Currently there are in excess of 200 companies listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange and the total market value of all the listed shares amounts to $4.6 billion. The number of listed mining companies stands at nine and with a market value of $35 million accounts for less than one per cent of the total market capitalisation. In comparison, the Australian mining and energy sectors account for nearly 50 per cent of the total market capitalisation, which currently exceeds A$41 billion. Surprisingly the share markets in both countries were primarily founded on the discoveries of minerals last century.

Granulation of the iron ore blend and the additives is the foremost step in the agglomeration of iron ore fines to achieve a permeable bed during sintering, which is crucial for sinter productivity. This study investigated the granulation of four types of blends to determine the impact of granulation on bed permeability. The blends were granulated in a rotating drum at various moisture contents and their JPU permeability was measured at each moisture content in a permeability pot (diameter 95 mm and height 500 mm) at various flow rates. Several independent experiments were carried out to investigate the changes in permeability when mixtures of different particle size range (-1 mm and +1 mm) were introduced into a packed bed with a larger particle size range (-6.3 mm to +4.0 mm). The results revealed that the addition of particles in the -1 mm size range had a more pronounced negative impact on permeability compared to particles in the +1 mm size range. This can be attributed to the relatively higher energy losses (mainly inertial) associated with the presence of -1 mm particles in the mixture. The findings were used to quantify the granulation process based on the -1 mm particle size fraction in the granulated mix and their utilisation (denoted by UI-1 mm). For achieving optimal permeability in a specific blend, it was found that a UI-1 mm (utility index of -1 mm particle size) ranging from 0.82 to 0.92 was required. However, exceeding a UI-1 mm value of 0.95 resulted in weaker granules prone to deformation and led to decreased bed permeability. The study also showed that the UI-1 mm was highly dependent on the water addition per kg of -1 mm in dry feed and suggested adding ~80 to 110 mL of water per kg of -1 mm in dry feed to attain the best possible permeability. Additionally, the research proposed a mechanism involving the melting of granules at high temperatures and highlighted the influence of -1 mm particles on bed permeability during the sintering process.

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

Adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits have well-documented alteration mineral zonation patterns with distinctive geochemical signatures. Proper use of whole-rock geochemistry can provide useful vectors for exploration and can enhance efforts to characterise and quantify the mineralogy and intensity of hydrothermal alteration.   Analyses of Au and Ag provide the most direct vectors to orebodies, and pathfinder elements such as As, Sb, Hg, Zn, Pb and Se are similarly zoned around at least some orebodies. However, the minerals that contain these elements occur almost exclusively in veins, and therefore identifying geochemical vectors related to wallrock alteration that is zoned outward from orebodies is crucial for effective exploration.   Distal alteration zones contain quartz-illite-chlorite-carbonate-pyrite, whereas samples proximal to veins contain quartz-adularia-pyrite, with lesser though variable illite-chlorite-carbonate. Therefore, adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits show K alteration in their cores. The resulting K-metasomatism can be evaluated in several ways. Areas that have been most intensely altered are commonly characterised by highest K contents, but these results can be complicated by variations in rock type across the prospective area. Potassium mass balance results provide a robust and rigorous assessment of K-metasomatism, however, knowledge about the composition of fresh rocks and correct identification of fresh precursor compositions of altered rocks are required. Three alteration indices provide effective evaluation of K-metasomatism: 1.   the K number, which is the ratio K/(2Ca+K+Na) (molar); 2.   Barrie values [(K2O * 100) / Sr]; and 3.   the Rb/Sr ratio. In most places these provide similar vectors, although K numbers can be complicated by the appearance of hydrothermal calcite and/or albite.   Plots of K/Al vs (2 Ca + K + Na)/Al (molar) allow estimation of the intensity of K-metasomatism and its mineralogical products, thereby complementing traditional XRD and petrographic studies of alteration minerals.

There is a growing interest in magnetite ores because of the increasing demand for this commodity. With these ores, there is significant cost associated with milling the ore to fine sizes using ball mills in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyclone classification efficiency tends to be poor due to the large difference in density between magnetite and gangue. This decreases the grinding circuit efficiency and results in over-grinding of magnetite. The objective of the work described in this paper was to modify the Bond locked cycle milling test procedure to quantify the loss of grinding circuit efficiency due to the mineral density effect. The locked cycle test procedure described here includes a stage of magnetic separation treating the closing screen undersize, which allows simulation of magnetite classification. The effect of classifier efficiency on low-density particles (non-magnetics) was simulated by altering the proportion of closing screen undersize bypass returning to the mill. Using a magnetic separator and a screen in the magnetics stream, different proportions of the magnetic fraction can be bypassed, thus allowing simulation of the effect of particle density on classification efficiency. This laboratory test work has confirmed that the impact of mineral density on cyclone efficiency subsequently has a crucial negative effect on ball mill circuit capacity. The results are in good agreement with reductions in capacity observed in practice. Multicomponent grinding and classification models were also developed in the LIMN software environment and were able to successfully simulate both the industrial and the laboratory ball mill circuit. The production scheduling of an open pit mine determines the optimal extraction sequencing that significantly impacts a mine’s life as well as net present value. The optimisation of production scheduling of large open pit mines with geological uncertainty is a computationally very intensive process. In this paper, an approximation algorithm is proposed to schedule an open pit mine, where instead of solving the whole problem at once, the production schedule is generated by sequentially solving subproblems. The subgradient method is used to generate the upper bound solution of the Lagrangian relaxed subproblem. If the upper bound relaxed algorithm is not a feasible solution, a mixed integer programming is solved on the generated upper-bound solution. An application at a copper mine with an orebody represented by 16 532 mining blocks is presented using the proposed algorithm. Results show that all constraints are satisfied. The net present values are also calculated and results reveal an 11 per cent higher net present value (NPV) is generated when compared to the NPV generated when the same approach is applied to the deterministic model of the deposit where uncertainty is not accounted for.CITATION:Chatterjee, S, 2014. "Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. A previous paper (1) indicated that electrowinning of copper at current densities considerably higher than those currently employed in electrowinning operations is technically feasible. It is of interest, therefore, to establish the extent of economic benefits which may be obtained from high current density operation and to determine the value of the optimum current density. Optimization of electrorefining processes has been discussed in considerable detail by Ibl (2) and Schmidt (3) whop from theoretical considerations, derived expressions for the optimum current density. In this work, general equations relating both the capital investment and the production cost for copper electrowinning plants to current density and plant capacity are established. From these equations, the optimum current density can be calculated for any desired plant capacity.

The optimum defluorinating conditions for Sichuan bastnasite crude ore were determined by orthogonal experiments. Over 95 per cent fluorine in the crude ore was stripped by roasting 30 minutes of the crude ore with Na2CO3/ore =0.25 at 650oC. The stripped fluorine crude ore was further treated by NH4 Cl to recover rare earth. Above 95 per cent rare earth can be leached by water after the stripped fluorine crude ore mixed NH4Cl(NH4Cl/ore =1:1) roasted 1 h at 325oC. At the same time, the rare earth leaching solution contains little Fe, Si and Al. Therefore it is propitious to further purify the solution and recover rare earth.

Destress blasting techniques have been widely employed in underground mines for the purpose of preconditioning highly stressed rock mass. Appropriate applications of the technique successfully contribute to increasing mine safety (eg mitigating the risks for rock bursts). This paper presents a simulation technique to estimate the extent of damage zones induced by destress blasting. A 3D numerical model with a single blasthole is constructed with FLAC3D code, whereby static analysis is carried out in which horizontal and vertical stresses are applied to the model in order to simulate stress conditions in a deep underground mine. Afterwards, dynamic analysis is performed whilst applying time-varying blast pressure along the blasthole. The blast pressure profile takes into consideration an instantaneous increase and gradual decrease in blast pressure as well as the propagation of detonation along the blasthole. In this paper, constitutive models allowing for shear and tensile strengths of rock mass that are dependent upon strain rate are newly implemented into FLAC3D code with C++ programming language, whereby blast-induced damage is assessed by the extent of tensile and shear failure zones. The results obtained from the dynamic analysis show significant decrease in the extent of yielding zones induced by destress blasting with increasing the magnitude of in situ stress. They indicate that considering in situ stress state is indispensable in order to propose proper blast design for each level in underground mines. Based on these results, the relationship between the extent of the damage zone and depth at which destress blasting is performed is established. Furthermore, stress dissipation induced by destress blasting is examined with static analyses, in which the modulus of elasticity is decreased according to a rock fragmentation factor, a, only for the area where tensile and shear failures takes place during the dynamic analyses. A model parametrical study with respect to a is undertaken. The relationship between the rock fragmentation factor and the stress dissipation in the yielding zones is developed from the parametrical study. Dry magnet separators are used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of minerals such as hematite and magnetite materials. In recent years advances in dry magnetic separators have improved their performance. Fine particle separation is one of the main areas which still remain weak. This paper will present a new design of fine particle drum separators which used for particle size less than 3 mm. A big problem in processing of iron ore is the grade and recovery of mineral values in the fines fraction. The new design high efficiency drum separator is developed to handle fine feeds. In this drum separators both of the drum shell and magnetic yoke rotate in opposite direction. the results showed that when the material feed size was = 1298 μm, drum shell speed was 42.5 rev/min, magnetic yoke speed was 100 rev/min and the maximum intensity of magnetic field was at = 30° the feed grade increased from 50.87 to 65.67 in concentrate box, increase to 60.45 in middle box and tail grade was 24.44. The total achieved recovery for both concentrate and middle box was 81.89 per cent.

With the emphasis on CO2 emission legislation and the increasing price of traditional fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, the use of alternative fuels is becoming more and more attractive for the industry, particularly for the cement industry. The variety of materials burnt in the kiln is enormous and varies from tyres, to animal meal and other waste material or by-products that would otherwise end up in an incinerator or landfill facility. This wide variety in materials demands thorough analysis to determine what elements are present in the organic matrix. The elements present may have an influence on the process or the quality of the cement. Toxic or environmental unfriendly elements may be incorporated or dissolved in the clinker phases; whereas volatile components may be present in stack emission to the atmosphere. X-ray analysis is already the key to elemental analysis in cement production, and is used here to determine the composition of these alternative fuels. The XRF spectrometer configuration used in this study is designed to overcome the difficulties associated with the analysis of strongly varying light organic matrices containing heavier elements in minor and trace-level quantities. Heavy element specific excitation conditions and three-dimensional polarised optical geometry increased the signal to background ratio and improved detection limits compared to conventional XRF spectrometers.

The process of excavating and mining coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata. The fractures provide pathways for gas released from coal seams and other gas-bearing strata to flow into the mine workings. Coal seam gas typically contains high concentrations of methane with lesser concentrations of carbon dioxide. Low concentrations of other gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide and ethane may also be present in some coal seams. In certain geological settings, particularly in close proximity to geological structures, such as faults and dykes, the concentration of gases contained in a coal seam can vary significantly between methane-rich to carbon dioxide-rich.In mine design and planning it is vital that mining engineers gather sufficient information to accurately determine the content and composition of the gas present in the coal seam and develop an understanding of changes in these parameters within the planned mining area.The longwall method of mining coal causes fracturing of the overlying and underlying strata behind the retreating longwall face. Where coal seams and other gas-bearing strata are present within the caving zone, gas will be released from the strata leading to contamination of the mine workings. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the mine ventilation, the concentration of gas in the mine may exceed the statutory limit, resulting in production delays and potentially unsafe conditions.CITATION:Black, D J, 2016. The Cleveland Mine has an annual ore production of 400,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.79 per cent tin and 0.30 per cent copper. It is achieved by an open stoping method, mechanised overhead sub-level benching. The operation is trackless with a ramp access from all working places to the surf- ace. Broken material is loaded from the stope and development headings into diesel trucks and hauled to the surface crushing plant.

Design of reshaped spoil surfaces is an important pan of rehabilitation of spoil piles resulting from open-cut coal mining. To achieve the optimum design, it is necessary to make accurate predictions of soil losses from spoil piles. Predictions can be based on data gathered using laboratory and field rainfall simulators and field plots. These data are used to derive input parameters for erosion prediction models. Model input parameters include rainfall erosivity, spoil erodibility, sediment size distribution, runoff, soil loss and peak runoff rate. Model outputs can be used in design and include predicted sediment size distribution and predicted soil loss.The traditional method of gathering input data is monitoring field plots. This method is very expensive, must be done on a long-term basis and is affected by irregular rainfall. Long-term field plots are necessary to obtain data that can be applied to empirical prediction models such as the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE).

Management of high rates of goaf gas emissions between 4000 and 6000 L/s of methane gas in longwall panels is a challenging issue, particularly in start-up areas of the panels. There is a need for investigation of the effect of various goaf gas drainage concepts and techniques, and development of effective gas drainage strategies for management of high goaf gas emissions in start-up areas of the longwall panels. This paper presents the results of various computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that were carried out to investigate the effect of different goaf gas drainage strategies and combinations for gas management in the start-up area of the longwall panels. Results indicated that the gas (methane) concentration in goaf holes on the tailgate (TG) side vary between 50 and 75 per cent under the simulated field conditions with flat coal seam gradients. The results also indicated that operation of more goaf holes for draining the goaf gas on the TG side results in high ingress of oxygen and further reduction in gas concentration in goaf gas drainage holes. The simulations also included scenarios with goaf gas drainage holes on the maingate (MG) side, TG cut-through seal and near the start-up area. The four-dimensional (4D) network relaxation method, originally developed by Akaike in 1999, uses Lagrange relaxation and is known for its ability to include the price change and possible better outputs, but the computation time is huge. However, the continuous advancement in computer technologies allows the use of higher-speed computers with more memory capacity. Therefore, in this paper the authors have tried to implement the method with adjustments and improvements in its algorithm to suit the current computing system. As a result, the computation time has been drastically reduced and more constraints can be included, which makes the scheduling a more realistic one. The case study of an open pit gold mine with 129 500 blocks can be solved considering the capacity constraints in 71 seconds. In previous case studies, the mined ore had to be processed or disposed of immediately. Now, stockpiling can be included as another option. Since the details of the algorithm are still being improved, the computation time is a little longer than the previous cases without the stockpiling option. However, it is found that scheduling with the stockpiling option is possible in a reasonable time. In conclusion, the 4D network relaxation method has become more useful with advances in computer technologies and provides better results.

The Fosterville goldfield, situated 25 km east of Bendigo, Victoria was at its peak between 1894-1910 with some 47 600 ounces produced (Figure 1). Since that time intermittent mining and tailings retreatment was undertaken until Bendigo Gold Associates delineated a viable resource and commenced an open cut heap leaching operation in early 1991. Unfortunately they encountered financial difficulties and Perseverance Exploration purchased the mine in April 1992. Perseverance operated a successful heap leach operation nearby Nagambie, 100 km east of Fosterville. Based on its acquired heap leaching experience, Perseverance Exploration was able to instigate operational changes to create a successful small gold heap leach operation. The major change was the using of the original multi-use leach pad as a single-use leach pad. The available data allows for a comparison of the two operating systems.

Ventilation is part of all underground mine operations and is undertaken in order to introduce fresh, cool air to the workings and to remove stale, affected air. It is problematic to obtain efficient and accurate estimates of volume flow and static pressure in the installed operational configuration for the auxiliary axial flow fans.An empirical method was developed to estimate the static pressure and volume flow through a calibrated differential pressure port on axial flow fans. Prior to shipping, each fan is performance tested according to BS 848 (ISO 5801) to establish the fan performance curves. In addition to the standard required parameters captured to fully describe the performance, the differential pressure is measured across the fan rotor to enable correlation with the characteristic fan curve.The method was implemented on a ruggedised tablet PC platform. This compact platform is then used to calculate the volume flow rate from the differential pressure sensor measurement input via a USB port. The result is a real-time measurement of volume flow and operating point of the fan system. This can be used effectively in overall modelling of the mine auxiliary ventilation systems and calculation of system resistance could provide a health indication of the fan and duct system.CITATION:Ratner, G and Viviers, S, 2013. "OZ MineralsÆ Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-east of Adelaide, 130 km north-east of BHP BillitonÆs Olympic Dam operation and 130 km south-east of the regional township of Coober Pedy, in the Gawler Craton region of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a 10 Mt/a ore throughput capacity, operating well over the design rate of 8 Mt/a. Increased throughput rates have seen a decreased water recovery from the tailing thickener due to operating above design. Subsequently, greater pressure was placed on the site water balance and bore field off-take rates due to increased evaporation losses from greater volumes of water reporting to the tailing storage facility. This resulted in a trade-off between water availability and milling rates as part of the operating strategy.Two projects were implemented to increase the tailing thickener underflow density, thus improving water recovery directly back into the operating plant, reducing water losses via evaporation and decreasing the reliance on the bore field system operating at maximum rates to maintain mill throughput. The two projects were: tailing thickener feedwell redesign implementation of the Manta Cube control system.This paper discusses the background, implementation and benefits attained from these two key projects. Combined they have allowed a two to three per cent increase in tailing thickener underflow density to be consistently achieved, which has allowed greater water recovery. As a result, the processing plant has been able to operate at higher throughput rates when required, with greater water availability in the process plant recirculating system and a reduction in occurrences of the plant being æslowed downÆ due to water supply shortfalls.
