An experimental investigation was conducted to study the response of soft, porous rock, green shale, under dry and liquid-filled conditions to normal impact of hemispherically-tipped cylindrical steel projectiles with diameter and mass of 6.35 mm and 31 g, respectively. Disk-shaped green shale specimens with nominal thickness and diameter of 32 mm and 127 mm, respectively, were tested in the initial projectile velocity range of 18 to 42 m/s. For the liquid-filled tests, the green shale specimens were saturated with kerosene. A total of eight impact tests were conducted. Information on the extent and pattern of the damage in the rock and velocity histories of the projectiles were collected. It was found that while the penetration depth was quadratically related to the initial projectile kinetic energy for the dry case, the penetration depth for the liquid-filled case was directly proportional to the initial projectile kinetic energy. The results of the impact tests under dry and liquid-filled conditions conformed well to a linearly viscous model and a Coulomb frictional model, respectively. The major deformation processes in the dry specimens were found to be compaction and equivolumnial distortion of the material. In the liquid-filled case, however, formation of cracks and equivolumnial distortion with less material compaction were observed. Furthermore, craters were formed as a result of the crack formation in the liquid-filled specimens.

This paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point go km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of Sao Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a byproduct of kaolin mining. These deposits, and a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé.. The first is go km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriai. area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. Elsewhere in Brazil mica has been reported from eastern Goiaz, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Matto Grosso, and Amazonas. Production from these sources is negligible at present. Because of the inferior quality of the mica from the more accessible of these localities, and the operational difficulties occasioned by the remoteness of others, it is improbable that they will become important producers for some time to come.

Although thousands of tons of stainless steel have been used successfully for many types of equipment, there have been few cases of failures due to the phenomenon described as stress corrosion cracking. During the past seven years only six cases of such failures have been drawn to our attention and investigated in the Research Laboratories with which the author is associated. These failures oc¬curred in two coffee urns, two wool con¬ditioning units, one dyeing machine, and another in a part of a steam-jacketed stock pot. In each case the equipment failed in a comparatively short time after exposure to conditions of high humidity at tempera¬tures in the range of 100 to 200 F. The failures in all cases were characterized by general embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel, with only slight indications of general corrosion except at the cracks. The first failure of this type was a coffee urn returned for investigation in 1937. The top and bottom sections showed a general corrosive attack and embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel. The chemical analyses of these sections were as follows:

THE THIRD and most important item on the Phelps Dodge agenda for the development of new ore supplies involved the site of the company's initial venture into Arizona, the old mining camp of Morenci. By the purchase of the Arizona Copper Company's holdings in 1921, Phelps Dodge had obtained control of virtually the entire Morenci district, including town, public utilities, and, above all, the huge mineralized area that had once been divided between numerous competing companies. Because of this rigid concentration of ownership in the hands of one organization, Phelps Dodge was able to plan and successfully carry out a program of greater magnitude than any Arizona mining company had previously under- taken. The immense deposit of low-grade ore, usually referred to as the Clay Orebody, had been known to the mining companies of Morenci for many years. Pioneer exploratory work, both by the Arizona Copper Company and later by Phelps Dodge, revealed that the deposit, mostly of light-gray porphyry rock, lay under a hard capping from two hundred to five hundred feet thick. AN economist at MIT provided Americans with myth destroying information which should prove effective against the gentlemen of the extreme left. For a number of years they have charged that a small number of companies in each industry has been grabbing more and more of the industry's business. M. A. Adelman has shown that the concentration of business in the hands of big corporations has not shown any sign of growth during the last 50 years. Quite the contrary, there has been a slight decline in this concentration, according to Adelman. There are more small companies per thousand population than ever before. Bearing this out is the fact that International Harvester is now doing 41 pct of the possible market against a former 85 pct; American Can Co. has dropped from 90 pct to 50 pct; American Smelting is down to 31 pct compared with 90 pct; and lastly, U. S. Steel which has plummeted from 65 pct to slightly more than 30 pct of the steel market. Declines of the same proportions have hit big companies in other industries. Price cuts on Detroit's 1953 automobiles indicate that even among the biggest competition is still one of the most important household gods. Big business is still slugging it out for the attention of the American consumer. It's a battle which can only have one result-benefit to the man who buys.

One manifestation of anelastic properties in solids is the mechanical elastic aftereffect, which may be described briefly as follows: If a stress is applied to a solid body, a deformation or strain is produced. On removal of the stress, this deformation disappears, at least in part. As a first approximation, this appearance or disappearance of deformation usually has been considered instantaneous. Actually, however, for a very wide variety of substances, on application of stress the instantaneous deformation is followed by a further slow yielding, which continues, although at a rapidly diminishing rate, for as long as the stress is applied. Similarly, on removal of the stress, the instantaneous recovery from deformation is followed by a further slow recovery, which continues, although at a rapidly diminishing rate, often for a long time. This latter phenomenon has been called the "elastic after-effect." Experiments upon the elastic after-effect in metals, when properly designed and when properly interpreted, are capable of giving quite precise information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the various constituent parts of the metal. For example, if certain parts of the metal, such as grain boundaries or slip bands, behave in a viscous manner—that is, if therein—the relaxation spectrum will contain lines or bands associated with the relaxation of shear stress within these parts. No attempts have heretofore been made to utilize elastic after-effects for obtaining such detailed information. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the possibilities of properly designed and interpreted experiments on the elastic aftereffect in metals. Since new procedures and principles are employed in this study, an attempt has been made to record each step taken. Elastic after-effect observations are susceptible of simple interpretation only when the stress level employed is so low that all effects are linear with the stress. Just how low the stress level must be can he determined only by experiment. An advnntage, other than simple interpretation, is associated with low stress levels. When all effects are linear, derived quantities, such as the relaxation spectrum, are independent of the stress distribution. It is, furthermore, possible to employ the type of deformation that is most convenient from the experimental standpoint; for example torsion. It appears that in experiments involving both loading and unloading the following would be observed: I. Instantaneous deformation, recoverable instantaneously in whole, or in part. 2. Delayed deformation, recoverable slowly in whole, in part, or not at all. 3. Permanent deformation, the difference between total deformation and total recovery. TEE purpose of this paper-is to describe a new process for the refining of secondary copper-base metals and a specially designed high-temperature electric-resistor furnace used in the process for the distillation of zinc from these metals. The process was used for the conversion of nickel silver to cupronickel and to recover the zinc content in metallic form. It also proved applicable and economical for the treatment of scrap brass for separating and reclaiming the copper and zinc. The relatively large furnace developed for the distillation of zinc is described in detail, for it made economically possible the direct recovery of metallic zinc from scrap brass, which is a new step in the processing of such material. Considerable interest has been shown in the utilization of the distillation furnace for other metallurgical processes, where it is of advantage to operate in a controlled neutral or reducing atmosphere, or to avoid having the processed metal in contact with refractories other than carbon, or to operate at temperatures between 3000 and 4000°F. PURPOSE OF DEVELOPMENT It was recognized early in the war effort that nickel would become a critical metal, therefore all nickel stock and alloys containing relatively high percentages of nickel were frozen immediately. Among these alloys were considerable quantities of various grades of nickel silver, an alloy containing copper, nickel, zinc, and in some grades lead, also minor amounts of iron, manganese and other constituents. At the time there was no existing plant or process to eliminate the zinc, lead, and minor constituents so as to convert this metal to cupronickel, one of the important alloys needed by the U. S. Navy for condenser parts. Therefore the Bureau of Industrial Conservation of the War Production Board requested the executives of the leading nonferrous metal companies to have their metallurgical staffs study the problem of converting this metal to cupronickel conforming to U. S. Navy Specification 44T40. The composition specified therein is as follows: nickel, 29 to 32 per cent; zinc, 1.00; iron, 0.00 to 0.60; lead, 0.05; tin, 1.20; manganese, 0.00 to 1.00; total of other elements (maximum), 0.50; copper, remainder. The problem in converting these alloys to cupronickel was the elimination of zinc, lead, iron, manganese, and other elements without appreciable loss of nickel to slags or other by-products. Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, through its Research and Development Department, undertook to solve this problem. A Government-owned plant was built at Rome, N. Y., and there the con- version was successfully made.

The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Derr and George D. Barron. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

IT is obvious that details such as the physical and chemical properties and methods of heat-treating of the materials mentioned must be omitted in a paper on the subject of materials used in oil-refinery pumps1. Only sufficient identification is given to enable the reader to find additional information from already published data. Also, the subject covers many operating conditions, but only the most important services can be discussed here. To the oil refiner, the pumping equipment is of vital interest. Practically every refinery operation, from the charging of crude oil to a distillation unit to the shipping of refined products, involves some form of pumping machinery. Intermediate refining stages involve a great variety of pumping machinery to carry out successfully the aims of the refinery technologist. Temperatures at which oils are handled vary from -50° F. to 900° F. Pressure may vary from subatmospheric to 2000 lb. per sq. inch. The selection of the proper materials involves a careful consideration of the conditions under which the particular pump must operate. The four, most important considerations are temperature, pressure, corrosion, and abrasion or wear. Consideration of temperature may be divided into three parts: (1) extremely low temperatures of the order of -50° F.; (2) temperatures at atmospheric or slightly above; .(3) temperatures from 200° to 900° F. Pressures fall into two groups: (1) pressures reached by ordinary trade pumps of the order of. 200 lb. per sq. in., (2) extreme pressure conditions involving pressures as high as 2000 lb. Noncorrosive and corrosive oils can be treated differently. Under the latter falls corrosion in the presence of water, which will occur up to 250° F. The second type of corrosion occurs in high-temperature pumping equipment, with temperatures from 450° to 900° F., largely caused by sulfur compounds. The electric utility industry is the largest customer of the coal industry and consumes nearly 50% of the present coal production in the United States. The byproduct of the burning of coal in utilities is ash in several forms including fly ash, bottom ash and bottom slag. At present, very little of the coal ash produced is being used and must be disposed of as waste. The coal industry should look upon this waste material as a valuable by-product which, if it can be sold for $2 to $4 per ton, will have the net effect of reducing the cost of coal to the utility by 1¢ to 2¢ per million Btu. There are many ways to use coal ash and thus benefit both the coal industry and the electric utility industry by reducing the cost of coal as burned. The solutions to the problems are obvious and all we have to do is apply them. The electric utility industry is the largest customer of the United States coal industry, consuming nearly 50% of present coal production. By 1980, the electric utilities are expected to burn over 500 million tpy of coal or 75% of total coal production. When coal is burned in electric utility plants, ash is produced in one of several forms. These include fly ash, bottom ash and bottom slag. At the present time, approximately 20 million tons of these ashes are produced and must be disposed of by the utilities at a cost of 50¢ to $2 per ton. In 15 years, more than double this quantity will be produced. Only a small quantity of this ash is put to any practical use. Much remains to be done about expanding uses for fly ash and bottom slag. It is well known that fly ash, when used to replace a portion of the cement in a concrete mix, will produce highest quality concrete. The Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation have constructed dams and other concrete structures for years with fly ash as a partial replacement for cement. However, many construction firms do not use it. This can become an opportunity for the coal industry to reduce the cost of coal delivered to utilities. Any fly ash, or other ash or slag, which is sold by the utilities, reduces the cost of coal burned by the utility. As much as 1¢ to 2¢ per million Btu could be taken from the fuel cost for each ton of ash sold which otherwise must be disposed of at a cost.

IT IS common to blame irregular assay results upon volatilization and much has been written upon the subject, but there is no. real evidence that, in a properly conducted assay, the loss of either gold or silver by volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result, even when, arsenic or antimony may be present. Bulk assays of flue dust from assay muffles have been published, but the data given are totally insufficient to even approximate the volatilization from a single assay; and such figures as we have indicate the volatilization to be extremely small. Diligent search in the literature and wide inquiry among assayers and instructors have failed to produce a single case where the litharge volatilized in making an assay has been collected and assayed for gold and silver. Having attempted to do this, with most indifferent success, I am not surprised that this has not been done. While various textbooks give volatilization as a cause of loss in cupellation, it may safely be said that in the rare cases where this volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result it is due to excessive temperature. Percy1 says "The loss of silver by volatilization during cupellation is very slight (unless the temperature has been much too high), and may be disregarded." This statement is repeated by the Beringers2 and Smith,3 who includes gold with silver. Mitchell4 says the litharge fume rarely contains over one ten-thousandth of silver. Campredon5 says that at a proper temperature no silver is lost by volatilization.

When coal is stored under ordinary conditions, progressive changes take place in its chemical and physical properties. These changes are largely caused by the reaction of atmospheric oxygen with the coal substance. Although this "oxidation" or "weathering" occurs slowly in the case of high-rank coals, it is nevertheless a matter of considerable importance, since even a small amount of oxidation may affect the value of coal for carbonization purposes. Coal storage is a necessity at all carbonizing plants. In normal times there are about 5,000,000 tons in storage at by-product coke ovens and gas retorts in the United States, as compared with an annual throughput of about 75,000,000 tons. In other words, the average coal reserve at such plants is slightly less than one month's supply. However, owing to the cost of storage and recovery, coal is usually left in stockpile for as long a time as the management thinks advisable. Storage for six to eight months is common practice and is, in fact, a necessity at certain plants which obtain their coal by water routes that are closed during winter months. Modern by-product coke ovens operate continuously, and they are not cooled down from the time that they arc put into operation until they are shut down for rebuilding—perhaps 20 years later. This continuous operation is imposed by silica-brick construction and high operating temperatures. It is therefore obvious that coke plants must at all times maintain an adequate supply of stored coal, in order to prevent a failure in supply from any cause whatever. Thus when strikes or other emergencies threaten, abnormally large coal stocks are accumulated and held at coke and gas plants. Many of these plants have been forced, at some time or other, to use coal that has been stored for several years. Such coal may fail to coke at all, or it may produce a dirty appearing, weak coke of reduced value. The yields of salable by-products may also be distinctly lowered. For permanent structure underground, where rock is not competent, support usually consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, temporary supports in the form of timber or steel are often needed during construc-tion. Although the history of rock bolting is relatively short—50 years— their use has become widespread in general engineering construction as well as mining. This profusely illustrated and detailed study covers a broad range in the field of rock belting: from the behavior of rock and bolts including rock properties, masses, and structure; mathematical formulae for rock bolt applications; through analysis of various operations and descriptions of the bolts themselves. Rock construction is one of the oldest of the engineering arts and its origin is lost in antiquity. From the days when early man decided that he wanted to improve the natural caves which he was using for shelter and protection or made a river crossing by placing rocks to form a ford or causeway, we have had structures made of rock. It is not too much to say that rock in situ as a structural material forms part of every major engineering undertaking. Rock bolting is one means whereby the inherently good characteristics of rock in situ are preserved and used to the best advantage and the bad characteristics ameliorated. In many cases the latter are accentuated by construction processes used. Rock bolting, as with other rock construction techniques, is only just beginning to emerge from being an art. Consequently, its theory and practice is still more descriptive than mathematical. ROCK BOLTING In underground excavations, where the rock is not competent, support is provided. For the permanent structure, this generally consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, support may be needed during construction before the concrete can be placed, and conventionally this consists of timber or steel support in the form of ribs, struts, and lagging. Alternatively, rock bolts may be used. Although their use dates back over 50 years, it is only in recent years that rock bolts have become widely used, not only in mining but in general engineering construction. A rock bolt is a steel bar which is inserted in a hole drilled in rock. The end away from the rock face has a device which permits it to be firmly an- chored in the hole and the projecting end is fitted with a plate which bears against the rock surface. The bolt is placed in tension between the anchor and the plate, thereby exerting a compressive force on the rock. The essential feature of a rock bolt is that it is placed in tension. This distinguishes it from anchor bars which are grouted into holes in rock, but which are not prestressed. The difference between an anchor bar and a rock bolt when the rock bolt is grouted in is analogous to the difference between the reinforcement in ordinary reinforced concrete and in prestressed reinforced concrete. The view that rock bolts only pin or nail blocks or slabs of rock which are loose to the sounder rock behind them is erroneous. Rock bolts are useful for this purpose and have been so used for a long time. However, the term rock bolting, as used here, means the designed use of rock bolts to reinforce and develop the rock around an excavation into a structural entity which can competently play its part in a structure such as a powerhouse or a mine installation. Rock bolts behave quite differently than steel ribs. They can be installed at the working face directly after blasting and within a short space of time can be exerting a stabilizing pressure on the loosened rock surface. This early installation not only partially restores loosened blocks of rock to their original unloosened positions, but also it prevents the gradual relaxation or loosening of the decompression zone behind the new rock face. In contrast, steel ribs generally use timber blocks, wedges, and lagging between the ribs and the irregular rock surface. The timber is relatively compressible, and loosened blocks of rock must move outwards an appreciable distance before any load builds up on the steel ribs. Also, the ribs may settle as the foot blocks and foundation become compressed. Hence, it may take several days or weeks before the rock has moved sufficiently to make the steel ribs carry an effective load.

In connection with the problems of bumps in coal mines, much has been written concerning the manner in which roof action and methods of mining enter into the pressure effects observed but little has been written upon the relationship between the physical properties of coal and associated rocks and the cause of bumps. The question of the strength of bituminous coal, of its elasticity, and the energy it can absorb and store has been neglected to a considerable extent in connection with this problem. It is generally agreed that one of the necessary conditions for bumps is a strong coal.' Therefore, since the strength of coal is an important factor, a study of this property should be made. several investigators have conducted laboratory experiments upon the strength of coal, using small cubical or rectangular test pieces. An attempt will not be made to go into all of these investigations, but they are briefly summarized in Table I. Experiments of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and of Lawall and Holland (pp. 27 and 34 of ref. 9), however, indicate that regardless of whether the coal is a soft and weak semihituminous (Pocahontas No 3) or a hard and strong bituminous (Stockton) coal, the maximum ultimate unit stress developed in laboratory tests is higher in small cubes than in larger cubes of the Same coal.

Production of crude oil in Venezuela for the year 1937 was 186,653,-916 bbl., as compared with 155,228,982 bbl. produced in 1936, an increase of almost 31,500,000 bbl. The oil-field strike, which started on Dec. 14, 1936, lasted until Jan. 25, 1937, when a total of 10,000,000 bbl. of production was estimated to have been lost (5,750,000 bbl. in 1936 and the remainder in 1937). Of the total of 186,653,916 bbl. produced in 1937, the Lagunillas field contributed 45.6 per cent, a drop of approximately 10 per cent under 1936 figures; Tia Juana, 14.3 per cent; Quiriquire field, 14.0 per cent; La Rosa area, 13.3 per cent and the Mene Grande field, 7.6 per cent, these being the five leading contributors of the year's production. Detailed production figures by fields and by companies are shown on Table 1. Of the total production of Venezuela the following four major companies accounted for the greater proportion: Standard of Venezuela and Lago Petroleum Corporation together, 48.3 per cent; Shell, 37.4 per cent and Venezuela Gulf, 14.0 per cent. At the end of the year, 2491 wells were producing, of which number 1291 wells were pumpers, or about 52 per cent. Production The accompanying statistics of production record of Venezuela oil fields from its inception to Dec. 31, 1937, shown on Table 2, indicates that the cumulative production reached 1,503,283,228 bbl. In order of importance, Lagunillas leads all the fields, having accounted for about 50 per cent of Venezuelan production, followed by La Rosa area, which produced about 21 per cent; Mene Grande, which produced about 13 per cent, and Quiriquire, which produced 6.5 per cent. Table 3 shows the age of each field. Mene Grande is the oldest, having produced for 24 years; Tarra is next, 21 1/2 years old, and El Mene third, 171/2 years. The gravity of the crude from the various fields, also shown on Table 3, remained unchanged, the only addition being the new Tia Juana field, which averages 15.6' A.P.I. Table 4 shows the method of production by fields as of Jan. 1, 1938; at the end of the year 2491 wells were producing, compared with 2005 wells producing at the beginning of 1937, or an increase of 486 wells. The completions for the year reached 512. Of the 2491 wells producing crude oil, 1291 wells, or approximately 52 per cent, were pumping, 925 (approximately 37 per cent) were flowing naturally and 275 (11 per cent) were on
