Deep-sea manganese nodules are considered to be potential ores of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Considerable time, effort, and funds have been applied to the study of the distribution of nodules on the seafloor and the location of economically important areas, but less effort has been spent in understanding the origin of nodules. Most theories that have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules have been based on inorganic processes. It is not by coincidence, however, that the area considered to be most economically feasible is, in the zone of high biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and underlain by siliceous biogenic sediment. The genesis of manganese nodules and the concentration of many trace elements are related indirectly, and possibly directly, to the activities of organisms.

IN NOVEMBER 1933 I had the pleasure of receiving an autographed copy of a small brochure entitled "Birth of the Porphyry Coppers." The author, James Colquhoun, a distinguished British mining engineer, had been the dominant figure in the Arizona Copper Company, Limited, which, until its acquisition by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1921, had been the principal producer of copper in the Morenci district. In addition to the highly productive Humboldt and Longfellow mines it owned the Clay property, which, of course, has now become Arizona's No. 1 copper mine. Except for Utah Copper it is the premier Porphyry copper enterprise in the United States. Mr. Colquhoun's little volume was inspired by THE PORPHYRY COPPERS which had appeared early that year. In a most courteous and friendly way he adduces data to show that "we (Arizona Copper Company Limited) were successfully treating low-grade porphyry ores in quantity for at least four years (1901 to 19W) before the Utah Copper Company did anything at all." This last remark is based on the figures in THE PORPHYRY COPPERS showing that Utah's first production came from the Copperton pilot plant in 1905. Mr. Colquhoun traces the story of Morenci beginning in 1883 when he first arrived there. He tells how the rich self-fluxing ores (containing lime- stone, silica, and iron in proportion to permit direct smelting to produce black copper) were gradually exhausted. High-grade siliceous ore could be mixed in limited quantity with the self-fluxing ores; and oxidized ores were leached to contribute substantially to the production of the district. But

The principle of airborne electroniagnetic prospecting is well-known. 'The basic geonhysicai texts in inost cases discuss the main elements involved in electromagnetic prospecting. However. there is ceriainlv iittle information available to the public concerning he present types of airborne eiectromagnerlc systenis being flown today by both contracting companies and some of the mining companies which have their own instruments. This is unfortunate since it is difficuit for those people not conducting such operations to understand thoroughly the iarge variation in the electromagnetic instrunlents available. Basically, the aeriai electromagnetic induction method utilizes a primary or transmitting coil through which is generated an alternating magnetic field at a frequents: generally of the range of 100 to 2000 cycies per sec. This primary field links with buried conductors and generates eddy currents within them. These eddy currents in themselves generate a secondary magnetic field of the same frequencv, but generally nut-of-phase with respect to the prinlarv field. This secondarv field is detected above the ground in the pick-up or receiver coil which is tuned to the frequency of the current applied to the primary transmitter coil. One of the main problems in the development of an airborne electromagnetic system is that of maintaining constant coupling between the cransmitting and receiving coil systems. Any variations in the coupling due to relative motion between the two coils will result in an in-phase signal being induced in the receiver coil. [However, any variation in the coupling does not result in an out-of-phase signal change in the receiver coil. The first airborne eiectromagnetic svsteins which were developed utilized a large prlniarv coil set up on the aircraft with the receiving coil being towed behind in a bird, generally at the end of a cable of about 500 ft. in length. It is possible with such a system to record the out-of-phase or quadrature responses more readily than the in-phase re-sponse. One system utilizes a dual frequency method, wnereby the out-of-phase responses at two frequencies are recorded. Another system used today records a single-frequency olrt-of-phase response. Recentlv home companies have succeeded in measuring from ne air both the out-of-phase and the in-phase components. The usefulness of recording in-phase is weil-known, but unfortunately this is difficult to obtain in any towed-bird system. In order to measure the true in-phase signal, the most straightforward system is that in which both the transmitter and receiver coils .Ire affixed in space so that there is little or no relarive motion between the two coils. THE FLIGHT SYSTEM The particular system which Canadian Aero Service is using at present is mounted on a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter (Fig. 1). A record of both the in-phase and out-of-phase responses is made at a frequency of 390 cycles per sec. The transmitter coil is set on a boom mounted in the front of the helicopter; the receiver is set on a tail boom extending back from the helicopter. Separation between these coils is about 65 ft. The two coils are mounted in a vertical co-axial relationship. Having the transmitting coil in a vertical plane ensures that maximurn coupling will occur with vertical conductors rather than flat-lying conductors. Having them mounted as they are in a co-axial relationship on the helicopter ensures that maximum response will occur when the flight direction is orthogonal to the strike direction of a given conductor. Several of the commonly used methods for deter-mination of effective grain densities of minerals have been evaluated for accuracy and precision, and their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals tested. Consideration was given to the effect of consolidation, swelling clay, and wettability on these grain-density determinations. Procedures with helium displacement, a modified low-pressure Boyle's law porosimeter, and liquid displacement (water, n-decane, and n-octanol) were tested. The helium-displacement procedure was used primarily as an independent reference for which the effects of fluid-solid interaction, e.g., adsorption and wettability, were negligible. The procedures with the Boyle's law porosimeter and with liquid displacement are the methods in common use. Minerals investigated included calcite, West Texas limestone core samples, California sandstone core samples, and Wyoming bentonite. The number of samples tested, while not large, was adequate to permit application of statistical methods. Grain-density measurements on calcite (Iceland spar) provided a basis of comparison for the accuracy and precision of the procedures under investigation for a material with a high degree of chemical and physical homogeneity and for which fluid-solid interactions were at a minimum. Liquid-displacement procedures (water or n-decane) provided the greatest reliability and precision for measurement of the grain densities of the limestone tested. Gas-displacement procedures (helium or Boyle's law porosimeter) provided the greatest reliability and experimental convenience, if not the greatest precision, for the measurement of the grain densities of the swell- ing clay, Wyoming bentonite, and the shah sandstones which -contained appreciable amounts of swelling, in-terstitial clays. These experiments were designed to evaluate the applicability of the grain-density procedures in common we to some of the less tractable minerals—tight limestones, shaly sandstones, and swelling clays. The results should provide a useful basis for a selection of the method most suitable for application to the various petroleum reservoir minerals encountered and especially for use in the estimation of formation porosity. INTRODUCTION These experiments were undertaken to evaluate the accuracy and precision of several commonly used methods for determination of effective grain densities of minerals, and to test their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals. Consideration was also given to the effect of consolidation, clay, and wettability on these grain-density determinations. Procedures used included measurements with helium displacement, with a modified low-pressure Boyle's law porosimeter, and with liquid displacement (water, n-decane, and n-octanol). The minerals investigated included calcite, West Texas limestone core samples, California sandstone core samples, and Wyoming bentonite. The accurate determination of the porosity of petroleum reservoir formations, in particular those of low porosity, has received much attention. Both bulk-volume and grain-volume measurements necessary in the evaluation of porosity have been examined by many investigators with the objectives of improving both the accuracy and the precision of these determinations. In this investigation statistical criteria for selection of the most reliable and suitable procedure for use with a given type of mineral are demonstrated. The grain-volume measurement procedures appear to be the most susceptible to improvement.

It was not for the purpose of asserting any superior knowledge or authority, but simply of clearing up, in greater detail, some points casually mentioned in Mr. Scott's able paper, that the writer entered, some two years ago, into the discussion which that paper initiated. In such matters there is always room for differences of judgment, as well as for additional data, which may modify or complete the conclusions even of the best authorities. Those who are immersed in the duties of practical administration or work in the field, and who, being remote from the great scientific national libraries, are obliged to rely on their private collections, and to supplement them by their recollections of earlier studies, labor under special disadvantages in such a discussion; and it must be to the scientific and engineering world a matter for gratitude that Mr. Lyman has been willing to give the benefit of his advantages in this respect. Mr. Lyman would, however, doubtless at once disclaim the conclusion that his masterly summary constitutes " the last word " on this subject, and welcome further evidence, comment and criticism, such as the various contributors may continue to offer. This, therefore, is the motive, and must be the excuse, of the introduction by the writer of the following observations. VENTILATION may be defined as the process by which vitiated air of an inclosed or partly inclosed space is continuously replaced by fresh air. Fresh air has been defined as invigorating pure air. It was, however, well known that the untoward effects produced on those exposed to such air was not due to the concentration of the carbon dioxide. It has been found that the untoward effects on the comfort and efficiency of those so exposed are due to the increased temperature and humidity. It has been found that men can breathe air containing many times the amount of carbon dioxide found in our worst ventilated theaters and assembly halls, which, according to Rosenau, do not contain above 0.5 per cent. carbon dioxide.

THE writer has devoted a number of years to practical operations and to the study of geology in the oil fields. In consequence, he has been brought to investigate the theories advanced to account for the accumulation of oil and gas in commercial deposits. It is the result of these investigations and his personal conclusions that he wishes to sum up in this paper. The writer is an advocate of the organic origin of petroleum found in pools. He has been led to believe that the present theories of oil and gas accumulations are incomplete and, in certain respects, incorrect, although they may embody certain elements of truth; that the forces that are called upon to explain the movement are only secondary forces in the process, and insufficient, by themselves, to cause this movement; and that the phenomenon of accumulation is of much larger order than heretofore admitted and bears an intimate relation with the general as well as with the local deformations of the crust and is a direct consequence and a mechanical effect of these deformations to which the term "diastrophic" has been applied. As a complement to this theory, the writer offers a new interpretation of the "rock pressure" and of the mechanism of the "sealing up" of this pressure in oil and gas pools.

THE McIntyre mine is in the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. The rocks are Keewatin lavas intruded by quartz porphyries and albitite dikes of Algoman age. Gold-bearing quartz veins are found in the Keewatin rocks near the porphyry stocks. The whole area has been highly compressed by forces acting along a N. 20°W. line. These forces folded the Keewatin rocks before the intrusion of the Algoman rocks, and later schisted both the Keewatin and Algoman rocks. Vein fractures were developed after the folding but before the development of the schist by the compres-sive forces being locally broken up into couples. These couples were set up by the differential resistance to deformation of porphyries and basalts, and also by the competency of the dacites and incompetency of the tuffs and fragmental rocks. During the important period of vein formation, two zones were developed-an inner productive zone in which the quartz veins are ankerite-bearing and an outer barren zone in which the quartz veins are calcite-bearing. The vein solutions originated in the same magma that supplied the albitite dikes.

The effects of percent solids, mill loading, and grinding time on product size distribution and ball wear were studied in a laboratory ball mill for a taconite ore. Mild steel balls and HCLA steel balls were used to examine the role that ball hardness play in grinding. Net production of - 44-µm (- 325-mesh) material reached maximum at 70% solids, whereas the ball wear decreased as pulp density increased. HCLA steel balls ground the taconite ore finer than mild steel balls under otherwise identical conditions. Examination of ball surfaces with a scanning electron microscope suggested that corrosive wear was mini- mal under nitrogen flushing conditions, and that grinding with mild steel balls involved nipping rather than attrition, whereas grinding with harder HCLA balls involved both nipping and attrition. Pulp viscosity controlled the thickness of pulp layer on balls, thereby affecting grinding efficiency and ball wear.

Tillson commented that while the fundamentals are well presented it would have been of interest to him to have had the author add some of his own experiences with fan installations. A. W. Hesse remarked concerning the use of the forward curved blade fan on the surface at a metal mine which has, ordinarily, but few airways, that the farther they are driven, the higher the resistance rises, and less air will be delivered, as the water gage will remain constant with a consequent loss in quantity. D. Harrington added that the metal mines do not or¬dinarily install fans until the mine is well developed, so changes are relatively slower after fan installation than at a coal mine.

A noted ordnance engineer once said to a friend, in speaking of the production of great steel guns, " How is it ? We design our guns with a factor of safety of eight, and the guns burst." The vague way in which internal stresses and strains in iron and steel are often considered and spoken of makes it worth while to examine them, as to their nature, their causes and results, how they may, for useful purposes, be advantageously dealt with, and how, when detrimental or dangerous, they may be reduced or kept within harmless proportions. Rankine defines " strain " as a change of form or dimensions of a solid or liquid mass produced by a stress. This definition seems intended not to cover strains due to internal stresses, and it will help us in the present inquiry to consider strain as a tendency to change as well as an actual change of form. Internal strains in iron and steel are the result of stresses within the mass of the piece, some parts pulling and others pushing in resistance to them; or, in other words, some parts are in tension and some in compression, each part striving to relieve itself from strain and make the piece assume a form in which all parts are at rest. Subdivision, so that each part could relieve its strain by motion relative to the other parts, would, if carried out far enough, practically obliterate strain. The internal strains we are now to consider are not those due to the stresses of the service which the piece is rendering, either alone or as a part of a structure, which may be termed service-strains, but those which originate or at least are contained in the piece itself. This paper gives the results of experiments conducted in the metallurgical laboratory of the Ohio State University with the objects of determining: First, the calorific powers of a number of coals in general use in Ohio; and second, how far ordinary analytical methods could be used as a basis for computing these values. Incidentally a test of the performance of the calorimeter was involved. The chemical work has been carried on in the department for some time, so that the whole investigation has extended over three or four years. The Mahler calorimeter was purchased from L. Golaz in Paris, and is practically identical with the one described and figured by Mahler in his monograph "Contribution a l'Etude des Combustibles," from the Bulletin de la Société d' Encouragement pour l'lndustrie Nationale. A figure and description is also given by William Kent in The Mineral Industry for 1892, page 97. There were furnished with the instrument three thermometers covering a range of from 7°.5 C. to 31° C. Thermometer "A" (17°.5 to 31°) was carefully calibrated by reading the ends of a thread of mercury in sixteen positions covering the whole scale, supplementing this by readings of longer threads and deducing the errors of scale by the method published by Prof. Holman in the Technology Quarterly of September, 1887. The maximum error of a single reading was found to be 0°.0042 C. Thermometer "B" (13° to 25°) was compared directly with " A " over the scale common to both, and a variation was found of 0°.0145 C. for 7°.5 (or 0°.002 for l°) of the scale. Thermometer " C" ('7°.5 to 19°.0) was omitted from the cornparison, as it was rarely used, being only required where measurements were made at low temperatures. From the

The Bradford field of northwestern Pennsylvania and adjacent portions of New York state has attracted world-wide attention in recent years on account of the remarkable success that has been attained in the application of water-flooding as a means of increasing the extraction of oil from a pool that had almost reached the economic limit by ordinary production methods. It is one of the few large oil fields in which artificially conducted water drives have thus far proved successful, although many attempts have been made to apply them elsewhere. As detailed a knowledge as possible of the character of the producing sand in this field is therefore of considerable interest, not only from a scientific but also from a practical standpoint. Outside the Bradford field, such knowledge should aid operators in determining whether or not their sands are amenable to flooding. In the Bradford field itself flooding operations are not uniformly successful over the approximately 85,000 acres of productive area, due in many instances primarily to variations in sand conditions. A knowledge of just what these variations are would often be a great aid in overcoming the difficulties, or else would save considerable sums of money which might otherwise be wasted in experimenting in areas where the chances of success are very small. Realizing that more precise information in regard to the nature of the reservoir rock was essential to improvements in the methods of oil recovery, the Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Assn., by private subscription of its members, took a core of the Bradford sand from a well 1/2 mile west of Custer City, Pa., during the spring of 1925. The Forest Oil Co. also took a core of the same sand from a well about 8 miles east of Bradford at that time. The cores were submitted to the United States Geological Survey for study and A. F. Melcherl has published the results of porosity determinations on the Custer City core.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) THIS paper is an abstract and a discussion of results obtained by the United States Test Board in experiments upon 14 brands of wrought iron, most of which are well known and of high repute.* The iron was all intended for chain-cables; it was tested in the form of bars, usually of nine sizes, from 1 inch to 2 inches round, and also in the forms of single links and short chains. Not less-than 2000 tensile tests were made, each showing elastic limit, elongation, and reduction of area. This work was done with conspicuous intelligence and fidelity, at the Washington Navy Yard, by Commander L. A. Beardslee. Some important practical results and principles which he has developed, and others which he has confirmed, will be referred to. The chemical part of this work consists of 42 complete analyses (including slag), by Mr. Blair, chemist to the Board. EFFECTS OF COMPOSITION ON STRENGTH. Variations in the physical qualities of iron may he due to different composition, or to different treatment in manufacture, or to both these complex causes. In order to determine the specific causes of variation, one class of altering conditions should be made to vary largely, while the other classes should be kept uniform. Then another class should be varied, and so on, until the value of each is ascertained. As all the irons under consideration were intended to have that purity and refinement which was deemed indispensable in chain-cables, their chemical analyses are perhaps more important in proving that physical variations result chiefly from treatment, than in pointing out the specific effects of certain ingredients. While the subject of treatment-especially the increase of strength by greater reduction in rolling-may be the more important one, it can be best appreciated after we have familiarized ourselves with the gen¬eral chemical and physical characters of the irons. The typical facts are given in the following tables. * As the present object of the Board is not to compare the products of different makers, but to discover the physical effects of various composition and treatment, the irons are designated by letters rather than by their trade names.

Size distribution and surface area measurements play an important role in the characterization of crushed and ground granular materials properties. This paper outlines sampling methods of granular materials followed by a detailed treatment of principles of size and surface area measurements of a wide range of sizes from crushers feed to ball-mill ground sub-micron particles. Currently available equipment for size distribution and surface area analysis is described and critically examined with respect to advantages, range of application and precautions in their use. Equipment for on- stream size analysis is also evaluated. Finally, a list of criteria are given for selection of particles size and surface area measuring devices for a particular application.
