7.4-1. Introduction. Ever since explosives were discovered and developed for mining purposes, there has existed the problem of determining what effect the air and ground vibrations resulting from blasting have on structures of various types. This problem is especially acute for surface operations such as open pit mines, quarries, and construction projects that are in the proximity of residential districts, scientific laboratories, or other vibration-sensitive structures. Because the general public is directly involved in the blasting vibration problem, it has been of major concern to local, state, and federal governments, as well as to mining and construction companies, explosive manufacturers, insurance companies, and scientific investigators. Consequently, many investigations have been conducted, both in this country and abroad, on the effects of air and ground vibration on residential and other structures. E. H. Rockwell made some of the first studies in this country on the vibrations produced by blasting and the effect that these vibrations have on structures (18). In his publications, he stressed the need for measuring the vibrations from quarry blasting in order to establish the level of vibration as a function of charge size and distance. The concept of a damage criterion for structures was developed shortly thereafter, and a displacement of less than 0.03 in. was considered safe. During the period from 1939-1942, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive investigation on the problem of seismic effects of quarry blasting. This work, summarized in Bulletin 442 (20) was the first major effort for establishing damage criteria for residential structures based on experimental data. An acceleration of less than 0.1 g was considered safe, 0.1 to 1.0 g was caution, and greater than 1.0 g was damage. This work

THE mining .district is located in the northeasterly part of Nevada, between the Jarbidge River on the west and the East Fork of the Jarbidge on the east. The northern boundary of the district is but a few miles south of the Idaho state line-the gold-bearing area extending from this point south, for 5 or 6 miles. The Jarbidge Mountains, in which the ore deposits occur, range from 5000 to 11,000 ft. in elevation, the most important mines being situated about 7000 ft. or higher. The town of Jarbidge lies along the Jarbidge River and is reached by stage from Rogerson, Ida., the nearest railroad point. During the summer months, the camp may be entered from the south by way of Deeth, Nev., but no regular transportation facilities are available over this route. HISTORY The mineral deposits were not discovered until 1909, when D. A. Bourne, panning along the river bank, found gold in the gravel at the mouth of a small stream flowing into the Jarbidge. He prospected in the vicinity of this stream, later known as Bourne Gulch, and shortly after located the North Star claims. During the following spring and summer (1910), the camp of Jarbidge grew from nothing to a town of 2000 people and the hills surrounding it were practically all taken up by mining claims. Most of the work done during. the first year or two consisted of trenching and open-cut prospecting. Tunneling was started on a number of claims and many veins were uncovered. Mills were built and operated on a few properties, notably the Pavlak and the North Star. These ran only a few months, however, when they were closed down because of extraction and financial difficulties.

In recent years, increased attention is being paid to the application of oil-agglomeration technique for (a) improved recovery of low- ash clean coal, (b) effective beneficiation of low-grade coking coals and (c) removal of pyrite sulphur from high-sulphur coals. In this technique, which has been proved to be more effective than convention- al froth-flotation, advantage is taken of the oleo-philic nature of finely ground coal to separate it under controlled conditions from the associated minerals which are hydrophilic in nature. Unlike froth- flotation, no aeration is needed in the process and the concentrates which are obtained in the form of agglomerates or micro-pellets have easier dewatering characteristics. Optimization of operating variables in treating individual raw feed is a pre-requisite for the successful application of this process. A 10 gram batch unit was employed in the present test series. This paper presents - results from these investigations on such operating variables as (i) size of coal, (ii) amount of oil used, (iii) time of stirring, (iv) rate of stirring, (v) solid content in slurry and (vi) effect of conditioning.

This investigation utilizes three dimensional photo-elastic techniques to determine the stress distributions in the pillars and the roof of a room and pillar mine model. Castolite plastic was used for the construction of the model in which a stress pattern was developed by the stress freezing process. Analysis of the stress pattern was accomplished by observation of points in slices from the model with a polariscope and solving the data thus obtained by the shear-difference method. Slices through the centerline, edge of pillar and centerline of span were investigated. The results of this work provide information on the overall stress distribution in points of stress concentration in compression, shear and tension, show relative magnitude of stress throughout the model and indicate directions of the most important stress values. A generalized roof bolt pattern is developed for room and pillar mines based on the stress distribution. A digital computer was used in the reduction of data and proved to be extremely useful for investigation of this type. Underground excavations disturb the equilibrium of the earth's crust and a core of fracture, or altered stress distributions exists around the openings. This fact is well known by mining operators and investigators in the rock mechanics field. Analysis of the stress distribution in the areas around mine workings is a most difficult problem and one which has no simple and direct solution. Some of the approaches used by investigators in attempts to study stress distribution around mine openings involve mathematical analysis, photoelastic techniques, statistical analysis, model studies on brittle materials and observation of fracture patterns. Models involving imbedded strain gauges, gelatin models using imbedded strings to show internal movement, and many other unique laboratory techniques are employed. Work is also being done in mining operations where load cells, strain gauges, photostress material, convergence plugs, dynamic plugs, etc., are used to measure strain which can in turn be used to obtain stress. Some of these devices measure strain from which stress may be derived. All approaches to the solution of stress distribution are hampered by the fact that the earth is not a homogeneous, isotropic and elastic media. Geologic faults, fractures, bedding planes, vugs, variations in material composition, variations in grain size and structure, etc., make it extremely difficult to obtain results which can be universally applied to mining operations. The purpose of this investigation will be to demonstrate the use of three-dimensional photoelastic techniques to obtain the stress distribution in the pillars and roof of a room and pillar mining operation. This method utilizes full analysis of interior points, and thus it may be that small tensile or shear stresses found in the investigation will prove to be of greater significance than the more obvious points of stress concentration found by two-dimensional techniques. A digital computer was employed to simplify and to shorten the time necessary to obtain final results. Application of the computer to problems of this type may enable future investigators to attempt more elaborate analyses than have been previously considered feasible. THEORY Three Dimensional Stress Analysis-Shear Difference Solution:' Photoelastic studies are based on the fact that an optically isotropic transparent solid becomes optically anisotropic when subjected to forced deformation; the degree of optical anisotropy being proportional to the deformation of the material. There are two fundamental laws which govern photoelasticity: 1) Light is polarized in the directions of the principal stress axes, and is transmitted only on planes of principal stress. 2) The difference in principal stresses is proportional to the difference in the indices of refraction along the planes of principal stress. THE natural effect of large size should be to increase segrega¬tion. I have previously pointed' to the excessive segregation in many large ingots as tending to confirm this, but I have shown that in case of ingots less than 16 in. square this expected effect of ingot-size is liable to masked by that of other variables. Under these conditions we should expect that if large ingot-size really does tend to increase segregation, this effect would be shown by taking the average of large numbers of cases, so that the effects of these other variables might off-set and cancel each other.

The importance of recognizing vibration problems during the plant design stage is emphasized in this paper. Often an experienced designer can recommend what type of support to use and how to tune the structure. However, obtaining sufficient information is a serious problem dealing with vibration. Vibration is a well known phenomena which, simply and generally, can be defined as a periodic motion. It is experienced in nature as caused by eerth- quake, wind, or ocean waves, and must be dealt with in the design of structure or ships. It must be realized that wherever there are moving or rotating elements, it is possible that unbalanced forces may induce vibration in the elements themselves, in adjacent parts, or in the supporting structure. Under certain circumstances, vibration will destroy machines or structures quickly and totally. The most widely known case is the total collapse of the Tacoma bridge when subjected to a wind of only 42 mph. Failures due to vibration of machines and/or their supports may occur in industrial plants where heavy equipment employed in the process must be supported and several machines are combined in close proximity. The Butte, Anaconda & Pacific electrification is of peculiar interest, in an incidental way, to the entire mining fraternity, and especially the engineering branch, not only in this great Northwest country but throughout the entire Western mining country, which is rich in minerals and water power. It is probably fair to say that the prime object of mining and smelting engineering is to reduce the cost of production, and in the case in hand the relative location of mines and smelter brings the cost of transportation of ore to the front. While some might assign this item to the railway people, it is inseparably a part and parcel of the general scheme of the production of metal from the ore. In considering the electrification of the B., A. & P. railway the mining and smelting engineer, above all, wants to know what saving will be effected by the change in motive power. Unfortunately the new power has been in use during a very limited period and on the Smelter Hill section of the road only, and no reliable data, from actual service conditions, can be obtained until the entire electrified section has been in service for a reasonable length of time. Any remarks on this subject at the present time, therefore, must of necessity be general in nature and more or less descriptive. The railway, electrical and mining worlds and the country in general are indebted to the B., A. & P. railway for the pioneer work it is now doing, as it undoubtedly marks the beginning of the electrification, within the comparatively near future, of all transcontinental roads between the Missouri river and the Pacific coast. Together with this goes the development of an untold wealth in water power and all natural resources within the same territory. For the first time in the history of electric railway work, in this country, direct current at a potential of 2,400 volts is being used. With this potential there is a great saving in transmission of energy to the locomotives and there are only two substations, one at either end and 26 miles apart, for supplying the power for the movement of trains of heavy tonnage over the main line and for switching movements at terminal and intermediate yards, and comparatively little feeder copper is required.

The unstable metal market during 1949, with resulting lower metal prices, has focused every mine operator's attention on the problem of reducing operating costs. Improvement in mining methods, use of modern mechanical mining equipment, and increasing the efficiency of the labor force are the tools with which we will have to work. Careful planning is necessary to coordinate all phases so that no one phase is overdone. A mine may become over-mechanized if, for instance, capital charges against new equipment exceed the savings in labor costs, or where a large enough tonnage is not produced. The cooperation of labor is essential to any mechanization program. There have been too many instances where mechanization and improvements have done nothing more than make up for a decrease in labor efficiency, thus bringing the production of labor back to its old standard. The operator has gained little and labor has gained only a "softer job." In any mechanization program there are gains to be had by both the operator and labor. By the efficient application of modern equipment and improved mining methods the operator should gain by decreased costs, and labor may profit by receiving a share of these decreased costs.

Some time ago, a prominent engineer asked a representative of the firebrick industry to prepare a comprehensive paper on blast-furnace refractories. It was to have been the purpose of this paper to gather practical experiences from widely different sources, in the hope of determining what kind or kinds of firebrick were best adapted for certain uses. This engineer sent questionnaires to the large consumers of blast-furrace linings and stovebrick and received very detailed replies as to their experiences. These replies are conflicting, but, having been turned over to the writer, form the basis of this attempt to meet the request. Because of the impossibility of making final recommendations at this time, a few of the more interesting and commonly known methods of studying refractories are also discussed, as well as the more recent developments in this field. The first reply to the questionnaire stated that good service was being secured from the linings. This satisfactory condition was attributed to the use of a very good distributor. The writer believed that manufacturers try to and do produce a good product and that the proper handling of equipment is of the utmost importance, if good results are to be secured. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The second reply stated that good life was secured from the furnace linings, but that the writer had had soft-fired stovebrick crumble and, for that reason, preferred a hard-fired product for use in this position. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The third reply stated that firebrick had crumbled from the mantle up; the cause was not known. The fourth reply stated that the stove linings were satisfactory. Hand-made furnace linings failed after.4 years' service so a steam-pressed lining- was installed which was still good after 4 years of service. Consequently, a second steam-pressed lining was installed but this disintegrated at the top after the furnace had been in blast 7 months. The firebrick manufacturer attributed this failure to the expansion of iron blocks that had been installed at the stock line to prevent erosion. The fifth reply stated that the present "hard-burned" hand-made furnace lining had worn away very uniformly to the depth of only 5 in.

The frequency of bubble formation is measured for oils from the East Texas field and the Slaughter field in cores from these fields. East Texas oil was also tested in a Slaughter core. The data checked previous results in that a definite supersatrtration may exist without the formation of bubb1es in periods of observation totaling 158 hours. Measured frequencies varied from zero at supersaturations below 14 psi to 3.1 bubbles/sec/ cu ft of rock at 40 psi supersaturation INTRODUCTION The formation of bubbles is essential in a solution gas-drive reservoir in the displacement of oil. In formations where the basic pore structure consists of fine pores or fractures connected to larger pores or crevices, bubble formation in the fine pores may be the most effective means by which the oil may be displaced, even if secondary methods are applied. The most efficient oil displacement would occur where at least one bubble would form in every pore. As the pressure decreased, the bubbles would expand, due to the gas diffusing into the bubbles, and displace the oil toward the lower pressure area around the wellbore. Kennedy and Olson' have shown that the total number of bubbles formed in a reservoir is primarily dependent upon the rate of pressure drop, the rate of diffusion of gas through oil, and surface area of the rock. The surface tension of the liquid and other characteristics of the rock may also exert an important effect, which would give a different frequency to different rocks and oils and various combinations of different rocks and oils. The purpose of this paper is to present frequency measurements on two rocks and two oils. A hydrocarbon liquid is at equilibrium with gas when it contains the maximum volume of gas in solution that it can have at the prevailing temperature and pressure. If the temperature is maintained constant and the pressure is reduced below the equilibrium pressure, the liquid is supersaturated to the extent of the difference in the two pressures until the gas comes out of solution as a free phase. As shown by previous work, and confirmed in the present investigation, the number of bubbles formed per second increases with an increase in supersaturation. Kennedy and Olson showed that a tenfold increase in the rate of pressure decline resulted in a tenfold increase in the number of bubbles formed per cubic foot of reservoir rock, e.g., for decline rates of 0.1, 1, and 10 psi/day, the number of bubbles formed per cubic foot would be 40, 400, and 4,000, respectively. For another hypothetical system, Stewart, Hunt, and Berry' estimated that for pressure declines of 0.1, 1, and 10 psi/day, the number of bubbles formed would be approximately 10, 100, and 1,000 cu ft of reservoir rock. Their value of bubbles formed is lower than given by Kennedy and Olson; however, the order of magnitude agreed satisfactorily. The rate of diffusion will also affect the number of bubbles formed. If the diffusion coefficient is high, the gas in solution in the oil surrounding a single bubble will tend to diffuse into the bubble rather than forming other bubbles. On the other hand, the formation of more bubbles will tend to occur if the diffusion coefficient is very low. In his thesis dated Aug., 1953, Wood" reports on the frequency of bubble formation in a system consisting of oil and rock from the Rangely field. In the present work, the apparatus of Wood was redesigned to allow greater precision, especially at low supersaturations, where bubble growth is slower, and detection is more difficult.

INTRODUCTION Idarado Mining Company, a subsidiary of Newrnont Mining Corporation, is situated high in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. Portals, offices and surface plants are located near the towns of Ouray and Telluride at elevations ranging from 9,000 to 12,000 feet. The Ouray portion of the development was initiated in 1943. Upon completion in 1945 of a 250-ton mill, processing of development ores containing copper, lead and zinc was undertaken; thus, serving as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. These facilities were subsequently enlarged and utilized until 1956. Meanwhile, in 1953 Idarado had acquired The Telluride Mines Company, 62 miles distant by highway; however, only six miles via a network of tunnels which eventually linked the two workings. Extensive underground development and increased ore production necessitated reconstruction and expansion of the milling plant. The facility was designed to accomodate processing of 1700 tons of ore daily. This goal was achieved and it represents the current daily output. Gardner I?. Williams, authority on diamond mining, died at San Francisco, Cal., on Aug. 22, after an illness of nearly a year. Mr. Williams, who was in his eighty-first year, was born in Saginaw, Mich. He was graduated from the University of California in 1865, and afterward took a course at the Freiberg Mining Academy in Saxony. He was awarded the degree of LII. D. by the University of California in 1910, and Doctor of Engineering by the University of Michigan in 1917. correlation of waters and identification of mixtures of two and three waters is important in secondary recovery evaluation studies and studies involving underground movement of waters. The importance of such studies suggests the need for a method to correlate a great number of water analyses to accurately identify and improve the understanding of mixtures of waters. Geochemical analyses of waters furnish a quantitative measure of each of the ions present in a water. Table L shows a portion of the data on many oilfield water analysis report forms in use today. Under "parts per million" are listed the quantitative amounts of each ion in milligrams per liter. Following the work of Stabler' and Palmer", some laboratories have reported additional data to indicate the reaction capacity, or reacting value of each ion. Table I lists data under two subheads for the "reacting value". Under the first subhead, the reacting value is reported in gram equivalents per million, hereinafter called equivalents per million. This value is determined by multiplying milligrams per liter of the ion by a factor equal to the reciprocal of the equivalent weight of the ion. Under the second subhead (per cent) is listed the percentage of each ion based on the total equivalents per million. Sodium is not usually an analyzed value in routine analyses, but is determined by the difference between total negative equivalent per million values and the sum of all of positive ion values for which analyses were made. This difference is reported as sodium, hereafter labelled "sodium". On this basis, the subtotals of the equivalent per million and per cent reacting values of the positive and negative ions are equal. CORRELATION OF WATER ANALYSES DATA Previously reported methods for correlating oilfield waters have used part of the data in Table 1, and can be classified into two categories. Correlation by Chemical Character Correlation methods using the chemical character of waters, as represented by the per cent reacting values of the ionic constituents, have been used by Palmer2 and Tickell. These methods have the limitation of neglecting the ionic concentration of the waters. This limitation can be serious in areas where waters have the same chemical character, but differ in concentration. Correlation by Concentration of the Ionic Constituents The Reistle' and the Stiff methods use the ionic concentration in parts per million and equivalents per million. These methods are effective in differentiating waters of similar chemical character and varying concentration, as in the highly saline waters of the Mid-Continent area. These methods have the disadvantage that they correlate waters by comparing many graphs of individual water analyses to determine the similarity to, or the variance from "type" waters. PROPOSED METHOD OF CORRELATING WATER ANALYSES DATA Correlation graphs presented in Fig. 1 represent water analyses data as points to facilitate the correlation of waters.
