Drilling operations in Nebraska during 1943 were reduced to approximately two thirds of the 1942 number. Twenty-seven wells were completed during 1943 and five wells were drilling at the close of the year. Eight of the completions, in provcn fields, were producers. The operations were distributed throughout the state as follows: eleven in Richardson County, four each in Buffalo and Harlan Counties, three in Furnas County, and single operations in Antelope, Butler, Dakota, Dawes, Gage, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Scotts Bluff and Sherman Counties. Because of the necessity for taking regularly occurring open-flow tests in prorated high-pressure oil fields, much gas is turned to atmosphere by way of vertical vent lines leading away from the oil and gas separator. In the past, measurement of such gas has been accomplished by several methods, usually by use of the open-flow Pitot tube. The use of the closed-flow Pitot tube has been avoided apparently chiefly because the ordinary vent-line hook-up makes it necessary to apply the instrument closer to a bend, valve, or obstruction in the pipe than is recommended by rules of good practice. The many advantages that would result from the application of the closed-flow Pitot tube prompted investigation of the actual effect upon quantity rate of flow measurements computed from data obtained with the tube in a normal working position, which is closer to the tee at the base of the vent riser than is usually considered as giving highly accurate results. An effort Was first made to compare the results thus obtained to those under ideal conditions and at high velocities To make this comparison, knowledge of the characteristics of gas flowing at very high velocities is essential. Research for such information indicated that little or no work had been done that would give data necessary for such a comparison, therefore the problem was changed to a test designed to determine the relationship between quantity rates of flow as measured by an orifice meter and a Pitot tube placed at the center of a pipe eight diameters from a tee or ell at the base of a vent riser, through which gas is flowing under low pressures at very high velocities. To determine this relationship, a series of tests was run on a number of 8-in. iron-pipe vent riser., in which the Pitot tube data were taken at the position as stated above. Gas from a wet-gas gathering system was passed through an orifice meter setting and thence to atmosphere by way of the vents. Data were taken simultaneously from the orifice meter and Pitot tube from which computations for comparisons were made. The actual method of comparison is discussed later in this paper. WHETHER the valuable components in a mineral deposit can be mined and separated from the worthless matrix, processed, and marketed depends not only upon the natural factors and the physical and chemical techniques, but also upon many extrinsic factors relevant to the economics of the business of exploring, developing, and producing minerals. To meet a need for proper coverage of this specialized field of economics, the Mineral Economics Div. of the AIME has developed a plan for assembling a volume setting forth important factors affecting mineral enterprises other than those that lend themselves to solution through science or technology. The program has been considered by the Institute's Directors and they have approved it, subject to a decision of the Mineral Economics Div. to carry it out.*

For many years the water pressure test has been used as a normal procedure to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of rock masses and discontinuities. Although the test has given evidence of problematic areas, the nature of flow and the so called equivalent permeability are seldom seriously affected by the testing tecnique. In order to improve the information on these points the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas de São Paulo - IPT, has developed an extensive program at laboratory and field research on the hydraulics at rock fractures. This paper summarizes the main items related to this research. Is shows that with only small improvements on field tests and some support of laboratory conductivity tests on natural rock joints it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the nature of flow in fractures, improve flow predictions and estimate the opening and hydraulic conductivity, as well as the transmissivity of natural joints or rock discontinuities.

During the past 20 years the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. and the General Electric Co. have collected a valuable library of some 9000 volumes on electricity. The collection was intended especially for use in patent searches and is particularly rich in patent material. Files of all the principal patents relating to electric light acid power issued by America, England, France and Germany, are present, together with copies of the patents owned or controlled by the two companies. Another feature, and one of unusual value, is a series of volumes containing the records of the important adjudicated patent cases of these companies and their predecessors during the past 25 years, and forming a storehouse of electrical history. There are also files of about 100 electrical periodicals. It is a pleasure to announce that this collection has now been presented by the owners to the Engineering Societies Library. In 1944, in the Texas Panhandle, 245 oil wells were drilled with a total daily initial production of 32,886 bbl., representing an average initial production of 134 bbl, per well. This was an increase over 1943 of 121 wells drilled, and an increased initial production of 13,861 barrels. On Dec. 31, 1944, the field was operating on an allowable of 113,567 bbl. per day, but actually was producing 85,539 bbl. per day from the 5901 oil wells. The tota1 production for the year was 33,439,436 bbl., bringing the cumulative total to 5.04,537,048 barrels. I have used for about two years, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Company, a rapid method for the determination of phosphorus in iron, steel, and ores, which possesses one or two features sufficiently novel to warrant description. In general, it is the method described by Mr. Benjamin B. Wright (Transactions, vol. x., p. 197), involving the precipitation of the phosphorus by means of molybdate solution, and its estimation in the yellow precipitate by reduction of the molybdic acid, and titration of the resulting oxide with a standardized permanganate solution, according to the principles laid down by Werncke (Fres, Zeit., vol. xiv., p. 1). In the use of this method, I had difficulty at first in obtaining a yellow precipitate of reasonably uniform composition. It is a well-known fact that, to secure this result, the conditions of precipitation must not vary. The principal condition is temperature; and acidity, concentration, proportion of nitrates and chlorides, and time, are important elements. I am aware that uniformity in these conditions has been obtained to a reasonable extent by many chemists,. so that they are enabled to use with success, methods based on the

PUBLIC discussions of mine finance in the tech-nical press have been confined mainly to methods of providing funds for the development of pros-pects or other mining operations which have not reached the stage of productivity. The application of modern financing methods to mines which have behind them a successful record of net earnings has, for some reason, been given scant consideration by mine owners and managers. In a few conspicuous cases, such for example as the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Chile Copper Co., and one or two others, industrial finance has been applied to mining operations on the scale and after the fashion of other operations. When extensions are needed re-course is usually had, however, to the sale of common stock, with the obvious disadvantage of diluting the holdings of every stockholder of record prior to such financing. In some cases, it has been sought to over-come this disadvantage by issuing stock purchase rights to shareholders of record. If the stockholder is in a position to acquire additional stock, he may then pre-serve his interest intact, otherwise he must suffer a dilution of his holding. If he purchases additional stock he is, from one point of view, paying more for his in-terest than he bargained for when he made his original purchase. In many cases development and equipment are paid for out of surplus or current earnings. It is sometimes most difficult to explain to a manager why he can afford to borrow money when funds are available from a sur-plus account. Nevertheless, industrial enterprises with adequate surplus accounts often finance new construc-tion by the issuance of bonds. Such a procedure enables the company to maintain its surplus intact, and to con-tinue the payment of dividends during a temporary period of unusual expenditures.

The perusal of Mr. Willard P. Ward's " Notes on the Behavior of Manganese to Carbon," presented at the Washington meeting of the Institute in February, 1882, has suggested further reflections on the same general topic, and has led to the preparation of the present paper. The same observation that Mr. Ward has put on record in his "Notes" was also made by myself at about the same time (in August, 1875), and under almost the same conditions. From a blast-furnace that was very hot, as was the furnace mentioned by Mr. Ward, I obtained a pig-iron containing about fifteen per cent. of manganese, gray in color, and very tough. It could be pulverized, but could not be cut with the chisel. I analyzed this iron and found that it contained, as I had suspected,a large amount of silicon. From this fact I drew the conclusion that the silicon had deprived the manganese of its power of dissolving carbon, since the latter, instead of occurring in the pig in combillation, appeared as graphitic carbon. I thus saw reproduced on a large scale, and demonstrated in a visible way, the property that Colonel Caron, a French scientist, had discovered in silicon,—the property of obstructing the process of hardening in steels by keeping the carbon in the graphitic condition. An attentive study of the conditions under which the phenomenon observed by Mr. Ward takes place led me to go back to operations of synthesis, and to make as I wanted them pig-irons containing varying quantities of silicon, manganese, and carbon. An iron, thus prepared, was intended to serve me as a chemical reagent in the production of steels cast without blow-holes, such as my lamented friend, Mr. A. L. Holley, has introduced and made known to the United States. There is mitigation for the sorrow of friends and the tragedy of sudden death when that death comes at the height of a successful career. It is not everyone's privilege to die, as has been the wish of many, in the harness—toiling, accomplishing, still necessary to the scheme of things. Nor is it everyone's privilege to leave a monument to his work. Dr. Fred Walter McNair died thus—in the midst of his work of educating, leaving along the path down the quarter century of his presidency of the Michigan College of Mines hundreds of men who, having come under his influence, have been successful in life.

This paper describes the effects of slurry viscosity on the selection-for-breakage and breakage distribution parameters in the wet grinding of ores. A series of experimental tests were run on laboratory scale ball mills. Slurry viscosities were modified by varying the solids/water ratio with and without the presence of selected chemicals. Very consistent and predictable correlations are shown to exist. The grinding parameters were calculated using a computerized back-calculation technique developed by Klimpel and Austin. Industrial scale circuit calculations and preliminary plant trial data suggest that considerable increases in throughput and/or fineness of grind can be achieved through the judicious use of chemical additives.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

The increasing complexity of modern mining technology makes it ever more difficult to decide on the 'best* way to solve problems in mine planning. Yet with escalating costs it becomes increasingly more important for the mining engineer to be able to evaluate quantitatively the implications of the 'what happens if' postulation on the efficiency and economics of exploitation. The use of a model of the orebody can yield an estimate, not just of overall expected results, but also of the sensitivity of these results to possible variations in the orebody. Estimation techniques, such as Kriging, will produce the expected value for the grade of ore at any given point, or over any given volume within a deposit. However, the actual grades mined during production will - of necessity - differ from the predicted values. These possible variations, and the sensitivity of the management decisions to them, can be investigated in detail by the use of simulation. An orebody can be simulated which follows the known characteristics of the deposit at any given stage in development. These properties might be the histogram of grade values, the semivariogram from the samples, the actual borehole assays, geological constraints and/or interpretation, topography, lease boundaries etc. This would be one possible 'realisation' of the deposit as dictated by the currently known data. If several of these simulations are carried out, each conditioned to the current knowledge of the orebody, then it is possible to gain an idea of the range of possible outcomes of any mining procedure or decision taken - all of which are equally likely. Not only can the best decision then be taken, but its sensitivity to the inherent variation within the orebody, and to the ever present estimation errors may be thoroughly studied.

Ring tension tests, permeability tests, and microscopic fracture studies have been performed to investigate the damaged zone induced by drilling (diamond, percussion, and rotary) in the borehole walls. Specimens are drilled with three different hole sizes (38, 76 and 102 mm diameter) in Pomona basalt and Grande basaltic andesite. The thickness of the damaged zone ranges from 0.0 to 1.7 mm. A larger drill bit induces more wall damage than a smaller one. Different drilling techniques show different damage characteristics (intensity and distribution). Damage characteristics are governed not only by drilling parameters (bit size, weight on bit, rotational speed, diamond radius, and energy), but also by properties of the rock. The weaker rock tends to show more intense damage than does the stronger one. Cracks within grains or cleavage fractures are predominant in coarse grained rock (larger than 0.5 mm grain size) while intergranular cracks are predominant in fine grained rock (smaller than 0.01 mm grain size). The influence of the damaged zone on the permeability of the rock around the hole is investigated by permeability tests.

weight, and deflection, and recommends that the Pennsylvania Railroad Company denland that rails be made on specifications, based on these six variables, so narrow, that to fill them would cause the constant rejection of enormous quantities of steel, and a consequent enhancement of the price of rails, probably ten or twenty per cent., without any certainty that such rails would be any better than those the steel-mills are now making. I earnestly hope that the investigation which Dr. Dudley has so ably carried on will be continued. I hope the Pennsylvarlia Sailroad Company, or preferably a combination of several railroads, will institute the prolonged investigation which I think will be necessary to solve this deep problem; that they will take a hundred or more rails, watching and noting down carefully every detail of their manufacture as well as their analysis; that they will be carefully weighed before, during, and after service; that their crop-ends will be tested before service, and the rails themselves after removal; that all the sources of error which Dr. Dudley admits in the present investigation may be removed, and that enough facts may be gathered and tabulated so that the conclusions which may be drawn from them may be apparent to every one without labored discussion or heated argument. But I venture to prophesy that after this investigation shall have been completed, and a formula adopted which shall be satiefactory to both manufacturers and consumcrs, that formula will not be the one now under discussion. I hope Dr. Durlley will pardon me if I have been unduly severe in my criticism, and consider that I have written my remarks hastily and at a time which should have been given to needed rest. I differ with him only as regards the conclusions which he has drawn. I appreciate the value of his labors, and only make public my own conclusions in the hope of contributing to the advancement of the science of steelmaking, in which we are ail so deeply interested. Dr. August WENDEL, Troy, K. Y.: Dr. Dudley's last paper gives, certainly, very valuable and interesting information regarding the wear of rails under different conditions. His results concernillg the composition of rails, explotle, rather startlingly, some old theories regarding the wear of rails, and 1 think after his formula is silnplified it will be one good formula to work by. IT has always seemed to me that there is a certain similarity between the work of the mining engineer and that of the doctor of medicine-each has very often to be governed in his actions by conditions which he cannot. see. It is not necessary to detail the unseen conditions with which the mining engineer or geologist has to deal-the further extension of orebodies; the existence of new ones, the throw of a fault, the probable change in grade or character of the ore with advance of the workings, are a few of the conditions which the mining engineer has to determine as well as he can from the deductions he is able to make from what he can observe. Just so the physician is often confronted with conditions that he can not observe. Probably less than half of human ills make a manifestation at the surface of the body from which definite and certain conclusions can be drawn. The diagnostician must observe various things and, from these observations in combination, conclude what 'his course should be to bring about the cure of the trouble. Both professions would be assisted immensely by any agency that would permit them to look below the surface, something that would make more certain the diagnosis which each is called upon to make. The physician has had such an agency since 1895, when Röntgen discovered the X-ray; which, by making possible shadowgraphs of the osseous portion of the human body, advanced immensely the diagnosis of bone lesions. Later, with improvement in the technique and more understanding in the interpretation of what the photographic plate shows, other portions of the human anatomy could be examined and at the present time there is hardly an instance of internal disorder to which the aid of the X-ray is not called. Some organs are made opaque by administering mineral substances; in, other cases, conclusions are drawn from barely perceptible shadows on the photographic plate. Generally the surgeon's knife is directed with exactitude to the seat of the trouble and so not only is the difficulty revealed but the necessity for an exploratory' operation is averted.

ALTHOUGH I have already described to you the procedure for making assays of the ores (a thing that is not very different from what I wish to describe in the present chapter), I shall repeat it in substance, with the addition of the method of assaying gold, in order to tell you certain rules for weights which are very necessary to know, and above all in order to demonstrate to you the method of refining a small quantity of silver by the use of a cupel, and in order to tell you how there are (I find) only two ways that are customary for bringing silver to fineness. One is that of the cupel [copella] and the other is that of the cupeling hearth [cenneraccio], one for a small and the other for a large quantity. But although they are called by two names and appear to be two methods, the aim and the procedure of both is actually the same. Nor do I know of other difference between them than the carrying out of the method and the large or small quantity. Cupeling is a very useful thing for anyone who handles gold or silver to know. Indeed it is necessary, because it not only throws light on the work that is to be done but it also shows the truth [55] and the correct weights in large quantities. It is a quicker and easier way of bringing the work to the desired perfection than is afforded by the method for large quantities. Therefore, as you have heard, it is used in making assays in order to know exactly what quantity of the substance of silver or gold is in copper and lead or in ores, as well as in that melted material which remains among the charcoal and ashes. In short, it is the measure by which you have the certainty and safety of knowing that you have not been deceived by art or by your workmen, who had no other interest than their simple wages. Many workmen are found who are so untrustworthy that they no sooner get control of a thing than they think up some fraud, and even though some know that they must give an accounting they do not restrain themselves, although sometimes they would perhaps act with greater security and more deception than they do if they did not fear detection.
