The Committee on Papers and Publications has set June 1, 1919, as the closing date for the receipt of manuscripts intended for the Chicago meeting, which is to be held in September, 1919. Manuscripts must be received by the Secretary on or before this date. If they are sent through members of the technical committees they must be sent to those committees long enough in advance to be forwarded and in the hands of the Secretary by the time specified.

The use of point load test data by the authors to estimate rock mass cohesion is a very ingenious approach. It must be emphasized that this estimate is indeed only an estimate since the point load strength index employed to predict the uniaxial compressive strength (and subsequently predict the cohesion) is likewise only an estimate.

Announcement is made that applications fir the Emmons Memorial Fellowship in Economic. Geology will be considered, and an incumbent appointed prior to the first of June. Applications should be sent to Professor J. F. Kemp of Columbia University not Intel: than May 15. . The holder of this fellowship receives an income of $1,000 and is expected to carry on an investigation in Economic Geology which will add a distinct contribution to the literature. The institution at which the study is pursued will be decided after conference with the members of the Committee of Awards. The character of the investigation will be decided after applications have been passed upon.

HE Hose Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. CLARENCE N. FENNER.-Mr. Gelstharp, chief chemist of the Pitts-burgh Plate Glass Co., has directed my attention to the fact that that company was using optical pyrometers obtained from the Leeds & Northrup Co. several months before the members of the Geophysical Laboratory arrived at Charleroi. I am glad to make this correction. The chief object of my paper was to emphasize the necessity of careful temperature control in the making of optical glass and to describe the kind of tests to which an optical pyrometer should be subjected at a glass plant in order to obtain information regarding the closeness with which its readings correspond with true temperatures under the condi-tions which prevail in each particular case.

In gassy coal mines, abandoned worked-out areas are natural reservoirs that may contain air- methane mixtures. The quantity of such mixtures is continuously increasing or decreasing as atmospheric pressure falls or rises. This is in accordance with Boyle's Gas Law, which states that the volume of a perfect gas varies inversely with the absolute pressure. In large, open gob areas without a bleeder ventilation system, atmospheric pressure is a static force acting in all directions. Changes in atmospheric pressure may occur rapidly or slowly, but any change will result in a change in the quantity of gob air-methane mixtures.

During the lust half-dozen years, longwall mining has taken on a new look, much of which is due to the introduction of self-advancing roof supports from Europe. Here is a report on two longwall operations, one which started up in 1956, the other in 1962. It is a story of manually set, friction- type props us, the new European type; the story of an 18-ton per man-shift operation us one of 50 tons per man-shift.

Several months ago, some specimens of the minerals occurring at the Etta tin mine, Dakota, were received at the laboratory of the Cornell University. On examining the heavy brownish-black portion, which I presumed was the tin-stone, I was surprised to find only a faint indication of tin. Further investigation showed the mineral to be tantalite. On searching carefully all the fragments received, a considerable quantity of that mineral was found, and only a single streak of cassiterite, which was attached to a mass of spodumene. A simplified system of flotation testing has been developed recently at the Bureau of Mineral Research of Rutgers University. The technique involves the known principle of skin flotation and can be used with minute quantities of sample and reagents in a beaker. A vessel containing the conditioned sample with added water and flotation reagents is held inclined and rotated slowly. Water-repellent particles come in contact with air and float on the surface of the liquid, while wettable particles are submerged. The float is poured off and filtered whereas the nonfloat remains in the beaker. The filtrate may be returned to repeat the process.
