The price of crude oil in Kentucky did not change very much during 1935 until the latter part of the year, but more stabilized conditions and an increase in consumption of natural gas made the year a more profitable one than the year 1934. The production of crude oil in 1935 amounted to 5,175,054 bbl. as compared to 4,814,904 bbl. in 1934. This increase was due to two developments: (1) the application of new recovery methods to old fields, which, although in operation in the state for several years, had never before reached a point where the production obtained, while highly satisfactory where applied, was sufficient to influence the totals in the production figures; (2) the development of the Fordsville area in Ohio County, where shallow depths enabled the operators to complete the development of a large number of wells with a good flush production probably accounted for most of the increase. A map showing the location of oil and gas pools in Kentucky was published last year.' The fields of eastern Kentucky, producing from the Weir sand of the Waverly group of the Lower Mississippian series, in Johnson, Magoffin, Lawrence and Elliott counties, produced 826,001 bbl. of oil in 1935 as compared with 902,247 bbl. in the previous year. No new wells were drilled in this area during the year, except those for use as intake wells in repressuring. What has been done in the few small areas within these fields in the way of repressuring has produced results sufficient to a great extent to offset the natural decline of all the field. It is probable the drilling of new wells and construction of new plants will be such as to cause these fields to produce more in 1936 than was produced in the past year. This is based on the fact that the sand is highly favorable for repressuring and the results obtained show from 300 to 500 per cent increase in production. The various factors considered in recommending the initiation of a gas injection project in the southern portion of the Cedar Lake Field are discussed. Performance history under gas injection operations is reviewed and these data are analyzed, utilizing both the material balance method and the fractional flow and frontal advance expressions. Results of the analysis of the performance data indicate that the injected gas has contacted and affected at least 60 per cent of the reservoir and a substantial increase in ultimate recovery can reasonably be expected. By holding the reservoir pressure appreciably above the bubble point, the well productive capacities have been maintained substantially above the level predicted for primary operations. The analysis of the Cedar Lake project suggests that in certain limestone reservoirs, at least, the probable success of gas injection cannot be predicted simply from ohservation of permeability distribution throughout the pay section, as indicated by core analysis data, on either one or a number of wells. Further, the performance of this particular project fails to indicate any basis for classifying carbonate reservoirs in general as being inherently unsuited to a dispersed type gas injection program, thus indicating that each reservoir should be considered on its own merits, regardless of the composition of the reservoir rock. A full scale dispersed type gas injection program has been in operation on leases of the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. in the southern portion of the field for nearly five years, and sufficient performance data are now available to evaluate the benefits which have been derived from this project. It is the primary purpose of this paper to analyze the performance data for the Cedar Lake gas injection project and to point out the significance of the ohserved behavior with respect to certain hypotheses which have been advanced in recent years concerning the probable success of gas injection projects in limestone reservoirs. This paper properly should be regarded more on the order of a progress report, inasmuch as some revision in interpretation will undoubtedly be required from time to time as additional performance data are obtained, although the satisfactory performance of the project to date leaves little doubt as to the ultimate success of gas injection in the Cedar Lake Field. As a result of the success of the project to date, a unit was formed in the southern part of the field, effective March 1, 1951, for the purpose of continuation of the gas injection program. Participants in this unit are the Mid-Continent Petroleum Co. and Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. GEOLOGY AND STRATIGRAPHY The Cedar Lake Field is located in the northern portion of the Midland Basin area as shown in Fig. 1. The southwest portion of the field lies within a playa, or dry salt lake, which covers an area of approximately eight square miles. As might be expected, it was this lake which furnished the inspiration for the name of the field. Except for its value as a salt water disposal pit, this lake has succeeded only in magnifying the difficulties in developing this portion of the field. Typical of this section of West Texas, the area in general is relatively flat and has a semi-arid climate. The localized structure which favored the accumulation of oil is an anticline with approximately 100 ft of closure. The major axis of the structure extends in a general southeast-northwest direction. Originally this structure was defined by seismograph data, which have been subsequently confirmed by development. In general, the geologic column is typical of that found throughout the basin. From the surface to depth of approximately 1,800 ft, surface sands and undifferentiated red beds. probably Triassic. are encountered. Below this point to the producing horizon, all formations are of the Permian age.

The investigation of domestic talcs was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, at the request of the U. S. Army, on Dec. 1, 1941: "Considerable concern has been expressed by the Supply Arms and Service over maintaining continued availability of supplies of the necessary raw materials. These ceramic products are used by the Signal Corps in all army radio equipment, and to a greater degree in the new ultra-high-frequency equipment. The Air Corps has become a user of large amounts of radio-grade ceramics for' aircraft spark-plug covers required for high-altitude operations. In addition, the use of this material is essential to the proper functioning of the radio air-navigation aids of the Civil Aeronautics Board." History The use of steatite and talc in ceramic bodies goes back a great many years. If pure, talcs shrink little under heat-treatment and are very resistant to heat shock. The massive form, commonly called "steatite" by the trade, cuts and works easily, and this was naturally the first method used in obtaining articles of talc. When gas was in general use for illuminating purposes, a. large business was carried on in the manufacture of tips for gas burners.' With the development of uses for electricity, low-tension insulators were made in a similar manner; and, in fact, the forming of shapes from massive talc continues. However, as the business increased, cuttings and waste became more and more of a problem. In the twenties, one of the larger producing firms had a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines at its Columbus station to work out a body using the finely powdered material. Somewhat earlier, manufacturers of spark plugs used the finely ground talc as part of the body and to some extent in wall-tile bodies. Somewhat later it came into use for kiln furniture and similar products and still more recently it has been used in some dinnerwares. With the development of the radio and the high-frequency fields generated, it was found that a dense steatite porcelain was far better than even high-tension electrical porcelain, which is a clay-flint-feldspathic type of body. Until the war increased the demand, the several pioneer steatite-porcelain manufacturers were able to furnish adequate supplies. When war began in Europe and Asia, three important foreign sources of raw material were cut off; i.e., the French, Italian, and Man-churian talcs. I HAVE taken the liberty of calling the researches herein mentioned industrial, to distinguish them from those strictly scientific, where every known appliance is used to insure accuracy in determining principles. The industrial researches are made to ascertain wherein we have failed to embody, in practice, the principles which have been fully demonstrated by the more purely scientific investigations. So far the researches have been mostly confined to the conditions of combustion as used in locomotive furnaces, although we have examined, to some extent, furnaces under marine and stationary boilers. The products of complete combustion are gases, and, knowing what we should have, it is at once shown by analyzing the products whether the desired reactions are taking place. In spite of imperfect furnaces, lack of system in the arrangement of grate-bars and exhaust nozzles, the results are not altogether vitiated, because the analyses are not closer than one-tenth of one per cent., as under the present conditions it is hardly possible to collect gas exactly under the same conditions at different times. All of our industrial operations have developed in the past few years so rapidly, nearly all of them paying, that, until within the past three years, comparatively little attention has been given to their economy outside of the profession. Great corporations have not asked and considered the question in earnest, can we utilize our heat so as to produce the same effect at less cost? The applications of heat are so extensive, entering into every branch of industry, the principal power used to carry on metallurgical processes, to conduct transportation, that its economical generation becomes of universal importance; in fact, its economical generation and application is the leading industrial question of the day. It is stated by those who have given the subject much attention, that in our best steam-engines not over 10 per cent of the theoretical value of the fuel is utilized, and upon locomotives it is far less, probably not exceeding under the most favorable circumstances 5 or 6 per cent. In recent experiments made with the dynagraph, in drawing trains upon the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway from Cleveland to Erie, 95i miles, we found the force required to draw a stock train of 709 tons to be 2,498,396,320 foot-pounds, exclusive of the force to move the locomotive itself. THE growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. His-torically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors of rocks, minerals and fossils. Thus geology evolved as a descriptive science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treat-ment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of, their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European uni-versities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with ,the university departments of the other sciences.

A nonlinear dynamic model for a flotation cell is developed, using a number of simplifying assumptions, the most important of which is that of essentially complete liberation in the feed material. Using this model, a complete dynamic model for a flotation circuit is developed and calibrated against steady- state process data. The dynamic response of the circuit to disturbances in input feed rate and composition is simulated, as is the response of a linearized and simplified model on which control design might be more easily based. Preliminary results indicate the practicability of the modeling technique. However, difficulties in matching steady-state operating conditions in one process stream, and the apparent importance of recycle streams as indicators of process operation, indicate that inclusion of at least one species of middling particle in the model should be considered.

D. C. Ralston (U. S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—Flake mica can be beneficiated by a wider variety of methods than almost any known mineral. However, most of these methods are not recorded. It is therefore a pleasure to find a written record of another application of a new method of beneficiation. The fact that the Humphries spiral gives a concentrate containing the mica flake mixed with the slime and small grit has forced a further separation by screening, in which the finest of the flake will pass through. Fine flake has its uses and if mixed with slimes or clay is recoverable reliably only by flotation. This loss must be charged against the spiral. On the other hand, the new muscovite mica paper recently brought out by General Electric Co., can be made only with grit free flake larger than 50 mesh. It is of interest to learn from the authors whether the washing of the flake on a 50 mesh screen can take the grit content below 1 pct, to meet this new demand. Must another degritting process be used on the flake, like electrostatic treatment of the dried material? H. D. Snedden (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—When recovering mica in the spiral, gangue particles coarser than 16 mesh can be rejected more readily when operating at a high pulp density (35 pct solids) or a low volume rate (—15 gpm). A launder screen as used by Lehigh Coal Co. has proved very satisfactory to partially dewater the mica concentrate and to reject any gangue slimes it may contain. Under certain conditions mica cleaning in the spiral can be improved by reagentizing the spiral feed, the object being to insure wetting of the gangue minerals and to agglomerate or prevent wetting of the mica particles. R. B. Adair (authors' reply)—The grit content of the mica recovered on Humphreys Spirals varies with the fineness of the launder screen used to clean the mica product. Normal practice has been the use of 80 mesh screen, which will produce a mica product of acceptable grit content for most purposes. By using a 50 mesh screen, and increasing the screen area per ton of feed, it is felt by the authors that a mica of 99 pct plus purity could be obtained. This statement would hold only in the case of mica feed which was well de-laminated, and free from "clay balls," (semikaclinized feldspar), which tends to follow the mica through the process.

For several hundred years the petroleum industry has flourished in Burma and at the close of the eighteenth century there were over five hundred producing wells in the Yenangyaung field. These were laboriously dug by hand and were exceedingly primitive, yet even today a small part of India's total production is obtained from hand-dug wells. The Indian Empire, the cradle of the oil industry, today produces but an unimpressive fraction of the world's supply of petroleum, not because the size of her contribution has diminished, but because it has remained more or less stationary while other countries have far outstripped her during the prodigious increase in the world's production of petroleum in recent years. Though for the past 10 years the total production in India has been remarkably constant, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain this output and at any rate from the older fields a slow decline may be anticipated unless new productive horizons are discovered. Production figures for the 10 years 192&1929 (the last year for which figures are available) are given by fields in Table 1. Crudes of Burma and Assam The bulk of India's production comes from the Yenangyaung and Singu fields, from which the crudes are very similar, the only important difference being that the oil from the Singu-Yenangyat structure contains a higher percentage of lighter fractions. The Burma crudes resemble that of the Panhandle of Texas and have a high content of solid paraffin, though strictly speaking the oil is of mixed base with a low content of asphaltum. With the exception of the negligible production from Sabe, the Burma crudes do not require dehydration; the sulfur content is very low and is innocuous. A small amount of naphthenic acids occurs in the kerosene and intermediate oil fractions while the lubricating fraction is practically free from acid. The ash content is low and the average A.P.I. gravity of mixtures of Yenangyaung and Singu oil is 36.4. Only solute-independent and solute-dependent boundary migration during recrystallization in zone-refined, poly crystalline aluminum, and during grain growth in zone-refined tin. with the advent of zone-refining, however, has it been possible to carry out such studies on high-purity metals, and thus to delineate quantitatively the major effect On the migration rates of very small percentages of dissolved imPurities. During the past five years, the mining industry has been subjected to new operating constraints that are unprecedented in number, scope, and urgency. The industry must operate in a safer, cleaner manner, yet produce more without large price increases. Compliance with any new sweeping legislation is always difficult-and particularly so in today's adverse economic climate, which is being aggravated by the steady stream of environmental control and tax-reform programs. In effect, while government is unwittingly but surely undercutting the country's productive capabilities, it blames industry for the resulting failure to meet consumer demand. Any such real or alleged failure then brings heightened bitterness from Congress. During the recent energy shortage, for instance, threats of nationalization were ventilated in public along with proposals to abolish the mineral depletion allowance.

Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." A technique for studying the mechanism of the froth flotation process in which continuous froth removal does not take place but, instead, an equilibrium is reached between froth and pulp is described. A flotation cell, specially designed to facilitate equilibration, and froth and pulp sampling procedures are described. The main advantage of the technique is that the ability to measure the steady-state froth height allows froth-stability effects to be separated from pulp-process effects. In the flotation of hematite front quartz, linear relationships are found between airflow rate and froth height and between airflow rate and the ratio at equilibrium of mass of values in froth to mass of values in the pulp. A simple mechanistic interpretation of these results is given. It is suggested that froth-stability effects may play a more important role than hitherto allowed. In particular, the way in which concentration and size distribution of gangue particles may affect overall flotation rate is shown.

The various electrode arrangements used in induced polarization (IP) surveying can be classified according to the geometry of the electric field being measured. The simplest geometry (Wenner, Schlumberger, gradient) is the parallel or plane-wave electric field, while the three-array and pole-dipole array measure the field about a point current electrode. In the dipole-dipole array the characteristics of a dipolar field are approximately measured. The drill hole arrays employ variations of these fundamental geometries, depending on the objectives of the survey. This report compares the relative advantages and disadvantages of each of the commonly used surface and drill hole IP electrode arrays. Factors of each array that are considered are signal-to-noise ratio, EM coupling rejection, speed and cost, and resolution of polarizable bodies. It is concluded that certain arrays are better suited for different exploration objectives and for different geological conditions. Also the type and capabilities of the IP surveying equipment and method limit the choice of arrays.
