PISCES - the Planning and Information System for Coal Export Services has been developed by Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) to ensure the efficient and economic operation of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain. PISCES is a computer based integrated information and management system to coordinate operations commencing at minesites through the coal chain to shiploading at the Port. The PISCES system comprises a central database around which a number of planning modules interact. These include interactive programs for train planning and timetabling, stockpile management, berthing analysis and a coal shippers enquiry system. PWCS has previously developed - number of computer based systems for planning, controlling and monitoring complex coal handling operations and the extension of the PISCES system to the Hunter Valley Coal Chain is another initiative to assist the Hunter Valley Coal Export Industry in looking confidently towards the Future.

FOR some years past it has been usual to specify high-grade copper for use for many purposes, but the practice of specifying zinc of a high degree of purity for certain purposes is of comparatively recent origin. It is a practice, however, which is extending ag the effect of the impurities in zinc on products manufactured therefrom becomes widely recognized.The notes hereunder are intended to briefly survey the principal uses to which high-gr.ade zinc is being put, and, wherever possible, to indicate the effect of the impurities normally present in the lower grades of zinc.In the United States zinc is graded into five divisions, known respectively as "High-grade" "Intermediate" "Brass Special" "Selected," and "Prime Western." The maximum amounts of impurities allowed in the various grades are indicated in Table I,which is compiled from data published by the American Society of Testing Materials:In addition, it is specified in an cases that the slabs shall be reasonably free from surface corrosion or adhering foreign matter. The objective of this paper was to determine if recent advances in numerical electromagnetic wave propagation modelling techniques could be used to study the propagation of GPS signals over arbitrary terrain. Specifically the effects of diffraction and multipath were to be modelled accurately for propagation over arbitrary terrain surfaces defined by a digital terrain model. Ideally the model was to be in three dimensions and cover an area of a few square kilometres with a simulation height of a few hundred metres. Simulations were to run on current technology PC's with run times less than a few hours. A relatively new technique that involves a numerical solution to the Parabolic Equations can be used to solve for two-dimensional propagation over any type of terrain. The PE provides a direct solution of Maxwell's wave equations by approximating the Helmholtz scalar wave equation. This technique does not rely on the study of individual ray paths as used in the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). It was decided to develop a two dimensional Parabolic Equation code, using the Fourier Split/Step method that allowed propagation over arbitrary terrain (; ; ). The model boundary conditions assumed that the satellite transmission was a plane wave, and that the lower boundary was a perfect reflector. Propagation simulations from the model accurately provide the amplitude and phase of the propagated plane wave at all points within the model domain. The PE model was used to study the effects of diffraction and multipath caused by various types of terrain commonly found in an open cut mining environment. The study of diffraction errors was relatively simple, because we are simply concerned with amplitude of the signal as it diffracts about an obstacle. If the amplitude is above the level receivable by a GPS receiver then the diffraction error can be obtained from the geometry of the terrain obstacle. The study of multipath is more complex, as the computed phase from the PE model is ambiguous and the presence of multipath can only be inferred. Thus the absolute magnitude of the nmltipath error is not currently determinable, though the results of some new work is shown here. This paper shows that diffraction effects can cause significant errors in range. It also shows the effects that multipath has on the received amplitude of the signal and the received phase of the signal. A discussion is made of further work that is presently underway that will allow the direct determination of the multipath error by comparing the ambiguous phase with a reference phase.

The commissioning organisation and procedures were set up on the basis that commissioning personnel, while being competent, would be unfamiliar with the equipment. In addition the commissioning process would have to be completed quickly. The organisation coped with all of these problems and more.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulfide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

Peraluminous metamorphic rocks may form from a variety of protoliths by a range of processes. Stratiform bodies of such rocks are relatively common in the Precambrian, but less commonly, also occur in the Phanerozoic. The protoliths of such stratiform bodies may have been regionally deposited chamosite-rich sediments, with varying amounts of clastic component, or may have resulted from the in-situ depositional or diagenetic alteration of volcaniclastic sediments, ranging in composition from rhyolite to basaltic andesite.Stratiform peraluminous metasediments, especially those of low to medium metamorphic grade, and relatively iron rich, may be genetically associated with, or be the host rocks for, a variety of styles of mineralization, especially for the ores of An, Ag, Cu, Zn and Pb.

Sampling is often the most critical part in process analysis. When the mean of a continuous lot, such as a process stream within a given time interval, is estimated by calculating the mean of several samples, the uncertainty of the estimated mean depends usually on the sampling strategy. Three different strategies can be used: systematic, stratified or random sample selection. The standard deviation of the lot mean is different for these methods so that systematic sampling usually gives the smallest and random sampling the largest standard deviation. Pierre Gy developed a method where the sampling errors of one-dimensional lots for these three strategies can be estimated from a variogram, which is calculated from a variographic experiment, ie from a set of one-dimensional time series measurements with fixed sampling interval. While variogram is an excellent tool for characterising and displaying the variability of autocorrelated processes as function of time, the sampling error estimation from it is quite laborious, however. In this work an alternative method for estimating the sampling errors was developed. The process is divided into strata of equal sizes, varying the length of strata similarly to variographic analysis. For stratified sampling the standard deviation estimates are obtained by analysis of variance and for systematic sampling by fitting a linear regression line to each stratum and calculating the residual variances. By pooling the individual variance estimates the variance estimates that are corrected for autocorrelation are obtained. The new method was tested with simulated and real data sets having periodic, random and/or drift fluctuations. For stationary processes the results agreed well with the results of the GyÆs variographic method. The method can probably be generalised to estimate the sampling variance of higher-dimensional lots.

The far reaching consequences of designing pillars for coal mines, while retaining concern for safety and economics, are cause for the search for refinement of the existing engineering methods to continue. Coal pillars, while having various functions within the overall mine plan, are the basic structural elements that assure the stability of a mine. Reliable coal pillar design methods take into account criteria which the pillars should meet in specific applications. These applications include typical mining situations such as the partial extraction room and pillar method with and without subsidence considerations, high extraction rate room and pillar, longwall mining chain pillars, and barrier pillars. However coal pillars are onlyu one element of a three element roof-pillar-floor system, weakest element of which system usually determines the stability of the excavations; however, the mining engineer can ony change dimensions of a pillar, properties of the surrounding strata remain beyond his control. The state of the art approach in pillar design places emphasis on recent developments in research. A widely encountered problem in certain coal fields is where pillars are underlain by weak floor strata. The resultant pillar design constantly maintains the perspective of the reliability of the design.

Optimising the blast is a major issue in the blasting business. It generally means acting on the blasting pattern (drilling, charging, detonating) in order to get a given æresultÆ. This result may either be related to economic reasons, such as the fragmentation influencing productivity, or technical reasons, for example vibrations and projections. Within the frame of the EEC funded Brite-Euram project entitled æBlast-ControlÆ, involving academic research and applied expertise, a general methodology was developed to approach such a problem and currently applied to the industrial partners of the project and final end-users of the generated results. These partners are the limestone ALZO quarry of the CALCINOR group in the north of Spain and the dolomite DMD (Dolomies-de-Marche-les-Dames) quarry of the LHOIST group in the east of Belgium. A first part of the project, over 18 months, was dedicated to establishing a clear relationship between productivity of operations from drilling to primary crushing and the fragmentation resulting from the blast. Extensive monitoring of blasting, production performance and fragmentation data was carried out and automatically collected into a database on both quarries. As expected, it appeared that excessive amounts of fines or boulders were substantially reducing productivity and thus profitability of the operation. Furthermore, an æoptimalÆ fragmentation was assessed for the quarries to run at the best (high throughput, low cost). The second and last part, for the remaining 18 months, was then dedicated to adapting the blasting practice in order to orientate the fragmentation towards a æbetterÆ one. A very common problem normally addressed by any consultant. Nevertheless, the target was not limited to solving the problem for these two quarries, but also to develop a generic method to address this blasting adaptation process and to implement it into a computerised tool. At this stage, it is then obvious that portability of the method and the system are major qualities to be looked for. This paper is aimed to present how this method was developed, how the system was implemented and how it was finally used.

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) is one of the leading base metal producers in India. It operates a two-smelter Complex at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. At this zinc-lead smelter zinc is manufactured by the conventional hydrometallurgical route and lead is produced by Blast furnace technology generating residues or wastes which contain substantial quantities of metal values. Disposal of such wastes is a problem in any non-ferrous industry. Both the stringent environmental regulations and the changing industrial scenario emphasise the need for industrial research to find economically viable and environmentally friendly technologies to recover the metal values from these waste materials. The in-house R&D Centre at Vizag Zinc Smelter (VZS) thinking globally re-engineered its activities and major thrust was given for converting waste to valuable metals and metal compounds. Basic analytical chemistry with the hydrometallurgical concepts has been adopted in developing these innovative technologies. In this paper attempts are made to provide a clear history of the different waste raw material, the process developed for each raw material and their superiority of over other parallel work. Most of the processes described here are pilot plant tested and under patenting. The process flowsheet, results obtained and advantages of each process are presented. This paper provides a consolidated approach through which the varied smelter waste materials can be processed with cost effective and eco-friendly innovative technologies. In-house R&D efforts at VZS with its contribution and achievement in converting æwastes into wealthÆ technologies are presented in this paper on the following the major thrust areas:recovery of zinc from liquid effluent; recovery of zinc from effluent treatment plant (ETP) gypsum sludge; production of highly pure electrolytic zinc metal powder from zinc bearing gypsum residue/sludge generated at the effluent treatment plant; hydrometallurgical recovery of copper as copper sulphate solution which can be used for CuSO4.5H2O, copper cathode/copper metal powder from copper-cadmium cement; recovery of manganese, lead and silver from anode mud generated at Zinc Cell House and 4-metal extraction/recovery of manganese, cobalt, copper and nickel from Indian ocean bed manganese nodules; recovery of zinc, lead, silver and sulphur values from silver concentrate residue generated at the froth flotation process; recovery of silver and lead as lead-silver sponge/lead-silver sulphide concentrate from lead bearing residues; recovery of lead, silver and copper from copper matte; recovery of antimony as antimony metal or lead-antimony master alloy from antimony bearing dross; and recovery of nickel and dimethylglyoxime from Ni-DMG complex.

A quantitative knowledge of underground mine ventilation requirements and conditions has become increasingly important, both to meet statutory requirements and to ensure high levels of safety and productivity within mines. The ACIRL Mine Ventilation System MINVENT was designed to provide a flexible means of analysing the behaviour of an underground mine ventilation system under a variety of conditions. It is not sufficient to rely solely on the analytical tools such as ventilation network analysis computer programs - these must be supported by the expertise necessary to conduct an accurate underground ventilation survey as well as experience of typical conditions to be expected in the evaluation of proposed extensions to a new or existing mine. When planning a new mine, the ventilation engineer can use the program to draw on a set of typical ventilation parameters, seam and proposed mining methods. These have been assembled as a result of numerous ventilation surveys conducted by ACIRL in New South Wales and Queensland.

The energy consumption for producing metal from ore is strongly linked to the chemical stability of mineral being processed, availability and richness of the ore, and process route. Energy efficiencies are particularly linked to the process route. The energy efficiency of high temperature operations vary considerably but energy efficiencies greater than 70 per cent are achieved for large-scale metal production. Low temperature processing through grinding, leaching and subsequent electrowinning use large amounts of energy. In particular, grinding and electrowinning suffer from low overall energy efficiencies. The physical chemistry of a new proposed low temperature route, reactive ball milling, is unclear but preliminary evaluations indicate that it is likely to suffer from high energy consumption. In conclusion, low temperature processing routes for metals generally consume more energy that comparable high temperature processing routes.

The question of effective energy utilisation in grinding mills is not new. There are several conflicting arguments about tumbling mills, whether the efficiency is around 1 per cent or maybe 10 per cent, or even much lower. The energy not used is assumed to be lost as heating of the pulp, the grinding mill body, the charge, generation of shock waves and vibrations, etc. Stirred media mills on the other hand are generally considered to have better energy utilisation, but their energy efficiency is still not that clear. To shed some light on this a pilot-scale, wet stirred media mill was investigated over a range of operating conditions. The wet stirred media mill is a Drais PMH 5 TEX pearl mill fitted with an electric motor at 11 kW. It has been investigated over a range of operating conditions to try to balance the dissemination of the input energy in forms of the net grinding energy, mechanical energy losses, and the heating transferred to the pulp, the mill, the charge, and the cooling water. It is found that approximately 20–40 per cent of the input energy accounts for the grinding process. Also, that the difference between gross and net input electrical energy is mainly disseminated as heating of the pulp and cooling water. Mechanical energy losses appear to be much smaller than the heating effects. The use of a dispersant seems to mainly influence the heating effect.

Planning has been thorough, and very large capital expenditures have been made by companies to provide high standards of accommodation, services and amenities. But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. The much-vaunted early success of some iron ore, bauxite and coal projects has led to a belief that the success of all mining projects is assured. Those holding this belief ignore the vagaries of mineral deposits and of markets, and the need to amortise large high-risk capital expenditures, much of which is spent on social and industrial infrastruc- ture. A new process has been developed to remove the impurities copper, cadmium, cobalt and nickel from a zinc plant electrolyte by cementation on zinc dust. The process has been tested in the laboratory and in a continuously operated pilot plant. It has been found that cadmium, in the presence of small amounts of antimony in solution, assists the removal of cobalt. Cementation is conducted in two stages: the first stage for removal of copper with a small excess of zinc dust to produce a relatively high grade product, the second stage for removal of cadmium, cobalt and nickel by addition of zinc dust in the presence of anti- mony. The excess zinc and the cadmium present in the second stage cementate can be selective- ly recovered by slow leaching in spent electrolyte. Zinc dust processes in use elsewhere are described and compared with the present system for use in the Risdon circuit.

Mill liners provide the wear-resistant surface within grinding mills, they also impart motion to the mill charge, ie the grinding process, by providing the key between the charge and mill shell, and, at the discharge end, they remove the ground contents of the mill. As semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills have grown in size the process aspects of liner design and their impact on mill performance have become particularly important. While feedback from practical experience is critical to good mill liner design, increasingly sophisticated computer-based tools are being developed to assist in mill liner design.
