The Alumet Company, a partnership of National .Steel Corporation, the Southwire Company, and Earth Sciences, Inc., is in the final phase of its feasibility study for an alunite plant. To be located in southwestern Utah, it could be the first commercial-scale operation in the Western Hemisphere to recover alumina from an ore other than bauxite. Geological Survey topographic mapping parties started initial operations in the 1953 Alaskan mapping program. One area to be covered is 17,000 sq miles in the Kantishna River, Melozitna, Tanana Fairbanks, Healy and Mt. McKinley section. The other area to be covered is the Kenai, Tyonek, Blying Sound and Seldovia areas. Average starting salary earned in 1952 by Columbia University School of Engineering graduates was $4000 yearly. This year's graduates can expect to start at about $4300, according to a survey taken by Columbia. Figures cover only those with Bachelor degrees. Graduates with a Master's started at an average of $500 per year more.

In accordance with the usual custom, manuscripts to be presented at the next meeting of the Institute must be in the hands of the, Secretary before July 1, 1917. Manuscripts to be properly distributed in advance of the meeting must be in the hands of the Secretary before June 1, 1917. At the last meeting of the Institute 45 papers were presented, and 42 of them were actively discussed. This experience makes us believe that advance distribution is the best possible means of getting a good discussion of papers and of securing for them the interest of the members of the profession. It will be impossible, however, to give the papers proper distribution if they bare not received before June 1, 1917.

CALAMINE is one of the semiminerals that have great similarity to the metals. It is a very heavy mineral earth of a yellowish color. It is found in Germany near the lead mines and in Italy in a mountain between Milan and Como. It is also found, as I have heard, in other places, as at Fosini in the territory of Siena. I believe that it is almost certain that some exists there because there are many other kinds of minerals there- about, although none is mined there in these times. A system of core logging and computerized entry and retrieval is described which permits accurate and rapid logging of core, cuttings and geophysical records derived from exploration and development bore holes. The system is so constructed that older drilling records can also be utilized. Output consists of conventional computer print out and graphic logs with a variety of scales, symbols and formats. Such logs can be used in constructing rock profiles which are necessary in property assessment and mine development.

No matter how perfectly sectioned or skilfully manufactured the rails used may have been, or with what care the road-bed may he maintained, legitimate results from these important factors cannot be secured unless proper attention is bestowed upon the joint-fastenings. In this country, splice-bars of various patterns furnish the practically universal joint. Other forms have been used, and are now being experimentally tested, but the typical American rail-joint consists of angle-plates or splice-bars. At the same time, it is true that scarcely a railroad engineer is satisfied with his joint. He may consider it the best of which he has knowledge, but at the same time he is well aware of many of its weak points.

It has occurred to me that if in this connection your society would take up the matter of the shape or section of steel rails and the form of joint, and be able to arrive at such form for difEerent weight of rails as you could recommend to the railroa~ls of tbis country with a view of obtaining uniformity, it would be, in caseof adoption, of great value both to the railroads and makers of wils. The constraints which are being imposed on metallurgical operations in respect to the environment and worker hygiene are having a substantial influence on the various processes which are being studied and developed for future use. The unit process of solvent extraction can be no exception. It is therefore vital that sufficient be known about the effects of a solvent extraction process in terms of its environmental and hygiene impacts before the process gets to the construct- ion stage. The purpose of this section is to bring these matters to the readers' attention, and to indicate, albeit briefly, some of the problems, and what we know about the effects, of SX processes from an ecological point of view. The approach proposed in this paper is, as stated by the authors, an update of methods well discussed in the literature. The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent effort in quantifying a difficult problem with realistic cost data. Economic analysis of the components of a mine ventilation system is complicated by both the dynamic nature of the system and the uncertainty as to the time when system changes occur. We wish to address three specific areas of this paper which require further consideration: shaft designed air capacity, shaft location, and economic criteria used within the analysis

THE first record of the discovery of iron ore in Missouri was Marquette's observation in 1673 of brown iron ore, or limonite, in the Mississippi River bluffs just north of the mouth of Apple Creek in southeastern Perry County. There is no record of any attempt to mine or smelt Missouri iron ores until 1815, when the Ashebran furnace was erected at the Stouts Creek shut-in near Arcadia, Iron County. Some limonite was treated in this furnace, the first iron furnace west of Ohio, but most of the ore was hematite from Shepherd Mountain and adjacent deposits. Eight years later, in 1823, the Perry furnace five miles north of Caledonia, Washington County, was constructed to smelt limonite ore. It

There are no data available of shipments until 1858, and then estimated, when railroad service became available. By reason of the iron made in the county, and the large amounts of salt, the tonnage used locally was quite large, and until 1860 these are estimated from the probable salt and iron production. After 1859 the tonnages shipped by rail are partly estimated from the total shipments of the Allegheny Valley Railroad from four counties. It is believed that the totals are below, rather than above, what the actual production was. While considerably larger for the same years than figures given by the Secretary of Internal Affairs and census reports, these data were always too low in those days, partly because of lack of facilities for gathering them, but more largely because of the strong prejudice existing in those days against furnishing such data to any governmental agencies.

WHILST most of the silver- and copper-bearing veins of Butte have characters somewhat similar, the Gagnon vein has certain rather remarkable features which are not noticed in any of the other mines. The silver-veins proper, as illustrated in the Alice, Lexington, Moulton, and many others, have certain well-known typical characters. Manganese is always present in variable quantities as rhodocrosite or rhodonite, associated with quartz, pyrite, and sphalerite, and with little or no copper. The copper-veins also have certain mineralogical characteristics, which are very similar, or different only in minor points. Chalcocite, chalcopyrite, bornite, enargite, with variable quantities of pyrite, may be said to represent the general mineralogical features of these lodes. Forecasters, in estimating long-term energy requirements and supplies, have predicted a bright outlook for coal. Some predictions have annual coal output reaching 800 million tons by 1980, almost twice the average of the last five years. These projections assume that ultimate consumer energy products will be supplied adequately not only in volume but also by kind and type. The consumer energy schedule shifts continually as it reflects the changing demands for numerous uses. Its appearance, expressed generally in proportions of solids, liquids, gases and electricity, is quite different today from what it was in 1940. It may change even more by 1980. Thus, the shares that coal and the other energy sources will have In total supply will depend upon how well each source can be processed into products that will be accepted by consumers.

The following resolution was passed by the Military Engineering Committee of New York on April 12, 1917. Copies are being sent to each member of Congress and to each of the five members in every State forming the committee representing, the five National engineering societies which carried on the industrial census under the direction of Howard Coffin. The Committee is urging every man to wire his Congressman and his Senator, asking him to do everything in his power to obtain favorable action by Congress on this resolution: Whereas in any large army to be created for the war, engineer troops will be needed in large numbers, and Whereas they should be officered by skilled engineers only, and Whereas the composition and training of such troops differ so much from the composition and training of non-technical troops that they should be organized under one central authority rather than under many scattered authorities. Now, therefore, be it resolved: That the members of the Senate and House of Representatives be requested to insist that all new units of engineer troops be organized and maintained by the War Department and not by the individual States.

IN order to secure cupels uniform in size, density, etc., I have arranged a machine which has proved quite satisfactory, and is so simple and inexpensive as to be within the reach of nearly everyone. It has been in operation here about four years, and with it all cupels used in the assay department of the School of Mines have been made. As shown in the accompanying figure, it consists of a common letter-press, the movable platen of which has been removed. In place of the plate, there is attached to the screw a plunger, which turns with the screw, moving up and down, and making the depression in the cupel. The ring holding the bone-ash is held in place directly underneath the plunger by a wooden guide fastened to the base of the press. There is also fastened to the top of the guide for the ring, at a distance above the base of the press equal to the height of the cupel-ring, a piece of mood about § inch thick, under which the ring will just slide into place, and through which there is cut a circular hole exactly fitting the plunger, guiding it in its downward movement always in the same vertical line; this last guide not only directs the plunger, but also prevents the lifting of the ring by the plunger, upon the raising of the latter.
