DURING an investigation concerning the use of large nozzles for pouring of low-carbon rimming steels, the practical details of which were reported elsewhere, it was noticed that increases of nozzle sizes were generally followed by improvements of slab surface quality. It is the purpose of this note to present the data available and some tentative opinions about this phenomenon. The problem of correlating pouring rates with the metallurgical performance of steels is complicated by several factors. The two most important are; 1) Variations of the steel pouring rate throughout a pour, these being due to the nozzle erosion, which enlarges the bore area, and the dropping ferrostatic pressure in the ladle. The pouring rate is lowest towards the end of a heat when the ladle is nearly empty. 2) Variations in the ingot pouring time due to the different ingot weights poured. Consequently, the use of the average pouring rate of a heat may not be exact, but in large-scale production it is not practical to treat ingots separately according to their pouring rates. The variations of ingot weights and sizes may be overcome by considering the rate of rise of steel in the mold. Hence, the average rate of filling of molds throughout the pour of a heat, inches per second, will be used in this note. Every ingot rolled at Inland is rated at the blooming mills prior to hot machine scarfing as being good, fair, or poor for cracks, scabs, and checking. The latter term refers to the network of breaks or lines associated with overheating or burning in the soaking pits. It is also known that thin-skinned steel is prone to show this defect if the subsurface blowholes are exposed during reheating or rolling. The experiences with the surface quality of slabs rolled from ingots poured at different rates are presented in Fig. 1. The data represent nearly 11,000 ingots. MINE fires are always dangerous and are frequently accompanied by loss of life during the period of confusion which is apt to follow their discovery. In metal mines, fires may result from the accidental ignition of some combustible material, or they may be of spontaneous origin resulting from the rapid decomposition of sulphide. They occur frequently enough to demonstrate the need of some special equipment and a general plan for controlling them, in addition to measures for their prevention. Nearly all the large copper mines have had fires, and the methods of fighting them have been well described in recent papers, notably-by C. L. Berrien,1 R.. E. Tally,2 and others in discussion. The Copper Queen mine has many shafts, which are connected by underground workings. The deeper parts are ventilated by fans, but in the shallower portions natural ventilation through numerous connecting raises or shafts is sufficient. There have been several fires in the past few years, of which all are extinguished but one, and that is under control. These notes cover particularly the preparations that are being made-to check a new fire, partially or temporarily, and to facilitate the escape of workmen in the interval before a definite plan of fighting it can be established. A fire may occur in a shaft or station, or in some working father away. In case of fire in an upcast shaft, the gas would escape to the surface and the immediate result would probably not be dangerous to workmen, as they could escape by other shafts. In a downcast shaft, however, the gas would be distributed very rapidly throughout a large portion of the mine, and men might easily be trapped and asphyxiated. A fire in mine workings, drift, raise, or stope, would be dangerous in a degree, but the draft there is likely to be less strong than in a shaft and probably a smaller area would be invaded by the fire gases.

COMPARATIVELY little has been published relating practical experience with the control of the solid content of washery water systems that must be "closed." A "closed" system is one that for some reason may not be cleaned by the emission of any effluent of high solid content to be replaced by clean water in order to hold the solid content of the waste water within reasonable bounds for efficient washing. It is the purpose of this paper to describe practical experience with such a water system and to present data that it is hoped may be of some use to those who are faced with a similar problem. The washery clarification system described comprises three thickeners and three filters, and although it is admitted that each of the fields of water settling and thickening and filtration offers a wide scope for investigation, the authors are not attempting to present the answers to these problems but to set down the results of some experience along these lines, making no claims as to the ultimate solution of the problems in hand. The subject of water clarification has vast ramifications; for example, the science of flocculation as applied to water settling and filtering opens up fields of wide possibilities of which as yet little is known. A comparatively recent entry into the field of water treatment, which may offer possibilities of practical application, is the use of "wetting" agents such as "Aerosol." GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF WATER SYSTEM So that the reader may obtain a comprehensive picture of the factors concerned in the control of a closed water system, it is necessary to give a brief description of the washing plant that is serviced by the water system to be described in the following pages. As we are not primarily concerned with the washing plant in detail, only a brief description of the flow of coal as it relates to the water system will be given here. For a more detailed account of this type of washer, the reader is referred to earlier papers.1.2 The washer, which handles 0 to 4-in. raw coal (750 tons per hour) is an American Rheolaveur plant of two complements; the coarse coal or sealed discharge plant and the fine coal or free discharge plant. The sealed discharge plant (Fig. r) consists of twin 48-in. primary launders, each having two washing boxes, supplemented by one 32-in. rewash launder, which also has two washing boxes. "Push" water for washing and conveying coal in these launders is supplied from a constant-head tank under pressure head of 10 ½ ft. at the point of introduction at the feed end of the launder. This tank also supplies water for upward or vertical currents used in the Rheolaveur or washing boxes. Each box discharges into a sealed boot elevator (Fig. I).

THE matters I had intended to present to you ap-peared in the March 12 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal over the signature of George J. Young, so that although I should like to talk to you for about three hours on this subject, unfortunately it has all been done before. The subject originally sug-gested to me was the trend in mining methods. You will find that fully set forth much more clearly than I could hope to do, in Mr. Young's article, so that I shall confine my attention to a few points of interest in specific cases. You are undoubtedly familiar with the problem that was presented to the Miami Copper Co. when they had exhausted their so-called high-grade orebody. They had what appeared to be a large tonnage of material which their preliminary development work and such drilling as was done indicated contained one per cent copper or a-little over, and how to mine that profitably by underground methods was the question. It was somewhat complicated by the fact that the nature of the ground made them doubtful of their ability to cave it successfully. It was unquestionably harder ground than that of the more highly mineralized sections of the Miami and Inspiration- ore zone which had been mined. However, they had kept very accurate and complete records of past accomplishments and knew what they had to work with and what modifications with respect to costs would be necessary in order to solve this problem. Under the old method of working, they were extract-ing about 71/2 tons per man employed in the mining department; that is to say all labor, direct and indirect required to put the ore in the mill bins, and this, with the grade of ore which they had, resulted in a satis-factory financial outcome. Under their modified method now in use, they have raised that output per man to 29 tons per man shift. That is almost four times what they were doing with the old method.

The problem of rock behavior under concentrated loadings has been the subject of a number of studies in the past and has been receiving increasing attention by rock mechanics investigators in recent years. Its application covers various fields, but main interest in its solution has arisen in connection with the problems of drilling, bearing capacity, and rock testing. These widely different purposes and fields of interest probably have been one of the reasons why, in spite of the large amount of published experimental data and several theoretical studies, there are still many points which need further clarification. Another reason for this situation undoubtedly is due to the fact that the rock behavior in indentation is complicated by a great number of influencing factors. Experimental evidence shows that, depending on the rock type (mechanical properties, porosity), environment (ambient effective pressure, pore fluid, temperature), and the type of loading (indenter shape, initial embedment, load level, loading rate), the rock response to indentation may vary within very large limits. The widely different rock behavior has made it impossible up to now to treat the problem with a consistent single mathematical theory, but has required instead a series of simplified models covering only certain most important events in the failure sequence. As far as the theory of rock indentation is concerned, this chapter does not add much new information. Its main purpose is, however, to state the indentation problem in a general manner and to indicate which points need to be studied in more detail before its definite solution is attempted. Also, since excellent reviews of the state-of-art of rock indentation in drilling have recently been given,1-4 this will not be repeated here, and only references pertinent to the points of the problem under study will be quoted. In a recent communication, Smith and Wood described some results of 800°C compression/creep tests on WC-12 wt pct Co alloys in which plastic flow in the WC particles was believed to have occurred. The deformation observed in the WC particles was found to be a function of the rate of loading. The authors suggested that their data constituted support for the Ansell6-Lenel theory of yielding in dispersion-strengthened alloys. I do not agree with this interpretation since the Ansell-Lenel theory does not apply to the type of alloy in question. In this alloy, the dispersoid is present to the extent of about 80 vol pct. Even where there is no continuous skeleton, which apparently is the case in this instance, the simple fact is that nearly all of the load is carried elastically by the stronger material (wc).7 The constraint imposed upon the matrix, by virtue of the differences in Young's modulii and Poissons ratios, severely limits the stress level to which it may be subjected (assuming that the interfaces remain intact). If one allows for the constraint and then performs the same computation as in Smith and Wood, one finds that the stress on a WC particle is about 4 x 105 psi. This is about 21/2 times lower than the predicted fracture stress for WC. I would completely agree with the final paragraph of Smith and Wood, namely, that loading rate is of considerable significance. However. a more likely interpretation of their data is, I submit, that in the absence of stress relaxation (by secondary slip or climb) those WC-Co interfaces subjected to a normal tensile stress begin to fail. Once this occurs, the stress distribution will change rapidly and "premature" fracture of the WC then becomes quite probable. Tne serrated edges shown in Fig. 1 may very well be fine, interface fissures.

A Discussion of Mr. Hall's paper, read at the Washington Meeting, February, 1905. R. H. SWEETSER, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The recent work of furnace No. 1 of The Algoma Steel Co., at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, using for fuel, first all charcoal, then a mixture of charcoal and coke, and finally all coke, upsets the estimates given by Mr. Hall in the last two paragraphs of his interesting paper. Furnace No. 1 was built for a charcoal-furnace, and it was run on charcoal fuel from March 6 until July 9, 1905; then, for a week, a mix¬ture of charcoal and coke was used, and, since then, coke alone has been the only fuel. It is to be regretted that at no time, during the run on charcoal, was there enough charcoal on hand and " in sight'" to warrant blowing the furnace as hard as it should have been blown. During April and May the supply of charcoal limited the amount of blast to about 8,000 cu. ft. of air per min.; in June, to about 8,900 cubic feet. For a few days in July about 10,000 cu. ft. were blown, and then the maximum daily output, 173 tons (2,240 1b.), was reached. At all times the quality of the charcoal was poor, having been made from wood cut from three to four years before. Doubtless this furnace could have produced .200 tons of iron per day, even with this quality of charcoal, provided the supply had been sufficient; and with good charcoal I see no reason why it could not make as much iron per day as it has made with coke. During the one week of using a mixture of charcoal and coke, the changes in quantity of blast and composition of the slag followed each other so closely that no single condition could last long on the furnace. Potential differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electro-¦ chemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are moditied in measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles. Introduction The existence of potential differences in the surface of the earth has been known for some time, and their measurement has facilitated the discovery of geological discontinuities such as ore bodies. The technique of measurement has been well established.1-3 In measurements in oil wells, it has been found that the potential of shales with respect to some arbitrary reference is very nearly constant in any one well, at least below the zone to which meteoric water has gained access. Sandstones and some other types of sedimentary rocks have a difference of potential with respect to shale that is negative arid may attain a value of 200 millivolts or more. The difference of potential, as usually measured commercially with water in the hole, is distributed over about one foot vertically at the top and bottom contacts of the sandstones. The sharpness of the curve at the formation contacts can be improved by using a short electrode that is close to the wall of the hole' These potentials generally have been ascribed to the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. Potentials have been found, however, in wells in which no water was present. In the course of experiments in electrical logging in pennsylvania, carried out by the pennsylvania Geological Survey, observations were made of several phenomena that hitherto have not been described, to the author's knowledge, ill the published literature. The potential differences across the contacts of sandstone and shale are called ill this paper "natural potentials," as distinguished from the potentials caused by electroendosmosis (electrofiltration) and concentration differences, which will be discussed subsequently. As far as technology is concerned there has been no development in Bolivia during the year 1936, because the country, just emerging from the war with Paraguay, is only beginning to rebuild its economic foundations. Great steps, however, are being taken in order to secure a rapid and sound development of its oil resources, as follows: 1. The new Petroleum Law, which contemplates the problem of proration and conservation of natural resources, prohibiting the wasteful use of gas, and regulating the number of wells, their spacing and the permissible output per well, for each particular pool according to the conditions prevailing therein. 2. The creation of an official entity with the object of developing and exploiting a large petroliferous area. This entity has been called Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (Y.P.F.B.), and the region assigned to it is all the sub-andean zone, which is approximately one hundred miles wide and borders the eastern part of the Oriental Andean range, from Argentine to Peru. It is said that drilling will be started immediately in various localities. At the present time a wide geological survey of part of the area is being made in order to find out which regions offer the best possibilities of commercial development. Y.P.F.B. has been authorized by the Government to draw up contracts with private companies for the exploitation of limited zones. Production The only company that has been producing in the country in 1936 is the Standard Oil Company of Bolivia, and only from two of its fields: Camiri and Sanandita. New wells were not drilled. During the first nine months of the year 12,762,958 liters (80,275 bbl.) was produced, 34,985 bbl. from the Camiri field and 45,290 bbl. from the Sanandita field. Reports for October, November and December are not yet available. The total for the year 1935 was 25,978,737 liters (163,388 bbl.).

THERE is an ever-increasing demand for furnaces with controlled atmosphere, due to the large quantities of steel being used in the automotive industry, such as the .high-chromium stainless irons, the 18 Cr, 8 Ni stainless iron and low-carbon steel sheets. The difficulties involved in the annealing of such materials, if they are to be kept absolutely free from oxidation, are many. It is possible to bright-anneal these steels in small laboratory hydrogen furnaces, using specially purified hydrogen and taking some additional precautions. In the first place, the insulation, usually of alumina or magnesia, holds small amounts of water vapor, which it is almost impossible to remove completely. Secondly, there is always condensation of water vapor in the cooling chambers of such furnaces, and with the continuous circulation of the hydrogen gas in the furnace, the water vapor is carried from the cooling chamber back into the heating chamber. This water vapor oxidizes the charge. Lastly, the supply of moisture is made sure by the diffusion of small amounts of air from the atmosphere into the furnace against the pressure of the hydrogen. The oxygen combines with the hydrogen and forms more water. Under such conditions there is, little gained by using specially purified gas, because it becomes contaminated after reaching the furnace.

The year 1944 marks the eightieth anniversary of the discovery of petroleum by drilling in New York State. It was in 1864 that a half dozen shallow wells were drilled at Limestone in Cattaraugus County, in a region that now forms the northern extension of the 82,000-acre Bradford pool. These early wells found oil, but not in paying quantities. They did, however, attract attention to the district and were a factor in the development of the still active Bradford pool of Pennsylvania and New York. During 1943, the production of petroleum in New York amounted to 5,029,000 bbl. This represents a decrease over the previous year, in which 5,421,000 bbl. was produced. The flush production for the New York fields occurred in the early eighties shortly after the discovery of oil in the Richburg pool of Allegany County. During the flush period, production was in excess of five million barrels annually. By 1887, however, the output had decreased to an amount only slightly more than two million barrels, and through the early years of the present century the annual total was often less than one million barrels. Flooding of the oil sands for increasing productioil was made legal in 1919, and in 1927 the output once more reached the two million mark. Two years later it had increased to over three million barrels. In Table r is shown production since 1935, in which year for the first time the output under flooding methods was in excess of four million barrels. From this table, it is evident that oil production in New 'I'ork is rather well stabilized, and since most of the oil is obtained by the flooding, or water-drive, method, with little or no prospect of discovery of new oil territory, rapid changes in yield from year to year are not to be expected. In thickness, the oil sands have a maximum of about 50 ft., and by means oi flooding may produce 10 to 12 thousand barrels an acre and proportional amounts for thinner sands. In some cases, floods have been developed in sands only 12 ft. thick. Under good flooding conditions a yield of 2000 bbl. an acre is about the lower limit at which oil can bc produced at the present price of $3.00 a barrel. The average cost for the physical development ol a lease, not including the cost ol the lease itself, is $5000 an acre. Since several months must intervene before the flood begins to act on the oil wells, and a year or more is required to bring thc wells to maximum daily production, it is evident that a considerable interval occurs before maximum returns are realized. Long-distance transportation of solids by hydraulic pipelines holds promise of great economic benefits. In most mineral processing plants today, moving of solids in slurry-form by pipeline is commonplace. Yet in spite of this, the method is slow in being adopted on a broad scale for moving solids over distances of many miles. This is especially surprising in view of the successful realization of two daring ventures in long-distance solids pipelines in this nation within the last five years. One is the 72-mile long, 6-in. diam. pipeline of the American Gilsonite Co. which has been satisfactorily transporting 700 tpd of gilsonite from the mine at Bonanza, Utah, to the processing plant at Grand Junction, Colo., since April 1957. The other is the 108-mile long, 10-in. pipeline of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., which has been transporting about 4000 tpd of finely crushed coal from the mine at Cadiz, Ohio, to the Eastlake Power Plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. since January 1958.

There was less activity in the petroleum industry in Indiana in 1933 than in previous years, owing largely to adverse market conditions. The only development of any consequence was for oil in Perry and Vander-burgh counties in southwestern Indiana, a few gas wells being brought in in Jay County in northeastern Indiana. Indications are that there will be more activity in southwestern Indiana in 1934. Little change may be expected in northeastern Indiana. One hundred and sixty wells were drilled in Indiana in 1933, of which 57 were dry, 44 produced oil, 38 produced gas and 21 either were not completed or information on them was lacking. There were 153 wells abandoned and plugged in 1933, as compared to 205 in 1932. Southwestern Indiana This area centers about Gibson County and is the principal source of oil and gas production in the state. Production is from the Lower Pennsylvanian and Upper Mississippian formations. Oil production for 1932 was approximately 847,000 bbl. and for 1933 was 804,000 bbl. Gas production for 1933 was 942,000,000 cubic feet. The Siosi field, in southwestern Vigo County and northwestern Sullivan County, discovered six years ago, produced approximately 244,000 bbl. in 1932 and 223,000 bbl. in 1933. Production is from Devonian and Silurian formations. The oil is high gravity, but contains considerable sulfur. The Shelburn and other small pools in central Sullivan County produced approximately 68,000 bbl. in 1932 and 2,000 bbl. less in 1933. Production is from one or more of five horizons in the Pottsville and is obtained at 600 to 800 ft. This area also produces approximately 19,000,000 cu. ft. of gas a year, supplying the city of Sullivan. The field is over 20 years old. The Gibson-Pike County area, made up of many small pools, including several in southern Knox and southwestern Daviess counties, produced approximately 486,000 bbl. in 1932 and 450,000 bbl. in 1933. Park City, Utah, elevation 7200 ft., is on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains about 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, elevation 4200 ft. The town and surrounding mining district are served by two railroads: one, 28 miles long, is a branch of the Union Pacific R. R. and joins the main line at Echo; the other, 35 miles long, connects with the main line of the Denver & Rio Grande R. R. at Salt Lake City. The main shaft and important mine buildings, elevation about 8200 ft., of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co. are 11/2 miles by road to the southwest of Park City, and are near the head of Woodside Gulch. The property of this company is a consolidation of several groups of mining claims, and comprises an area that is roughly 4 miles long by 1 mile wide, the long axis of which has a N. 55" E. bearing. Geology A general geologic section through the property shows a basal formation of gray quartzite, called the Weber quartzite, above which seems to lie conformably the Park City formation. Both beds are of Carboniferous age. The Park City strata consist of a number of beds of limestone, with intercalated beds of quartzite, sandstone, and shale. The exact thickness is difficult to determine, but is apparently between 650 and 850 ft. Above the Park City beds and conformable with them lie the Woodside Shales. These thinly bedded fine-grained shales, about 1000 ft. in the thickness, are of no economic importance. They are overlain conformably by the Thaynes formation, which has about the same thickness and is composed of beds of limestone, sandstone, and shale. A thin bed of shale divides the formation into an upper and a lower part; the upper part contains more lime than the lower part. The Woodside shales and the Thaynes formation are of Triassic age. All the beds dip northwest, the dip is usually from 20" to 30°, but may be as great as 40°. In places, intrusions of diorite porphyry have deformed the beds. The creep rate of polycrystalline tin was studied as a function of temperature and stress in constant stress experiments. The temperature was varied from room temperature to almost the melting point of tin. Activation energies were calculated from tests run at the same stress. It was found that on a log creep rate vs inverse temperature plot the experimental points did not fall on one straight line but on a line which changed its slope in the 90° to 160°C region. Two activation energies for the creep of tin can be calculated from the data: a value around 26,000 cal per mol at high temperatures and a value around 11,000 cal per mot at low temperatures. It is suggested that the discrepancies between the creep activation energies and those of self-diffusion can be accounted for if self-diffusion takes place predominately by Zener's ring mechanism rather than through vacancy or interstitial movement. SHERBY, Orr, and Dorn' and Dorn' have recently reviewed some of the data on high temperature creep of metals. -The data show that the activation energy of high temperature creep is approximately equal to the activation energy of self-diffusion. This same correlation has also been successfully made between the activation energy of grain boundary relaxation and that of self-diffusion.3,4 The metal tin does not fit into this simple picture. Its activation energies of self-diffusion differ appreciably from that of grain boundary relaxation and of creep. Fensham,5 from a precisely performed experiment, has determined that the activation energies of self-diffusion of tin are 10,500 and 5,900 cal per mol along the C and A axes, respectively. There are two energies because of the anisotropic nature of tin. Rotherham, Smith, and Greenough6 have shown that the grain boundary relaxation activation energy is 19,000 cal per mol (measurements made from room temperature to 100°C). Puttick and King7 found the same activation energy for grain boundary slip in bicrystals of tin (180° to 225°C region). Until recently, there was no high temperature large strain creep data on tin suitable for activation energy calculations. At rather small strains (up to 0.01), Tyte8 had made a series of measurements on tin from which activation energies can be calculated. In Fig. 1 are plotted some of his data on a log creep rate vs inverse temperature graph. It can be seen that Tyte's work indicates that at a relatively low temperature the activation energy is around 7,400 cal per mol but at higher temperatures the activation energy increases. The principal interest in the oil situation in Colombia during the year centered around the enactment of the new petroleum law and the applications for concessions subsequently made by various interests. The year was a comparatively uneventful one from the standpoint of actual operations of drilling and development. There was a falling off both in exploratory work and in the development of producing properties; and as a result of curtailment of production, the output of oil from the country dropped to the lowest level since the completion of the looping of the Andian pipe line to the coast in 1927. Legislation Law No. 371 of 1931, with its Regulatory Decree No. 1270, was enacted during the year and marked Colombia's attempt to encourage more extensive exploration and development of the prospective oil resources of the country. Some of the outstanding provisions of the law are as follows: Tracts may be acquired by a concessionnaire directly and by transfer ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 hectares, except in certain reserved territories east of the summit of the eastern cordilleras where the maximum is increased to 200,000 ha. A security deposit of $1 per hectare, minimum $25,000, is required on government grants, and is returned to the concessionnaire only upon the fulfillment of stipulated terms of the law. Rentals, increasing progressively from 10c per hectare per year the first two years to 50c per hectare the sixth year, are required up to the start of the production period (beginning of development). The concession terminates 30 years after the beginning of the production period and can be extended for 10 years more at the option of the contractor. Wells must be produced at no less than 25 per cent of their maximum capacity. Royalties on oil from national lands vary from 2 to 11 per cent of the gross product, depending on the distance of the concession from the port of loading. Prior to 1939 the bulk of the magnesium metal produced outside of the united Stater was extracted directly from the ore and ifi the United States from magnesium chloride obtained as a by-product from the treatment of natural brines. A typical brine is one containing about 0.25 to 0.75 per cent bromine, 11 to 14 per cent sodium chloride, 9 to 11 per cent calcium chloride and 3 to 10 per cent magnesium chloride. The state of Nevada was known to possess large deposits of magnesite ore (MgCOs, the carbonate of magnesium), in Gabbs Valley, near Luning, approximately 350 miles north of Boulder Dam. Deposits mined in Europe were supplying magnesite giving 97 per cent MgCOs with about I per cent each of silica, lime and oxides of iron and aluminum. parts of the Luning de-posits Were almost equally rich, and the general average was of sufficiently high grade for production of magnesium. power to the amount of 200,000 kw. was available immediately from Boulder Dam, and water from Lake Mead, and it was this combination of available power, water, and ore that led to the initial proposal to erect a magnesium reduction plant in southern Nevada to reduce the magnesite ores from Gabbs. The extraction of magnesium metal from these magnesite deposits had been considered by the I. G. Farbenindustrie of Germany as far back as 1929. Mine and Oxide Plant The mine and oxide plant of Basic Magnesium Incorporated are perched upon the oride slope of the Paradise Range, at an altitude of 5000 ft., overlooking the 30 mile desert panorama of Gabbs Valley, Nevada. , Ore Occurrence The Gabbs magnesite ores occur in a thick series of flat, westerly dipping dolomites of Upper Triassic age. The mag-"esite bodies are exposed in steep canyon "areas encircling the north and east edges of a northerly projecting tongue of a roughly elliptical stock of granodiorite, which intrudes the dolomite. The magnesite mineralization is considered to be a a of calcium by magnesium through the agency of hydro-thermal solutions associated with the intrusion of the granodiorite. The ore bodies are of very irregular shape and distribution. Incomplete evidence points to deep pipelike replacement shapes that mushroom out erratically at various elevations. A wide latitude in the degree of magnesium replacement is reflected in a variance of quality from pure magnesite to magnesitic dolomite. The, ore is a massive crystalline mag-nesite. Though some differences in characteristics occur between ore bodies, in general the ore is a medium-grained carbonate varying in color from white, through all shades of gray, to black.
