Evidence that the United States is gradually converting to the metric system of measurement can be perceived today even by housewives in a supermarket. The question is no longer whether but when the country will have completed the conversion. To the extent that any bickering about metrication still exists, the debate now centers on such issues as finding agreement on details of implementation, and whether federal legislation should speed up the metric-conversion process or allow it to proceed along its present evolutionary and voluntary course. Apparently, the voluntary or "make-haste-slowly" approach is gaining widespread support. According to The Research Institute of America, Inc., if and when federal legislation is enacted it will likely include the following national ground rules: (1) A National Metric Conversion Board will develop and submit to the President and Congress a comprehensive plan to achieve a coordinated, minimum-cost changeover. (2) The change- over will be completed 8 to 10 years after the board's plan goes into effect, and by that time the US will be predominantly, though not exclusively, metric. (3) Costs will "lie where they fall"; subsidies, special tax concessions, and antitrust exemptions will not be authorized by the legislation. (4) The changeover will be voluntary because of the recognition that while some firms can "go metric" in a matter of weeks, others may require 15 years or more, and a few might never convert. (5) In determining whether or not to convert, on an individual company basis, adherence will be to the "rule of reason-that is, ". . . do not convert unless the engineering, economic, or other benefits outweigh any metric-related disadvantages. No one is talking about rip- ping up our railroad tracks or rewiring our homes just to conform to the practice of metric nations in Europe." (6) Government is to be part of the solution, not part of the problem; in effect, says The Research Institute of America, the leverage of federal procurement will not be exerted to force-feed the metric changeover but will be coordinated with the sector-by-sector conversion of the economy.*

IT is generally, accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sizes contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uniform bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segr6gate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants dedusting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets. DEDUSTING The practice of dedusting, sometimes called aspirating, has presented a problem in disposing of the dust and intermediate small sizes recovered in the process. It has been found that no difficulty is experienced in disposing of the intermediate sizes, since they are free of fine dust and burn freely on grates built for small coal. They handle well, flowing freely from bins and hoppers and into conveyors, and pulverize easily. They have a low angle of repose. In tests made on this size as a feed to coke ovens, the results have been excellent, in that the natural breakdown of .coal in handling and shooting in the mine gives this small-size coal good

The history of the normal oil field is supposed to show an oil graph starting high in flush production, descending more or less steeply into the curve of settled production and dropping gradually to the vanishing point of economical operation. Together with this, somewhere in the early history of the field, there appears from a vanishing point a graph showing the production of water. During the period of settled production this graph rises higher and, toward the close, unless extensive work is done in the line of correction, rises far above the oil graph to the point at which the cost of operation terminates profitable pumping. Fields that start out with a high relative content of water are generally very short-lived. Fields that never develop a water problem are exceedingly rare. The McKittrick oil field, Kern County, California, with 840 acres of proved ground, 300 wells and a present recovery per acre of 94,598 bbl. from 1898 to Aug. 1, 1930, presents a study which is an apparent reversal of the outlined normal history. Though the history of the field now covers over 30 years of operation, it is still too early and the conditions too unique to project the graph of production to completion. The present conditions and directions of change are most interesting, in that the curve of oil production is remarkably flat and the curve of water invasion, after reaching an appalling height, has shown a definite reversal and a continued decline for 10 years. Early drilling in the McKittrick field was in or prior to 1898. Development continued steadily to 1918 when the present limitations of the field were determined. Shut-offs, according to accepted practice of the time, were made by driving the shoe into a shale stratum or into a tamped-in bridge of sand, rosin and clay. Records of early days speak of three waters: (1) surface water which was fresh; (2) an intermediate sulfur water, encountered below the top oil or tar sand; (3) bottom salt water. In different portions of the field any one of these waters let into a well by faulty completion might require immediate correction to obtain satisfactory production. In many wells,

The intermetallic compounds MgzSn and Mg2Pb are two of the important series of stoichiometric compounds which magnesium forms with elements of the fourth group of the periodic system. Since there is a complete series of compounds, all possessing the same comparatively simple structure, a unique opportunity is presented to study their properties with respect to increasing atomic number of the anion as it varies from silicon and germanium, through tin and lead. The present work deals with the two lower members of this group, and it is hoped eventually that additional data regarding the silicide and germanide will be obtained. The results of such a complete study provide part of the essential basis for the empirical correlation and theoretical treatment which, in other systems, has contributed to an understanding of inter-metallic compounds and the metallic'state in general. Some experimental data are already available in the literature. However, they are fragmentary and limited in significance owing to the methods of preparation employed and the impure materials available at the time. It was our objective, therefore, using pure metals and improved metallurgical methods of preparation, to produce stoichiometric compounds of high purity for the study of their electrical and chemical properties. We felt that a detailed investigation of chemical properties, about which relatively little is known, combined with electrical properties, would be a significant contribution to the understanding of these compounds and in particular to the mechanism of corrosion associated with types of bonding in alloy systems. The chemical studies are reported elsewhere. Previous Investigations Previous work concerning the electrical properties of these compounds was undertaken in connection with the establishment of the two phase diagrams which are available in Hansenl and Beck. The first comprehensive investigation of the electrical conductivity of magnesium-tin and magnesium-lead alloys was made by Kurnakov and Stepanov.3 This was followed by Grube and Voss-kiihler4 who studied electrical conductivity and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperature and who, unlike Stepanov, appreciated the significance of the large solid solubility of tin in magnesium and took some precautions to obtain an equilibrium state. CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Can-anea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geologic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline. The headwaters of three rivers flowing to the Gulf of California are located in the Cananea Mountains: the San Pedro River, flowing to the north; the Sonora River, flowing south and west; and the Mag-dalena River, flowing west. Elenita Mountain, the highest point in the district, has an elevation of 8140 ft. The Cananea Mountains extend in a series of north-south to northwest-southeast spurs and ridges and are surrounded by gently sloping gravel plains. The mineralized area, lying across the southern and central parts of the range, is about 6 miles long and at most 2 miles wide. Elevations at the mines vary from 5300 ft at Cananea-Duluth mine at the southeast end of the district to between 6000 and 7000 ft at the west end of the mineralized area at Puertecitos-Elenita mines. Principal production has been from the intensely mineralized and altered area of Capote Basin in the central part of the district and the immediately surrounding area to the southeast. The district has produced over 2 billion lb of copper, substantial molybdenum, and minor amounts of lead, zinc, silver, and gold. Total production through 1949 is estimated at more than $300 million. In 1900 large-scale development was started at Cananea by W. C. Greene. Until World War II only high-grade ores were exploited; low-grade ores were extracted after the installation of a large concentrator in the early 1940's, and subsequent operations have been based upon mining and processing ores containing less than 1.0 pct copper from open-pit and underground workings. Mining and concentration of such low-grade ores, however, are made possible only by continued high copper prices, and active exploration for high-grade orebodies has been continued throughout the important mineralized areas. General Geology Study of the involved rock pattern at Cananea has indicated a complex geologic history for the district. Widespread alteration and mineralization have masked many of the salient features and have led to widely varying geologic interpretations over the years. Further work will probably disclose new information which will modify current beliefs. At Cananea a conformable series of sediments of probable Paleozoic age was deposited on an unknown basement. Following Paleozoic time there was an extended period of erosion common to many districts in the southwestern U. S., and there is no present evidence of marine sedimentation at Cananea after the Paleozoic. The eroded surface was eventually covered with a great thickness of extrusive volcanic rocks. The entire series of sediments and volcanic rocks was later intruded by a variety of deep-seated igneous rocks. These included the Cananea granite, the Cuitaca granodiorite, the El Torre syenite, the Tinaja diorite, the Campana diabase and gabbro and the Colorada rhyolite quartz porphyry. Faulting of early age, probably prior to the deposition of the volcanic rocks, may have been responsible for the present position of some of the intrusive rock masses. In the Capote mine on the third and fourth levels the northwest-striking Rick-etts fault zone, with apparent offset of about 800 ft, has been sealed by a dike-like mass of Cananea granite which gradually increases in size with depth. In lower levels of the mine the granite forms a large southeast-plunging mass generally following the course of the Ricketts zone. The granite is not known southeast of the Capote-Oversight mine areas and the Ricketts fault does not appear in the vol-canic~ southeast of Capote Basin, but several plugs of Colorada quartz porphyry cut the volcanics along the assumed general southeast trend of the Ricketts zone. THE most important factors that should be given consideration in valuation of oil land are: (1) the amount of oil the property will produce; (2) the amount of money this oil will bring (based upon the future prices of oil) ; (3) development and production costs; (4) the rate of interest on the investment; (5) the retirement or amortization of invested capital; and (6) the salvage or "scrap" value of the equipment when the property is exhausted. These factors are of varying importance, and some of them may not enter all valuation problems, but most of them should be given consideration in any valuation even though only a rough estimate of the value of the property is desired. The value of a property may be changed over-night by the completion of important test wells, by the sudden water flooding, or by a change in the price of oil. The best a petroleum engineer can give is the value of the property under the conditions existing at the time the appraisal is made with a fair forecast of future action of the wells and of the price of oil. Our experience in the scientific valuation of oil lands is not broad and there is very little published information on the subject; it, therefore, becomes necessary in studying such problems to form comparisons with the factors involved in the valuation of mines-the closest parallel. One of the reasons for the lack of substantial progress in oil-land valuation methods has been the necessity of making an estimate of the future production of the oil property to be valued. Oil men and accountants have not generally conceded that such estimates could be made with any degree of accuracy. It has been shown, however, in several recent publications that with certain data available reasonably close estimates can be made. The accuracy of an appraisal depends chiefly on the accuracy of the estimates of future production and of the future price of oil. The accuracy of the former is sometimes necessarily based on geological inferences. Geology is not an exact science and geological data in connection with oil production cannot always be mathematically evaluated.

TheRe are many factors which control the ultimate production of oil and gas from a producing formation and the rate at which this production is obtained from any of the producing wells in the formation. The most important of these, and the one over which the greatest control can be exercised, is the differential pressure existing between the formation and the well bore. In producing any well by means of the gas-lift, it may be possible to change the flow tubing in a number of ways or vary the volume of circulating gas or air used for flowing the well, but if these operations, regardless of their magnitude, do not change the differential pressure between the producing sand and the well bore, they will in no way change the production of the well. If this statement is accepted as a fact, then all gas-lift or air-lift installations should be designed with but one object in view; namely, a means by which we can economically control very wide ranges of differential pressures between the formation and the well bore. Factors of Production In gas-lift production from any given formation, there are four major factors which govern the magnitude of the differential: (I) the depth of the well; (2) type and size of flow tubing; (3) volume of the circulating air or gas, and (4) physical properties of the oil-gas mixture after it has reached the well. The first of these factors is uncontrollable and does not vary. The other three are controllable within certain limits. The degree to which the last three factors can be controlled will cntircly govern the length of life of the well while on the lift, the lifting cost, and the daily production. It will also govern to some extent the ultimate production from the wells or leases producing by this method. These four factors will be discussed in detail in another part of this paper. Before proceeding further, a review of the present general practice in Texas, elsewhere than in the Gulf Coast region, will be given.

The object of this paper is to describe an application of the crosscut system of mining, as carried on in the Cabezas del Pasto mine, one of the copper-mines in the sooth of Spain. The system is not new; but it is not very generally adopted. It offers, however, decided advantages over other systems more in use; especially where the ore is found in large masses or wide lodes, as it allows the extraction of all the ore without leaving any pillars or roofs. A somewhat detailed description of the various operations and costs of working may not only be interesting, but may possibly lead to a more general adoption of this method in cases where at present the pillar-andstall system is preferred. The principal features of the copper-lodes in the south of Spain and Portugal are the following: They are nearly all lenticular masses of great lateral dimensions and unascertained depth; their direction is approximately east-west, and their dip towards north. Some are contact-lodes, having slate on the hanging-wall and porphyry on the foot-wall; others are imbedded in porphyry, and others again are imbedded in clay-slate. The upper portion of these lodes consists of " gossan," a siliceous peroxide of iron, mixed with more or less clay. The depth to which the gossan goes down varies in different localities, from 40 feet to 120 feet, and more. Below the gossan is found the iron pyrites, with about 2 to 3 per cent of copper. The gossan is generally admitted to be the result of the decomposition of the pyrites, the copper rendered soluble, filtering into the underlying layers of undecomposed ore, and enriching the ore below the gossan above the general average. Very rich pockets and streaks of ore, containing sometimes 10 per cent of copper and more, are often found in the upper portions of the lodes. The copper contained in the ore is generally in the shape of gray and black sulphides and copper pyrites; rich pockets often show chalcopyrite and fahlerz. In nearly

INTRODUCTION One may have heard about how various projects were financed or certain companies were successful in obtaining a bank loan, but there are many more projects and companies who fail to get the money they need. At least a portion of these failures, and a large percentage of the frustrations connected with even the successful financings, are a result of not understanding the process of obtaining money. Recent years have seen a proliferation of debt financing sources available to finance minerals operations (see the next Chapter 11), but these represent only a minor portion of the minerals financing market. The fundamental source of borrowed money to many minerals related companies remains the banks. Therefore, understanding the "Loan Approval Process" can easily mean the difference between getting the money or not. LOAN APPROVAL PROCESS The initial stages of the loan approval process should begin long before the bankers, and the organizations they represent, enter upon the scene. The loan approval can be broken down into six stages: 1) Generation 2) Preparation 3) Presentation 4) Evaluation 5) Approval 6) Documentation As you can see in Figure 1, the bank is only directly involved in the second half of the process. The perils in obtaining financing for the smaller minerals venture are primarily in the first three stages, not the last three. The minerals venture making application for a loan can, in almost every case, improve its chances of success by carefully planning and preparing itself and the information that will be required of it in the loan approval process. Generation This first step in the process is deciding on the need for a loan. (Earlier papers in this Book and in Chapter 11 provide some guidance.) It is surprising how many ventures confuse the need for money with the need for a loan. Suffice to say that the equity investor risks both the timing of the yield on his capital and, ultimately, his capital. From less than one million tons in 1923, the strip-mine production has gradually increased to a high of 11,725,870 tons in 1937. From a negligible amount prior to 1927, the amount of coal mechanically loaded underground had increased to a high of 28,374,362 tons in 1937. The amount manually loaded in 1937 reached a low of 12,332,023 tons. In this same year, this state ranked first in strip-mine production, also in mechanically loaded production. For this reason a study of the influence of mechanization on location of production in Illinois may be helpful in anticipating what may happen in other producing states. The reason for the changes in methods lies in the differences in costs of production. The Bureau of Research and Statistics of the National Bituminous Coal Commission has made public the following costs of production by various methods in the state of Illinois (district 10) for the last nine months of 1937: all mines, $1.7602 per ton; strip mines, $1.4319; mechanical loading mines, $1.7457; hand loading mines, $2.1793; all underground mines, $1.8703. These are weighted averages for the entire district. Inasmuch as production in 1937 was reported from 58 counties scattered over two-thirds of the area of the state and from five different seams varying in thickness from less than 3 ft. to as much as 12 ft., it is apparent that the location of production must be influenced by the extent of mechanization possible in the various producing counties. SHIFT in Production The term "mechanization" is commonly used to designate the coal-loading operation. However, in a broader sense it embraces the use of any and all mechanical and electrical equipment on the surface and underground. Strip mining is an intensive form of mechanization. Western Australia is the home of much that is new and interesting in the gold-mining industry. Some of the gold deposits are outranked for size and value by nothing yet discorered, while the value of the ores is, in many cases, rivaled only by their complex character. As in all parts of the world, many of the ore-bodies occur in ways which tax the skill of the miner in following them; and among these the writer considers the case of the East Murchison United more interesting than the average. This is one of the leading gold-mines of the colony in point of production, and is situated near the town of Lawlers, in the East Murchison district. The country for several miles around the mine is mainly granite, and the line of outcrop on which this mine is located can be traced for a long distance. As will be seen from the accompanying plan (Fig. I), there are, at the water-level, two nearly parallel veins running slightly north of west. Structural Features.—The most striking peculiarity of these veins, and the hardest to understand, is their tendency to send out horizontal stringers or side-veins. These vary in size from a veinlet an inch thick to a veil] several feet in width, and they extend with great persistence into the wall-rock on either side of the vein. This tendency is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The usual signs of a movement of the wall-rocks, such as a ribbon-structure of the quartz and a well-defined gouge or seam of clay along the walls, are in many places lacking, while in other places they appear strongly marked. They seem more in evidence below water-level than above. It is a commonlly accepted idea that when a gold-bearing vein loses in width, it often gains in value. In this instance, however, the direct opposite is the case; for in many stopes it has been possible to leave the narrow portions of the vein to act as pillars, and to extract only the wide portions, which are

The technical papers of the last few years give numerous in stances of serious failures by cracking or rupture of soft steel boiler plates, marly of which have satisfactorily passed the rigid inspection and tests required by both Lloyds' Register and the Board of Trade in England. I speak of the inspecting department of Lloyds' and the Board of Trade, for we do not begin to have as systematic and intelligent work regularly done in this country as is done by these institutions in England. Tension-tests of this steel have given from 65,000 to 65,000 pounds per square inch tensile strength, with from 20 to 30 per cent. elongation in 8 inches. Chemical analyses have shown the steel to contain from 0.12 to 0.15 per cent. carbon, from 0.25 to 0.40 per cent. manganese, and from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. phosphorus. All of these tests are considered normal, and, in the words of one of our members, " boiler-plates with these qualities ought not to fail." There are, however, several causes of failure in soft steel plates which, although the writer does not presume to ascribe to then], or either of them, any particular instance, are still dangerous, and ought to be guarded against much more carefully than in usual present practice. These causes are: 1. The hardening property of all steel. 2. Insufficient work from the ingot to the finished plates. 3. Temporary fiber in certain steels. 4. Internal strains caused by unequal work upon the material. Hardening.-The writer, in a paper read before the Institute in October, 1883," made the statement that soft .steel, no matter how low in carbon, would harden to a certain extent upon being heated red-hot and plunged into water, and that it hardened more when plunged into brine and less when quenched in oil, and gave the results of one experiment, merely as an illustration of many which had all confirmed the statement made. The illustration was a heat of open-hearth steel made by the . writer, of 0.15 per cent. carbon and 0.29 per cent. of manganese, which gave (he following results upon test-pieces from the same 1/4-thick plate.

CERTAIN features of the response of copper and brass to deformation and recrystallization remain obscure. The textures obtained on rolled sheet are listed by Schmid and Boas1 as: No adequate explanation has been advanced for the presence of the secondary deformation texture of copper and its absence in brass or for the origin of the cubic recrystallization texture of copper.2 A recent publication3 attempted to rationalize the above empirically described annealing texture of brass on the basis of retention of the (110) [112] rolling orientation plus twinning about the central octahedral poles of the usual secondary (110) [115] orientation. The difference in the textures of annealed copper as compared to 70-30 brass is also shown by the difference in the position of ears for drawn copper, at o° and 90°, as compared with drawn brasses, at 45°, for all compositions between 90-10 and 70-30.4 Data on individual crystals are as yet too few to permit of an analysis of these textures comparable to that of mild steel as made by Barrett and Levenson.5 EXPERITMENTAL METHODS The materials studied included copper specimens cut from the central, equiaxed crystal portion of a tough-pitch wirebar; brass made from this copper and high-purity (99.99 per cent) zinc including alloys of 7 per. cent, 15 per cent, 24 per cent, 29 per cent and 36 per cent Zn and large single crystals of 70-30 brass. Sections ¼ in. thick of the cast polycrystalline copper and brasses were reduced 40 per cent by rolling, recrystallized to a common grain size of 0.045 mm. and then rolled directly to foil 0.002 in. thick. Hardness readings employing both the Vickers and Rockwell machines were taken at intervals during the reduction. For comparison, similar specimens were cross-rolled-i.e., turned through 90 for each pass-and comparable hardness data were secured. Finally sections from the single crystals of brass were cut to obtain the following initial orientations; these sections were rolled, hardness data secured and a complete micrographic record of structural changes obtained:

The most important factors that should be given consideration in the valuation of oil lands are: (1) the amount of oil the property will produce; (2) the amount of money this oil will bring (based upon the future prices of oil); (3) development and production costs; (4) the rate of interest on the investment; (5) the retirement or amortization of invested capital; and (6) the salvage or "scrap" value of the equipment when the property is exhausted. These factors are of varying importance and some of them may not enter all valuation problems, but most of them should be given consideration in any valuation even though only a rough estimate of the value of the property is desired. The value of a property may be changed over night by the completion of important test wells, by the sudden water flooding, or by a change in the price of oil. The best a petroleum engineer can give is the value of the property under the conditions existing at the time the appraisal is made with a fair forecast of future action of the wells and of the price of oil. Our experience in the scientific valuation of oil lands is not broad and there is very little published information on the subject; it, therefore, becomes necessary in studying such problems to form comparisons with the factors involved in the valuation of mines—the closest parallel. One of the reasons for the lack of substantial progress in oil-land valuation methods has been the necessity of making an estimate of the future production of the oil property to be valued. Oil men and accountants have not generally conceded that such estimates could be made with any degree of accuracy. It has been shown, however, in several recent publications that with certain data available reasonably close estimates can be made. The accuracy of an appraisal depends chiefly on the accuracy of the estimates of future production and of the future price of oil. The accuracy of the former is sometimes necessarily based on geological inferences. Geology is not an exact science and geological data in connection with oil production cannot always be mathematically evaluated.

VALUES for the equilibrium distribution coefficient, ko, are required for solidification studies. The procedure generally adopted1-3 is to progressively solidify alloy rods over a range of growth rates, under conditions where a high degree of convective mixing is present in the melt. The measured effective distribution coefficients are plotted as a function of growth rate, and the extrapolated value at zero growth rate is taken to be the equilibrium ko. The method is limited by the experimental difficulty in obtaining steady growth rates less than approximately 10-4 cm per sec. Extrapolation from rates greater than this can lead to inaccuracy. In the present investigation, an alternative method for determining ko, previously used by the authors for the Ag-Sn system,' was applied to alloy of thallium in tin. Specimens were grown under conditions where convective mixing was absent, and experimental concentration-distance curves in the region of the initial transient were compared with curves calculated for trial values of ko. The ko which gave the best fit was taken as the correct value. To obtain the calculated curves, a value for the diffusion constant in the liquid near to the melting point was needed. This was determined by the capillary-reservoir method. Diffusion Constants. Details of the experimental procedure used by the authors in the capillary-reservoir technique have been described in previous papers,5'6 the only variation being in the use of Tl204, a ß emitter, as tracer, in contrast to previous work where ? emitters were used. The activity of a ß-emitting sample, as measured in a Geiger counter, is proportional to the surface area. To measure the concentration of thallium along the capillary after diffusion had taken place, the solidified capillary (1 mm diam) was cut into 2.5-mm lengths and each length compressed between parallel steel plates to form a disc approximately 5 mm in diam. The discs were placed in a flat-bottomed dish, covered by a thin lead shield with a central aperture, and counted in a 0 counter with fixed geometry. IN this paper, the results of an investigation concerning the diffusion of three elements, magnesium, silicon, and molybdenum, in nickel are presented. The work represents a continuation of a diffusion program relating to solute diffusion in nickel. The program has the dual aim of obtaining useful diffusion data and of yielding insight into the factors governing solute diffusion in close-packed metals. The first paper of this series has been published earlier? In both investigations, in agreement with recent results from other laboratories, the activation energies for solute diffusion were found to be close but not identical to that of self-diffusion in the pure solvent in question. In order to obtain valid diffusion data, certain experimental pitfalls recognized only in recent years had to be avoided. Chief among these were the necessity for minimizing short-circuiting diffusion paths such as grain boundaries and the necessity for using low solute concentration gradients. In this series of investigations the following precautions were taken in an attempt to minimize such errors. 1) Samples with large grain sizes, 0.5 to 10 mm, were prepared. 2) The diffusion coefficients were measured at relatively high temperatures, since imperfections such as dislocations play a less important role at such temperatures than at lower temperatures. 3) Alloys containing less than 1 atomic pct were chosen for study. Experimental Work Materials—A diffusion couple technique was employed in the experimental investigation. Briefly, this technique consisted of the following. A diffusion couple was fabricated by placing a flat face of a cylindrically shaped alloy disk against a similar face of a pure nickel disk, and a bond was formed at an intermediate temperature under pressure. The diffusion couple thus fabricated was subjected to a diffusion anneal at higher temperatures for a measured period of time and then sectioned perpendicular to the direction of diffusion. After analyzing the sections for solute concentration the diffusion coefficient was determined from a probability, plot of concentration vs distance from the diffusion interface. DURING recent years, there has been a material increase in the use of ferrophosphorus in the steel industry. It has been observed, when rolling sheets, that those made of Southern iron did not have to be rolled at as high a temperature as the others and, consequently, did not stick together. The reason was found to be the phosphorus content of Southern iron. It was therefore thought that an addition of phosphorus to sheet steel of other than Southern origin would give the same result as the use of Southern iron. At first, this addition was made by intro¬ducing phosphate rock in the blast furnace and reducing it together with the iron ore; but, because of the necessity for only small quantities of this grade of iron, the process was not satisfactory. The manufacture of ferrophosphorus was then introduced, so that additions might be made to the open-hearth furnace or ladle. Ferrophosphorus was first manufactured in the blast furnace. This method, however, can only economically produce a grade of product up to about 20 per cent. To produce a higher grade, it would be necessary to charge a larger proportion of phosphate-bearing material; and as the rate of absorption by the iron is low, there would be an increased loss of phosphorus oxides. This feature makes the production of a higher grade ferrophosphorus in the blast furnace uneconomical. The use of high-grade ferrophosphorus in the steel requires a smaller addition and involves, besides the economies in handling, an additional economy in transportation. The alloy with a higher percentage than 20 per cent. can be made only in the electric furnace. In the ordinary operation of the electric furnace in the production of ferrophosphorus, an alloy may be produced containing 26 per cent. phosphorus; this is the limit, for it does not seem possible to produce a higher phosphorus alloy even if large excesses of phosphatic materials are used. The reasons for the difficulty in raising this percentage of phosphorus are not known. Although many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other intercsted parties to give out their "inside information " Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County, at this time. Locality and Description The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. LouisSan Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 21/2 hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75' west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south 45" east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parall el syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin south of the Cement anticfine. The positjon of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of-Cement, has not been discovered. TOPOGKAFHY In the southwest part of the state, nearly all maps of Oklahoma show two mountain areas—Arbuckle and Wichita—which are conspicuous geological and topographic landmarks. In addition, some maps show a third, and smaller, range, named the Keechi Hills, in the vicinity of Cement. These hills also form a conspicuous feature in the landscape; but for some reason they have been neglected by geologists, and the
