This paper aims to put into useful form the information, at hand regarding temperatures of molten steels, covering all carbon contents up to 1.5 per cent., in the hope that if the assumed ideal temperatures tabulated are incorrect the right ones may . be brought to light. THE finishing and casting temperature of steel is a subject concerning which there is so much to learn that some temerity is required to write about it. This paper is, therefore, suggestive rather than dogmatic, though the views expressed seem now to the writer to be correct; nevertheless, they may be modified by future developments or discoveries but until then may be of some utility, particularly to beginners in the making of steel. Consideration is limited to the temperatures of simple steels, also called carbon steels,, which are those in which carbon is the only element introduced for the purpose of conferring desired physical properties. Alloy steels will receive attention later. Three things largely determine what a batch of steel really will be; viz., composition, casting temperature, and rate of teeming. Each has its advocates as being the most important; but they are so interrelated that each must conform to or be right for the, other two. When one is claimed to be the most essential to have right, that, probably, was the one that it was found had to be of a certain description, within narrow limits, to suit the already adopted variations of the other two; that is, it was the last of the three to be brought into line.

It is stated by Dr. Tuttle in a paper read before the New Jersey Historical Society, that the celebrated Dickerson mine at Succasunna, Morris Co., N. J., yielded ore, about as early as 1710, for use at the Whippany forge, on Rockaway River, between Rockaway and Boonton. The ore was, for some time, free to all who chose to dig it. The tract embracing the Dickerson mine mas taken up, on account of its minerals, in 1713 or 1714, by John Reading, who sold it in 1716 to Joseph Kirkbride. John Jackson built a forge in 1722 on the Rockaway River a mile west of Dover. The ore here worked was probably chiefly from the Dickerson mine, but a portion may have been Hibernia. Hon. E. D. Almost a decade has elapsed since the problem of fine particles processing was first discussed at the National Science Foundation workshop in Arden House (Somasundaran and Fuerstenau, 1976). Problems involved in processing fines are as enormous now as they were then. We still lose 20 to 50% of mineral values during the processing of many ores. While the problem's magnitude has remained at as high a level as ever, our perspective on the causes for the difficulties, I believe, has changed. While we do not yet see any grand unified solution to all the problems in this area, I do feel that we are beginning to get an understanding of the basic reasons for the behavior of fines. I would like to share my views on the fundamental reasons for the problems we face. They are based essentially on results obtained during the last few years. A decade ago, I presented the reasons shown in the [Fig. 1] as the causes for the difficulties in separating fines. We have seen the same type of information discussed by others during the years since then. I now believe that these are not the only primary causes. Indeed, they do contribute, but there are other major reasons we ought to recognize. Mass certainly would have its effect, but since microorganisms and even ions can be separated from each other using flotation, provided correct conditions are used. I do not believe that fines 10,000 times bigger suffer fundamentally from their smallness or lightness. Similarly, the surface energy increase cannot be as important a fundamental factor since, theoretically, we should not see significant changes in surface energy until we get down to particles a hundred times finer than we are concerned with. Increase in surface areas, again, cannot be a primary problem except for an increase in reagent consumption. What possibly could be the reasons? I have added these three items to the list in [Fig. 1]: morphology, mineralogy, and surface chemical composition. Differences that I believe are partly responsible for the behavior of mineral fines are those due to alterations in morphology or mineralogy and surface chemical composition with decrease in size.

YVO4:EU, excited under 3650A radiation, shows a marked increase in total brightness with in~rease in temperature. At 25°C the response to 3650A radiation is about 48 pct of its maximum response which occurs at about 350°C, Fig. 1. In an attempt to explain the phenomenon, one of the present authors' (R.K.D.) investigated the diffuse reflectance spectra of the phosphor at different temperatures (up to -150°C) and was unable to observe any significant change to which the increased brightness could be reasonably ascribed. Since then diffuse reflectance spectra at elevated temperatures have been obtained in this laboratory using an improved device. A significant decrease in the diffuse reflectance of a phosphor in the ultraviolet region—especially in the longer wavelength region—at -300°C has been observed. The purpose of this note is to describe the device used for high-temperature reflectance measurements and to explain the increased brightness of YVO4:Eu phosphor at elevated temperatures under 3650A excitation. Experimental. YVO4 and YVO4:Eu samples were prepared as previously described.' An article on the subject of electrolytic zinc no longer needs to be preceded by an apology. The production of zinc by electrolysis is past the laboratory stage and has become an economic factor of considerable importance in the total production of zinc in the United States. The various methods of procedure to be followed fa the greatest economy of manufacture are fairly well known, consequently a detailed description of any method is no longer necessary or desirable. In this paper I shall endeavor to lay down some of the governing conditions in this industry, the relation of methods to ore deposits, freight rates, and sources of power supply. Power Points Assuming for a moment that, for the present at least, the electrolytic production of zinc will be confined to Those localities having developed water power, a glance at these powers so developed in the United States, with their relation to known zinc orebodies of economic size, will not be without interest. Northwest In the Northwest we have water powers, developed and undeveloped, . in Washington and Montana. These must, of course, bear a close relation to the rapidly growing zinc production of the Coeur d'Alenes and of the Butte districts. In general, the power of the territory in question is relatively low-priced, at least as compared with the cost of developing power from coal, and the near neighborhood of large bodies of more or less complex zinc ores makes these water powers of more than usual interest. The same remarks may be applied equally to the developed water powers of the Canadian side of the line in the Northwest, where we have again commercially available complex ore deposits such as are being exploited today at and near Trail. INTRODUCTION Coal quality control in mining and mine planning has always been important and has become even more essential in recent years due to environmental considerations. The primary consumers of the sub-bituminous coals found in the Powder River Basin are electric utilities that require low sulfur coals to meet government air quality regulations. Electric generating plants are designed to burn coal of a specific quality, and the supplier of that coal must be able to guarantee shipments within specified quality tolerances. Over the past several years, Exxon Coal USA and, more recently, The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal USA, have established an evaluation and development program to accurately define the geology and quality of their coal properties. This requires an adequate drill hole density so that detailed correlations of the coal seam and the lithologic units, or benches, within the coal seam can be made. These units are recognizable in the core and also on geophysical logs. Like any systematic approach, geologic modeling has been refined and improved through new technologies. Today, coal seam properties are mapped using computer applications. Rapid access and manipulation of these data allow for optimization of mining efforts. This presentation will demonstrate how a detailed mapping program can be important in both pre-mine development and in-pit quality control.

THE British Industrial Fatigue Research Board has issued its annual report covering the year 1925, and a nine-page review of it, by George E. Shepard, was published in this country in the November, 1926, Bulletin of the Society of Industrial Engineers. The report gives results of three different investigations, all of which indicate that rest-pauses, where the spells .of work are 41/2 hr. long or more, not only increase the contentment of the workers, but often bring about an increase in output. A report on the physiology of ventilation is about to be published, and one on the theory of ventilation has been issued. These seem to add but little to the work being done in this country by the Bureau of Mines and the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers. Other studies made are on atmospheric conditions in cotton weaving, on lighting in composing rooms, on repetitive work, the teaching of muscular skill, the energy expenditure in heavy work, the metabolic processes involved in violent exercise, the relation between oxygen intake and lactic acid in the blood, and fatigue in localized groups of muscles. Most of this material is intended for advanced workers in these fields, but will be of interest to engineers who desire to keep up with cur-rent progress in the determination of the facts involved in fatigue resulting from industrial work.

The spontaneous polarization surveys dealt with in this paper were carried out near Guddadarangavvanahalli (lat. 14° 17' N.; long. 76° 24' E.) in Chitaldrug district, which forms part of the Chitaldrug schist belt. The occurrence of gold, copper, lead and antimony ores has been noticed for several years but efforts to exploit them have been unsuccessful, therefore some spontaneous polarization surveys were made in the hope of finding indications of workable ore bodies. The country examined has a rugged topography, with numerous hills on which there is little vegetation. The climate is generally dry, the average annual rainfall of the tract being about 25 in., of which 17 in. occurs during the southwest monsoon. The geological formations of the area pertain to an ancient schistose series known as the Dharwar system (Archean). Locally, the rock formations have been divided into three series1—the chloritic series (or the Chitaldrug formation), the clay series (or the G.R. formation) and the trap series (or the Jogimardi trap). The chloritic series includes a complex of altered ancient traps and volcanic agglomerates intermixed with some schists of sedimentary origin, all of which are highly metamorphosed. The lithological types of this series are mostly distinguishable as greenstone schists, calc-chloritic schists, slaty schists, ochery and calcareous mica-chlorite schists, with subordinate bands of secondary limestone. The clay series (G.R. formation) is made up of shaly and argillistic schists, litho-margic clays, sandstones and brecciated ferruginous quartzites. The Jogimardi trap is mostly of the nature of an epidiorite (hornblende diabase), which is distinctly intrusive in the form of large laccolithic and narrower dikelike masses. In addition to this trap, there are other minor intrusives such as the chalybitic trap, quartz porphyry and quartz reefs. The topographical and geological features of the area are noted on the map of Fig. I. The locations of some of the spontaneous polarization centers determined by the geophysical survey are indicated also. Method of Survey and Apparatus Employed The spontaneous polarization surveys were carried out in the manner recommended by the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey.2 Preliminary reconnaissance was first carried out along a series of parallel traverse lines that were laid out over the area. THE older coal chemist had a much simpler conception of coal than we have today. To him coal was a mineral composed essentially of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, ash, and water, in various proportions. His studies on the constitution of coal were directed along the conventional lines of proximate and ultimate chemical analyses and making deductions from these data without any real appreciation of the fact that coal is a conglomerate of various chemical compounds, including many of the most complex structures known to organic chemistry. The view of the modern coal chemist is well expressed by Franz Fischer, I who says that while proximate and ultimate analyses are important both from the scientific and technical point of view, they tell the chemist no more concerning the number and kinds of chemical compounds that constitute coal than the reader would learn of the contents of a book if told that the printed contents consisted of 15 per cent. of the letter "e," 5 per cent. of the letter "n," 1 per cent. of the letter "g," 4 per cent. of the letter "b," etc. As the reader must have the grouping of letters into words and words into sentences, so the chemist must have the grouping of atoms into molecules and the proportion of each molecular compound in the coal aggregate before he acquires an adequate knowledge of the constitution of coal. Modern investigators2 are laying the foundation of a new chemistry of coal based on the biochemistry of plants and the chemical changes involved in processes of fermentation and decay. As

In the death of Sir William Siemens, the Institute loses its most distinguished honorary member, one who, without exaggeration, may be ranked among the greatest Men of the century. In justification of this claim, I quote in part the words of two other men eminent in the walks of science. Professor Huxley, addressing the Royal Society, spoke of Siemens as "a marked example of vast energy, large scientific acquirements, and intellectual power of a high order," and as one " who had no superior in fertility and ingenuity of invention, while hardly any living man so thoroughly combined an extensive knowledge of scientific principles with the power of applying then] in a commercially successful manner. The value of his numerous inventions must be measured, not merely by the extent to which they have increased the wealth and convenience of mankind, but by the favorable reaction on the progress of pure science which they, like all such inventions, have exerted, and will continually exert." Dr. Wedding, in his address before the Verein zur Befarderung des Gewerbefleisses in Preussm, speaks of Siemens as being "so fortunate as to combine German erudition with British activity in such a manner that both nations, Gertnan as well as English, were equally proud of him; and, now that his rich life is ended, regret is expressed on both shores of the North Sea, first by the Germans that his entire life had not been spent in Germany, and his powers dedicated to Germany, and by the English that he was not born a Briton." Germany may well be proud of being the birth-place, not only of such a man, but of such a family; for where in history shall we find in a single family such a wide range of knowledge so successfully applied to the arts? Poly crystalline silver chloride specimens having different micro structures were prepared by extruding monocrystals or precompressed powder at varying temperatures. Extrusion at high temperature (370°C) produced a Fully recrystallized equi-axed material which was brittle and fractured by simple cleavage below its transition temperature (60°C for notched specimens). Extrusion at low temperatures (down to -196°C) produced an extremely tough cold-worked material with grains elongated in the extrusion direction. This material fractured below its transition temperature (which varied from —20" to —200°C) by an intergranular mode. It is concluded that cold work increases the resistance to transgranular cleavage. Fracture is then de-flected to propagate intergranularly ouer surfaces making an angle with the tensile axis with a corresponding improvement in notch toughness. This deflection is greater for extruded powder than for extruded monocrystals because of the extremely elongated grain shape. PREVIOUS work1,' on the fracture properties of fully recrystallized silver chloride under notch impact conditions has indicated that the fracture behavior is rather invariant. Thus polycrystalline materials originating from a number of sources ranging from relatively pure Harshaw single crystals to commercial-purity powder and prepared by hot extrusion at 370°C all fracture by simple cleavage with a ductile-brittle transition at 60°C, see Fig. 1. This behavior is also typical for fully annealed single crystals and appears to be fundamental to silver chloride for the particular loading conditions and notch configuration adopted. One way in which this characteristic fracture behavior can be modified is by the dispersion of alumina particles in the silver chloride matrix.' Then, particularly when the alumina particles are in the shape of spheres, the duc tile-brittle transition is much less sharply defined and occurs over a range of temperature, the transition temperature is lowered considerably and the fracture mode changes from simple cleavage to a fibrous or shear mode. The reason for this change is believed to be partly due to the nucleation of cavities in the region of the dispersed alumina particles which influences the state of stress locally and the distribution of plastic constraint at the root of the notch. It is emphasized however that this is not the sole factor responsible for the increase in toughness. In extruded materials it is reasonable to expect that the resultant grain size, texture, and the residual cold work will be influenced by the presence of a dispersed phase. The present experiments were initially designed to determine the extent to which cold work influenced the fundamental ductile-brittle transition temperature and fracture mode of silver chloride. They were stimulated by the discovery that silver chloride could be extruded at temperatures as low as -25°C when commercial-purity powder was used and as low as -196°C when single crystals were used. This working temperature was far below that previously used (370°C) and it was found that such extruded material was exceedingly tough. The reasons for the enhanced toughness and its relation to the previous work on silver chloride-alumina compacts will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials Used. This meeting marks the point at which the long-standing dissatisfaction with the mineral-land laws, the innumerable protests against them, and the many isolated efforts to obtain relief, have developed into a general movement for their revision. That part of the mining industry which is affected by these laws has three general organizations which are able to speak for it: the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of . America, and the American Mining Congress; all of which are represented in this meeting. In the series of able and thoughtful papers presented here, prominent men have discussed the evils of the present laws and some of the reforms which should be made in them. We all appreciate fully the ultimate value of these studies; but we are also painfully aware of the fact that discussion of this kind has been going on for a quarter of a century without any other effect than a steady increase in the mass of printed records stored on library shelves. In order to get any practical result we Gust induce an indifferent government at Washington to act, and to do this we must unite in pushing some practical plan whereby it may act in a simple and effective way and with the least possible amount of criticism or opposition. The actual question before us is not whether the mining laws are bad; for their evils and absurdities are not only beyond discussion but also beyond the resources of a temperate and dignified vocabulary. It is not what particular changes ought to be made; for it is premature to make . specific recommendations until there is some one to listen to them. Moreover, we all know that there are wisdom and experience enough available, and awaiting that time, for the creation of a code which would be a model to the mining world. The practical question now is, how to obtain the revision; and since the American Mining Congress has of late restricted its attention to this phase of the problem I wish as one of its representatives here to present its views upon the matter.

The phase diagram of the Pseudobinary section PbTe-Fe was determined. It was found to contain a monotectic and a eutectic reaction, the latter one taking place at 14 at. pct Fe and 875° * 5°C. The solid solubility of iron in PbTe was found to be 0.3 at. pct by electronmicroProbe analysis. No solubility of PbTe was detected in iron. Slight deviations from true pseudobinary behavior were found to occur in the range of - 5 to 10 at. pct Fe. In the course of a general investigation of reactions of various metals with lead and tin telluride,' the lead telluride-iron system was reinvestigated. It had been established much earlier than iron does not chemically react with lead telluride but forms a eutectic with a melting point of 879" The eutectic composition or other related information has never been reported, but for a number of years iron has been in general use for contacting of lead telluride and lead telluride alloys for thermoelectric applications. It seems therefore desirable to clarify the exact constitution of the system to furnish a base for the long-term evaluation of bonds made between lead telluride and iron either by pressure contacting or by brazing methods. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lead telluride-iron alloys were prepared in 10-g charges, using premelted lead telluride. This material was prepared from high-purity, semiconductor-grade lead and tellurium obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and described as 99.999 pct pure. The iron used was "Armco" iron; the major impurities found here were 0.02 pct C, 0.018 pct Si, and 0.015 pct Cr. All remaining impurities were less than 0.01, the total of all impurities not exceeding 0.15 pct. Charges were prepared in closed quartz arnpoules which were evacuated and in some cases backfilled with high-purity argon to retard excessive lead telluride evaporation and deposition in slightly cooler parts of the ampoule. For high iron concentrations, this can lead to total separation of the constituents, since the vapor pressure and the sublimation rate of PbTe are quite high.4 Nevertheless, since the ampoules are closed, no change in overall composition was expected and the nominal composition of all alloys was assumed to be retained. X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis, and microsections were used in the evaluation of the alloys. The nature of the system was such that X-ray diffraction was not particularly helpful. It merely served to establish that at all concentrations PbTe and a! iron were in equilibrium at room temperature. Thermal analysis was carried out by taking direct temperature vs time curves on a Sargent recorder where a width of 10 in. was kept as 1 or 0.5 mv by use of an automatic bucking voltage network. Quartz ampoules with minimized dead space, coated with boron nitride and fitted with a thermocouple reentrant, were used as containers for the charge. At high temperatures and over long periods of time, boron nitride reacts with iron. For the thermal analysis runs, however, this was not significant. More significant was the fact that the vapor pressure of PbTe at some of the meas -uring temperatures apparently exceeded I atrn quite considerably. This, in some cases, caused the slightly softened quartz tubes to blow out if great care was not taken to contain them and minimize time and temperatures used. As containers pure nickel tubes were used which also served to avoid temperature gradients in the quartz ampoule. Nevertheless, the experimental difficulties at high temperatures were severe and the monotectic temperature could therefore not be determined accurately. In general, the accuracy reached by the thermal analysis setup in this case is *4"C as determined with gold, silver, and tin, under the conditions of analysis here. Inherently, the apparatus is capable of reaching accuracies better than i 1°C. Also, difficulties were encountered in microsection-ing. They were related to polishing, since it is rather difficult to avoid pulling the iron out of the weak and brittle lead telluride matrix. It proved best to follow a procedure where, after grinding to 600 grit on carborundum paper, a polish with 6 p diamond was used on nylon cloth. Finally, #3 "Buehler" alumina and an automatic polisher were used for -5 min only, to avoid relief. The best etching results were achieved with

In mid-1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of Asarco and the Anaconda Company, initiated a six-phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration targets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable downdip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: replacement mineralization in the Mississippian Humbug formation below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City anticline; replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein; replacement mineralization in the Permian Park City formation in the West End shaft area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back vein in the Judge mine. In 1971 the Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended, due to a 30% cutback in the exploration budget. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure, five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug and Doughnut formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

Occurrrences of South African uranium have been known qualitatively for over twenty years, but no account was taken of them because of their low grade. In 1945, known uranium deposits were few, but their grades were 20 to 100 times higher than South African ores. Viewed in this light, the exploitation of South Africa's uranium is revolutionary indeed. Development of various analytical procedures capable of dealing with the needs of the project accounted for one-half of the cost and included: a) simple and automatic radiometric analytical procedures, b) sampling procedures appropriate to prevent sample contamination, c) procedures for sample and record-storing to accommodate many thousands of analyses per month, d) chemical methods giving high accuracy analyses for high grade samples not at radioactive equilibrium, and e) development of rapid procedures having moderate accuracy for low grade samples i.e., mill tailings and barren liquors. This task is continuing today with major improvements coming from time to time.
