The El Teniente mine produces more than 340 000 tonnes of fine copper per year from an industrial complex of underground mine, concentrator and smelter. Mass caving methods are employed to deliver approximately 95 000 tpd of ore to the mill, from a number of sectors underground, each sector being in effect a large-scale mine in its own right. This mining activity has faced challenges over the course of the last century such as:the capacity of the underground mine has been expanded to maintain and increase output of fine copper; the increasing size of the ore fragmentation forced to change the mining method to achieve the high productivity and profitability required in the business; and to modify the mining methods to continue mining at depth with safety. Fundamental activities in these mining methods, for the successful initiation of caving and subsequent draw, are:undercutting the base of the block or panel by blasting; and excavating of drawbells. The undercutting design evolves mainly on the height of the blasting to manage the change on ore fragmentation. The methodology move away from incorporating massive areas, typical of the block caving method, to a continuos blasting, typical of the panel caving method. Drawbell design changes on geometry, dimensions and sequence of excavation to deal with a corse ore fragmentation and the resolution of mining difficulties in the form of major rock bursts and collapses of production facilities. This paper focuses upon the evolution of the undercutting and drawbell design used at El Teniente mine and techniques under consideration to deal with future caving operations to provide the bulk of the daily production for the foreseeable future.

As cities become more populated and the need for tunnelling increases, we continue to dig deeper urban tunnels in more challenging ground conditions. At the same time our expectations for durability and long-term performance are increasing.It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that repairing water leaks in tunnels can be very costly and unplanned infiltration can cause undesirable outcomes for long-term maintenance costs, structural durability and environmental impacts. For this reason, tunnel constructors are investing more time and effort upfront into drainage and waterproofing systems.Tunnel membrane systems are becoming accepted as a necessary part of tunnel construction, however the knowledge surrounding selection of appropriate systems, design detailing and installation methods has not increased at the same rate. Currently Australia relies heavily on International Standards from Europe and the United States with no immediate program in place to establish our own locally relevant industry standards.This paper gives an overview of where the industry in Australasia is heading in terms of adopting relevant standards. Current basic waterproof detailing options for drained and undrained tunnels with success and failure of various methods are also addressed. Finally we look at the Brisbane Airport Link as a case study for how tunnel waterproofing contract methods, design and installation issues are being addressed in context with recent projects including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link in Sydney, Auckland Northern Gateway Tunnel, Eastlink Tunnel in Melbourne and Sydney City West Cable Tunnel.This paper’s primary objective is to propose guidelines for how tunnel waterproofing could be implemented on large infrastructure projects in the future and to map a path for preparing and introducing a ready to use document for selecting appropriate tunnel membrane and drainage systems whilst implementing detailing methods which are appropriate for local conditions.

An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

A recent review of resource reports lodged to statutory bodies found geological models with oversmoothed or unrealistic lithological boundaries, many of which do not represent geological appearance in the field, pit or underground drive. The underlying data is often too complex or messy to be incorporated into the resource model and is thus a simplification of reality, to the detriment of the mining operation and its shareholders. Volumes can be over- or underestimated and subsequent grade predictions can be misplaced, combining to cause over- or understatement in resource reporting to stakeholders and statutory authorities. Domain models can be improved with new modelling techniques such as machine learning. However, with poor data or improper use of machine learning techniques, the conclusions can be just as misleading as with current techniques. Machine learning rarely offers a single ‘right’ outcome, rather a range of possible outcomes from the data provided. But importantly it can take advantage of the full richness of data for more informed models. Machine learning also provides confidence in its predictions so that uncertainty in the resultant models can be quantified and passed through for risk assessment during mine planning and operation. This paper will discuss the factors accentuating complexity in deposit modelling: data diversity, structural controls, chemistry, data volumes, process workflows and external non-geological constraints. A case study illustrates the risk of reducing or ignoring complexity, which can result in an overly simplified geological model.

"Ventilation risks in an underground mine have essentially remained the same for centuries, yet theevidence suggests that there are many coal mines that have failed to adequately control these risks.The conduit for the knowledge learned by previous generations exists in the mining legislation. In an ideal world, mines would not need legislation to tell them what to do; they would resolve the risks to an acceptable level so as to protect the safety of persons in the mines based on the acquired knowledge. There will be some who have been personally aff ected by a mining disaster but for the majority they will be remembered as a vague recollection of an event from long ago. The mining legislation is the repository for the knowledge and outcomes from inquiries of past disasters. The challenge for the current generation, and the generations to come is to appreciate the legislation that exists, so as to not ælearn the hard wayÆ. In reviewing most disasters there is comment or discussion on the adequacy of the legislation, which ultimately results in some amendment to the law. For each person, there is an increasing responsibility to ensure that the same mistakes are not repeated. Understanding the legislation, its history and its purpose is the fi rst step in ensuring thatventilation risks are eff ectively managed. Failing to do this will be disastrous. This paper discussesthe relevance, importance and potential pitfalls of coal mine ventilation regulation."

The mining industry is facing economic pressures to treat more challenging and lower grade ore types, as well as pressure relating to environmental impact and social license to operate. Preconcentration through bulk ore sorting has the potential to benefit all these areas by enabling mining operations to divert material of low economic value prior to processing, thereby achieving higher feed grades and recovery, while reducing the processing plant and tailings dam footprint and capital required throughout the life of mine. The effectiveness of bulk ore sorting depends on the heterogeneity of material at the measurement location, as well as the accuracy and precision of the measurement. An understanding of ore heterogeneity can be assessed using drill core data, which provides metre by metre elemental assays. This paper reviews such data and assesses the grade distributions over different scales, which suggests that sufficient heterogeneity exists at mining scales to allow the potential for bulk ore sorting. Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within many industries, including mining. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980’s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials on a conveyor belt. Today, Pulsed Fast Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) technology is also applied in elemental analysis of bulk materials and has some advantages for bulk ore sorting. In order to enable effective bulk ore sorting, however, a PGNAA/PFTNA analyser must be designed to provide a representative bulk ore analysis with the necessary accuracy and precision. Examples are presented to provide an understanding of the factors affecting PGNAA/PFTNA performance in relation to effective bulk ore sorting.

One of the consequences of mining expansion in the Bowen Basin region of Central Queensland in Australia has been a substantial increase in demand for housing, with subsequent impacts on housing and rental markets. Those pressures are reduced to some extent by a proportion of the workforce choosing to live in other centres and commuting to workplace for block periods. The main factors influencing location choice are: housing availability and affordability, basic urban services and lifestyle of the town and the town physical attractiveness such as coastal town. Low costs housing provided by the mining company acts as an attracting factor for some miners to live in the mining town. Recommendations for three short-term and two long-term strategic policy guidelines to address housing situation and location issues are provided.

The Merlin Zone, a 2008 high-grade Mo-Re discovery, is a part of the Mount Dore Deposit in the Eastern Succession of the Mount Isa Inlier in Queensland, Australia. Hosted by carbonaceous metapelites and phyllites, the Merlin mineralisation comprises molybdenite veins, breccia infillings, stylolitic fracture fillings, and disseminations. Because rhenium is geochemically similar to molybdenum and commonly associated with it, global production of rhenium has been mostly a by-product of molybdenum refining. The high-grade rhenium in the Merlin Zone is an exciting discovery that is expected to become a direct source of rhenium. At the time of discovery, quality assurance (QA) procedures for rhenium were not in place at the Merlin Zone; therefore, they needed to be developed.The Merlin Zone was discovered using reverse circulation drilling, which led to concerns about molybdenite loss due to poor sample recovery. The twinning of the discovery hole with diamond core demonstrated a two-fold increase in molybdenum grade over several tens of metres. Consequently, the resources of the Merlin Zone were defined using assays from diamond drill core.Early analytical work, which was initially done only for molybdenum, comprised geochemical analysis with an aqua regia digestion, which have poor precision and can be biased low. Although initial testing for rhenium used similar procedures to those for molybdenum, a scarcity of commercial rhenium reference materials led to a validation process using neutron activation analyses and different digestions. This resulted in introduction of four-acid digestion assays, development of matrix-matched reference materials, and improvements to the quality of molybdenum and rhenium assays for reporting resources. Coarse and pulp duplicates were used to check for sampling bias and to ensure that levels of precision were adequate for the style of mineralisation and analytical methods. In addition, the direct and consistent geochemical correlation between molybdenum and rhenium provided another method for checking analyses.

The Mt. Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. The establishment of the world’s first Sub Level Shrinkage (SLS) mine from a tradition Sub Level Open Stoping operation has proven to be a geotechnical challenge which has required tailored solutions to overcome unique issues. This paper will be broken into two distinct sections that will outline: a brief overview of the mining method and how the SLS method was chosen; and how the SLS is managed and key geotechnical learnings. The story of the world’s first SLS originated from the need of a bulk mining method to ensure the viability of Mt. Wright into the future. Traditional bulk mining methods such as; Block or Sublevel Caving were originally ruled out due to the low natural ‘cavability’ of the orebody and the proximity of the orebody to existing major infrastructure (Decline, Ventilation Rises and Egresses). The first section of the paper will outline the key geotechnical information that helped decide the SLS method in addition to how continuous backfill influenced the design. The second section is intended to address issues that the geotechnical engineers encountered since the inception of the SLS. The feature topic of this section is mining induced stress. Like most bulk mining methods, Mt. Wright had success when the production front was running parallel to the stress (production front being ‘shadowed’ from the stress). This was until a design change, forced by a splitting ore body resulted in this shadowing effect becoming harder to achieve. As a result, rehabilitation and production hole re-drilling become a regular occurrence, which teamed with a strict set of access controls made the production cycle longer and harder to complete. In skewed distributions seen in many geochemical data sets, samples at the extreme ends of the distribution are often termed ‘outliers’. Samples considered as outliers can often make exploratory data analysis and resource estimation more difficult and less reliable. Such outlier samples may be legitimate because they are part of a natural high- or low-grade tail in the distribution. How these samples are identified and dealt with in resource estimation can often be a material issue for the Competent Person, particularly under the latest edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012). This paper discusses the identification and characterisation of outliers and high- and low-grade tails and proposes methods to deal with them in estimation.For dealing with outliers and high-grade tails ,very simple approaches, such as top-cutting through to more advanced geostatistical approaches, are discussed. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach are also outlined. Some examples of how the underlying geological understanding of a deposit influences the view of outliers and low-/high-grade tails is provided. The importance of documenting, communicating and challenging a given geological model is also discussed. This contribution presents the first results of an experimental research aimed at finding an unified description of the first stages of a rock comminution process. With reference to the case of the jaw crushers and to the specific subject of the comminution law, the tests reviewed and analysed in this contribution have been carried out, at a laboratory scale, on five different materials (limestones, quartzite, serpentinite) at different reduction ratios and feed rates, and accurately recording both total power and idle running power. The analysis of the results has shown that: ò the grain size distribution of the products complies with a modified form of the Rosin-Rammler equation, already found to be well suited to representing the grain size distribution of blasted rock in previous works by the authors; ò observed trends of the consumed power at increasing reduction ratios is steeper than predicted by the classical Rittinger, Kick and Bond laws, Rittinger law representing however a closer approximation of the experimental results; and ò a more accurate description of the experimental results is provided by a modified form of the Rittinger law. Accuracy of the semi-empirical expression has been found to be usually better than ten per cent by comparing actual results with expected Results.

The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). SASOL Synthetic Fuels has recently completed the design of sampling systems for raw and blended coal feeding the gasifiers at Secunda, South Africa. The new systems will replace manual, stopped belt sampling and have been designed to achieve specific accuracy targets on a daily basis. The sampling system is unusual in the coal industry in that the fines content (-5.5 mm nominal) of the coal is very critical and is to be determined with high accuracy.The sampling system was designed to meet carefully considered target accuracies using methods of modern sampling theory. The heterogeneity of the coal streams involved with respect to the critical analytes was determined by appropriate sampling and sample analysis. The statistical characterisation of the time variation of analytes in the process streams was based on variograms derived from on-line ash gauges. From this point, the design was completed using fundamental statistical sampling theory and some simulation studies. The paper discusses the development of the sampling system design in detail as well as the plans to use the data stream to provide timely alarms when the coal quality deviates from the target specification.

When dealing with rocks in the geotechnical profession, a common activity involves providing an estimate of the intact strength. The tactile approach and descriptions of strength that apply to soils is well documented, can be readily checked through the use of a pocket penetrometer and are known to provide reliable estimates of strength. Moreover, although different soil strength classification systems are present, the bounds between classification classes are compatible across almost all documented classification systems. However, this is not the case for rock strength materials. There are numerous systems within the literature, some with different concepts, and almost all have different bounds to each strength classification. In this paper, the author presents seven classification systems for estimating intact rock strength and highlights issues in their implementation. During the 1998/99 Asian crisis Solid Energy's export revenues collapsed from over US$70M to under US$40M. Simultaneously, domestic market uncertainty led to decreases in volumes and prices. A major new underground mine was not technically viable, and was closed, and several other mines were marginal. Less than two years later, Solid Energy and its JV partner closed a second new underground mine. The company was in financial crisis, and reported an $86M loss for 1998/99. After refinancing with stringent workout conditions it still had minimal returns due to low prices, unaffordable transportation costs and huge unrealised FX losses as the NZ dollar fell 40 per cent in value. The obvious scenario was to æcash upÆ û complete extraction at remaining mines, sell off any viable parts of the business, pay off debt and wind the company down.In 2002 Solid Energy has completed its recovery. Although margins remain slim and volatile in both export and domestic markets, it is achieving record volumes and revenues. It has paid off its shareholder loan, has minimal remaining FX losses, and cashflow is allowing further mine and infrastructure development. The key to the turnaround has been implementation of rigorous planning, analysis and decision-making in all aspects of the business. The company has a comprehensive, rolling 20-year plan used annually to update rolling five year and annual business plans. Solid Energy augments strong line management operations with rigorous standards and processes for mine planning and development, operational decision-making, and functional support. Detailed, quantitative risk analysis is used in all aspects of the business and allows comprehensive integration of opportunity and risk management across all activities in the company.Coal mining is widely perceived as an æold-economyÆ industry. But, like other successful æold economyÆ companies, the information systems and management processes used by Solid Energy are as leading edge as any in the high-tech sector. They are the key to managing to add and sustain maximum value for a company that has access to coal resources sufficient for hundreds of years.

In the spectrum of mining-related disciplines, geometallurgy sits between resource geology and metallurgical engineering. Unlike its neighbours, it is a relatively young discipline and its concepts, procedures and techniques are still evolving. Relevant geometallurgical issues differ from one deposit to the next so there is no single template that can be used in all situations, meaning that geometallurgy programs are nearly always customised and tailored to the deposit and the situation.Over time, a number of key mistakes are seen to emerge regularly. The eventual impact of these mistakes can vary from suboptimal performance of mine and plant to complete failure of the operation. For instance, poor characterisation of ore lithologies and their spatial distribution can have negative impacts on processing plant throughput. However, when combined with failure to identify critical blending constraints it can result in a totally inoperable plant.A number of common mistakes committed during geometallurgical programs are discussed and some preferred alternative approaches are suggested

Ore textures in base metal deposits are an important factor in the liberation of the economic components of the ore, metal recovery and reagent consumption during beneficiation. Optimising the mine profit requires knowing the relationship between ore texture and mineral processing behaviour, and the ability to predict the metal grade and the ore texture at a suitable scale. A new method that generates distributions of mesotextures for any mining block size or shape is proposed and includes: I . establishing a protocol for acquiring mesotexture data: 2. measuring the mesotexture spatial correlations using a multi-texture variogram; 3. generating multiple simulations of mesotextures; and 4. upscaling the simulations to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. Models of the ore textures built using the proposed methodology can be used to assess resources and reserves, enhance ore/waste discrimination and predict the metallurgical behaviour of parcels of ore.

The post pillar cut and fill stoping method has been adopted by King Island Scheelite for the extraction of the main Dolphin orebody. The orebody is a massive, tabular deposit varying from 10 to 50 metres in thickness, and dipping at approximately 30¦ towards and under the sea bed. The mining method was selected for 1. maintenance of hangingwall support under the sea bed; 2. maximisation of first stage ore extraction; 3. flexibility of mining, allowing maintenance of grade and selective mining around waste bands within the orebody, and 4. compatibility of existing equipment both with stoping and the on-going underground mine development programme. Stope parameters were established on the basis of initial rock stress analyses, and since the undercut phase of mining the stoping programme has been monitored with various types of deformation measuring devices installed in a series of large diameter boreholes.

A simple algebraic method of aligning large scale underground excavations such as a crusher station or workshop or indeed any large cavern or mine layout to the optimal stress condition is outlined. The method uses the stress transformation law to determine how the component stresses vary as the stress tensor is rotated around its axis. The aim is to define the orientations at which the maximum and minimum horizontal stresses occur such that the excavation can be aligned with its long axis paralleling the trend of the maximum horizontal stress leading to the minimum potential for overstressing of the side walls. The physical environment in which the stress field is acting is unchanged. At the design location, the trend and plunge of the major principal stress is unchanged. However, the coordinate system by which the location of the stress field is described is arbitrary and the stress transformation law allows that coordinate system to be rotated to a more convenient orientation and for the component stresses to be calculated within the alterative coordinate system. The stress field is typically described in terms of normal and shear stresses aligned to a north–south, east–west, vertical, coordinate system. In this scenario, there are two orientations in the 360° horizontal plane defined by the coordinate system where the horizontal normal stresses are equal, and at 45° to those orientations, two orientations where they diverge to the maximum extent. Those orientations of maximum divergence correspond to the trend of the maximum and minimum horizontal stresses, usually designated σH and σh, and that is what the algebraic manipulation seeks to determine. This technique is a first pass assessment which relies on a knowledge of the full stress tensor. It is not a replacement for numerical modelling or detailed design, but a tool to guide planning.

The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.
