Callow-Type flotation cells, with various modifications, have been employed at the Hayden concentrator since 1917. Other flotation machines, such as matless-air and mechanically agitated types, which have been tested in competition, have failed to handle tonnages or give metallurgical results equal to the modified Callow-type cells on the Ray ores. The original type consisted of wide, deep launders with a relatively flat bottom constructed of porous concrete, through which the air was introduced into the flotation pulp. These cells were constructed to handle the tailings from the gravity concentrating process and no special attention was given to pre- conditioning the pulp ahead of flotation.

Introduction The principal thrust of the US Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce ash and sulfur content of US coals to levels where the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The coal preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas - coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations.

Increased world consumption of crude and products coupled with the trend toward supplying this demand from the nearest and most economical source of supply had the economic effect of broadening the demand for Venezuelan crude. As a result of this, Venezucla produced more in 1934 than in 1929, the previous peak year. During 1934 Venezuelan output is estimated at a total of 139,382,000 bbl., a daily average of 381,868 bbl., against 120,442,000 bbl. in 1933, a daily average of 329,978 bbl. This is an increase of 51,890 bbl. per day. It is interesting to note from the comparison of production for the past 10 years (Table 1) that in spite of the fact that Venezuela produced more in 1934 than in 1929 its share of world production is slightly less than in 1929 and 1930. During the latter part of 1934 Vcnezuela produced its first billionth barrel of crude. Only three other crude-producing countries of the world have attained this distinction; namely, United States, Russia and Mexico. Venezuela still ranks third in the producing countries of the world, being surpassed by the United States and Russia. Exports of crude and products from Venezuela for 1934 are estimated at 133,400,000 bbl. This is an increase of 16,107,000 bbl., or 13.73 per cent as compared with 1933.

Plate loading tests which use surficial loading of a rock mass are employed quite extensively for the determination of in situ deformability characteristics of rock masses. The cable jacking method is essentially a surficial plate load test in which the test load is provided by reaction against a cable anchored at some depth below the rock surface. The results of the test are usually evaluated within the framework of the classical theory of elasticity to generate estimates for the bulk deformability properties of the rock mass. In the conventional evaluation of this test it is assumed that the test plate is rigid and that the embedded anchor load has no influence on the test plate settlement. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible influences of the plate flexibility and the anchor load location on the effective settlement of the test plate. The variational estimates presented in the paper are valid for moderately flexible test plates which are characterized by a relative rigidity parameter Numerical results are developed in the form of correction factors that should be applied to the cable jacking results to arrive at the deformability characteristics of the tested rock mass.

The different samples of brick examined were Grecian magnesite, American magnesite; silica brick and coke-oven tiling made in Belgium and used in retort coke-ovens. The Grecian magnesite was furnished by a New Pork party. The American magnesite and the silica brick were furnished by a manufacturing company in Pittsburgh. From these brick were made cylindrical cores, '79 inches long and 15/8 inches in diameter. At one end of each was drilled a hole about 1/4-inch in diameter and 11/4 inches long, into which the thermometer was inserted during the experiment. Conductivity.—The apparatus used for determining the conductivity, as shown in Fig. 1, is a sheetriron drum, 18 inches in diameter and 8 inches high. In the center is a little combustion-chamber with walls of split fire-brick, 39 inches square and about 6 inches high. The fire-brick, however, pass through the drum to the table on which the drum stands. The cores are placed horizontally, half-way between the top and bottom of drum and on the line of diameters at right angles. The furnace in which rimming steel is made has an important bearing on the quality of the steel produced. Furnace.—Particularly in the manufacture of low-carbon rimming steels, it is necessary to have an efficient, easily regulated furnace, because of the relatively high finishing temperature requirements. In recent years, the most important development in design of open-hearth furnaces has been the sealing and insulation of the greater part of the furnace to prevent air infiltration and loss of heat. Efficient, straight-line valves insure proper draft. Combustion controls guarantee correct gas-air ratios. Furnaces of all sizes ranging from 20 to 200 tons have been used successfully in the manufacture of rimming steels. Metal bath is varied from 20 to 40 in. in depth without appreciable variation in quality. Charging.—A normal open-hearth charge consists of pig iron (hot or cold), scrap of miscellaneous nature, and slag-making additions, such as limestone and burnt lime. Because of local conditions, some plants find it necessary to discard the use of pig iron and use some carbonaceolis substances with varying percentages of cast iron to replace the pig iron. It is questionable whether such practice will consistently produce the quality of rimming steel required for auto stampings and other severe drawing requirements. Pig Iron.—An open-hearth furnace under proper control should melt 150 tons of low-carbon rimming steel on about 35 to 38 per cent pig-iron charge basis. THESE brief notes respecting the properties of pure tin that make it useful as a pyrometric substance summarize information gathered by the writer In an extensive experimental investigation on the electrical properties of metals in the molten state. Tin in quantities sufficient for pyrometric purposes may be obtained at relatively low cost and in a state of high purity. The metal melts at 232° C. and, according to determinations made by Greenwood,. 1909, does not begin to boil until a temperature of 2270° C. is reached. The writer can assert, from personal observations carefully made, that tin shows no tendency to boil at a temperature of 1680° C. If Greenwood's observations are correct the temperature interval, 2038° C., in which tin exists as a liquid under atmospheric pressure, exceeds that of any other substance. It has never been observed, as far as the writer is aware, that tin forms any chemical union, as carbide, with carbon at the highest temperatures at which it can exist as a liquid. It is quite certain from the writer's personal observation that tin heated in Acheson graphite to 1680° C. remains chemically uncontaminated. Wires of pure tungsten do not dissolve in molten tin at temperatures at least as high as 1680° C. Tungsten wires or rods may, therefore, be used as electrodes dipping into molten tin when required for measuring the resistance of the molten metal at very high temperatures. When tin is raised to a high temperature in a covered graphite container, the CO atmosphere that exists above its surface has a reducing action, which maintains this surface of mirror brightness. Incidentally, tin maintained molten in a crucible of Acheson graphite makes a most excellent bath into which may be inserted several pyrometers that are to be intercompared at the same temperature.

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's con- trolling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, for good plant control, two basic requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

IV. THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN STEEL AND IRON. It would be well to decide on a definite carbon-content to serve as a boundary line between ingot-iron and ingot-steel, between puddled-iron and puddled-steel, and between any other varieties of wrought-iron and weld-steel. Two plans have been considered. One is to draw this line at 0.32 per cent. of carbon or its equivalent in other elements, for the reason that this carbon-content appears to correspond to the critical point, 0, in the diagrams of Roberts-Austen and Rooze-boom.8 This has the merit of corresponding to a definite physical boundary. The other plan is to draw the boundary at 0.20 per cent. of carbon, because this is a convenient place to separate the important classes " soft steel " and " half-hard steel," so that if this point was adopted "ingot-iron " would be synonymous with "soft steel," and " ingot-steel " would be the equivalent of the two classes, " half-hard steel " and " hard steel."

IF ASKED whether limestone production was a mining problem I would; not hesitate to answer emphatically in the affirmative. The question, "When is a quarry a mine?" is familiar. The immediate mental picture induced by the thought of limestone production is that of an open quarry. All are familiar with the open pit in the iron-producing districts of Minnesota and Michigan and the open cuts of the so-called "porphyry" coppers of the West. If these are mines, they differ little from limestone quarries in general mode of operation; if quarries, why do they need the attention of mining engineers? During 1923, the United States produced in round numbers 70,000,000, tons of ore. The limestone production of the United States for the same period was something over 100,000,000 tons. In tons, it about equals the oil production of the United States. The uses of limestone are legion. A paper read by a prominent engineer of Chicago, at the meeting of the National. Crushed Stone Association held last February in St. Louis says: "There is no industry in the United States today that is more basic in its operation or by itself controls. more industries. There is hardly a chemical operation, hardly a metallurgical operation or building operation that a crushed-stone man does not control if he will jump in and make the full utilization of it." Some of the many uses are for road metal, concrete, railway ballast, building stone, riprap, and rubble, the manufacture of iron and steel, alkalies, calcium carbide, magnesia, carbolic and carbonic acids, asphalt filler, mineral wool, poultry grit, sulfuric acid, phosphates, nitrates, soap, baking powder, the purification of copper and prevention of coal-mine explosions, to say nothing of the quantities used in the making of lime and cement. It has been said that without iron we would revert to the Stone Age; how much iron would we have without limestone? From the point. of view of the mining engineer, using the term in its broad sense to include geologists and metallurgists, the production of limestone is important because of its occurrence, volume, commercial importance, and the problems presented by its recovery and treatment.

CHARLES WILLIAM HENRY KIRCHHOFF was born March 28, 1853, at San Francisco, Cal., where his father, Charles Kirchhoff, was at that time employed in the consular service of his native country, Germany. A few years later, the family moved to Hoboken, N. J., in the public schools of which city the son received his preliminary education, proceeding later to Germany, where he was graduated in 1874 as mining engineer and metallurgist at the Prussian Royal Mining Academy of Clausthal, in the Harz. Upon his return to the United States, he became chemist of the Delaware Lead Refinery at Philadelphia, and retained that position for three years. But in 1877 he began what was to be an almost uninterrupted life-long association with David Williams, the publisher of The Iron Age, of New York, who established in that year, and continued for a brief period, a journal entitled the Metallurgical Review, on the editorial staff of which Mr. Kirchhoff received a place. The enterprise was doubtless an attempt to cover a wide metallurgical field outside of that which properly belonged to The Iron Age. But it was soon abandoned, and Mr. Williams wisely concentrated his energies upon the older journal, which, under his vigorous and skillful management, and the labors of the able editors and correspondents whom lie selected, became one of the greatest institutions off its class in the world. From 1878 to 1881, Mr. Kirchhoff was assistant editor of The Iron Age. From 1881 to 1884, he was managing editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal; in 1884 he returned to The Iron Age, to become for five years its associate editor, and in 1889, on the retirement of James C. Bayles, editor-in-chief. This list of dates and employments, without further comment, sufficiently indicates, at least to the eye of an expert, that Mr. Kirchhoff had found his congenial career in trade journalism. His qualifications for this profession were somewhat exceptional. He possessed the scientific training, the knowledge of foreign languages and literatures, and the power of making and keeping friends, which enabled him to get early notice of technical novelties; he had the taste for statistics which made him both industrious and intelligent in their collection and use; and to these traits he added a mastery of the meaning of such accumulated data, and a

INTO their great Pacific Northwest counting house went the members of the Industrial Minerals Division recently, to count their blessings amidst the scenic grandeur and mineral wealth of the State of Washington. From their vantage point in Seattle, those who attended the IMD's fourth Pacific Northwest meeting turned their sights to the South and Southeast, scanned Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Utah, and predicted a very healthy economic future for their region. The praises of Idaho's booming phosphate industry were sung by Earl W. Murphy, secretary of that State's Chamber of Commerce. He said the establishment of Fort Hall, on the banks of the Snake River near Pocatello, first turned the eyes of the world toward what is now the center of the greatest known deposits of phosphate rock-the section adjacent to the common corners of Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. With the founding of Fort Hall, Mr. Murphy said, historians will also rank the construction of the first electric furnaces for the production of elemental phosphorous as equally significant in the commercial history of the West. Those furnaces were installed only last year by the Westvaco Chemical Div. of the Food Machinery & Chemical Corp. at Pocatello, at a cost of $8 million.
