In 2003, Independence Group NL purchased the Long Shaft Nickel Mine complex (Long) in Kambalda, Western Australia. Lightning Nickel, the nickel operating arm of Independence Group, faced considerable challenges operating the mine, with the most significant challenge being able to prove that the remnant ore at Long and the associated orebodies could be mined safely and efficiently. Given the seismic history at Long, the magnitude of these challenges could not be underestimated. In an effort to achieve 100 per cent extraction of the flatter orebodies, traditional methods such as room and pillar were dismissed. A method consisting of transverse sills, butting into each other was proposed. To stop fill material from the first sill rilling into the adjoining sill, it was proposed to backfill the sills with pumped cement fill. The capital cost of the fill plant was estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million and the cost for cement alone was $1.0 million per annum. Shotcrete was already an extremely useful tool in dealing with the widely variable stress environment, but was to be used in an innovative manner that would enable the full extraction of a tabular section of the Victor South orebody. A layer of shotcrete, approximately 100 mm thick, was to be sprayed on the up dip wall of the initial development sill. The sill was to be backfilled with ænormalÆ development waste and ætoppedÆ with sand backfill. The next sill, ie slightly up dip and alongside, was to be mined along the shotcrete boundary wall. With respect to wall stability, the premise was that the shotcrete wall would stay in place and prevent the backfill (development waste and sand) from rilling into the adjoining development. It was also proposed that any breaches of the shotcrete wall would be repaired using shotcrete before substantial inflow of backfill into the ænewÆ development. "Considerable metal values are often locked in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, heap leach pads, slags, reverts, etc.) and process equipment (bins, holding tanks, thickeners, etc.). This is more than enough to justify accurate accounting of such in-process metal inventories from both financial accounting and operational perspective. However, accurately determining the metal inventory of an in-process unit is often a challenge in industrial practice. Audits have shown that available indirect or direct measurements often carry large inaccuracies. Sooner or later, ignoring these measurement errors lead to unexpected incoherencies in reported metal balances. In such situations, coherent metal balances are then achieved through subjective and sometimes significant adjustments of in-process inventory levels. While such metal accounting methods applied by mineral processing engineers used to be rarely challenged, they are now being increasingly scrutinised by various stakeholders. Hence, metal accounting procedures that mitigate subjectivity in adjustments while still coping with the unavoidable uncertainty are more relevant than ever.This paper reviews three different metal accounting methods for reporting in-process metal inventory values. Their individual application strongly depends on the available measurements i.e. The indirect method where the metal inventory of a given process unit is determined by subtracting the cumulative reclaim from the cumulative feed carries important flaws. The direct method also comes with challenging accuracy issues so that emptying a process unit is often the best available inventory measurement. This reality is recognised for by further analysing a previously proposed operating mode where two interchangeable process units are alternately used. The third investigated method is the redundant method which combines indirect and direct methods for a given process unit. A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for the removal of iron oxides from Weipa pisolitic bauxite. The technique involves the chemical reduction ofthe iron oxides by carbon, followed by selective removal of the iron species by acid leaching or chlorination.To remove more than 90 per cent of the iron it is necessary to reduce the iron oxides substantially to iron metal by heating the bauxite, pre-calcined at 650-800°C, with reactive carbon at 1040-1100°C. Reduction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hercynite (FeO.Al2O3) and difficulties have been encountered in reducing hercynite formed under less favourable reduction conditions.Following reduction, efficient selective removal of iron species is readily effected by acid leaching using dilute hydrochloric acid at 100°C, or chlorination at 500-750°C using Cl2, Cl2/N2, or Cl2/N2/CO mixtures.After removal of unreacted carbon, the final products contain 0·5-1.0 per cent Fe203 and 87-92 per cent Al203.

Upgrading of a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample provided by Kingstream Steel Ltd was investigated using low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse flotation. The ore contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina, with the main minerals in the ore being amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent) and quartz (14 per cent). The concentrate obtained after low intensity magnetic separation contained 66.6 per cent iron and 6.34 per cent silica with an iron recovery of 72 per cent. This concentrate was further treated by reverse flotation to increase the iron content and reduce the silica content to meet the requirements for direct reduction iron (DRI) feed grade.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

The Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit, located at the southern end of the Waitekauri Corridor, Hauraki Goldfield, occurs as quartz veins with associated alteration haloes. Integrated geophysical studies were undertaken to determine the expression, location, and extent of these alteration zones. Aeromagnetic data show an extensive, magnetic æquietÆ zone over Karangahake and the southern Rahu Ridge that represents a zone of magnetite destruction resulting from hydrothermal alteration. Analytic signal data are used to define the boundary of this zone; the resulting 6 km2 area is elongate north-south with an irregular boundary. A detailed gravity survey over the area reveals a positive residual gravity anomaly, up to 30 gu in amplitude, over the Karangahake deposit. Density measurements on near-surface rocks give low values indicating that the source of this positive gravity anomaly must be deep; possible causative bodies include an igneous intrusion or dense sulfide mineralisation. To the west and east of the host Waipupu Formation, strong gravity gradients of 100 gu/km and 65 gu/km reflect the faulted boundary of the Hauraki Rift, and the edge of the Waihi Basin respectively. High resolution airborne radiometric data define a 2.2 km2 area of potassium enrichment. This area is elongate north-south and has an irregular boundary. It coincides approximately with the centre of the magnetic quiet zone and the peak of the gravity high, and correlates with known areas of intense mineralisation. Anomalously high potassium counts and elevated K/Th ratios correlate with areas of potassic alteration that have undergone K-metasomatism. Underexplored portions of this zone may indicate areas of gold-silver prospectivity. Combined geophysical data therefore reveal the extent of hydrothermal alteration, and the central zone of Kmetasomatism that is most likely to contain orebodies.

The Australian mining industry faces skills shortages across a broad spectrum of disciplines and levels, as it enters another major growth phase. Critical amongst the areas of most significant shortage in the professional sphere is the discipline of geotechnical professionals. More mines, deeper mines, ageing workforces are all contributing to this chronic shortage. But the shortage is not just at the operating sites, it is across a range of employment fields including sites, head offices, consultants, researchers and educators. This paper reviews the status of a number of these fields and explores some of the issues being faced. The different roles of a site geotechnical professional and a specialist geotechnical consultant are explored, together with some of the trends in terms of how such people are operating, and the skills they are expected to have to fulfill their job requirements. The paper also considers the move towards possible mandatory statutory geotechnical positions at mine sites and some of the implications if this were to come into force. Finally, the paper considers the current provider programs for mining geotechnical education, and how additional offerings are going to be needed in order to address the current shortages and the inconsistencies in terms of job expectations for people assigned to geotechnical roles without adequate education and training.

An important consideration in any mining operation is waste disposal management. Tailings management at Macraes gold mine allows for the disposal of tailings into fully engineered embankment dams and overburden material to be incorporated as construction material into those embankment dams. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous materials used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, typically accounting for 5–25 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. Like other ferrous materials, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on stable operation and productivity of a blast furnace. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is inevitably subjected to thermal shock, which will likely lead to breakdown of the lump particles, or decrepitation and affect the gas permeability inside the blast furnace adversely. An ISO decrepitation test has therefore been developed to assess this behaviour of lump ore. However, the results obtained according to the existing standard decrepitation test method vary considerably between laboratories even for the same lump ore. To improve the test procedure of the existing decrepitation test, this paper first discusses the mechanisms leading to decrepitation and then studies the factors affecting lump ore decrepitation. Understanding the key factors affecting lump ore decrepitation is particularly important to improve the existing test procedure that enables researchers to achieve a higher degree of precision when conducting the decrepitation test.CITATION:Lu, L, Adam, M, Hapugoda, S and Kilburn. Extensive use of diesel-powered mobile equipment in modern mines for materials handling, such as load-haul-dump machines, constitute a significant source of heat, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter. Provision of sufficient quantities of fresh, cool air are required to remove such atmospheric contaminants from the environment for miners, particularly at depths where ventilation constraints and associated operating costs have an increasingly adverse impact. An alternative solution to diesel equipment to combat economic, environmental, social and health challenges, are battery electric vehicles (BEV), with the potential to expand production and substantially reduce ventilation and cooling demand, subsequently reducing operating costs. In this context, this paper focuses on the introduction of a battery electric loader to a diesel fleet at one of the deepest underground mines in Australia, the CSA Mine, a high-grade copper operation in Cobar, New South Wales. Analysis of a trial battery electric loader compared to existing diesel machines is performed with regards to infrastructure, technical and operational issues. Key benefits of battery electric vehicles over conventional diesel-powered vehicles are discussed, including lower energy consumption and greater efficiency, reduction of emissions and heat, reduced need for ventilation and lower operating costs. Challenges of introducing BEVs into an operation, along with the results from the comparative study are addressed under impacts to energy consumption, equipment selection, effects on ventilation and cooling, mine design and economic viability for future fleet implementation scenarios whilst meeting production targets.

Interest in the tantalum-niobium minerals has been greatly stimulated in Western Australia by the fact that these rare minerals occur at numerous localities in that State, and in the adjoining parts of the Northern Territory, sometimes in mineable concentrations, as at Wodgina and Greenbushes. A large proportion of the world's tantalum comes from these deposits. The late Dr. E. S. Simpson, in particular, made an extensive study of the chemistry and mineralogy of these minerals, and the following observations are based upon the examination of specimens which he and Mr. H. Bawley, Government Mineralogist of Western Australia, have submitted to me for examination from time to time. The fact that so many of the specimens have been analysed provides a unique opportunity for the interpretation of the phenomena observed in the polished sections.TANTALITE-COLUMBITE SERIESIt has long been considered, on the basis of crystallographic form, chemical analyses, and specific gravity measurements, that ferrotantalite (FeO. Taz05), manganotantalite (MnO. Taz05)' ferrocolumbite (FeO. Nbz0 5), and manganocolumbite (MnO. Nbz0 5 ) form a complete isomorphous solid solution series (Simpson, 1937) and this is confirmed by study of polished sections of these minerals, Pehrman (1929) examined a series of five analysed specimens with Nbz0 5 contents as follows:-

An accurate measure of the earth's magnetic field can be made in a few seconds with the portable proton precession magnetometer. Such an instrument increases the applicability of the long successful method of magnetic prospecting for minerals. As an example of the usefulness of the proton magnetometer, a survey over volcanic rocks near Apsley (Tas.) was made.INTRODUCTIONA completely portable magnetometer whose operation is based on the free precession of polarized protons in the earth's magnetic field, is now available on the market at a price competitive with magnetometers based on the classical physical principles. The ease, accuracy, rapidity, and reliability with which measurements of the earth's total magnetic field can be made with the proton precession magnetometer, led to the try-out of the instrument in an actual field problem so as to evaluate fully the capabilities of the instrument. Such evaluation is important, because the history of magnetic prospecting has shown that whenever significantly improved instrumentation has been introduced, prospecting costs have been substantially cut and many areas in which the prospecting costs were formerly considered excessive in relation to probable returns, have become economic mineral prospects. Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project's development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the 'company'. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

Development of aggregate resources for use in structural concrete has been encouraged in Japan to support infrastructure improvement and national land conservation. Natural aggregate is a valuable resource necessary for sound economic development, and its importance is growing. After completion of aggregate mining projects, planting and afforestation are implemented. But sandy soil in excavation sites is not optimum for the growth of vegetation, and many years are needed before forests are restored. Planting techniques should be improved to support efficient reforestation in a shorter period of time. For this purpose, problems hampering growth of vegetation must to be solved through application of physical and physicochemical techniques to ensure that the environment and the ecosystem will be conserved in project sites.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. Comparing Energy Efficiency of Multi-Pass High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) Circuits With increased emphasis on reducing costs and carbon emissions in mineral processing, it is becoming essential to employ the most efficient comminution devices and to use them to maximum effect. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are considered highly efficient compared with other devices, however their relative efficiency in multi-HPGR circuits is less well understood. A series of comminution tests was carried out to evaluate three multi-pass HPGR circuits and a jaw crusher-ball mill circuit. Combinations of HPGR units (1.0 m and 0.25 m diameter), jaw crushers and Bond ball mills were used to grind a 32 mm top size porphyry copper feed (BBWI = 12.1) to a product P80 size of about 150 ¦m. Up to three passes of HPGR were used in each circuit, with energy measurement and size analysis at each point in the comminution process. The energy efficiencies of individual comminution stages and of the overall circuits were quantified and evaluated using three different approaches. The operating work index method for comparing comminution energy efficiency underestimated HPGR performance due to the large amount of fines generated. The -75 ¦m efficiency factor and F50/P50 reduction ratio interpolation methods both give a fairer measure because they better take into account the amount of fines generated by HPGR. The results show that the relative comminution efficiencies of the three multi-pass HPGR circuits tested differ by as much as 22%, providing insights as how to best employ HPGR in a comminution circuit. The most energy efficient of the circuits tested was a three-pass HPGR circuit with a 1.0 m diameter roll on the first pass in closed circuit with an 8 mm screen followed by a second and third pass in a 0.25 m roll.

The source and transport regions of fluidised (transported) breccias outcrop in the Cloncurry Fe-oxide-Cu-Au district, providing insights into the origins of other fluidised magmatic-hydrothermal breccias such as kimberlites. Discordant dikes and pipes with rounded clasts of metasedimentary calc-silicate rocks and minor felsic and mafic intrusions extend several kilometres upwards and outwards from the contact aureole of the 1530 Ma Williams Batholith into overlying schists and amphibolites. The brecciation initiated at depths >10 km and may have resulted in surface breaching. We used analytical equations for particle transport to estimate clast velocities (eÆ 20 ms-1), approaching volcanic ejecta rates (up to 80 ms-1). The wide range of CO2 fluid inclusion densities (up to 150 MPa), the localisation of the base of the breccias in contact aureoles, and the scale and discordancy of the bodies suggests the breccia transport process was triggered by an abrupt release of overpressured fluid. At these depths, such extreme behaviour may have been achieved by release of dissolved fluids from crystallising magma, in combination with a strongly fractured and fluid-laden source, sitting under a strong, low permeability barrier, and such parameters may be analogous to the asthenosphere/lithosphere boundary in the case of kimberlite initiation. The relationship of these breccias to the Ernest Henry iron-oxide-Cu-Au deposit suggests they may have been either fertile or æfailedÆ orebody feeders.

Active geothermal fields show many of the characteristics seen in hydrothermal ore deposits but there are important differences as well. There are, for example, many differences in geology and chemistry between individual geothermal fields, even some nearby, and these include variations in host rock types (volcanic, sedimentary, plutonic and metamorphic), structures controlling fluid flow (normal, lateral, and, rarely, reverse faulting occur) and hydrological setting (valleys to elevated terrain).

The need for formalised geotechnical reporting has not been fully explored at many operations. With the continuing need to provide safer and more efficient workplaces, the requirement for good geotechnical reporting systems (as with other reporting systems) has become of greater importance.Historically, the risk from rockfalls has been the largest cause of fatal injuries in the underground mining industry. The response of the ground to mining is generally poorly documented at many mines. At Olympic Dam, it was found that the existing corporate hazard and incident reporting (HIR) procedure did not record enough specifics about geotechnical issues. A separate and more specific geotechnical reporting process was set up to address this problem.This paper examines the role that geotechnical reporting plays at the WMC Resources Olympic Dam Mine; from reporting and rectifying day-to-day geotechnical issues that affect the operation to documenting and analysing longer term trends.
