The Secretary presented a request from the Engineering Council that the representatives of the Institute be arranged in the dicier of retirement so that one would retire in 1918, two in 1919, and two in 1920. The University of Idaho Mining Society held a meeting on Oct. 23, and elected the following officers: President, Sam Bloom; Vice-President, Lloyd McDougall; Secty Treas, Jess W. Wade. Regular meetings are held on the first and third .Tuesdays of each month, for informal lectures and reports on technical subjects. The Mining Club of the University of Wisconsin has held four recent meetings On Oct. 17, sixteen new members were inducted, and a committee was appointed to buy a Liberty Bond. The second meeting, Oct. 31, was devoted to general entertainment, at the home of Professor McCaffery.

JOULE-THOMSON coefficients for two natural gases were determined at pressures up to 600 lb. per sq. in. throughout the temperature interval between 70° and 310°F. From these primary data and available information relating to the isobaric heat capacities of the components at infinite volume, the heat capacities of these gases were computed throughout the above-mentioned range of pressures and temperatures. The enthalpies of the gases were computed as a function of state and the results compared with values obtained by several methods of prediction currently available. The results are presented in graphical and tabular form.

Few people in the industry today are competent to comment on the O.G. system for vessel covers, but with papers as well prepared as Mr. Bradley's we will soon be well informed. I would like to direct these comments to Mr. Klaes of Ford Motor Company. Mr. Klaes' description of their steaming hood agrees with our experience at Weirton. We have been able to stay within design limits and, as a result, have had few problems with our auxiliary equipment. Our main problem, as with Ford, has been thinning of our vessel cover tubes. At Weirton, controlled circulation, high pressure boilers are in use as heat recovery units above the BOP vessels. The boilers are provided with "off cycle' oil firing equipment. A Venturi type wet gas scrubber follows the boiler to complete the vessel draft system.

The report of the Comittee on Nominations was received and ordered to take the statutory course. Thereupon the chairman was authorized to appoint a committee of three members to report at the next meeting of this Board regarding the suggestions made by the Nominating Committee. The following vote of thanks was then passed to the members of the Arizona Committees and others: "WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers has a deep appreciation of the splendid success of the Arizona Meeting and WHEREAS, the Board is aware that this success was brought. about by the generous and efficient efforts of the members of the Local Committees, therefore it is

Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the "official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the Committee.

Since mineral economics is often coupled with mining engineering in the solution of mineral industry problems, it is important that the principles of this science be a part of the mining engineer's education. Essentially, mineral economics is the application of economic principles to analysis of the multistage process by which minerals are converted from geologic resources to marketable products. In some instances, it may require only the analysis of case studies from a well- developed economics core. In others, however, it requires special skills, because some aspects of the mineral conversion process--such as mineral occurrence, exploration investment and depletion-have no complete parallel in general economics. The mining engineer has been an important contributor to the analysis of mineral economics problems because of his special knowledge of the mineral industry.
