This will not onlyimprove performance but with safety issues becoming more and more prevalent, the need for the introduction of mechanisation technologies to mining applications is essential. Ongoing developments are occurring in almost every field, ranging from basic developments to specialised mining. Mechanical tunnelling and shaft sinking have set the standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to suit the geological and hydrological requirements of tunnelling projects worldwide. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant optimisation of tunnelling performance.

As a result of high fuel prices and substantial haul distances or vertical lift from pits, the development of large inpit crushing and conveying systems at many open pit operations has occurred over the last decade.The basic criteria that has to be met is that the material is reduced in size to be conveyable. The Toguraci low sulfidation epithermal gold vein deposits are located 2 km WSW from the Gosowong mine and form part of the Gosowong Goldfield. The goldfield lies within a Neogene magmatic arc on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, East Indonesia. The terrain is moderate to steep, rainforested, and poorly outcropping. Exploration and mining operations are being carried out within the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals Contract of Work (exploration tenement) jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (82.5 per cent, operator) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (17.5 per cent). First pass exploration of the Gosowong area began late 1992 resulting in the discovery of weakly developed porphyry copper mineralisation (named Bora) at Toguraci in 1993. Early in the evaluation of this porphyry an overprinting epithermal Au/Ag mineralisation event was recognised, however exploration focus remained on the Bora porphyry deposit for some time. The discovery of the nearby Gosowong epithermal gold deposit and the exploration of other prospects in the area further diverted attention and funds from Toguraci. It was not until year 2000 that Toguraci was seriously reevaluated as part of a detailed appraisal of the epithermal gold potential within a 5 km radius of the Gosowong gold mine. A fly-camp based drilling campaign using man-portable rigs was undertaken between August 2000 and March 2002. All exploration at Toguraci was then stopped pending government approvals to mine. These were finally issued in May 2003 and immediately drilling restarted and pre-mine approvals (eg the environmental impact study) were sought and granted. The first Toguraci gold bar was poured in February 2004. Exploration at Toguraci and elsewhere in the Gosowong Goldfield continues today.

From time to time failures occur in structures made of lead, and the failure may be due to corrosion involving a definite thinning of the lead sheet, or it may be of such a nature that cracks develop and the lead appears to disintegrate. The idea of lead cracking will at once suggest something abnormal, for common experience shows that this metal is very ductile and will withstand considerable bending without showing any sign of fracture. Cracking, on the other hand, is usually associated with brittleness.Fig. 1 is a natural-size photograph of a cracked sheet of lead. Prior to photographing, the sheet was etched byimmersion in a solution of ammonium molybdate. Several characteristics of this crack will be evident. First of all it is distinctly a zigzag crack, and secondly it passes between, rather than through, certain well-defined areas which appear bright in the photograph. This is particularly noticeable at the lower end where the crack appears to terminate.

In an earlier LCA study, the authors showed that the electricity consumption of the electric furnaces used in the production of the ferronickel and ferrochrome feedstocks made significant contributions towards the Gross Energy Requirement (GER) of stainless steel production, on a æcradle-to-gateÆ basis. Given the relatively low efficiencies associated with electrical power generation, substantial reductions in the GER for stainless steel production could be anticipated if more direct use of thermal energy was made in the ferronickel and ferrochromium smelting stages.In view of these findings, a follow-up study was undertaken to investigate the likely environmental benefits of using bath smelting processes for the production of ferronickel and ferrochromium compared to the traditional rotary kiln-electric furnace processes, but still utilising the electric furnace process for stainless steel production. The METSIM process simulation software package was used to set up models of the two bath smelting processes and provide process energy requirements that were incorporated into the LCA. The environmental impacts considered in the LCA were greenhouse (Global Warming Potential, GWP) and acid rain gas (Acidification Potential, AP) emissions and solid waste emissions.The results of the study showed that the bath smelting route reduced the GER for ferronickel production by about 37 per cent over the traditional route, which translated to about a 21 per cent reduction in the GER for stainless steel. The corresponding reduction for ferrochromium was about half that for ferronickel, and when combined with the ferronickel result gave a 25 per cent reduction in the GER for stainless steel production. Similar reductions were also observed for the GWP and to a lesser extent the AP for both feedstocks, as all primary energy inputs were essentially fossil fuel based. Substantial reductions in solid waste emissions were also indicated for the direct use of ores in smelting. By utilising bath smelting processes for the production of the ferronickel and ferrochromium feedstocks, stainless steelÆs suitability for meeting many of the goals necessary for sustainable development, already recognised because of its particular properties, would be even further enhanced.

The Western Desert of Egypt is a part of the arid Great Sahara of Africa which extends from the Nile Valley in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is covered by a sedimentary sequence of Mezozoic and Teriary rocks. Recently this part of the country (about 65% of its surface area) has attracted an increasing attention in the plan of finding new agricultural and industrial communities outside the crowded Nile Valley. The plan aims to reduce the high population density in the narrow Nile Valley and to cover a considerable part of the increasing food demands in the country of Egypt. Accordingly, the groundwater exploration work in the Western Desert has been remarkably increased in the last decade, however it is still limited compared with the vast area of the Desert. The present work is a part of the groundwater exploration in the 6th October City, a new community located at 40kms west of Cairo. The rock exposures belong to a sedimentary stratigraphic section starting from the Cretaceous in the east to the Pliocene in the west. The Cretaceous outcrops due east are attributed to an almost N-S uplift and forms a thick massive limestone plateau which separates the present area from the Nile Valley. The Teriary section in the west have alternations of different porous formations such as the sands and sandstones which may acquire a good potentiality of groundwater resources. The previous groundwater exploration work included combined geological and geophysical investigations followed by exploration drilling. Although the area lies directly to the west of the Nile Valley, the discovered groundwater is saline and located at deeper reserviores compared with the groundwater in the Nile Valley. This groundwater was described as marine fossile water by the oil companies working in the Western Desert. From the geological point of view, it is believed that the Cretacious massive limestone plateau, in the east, roots to a depth which far exceeds the groundwater levels in the Nile Valley and acts as an impervious barrier between the aquifers in the Nile Valley and the area under investigations.

Currently, mine plans are optimised by using several criteria as objective functions, like profit, life-of-mine, concentration of some pollutants, mining costs, confidence level or ore resources, with consideration of constraints related to production rates, plant capacities and grades. Whilst this approach is successful in terms of producing high value production schedules, it uses a static opening sequence of the drawpoints and therefore the optimisation is made within the level of freedom left by the original opening schedule, and as a result it is far from the true optimal value of the project. This paper presents a model to optimise the sequence of drawpoint opening over a given time horizon. The emphasis is in the precedence constraints that are required to produce meaningful operational sequences considering the exploitation method (panel or block caving), physics considerations and logical rules. Further on, while it applies the standard approach of maximising net present value (NPV), it considers other targets for optimisation, like the robustness and constructability of the plans. Finally, it applies the model to real data to obtain feasible plans by means of this model. The first tests were done varying the production capacity of the mine.

This station supplies the whole of the power to North Broken Hill Ltd and Broken Hill South Ltd. It also supplies, power to the Southern Power Corporation for distribution to the Zinc Corporation Ltd. The Southern Power Corporation has a generating station which is tied in with the central generating authority.

Knowledge of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites is very important for the development of the concept of biomineralisation and the creation of a scientific base for new biocompatible materials for medical purposes. The present work is devoted to research results on various synthetic and biological carbonate apatites obtained at Saint Petersburg University over many years. All-important problems will be considered such as the location of CO32- ions in the apatite structure, the ionic substitutions in various biological apatites and the development of synthesis methods for their analogues. Syntheses of apatites were realised by precipitation methods and under hydrothermal conditions (from solid compounds and by calcite treatment). Biological samples used in this study were physiogenic and pathogenic apatites formed in the human organism, eg in teeth and in renal and salivary stones and dental calculi as well as apatites from fossils of different taxonomic families (brachiopods, conodonts, fishes, reptiles, mammal) with different geological ages and burial conditions. The study of the crystal chemistry of carbonate apatites has been carried out by powder (including high-temperature measurements) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, IR-spectroscopy, thermal analysis and various chemical analytical techniques.

A general review of grinding mill steel liner evolutions/developments in recent times. The driving force behind these developments has been the mill operators desire to minimise the nett cost of their operation. These developments have resulted from a team approach between supplier, operators and reline crews. The move towards larger diameter high aspect mills, faster mill speeds, pebble ports and the use of large diameter grinding media has affected the traditional liner designs, which is placing higher demands on the supplier to meet these new working parameters and expectations. Operators are also taking closer ownership in the liners being supplied, as demonstrated by the development of their own mill liner specifications. Collectors are used to impart hydrophobicity on particles thus increasing their chances of reporting to the froth phase. Also, the extent to which naturally hydrophobic gangue particles, such as talcaceous minerals, report to the froth can be reduced by the use of depressants. Thus the use of collectors and depressants will directly influence the extent to which hydrophobic particles report to the froth. However these hydrophobic particles will also have a direct effect on the characteristics of the froth phase, more strongly hydrophobic particles causing a reduction in the stability of the froth with the expected concomitant effects on grade and recovery. This study included microflotation (ie frothless flotation) and batch flotation of various ores using a number of different collectors and depressants and a newly developed froth imaging device (SmartfrothTM). Flotation performance was characterised by mass and water recovery, and recoveries and grades of the valuables. This paper shows how the various reagents influenced the behaviour of the pulp and froth phases. The critical importance of managing the type and dosage of reagents used in flotation with a view to optimising their influence on the froth phase is discussed.

Clinoptilolites, modified with sodium, produced a material which has been tested for the ability to remove Hg (II) from aqueous nitric acid. The amount of adsorption depends on contact time, acid concentration of aqueous solution and initial mercury concentration. The study of the kinetics of mercury uptake revealed that all sorbents exhibit a fast rate of sorption. The highest sorption capacities were observed for sodium forms, and were up to five times higher than for the unmodified zeolite. The maximum sorption capacity toward mercury is determined as 0.093 ¦g/g at an initial concentration of 10.0 ¦g/L for a clinoptilolite from Tsagaantsav deposit (Mongolia). The sorption of Hg (II) has an ion-exchange nature and consists of three stages, ie the adsorption on the surface of microcrystals, the inversion stage and the ion exchange in the interior of the microcrystal. Sorption capacity decreases with the increase of mercury concentration. The presence of other metal ions such as Cd (II), Cu (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) increases Hg (II) uptake capacity. Finally, sorption for Hg (II) was investigated in batch systems to evaluate the short-term stability of the sorption properties.

Ore recovered by North Broken Hill Limited as a result of mining operations at its Broken Hill leases is obtained, at the present scale of working, in the proportions of 80% from the North mine and 20% from the British mine sections, and is composed mainly of a silver bearing, sulphide lead and zinc mineral, in association with the gangue materials mentioned later in the text.The lead-zinc sulphide lode at the North mine is deposited in folds in pre-Cambrian sedimentary schists. These folds pitch north-east at approximately 40° and dip north-west at approximately 60°. In plan the deposit appears as two lenses designated on the mine as the "Southern" and "Northern" ore-bodies.The Southern ore-body yields the main tonnage of crude ore. The sulphide mass here overlies a heavy layer of rhodonite which persists with the pitch of the lode. In the central section of this ore-body the sulphide zone is coarse grained and of high grade with a wide range of minerals in the gangue dilution. Quartz, garnet, ftuorite, rhodonite, and felspar are common, whilst chalcopyrites, pyrites, pyrrhotite and green felspar are often present. The Northern ore-body is dolomitic to siliceous in nature. The complexity in treating environmentally harmful impurities such as As, Sb, Bi from the base metal matte or metal in the smelting stage are responsible for the high cost of the refining process. The impurity capacities (such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth) of slags were calculated a priori using Reddy-Blander (RB) model. The capacity predictions were for a wide range of matte and slag compositions in copper smelting conditions. The calculated impurities capacities and impurity distribution ratios results are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial slags data. The a priori knowledge of impurities is useful for reduction of energy consumption and enhanced environmental control in the current and future non-ferrous metal processes.

Increasing bed depth is one of the main options sinter plants consider to increase production, since it is an incremental improvement and less expensive compared with a new plant. To maximise the benefits of increased bed depth, correct blend design and plant operation is critical. This paper discusses test work conducted to show the effects of ore type and bed depth on sintering performance and the adjustments required in both fuel rate and lime addition depending on ore type. The differences in sinter plug macro and microstructure were also examined to show the effect of bed depth on ore assimilation and matrix formation. Finally, the benefits of blending ores to achieve the best sintering performance as bed depth increases is discussed.

The Prominent Hill copper-gold deposit is located approximately 150 km north west of Olympic Dam, on the southern margin of the Mount Woods Inlier in South Australia. Its discovery in November 2001 resulted from the application of a geological model developed from geological, geophysical and petrophysical data pertaining to the Olympic Dam deposit. The discovery has dispelled the notion the Olympic Dam may be unique, and that another deposit like it is unlikely to be found. The Prominent Hill mineralisation is hosted by haematite-matrix hydrothermal breccias, which have suffered extensive iron-sericite-silica alteration and overprinting. Copper, gold, barium, fluorine, uranium, cerium and lanthanum are all intrinsically associated with the hydrothermal iron. Breccias intrude an east-west striking, fault-controlled sedimentary succession, which is flanked to both the south and north by volcanic complexes. Many similarities between Prominent Hill and Olympic Dam are documented including geological setting, mineralogy, breccia styles, and alteration. Differences relate largely to the nature of the immediate host rocks. The similarities and difference provide key data for improving exploration models for this style of iron oxide copper-gold deposit, both within the Gawler Craton as well as globally.

The mobility of radionuclides released into aquatic, terrestrial and subsurface environments by mining, industrial processes is an area that deserves significant scientific attention. The presence of microorganisms in these environments can influence the transport of radionuclides. Free-living microorganisms constitute mobile suspended particles that may have a radionuclide sorbing capacity higher than that of the environment. Radionuclide transport will then proceed faster with than without microorganisms. In contrast, if the majority of the microorganisms are growing in biofilms on surfaces, transport of radionuclides may be reduced. Microorganisms can directly sorb radionuclides either within the cell structure or on the cell wall. Radionuclides could also be sorbed by minerals precipitated by microorganisms. Microorganisms produce complexing agents that can influence radionuclide mobility. The involvement of microorganisms in biogeochemical processes is related to their ability to include various chemical elements and their combinations into biochemical redox reactions. Microorganisms can alter the extent of radionuclide oxidation that results in their deposition as a result of the formation of insoluble forms. Some studies have shown the bioremediative potential of stimulating reducing bacteria to use some of the soluble radionuclides as electron acceptors and thus precipitate them out of solution. The microbial involvement in providing a barrier for radioactive element migration (uranium, technetium) and the formation of ores (eg uranium) has been justified. The mediated impact of microbial activity on radionuclide migration occurs through its effect on the ambient geochemistry by geochemical speciation changes, pH changes and changes to the ambient redox potential. As the mobility of many radionuclides depends on the pH and redox potential of the environment, these microbially mediated geochemical changes can influence radionuclide migration through changes to both the dominant radionuclide species and mineral phases.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

Lump ore is one of the key ferrous feeds used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, normally accounting for ten to 20 per cent of the blast furnace burden. Like other feeds, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on the stable operation and productivity of the blast furnace. Lump ore is usually assessed chemically, physically and mineralogically to establish its likely blast furnace performance. The physical characteristics of lump ore are strongly related to the chemistry, mineralogy and texture of the ore involved. In this paper, the blast furnace ironmaking process is reviewed, with particular emphasis on the key quality requirements for the ferrous burden material. A variety of key physical characteristics of lump ore measured using standard and non-standard methods are then described and subsequently correlated with the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ore wherever possible. Finally, the impact of these physical characteristics on blast furnace operation is assessed.
