Secondary treated sewage effluent was substituted for normal process water in laboratory tests simulating froth flotation recovery of copper and molybdenum sulfides. Sewage effluent caused significant detrimental response in the flotation process. First, a voluminous, uncontrollable froth was generated, even in the absence of a frothing agent, that has little mineral carrying ability. Second, sewage effluent caused a small loss in copper recovery and a large loss in molybdenum recovery. The detrimental effects of sewage effluent on flotation were partially overcome by tertiary treatment of the effluent by activated carbon adsorption and anion exchange. The frothing problem was significantly reduced after treating the sewage effluent by foam fractionation. Dilution of the effluent with normal process water resulted in a significant improvement in metal recovery. In addition, the large loss in molybdenum recovery was overcome by using a secondary collector in a combination reagent schedule. However, the secondary collector caused an appreciable loss in copper recovery.

I WOULD like to spend a few minutes describing to you the present condition which exists in the oil industry and then point out some aspects of this deplorable situation in which I think petroleum engineers can be helpful. As you know, the oil business at this time is in a very critical condition, .due to the tremendous potential production in excess of current demand. This is a world-wide condition as well as a national problem, as it is estimated that the surplus production available for the market in foreign countries is of about the same proportion as that existing in the United States. Due to the inability within the United States to hold production within the bounds of demand prices have been slumping for the last four years and at this time have reached the point where the sales value of the average barrel of crude oil in the United States, is far below the cost, of production. In addition to the large amount of potential production available for the market in excess of demand we have in storage in the United States about six hundred fifty millions of barrels 'of oil. Unless something can be done to limit the amount of oil coming onto the market to a point well below the demand, which point will permit the reduction of stocks, it looks as though the 'oil business is facing demoralization.

The Panhandle area of northwest Texas embraces the northern portion of the Permian Basin of Texas as well as a considerable portion of the western part of the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma. For the purpose of this report it will include in addition to the 20 counties of the Panhandle proper the two tiers of counties lying to the south, a total area of about 32,000 square miles. Crossing the Texas Panhandle diagonally from northwest to southeast is the Amarillo Arch, related to which is all of the production discovered to date. Oil Production Up to Jan. 1, 1930, the Panhandle has produced about 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. The peak yearly production occurred in 1927, during which period 49,000,000 bbl. were produced. In 1928 the production fell to 25,000,000 bbl., but in 1929, on account of important discoveries in Gray County, the total increased to 31,000,000 bbl. To date Hutchinson County has produced 64 per cent. of the total. Table 1 shows the total yearly production by counties. The present production of the Panhandle is 100,500 bbl. from 1745 wells or an average of 57.6 bbl. per well compared to a production on Jan. 1, 1929, of 59,748 bbl. from 1468 wells or an average of 40.7 bbl. per well. Discussion of the paper of Herbert F.. Miller, Jr., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 409 to 413. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.:-Looking at the illustrations, it seems to me that a furnace made with the width of port that is shown here would not be a good working furnace. The economy of brick and gas might be all right, but I do not think it would melt the steel properly. I should say that the flame would not spread out suitably to fill the whole hearth of the furnace, and there would be undue waste, and it seems to me that it would be an undesirable furnace to adopt. The question as to whether a producer-gas flame would lie down in the furnace, hugging the bottom better than the natural-gas flame, is settled, not so much by the specific gravity of the gases themselves, as by the relative temperatures at which they enter the laboratory of the furnace. We know in that case that producer gas would be lighter than a natural gas which had not been run through a regenerator and expanded four or five volumes in consequence. I would like to hear what Mr. Miller has to say about the action of the flame spreading properly over the charge to give good metallurgical results in the form of furnace which he presents.

Delays in the completion of the alterations to the plant at the works of Messrs. Oliver Bros. and Phillips, in Pittsburgh, coupled with the increased demand for metal made from regular Bessemer pig, placing the firm many hundreds of tons behind in their deliveries, prevented Mr. Henry W. Oliver, Jr., from redeeming his promise to place his works at my disposal for further tests of high-phosphorus irons, until May 5th. Upon that date, I assumed charge of the operations in his steel-plant. Mr. Oliver had purchased Neshannock pig as a basis for a supply of phosphorus. My information is to the effect that this iron is made from low-grade Lake Superior ores and mill-cinder, the latter "ore" being utilized to about 40 per cent. of the total mixture. At all events the pig had quite as much phosphorus, and in as varying quantities, as the most exacting could desire. My experiments of last fall had well satisfied me as to the effect of from 0.35 to 0.55 per cent. of phosphorus in the Clapp Griffiths metal. Hence at this time my first trials were directed to

W. O. Philbrook (Carnegie Institute of Technology, Phila.)—Mr. DeVaney's paper is a valuable addition to the growing technology of the magnetic roasting of lean iron ores. His furnace is ingeniously designed to permit close control of the process and to achieve high thermal efficiency by counter-current heat exchange and the withdrawal of both solid and gaseous products at relatively low temperatures. The principle of using a lean reducing gas to avoid over-reduction of the ore even at high operating temperatures (for rapid re-action rate) is thoroughly sound. The gas analyses and flow rates reported, however, are internally incon- sistent and render suspect any details of a heat balance based upon them. While it is entirely proper to consider the entrant gas as a reagent and to account only for the heat evolved by consuming a portion of the gas, many operators are accustomed to a heat balance using the total calorific value of the reagent supplied; and comparison of heat balances made with different bases of calculation can be quite misleading. Since Mr. DeVaney's paper is likely to be cited frequently in future discussions of magnetic roasting processes, it seems worth while to point out the internal discrepancies and to give alternate values of heat requirements for different bases of calculation.

WHEN apparent resistivity data are taken with the symmetrical Wenner 4-electrode spread, a fixed center position is used and readings are taken for values of electrode separation. Basic data consist of apparent resistivity plotted against separation of adjacent electrodes . The interpreter attempts to infer geologic structure, such as the depth to discontinuities and the nature of subsurface earth materials. An earlier paper' described methods for interpreting resistivity data. All of these involve a severe assumption, namely that the earth in the region of interest consists of horizontal layers, electrically homogeneous and isotropic. The actual earth never satisfies this assumption exactly and may deviate from it so much that none of the above methods can be applied. Attempts in three directions have been made to modify the assumption so that it approaches known geologic complexity more closely. First, curves have been calculated for dipping discontinuities. Stern' and Aldredge hose a few widely separated dip angles. Trudu confined his attention to small dips. Berel'kovskiy and Zubanov computed gradient curves for widely separated dip angles. Unz as given the most complete solution, with a brief attempt to treat the three-layer case. Second, anisotropy can be taken into account. It seems geologically probable that layered materials have different vertical and horizontal conductivities. Cagniard, Maillet, and Pirson et up methods for finding an equivalent hypothetical isotropic medium. Standard interpretation methods can be applied to this, and the actual medium can then be deduced. Belluigi'" discounts the practical importance of anisotropy; Geneslay and Rouget do not agree with his conclusion. Third, the effect of variable resistivity in a layer can be considered. Keck and Colby" examine the mathematics of an exponential increase in a surface layer. Several authors, for example, Stevenson,'' consider a continuous variation of resistivity with depth. The present paper deals with a linear variation of resistivity in a surface layer. Geologically, surface variations should be expected. Unconsolidated materials such as glacial drift show marked irregularities over short distances. The effects of weathering change with depth. The moisture content of material above the water table may vary from a dry sand to a saturated clay, and both of these will be changed by rainfall. Figs. 1 to 6 present apparent resistivity curves to show the effect of a variable surface layer. In all cases resistivity varies linearly with depth down to a depth of one unit. Material beneath this depth has constant resistivity. Electrode separation is plotted in depth units. Insets on each figure show the corresponding cross-sections, plotting true resistivity against depth. To illustrate, consider curve A of Fig. 1. The true resistivity of material at the surface of the earth is taken as 0.4 units. Resistivity increases with depth, reaching a value of 1.0 at 0.5 depth units and 1.6 at 1.0 depth units. Below a depth of 1.0, all the material has very low resistivity (zero, for purposes of calculation). Curve A in the main part of Fig. 1 shows how apparent resistivity varies for this case as the electrode spacing is increased. To illustrate further, curve E of Fig. 4 corresponds to true resistivity of 1.2 units at the surface, 1.0 at a depth of 0.5 units, 0.8 at a depth of 1.0, and 1.5 for all depths greater than 1.0. Apparent resistivity curves have been plotted logarithmically so that the shape of the curves becomes independent of the units, giving the curves wide validity. A certain drift-covered area, for example, shows a gradual decrease of resistivity from 230 ohm-meters at the surface to 150 ohm-meters at the bedrock surface, 275 ft down; bedrock resistivity is 800 ohm-meters. Curve E of Fig. 5 indicates that true resistivity decreases from 1.2 units at the surface to 0.8 at a depth of 1.0, then increases abruptly to a constant value of 4.0 units. Background The annual awards, which have been given by the US National Committee for Rock Mechanics since its inception in 1969, recognize out- standing research in rock mechanics. Such recognition has always been accompanied by a plaque or certificate for the winners and a presentation at the symposium awards banquet. Starting this year, the US National Committee will give the winners even more recognition and allow the rock mechanics community to benefit from the papers by publishing abstracts of the work in the proceedings of the 25th US Symposium on Rock Mechanics and in various society journals and news letters. "We hope this will stimulate the production of more research papers," said William R. Judd, former chairman on the subpanel of awards. "It's beneficial for researchers to have their work published as an award paper." There are four categories of awards: Basic Research, Applied Research, Case History, and Student Masters' Thesis. Approximately ten papers are nominated annually for each category; however, in some years awards are not made in all four categories. For instance, there were not enough case history nominations in 1983 for an award, but there were two equally outstanding recipients of the award for applied research. The winners of the 1983 research awards reflect the wide variety of professions involved with rock mechanics. They are introduced on the following pages by category, and accompanied by an abstract of the paper

THE almost universal acceptance of electrical logging by the petroleum industry calls for a critical examination of the physical bases of the common methods. This is particularly needed for the natural potential log. The conventional explanations are based on the phenomena of electrofiltration and electro-osmosis. However, experimental data show that they fail to give a basis that is quantitatively sound. Moreover, they lead to interpretations of details of electrical logs that are erroneous. It was found experimentally that when a plug of shale is placed in a chain of dissimilar electrolytes, a current flow results. Experiments on oil-well cores and fluids similar to those existing in wells show that potentials are set up which are in reasonable agreement with those encountered in electrical logging. Doubt- less other sources of potential are important but this explanation not only accounts for much of the potential but also clarifies some fairly familiar examples of misinterpretations.

RECORDS of crude oil in India date back for nearly 100 years, and modest attempts were made to develop the oilfields of Assam about 75 years ago. We have no record of production until 1892 when the fields near Digboi, Assam, yielded about 700 bbl. Since that time, the production of the Digboi fields has increased slowly, but steadily, and new fields have been opened at Badarpur, in Assam, and Khaur, in the Punjab, until the production in India in 1918 was about 293,700 bbl. and the possible production at the present time is approximately 300,000 bbl. per year. In the meantime, the English oil companies in India have been slowly adding to their holdings until they have taken up practically all of the promising territory that is readily accessible, and only about one-tenth of their properties has been touched by the drill. All the producing oilfields of India, and as far as we know all the prospective fields, are confined to areas underlain by rocks of Tertiary age. These rocks consist of more than 20,000 ft. of dark sandstones and shales, with the Nummulitic (Eocene) limestone at the base. In parts of Assam, the lower measures contain economic deposits of bituminous coal. In the Punjab, the upper part contains thick beds of conglomerate. Visible organic remains are rare; except in the limestone and the coal measures. In general, the hardness of the measures increases from top to bottom, but there is an alternation of relatively hard and soft beds throughout the whole series. The rocks are everywhere folded and, in some instances, severely faulted. The crests of eroded anticlines usually stand up as ranges of hills in which the individual ridges are underlain by the relatively' hard beds. Thus structural features are suggested and often clearly defined on the topographic maps.

Michigan produced 16,637,000 bbl. in 1937. This makes it a record year in the history of Michigan's oil industry. During the year 953 wells were completed; 779 within the limits of established fields and 174 wildcats; 616 new oil wells, 68 gas wells and 269 dry holes. Table 1 has been arranged in alphabetical order of field names. Production figures for 1936 have been corrected because December figures were estimated. In this year's summary, December production is based on actual reports. The Leaton and Mt. Pleasant fields have been re-defined. Mt. Pleasant production north of the south line of Denver township, Isabella County, has been included with Leaton in accordance with usual practice in Michigan. The locations of fields discovered since the last map was published1 are shown in Fig. 1. Activity during 1937 Buckeye Field.—The Buckeye field of Gladwin County was the center of greatest activity during the year and was responsible for the increase of 4,700,000 bbl. over the state total for 1936. Buckeye produced 6,428,-000 bbl. in 1937. In this field 328 producing wells were completed during the year—over one-half the oil producers drilled in the state. Buckeye was subject to voluntary and cooperative proration from April 1 to the end of the year. Other pools of the state were not prorated. The new production at Buckeye is from porous Dundee limestone of Devonian age, similar to the older fields. Other New Fields.—The Sherman field was second in importance as a source of new production, with a total of 1,532,000 bbl. Salem township, Allegan County, on the southwest side of the Michigan Basin, was developed during the year. Production at Salem is from the Traverse limestone at a depth of 1600 ft., and 52 producing wells have been drilled in this pool. Other active pools were Clayton and Adams townships, Arenac County. A mutispectral scanner (MSS) obtains remotely sensed data of the earth's surface in vector form, one vector element for each spectral sensing band of the MSS. Data generated by either airborne or orbiting MSS systems are organized in a lattice of scan lines and elements within scan lines. Each element, called a pixel, is represented by an observational vector and corresponds to a relatively small specific area on the ground. The total observations for a sensed scene frequently are in the millions and are composed of a number of populations, each representing a different land form category. Based on samples from the populations, the mean vectors, or spectral signatures, and the covariance matrices for the categories may be estimated. From these, an among category covariance matrix and a combined within category covariance matrix can be found. The total among category variance is the trace of the among category covariance matrix. Canonical analysis finds a linear transformation matrix such that the first transform variable accounts for the maximum possible part of the total among category variance. Similarly, the second transform variable, orthogonal to the first, accounts for the maximum possible part of the remainder of the total variance, and so on. Such transformation often results in over 95 percent of the total variance accounted for in the first three canonical variables, even though the initial number of spectral bands exceeded twenty. Transformation of bulk data into three canonical variates allows color map products to be developed by assigning each variable to a different basic color. Such color products are believed to be more useful for photo-interpretation than color products resulting from any combinations of three of the initial spectral bands.

The maximum segregation, as a function of alloy composition, is calculated for the aluminum-zinc system using the theory of inverse segregation based on the mechanism of volume contraction and interdendritic flow. The results show good agreement with experiments on aluminum-zinc ingots. The significance of the mass calculations of the segregation theory in discussing the metallography of the cast aluminum-zinc alloys is considered. THE occurrence of inverse segregation in rapidly cooled castings has been reported on previously by various authors, and several theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. It is now generally accepted that the mechanism of inverse segregation involves volume contraction on solidification followed by interdendritic flow of enriched residual liquid to the contraction volumes. This increases the concentration of the lower-melting-point constituents in regions of first solidification to above the mean concentration, which is con-

Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted-templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. Although a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map. Radial-line Control It is essential that the principle of radial-line control in the use of vertical aerial photographs be understood and accepted before any confidence in the slotted-templet method can be gained. A simple sketch and some enlargements showing the Empire Stale Building will serve to illustrate the cause of displacement of an image that is above the datum plane as recorded in the photograph. The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.
