources of bauxite closely parallels its dependence on foreign sources of oil, particularly since ten countries, including most of the world's major bauxite exporting countries, recently have formed the Inter- national Bauxite Association (IBA) for the specific purpose of increasing revenue for the participating countries. Although it is clear that long-term aluminum requirements cannot be fulfilled by domestic resources of bauxite,; the U.S. has an almost unlimited supply of aluminous resources such as Kaolinite (38% Al203), Alunite (37% Al203), Dawsonite (35% A1203), and Anorthosite (29% A1203)

TITANIUM, because of its high strength, weight ratio, and high melting point, became the metal of the jet age. Zirconium, because of its low neutron cross section and high corrosion resistance to hot water, became an integral part of the nuclear era. Since both metals are very similar chemically, more or less the same process is used for their production. The sudden rise of this new industry of titanium and zirconium seems to have caused some uncertainty as to the future development of processes for making these metals. Although zirconium was discovered in 1789 and titanium in 1790, it was not until 1945, six years after W. J. Kroll patented his process, that F, S. Wartman of the U. S. Bureau of Mines perfected the technique of producing ductile titanium, and it was not until 1946 that Kroll perfected the technique of producing ductile zirconium in commercial quantities. Since then the Government and private industry have spent millions of dollars each year constantly searching for new methods, with the hope that some day titanium can be produced as economically as aluminum and magnesium or as cheaply as stainless steel.

Ore deposits of the western U.S. are divisible broadly into two genetic groups, a smaller one that fits the plate tectonic model of subduction and a larger one that appears unrelated to subduction. Some of the middle Paleozoic and lower-middle Mesozoic ore deposits in the western U.S. are associated with eugeosynclinal rocks and lie a few hundred kilometers west of reconstructed continent margins. These deposits probably formed as a result of subduction beneath oceanic or thin continental crust that was analogous to subduction predicated for the Kuroko massive sulfide deposits of Japan. Some middle Mesozoic porphyry copper deposits may have formed east of the continental margin when subduction-generated magmas were emplaced high in continental crust in a manner analogous to subduction-generated magmas that formed the Andean porphyry copper deposits. Most Cretaceous-Cenozoic ore deposits lie in a broad region extending many hundreds of kilometers east of the continent margin and characterized by conjugate tectonic zones, high terrestial heat flow, and low seismic velocity in the upper mantle. The deposits likely were formed in relation to magmas generated along the conjugate tectonic zones during differential northwestward drift and internal wrenching of the continental plate.

For this purpose Table I. was constructed by grouping all determinations made by the same method, and the probable errors were calculated. A new method is proposed to obtain automatically an unbiased estimate of the interdendritic spacing A. It is shown that the structure can be built by a random distribution of a rectangular basic unit. The usual definition of the interdendritic spacing yields a value 1 which, coupled with A, gives the shape of the basic rectangular unit. A study of the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and solidification rate was conducted as a part of a research program on dendritic solidification. For any comparison between theory and experiments to be meaningful, it is necessary to measure reproducible and clearly defined spacings. Fig. 1 shows clearly that even in a fairly simple structure such measurements are difficult. if we compare photos (a) and (b), we can hardly assess which one shows the larger spacing. Moreover, the quantity to be measured can be defined in several ways. On a small scale, dendrites seem to be distributed in a very regular and ordered way. However, on a larger scale, this regularity no longer exists. The usual way to measure spacings is to pick up some rows of dendrite stalks; such measurements are obviously biased since less orderly regions are not taken into account. A more objective method is to section the picture with randomly oriented straight lines and average the measured interdendritic spacings. The purpose of this paper is to show that such measurements, which can be conducted automatically, yield objective and reproducible results which are directly related to characteristic features of the dendritic structure. I) THEORETICAL ANALYSIS 1-1) Mathematical Morphology and Function of Co-variance. Matheronl and Serra2 enlarced- the definition and geometrical meaning of the notion of covariance to encompass problems in mathematical morphology. A brief review of part of their theory can be stated as follows. Let A' be an isolated particle, and let us consider a group of two scanning points h is the vector joinlng these points, h its modulus, and a its direction. Let us also define a boolean function, k(x), whose value is 1 if x lies inside the particle and 0 if it 1s outside. Using liquid tin as the solvent metal, the heats of solution of silver and gold in dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys have been determined at 723°K by solution calorimetry. From the values obtained, the various enthalpy interaction coefficients in the liquid solutions have been calculated. The self-interaction coefficients Au and Ag values of 2413 and -6322 cal per g-atom in binary Au-Sn and Ag-Sn alloys, respectively. For an alloy containing 0.04 mole fraction Ag, Au is equal to 2443 cal per g-atom, and in an alloy containing 0.04 mole fraction Au, Ag has a value of —8883 cal per g-atom. Ag Au has been determined as —2650 cal per g-atom. ADDITION of a second solute to a dilute binary alloy may cause striking changes in the thermodynamic characteristics of the alloy. As yet, such influences cannot be reliably predicted and it is only by accumulation and critical assessment of data that definite patterns can be established. Solute interactions in dilute solutions were first treated mathematically by Wagner,1 who derived expressions for the Gibbs energy interaction coefficients. For an alloy consisting of. two dilute solutes, i and j, in a solvent s, these coefficients are given by: where yi is the activity coefficient of component i and x represents the mole fraction of solute or solvent. Other interaction coefficients have since been established in terms of the various partial molar thermodynamic properties of an alloy; the definitions of these are summarized in a recent paper by Lupis and Elliott.2 Mathematical and experimental studies of such coefficients have received much attention recently, providing a very useful theoretical background to an understanding of the nature of solute interactions taking place in dilute solutions. One of the definitions to arise from such work has been the extension of Wagner's treatment by Lupis and Elliott4 to include an enthalpy interaction coefficient, defined as. where ?Hi is the relative partial molar enthalpy of component i. ?Hi is related to the relative partial molar enthalpy at infinite dilution, ?Hio, and to the enthalpy interaction coefficients by the expression: Values of ?Hi can often be obtained with a high degree of accuracy by calorimetry, and, if the composition of the alloy is carefully controlled by making calculated solute additions throughout a series of measurements, application of Eq. [2] will enable reliable enthalpy interaction coefficients to be determined. Partial heats of solution must be investigated as a function of solute concentrations down to xi = 0, and, since ? values are obtained from the slope of mi plotted against x, great care must be taken to obtain precise data. The data for binary systems which are presently available often require extrapolation of ?Hi values from compositions as great as xi = 0.05 or even 0.1 to obtain limiting heats of solution. Reliable enthalpy interaction coefficients are thus impossible to obtain from published data for most of the alloy systems already investigated. The aim of the present work was to determine values of Au, Ag, Ag, and Au in the limit xsn -1 for the relatively simple Ag-Au-Sn system and from these results to gain some insight into the possible influence

THE fall meeting of the Petroleum Division at Fort Worth, Texas, Oct. 19 and 20, attracted even a larger number of members and guests than had been expected. Over three hundred registered the first day though the attendance and interest in the program was so keen that it was necessary to begin technical sessions without. waiting for registration. Members were present from as far away as Venezuela and while the larger attendance was from the Mid-Continent and Texas fields, California and the eastern states were represented by influential delegations. One pleasing feature of the meeting was the presence of a number of the older executives of the oil industry who evi-dently have come to realize the importance of the work the Division is doing in advancing technology. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Production Engineering section of the Division. E. 0. Bennett, chief production engineer for the Marland Oil Co. of Texas, and chairman of the Fort Worth Sec-tion. of the A.I.M.E., served as general chairman. J. B. Umpleby, president of the Petroleum Reclamation Co. and vice-chairman of the. Division was in charge of. the program with a special committee in charge of the technical sessions, of which A. C. Rubel of the Union Oil Co. was chairman. The sessions were held in the ball room of the Texas Hotel, which also served as general headquarters. The Wednesday morning session was devoted to the air-gas lift, John M. Lovejoy, chairman of the Division, presiding. The first paper, on the "Principles Under-lying the Air-Gas Lift." by J. 0. Lewis, was presented by R. R. Brandenthaler and discussed by Messrs. Love-joy and Millikan. Mr. Brandenthaler's own paper on the "Effect of Gas Lift on Physical Properties of Oil" followed and was discussed by Messrs. Umpleby, Walker, Mills, Bennett, Williams and Van der Gracht, the dis-cussion turning mainly on what is known and what unknown regarding oxidation of oil under various con-ditions. The third paper of the morning, "Handling Recirculated Gas," by R. D. Gibbs, was presented by Mr. Taylor. The discussion that followed was general and brought out a large amount of data on the costs and results of compression versus, absorption in total gasoline recovery from gas. The next group of papers dealt with "Mechanical Installations of Air-Gas Lift," the first by E. V. Foran on the Texas district outside the Gulf Coast, the second by L. L. Brundred on the Gulf Coast, the third on Kansas and Oklahoma other than Seminole by R. W. Bond, the fourth on Seminole by C. R. Swartz, and the fifth relating to California by H. C. Miller. Some of these were read by title in order to give more time for discussion which was active and participated in by. Mills, Griswold and others.

THE short-time tensile-strength test, while it has not attained the practical importance of the creep test at elevated temperatures, has the advantage of being rapid and is satisfactory for determining relative strengths. For platinum and its alloys, which frequently are used at high temperatures under ill-defined conditions, the short-time test provides useful data that aid in the selection of the most promising alloy for each use. Measurements have been made upon 13 alloys, using wire 0.0031 in. in diameter, the choice of alloys and of wire size being determined by the requirements of a practical problem. Later the measurements were extended to higher temperatures by the use of heavier wire, 0.010 in, in diameter. APPARATUS The use of fine wire made the necessary equipment very simple, since no effort was made to measure the elongation. A small platinum-wound horizontal furnace was used, ½ in. in internal diameter by 1 ft. long, with the wire threaded through it. The wire, clamped at one end while the other ran over a ball-bearing pulley, of a total length of 29 in., was loaded directly by running sea sand into an attached basket, making the rate of loading and not of elongation constant. The sand flowed from a funnel, under a head of 3 in., into the basket. 3 in. below the orifice, at the rate of 170 grants per minute. Pulley friction and bending resist-ance of the wire as well as the force of impact of the sand could be neg-lected, being 3 grams and 0.5 grams, respectively. Furnace temperature .was uniform within ±5° C. over a length of 3 in., although a drift with time occurred, the largest amount being 20° C. No provision was necessary for a controlled atmosphere.

ALTHOUGH the retiring Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division, Charles Henry Behre, Jr., does not say "you all" he is a product of the deep South, since he was born at Atlanta, on March 16, 1896. At the Boy Scout age he moved to New Orleans, where his father owned an ice plant, which seems an intelligent business for that climate. Intelligence evidently runs in the family, for Charlie, as his friends call him, has one sister who is a professor of zoology and another who is a concert pianist. Charlie has no explanation of why, when he reached college age, he decided to go to the University of Wisconsin, other than something more than an ordinary boyish interest in science, and the reputation which Wisconsin then enjoyed. At Madison he fell under the influence of Eliot Blackwelder, chose paleontology as his objective, and transferred, at the end of his sophomore year, to the University of Chicago, where the paleontological panorama seemed more extensive. He took his B.S. there in 1918, and graduated into the U. S. Army, where he eventually became a Sergeant in the Medical Corps.

THIS paper gives observations on ground movement and subsidence resulting from pillar drawing in the Lick Run section of Montour No. 10 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. adjacent to solid coal owned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Experimental mine in Snowden Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The investigation was planned by George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau, who arranged the necessary cooperation with Dr. L. E. Young, vice president of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Engineers of that company placed permanent monuments on the surface to establish the boundaries of the coal owned by the Bureau and to furnish fixed points to which all levels were referred. Engineers of the Experimental mine staff then covered the ground under observation with a checkerwork of monuments made of oak pegs set into the ground at 50-ft. intervals in two directions at right angles to each other. The level of these pegs was determined first from Dec. 16 to 30, 1929; again from May 25 to June 5, 1930, and finally from July 7 to 15, 1931. Observations were then discontinued because work had been stopped temporarily in this part on Montour 10 mine.

This paper describes a comprehensive computer program, developed under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, that simulates the performance of coal preparation plants. A typical plant configuration may include several different washers, crushers, and screens as well as stream blenders and stream splitters, interconnected in whatever manner the user may specify. The program will predict the mass and energy yields of each unit and the properties of each flowstream (weight, ash, pyritic sulfur, total sulfur, and energy distributions), provided the feed properties and appropriate values for various control parameters are given. The program is used to assess washability characteristics of different coals, to determine the effectiveness of different plant operating conditions, and to compare the performance of various plant configurations. A brief description is given of the methods used to carry out the calculations for each type of unit. Results of some calculations are also presented. These results illustrate the versatility of the program for analyzing both simple and complex plant configurations. The paper concludes with a description of other accomplishments and future plans.

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in gyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics, and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05-20 g/L (0.002-0.7 oz per gal) SO2. The effects of iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation, and pH on SO2 oxidation are also described.

One aspect of ocean mining that is frequently overlooked in discussions is the problem of establishing some form of legal control over the seas. Much of the discussion centers on mining in territorial waters, which are controlled by the various countries according to the Geneva Convention on the Continental Shelf, and perhaps by political subdivisions of countries such as the individual states of the U.S. But as technology improves and the mining of deeper waters becomes feasible, the problem of rights outside the continental shelf and territorial waters becomes a significant factor for anyone expending the time and capital for development. Several schemes are possible for regulating ocean mining but as yet none have been instituted, except what might be termed the "wait and see" approach. Even some of the coastal states in the U.S. have no regulations governing mining in the territorial waters under their jurisdiction. Until some regulation is formulated, there may well be little development in ocean mining due to the high risk of capital involved, both with respect to companies wishing to invest their own funds and financial institutions funding a venture to develop offshore mineral deposits.

measurements of the anisotropy in Young's modulus produced in copper by rolling 95 pct reduction in thickness below room temperature have been carried out in order to study the dependence of the texture on rolling temperature. The results clearly show the transition from a copper-type texture to a brass-type texture as the temperature of rolling is lowered. The intermediate textures observed can be described very well as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures. These results cormbined with other texture measurements make possible afresh review of the experimental facts velating to rolling textures in fee metals and, as a consequence, a critical examination of the current theories is presented. PREVIOUS experiments have shown that the transition from the copper- to the brass-type rolling texture is clearly displayed and can be quantitatively analyzed by measurements of the anisotropy of Young's modulus.' Application of this method to the Cu-Zn alloy system showed that the description of the texture transition as a gradual rotation of the grains from the orientation characteristic of the copper texture to the {110}(112) texture of brass2 was inconsistent with the data. Instead, the data suggested that the texture within the transition region could be described as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures.5 Unfortunately, it was difficult to establish this point conclusively because of the inadequacy of corrections for the composition dependence of the single-crystal elastic constants. Since a rigorous establishment of the nature of this texture transition is essential to our understanding of the formation of rolling textures in fee metals, it is clearly important to undertake an investigation in which the composition dependence of the elastic constants would not enter. A suitable composition-independent texture transition is provided by the well-established variation in the rolling texture of copper with rolling temperature. This temperature-dependent texture transformation has been studied by smallman' in several fee alloys and by Müller5 and others"' in copper. They observed that the texture characteristic of copper rolled at room temperature changed to a brass-type texture when the rolling temperature was lowered to 77°K. Although it is not possible to decide unequivocally from the published pole figures whether or not the 77°K rolling texture of copper is entirely of the brass type,' this complication does not affect the main purpose of the present investigation. In addition to establishing the nature of the texture within the transition region, the modulus data should also provide a determination of the temperature at which the transition occurs as well as the temperature range over which the transition extends. This information when combined with the modulus data on Cu-Zn alloys would then provide a considerable body of new information on textures in fee metals. Since these modulus results and the data obtained from pole-figure studies must be internally consistent, it is appropriate to compile a brief summary of the experimental observations based on all available methods rather than on the pole-figure data alone as has been done in the past. The primary purpose of such a summary would be to yield a more precise definition of the experimental facts on the rolling textures of fee metals, and thus greatly facilitate our evaluation of various proposed theories in this field. The final section of this paper is devoted to this compilation of consistent, experimental facts and their application to the various theories. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two 18-lb ingots of cathode copper of 99.99 pct purity were induction-melted under a nitrogen atmosphere in a graphite crucible and chill-cast into a steel mold. The ingots were repeatedly cold-rolled and annealed (I hr at 500°C) into slabs about 1 1/8 in. thick. Blocks 3 1/4 in. wide, 2 1/4 in. long, and 1.000 in. thick were machined from each slab. The rolling schedule used was the same as in the previous investigation1 and the final thickness of the sheet was 0.050 in. with a rolling reduction of thickness of 95 pct instead of 97.5 pct as in the previous work.' The compositions and temperatures of the cold baths used for the low-temperature rolling were as shown in Table I. After each pass the rolled strip was immediately immersed in the cold bath for about 1 min or until the bubbling of the bath had subsided. The modulus data were taken within 2 hr after the rolled strip was warmed to room temperature for the first time, so that effects due to recrystallization were minimized. The modulus specimens were in the shape of flat bars, 3 in. long, 4 in. wide, and 0.050 in. thick, cut with their long dimensions oriented at 15-deg intervals between the rolling direction and the transverse direction. The values of Young's modulus were deduced from measurements of the frequency at which these long narrow bars were set into longitudinal, resonant vibration as previously described.9 To excite the mechanical vibrations in the specimen, an electromagnetic drive similar to that employed by Thompson and lass" was used. The International Mining Convention held in Nelson, B; C., May 17 , to 19, was attended by nearly 500 delegates, of whom about 100 were from Spokane, 150 from the Slocan district, and the others from different points in Canada and the United States. Arrangements were in charge of the Nelson, Slocan and Eastern British Columbia Mining Men's Club, under the direction of Secretary Fred A. Starkey, assisted by the City of Nelson, Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia and Nelson Board of Trade. The fabrication of p-n junctions in GaAsl-,P, alloys by a vapor-phase gowth technique has for the first tirne resulted in room-temperature injection lasers capable of operating over a broad range of wavelengths extending into the visible region of the spectrum. The shortest wavelength achieved to date is 6750A at room tetnperature. In addition, at 78°K the threshold current density values for these lasers are generally the lo~vest reported, and the emitted radiation extends to the lozc,est wavelength ever attained (6350A). With lasers fabricated from material containing 14 pct Gap, quanticm efficiencies of 26 pct and peak power outputs of 25 zu were obtained at room temperature. ALTHOUGH room-temperature operation of GaAs injection lasers has been well-documented,&apos;-5 the operation of GaAsl-,P, (x > 0) laser diodes has been restricted to relatively low temperatures.8-&apos;0 This has been previously attributed5, 7, 10-12 partially to the difficulty of preparing single-crystalline GaAsl-& alloys having a high degree of chemical homogeneity and purity. Also, with these materials it has been difficult to prepare high-quality, abrupt p-12 junctions by diffusion techniques; and, in turn, this has made it difficult to obtain optimum electrical properties for room-temperature operationL3 in the resulting laser diodes. As a result, GaAsl-,P, laser diodes have not been efficient enough to permit operation at room temperature. For example, using diffused structures, only a few diodes were obtained which could be operated even close to room temperature (255K)." Recently, a vapor-phase growth method of preparing epitaxial deposits of GaAsl - .P, alloys has been described,14 and the high-purity and homogeneity of these materials has been previously demonstrated. Of special significance, with this technique, n- or p -type doping can be initiated or discontinued at any time and at almost any rate during the crystal growth so that the donor and the acceptor concentrations can be easily controlled to obtain desired impurity profiles. This permits high-quality, abrupt p-TZ junctions to be vapor-phase grown entirely during the crystal growth process, so that diffusion or other p-n junction fabrication processes are unnecessary. After growth, the device does not have to be heated to elevated temperatures, which avoids the possible unwanted introduction and motion of both impurities and lattice defects. Using the vapor-phase growth method cited above, over 300 room-temperature injection lasers have been prepared from GaAsl-,P, alloys having compositions in the range of 0 5 x 5 0.41. These lasers have emitted cohe~ent radiation in the spectral range of 8350 to 6350A at 78°K or from 9000 to 6750A at room temperature. The threshold current densities of the best lasers are independent of the alloy composition over the range 0 < x < 0.2 and compare favorably with values for good GaAs lasers.&apos; MATERIAL PREPARATION Multilayer, epitaxial deposits of GaAsl-,P, alloys are prepared by a vapor-growth technique described elsewhere.14 With this technique, the individual layers which comprise the multilayer structure are prepared sequentially in the deposition apparatus without interrupting the crystal growth. The epitaxial layers are deposited on GaAs substrate surfaces oriented normal to the ( 100) direction. The substrate wafers employed in this study were usually doped with tellurium to an electron concentration of approximately 2 x 10" per cu cm. To avoid strains, the first 10 to 15 p of the deposited material is uniformly graded from pure GaAs to the specific GaAsl- ,P, alloy composition of interest. The GaAsl - ,P, alloy growth is then continued to form a layer of constant composition having a thickness in the range of 25 to 75 p. Both the graded region and the layer of constant composition are doped with selenium to an electron concentration of about 2 x 10" per cu cm. The p region of the diode is then incorporated in the crystal by abruptly changing the dopant concentrations in the vapor phase to facilitate doping with zinc. This layer has a hole concentration of approximately 3 X 1019 per cu cm and typically is 50 p thick. DEVICE FABRICATION In general, the GaAs substrate and the region of graded composition are removed. Ohmic contacts are made to the n-type side by tin evaporation and to the p-type side by an electrodeless nickel deposition. This is followed by an electrodeless deposition of gold on both sides. The crystal wafer is then cleaved along (110) planes and sawed into rectangular parallelepipeds. Typical dimensions are 100 by 300 for the junction area and 100 µ for the diode height. The diodes are either soldered to a copper stud or pressure-mounted in a copper clip. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Approximately 400 laser diodes having compositions in the range of 0.41 have been prepared by the method described above. Each laser was routinely tested at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The lasers were operated with l-psec current pulses at a repetition rate of 60 pulses per sec. The parameters of greatest practical interest are the photon energy or wavelength of the laser output and the threshold current density. Fig. 1 shows the variation of photon energy with alloy composition at 78°K. The composition was determined from the lattice constant of the material obtained by X-ray back-reflection measurements. THERE are at least two effects of temperature on the stress required to produce plastic flow. 1) Metals plastically strained for the same amount at different temperatures possess different stress-strain curves and different internal structures (e.g., nature and density of imperfections). 2) There is both experimental and theoretical evidence that the stress necessary to produce plastic flow may vary with temperature even though the internal structure remains constant.1-5 Much of the data in the literature is difficult to interpret because these two effects are simultaneously present. In the work reported here, they are considered separately. Standard 0.505 in. tensile specimens were prepared from high-purity Mond nickel and OFHC copper. Nickel specimens were annealed in hydrogen at 1150°C for 30 min and furnace cooled. This produced an average grain diameter of 1.4 mm. Copper specimens were annealed in vacuum at 525°C for 6 hr and furnace cooled. This produced an average grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Nickel tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at 500°K, whereas copper tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at room temperature. All specimens were cooled to 74°K and heated to room temperature. After these treatments all of the tensile specimens of a given set possessed identical structures. All specimens were returned to the tensile machine and tested at various temperatures and constant cross-head speed. Many of the tensile curves showed well defined yields but, in order to minimize personal judgment, the yield was always chosen as the stress corresponding to 0.2 pct plastic deformation. Results are summarized in the graph of yield vs temperature of test, Fig. 1. All of the specimens corresponding to any one line have had identical treatments and, therefore, have identical internal structures. Thus, each line gives the relation between yield stress and temperature for one constant internal structure. The lowest line, which is for annealed nickel, shows no measurable variation of yield with temperature. This is similar to Blewitt&apos;s6 results on copper single crystals, but a variation in yield with temperature was found by Andrade and Henderson&apos; in single crystals of nickel, and by Car-recker and Hibbard8 in annealed polycrystalline copper. The three other lines, which are for prestrained materials, show that there is a linear relation between yield stress and temperature when the internal structure remains constant. Such a relation might be expected from a rate equation such as that of Kauzmannl on the assump- tion that the activation energy is either independent of or linear with temperature. These results would also be expected if the shear moduli of copper and nickel are linear functions of temperature for, as Cottrell and Stokes have pointed out," in all dislocation theories of strength the flow stress appears proportional to the shear modulus of the material. In copper and nickel, since the modulus of elasticity decreases roughly linearly with increase in temperature," it is probable that the modulus of shear also decreases approximately linearly with increasing temperature. A detailed discussion of the effect of these and other factors on the temperature dependence of flow stress in face-centered-cubic metals has recently been given by Seeger.4

In 1934 the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in. cooperation with the University of Alabama began an investiga-tion of the availability of kyanite ores as a source of raw material for the manufacture of refractories. Under this program, gravity concentration and flotation tests have been made on two varieties of Georgia kyanite ore, mica schist and massive. Most of the attention has been directed to the mica schist ores, as they are more widely distributed and seem to offer greater economic possibilities than the massive ores. It is evident that the preparation of kyanite for use as a refractory material involves other considerations than the mere elimination of impurities. A concentration process that eliminates impurities satisfactorily may have to be followed by some additional treatment, since the final product must be of a coarse-ness and size ratio that will make it suitable for refractories manufacture. So far in the investigation at the Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines only the concentration problem has been considered, and this paper is intended as an interim report.
