The techniques of testing the physical properties of green pellets produced in a batch balling test are described. It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

Neutron diffraction was applied to determine sheet textures by the transmission method. Cold-rolled and recrystallized copper sheets were investigated. The amount of cube texture was determined for three compositions, in which the phosphorus content was, respectively, 0, 0.005, and 0.03 wt pct. The heat treatment was in every case 8 sec at 650°C. In the two latter cases the cube texture was prevented. In addition a comparison with the X-ray diffraction transmission method was made with the 96 pct cold-rolled copper sheet. Outer parts of both (111) pole figures can be considered to be rather identical. This is seen from the fact that the intensity ratio ITD/120" was 0.45 for neutron diffraction and 0.40 for X-ray diffraction. Differences between the methods were discussed in detail. Features peculiar to neutron and X-ray diffraction in texture studies were listed and compared. In this work neutron diffraction was applied to determine sheet textures. Specifically, it was desired to ascertain whether this method can be used to reveal differences when compared to other methods. In addition, the amount of the cube texture in copper sheets was determined as a function of phosphorus content. Previous applications of neutron diffraction to texture problems include the following: nickel wires,' wire of some bcc metals,' and uranium bars.3 In the neutron diffraction technique the greatest difference is in the sample—its method of production and its volume. A sample needs no treatment and its volume is roughly 105 times larger than the volume of an X-ray diffraction sample. The cold-rolled sheet was investigated both by neutron diffraction and by X-ray diffraction, because it is expected that, due to large number of defects, possible differences in the results of the two methods would be revealed. It is a well-known fact that X-ray lines show broadening when cold-worked. Analysis has shown that this is based chiefly on small crystalline size, micro-stresses, and/or faults.4'5 Neutrons are sensitive to the above-mentioned disturbing factors as well, but circumstances in diffraction are different from the X-ray case. Because the sample represents a larger volume, the result is an average over that volume. In addition, it can be assumed that the sample has preserved its original structure, because it needs no special preparation. The particular limitation of neutrons is the relatively low neutron intensity available from nuclear reactors. This decreases the resolution as compared to the X-ray diffraction methods. Furthermore, absorption mainly reduces diffracted X-ray intensity, while multiple scattering effects, i.e., secondary extinction, disturb neutron diffraction. SO neutrons and X-rays behave in a different way when interacting with matter. As in other structural investigations, one can utilize this difference in texture studies as well. One cold-rolled and three recrystallization textures in copper sheets were investigated by neutron diffraction. The samples were produced at the Outokumpu copper factory to the specifications shown in Table I. The paper is divided into five parts. The first deals with the theory of the measurement. In the second, experimental procedures are described. Results are presented in the third part. Both cold-rolled and re-crystallized samples are studied. Discussion is in the fourth part, and finally in the fifth part some conclusions are drawn. 1) THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Properties peculiar to neutron diffraction are the following: a) the scattering length varies greatly between one element and another; b) many of the elements do not absorb neutrons appreciably. In this connection it is of primary interest to know the interaction of neutrons with lattice imperfections. As with X-rays this problem leads to diffraction analysis of deformed and recrystallized metals. From the physical point of view the main difference is that neutrons are scattered by nuclei (magnetic scattering is not considered here), whereas X-rays are scattered by electrons. The features peculiar to neutron and X-ray diffraction methods in texture studies are listed in Table 11. Pole figures are an important tool in performing structural analysis of deformed or recrystallized metal. Present texture research technology requires pole figures which are as precise as possible. The choice between these two methods depends on the technical information which is required. The X-ray diffraction transmission technique may give results which are not necessarily representative of the average physical state of the sample. Although foil samples normally contain enough crystallites for diffraction, they may not necessarily represent the whole structure. An example of this problem is the frequently observed difference between the "surface" and the "inside" texture of a sample. The production of foil samples may disturb the original structure of the parent material. The selection and orientation of the foil from the sample is quite arbitrary. THE conventional method of making water gas involves individual plants for the separate carbonization of coal to coke and the subsequent gasification of coke with steam. The process demands lump coke, preferably made from the best quality of coking coals. The ash in the coke should have a high melting point and the gasification process suffers a loss of efficiency when cokes with law ash-melting points are used. In Britain, these coals are generally the most expensive and they are readily available only in certain localities. The coals not suitable for making lump coke, or yielding only poor quality coke, are much more widely available and are generally cheaper. DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES In Germany, processes have been developed and operated commercially for the production of water gas from very low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignites, but much less effort has been spent on processes to use coals of intermediate rank, which are widely available in Britain. The brown-coal processes use coal in the form of either dust or briquettes. The most successful of the dust-gasification methods is the Winkler process, which made a substantial contribution to German oil production during the war. It uses coal in the site range 0 to 8 mm and the fuel bed is blown with a mixture of oxygen and steam at a rate high enough to give it a characteristic boiling motion or, in present-day phraseology, at a rate more than sufficient to fluidize it (Fig. 1). Air cannot be used to provide the heat required for gasification, for various reasons. In the first place, to make the process continuous by mixing air and steam would involve the production of a lean gas-containing much nitrogen. If a separate blow were used, a large amount of potential heat would be lost because the blow gas in such a process would contain a very high percentage of carbon monoxide. Oxygen is necessary therefore and oxygen remains relatively expensive for use in gasification. In the Winkler generator, formation of clinker caused by local overheating does not occur, because of the mobility and high heat transfer of a fluidized bed. A PELLETIZING plant in Germany must be able to process ores of different origins, having quite different characteristics. This requirement was of great importance for the development of the Lurgi process. For the production of green pellets a ma- chine would, therefore, have to be capable of dealing with all kinds of raw materials, and hardening must be done in a furnace, the temperature of which is adjustable to the different temperatures of the ores. Making Green Pellets To produce green pellets, experiments were made on a number of machines, such as drums, vacuum extrusion presses, and compacting machines. In 1949, Lurgi was the first to use pelletizing discs to produce iron ore pellets; until then this type of machine had been used exclusively in the cement industry.

Quantification in recording geologic phenomena and application of well-known geologic principles to engineering works continued at an increasing rate during the year. Highway departments, water resources agencies, private firms and governmental agencies involved in tunnel excavations, dam site locations and construction, consultants and government experts in subsurface liquid-waste disposal, designers of underground storage facilities and city and regional planners all confirmed greater use of applied geology in their planning and implementation of plans. Applications of quantified geologic data to highway locations, slope control of cuts, raw material sources, water sources and water run- off showed a striking increase in number. Environmental geology and geologic hazards became part of the jargon of the geologic profession, and the American public began to realize more fully the significance of where they live, and on what and near what geologic phenomena which might effect their well-being. Tunnel work for water projects of almost dream-like magnitude kept geologic engineers busily engaged in predicting and testing local geologic conditions for construction projects. Disposal of industrial and radioactive liquid wastes continued as problems, but use of stratigraphic data, fluid flow rates and direction of flow helped solve some critical waste disposal problems. Unusual applications of seismic networks, remote sensing methods and X-ray techniques in geological engineering applications added other tools to this increasingly important profession.

Ocean environmental factors are an intriguing new set of parameters to be dealt with in the prospecting and exploration phases of resource development for both the continental margins and the deep ocean. While information and data gathering programs for ocean minerals would parallel onshore procedures, their costs generally run higher. Commercial Prospecting-Identification of Mining Sites Two modes of prospecting can be identified-commercia1 prospecting (in which the ultimate objective is to define potential mining sites), and scientific prospecting, which is conducted with different objectives in mind. For ocean exploration, both types of prospecting are carried out prior to the obtaining of any exclusive rights to explore and exploit a specific deposit. Deepsea's John Flipse adds: "Any commercial prospecting program should by its very nature require the freedom to search wherever minerals might occur with maximum flexibility."

This symposium is designed to lay the basis for a general discussion of the place of geophysics in the training of geologists. As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. The Nature of Geological Inquiry "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere. Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals—that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, gla- ciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves—that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them —indeed, their very existence—are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound kntowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties call be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks. THE law of supply and demand is, in general terms, that law which governs the price of any commodity in an unrestricted competitive market. There are several variables which, for the purpose of this discussion, will be defined only as they apply to the petroleum industry: Production: The volume of petroleum that is moved from leases. Stocks: The volume of petroleum that is in the hands of the tank farm and pipeline companies. Inventory: The value of the stocks at the market. Consumption: The indicated delivery of oil to others than those who hold stocks. Demand: The potential absorbing power of the consuming market. Demand is the expression of the needs of the consumer and may depend on the economic value of the oil to the consumer. In times of low prices, the demand is the same as the consumption but during periods of high, prices or deficiency in supply, the demand may be greater than consumption. The Role of the Operator The ultimate objective of any installation is to be able to accomplish the useful work that it was originally designed for. The operator needs a tool that he can both operate effectively and maintain efficiently. The overall design and subsequent installation of a comminution circuit should be a marriage of good engineering practice and practicality. Since the operator must operate and maintain his equipment, his input into the design and installation is vital to its ultimate success. The design of a crushing or grinding circuit is dependent upon many factors including flowsheet design, equipment selection, physical layout, space restrictions, climatic restrictions and considerations for future expansion. The operator must live on a day-to-day basis with the results of the final design and installation. The most satisfactory operation will result when the operator has a major input into each of the criteria that are used to define the final design and installation. The operator referred to is not only the mining company or organization that is having the installation built for its specific use but, more specifically, the person or persons that will actually be responsible for its daily operation and maintenance. Future references to the "operator" will include those individuals with that daily reponsibility. The operator's input into the installation of the circuit is of equal importance to his input into the design. The engineering organization which puts together all of the various design drawings for circuit installation is generally restricted to trying to get all of the details onto a multitude of 24" x 36" two dimensional drawings with a few isometric drawings thrown in. It's almost impossible to get all of the details of a final installation onto all of the drawings, and field modifications are necessary to make everything fit properly. In a multilevel installation, such as a grinding or crushing circuit, it is difficult to envision space requirements to adequately operate and maintain the various pieces of equipment simply by looking at a set o£ drawings. For some designs it is helpful to build a scale model so that a more realistic view of what the installation will look like can be seen. Of all the developments in the post-war history of Western Europe, none has been more remarkable in its aims and in the progress it has achieved than the movement toward European integration. It is not an exaggeration to say that this movement marks a virtual revolution, an about-face, in the long and complicated history of European states over the past three centuries. Although sporadic efforts to achieve European integration can be traced back for at least a 100 years, it remained for the breakdown of the European economies as a result of World War II and the subsequent Russian threat to give new impetus to the concept of broader economic and political integration. In fact, the economic integration of Europe following the end of the war was considered so essential that, in 1949, the administrator of the European Cooperation Administration, Paul Hoffman, spoke of the economic integration of Western Europe as an objective of American policy embodied in the Marshall Plan.

The use of the centrifuge for dewaxing lubricating oils grew out of the effort to secure better results than had been attained by the common "cold settling" process. This process was the only known method for dewaxing steam refined cylinder stock (600" F. fire test), the product known as "bright stock" being commonlyused for building up "pressed," i.e., dewaxed neutrals of, say, 200-sec. viscosity [to a higher value. The process consisted of mixing the cylinder stock with approximately one and one-half times its volume of naphtha, heating, to dissolve completely all the oil and wax and then slowly chilling to about 15" F. in large insulated tanks. This caused the wax to precipitate. It was allowed to settle out by gravity. The supernatant liquid was then drawn off and the naphtha distilled off, leaving a still residue of bright stock. The sediment from the settling, of a slushy nature, was withdrawn. After removing the naphtha by distillation the residue was petrolatum. At some point in the process, preferably after the dilution but before chilling, the mixture was decolored by percolation through fuller's earth. The finished bright stock produced by this process had a cold test of about 50" F. Efforts to improve this by chilling to a lower temperature resulted in a considerable reduction in yield, and increased uncertainty of settling. Even when chilling to 15" F. it was not uncommon to find that after a week's waiting a tank had not settled. It was then necessary to heat and rechill. This uncertainty was a serious problem; in one case a refinery superintendent had men riveters hold pneumatic hammers against the tank for hours, hoping thus to cause agglomeration and settling of the wax. Yields of bright stock above 70 per cent, were uncommon. History of Centrifugal Application It is not surprising, therefore, that many attempts were made to improve upon the results obtained by cold settling. George H. AT THE beginning of November, Mussolini had firmly established himself at the head of the Italian Government. He himself referred to the ascendancy of the Fascisti as the result of a revo-lution and bluntly informed Parliament that it was to vote, as a matter of form, as he ordered, or else be dissolved. One of the great consequences of these events in Italy was the impetus that they gave to simi-lar movements in other countries of Continental Europe. Another great event of the month in world affairs was the repudiation by the Turks of the Mudania agreement and their notification to the Allies that the latter must evacuate Constantinople and allow the Dardanelles to be closed. This had the effect of once more consolidating Great Britain, France and Italy in so far as this question is concerned, and there was prompt refusal to accede to the demands of the Turks. With the advent of November, both the United States and Great Britain were in- the throes of political contests. The result of the American election was a landslide against the administration and especially was it an expression of agrarian discontent and a declara-tion in effect that our domestic affairs are not good in spite of political representations that they are. In Great Britain, the Conservatives were put in power by a substantial majority in Parliament, but the fact that the Labor party became numerically the second party instead of the Liberals and that it polled about 40 per cent. of the total popular vote affords ground for misgivings, especially when it be considered that the Labor party was standing on distinctly socialis-tic and communistic principles. In Russia, there was a sitting of the Third Interna-tionale, to which Lenin in a speech made a quasi-confession of the failure of the communistic experiment in Russia. He admitted, moreover, that Russia could not industrially reconstruct herself without capitalistic help. Nationally the country is making progress. During November, the Far Eastern Repub-lic surrendered to the Soviet, which thus carried Russia back to the shore of the Pacific.

The death of Mr. Stetefeldt, which occurred at Oakland, Cal., March 17, 1896, was a surprise, as well as a sorrow, to many of his friends and professional colleagues. In the Engineering and Mining Journal of March 28th, I published an obituary article, the substance of which, modified and enlarged by later information, forms the basis of the present biographical notice. I am indebted to Mr. Albert Arents, Alameda, Cal., and Mr. 0. H. Hahn, Monterey, Mex., life-long friends, and to Miss Pauline Anacker, of Gotha, Germany, a cousin of the deceased, for details which I could not have obtained elsewhere. Carl August Stetefeldt was born September 28, 1838, in the village of Holzhausen, in the duchy of Gotha, Germany, where his father was a Lutheran pastor. He was an only son, and (after the early death of a sister) an only child. In his boyhood he is reported to have been physically delicate, but mentally precocious. In 1847 his father was transferred to Hörselgau, near Waltershausen, where, besides discharging his pastoral duties, he kept a select private boarding-school, in which a few pupils received a training preliminary to the " gymnasial" course. Among these pupils (one of whom was the now famous Dr. Knorr, the discoverer of antipyrine) he included his own son, who, thus carefully prepared, entered in 1852, at the age of fourteen, the gymnasium at Gotha. The records of the gymnasium bear witness that his conduct in and out of school was " blameless," and his attention to study good." But his career as a "gymnasiast" was marked by an act of rebellion probably more startling then than it would be now. Being much more strongly attracted by the natural sciences than by the dead languages, he conceived a special aversion to Hebrew, and engaged in a conflict with the professor in that department, out of which he seems to have come victorious.
