A detailed study of the capital investment and production cost for copper electrowinning plants shows that significant savings in both can be achieved by increasing the current density. From the economic analysis it is determined that the optimum current density which will result in lowest capital investment and lowest operating cost is between 60 A/sq. ft. and 70 A/sq. ft., or at least three times as high as the Conventionally employed current density. The specific investment, expressed as $/ton-year, is found to be a function of both the current density and plant capacity and has a minimum value at the optimum current density. Empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the capital investment and operating cost for plants of any production capacity operating at any current density.

THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor's duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. What shall we say of a man who explains how to measure the depths of shafts to the hundredth part of an inch by means of short brass rods screwed together...

Supergene processes in banded iron formation (BIF) result in important dissolution, material transport and simultaneous disorder of the residual bands. The rock physical properties such as density, porosity and rheology change during the weathering attack. The itabirite, Paleoproterozoic metamorphic BIF from Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) û Brazil, shows several weathered facies. Strong linking between topographic surface, rock density and iron grade occurs within the weathered zones. This linking is due to partial dissolution of silica and carbonate from itabirite and gravitational rotation and break of the remaining blades, generating kink-like slump structures. The original itabirite density, 3.7 t/m3, decrease at the first leaching steps, until 2.7 t/m3, and increase at the end of the leaching process until 3.6 t/m3. Iron grade increases from 38 per cent to 68 per cent and depressions (sinkhole), subsequently filled by Cenozoic basinal sediments, are developed over the enrichment zones. The formation of important supergene iron ore deposits of QF is intimately related to such a process. Several iron deposits at QF, such as Pico do Itabirito, Fßbrica Nova, Casa de Pedra, Tamanduß, -gua Claras, Cappo Xavier, etc., reveal the aspects related to the proposed evolution, implying that the formational process of the soft iron ores had a regional character. Granular medium model helped in the understanding of the development of the structure and the formation of the deposits. A numerical model has been developed in order to simulate a leaching system in a two-dimensional matrix, composed of two types of materials: leachable and unleachable. Equal volume proportion and vertical banding were considered. Drilling data was used as multipoint attractors to remove leachable matrix nodes.

Metal-rich slurries discharged from excess-enthalpy geothermal wells at Kawerau (NZ) indicate that an efficient ore precipitation mechanism operates in some feedzones. In our conceptual model, which takes into account the relative permeabilities of liquid and gas phases in boiling fluids, a metal-precipitating liquid phase is effectively immobilised along boiling fronts, leading to the formation of highly concentrated ore. Chemical equilibrium and heat/mass transport modelling demonstrate the general applicability of this conceptual model to hydrothermal eruption environments.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

Nowadays, the demand for a finer grind in minerals processing has set new challenges within the industry, particularly for grinding technology. Apart from a finer grind, energy efficiency is also a key driver in optimising comminution technology.Stirred milling technology, already proven in many other industries, delivers a modern, sophisticated, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding in minerals processing. Fine grinding technology is utilised particularly in concentrate regrinding to complete the liberation of valuable minerals after the first stage of concentration. Maintaining the correct particle and particle size distribution of the regrind product is crucial for downstream process performance. Stirred milling technology offers the unique possibility for online control and optimisation of the regrind product particle size. This paper describes the basis of this online control possibility and discusses the implementation of stirred milling technology in minerals processing, particularly in regrinding applications. There is a significant amount of historical mining and exploration information available. This information is often distributed throughout a number of reports or plans, available from a variety of sources, and in many differing formats. The ability to capture paper-based historical information in a modem digital format provides mining and exploration companies with valuable information that can be used in a number of ways; for example, reassessments of exploration or mining work previously undertaken, or used in conjunction with current exploration information.   The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, to present the paper-based historical information; highlighting some of the problems encountered, solutions to those problems, and any assumptions used. Secondly, to present the historical data in digital format, and demonstrate the tools available to analyse geological and associated information, and finally, to illustrate some of the potential future applications of the information, including mining optimisation, mine design and scheduling.   The Glenorchy scheelite/gold prospect has been used as an example. Within the overall prospect two smaller areas were selected. The Mount McIntosh and surrounding areas, focuses on exploration and surface excavation information. The Mount Judah area (State and Kelly-Taylor workings) focuses on underground mining and exploration information.

Conventional hand drawn isopach maps of the cover of the Bulli Seam are too eomplex for use in the delineation of large domains of similar cover. Isopach maps prepared from trend surfaces fitted to the cover data are much simpler in form and so provide a convenient method of delineating broad domains of similar cover.

Some Otago quartz veins display spectacular open-space filling textures indicative of shallow formation. Fluid inclusions in some such veins show that fluid immiscibility occured before or during mineral deposition. This immiscibility or 'boiling' occured at depths ranging from about 3 km to within as little as about 100 metres of the paleo-surface. Temperatures of mineralization range from 190 - 250¦C. Metals deposited in these veins include: Au(+Ag), Hg, Sb and As. Hydrothermal alteration is confined to minor silicifation of immediate wall-rock schist, less than about two metres from the veins. These veins have some similarities to classical epithermal systems elsewhere in the world, although wall-rock alteration is much less developed in Otago. From analogy to these classical epithermal systems, it is speculated that gold mineralisation may be found beneath Otago stibnite and cinnabar localities.

To George Orwell the year of 1984 was the inspiration for a book. To most New Zealanders it was the year that the fourth Labour Government was elected to power. It was also the year that the review of mining legislation commenced. While Orwell's book and the election of Labour are clearly events of some historic note, one could be excused for classifying the review of minerals legislation somewhat differently in terms of its present achievements! Since the review began it has led a tortuous path through a rapidly evolving policy environment to a point three years hence where no major policies have been determined.

In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag. The further expansion of New Zealand Steel's primary steelmaking capacity to replace the currently imported hot and cold flat rolled products is under consideration. The requirement to produce about 600 000 tonnes of steel slabs will be an opportunity to further modify iron and steel making plant and processes to optimise the economics. The conceptual and preliminary engineering selection of options is described.

Mining and metallurgical processing of gold and base metal ores often results in solid wastes and effluents containing high concentrations of arsenic. In addition, arsenic can be released to the atmosphere from gold roasters and base metal smelters. Speciation of arsenic in roaster products, in a stack sample from a copper smelter, in organic soils impacted by smelter emissions, and in an anaerobic effluent treatment system at a smelter site was determined in order to broaden our understanding of the nature and occurrence of arsenic in a wider range of metallurgical wastes. Micro-XANES spectra obtained from iron oxide particles forming in a gold roaster indicate preferential enrichment of As3+ species in maghemite-rich domains and microlayers. In comparison, haematite-rich iron oxide particles are dominated by As5+ species. It appears that maghemite is retarding oxidation of arsenic and its volatilisation during roasting. Arsenic occurs as both As3+ and As5+ species in a stack sample emitted from a Cu smelter, confined to fine-grained secondary product layers accumulated on the surfaces of spherical Cu particles. This is probably resulting from condensation of As species upon cooling following their volatilisation during the combustion process. Soil samples collected at various distances from the Cu smelter are dominated by As5+ species including monomethylarsonic acid and tetramethylarsonium iodide as the organic arsenic species. The presence of reduced As3+ species highlights the importance of organic material influencing the speciation of arsenic and mineralogical transformations taking place within the soil profile. The XANES spectra indicate that arsenic occurs predominantly as aqueous arsenite species in the anaerobic treatment system, contrary to the conventional thinking of As retention by the formation of secondary sulfides.

It should be stating the æbleeding obviousÆ to say that the most efficient method of recovery must be used during the testing and evaluation phases of an orebody. Furthermore, the company will be literally throwing away money by not using the most efficient recovery plant during mining. This is especially true in the case of a low concentration/high value commodity such as diamonds. Unfortunately, this economic recovery criterion is not always the driving force. Some inexperienced companies think that they can preserve capital by using cheaper, and generally less efficient, recovery plants to mine their product. This philosophy is invariably a fallacy. Furthermore, it is also important to use the correct sized plant for the proposed task. It is no use trying to use a small testing plant to treat large quantities of ore, as this may result in loss of recovery efficiency. The converse is equally true.

It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

In 2010 a store and release cover (the cover) was constructed on the south waste rock dump (SWRD) at Century mine. This also included aerial seeding of province native trees and shrub seeds. The purpose of the cover is to reduce percolation into the potentially acid-forming (PAF) waste rock by maintaining a compacted reduced permeability layer (RPL) at near-saturated conditions. This is achieved by overlaying the RPL with a 1.5 to 2 m thickness of soil-mulch. The soil-mulch has a hummocky final surface that captures rainfall, so it does not runoff, allowing it in part to infiltrate, with excess water removed by evaporation and transpiration. The RPL is the trafficked surface of the SWRD.The unsaturated behaviour of the cover is being monitored by instrumentation including volumetric water content and matric suction sensors and a weather station capable of estimating evapotranspiration. The instrumentation allows for direct measurement of infiltration into the cover, storage of rainfall, percolation through the base of the cover and in situ soil water characteristic curves (SWCC).The key functions used to describe the unsaturated behaviour of the cover materials is the SWCC and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function. The SWCC is a plot of soil water versus soil suction. It provides the loci of moisture states of a soil from the saturated to the dry state.The paper presents the results of five years of monitoring. It shows that total infiltration into the top of the SWRD was about 1.6 – 3.7% of cumulative rainfall over five years, with most of the infiltration going into storage within the cover. Runoff from the top of the dump is not allowed therefore, the remaining 95% of the total rainfall was lost to evaporation or as lateral flow when infiltration reached the RPL. The paper presents some simple analyses of the wetting by rainfall infiltration of the cover, leading to breakthrough at the base. Field data are used to support the analyses.Presentation of the SWRD water balance is also included in the paper using SVFLUX™GE which is a finite element model that simulates water transport through a saturated or unsaturated medium.CITATION:Defferrard, P and Rohde, T, 2018. Gold placers in the Nokomai and Nevis valleys are dominantly Quaternary in age. They occur mainly in western tributaries of the upper Nevis, eastern tributaries of the middle and upper Nokomai, and in the trunk valleys themselves. Placer gold in both valleys is dominantly a-phase Au-Ag-Hg alloy. Au-Ag alloy is absent or rare in most of the deposits, except in the lower Nokomai. Alpha-Au-Ag-Hg alloy is typically coarse-grained (up to 2 cm), angular, and rarely flattened or folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and psuedo-hexagonal crystal-pluck cavities are common. Fluvial transport distance predicted from the maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag-Hg alloy particles is typically less than 10-20 km. Coarse (up to 2 cm) cinnabar is commonly associated with the Au-Ag-Hg alloy, and both were probably derived from hydrothermal sources in western tributaries ofthe upper Nevis and eastern tributaries of the upper Nokomai. Minor secondary Au-Ag-Hg alloy occurs locally in the lower Nokomai, where it coats or cements detrital a-phase Au-Ag-Hg and Au-Ag alloy particles. Au-Ag alloy dominates over Au-Ag-Hg alloy in the lower half of the lower Nokomai alluvial plain and gravel of a raised channel incised into semischist basement adjacent to the plain. The Au-Ag alloy is rounded and commonly flattened and folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and pluck cavities are rare, and a fluvial transport distance of 25-40 km is estimated from maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag alloy particles. The Au-Ag alloy, three types of gamet, magnetite, clinozoisite and well foliated schist boulders in the abandoned channel are not found in the pumpellyite-actinolite facies bedrock in the Nokomai. These components were derived from greenschist facies schist and sedimentary sources in Otago, many tens of kilometers north of the Nokomai catchment. They were transported to the Nokomai either in Wakatipu Glacier till or fluvio-glacial outwash that entered the valley via Nokomai Saddle, the confluence with the Mataura, or both.

Geotechnical instrumentation has been implemented as a key step for monitoring and optimising an engineered mine design for managing seismicity at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine. Measurements of displacement, stress change, ground control element load and seismic response of the rock mass allow for back analysis and calibration of critical parameters for feedback into the engineering design loop. Instrument clusters are installed in strategic locations prior to the commencement of stoping in order to determine the nature of the response of the rock mass to stoping. A selection of instruments including instrumented cable bolts and rod extensometers, resistance wire extensometers, hollow inclusion stress cells, vibrating wire stress meters and resistance wire extensometers are used to gather data through a data logging system. The rate at which data is recorded is adjusted to provide more information during periods of anticipated rapid change such as around stope firings or during periods of high seismic activity, and less information during periods of anticipated quiescence. The twofold purpose of the instrumentation is to calibrate the numerical modelling output which forms the basis of the engineered mine design, and to provide an alert mechanism where the behaviour of the rock mass is not what was anticipated, or where the impact of that behaviour may compromise the integrity of the engineered ground control system. The paper describes the location of instrument clusters with respect to stoping, the type of instruments employed and the method of data acquisition. It provides examples of results obtained and illustrates the way in which that information is used to optimise the mine design and manage seismicity.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for <20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream.

Tin mineralization in both eastern and western Tasmania shows a spatial correlation with middle Palaeozoic biotite granites and adamellites. The range of composition of these granitic rocks is restricted with respect to Mg, K, and Na content. Because this compositional restriction is shown by granitic rocks from other tin provinces, the concept of a genetic relationship between these granites and the associated tin mineralization is reinforced, and similar concentration mechanisms may be involved.Gold mineralization is largely restricted to eastern Tasmania and in contrast to the tin mineralization is rarely spatially associated with the middle Palaeozoic granitic rocks, although most authors have suggested a genetic correlation with hornblende and/or biotite granodiorites.Although few analyses are available, the granodiorites that are spatially associated with gold deposits exhibit similarities to granitic rocks from gold provinces elsewhere. These features suggest a possible genetic relationship between gold mineralization and the granodiorites.The composition of granitic rocks may be used as an aid to exploration in delineating areas of potential tin and gold mineralization in granite terrains.
