This paper reports a computational study using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a mine ventilation system. Ambient air is injected to a rectangular mine drive through a circular duct. Moisture evaporates from shaft wall depending on flow properties of air in the drive-duct system. The physical process involves simultaneous momentum, heat and mass transfer. A species transport equation is employed to account for the moisture concentration in air. The momentum equation is solved using standard k- model, while energy and species transport equations are solved using standard expressions for moisture evaporation rate and heat flux from the drive wall. The aim of this paper is to investigate effectiveness of CFD simulation in relation to mine ventilation in a drive where a significant mass transfer phenomenon occurs. Results from simulation are compared with existing data from a site in Victoria.

Geological structure at PT Karimun Granite Quarry, in Karimun Island û Indonesia, has three primary joint sets that cross between them. These primary joint sets are the principal factor influencing the geotechnical safety of this quarry. In order to get stable geometry of the quarry in terms of height, width, and slope for single and overall bench, we need an appropriate stability analysis method to prevent failure and maintain stability. The Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) is used for this rock mass system. The geometries resulting from this analysis have been implemented and have given a stable quarry until now.

A Master of Applied Science degree course in Mining Geomechanics commenced in 1983 at The University of New South Wales, taught by extern- al (correspondence) studies. The course is aimed at graduates employed in the mining indust- ry, and especially people involved in geomechan- ics projects on a routine basis in remote locations. This kind of course is unique in Australia and is one of only two correspondence programmes available at this University. The author designed the course and nursed it through the early years, and was Director until 1986. The paper describes the teaching and assess- ment methods and also discusses aspects of admin- istration and coordination of such a course. It is concluded that an important need of the mining industry is being catered for and it appears that similar correspondence course for- mats would also be useful in other areas of the minerals industry.

The mining of an underground orebody requires development both in waste and ore before stoping commences. Regardless of what metal is being extracted, the waste development is minimised to reduce the cost per unit of metal mined. At the Western Metals Zinc Kapok mine site, reducing the cost per tonne of lead and zinc mined is paramount. Decline waste development costs can be minimised by methods such as increased gradient or reduced drive size. Ore development will also involve some mining of waste. The degree to which waste mining can be minimised will depend on the thickness and dip of the orebody. The drive geometry will also determine the percentage of waste within the face. It is by mining methods such as resue mining that selective mining may be used to maximise the amount of metal mined and reduce waste dilution. Resue mining can be used around a set of selection criteria established by the mine site. These selection criteria will determine how resue mining can be applied to the mine site. Selection criteria include firing times, number of headings available, acceptance criteria for percentage lost metal, dilution and most importantly operator acceptance. The single pass or two pass resue mining method should be chosen depending on the site acceptance criteria and selection criteria. The Western Metals Zinc Kapok mine site has established a set of parameters which accept the two pass resue mining method for the mining of the ore drives. The blasting results from a single pass resue method were reviewed during more recent trials in a single heading. Through a comparison of results, the parameters allowed the decision to determine the applicability of resue mining and its current form to Kapok. This paper outlines the parameters set by the Kapok mine site, reviews these in relation to the two forms of resue mining and examines the criteria which make this mining method applicable for Western Metals Zinc.

Increasingly, mineral operations need to manage water as a key business asset. Managing water solely as an environmental issue leaves a business exposed to social, cultural and economic risks associated with water. Adopting a company-wide strategic approach, which takes account of the true value of water will provide businesses with opportunities and risk protection. Rio Tinto has recognised the business imperative for water stewardship and has responded by producing the Rio Tinto Water Strategy. This strategy commits the company to managing water assets in a responsible manner, taking account of environmental, social and economic values. To incorporate the true value of water in site decision making, a new set of tools is required at the operational level. A key part of the strategy focuses on developing a framework to value water based on case study examples from around the Group. This paper presents progress on the companyÆs experiences in developing and implementing the water strategy.

In those days no one worried - there were plenty of other things to do. But in'these days it is different. Everyone worries- and. because there is so much worry, emotion has entered the picture. And, worse than that, capital is being made in political circles. People who were quite unaware, five years ago, that any problem existed, have now become experts on the subject, and shout to high heaven that something should be done - and yet they go on using the leaded high octane petrol they deplore so much. And even scientists, who should know better, adduce only such evidence as fits the argument in hand. And the Press is not without blame - some of its reportings is open to serious question, whatever may be the excellence of its motives. The point is made that one should know what one is talking about. And make sure that the evidence quoted is fact - and make sure too, that all the evidence is used, not only that which suita the argument.

Activity-composition-temperature relations for both gold and nickel have been determined for the solid and liquid states of the gold-nickel system by the application of the Margules equations. These relations are in satisfactory agreement with activity measurements of nickel in the solid state, the observed phase boundaries of the system between 700 and 1725°K, as well as being consistent with data on the enthalpy of mixing.

This paper discusses the concepts of core risk associated with mining projects and operations and illustrates the types of core geotechnical risks and consequences that may relate to a range of different mining methods, with recommendations on risk management procedures to ensure that the core risks are under constant and ongoing scrutiny and priority management focus. These core geotechnical risks can and should be identified at the initial mining method selection stage, during a feasibility study. They should form part of the auditing of the project and the decision-making regarding the project viability. They should then be built into the ongoing management structure of the project, right through into ongoing operations, with regular audit and review.

Ore reserve reporting practices in the United States may be broken into four general categories as follows: ò Reserve reports, often of an unofficial and preliminary nature, which are made through the news media. These are often based on exploratory drilling or sampling results. ò Reserve reports made for the purpose of raising public funds by issuing securities on the stock market, or as part of other filings to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. ò Reserve reports to obtain private funds from banks, financial institutions, or other investors. ò Reserve reports for internal use and planning by companies operating or evaluating mineral properties. This paper discusses current practices for each of these types of ore reserves reports and reviews recent changes which have affected those practices.

The Australian mining industry has changed dramatically over the past 20 years in terms of mining methods, mining equipment and human resource policies. The industryÆs approach to safety and health in terms of attitudes, style of legislation, and risk management techniques has also changed significantly. These changes have had and continue to have major impacts on the design of underground mine ventilation systems. In some areas, trends are clearly emerging. In other areas, mine ventilation planning remains very æreactiveÆ and is performing poorly in terms of providing a safe and healthy work environment at a reasonable cost. New concepts involving the role of ramps and shafts, the provision of refrigerated air, æventilation on demandÆ and newe gress and entrapment approaches are likely to be incorporated into mine planning and operating practices over the next ten years. This paper discusses these and other trends and identifies some likely future developments in the area of hardrock mine ventilation.

Poor performance in the several stages of the magnetite recovery circuit, coupled with poor desliming through inefficient and over- loaded desliming screens, led to excessive magnetite consumption. An accurate and reliable sampling programme was established covering all outlets of the plant. Emphasis was placed on frequency of increments in an endeavour to detect extreme conditions of short duration. Systematic checking of the entry points to these outlets than identified those sections of the recovery circuit at fault, namely magnetite recovery separators and the heavy media cyclone product rinsing screens. More product rinsing water was provided, and modifications to the rinsing screens improved the efficiency of these units. Consistency of operation through automatic control of level eliminated the sudden massive losses in the magnetic separators. Load on the recovery circuit was then reduced by improvements to the raw coal desliming screens. A 50 per cent reduction in magnetite consumption was achieved.

WHEN reading reports on reefs and lodes, one often comes across the statements "short shoot," "narrow shoot," "wide shoot," & c.From a number of reports in the writer's possession, some by members of the Geological survey, it is plain that the words "short," "narrow," "wide," "long;" &c., are used somewhat carelessly.In one official report on a certain field, for instance, the reefs are described as having "short, rich shoots"; another report on the same field states that "the reefs were characterized by narrow shoots, rich at the surface." Again, Charters Towers is described as having "wide shoots"; another writer says they are "long shoots. "The writer has read again of "short shoots which went down like pipes," and of "narrow shoots of limited extent." No doubt one can make out what is really meant, but the language is mixed. It is apparent that "narrow" is meaning the same as "short," and that the shoot has not much length in a horizontal direction. Nothing is said about the thickness or width of 'said shoot, or its depth. The "wide" shoot is evidently a "long" one; its thickness 01' width and depth is not specified. When we consider these terms, it is seen that only a few words are needed, and that these few should (as they do) have a definite meaning. In the course of his mining experience, the writer has seen shoots of almost all sizes, and some have been very long (in horizontal measurement), and have been followed down for great depths, these shoots being the best type-Charters Towers, Walhalla, &c., are examples.

Hazards in underground mines are concomitant with the mining of mineral deposits and have their source in a minerÆs work environment. The authors of the paper have undertaken a trial classification of these hazards into three groups, depending on the sphere of their occurrence:lithosphere, ie rock mass, atmosphere, ie air in mine workings, and technosphere, ie machines, equipment and facilities in mine workings. The lithosphere creates such hazards as bumps, rock outbursts, the atmosphere is a factor causing fires, methane explosions and climatic hazards, whereas accidents concomitant with an operation of machines and equipment occur in the technosphere. Assuming that the number of accidents in the mining industry, concomitant with hazards, reflects the degree of safety, it has been shown, that in Poland they are under control to a large extent.

The care necessary to ensure a reliable estimate of average value from the individual values of a series of bore holes sunk in any alluvial deposit containing coarse gold was well exemplified in checking over the mining returns from a previously bored deposit in Central Otago, N.Z. While the working returns are always liable to vary considerably from bore values in any particular sub-section of an area, still, over any considerable area, the two must check within small limits, if profits are to be calculated and capital raised on the average value given by boring.The present figures have probably more value than those from, dredge returns since accurate measurements are difficult to obtain in irregular water-filled dredge paddocks, whereas in the case under review the paddock walls stood almost perpendicular, and, as the measurements were taken and checked in the empty rectangular excavation, the yardage estimate may be taken as substantially exact.NATURE OF DEPOSITThe area consists of a narrow valley deposit of fluvio-glacial origin, the original deposit having been eroded and the gold reconcentrated by post glacial rivers. The wash is between 80 and 90 ft. deep, and is formed in two distinct layers:(i.) The top layer from surface to 70 ft. or 80 ft. consists of about equal quantities of gravel mixed with glacial drift, and a small amount of clay. The gravel is typical discoid glacial stone of a maximum size of about 4 in. diam. by 1 in. thick, and consists of soft micaceous schist and laminated slate. This upper layer of wash contains no coarse gold whatever, and very little fine; indeed, in mining, the top 30 ft. is discarded without being passed over the boxes.(ii.) The lower layer of wash to bedrock is similar to the upper, except iihat it contains about 10% of larger discoid stone up to 12 in. diam. by It in. thick; 90% of the gold is concentrated in this bottom layer.

The adsorption mechanisms of various thiol collectors can be subdivided into four classes: chemisorption, EC-mechanism, catalytic oxidation and metathetical substitution. The chemisorption mechanism occurs at potentials below the thermodynamic potentials for the metal-thiol compound formation and is reversible. The EC-mechanism occurs when the mineral is sufficiently oxidised to liberate metal ions to form metal-xanthates; therefore, it is observed with more easily oxidisable minerals and/or with collectors having large pK values. Thionocarbamates adsorb on sulphide minerals via the EC-mechanism due to their large pK values. Although the adsorption occurs at very low potentials as compared to xanthates, it is irreversible with large overpotentials. On the other hand, the adsorption of modified thiophosphates and thiophosphinates occurs near the thermodynamic potentials because of the low pK values. The metathetical substitution is believed to occur only when a mineral is highly oxidised. These classifications are useful for studying the effects of electrochemical potentials and the molecular structure on the collector adsorption Mechanisms.

Over the past 18 months the De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd operations have made a concerted effort to move away from using the traditional shock tube initiating systems. These systems are being systematically replaced by the use of electronic delay detonators (EDD). Various trials were conducted in both host rock and kimberlite rock masses to improve tunnel advance as well as to optimise delay timing during trough openings (Ngoma et al, 1999; Mohle, 1999; Baltus, 2000). The high cost of EDDÆs, when compared with traditional initiation systems, led to a number of detailed studies being conducted on the mines where EDDÆs were being used. These studies aimed to quantify the additional benefits when blasting with electronic detonators. The studies showed that the change was justified on the basis of increased quality control and reliability gained through the use of EDDÆs. However, these benefits attract other related benefits, like fragmentation control, and backbreak reductions. When compared to the shock tube initiating systems the increased development face advance and the reduction of oversize during production blasting using EDDs, compared favourably to the less costly systems. As blasting engineers gained experience and confidence in the use of the system bigger blasts were initiated in mass under-cut blasts and slot raise development, by using multiple hole firing and second delay periods between holes. In the open pit and sublevel open stope mining methods the control of the fragmentation distribution and the effect of the mass of explosive detonated during a blast is detrimental to the loading and hauling production rates and the stability of the rock mass behind the blast. With a stable rock mass the bench cutting can be executed to establish steeper overall slope angles leading to large cost savings due to a reduction in waste stripping. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate through quantification that the use of the EDDs as an initiating system improves all-round blasting performances and assists in meeting customer requirements. While specific definitions of the main categories of mineral reserves and mineral resources are becoming well established through the efforts of the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) and the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO), there has been perhaps less attention paid to the standardisation of language used in the definition and reporting of Mineral Exploration Results and a clear understanding of the transition to Inferred Mineral Resources. This is an area of significant importance to small and medium sized enterprises in the mineral exploration sector as it represents in many cases the only tangible information by which the reader or potential investor can evaluate the future potential of such enterprises. By its very nature information in the Mineral Exploration Results category is incomplete, and frequently complex, and it is open to a broad range of interpretation by readers of various competency levels and disciplines. Many will have a short-term speculative view rather than a long-term perspective, with others out deliberately to misrepresent the information, and as such it can have an enormous impact on investment decisions if the risks associated with this information being reported are not fully understood. Authors of reports on Mineral Exploration Results, who may be Competent Persons or company directors, have to put themselves in the shoes of the reader of the report, second-guessing if you like what the reader will understand by a report, which in many cases will be of a highly technical nature. This raises reporting dilemmas and questions that require to be understood and addressed. Looking at reports on Mineral Exploration Results from the other side, readers have a degree of responsibility as well, particularly if they engage in an advisory or communications role. The tendency of commentators, journalists, analysts, and bulletin board posters to over-exaggerate the significance of a particular exploration result is all too familiar. Questions arise here as well about whether there should be more regulatory supervision and control exercised over those who use this information, all of whom greatly influence investment decisions, and many of whom have no idea there is a Reporting Code, far less an understanding of it. Examples are given and questions raised to illustrate the dilemmas surrounding the reporting of Mineral Exploration Results. In order to retain credibility with markets it is incumbent on companies to be transparent, not to be selective and to report all material information. On the other hand, information has to be taken and read in its proper context in order to avoid fuelling dramatic and unjustified company share price escalation. Timing of course is another factor that can affect the market price of shares, which may be beyond the control of those making the reports. Emotive and imprecise language, however, when reporting Mineral Exploration Results, coupled by speculation, can trigger damaging short runs on shares and destroy credibility where formerly there was long-term promise. The paper will review how Mineral Exploration Results are dealt with in various jurisdictions, and conclude that there has to be a balance between prescription and the tempering of undue optimism on the one hand, and the entrepreneurial spirit, which the industry needs, on the other.

Rock dynamics is one of the most important topics in the field of rock mechanics and rock engineering. The spectrum of rock dynamics is very wide and it includes the failure of rocks, rock masses and rock engineering structures such as rock bursting, spalling, popping, collapse, toppling, sliding, blasting, non-destructive testing, geophysical explorations, science and engineering of rocks, earthquakes, and impacts. Undoubtedly, the rock dynamics issues in Mars would remain to be the same. Although mankind has no direct access to Mars yet, the Mars exploration rovers (Opportunity, Sprit, Curiosity and Perseverance), Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and InSight Lander provided very valuable data so that some rock dynamics issues can be recognised. The author reports his considerations on rock dynamics issues in Mars from very careful examination of images and data provided from MERs and MRO and discusses their implications.

Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited have recently commissioned a 14 Megawatt power station adjacent to its underground coal mining operation at Appin NSW. The power station is fuelled by methane gas extracted from the coal seams 500 metres below the surface. The methane is compressed and cooled prior to its injection into the combustor of a single shaft gas turbine. The turbine is coupled through a reduction gearbox to an alternator. There is sufficient power generated to cover colliery load, with any excess being exported to Prospect County Council, which is the supply authority for the south western region of Sydney.

Wheal Gawler was Australia's first metal mine. This leader was followed by an army of other metalliferous underground mines and surface operations in Australia. As a mine it was not highly significant economically because its small total production of nearly pure galena had low multiplier effects on the economy of South Aus- tralia. Its importance lay in its symbolism: here was a silver-lead mine close to the new town of Adelaide posing the question of what other min- erals lay in the Mount Lofty ranges and in the fields beyond.
