PRIOR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators' viewpoint, but. they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company's mines possess many advantageous features that are not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 7 ½ ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.), and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of ,the stations, however, is about 75° F. (24° C.), while the average temperature in some of the drifts and crosscuts is 92° F. (33.5° C.).

This paper describes the microstructural changes that occur when quenched ultrahigh-strength steels containing OA pet C and various amounts of nickel, silicon, and cobalt are tempered. The changes that occur in hardness, yield strength, and martensite diffraction-peak widths when these steels are tempered are related to the precipitation of the carbide phases. An unea$ectedly high silicon content (about 30 pct) was found in the E -carbide phase in a steel containing only 1.5 pct Si. TEMPERED martensitic steels have such wide-spread utility that they have been the subject of numerous investigations, and a sizable amount of literature has developed on this subject.M This investigation, which is a part of a larger program to correlate microstructure with mechanical properties at a variety of strength levels, is limited to the microstructural changes that occur when a quenched 0.40 pct carbon steel (USS Airsteel X-200 steel) is tempered, and to the effects of the alloying elements—nickel, cobalt, and silicon—on these microstructures. Used in this investigation were electron microscopy, electron-diffraction identification of the carbide phases, electron-probe micro-analysis of the carbides, X-ray determinations of retained austenite, and measurements of martensite X-ray diffract ion-peak widths. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical analyses of the eight heats examined eats No. 30 through 37) are shown in Table L Heat No. 30 has the chemical com~osition of Airsteel X-200, and the remaining seven heats contain various amounts of nickel, chromium, cobalt, and silicon. The heats were air-melted in an induction furnace and cast into 8 by 8 in. ingots that were subsequently heated to 2300 and rolled to 1-in.-thick plate. Oversize 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens were rough-machined from the plates and austenitized in air at 1700° F for half an hour and oil-quenched. The specimens were then tempered in air at temperatures of 400° to 1000 for tempering times of 1, 4, and 16 hr, and finish-machined to 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens. Electron micrographs were prepared from Formvar replicas of the midthickness of tensile-specimen shanks that had been electrolytically polished and etched in nital. Electron-diffraction patterns were obtained from carbon-extraction replicas. The replicas were prepared by etching the sample surface in the same manner as for microscopy, evaporating carbon on the etched surface, and re-etching the sample to free the carbon film and the precipitate particles. Electron-probe microanalysis was performed on some of the extraction replicas. To obtain adequate fluorescent X-ray intensities, several thicknesses of replica were exposed to the electron beam so that the results represent an average composition of the extracted particles rather than an analysis of single precipitate particles. The retained austenite contents of the specimens were determined by an empirical X-ray diffraction

IT may be taken for granted that a mine official knows his duties, as outlined by the bituminous mining laws of the State, he knows how coal should be mined and transported, and he has judgment on any possibly unsafe condition in his mine. Certainly, if he is weak on any of these points, there are definite ways in which he can acquire the needed knowledge. If with this knowledge the mine official has the necessary practical experience to bring self-confidence, he stands before the world as a man who knows his job. There is, however, another side to his work, one not found in hooks, a side even that may not be learned at the face even though one spends a lifetime there. The actual duties a mine official knows and performs are the tangible and definite things about his work. There are other things which may be termed intangible, because they are hard to pin down and see, and. which appear to be of equal importance in successfully handling a job and which in time determine the very success of the company itself.

The rich Tiller seam in southwest Virginia averages 10 to 15 ft in thickness. But because it is separated into two benches, mining engineers for years considered it neither physically nor economically feasible to mine. Profitable recovery of this coal has been made possible only by: full-seam mining with automatic machines; and the largest and most highly automated coal preparation plant of its kind-a plant ten stories high which washes, screens, and dries at the rate of 1500 tph, and produces both metallurgical and steam coal products. The Moss No. 3 preparation plant of Clinchfield Coal Co. Div. of Pittston Co. is located at Clinch- field, Va., only a short distance from the 450-tph Moss No. 2 plant, and was designed, built and erected by Link-Belt Co.

Lawall: he is the only A.I.M.E. member also a university president, though several engineering colleges are headed by Institute members. Only last year he was promoted from director of the school of mines to president of West Virginia University, following a term as acting head of that institution of over 3000 students. He was born in Catasauqua, in eastern Pennsylvania, on Nov. 21, 1891, and went to Lehigh, receiving an E.M. in 1914, and an M.S. seven years later. As electrical power is used to a greater extent on the Rand than in any other mining center, it is thought that a short description of the methods used and results obtained may be of interest. In comparing Rand practice with that on other fields, several general factors should be borne in mind: First, the mines are all working on large tonnages of low-grade ore (average. $6.50). The annual crushing rate is about 27,000,000 tons. Second, the mines are all grouped udder the financial and engineering control of mining houses, so that the results of a group, rather than an individual mine, are open for study, and practice follows more uniform lines. Third, coal of fair quality (about 12,000 B.t.u.) can be obtained for $2 to $3 per ton., Good supplies of condensing water are, however, scarce, and have to be carefully stored. Power Supply Power is supplied by the Victoria Falls & Transvaal Power Co., Ltd., and its subsidiary, the Rand Mines Power Supply Co. Both companies, which are practically one from an engineering point of view, operate the following stations, all feeding into the same system.

The deformation modes of rhenium have been identified as those typical of the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium whose c/a ratios, in common with rhenium, are less than ideal for close packing. Slip is observed on (1010), (1011), and (0001) planes and twinning on (1121), (1122), and (1012) planes. The very high rate of work hardening is believed to be associated with intersecting partial dislocations on two (1010) systems which can combine to form sessile barriers. If the stacking fault energy is low, as postulated by Seeger, these barriers should be strong and not easily bypassed by cross slipping. Such an explanation could also account for the very small temperature dependence of the yield stress which was observed. RHENIUM is interesting scientifically as a member of the group of high melting point hexagonal metals: titanium, beryllium, and zirconium with a c/a ratio less than that for ideal close packing. Unlike them, however, it work hardens at a very high rate. This rate is greater and continues to a much higher degree of deformation than for nickel, normally considered to have a high rate of work hardening. This paper presents experimental observations on the modes of deformation of rhenium and, by comparison with other hexagonal metals, some speculation on the cause of the high work hardening. MATERIALS Johnson, Matthey rhenium powder of both 99.9 pct and 99.5 pct purity, see Table I, was compacted at 10 tons per sq in., part sintered at 1350°C in vacuo, and finally arc melted in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace to produce small buttons. Little difference was observed in the as-cast hardness or working down behavior of the two purities suggesting that either silicon and potassium do not have a significant effect on the working properties of rhenium or they were lost during arc melting. SPECIMEN PREPARATION The cast structure was broken up by cold-rolling with inter-stage annealing at 1600o or 1800°C in a vacuum high-frequency furnace using a tungsten susceptor. Strip for tensile testing was taken from two thicknesses of material 0.011 and 0.064 in. The former with intermediate anneals at 1800°C had a grain size of 900 grains per sq mm, while the latter with inter-stage annealing at 1600°C had a grain size of 3600 grains per sq mm. A coarse grain size was obtained by secondary recrystallization in a half button cold-worked by 30 pct reduction. Annealing times of from half an hour to several hours at 2200° to 2600°C in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace1 resulted in grains of up to 2 mm diam.

FLOTATION practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 13 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are due to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the eight years the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened. ORES OF THE DISTRICT The ores of the district are of two general classes: (1) clean lead ores, such as those from the Bunker Hill and Hecla mines, and (2) complex lead-zinc ores. The general impression prevails that the clean lead ores, class 1, are simple and that it is easy to obtain high recoveries and good grade products. This, in a way, is a false impression; there is quite a high percentage of locked middling in these ores at 100 and 150-mesh sizes. Improved classification preparatory to table treatment of this type of ore has made it possible to segregate effectively a high-grade middling which is further comminuted and floated. The complex lead-zinc ores of the district, of which the ore from the Morning mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is a typical example, always have presented a difficult problem. It always has been comparatively easy to make a clean lead concentrate, but it never has been possible to concentrate sphalerite with a-specific gravity of 4.10 from siderite of gravity 3.88. Also, a large percentage of the galena and sphalerite of this class of ore refuses to separate out until the crushing has been carried

SINCE 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1, 2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression. 3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above-i.e., as a [110] fiber texture-although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orienta-tion that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deforma-tion. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its develop-ment, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a com-parison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystal-line specimen; the origin of asterism in deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces of slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains in an aggregate to the strain of the whole.

Oxygen-18 exchange between gaseous oxygen, held at a pressure of 125 mm Hg in a PL-IORh chamber, and splzeres of a Fe2O3 containing three or less grains was determined from 9000 to 1250°C. Isotope equilibrum on crystal surfaces appears to be quickly established, and the rate-determining factor is self-difiusion confbvrning to the relation D = 2.04 esp(- 77,900/RT) sq cin sec-'. Changing sphere diameters caused no detectable variation in diffusion coefficients. Oxygen ions diffuse faster than cations at low temperatures, but a crossover may occur at about 1150°C. INVESTIGATIONS by Davies et al.' and Himmel et al2 have suggested that the mechanism of iron oxidation above 600°C involves a predominance of cation migration in the wüstite (FeO) and magnetite (Fe301) layers and oxygen-ion migration in the hematite (a Fe2O3) layer. Evidence for little cation migration during hematite growth consists of: 1) the disappearance of radioactive-silver markers, presumed to vaporize from the oxide-gas interface, and 2) a large discrepancy between parabolic rate constants for magnetite oxidation and those calculated from Lindner's3 data for cation self-diffusion, D:, using Wagner's theory.4 Reversing the calculations gave anticipated self-diffusion coefficients, D:, for oxygen ions of 3.6 x 10-9 sq cm sec-1 at 1100°C and 5.9 x 10-10 sq cm sec-1 at 1000°C. Since then Kingery et a1.5 reported three values for oxygen-ion diffusion in polycrystalline, sintered hematite. These were obtained near 1200°C, at an oxygen pressure of approximately 150 mm Hg, and could be represented by the Arrhenius expression, Dg = 1 x 10 11 exp(-146,000/RT) sq cm sec-1. Extrapolation to temperatures below 1100°C infers that oxygen ions are less mobile than cations. This contradicts the aforementioned oxidation evidence and also coble7s study of the initial sintering of hematite. From the latter, apparent diffusion coefficients for the slowest rate-controlling species could be calculated, and fair agreement was found with an extension of Lindner's data for cation diffusion. Fig. 1 depicts such comparisons graphically. Three points have been included for the determinations of Himmel et al. on cation diffusion in large, natural hematite crystals surrounded by pure oxygen at atmospheric pressure. No dependence on crystal log raphic direction was noted. Since the value of 10-l4 sq cm sec-' at 1000°C actually represents an upper limit, one might interpret that there is a small decrease in D: when single crystals are employed. On the whole, however, cation diffusion appears relatively well-defined,* while the few results tension to lower temperatures. After having gained experience measuring oxygen-ion diffusion in certain glasses7 and in the corundum oxide, a Cr2O3, the purpose of this work was to determine D; values for hematite and thus possibly assist a mechanistic understanding of the kinetics of the oxidation and reduction of solid iron oxides. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Material. Hematite powder of moderately high purity was received from the Columbian Carbon Co. An accompanying lot analysis listed 0.03 H2O, 0.008 weight percents, with the remainder Fe2O3. Subsequent treatments were ball milling, drying, prepressing, and hot-pressing for 60 min at 1350°C under 5000 psi. Since graphite dies coated with a slurry of alumina were used for hot-pressing, the surrounding atmosphere at temperature was sufficiently reducing to form some magnetite on the outer surface of each cylinder. After removing any attached alumina, a stabilizing anneal of 50 hr at 1300°C in oxygen was added. The final product was nonmagnetic and exceeded 97 pct of the density (5.24 g cm-3) usually given for FezO3. DISCUSSIONS of trade and commerce are generally more comprehensive today than in the past; the problems are approached with a vision unrestricted by national boundaries, and broad enough to comprise the entire world. The extent to which the limited viewpoint that has characterized past ages is yielding to an economy of world-wide scope is exemplified by the Atlantic Charter which blazes a trail in the direction of trade principles that aim to preserve the interest of each individual country in the commonwealth of nations. Its fourth article promulgated the principle that all nations should have access on equal terms to the trade and to the raw materials of the world which may be needed for their economic prosperity. Future developments in reciprocal international trade may have some effect upon the flow of nonmetallic minerals but such effects are not likely to be great because tariffs and trade policies have not affected that flow profoundly in the past. Nevertheless conditions may change and new problems may arise demanding important decisions. Sudden changes are not to be expected, but rather an orderly evolution in which national interests will merit due consideration in establishing broader policies.

The lean, but extensive iron ore deposits of the Dunderland Valley north of Mo i Rana, Norway, are the raw material base for Rana Mines, a division of the state-owned A/S Norsk Jernverk steel mill. The iron bearing minerals are magnetite and specular hematite. The magnetite/hematite ratio varies considerably both within each deposit and from one deposit to another. The ore bodies that lend themselves to mining have generally a thickness of 30-60 m grading 30-35% Fe and 0.15-0.25% P. The grain size varies from 0.05 to 2.5 mm. The fine grained ores are hard while the coarse grained ores are soft and easy to grind. The A/S Norsk Jernverk steel mill operates both a sinter and a pellet plant, and this necessitates production of two types of concentrates. The present flowsheet is shown in [Fig. 1]. The crude ore from the pits is crushed in a 1.07-m gyratory crusher with an open side setting of 12.7 cm. The crusher product is transported by rail to the concentrator located 25 km from the mines. The ore is fed by twelve 1.22 X 1.83 m vibratory feeders onto conveyor belts which carry the ore to a surge bin ahead of the autogenous mills. The feed rate is automatically adjusted to maintain a set power load at a level suitable for the ore type being processed. The mills operate in closed circuit with twelve dual-drum screens equipped with a 0.8-mm screen cloth. Oversize is returned by gravity to the mill feed while undersize flows to the gravity separation section which consists of Humphrey spirals in three stages. The ores are very heterogenous and analysis may vary quite considerably. The quantitative need for concentrate in the steel mill may also change rapidly. The process in the concentrator must therefore be easily changed, and consequently alternative process lines have been established. This is indicated with the dotted lines in the flowsheet. Apatite is removed by flotation by fatty acids to give a final sinter concentrate of 63% Fe and 0.020% P or less. Pellet concentrate contains about 65% Fe and less than 0.020% P. The fineness is about 1500 Blain.

Some large blocks of acreage were leased in Marion and Clay counties near the central part of the Illinois structural basin. Production of oil in the state totaled 4,305,000 bbl., a decrease of 4 per cent from that of 1934 There was some curtailment of production in the early part of 1935 but none after April 30 as shown in the following table. In a recent technical note, Owen Thornton&apos; suggests that wetting liquid relative permeability may be derived from the relationship: where Pd/Pc is the ratio of displacement pressure to capillary pressure at the wetting liquid satdration Sw, and I is the resistivity index at this saturation. Thornton shows that this expression gives values for relative permeability in good agreement with those experimentally determined by Leverett. We have recently developed another expression for krw which seems preferable to Equation 1 since it requires fewer experimental data for its verification. This equation may be derived in the following manner. Making use of the analogy between mass transfer of fluid in a porous medium and electrical conductivity through the fluid in the same medium, we can postulate a hydraulic formation resistivity factor analogous to an electrical formation resistivity factor. From Poiseuille&apos;s Law the resistivity to flow in a tube of radius R is of the form 8u/R², where is the viscosity of the fluid. Similarly7 the resistivity to flow in a porous medium of the same dimensions as the tube is given by D&apos;Arcy&apos;s Law as where k is the permeability of the medium. The hydraulic formation resistivity factor, Ff, is thus the quotient of these two resistivities, or: But permeability is defined by the KO-zeny equation as: where: r is the average pore radius of the porous medium, L. is the average tortuous length of the average pore, + is the porosity, and L is the bed length. In a recent technical note, Owen Thornton&apos; suggests that wetting liquid relative permeability may be derived from the relationship: where Pd/Pc is the ratio of displacement pressure to capillary pressure at the wetting liquid satdration Sw, and I is the resistivity index at this saturation. Thornton shows that this expression gives values for relative permeability in good agreement with those experimentally determined by Leverett. We have recently developed another expression for krw which seems preferable to Equation 1 since it requires fewer experimental data for its verification. This equation may be derived in the following manner. Making use of the analogy between mass transfer of fluid in a porous medium and electrical conductivity through the fluid in the same medium, we can postulate a hydraulic formation resistivity factor analogous to an electrical formation resistivity factor. From Poiseuille&apos;s Law the resistivity to flow in a tube of radius R is of the form 8u/R², where is the viscosity of the fluid. Similarly7 the resistivity to flow in a porous medium of the same dimensions as the tube is given by D&apos;Arcy&apos;s Law as where k is the permeability of the medium.
