The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and. low reagent cost. WHEN Duval Sulphur and Potash Co. recently entered the established potash industry, the vast amount of pioneer work essential in an entirely new endeavor was unnecessary. Thus it was possible to screen and assemble proved techniques into a highly efficient process based on the combined knowledge of the industry. It is hoped that the refinements Duval has added to these cumulative achievements will contribute to the rapid advance of the potash industry and related enterprises. The process selected utilizes as raw material syl-vinite ore typical of the Permian Basin. This ore is principally comprised of interlocked crystals of potassium chloride, about 40 pct, and sodium chloride. Also there is as much as 1 1/2 pct of dispersed clay slime which, because of its nature, highly complicates beneficiation of these ores. The refining method is basically flotation in which the mineral sylvite is floated away from the halite-clay gangue to produce a 60 pct K,O muriate of potash product for the plant-food trade. Pebble milling has been practiced in the reduction works of South Africa gold mines for well over 50 years. Originally flint pebbles were imported from Denmark to grind stamp-mill amalgamation- process tailing, which contained a good deal of extractable gold, but local operators soon found that large pieces of ore could be used for the same purpose. The ore is a hard, tough conglomerate in which quartz pebbles are cemented together by a matrix of redeposited silica interspersed with pyrite crystals. The gold, rarely visible, occurs as fine particles mostly segregated at the interface of the pebble and matrix, although a small fraction occurs within the pyrite crystals. There is seldom any gold in the pebbles themselves.

A new method for drilling the earth's formations has undergone extensive laboratory and shallow earth drilling experimentation. This method, pellet impact drilling, uses the energy of a large mass of high velocity steel spheres to break and crush the rock. Pellets are confined to a region close to the hole bottom. Motive fluid for transporting and recycling the pellets is supplied by a modified jet pump. The pellet drilling method has inherent advantages over conventional rotary drilling. First, only a nominal amount of weight need be applied to the hole bottom. Second, only a very small amount of torque is required for bit rotation. Third, means are available for continual replacement of the cutter medium. The experimental laboratory work and analytical procedures necessary for the design of a pellet drill bit are described. In the laboratory program approximately half the effort was devoted to the development of a better understanding of the physical process, and half to the empirical testing of new bit configurations. Factors such as pellet size and velocity, jet pump characteristics and modifications, and power distribution are discussed. The design and construction of a pellet impact bit for drilling a 9 in. hole with 1 1/4 in. steel pellets are described. Drilling performance in representative rocks, hydraulic operating characteristics, and metallurgical problems are discussed. INTRODUCTION This paper discusses an attempt to reduce drilling costs through the development of a drilling method basically different from rotary drilling. Publications on drilling research indicate that the major effort on the part of manufacturers and operators has been confined to research in rotary, or rotary-percussion drilling. This applied drilling research has produced significant gains in drilling rates and bit life, but thus far it has failed to achieve any major decrease in general drilling costs. From recent statistics released by Drilling Contractors, it can be shown that the total cost of drilling an "average" well in 1953 was about 2 1/4 times the corresponding cost in 1935. Analysis of the costs will show that they are not due to inefficient field operations; they are due instead to both an inflated economy and greater "average" well depths. Diligent work by the industry has reduced the backlog of potential economic improvements in rotary drilling to a group of rather marginal prospects. Increasing depths and poorer quality reservoirs at these depths continue to make the drilling cost problem more acute. Hence, the aim of the work reported here was to develop a new drilling method not limited by the inherent characteristics of rotary drilling and thus capable of attaining further significant reductions in drilling costs. The effort devoted to research on this proposed new drilling method was of considerable magnitude and represented .in excess of 37 man-years of research. The affiliates of Standard Oil Co. (N. The fact that iron expands when heated, until fusion takes place, and that molten iron is consequently less dense than solid iron of the same grade, is now universally admitted. It was proved by the extensive experiments of Mr. Thomas Wrightson, reported in the Jownal of the Iron and Steel Institute (1890, No. 1, p. 72, and 1891, No. 1, pp. 75, log), and, in a manner, is illustrated in heavy founding by the shrinkage 'of the molten metal, which must be " fed " in order to obtain solid castings. This decrease in volume requiring " feeding" while the metal is still liquid I call " shrinkage," applying the term " contraction" to the decrease in volume which takes place after solidification, while the iron is cooling to atmospheric temperature. The light-work founder, not having the opportunity to make heavy castings, in which shrinkage can be observed, is apt to confound the two; but they are in fact distinct, and are separated by an act of expanion, which takes place at the moment of solidification. The fact of this expansion was first practically demonstrated by Mr. John R. Whitney, of Philadelphia, Pa., whose experiments are recorded in the National Car and Locomotive Builder of May, 1889. Experiments recently made by the writer indicate that there is a constant relation between this expansion and the preceding shrinkage and forcibly demonstrate the necessity of " feeding " a casting to make its interior solid. This is a matter with which all makers and users of castings have experienced difficulty. The founder being heretofore unable to define correctly the principles involving the urgent necessity of " feeding " has failed to impress the moulder with its importance in making sound castings.

When a flowing oil well is being drilled in with cable tools, it is difficult to determine when an additional streak of pay sand is drilled. By placing a gas meter on the gas-release line from the oil and gas separator, any increase in volume of gas that comes with oil production is recorded. In addition to the better knowledge of sand conditions, these data are a valuable aid in determining the size and depth of shots, plugging off water, and estimating ultimate production. The meter also gives a record of operation while the well is drilling in; and if allowed to remain on the well after completion will give information that may lead to a more efficient recovery of the oil from the sand. A VERTICAL cross section of any oil sand will show great variation in porosity and oil content. In some sands, the entire thickness contains oil, the variation being only the degree of porosity or oil content, but more often the pay streaks are distinctly separated by shells or barren streaks. These pay strata vary in number and may be thin or thick. The total thickness of the sand may be several tens of feet while the part containing oil may be only 1 or 2 ft. thick. The amount of production is not proportional to the thickness of the sand but rather the thickness of the pay streaks. If the total thickness of the sand or the amount that can be drilled is small, or if the initial production is small, the depth at which each stratum of pay is encountered can be determined sufficiently accurately for all present economic purposes. However, when drilling through sand of considerable thickness, giving large initial production, especially where conditions necessitate that the production go through the same gas trap with that from one or more wells already producing, it is difficult to determine the depth at which the pay strata are encountered even accurately enough to guide the placing of shots, and small pay streaks are apt not to be recognized at all.

At the Atlanta meeting of the Institute in October,' 1895, some brief remarks were made by Mr. Wilkens on the above subject. It is the object of this paper to set forth the substance of these previous statements, embodying therewith additional information gained since that time, and a brief illustrated description of the method and means of the separation.* Lack of time will unfortunately not allow as complete a resume of the subject in all its phases, especially those relating to the scientific side of the question, as its novelty and importance would warrant, so that even this paper must be considered a preliminary one. It is hoped that at some future meeting of the Institute we may find an opportunity of presenting supplementary data of interest. The paradoxical title above used requires some explanation. The term " non-magnetic material " is applied to such substances as have heretofore been considered non-magnetic in the arts, more especially in the practice of ore-concentration. Scientifically, it has been shown by Faraday, Plucker, Wiedemann and other physicists that magnetism is an inherent property common to all substances, solid, liquid and gaseous, i.e., all suhstances are either attracted or repelled by the poles of a magnet, although ill the great majority of cases the manifestation of this

In the manufacture of rimming steel—which constitutes the bulk of the world's production of mild steel—the factors that determine the quality of the product are very closely associated with the pouring and solidification of the steel in the ingot mold. The behavior of the metal in the mold is, on the one hand, the resultant of the complex processes through which the liquid metal has passed, and, on the other, it is an indication of the probable behavior of the ingot during subsequent rolling and finishing operations. A detailed study of the mechanism of solidification of rimming ingots ought to yield information that will be useful in controlling the structure of the ingot and the quality of the ultimate product. The first step in such a study is to determine the rate at which the solid shell of the ingot forms from the liquid metal in the mold. A knowledge of the rate of solidification will make it possible to correlate observations of rimming action and gas evolution with studies of the structure, porosity, and segregation within the ingot. Thus, if the metal in the mold is observed to fall, let us say one minute after pouring, the portion of the structure associated with this fall will be located in the part of the ingot that is solidifying at that particular moment. The knowledge that the ingot solidifies to a depth of 3/4 in. in the first minute enables us to locate in the ingot the structural features corresponding to the observed fall. Conversely, the blowhole condition associated with a rising or growing ingot will be found in the part of the ingot that is solidifying at the time the phenomenon occurs. The time required for the complete solidification of an ingot has long been a matter of speculation. It is of considerable practical importance in connection with charging and heating in the soaking pits. Too rapid handling of the ingot through heating and rolling processes has been thought to be associated with excessive pipe and other internal defects, so that a further object of this investigation was to attempt to estimate the time required for complete solidification, or the minimum practical time within which the subsequent operations can be performed with the minimum hazard.

GRINDING costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionary, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actually done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding. Introduction Maximization of profit consistent with environmental protection is the principal goal of new applications development for any conventional or in situ mining technique. Efficient evaluation of all the parameters that contribute to mining costs and production hinges on proper design and evaluation of testing programs and data. The program discussed uses several field and laboratory procedures to estimate ore deposit characteristics and optimize lixiviant compositions. Ore characteristics and lixiviant compositions are then used in a long path leaching test (stream tube test). Stream tube test data are analyzed by mathematical models with computer assistance to predict such wellfield rate parameters as target metal production, lixiviant consumption, and restoration. When these predicted rates are combined with market values for target metals, capital expenditures, prices of lixiviant chemicals, and other economic variables (labor costs, power rates, and licensing fees), an assessment of the relative feasibility of various proposed mining plans is possible. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 illustrates this process. [ ] Field and Laboratory Procedures In general terms, the procedures followed in the evaluation of an in situ leaching application aim at accomplishing: •rapid leaching and maximum recovery of the target metal in a marketable form, •low consumption of lixiviant chemicals, •unquestionably satisfactory restoration of the mined aquifer, and •minimization of capital and operating costs for the above through development of an optimum mine plan. Keeping these goals in mind, the following minimum test program is generally recommended. Geology •Estimate of ore reserves and their variability. •Average disequilibrium value for uranium deposits. •Ore thickness, depth to ore, water level, degree of confinement, and consolidation. •Characterization of quality and quantity of other ore deposit constituents (e.g. sulfide minerals, ion exchange parameters). Hydrology •Single well pump and injectivity test. •Downhole vertical permeability test to compare flow rates of barren and mineralized formations. •Groundwater quality as it may affect licensing, hydro metallurgy, and restoration. Hydrometallurgy • Flask or autoclave tests for optimization of lixiviant parameters and determination of specific reaction rate constants. • Flask or autoclave tests for assessing amenability of lixiviant solutions with ore, consumption of lixiviant, stability of metal in solution contacting ore, and environmentally important species mobilized. • A long-path leach test for modeling the behavior of the lixiviant solution flowing through a long mineralized streamline (stream tube testing). •Metal recovery tests from lixiviant solutions (ion exchange, electrowinning, etc.). •Lixiviant regeneration tests. •Environmental restoration tests.

The term a matte " is applied to smelting-products so extremely diverse in composition and physical properties that it appears impossible to devise any generic formula to represent, chemically, the manner in which the varied proportions of the almost unlimited possible constituents combine with each other. Mattes produced in copper-smelting, in distinction from those produced in smelting-operations in which the recovery of cop per is secondary to that of other metals, cover a narrower range in composition. The copper-content of such mattes vary from 20 to 80 per cent., and even this range is much smaller in general practice since it is found advantageous, when possible, to produce mattes with about 50 per cent. of copper in the first operation. Further, it is unusual that arsenic or antimony occurs in copper-ores in sufficient proportions to form arsenides or antimonides in such quantities that they will separate out from the furnace-products, as is common in lead-smelting. Generally, the mattes produced in copper-smelting are composed mainly of copper (usually greater than 35 per cent.), iron and sulphur, the remaining elements being usually in proportions sufficiently small to allow of their treatment as impuritiee, rather than as essential constituents of the mattes. In modern practice of smelting copper-ores in blast-furnaces the tendency is to approach pyritic smelting as nearly as possible, the furnaces being low and the air supplied being largely in excess of that required for complete combustion of the carbonaceous fuel. Hence, the atmosphere of the blast-furnace thus used is usually oxidizing or nearly neutral, and, as a consequence, the reduction of metallic iron that was a necessary evil of former practice is of unusual occurrence in operations where the main object is the recovery of copper. The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. Oil burners, oil furnaces, and methods of installation, have been the subject of many articles, but information concerning oil-burning systems, based upon scientific principles, is still in great demand, especially in the manufacturing districts of our country. Fuel oil, as it is termed (this being the residuum from oil refineries), has for many years been of great service to our manufacturers, and has justified its popularity not only by producing a superior manufactured product, but by turning out approximately 50 per cent. more product than can be made with coa1 fuel under like conditions. To install a system requiring only an oil-storage tank, a small pump, and an oil-supply main with numerous laterals leading to the various burners, furnaces, boilers, etc., is a comparatively simple matter; and, because fuel oil is very volatile, it is not necessary to heat it, even during the winter months in a very cold climate. Furthermore, only a small amount of power is required to atomize fuel oil, this often being done by a positive pressure blower, or by a mechanical burner. An analysis of fuel oil, together with that of various other liquid fuels, is given in Table I.

As the conflict between the mineral industry and preservationists steadily increases, it becomes urgent to determine as precisely as possible the costs of developing vs. not developing our domestic mineral resources so that enlightened mineral policy decisions can be made. A simple discounted cash flow equation is suggested as an approach to assigning a public-interest dollar value to mineral resources. Present value of a piece of land underlain by a mineral resource is taken as equal to the discounted cash flow derived from the resource corrected for present and future surface land values. The equation is effective as a base for mineral aggregate resource planning for metropolitan areas if transportation cost differences are substituted into the cash flow component. Suitably modified, the equation can be fitted readily into an existing computer simulation program for aggregate mineral resource planning in metropolitan areas. However, because of the lack of accurate input, the equation is less effective for other mineral commodities such as base metals and coal. Nevertheless, within a somewhat philosophical context, the equation still has utility and is effective in defining the problem of public interest values for minerals other than mineral aggregates.

Leaching manganese-bearing materials with NaOH to remove caustic-soluble silica has been demonstrated as a method for upgrading manganese. Those materials containing opaline varieties of silica respond most readily. Spent leach liquors are regenerated by treatment with lime to precipitate calcium silicate and to reactivate the NaOH for leaching. ALL of our larger domestic deposits of manganese are very low grade, but estimated tonnages in these deposits are large enough to constitute a potential strategic reserve of manganese for emergency periods, provided these ores can be upgraded sufficiently to meet industrial specifications. Many types of processes have been suggested for upgrading these ores, several have been studied in pilot plants, and a few have attained limited commercial production for special purposes. The hydrometallurgical process to be described below proposes a leaching operation for removing caustic-soluble silica and other gangue minerals and consequently upgrading a manganese ore or flotation concentrate to a commercially acceptable moduct. It is known that some forms of silica and some silicate minerals are soluble in NaOH solutions under suitable conditions. This new process proposes to use NaOH for removing the soluble materials from manganese ores or concentrates and, as a result, upgrade the manganese content. Since spent leach liquors are not efficient leaching agents the liquor must be treated with lime to precipitate calcium silicate and reactivate the NaOH. Experimental Procedure Manganese-ore samples ground to —35 mesh were leached in iron containers into which the ore sample and appropriate NaOH solutions were placed. Flotation concentrates were already ground to —200 mesh. The slurries were then placed on a hot plate or into a pressure digester and stirred continuously during the period of digestion. Where the- digestion was performed at atmospheric pressures, water lost by evaporation was replaced at regular intervals to maintain approximately a constant volume of slurry. In the pressure digester, volume changes were not controlled. After digestion, the slurry was allowed to cool enough for easy handling, but it was filtered hot, 50" to 70°C, on a Buechner filter. Filtration under these conditions was satisfactory. The resulting filter cake was washed and dried. In most instances, a single leach would not produce maximum extraction of silica from the ore sample; consequently, the dried tailing was treated again in the same manner with a fresh solution of NaOH to obtain an additional extraction of silica. This procedure was repeated a number of times to get the maximum extraction of silica. Usually three or at most four stages of leaching were adequate for this purpose. This leaching procedure was used for obtaining the data reported in this paper on the effects of NaOH concentration, pulp dilution, temperature, and time of digestion on the efficiency of extraction of silica from the ore sample. The experimental procedure does not match industrial methods. consequently tests for counter-current leaching were set up. Data from these tests are not yet complete, but in a qualitative way they indicate that thickeners between stages of leaching will be satisfactory and that the quantity of silica in a leach liquor moving forward to a new solid has only a minor effect on the quantity of silica extracted from the new solid. A pilot plant is now being designed for operation in the near future to test and evaluate the merits of this process.

MUCH the same story can be told about the copper industry for the year 1944 as for the three preceding years. Operators report few or no technical changes at their plants and the main endeavor has been to maintain high production with existing equipment. No large new installations have been made to increase plant capacities and apparently over-all copper production has passed its maximum. The present decline in copper production results partly from the severe labor shortage. As is true of most industries; the outstanding fact about the copper industry during the past few years has been its tremendous and sustained production which has been maintained in spite of serious shortages in material. labor, and technical personnel. The figures in Table I give a concrete example of how production has been increased at one large smelter in the United States-the Garfield plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. at Garfield. The Ardlethan Tin Ltd. concentrator typically recovers 55% of the tin in a gravity concentrate at 51% grade from fresh ore assaying 0.5% Sn. Coarse gravity concentration is performed in a complex circuit involving Reichert cones, spirals, shaking tables and two regrind mills. The paper describes how flow and size-by-size sample data from a steady-state survey were used to construct a computer model of the plant involving 46 process streams. The data reduction involved a computer- aided mass balancing technique, recovery-size modelling of gravity concentrators and the use of a mineral dressing flowsheet simulator. The model was used to simulate possible rearrangements of the available equipment. Early simulations indicated that improved performance could be obtained by using spirals to-treat cone middlings or tailings rather than cone concentrates. A test spiral rig was used at Ardlethan to determine typical performances for all cone product streams and the results were incorporated in new simulations. A revised circuit was recommended and implemented by Ardlethan Tin as far as physical restraints within the plant would allow. Production figures show that a substantial increase in tin recovery and 10-15% increase in milling rate were achieved following the circuit changes, and these improvements were sustained over a six month period.

In order to obtain data on the thermal effect of the blast-furnace jacket and on the water consumption in these jackets a series of tests were run on the 56 by 180 in. blast furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Great Falls, Mont. The arrangement of the jacket is shown in the transverse section of one of the furnaces (Fig. 1) on which the tests were made. The nose, spout, and breast jackets have independent water supplies and discharges. The end and side jackets are connected in pairs, as regards water supply, the feed water entering at the bottom of the lower jacket and overflowing into the bottom of the jacket immediately above it, and discharging into an independent overflow pipe for each pair of jackets. Tests were run on the main side and end jackets, the breast jacket, the spout, and the nose. Measurements were taken of the quantity of water discharged, per minute and the rise in temperature of the water in its passage through the jacket. The product of these two results, expressed in the proper units, evidently gives the number of units of heat removed per minute by the water. Sufficient work was done on each type of jacket to determine its behavior under different conditions, and the results from each set of conditions were checked by repeating the work from three to six times. FIFTY-three alloys have been examined in the Fe-W and Co-W alloy systems in an attempt to verify the finding of o phases in these systems as reported by Goldschmidt.' The alloys were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. The 10-g specimens were made by powder metallurgy techniques. Very fine, high-purity powders were compressed in a double-acting die at 120,000 psi after hydrogen reduction. All compacts were then sintered for 200 hr at 950°C in a helium atmosphere. Metallographic investigation and X-ray diffraction proved this time to be sufficient to allow complete homogenization before the subsequent high-temperature anneal. Each specimen was then sealed into an evacuated silica capsule and annealed at 1400"or 1500 C (except two) for 25 hr. (The 60 pct Fe and 55 pct Co alloys taken to 1610"and 1680°C respectively were held at these temperatures for 1hr.
