The REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry) stream sediment geochemistry database of open file mining company data, managed by GNS Science, was recently made accessible via the internet (http://maps.gns.cri.nz/website/minmap/). REGCHEM provides coverage of selected elements in mineral rich areas of New Zealand. Analysis of REGCHEM data highlights problems with inconsistencies between different surveys in terms of sampling methods, number and types of elements analysed, analytical techniques and detection limits. New, consistent multi-element geochemical surveys with national coverage are required. To test sampling, analytical and data treatment techniques for the new surveys, a pilot stream sediment geochemical survey was carried out in the Thames area, Hauraki Goldfield. Seventy samples were collected in an area of 220 km2 representing about one sample every 3 km2. The samples were analysed for 50 elements, mostly by XRF.   Regional patterns are apparent in the concentrations of some elements. Several elements, such as As, Cd, Cu, K, Pb, Sb, Se, and Zn exhibit anomalous concentrations mainly in the western part of the study area, related to Au-Ag-Zn-Pb-Cu epithermal quartz veins and porphyry Cu occurrences in hydrothermally altered andesitic terrane.   Mercury is anomalous in southern samples, reflecting cinnabar occurrences in the Kauaeranga valley (eg Mangakirikiri), and the occurrence of cinnabar as a late stage mineral in some of the Thames epithermal veins. Ba and U are anomalous in the eastern samples, and these anomalies are probably related to the presence of rhyolitic rocks in the eastern part of the project area.

The single track North Strathfield Rail Underpass (NSRU) consists of a dive structure either end of a 148 m long driven tunnel skewed under three live railway tracks. The tunnel is 8 m high, 9 m wide, with a horseshoe profile, excavated by full face using a road header. Ground cover varied between 2.5 m to 3.5 m. Settlements were 5 mm to 15 mm (the latter due to a dyke). A one pass synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete lining was installed (no lattice girders or steel sets were used). A system of automated robotic total stations was used to provide real time monitoring of the rail track and associated ground formation. One of the most significant problems experienced in land reclamation work has been the tendency of earthmovers to over-compact the subsoils and topsoils. The need for extensive subsoil drainage, because of over-compaction, becomes a very expensive exercise and can be attributed to poor planning. The problem has been addressed both at the Waihi and Huntly open-cast mines through the use of low ground pressure machines in the placement of subsoils and contouring. The use of subsoilers working to contour to aerate the soils is essential to integrate both the sub and topsoils so that significant root growth and drainage is established. Waihi's rainfall (approximately 200 mm annually) and light soils create difficulties in preparing for the final seed bed. A noticeable factor in preparation of the growing medium was the reaction of the lime particularly in the subsoils (damp), from a lumpy, quite heavy texture to almost a seed-bed texture within a period of approximately 72 hours. Also the high incidence of stone and debris which was not apparent in the placement of subsoils meant the job became very labour intensive. This will be overcome with the importation of a machine from the USA. All of the rubber tyred tractors used on these projects are four wheel drive in the 6S-aOhp range which for weight distribution and the safety factors allows for good landscaping techniques. Good engineering practices should ensure that slopes of no more than 3:1 be designed, keeping in mind that the long term planning must allow for maintenance and stock management of restored land.  In the preparation of the final growing medium the equipment used included: Caterpillar 05 LPG and blade; three-four wheel drive rubber tyre tractors; Super flow subsoiler; hydraulic twin spinner manure spreader; discs û two types; harrows; MF Seeder; Cambridge Roller and Duncan Rotatiller.

Process Options for Difficult Arid-Region Nickel Laterites In the absence of the discovery of significant nickel sulfide deposits, the future of Australia's nickel industry will increasingly depend on cost effect processes for low-grade nickel laterites. The problems encountered with the West Australian HPAL plants, resulting in three of the four plants being shut down, have caused the industry to revisit atmospheric leaching options, particularly heap leaching. West Australian laterites are characteristically very varied in grade, chemical composition and mineralogy with the result that, thus far, one process does not fit all laterites. In this paper the leaching of an especially refractory ore is compared using column leaching of whole ore and atmospheric leaching and HPAL processing of ground ore. The key characteristic is the resistance of the goethite phase to acid attack with low-to-moderate temperature leaching conditions. The refractory characteristic is attributed to the stabilising influence of chromium and aluminium and possibly manganese substitution in the goethite crystal structure and goethite morphology. A significant three-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt extractions under atmospheric leaching conditions was achieved by the relatively simple modification of bubbling sulfur dioxide into the reaction vessel to create a reducing environment. Recoveries increased from <30 per cent to 90 per cent nickel and 86 per cent cobalt after 10 hours of leaching at 95¦C. An even greater improvement was achieved under ambient conditions by heating the ore to temperatures above 250¦C for 30 minutes. Subsequent leaching at ambient temperature gave an eight-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt recoveries after 14 days bottle rolling. Both methods could be optimised and implemented in such a way as to increase laterite reserves in conjunction with a heap leach operation but may be better suited to vat or closed tank processing.

OZ Minerals Limited owns and operates the Prominent Hill Copper-Gold Mine, located 140 km southeast of Coober Pedy in far north South Australia. The Prominent Hill mine comprises an open cut mine with an initial 10 year mine-life and an 8 Mtpa conventional grinding and flotation plant to produce high quality copper-gold-silver concentrates, which are exported by road to local customers and by rail to the port of Darwin for shipment on to Southeast Asian smelters. Mine and process operations at Prominent Hill are licensed to abstract a water supply of up to 26 ML/d, sourced from a borefield located 40 km and extending to 80 km east of the mine. The arid climate of the broader Prominent Hill region means that groundwater is important for sustaining community and pastoral industries in the region, and security of water rights for third party users is a critically important water management issue posing a significant challenge to the development of Prominent Hill. Depth to water table and the typically high salinity of groundwater in the region means there is little environmental dependence on groundwater within the immediate Project area (mine lease and wellfields). The Prominent Hill mine and associated infrastructure lies within the South Australian Far North Prescribed Wells Area (FNPWA), which was principally defined to ensure the ongoing security of the ecologically, socially and culturally significant GAB springs, of which the closest are found around 150 km northeast of Prominent Hill, and only 50 km northeast of the water supply borefield. Prescribing of the FNPWA meant that OZ Minerals was required to demonstrate to both State and Federal Government agencies that the mine's water supply is independent of that which supports GAB springs and other third party water users in the region. Recognising these potential obstacles, OZ Minerals successfully defined and developed a previously unknown industrial quality groundwater resource, separate from other important groundwater resources in the region that supply community, pastoral and environmental users, ensuring third party water user sustainability.

Traditionally, capital costs of major resource development projects have been estimated as a single amount to which a percentage accuracy has been assigned based on the method of preparation of the estimate, that is, on the amount of information available to develop the estimate.However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of a probabilistic approach to capital cost estimates, and of a more rigorous calculation of estimate accuracies and of the presentation thereof. Accuracies can be expressed with more certainty as a percentage of the estimate amount where the percentage represents one standard distribution on the probability curve for the capital cost of that specific project. Thus confidence levels can be stated for various estimated amounts - for example, it can be stated that there is an 85% chance that a stated amount will not be exceeded, or a 90% certainty that a (higher) amount will not be exceeded. Moreover, the right skewness of the probability distribution curve for most projects can be readily recognised and reflected in the evaluations. This enables senior executives and board members to have a clearer understanding of investment uncertainties, and the possible magnitude of commitments.

During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company's concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. There are three distinct veins on this property - parallel, persistent, and dipping at an angle varying between 40° - 50° to the horizontal.The country rock is very sound, and timber, save for the small amount required for ore chutes, is entirely absent from all mine workings.The lode varies from a width of 1 in. to 8 in., but the stopes are carried forward with a minimurn width of about 30 in.The mine is particularly dry for a West Coast property, and conditions underground are very favourable. This paper describes a novel system for the biological sulfate reduction (BSR) of acid mine drainage (AMD) using primary sewage sludge (PSS) as carbon source in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor configuration. A UASB reactor was operated at a temperature of 35¦C and it received PSS (1875 mg/L COD) augmented with sulfate (1500 mg/L SO42-). The experimental results indicate that a high treatment efficiency was achieved at more than 90 per cent sulfate reduction at a liquid hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 13.5 h. In this study, the effects of various operational parameters were also investigated. The effect of a biomass recycle stream from the top to the bottom of the sludge bed was found to initiate rapid BSR from the bottom of the bed. Profile tests showed that effective and immediate sulfate reduction was achieved as soon as the influent entered the reactor. From these results, it can be concluded that the UASB configuration using PSS as energy source would be a viable method for the BSR of AMD.

A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of cadmium, lead, and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems for which the reaction rate was found to be completely solution phase mass transfer controlled.When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0·2 to 0·4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in rate which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomenon was observed in the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass transfer controlled.

The purpose of this paper is to therefore investigate the hydrogeological characteristics of tailings, coarse and mixed rejects from coal processing to enable better understanding of the potential for undrained behaviours in coal mine spoil piles. This is achieved by analysing the results from permeability and oedometer testing of tailings, coarse rejects and mixtures thereof. Focus is given to the effect that tailings content has on the behaviour of mixed rejects, the transition point between drained and undrained material behaviours, and the evolution of properties with increasing stress that would occur with increased depth of burial in a mine spoil pile. The implications of the findings are discussed with respect to spoil pile stability.

In order to reveal the correlation between the fundamental sintering characteristics of iron ores and their real sintering behaviours, a comprehensive evaluation index is proposed based on the measurement of four high temperature indexes, ie assimilation temperature, liquid phase bonding strength, liquid fluidity and calcium ferrite formation percentage, and the sintering pot tests of single ore fines and their blends. The results show that both the lowest assimilation temperature and liquid fluidity of ore blends appear to be the linear superposition of those of single iron ores except for the liquid phase bonding strength and calcium ferrite formation percentage. Furthermore, the tumble index of the sinter product obtained from blended iron ores also corresponds to a linear superposition of that of single ores, but not for the solid fuel rate and productivity. The comprehensive strength index YT exhibits a credible linear positive correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes, whereas the comprehensive productivity index YP possesses a lower correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes. The comprehensive strength index YT developed can predict the tumble index of the sinter product quite well, but the comprehensive productivity index YP cannot be used to evaluate the productivity effectively.CITATION:Zhu, D Q, Xue, Y X, Pan, J and Shi, B J, 2017. The efficiency of any iron ore value-adding operation is closely associated with detailed knowledge of the mineralogy, especially in the processing of lower grade and complex ores. There are a number of physico-chemical properties of iron oxide mineral phases (eg goethite, hematite and magnetite) that can be prudently exploited to enhance their processing efficiency. Recent iron ore studies on the upgrading of high-goethite iron ores have highlighted that the knowledge of the various phases of both iron oxide and gangue minerals is critical to the economic processing of these ores. Appropriate knowledge of this kind can lead to better-designed flow sheets for economically viable production of saleable products. With the increasing use of goethitic materials as blend components of iron ore concentrates for steelmaking, this review paper focuses on relevant beneficiation processes and the pivotal role of mineralogy and petrology in producing saleable iron oxide concentrates from ore blends. For goethites, mineral impurities including silica, phosphorus and alumina are very important. Geostatistical methods have become well established in the last two decades for the evaluation of ore reserves in base metal, industrial minerals, coal and gold deposits of the Witwatersrand type. However, there has been considerable debate about the applicability of geostatistical techniques when applied to vein-type gold deposits with hydro or epithermal mineralisation. The main problems stem from a lack of spatial continuity and the highly erratic sample values that characterise these deposits. This paper reviews some of the current geostatistical techniques that are applied to the evaluation of gold prospects.

Flotation process intensification is often achieved through changing chemical reagent scheme or flotation machine or both, which likely brings a hefty burden to the flotation plants in terms of capital or operating expenditure. A novel approach to flotation process intensification is the use of acoustic sound, which has been demonstrated to be effective in improving the flotation of various mineral systems with different type of flotation cells. This approach was based on the dynamic stabilisation effect of acoustic sound on the flotation froth. The present work aims to understand the influence of various experimental conditions on the effectiveness of the approach. First, the effects of sound frequency and amplitude were studied with column flotation of silica particles. Results showed that the flotation performance was improved only within a certain range of frequencies and above certain amplitude. The study was then extended to the mechanical flotation of quartz particles with various size ranges and at two solids concentrations. With sound, the recoveries of different size fractions within the range of 20–212 μm were all increased. In particular, the recovery of 150–212 µm particles was increased from 0 per cent to approximately 25 per cent, demonstrating the potential for extending the upper limit of particle size in flotation by using acoustic sound. Furthermore, mechanical flotation of chalcopyrite particles at various collector dosages (50–150 g/t) was carried out with and without sound. Results showed that the increment of the final flotation recovery was increased with sound at different collector dosages. Overall, acoustic sound has the potential to be used as an effective and versatile method for flotation process intensification.

Prominent among the ore minerals at Mt. Ellison, in the Brock's Creek district, Northern Territory, are a number of copper-bismuth sulphides wittichenite, aikinite, emplectite, in association with nativebismuth, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, sphalerite and linnaeite.Linnaeite and aikinite formed first and were followed by native bismuth. Wittichenite was later and substantially replaces earlier minerals. Replacement of aikinite by wittichenite has produced secondaryor reaction bismuth.INTRODUCTIONThe Brock's Creek district of the Northern Territory lies to the south east of Darwin and has been the locale of intermittent mining of small but rich deposits of diverse ore type. Gold, tin, and copper ores were recovered especially between 1890 and 1910 with minor exploitation up to the present time. Copper ores were of prior importance, the main production coming from supergene enriched deposits of chalcocite.The mines are situated in strongly folded Precambrian strata comprising slates, sandstones, volcanics and amphibolites with replaced haematitic rocks (Sullivan, 1953). The strata in the Brock's Creek area immediately north of the Darwin-Birdum railway line are domed around a roughly circular granitic mass some 5 miles in diameter. The Mount Ellison mine is located near the N.E. margin of the granite in metamorphosed basic country rock.Study of a series of polished sections from Mt. Ellison revealed the presence of linnaeite, chalcopyrite, bornite, aikinite, wittichenite, emplectite, bismuth, sphalerite, and chalcocite. With the exception of sphalerite and emplectite each of these minerals is prominently developed and intimately intergrown with the other constituents.

Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. According to the obtained results, this paper recommends FlowSim as an appropriate tool which can improve the design of production level in block caving and can enhance the prediction of the subsidence zone and dilution entry.CITATION:Castro, R, Hekmat, A, Fuentes, M, Armijo, F and Rodriguez, F, 2016. Mining at Waihi on the Martha Hill commenced in 1878 and between 1892 and 1953 produced 35 million ounces of bullion from some 13.5 million short tons of ore from 40 named quartz reefs. The general geology of the ore is recorded in detail with differing interpretations by Bell and Fraser (1912) and Morgan (1924). The reefs and stringers have formed by fissure filling and replacement in mainly quartz andesite dacite flows within the Waihi 'Graben'. The host rocks are extensively propylitised with intense alteration forming zones of kaolin adjacent to the main reefs.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%).
