In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 kilometres. Some 500 kilometres south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 kilometres. The Complex was emplaced at several centers along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite.

"An accurate prediction of benefit for some types of ore may require not just the ore grade, but a whole compositional characterisation of the estimates; that is, its full mineral composition including waste composition and nuisance elements. An example is Nickel laterite ores, where Ni/Co content must be complemented by estimates of many other elements, as these might have a notable impact on ore processing.Estimates are often obtained with (co-)kriging or co-simulation; however, geostatistics applied to compositional data may yield spurious and inconsistent results because of the constant sum constraint. The log-ratio approach avoids such problems. It proposes a three-step procedure: data are mapped to a set of log ratios of components; for example, the additive log-ratio transformation (alr) transformed scores are modelled with an appropriate fully multivariate geostatistical toolbox; for example, direct/cross-semivariograms and co-kriging or co-simulation results are back-transformed to the original units.Some practical aspects may make the application of this technique difficult: the assumption of Gaussianity and the high dimensionality of the compositions combined with the need for using multivariate methods. This contribution compares several ways of treating compositional data (combining normal score transformation, log-ratio transformations, and minimum/maximum autocorrelation factor (MAF) decomposition) with respect to their ability to generate sensible simulations. The various approaches considered are illustrated with a Nickel laterite data set for which ten variables are available. Both theoretical considerations and illustration results suggest that the best combination is (log)ratio-normal score transform-MAF, in this order. The factors so obtained are closer to Gaussian, approximately spatially decorrelated and can be simulated independently. Simulations can later be recombined to alr-simulations, which in turn may be converted back to point compositions. The resulting simulated compositions are compared with a full Gaussian co-simulation of the raw data. The log-ratio methods show reasonable to good reproduction of mean values, and distribution of the data set and by construction satisfy the total sum constraint, in contrast to the simulations based on raw data for which the total sums fluctuate strongly.CITATION:Mueller, U, Tolosana-Delgado, R and van den Boogaart, K G, 2014. Sampling and analysis of mineral deposits need to be executed without fear or favour of financial or personal impacts. Examples are given to illustrate the effects of departures, witting and unwitting, from correct use of appropriate techniques and/or equipment with emphasis on exploration and mining of porphyry copper deposits of the Pacific Rim. Some of the results of errors on the low and high sides of true value in exploration, resource or reserve estimations and in production caused by sampling and/or sample preparation mistakes, faulty practices, equipment and/or analysis are considered.

Traditionally, operators on mineral flotation plants have relied on visual inspection of the froth surface when making adjustments to process set-points. Machine vision systems are being developed to relate froth surface descriptors, which can be consistently measured in real time, to flotation performance. By investigating the impact of various selected operating variables on both froth surface characteristics and metallurgical performance it is possible to develop a management strategy for the control and optimisation of the process. This paper presents the results of testwork conducted at Kennecott copper mine which investigates the relationship between the froth colour and the concentrate grade and discusses the factors which affect the froth colour. This work shows that the main factors that influence the froth colour in this system are molybdenum, copper and iron concentrate grade, pulp and concentrate per cent solids and pulp iron grade.It goes on to develop models to predict the concentrate grade based on colour information and velocity and stability information. It also shows that the most accurate prediction is made with combined colour and stability information.

The extraction and transport of coal from underground coal mines can result in significant liberation of coal and/or silica dust into the mine atmosphere. Mine operators have long used ventilating air as a primary means of diluting generated dust, removing dust from the working faces and preventing dust from reaching the minersÆ working environment. As production levels have increased, mine operators continue to be challenged in maintaining dust concentrations below compliance levels. The need for maximising the effectiveness of available ventilating air in conjunction with other effective controls, such as water sprays and dust collectors, continues to be critical to the long-term health of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale laboratory and mine-site research to evaluate improved application of dust controls for both longwall and continuous mining methods. A summary of recent research results and recommended practices will be provided.

The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. Underground mining operations on Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile were suspended in 1976, suffering the combined effects of low gold prices and grades. A subsequent substantial increase in the gold price led to the decision by Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to reopen their mines in 1979. The two shafts selected for access required excessive maintenance. The geological assessment and development parameters prescribed have been successfully used to establish reserves to maintain production at a 390 000 tonnes per annum rate. While ore reserve grade is being maintained from primary stoping sources, supplementary lower grade ore is drawn from remnant pillars and stopes at lower cost.Performance by the workforce has reached levels previously attained and a record tonnage was hoisted in the fourth year after recommencement.Keywords : Golden Mile lodes, geological research, payruns, cut and fill, mill holes, gold price, ore grade, amalgamation.

Remapping of the Burdekin Basin has resulted in the subdivision of the three formations (megafacies) previously recognised in the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. Nine dominantly volcaniclastic facies are now identified within the three megafacies, representing coastal plain, floodplain lake, alluvial plain, ephemeral lake and alluvial fan depositional environments. The Dotswood Group was deposited during a major regressive phase that began at the end of the Givetian, continued throughout the Frasnian and ended in the early Famennian.The proposed depositional model completes a southeasterly progradation of coastal plain facies over shoreline and nearshore marine facies established in the underlying Fanning River Group. Uplift and associated acid-intermediate volcanism to the south of the Burdekin Basin, resulted in the deposition of a volcanogenic alluvial fan facies locally preserved along the southwestern margin of the basin. Tuffs and ?ignimbrite were deposited in widespread floodplain lakes which lay behind the coastal plain. An alluvial plain traversed by southward flowing rivers, formed the northern margin of the basin.

Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.

In recent years rapid advances have been made in the technology used for hydrology and erosion modelling of rural catchments. These advances have been driven by the growing availability of digital terrain maps that can be used to automatically define catchment properties that previously had to be manually extracted from contour maps. In addition, these models have, in principle at least, more powerful predictive capability. The author is involved in a number of projects to migrate and further develop these models for application to mine rehabilitation assessment. Current technologies for hydrology and erosion assessment (eg CREAMS, ANSWERS) are reviewed, underlying principles highlighted and deficiencies in the context of mine rehabilitation design assessment addressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new digital terrain map tools (eg WEPP, SIBERIA) are discussed. Current work integrating these new models with existing rehabilitation design tools (eg ACIRL's ARGUS computer package) highlights the advantages of an integrated approach using digital terrain maps; cheaper, faster, lower impact and more flexible rehabilitation design. The use of novel visualisation tools to aid the design process is discussed. The paper is illustrated by applications to mine sites in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The CSIRU Division of Mineral Engineering is developing various techniques for the on-line determination of moisture in coal and coke, and some instruments are now commercially available. These techniques permit accurate and rapid determination of moisture in materials directly on conveyor belts or in bins. The most promising techniques for direct on-belt measurement of moisture in coal are capacitance and microwave transmission. A non-contacting under-belt capacitance and gamma-ray backscatter technique has determined moisture in coal to better than 0.5 wt'/. in field tests at BHP Stockton Borehole Colliery, NSW. Mineral Control Instrumentation Pty Ltd have been licensed to manufacture the capacitance gauges and have installed five commercial units in the coal industry and other industries. Microwave transmission techniques have an advantage over the under-belt capacitance technique in that they are not sensitive to vertical segregation of moisture in coal on the conveyor belt. A laboratory prototype of a microwave transmission gauge has been constructed and tested. Microwave techniques, based on a measurement of attenuation and phase shift, are under development and are expected to be field tested in 1987. These new techniques will enable a wide range of thickness changes to be accommodated. Capacitance and microwave transmission methods are unsuitable for materials of high electrical conductivity, such as coke. CSIRO is therefore developing a fast neutron and gamma-ray transmission technique, which is proving very accurate in laboratory tests. This technique overcomes many of the limitations of thermal neutron moisture gauges and it is expected to be field tested in 1987.

The zinc industry is dominated by the electrolytic zinc (EZ) process. The EZ process has a low tolerance for impurities, resulting in tight concentrate specifications. Many mining companies sacrifice zinc recovery in order to meet smelter specifications. Some have ore-bodies that cannot be economically developed because too much metal has to be sacrificed, or it is just not possible to meet the specification. The BUKA Zinc Process (BZP) has been developed as a method of producing high-quality zinc from a wide range of concentrates. It can have lower capital and operating costs than the conventional zinc and lead production routes. Advantages accrue from increases in metal recovery during concentrating, smelting and refining; the elimination of most of the capital and operating costs associated with lead smelting; reduced transport costs; lower zinc refining costs; reduced refinery residue disposal costs; and reduced future environmental liabilities. This paper describes results of testwork that has been undertaken to demonstrate the viability of the BZP on both test rig and laboratory-bench scale.

Compositional geostatistics is an approach developed to ensure that the constant sum constraint induced by geochemical iron ore analysis is respected in estimation and simulation. Jack-knifing and cross-validation were used within this framework to compare the results from ordinary cokriging of the additive log ratio (alr) variables with those from conventional ordinary cokriging. Two methods were used to back-transform the alr estimates: the crude additive generalised logistic back transformation and numerical integration via Gauss-Hermite quadrature. Previous work on a blasthole data set from a Yilgarn iron ore mine showed promising results, with the Gauss-Hermite quadrature method returning results comparable to ordinary cokriging from the point of view of bias, but superior in that the constant sum constraint imposed by geochemistry of the data was honoured. Other practitioners have noted that the linear interpolation of non-linear log ratio transformations will result in biased results, and that this bias can be masked in a (grade control) setting where the spatial density is high. To test this assertion, the methodology has been extended to successively lower spatial density data sets. A number of gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour, nitrous oxide, ozone and chlorofluorocarbons are transparent to incoming short-wave radiation, but are relatively opaque to outgoing longwave radiation. Variations in the concentration of these gases in the troposphere can alter the thermal balance of the earth's atmosphere. Outgoing terrestrial radiation which would otherwise escape to space, is trapped within the inner layer of the atmosphere, resulting in a greenhouse effect. It is estimated that at present greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, contribute about 50% to the greenhouse effect. However, in the future, the contribution made to the greenhouse effect by gases other than C02 will become increasingly more significant. Greenhouse gases arise from a wide range of sources and their escalating increease is largely related to an increase in the world's population, an increase in the standard of living of many areas and changes in lifestyle. The effect of increasing man-made greenhouse gases in the troposphere is unknown but it is proposed that it may increase temperature and may modify climate, agricultural response and land use. The sources of greenhouse gases are identified and found to comprise a wide range of activities. The contribution that coals use makes to the greenhouse effect is examined in detail. It is concluded that coals total contribution is small being about 10% of man made greenhouse gases. Envisaged expansion of coal's use will only cause a small increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst developing technology for coal's use for power generation has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from new plants by approximately 25%.

A block model of the orebody is used to plan a mine. The first requirement is to identify ore to be extracted, discarding waste, so as to meet target grade, generally in multiple analytes. Commonly, cut-off values are set for each analyte, so as to distinguish ore from waste. It will be shown that, if more than one analyte is important, this procedure is wasteful of ore and a composite cut-off function is preferable.A second requirement is to sequence the ore extraction so that the variability in ore grade is controlled: failure to do so will result either in low-quality ore being marketed, or excessive re-handling being required to blend the ore to reduce the grade variability.A third requirement is that the extraction sequence should be such as to control the amount of equipment movement required, enhancing the equipment productivity.The overall objective, to optimise the Net Present Value (NPV) of the mined ore, is simply stated but complex in realisation, since so many factors, such as target grade, grade variability, equipment choice, equipment movement, and downstream blending all have alternatives which can be traded off against each other, and all of which contribute to the costs and benefits making up the total NPV.There exist commercial packages for ore selection and mine planning. However, they are often of a ‘black box’ nature, and users are sometimes not fully aware of the criteria being applied. In particular, the treatment of quality as a multidimensional vector may be problematic. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the issues involved and to suggest an alternative set of approaches, which should complement existing commercial treatments.The discussion will be illustrated specifically by reference to the mining of iron ore, but the issues are relevant to a wide variety of mining situations

From the ventilation aspect, there is a basic difference between advancing and ezreating longwall layouts. Particular rroblems with retreating, using differing mining methods and layouts include high gas emissions, spontaneous combustion and -radients. There is an acceptable method of crntrolling the environment at the return end a retreating longwall face without the use a multiple heading system. Incorporated in the design is the facility to practice xtensive methane drainage, thus ensuring a ntrol of the rate of methane emission into the main roadways. Rand Mines, Limited, located in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa has recently completed feasibility studies which have lead to the initiation of two major coal strip mining ventures. A minicomputer based mine planning system was developed to perform the feasibility studies. The broad approach of this system is to utilise inter.-actively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of mining engineers and geologists. This paper reports briefly on the outline of the system and at greater length upon certain aspects of its use.

In the expansion program of the iron ore pelletizing plant at Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel Ltd., an automatic computer control of products fineness on grinding department is practised. The main problem of the process control of a grinding system is scattering of measured fineness values of products. The scattering comes from the inherent nature of grinding systems, sampled powders and measuring systems. A method is developed to presume the exact status of the plant from scattering products (fineness values and to achieve a stable con trollability of the plant by utilizing the computer. An on-line fineness analyzer, an automatic sampling device and vari-speed air separators are also developed to compose the automatic grinding plant. This report introduces the fundamental epts and results of the automatic fineness rol system of the grinding plant.

The CSIRO has pioneered the development and use of certain classes of magnetic resonance (MR) for mining applications. The MR technique is a radio frequency-based spectroscopy that provides highly quantitative measurement of selected ore minerals. MR has many inherent advantages for bulk sensing in mining applications, including deep sensing penetration into most bulk ores with the use of non-contact sensors that are robust and tolerant of demanding mine conditions. The highly discriminating nature of the technique also provides the very desirable attribute of robust and simple calibration, that can often be performed prior to sensor installation. Rapid sensing (within seconds) at very low grade (few hundred ppm Cu) has been demonstrated, as well as sensing at high tonnage rate. Besides sorting applications, MR may also be applied to preconcentration applications involving very large volume sensing including: (i) haul truck sensing using portal arrangements, where truck destination assignment may be dynamically determined based on the truck grade, (ii) in-pit gantries used for loading trucks that may similarly be equipped with sensors for truck assignment and (iii) deep mine bench sensing, recently progressed through a CRC ORE project, where local bench grade is determined at the few-metre lateral scale and at depth prior to blasting, to aid selective blasting and ore extraction. MR sensor prototypes have been developed for each of these applications and have been tested in laboratory or limited field conditions. To inform the value proposition for truck or bench sensing, initial analysis of truck assignment improvement based on an analysis of in-situ mine bench grade has been performed for a porphyry style deposit. The prototype sensors, preliminary results and future technology development and objectives will be described.
