ABSTRACT Diesel-powered loaders are a pillar of modern underground metal mining. As these mines are getting deeper and hotter and the emission regulations stricter, ventilation costs are soaring, affecting production cost. Also, the cost of diesel fuel is expected to rise. These may make the use of diesel engines more problematic. Electric load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are an interesting alternative. This paper compares features and performance of diesel and electric, cable-powered LHDs. It overviews equipment offerings, and compares, analyzes and discusses technical parameters, operational problems and cost issues. The paper gives some conclusions about electric LHD applicability and performance, indicates possible applications, and suggests further research work.

"IntroductionFLUORSPAR has been found at several •localities in Newfoundland, but all the commercial deposits discovered to date are in the vicinity of St. Lawrence, a town on the southeast coast. Most of the veins are within six miles of St. Lawrence harbour, and between sea-level and an altitude of 400 feet. The St. Lawrence Corporation of Newfoundland, Limited, and Newfoundland Fluorspar, Limited, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of Canada. Limited. are the two producers.With the arrival of 1953, the St. Lawrence area entered upon its twenty-second •consecutive year as a producer of fluorspar. Production has increased more or less steadily during this period, as is shown by the fact that approximately one-half of the total shipments to date have been made during the past six years. Between four and five hundred men are employed by the industry, and more than $1,250,000 was paid out in wages and salaries during 1952. Shipments during that year reached an all-time high of 81,283 tons valued at $2,484,943, compared with 67,925 tons valued at $1,966,477 in 1951 (1).As a result of an agreement made in July, 1952, with the United States Defence Materials Procurement Agency, production of the St. Lawrence Corporation, Limited, and St. Lawrence Fluorspar, Incorporated, an affiliated company, will •be increased by .approximately 50,000 tons of acid-grade fluorspar per year. The contract extends over a period of four years, or until 150,000 tons of acid-grade concentrates have been produced."

"Introduction This paper will discuss the current operations of Westar Mining Ltd. and give a brief history of the company and of the Crowsnest Pass area. Westar is an integrated company involved in mining, processing and marketing coal from its mines in southeastern British Columbia and shipping coal from Westshore Terminals at Roberts Bank, located just south of Vancouver, B.C. It is two-thirds owned by the B.C. Resources Investment Corporation and one-third owned by the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and a consortium of Japanese coal consumers. Operations in southeast British Columbia consist of four coal mines and two processing facilities (Fig. 1). The Elkview Coal Processing Plant near Sparwood, B.C. receives its raw coal from Balmer operations (Harmer open pit), Balmer South (Panel 6) an underground hydraulic mine, and Balmer North an underground room-and-pillar mine. The fourth mine, Greenhills, an open-pit operation, is located near Elkford, B.C. and has its own processing plant. The Balmer mining and processing complex is the largest metallurgical coal facility in Canada producing up to 7 .5 million tonnes of clean coal per year. The Greenhills operation, completed in mid-1983, has a capacity of 2.8 million tonnes. The high-grade metallurgical and thermal coal produced is primarily for export markets. The major customers are Japan, Korea, Brazil, Pakistan, Chile and Taiwan.Our coal and that produced by other mines in Alberta and British Columbia is shipped to the international markets through Westshore Terminals Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary. Westshore will have an annual capacity of 22 million tonnes of coal and accommodate ships of up to 250,000 dead weight tonnes by 1984 when its current expansion program is completed."

"Petro-Canada's project investigative and experimental underground work in the Galt coal seam at Kipp, Alberta included the construction of an emergency egress and ventilation raise from surface.The Galt coal seam is 206 m below the surface and covered by 8 m of shale, sandstone and clay beds of the Oldman Formation, 128 m of shale, bentonite beds and sandstone of the Bearpaw Formation, and 70 m of glacial till and basal gravel. Free water was encountered from sand lenses in the glacial till and the basal gravel.Excavation for the ventilation raise was a nominal 2 m diameter and it was lined with a welded, continuous, steel liner of 1.2 m 1.D.Excavation in the glacial till was carried out with a surface bucket drill rig combined with hand mining. Ground support in the glacial till consisted of liner plates and backfill grout. The Bearpaw and Oldman formations were excavated by employing standard raise boring techniques. The individual liner sections of the continuous steel liner were assembled on surface and the entire liner column was lowered into the raise by employing hydraulic lift climbers. The liner column was back-filled with concrete.IntroductionThe Lethbridge Coal Field comprises an area of approximately 1 165 square km in the vicinity of Lethbridge in southern Alberta. Pacific Petroleums Ltd. proposed in a Preliminary Disclosure in January 1979 ""to open an experimental mine prior to development of a producing underground mine with an initial rate of 540,000 tonnes per year"". A 2 900-hectare group of leases in the Kipp-Coalhurst area was selected as the primary target for the Kipp experimental mine. The scope of work for the experimental mine included the construction of an access shaft with production capabilities, the construction of a ventilation and emergency exit raise, drive-ages in coal to yield a bulk sample, gathering of geotechnical information and the testing of experimental mining methods."

"A study of the physical properties of long grades of asbestos fibers imported into the United States during the past eight years has disclosed information that will contribute materially to effective selection and use of fibers for electrical products. The study embraced fiber lengths, volume resistivity under three different conditions, total iron by chemical analysis, magnetic rating, conductivity of an aqueous ex-tract and its sodium chloride equivalent.The fibers examined included chrysotiles from Rhodesia, British Columbia, and Barberton area; marlime from Bechuanaland and Province of Quebec; amosite and crocidolites from Africa and Australia; and anthophyllites from Mozambique and from Georgia in the United States. Volume resistivity values provide a relative basis for estimating the electrical performance of end products; magnetic rating -an estimate of the quantity of iron compounds present in excess of those in the asbestos structure; conductivity of an aqueous extract; and an estimate of the ionizable impurities in fibers.Tests of these factors yield in-formation, not heretofore generally known, which may serve as a guide in the evaluation of asbestos fibers for electrical products."

The increasing move to block cave mining methods (including sublevel and panel caving) to access deeper and lower grade ore deposits as near surface sources become exhausted raises questions as to the extent and magnitudes of caving-induced subsidence as it may affect strain-sensitive infrastructure on surface. Predicting these surface deformations is difficult as they tend to be discontinuous and asymmetric due to large movements around the cave controlled by geologic structures, rock mass heterogeneity and topographic effects. Of further impediment is the sparse number of case histories available, in which actual subsidence measurements are reported to provide guidance and empirical constraints for subsidence calculations. This study reports the development of an exhaustive and comprehensive database of available (i.e. public domain) subsidence data from block cave mining operations from around the world.

Introduction In 1937, the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was carrying on an extensive exploratory diamond-drilling programme. Most of this drilling was done on the 4100 level, the lowest working level in the mine. One of the exploratory diamond-drill holes, at approximately 12,500 feet from the portal of the tunnel, encountered heavily mineralized stringers of chalcopyrite and sphalerite in silicified grey schist. The mineralization was encountered just to the hanging-wall of the green mottled schist at a point 350 feet south of the 4100 tunnel. To delimit this new orebody, drifts and cross-cuts were driven on 3500, 3800, and 4100 levels to the hanging-wall in the area of the projected mineralization. On the 3500 level, the top of the mineralized zone was encountered. The zone was thoroughly explored by drifting and diamond drilling. The mineralization, however, was not sufficiently concentrated to be of commercial grade. On the 3800 level, the zone was found to consist of disconnected stringers of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Drifting was continued to the west and a long lens-shaped area of grey schist containing fairly heavy stringers of chalcopyrite was delimited. This lens later proved to be very close to the top of the commercial mineralization of the No. 8 orebody. On the 4100 level, a diagonal cross-cut was driven to the footwall of the downward projection of the mineralized zone. Diamond-drill holes from this cross-cut indicated a zone of heavy mineralization. A drift was driven off the cross-cut parallel to the zone and some distance to the footwall of it. Further diamond drilling disclosed a mineralized zone approximately 300 feet long and 35 feet wide containing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite. The foregoing development work indicated a fairly large lens of mineralization of sufficient concentration to be classed as ore between the 4100 and 3800 levels. To explore this mineralization at depth, long diamond drill holes, dipping at minus 57° and minus 80°, were planned from some point to the hanging-wall of the orebody. The 4100 level was not suitable for small development headings, due to wider gauge track and larger cars than on the levels above. Therefore, a raise was driven from the diagonal cross-cut on the 4100 level to a point some 70 feet above and just inside the footwall of the orebody. From the top of the raise, drifts were expanded east and west to delimit the ore zone. In addition, a long cross-cut was driven 350 feet to the hanging-wall, and drifts were opened east and west from the end of the cross-cut to provide diamond-drill stations for the exploration of the orebody at depth.

"Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. For a mining operation, the determination of the best place to build haul roads is typically done by hand, or with the assistance of rudimentary shortest path optimisation algorithms. Straight line, point to point, modelling of costs is often used with distances multiplied by constants that are based on rise of the road between the points. Failings of this approach are that straight line approximations are notoriously poor as they do not take into account areas where a truck cannot travel. In addition, the rise and fall of the road may vary considerably over the truck journey meaning acceleration/deceleration and varying truck speeds are not taken into account. Lastly, the use of rudimentary optimisation algorithms means properties a truck must obey such as minimum turning circles, line of sight restrictions or even that the truck must travel forward at all times are not taken into account. Thus solutions generated may not be feasible, let alone optimal. In this paper we discuss a state of the art parallel Artificial Intelligence tree search technique for solving haul road location problems. As well as the above properties, factors such as road utilisation, cut and fill, and construction costs are taken into account. The combination of advanced modelling and fast computing and optimisation techniques produces significant benefits both in terms of time to generate roads and cost savings. Preliminary results where this method has been used are discussed.

The Canadian Clean Power Coalition (CCPC) was created in 2001 to protect and enhance Canada’s vast coal and other carbon-based resource wealth, and to ensure that environmental public policy decisions recognize that these resources are a Canadian asset, not an environmental liability. To achieve its mandate, CCPC has undertaken to demonstrate technologies for use in new coal-fired power plants to control air emissions including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxides (SOx), mercury (Hg), and particulates (PM). The first phase of the demonstration project assessed three existing technologies for coal-fired power plants that reduce all emissions, including CO2, to levels equivalent to or below that of gas-fired power plants. The technologies considered in this phase included integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), ‘oxyfuel’ combustion, and amine scrubbing of pulverized coal. These technologies were evaluated with three coal types: Eastern bituminous, western sub-bituminous, and lignite coals. This paper presents the studies, conclusions concerning the capital and operating costs of these technologies, the cost of electricity produced (with CO2 removed), and the cost per tonne of CO2 avoided. It also discusses the potential for using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, and possible technology enhancements for improving the competitiveness of gasification of low-rank western Canadian coals. The second ongoing phase of CCPC’s work includes the design and construction of a commercial-scale plant to demonstrate the feasibility of integrated gas combined cycle (IGCC) and/or polygeneration technologies and the potential for using the CO2 generated for enhanced recovery of conventional oil.

A study was conducted on the seismic activities and associated rockburst events that took place at an underground Canadian metal mine over a period of five years. In the first stage, a back analysis of the microseismic database led to the identification of clusters of major events. The locations of these clusters were identified with respect to the local geology and the planned mining sequence. In the second stage, a numerical model was constructed using the finite difference code FLAC3D to simulate the in-situ stress, mine geometry, local geology, and stope sequence. Mining-induced stress fields were compared against two rockburst events that took place during this period, as well as against the various geologic units present. It was shown that by combining microseismic analysis and numerical modeling, it was possible to provide a basis for evaluating the influence of the in-situ stress regimes and stope sequencing on mining-induced seismic response.

To strike a fair balance is not always easy, nor is it possible always to satisfy both sides. Still, under the free enterprise democratie form of government to which I think we al! subscribe, no better way of handling the problem has yet been discovered."

The paper describes the processes developed and piloted by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for recovering copper, in the form of specification copper powders, from Lynn Lake sulphidic copper concentrates and Fort Saskatchewan Refinery by-product copper sulphides. The process includes ammonia pressure leaching and hydrogen reduction from solution. Nickel and cobalt present in the con-centrates dissolve in the leach solution and a method was developed for separating these metals from the cop-per. Methods are described for con-trolling the physical properties of the copper powder produced in the reduction vessel. The chemistry of the process is briefly discussed and the effects of some of the more important process variables are described. This paper aims to describe the reasons and methods to extend enterprise networks into underground mines. Currently mines use a number of communication networks for telephones, PLCs, two-way VHF radio and computer networking. Each system can have different wiring, protocols, converters and interfaces all which require expansion and maintenance. The convergence of voice, video and data using Ethernet and TCP/IP has the very real benefit of one ?wire? for underground networks. Now that the majority of underground equipment can communicate using TCP/IP, network convergence can offer reduced network expansion and maintenance costs. Cost savings are good, but the truly exciting aspect of network convergence using Ethernet is the low-cost, high speed wireless networking now available . These wireless networks offer an opportunity to facilitate mining automation even on a small budget. How would mine operators change they way they operate if they could gather vehicle location and data in real time? What about controlling equipment remotely? The list of applications is long and includes traffic control, dispatching, real-time ore blending, tele-operation, automated production reporting, vehicle health monitoring, elimination of paper forms and immediate network access for surveyors and geologists. An ideal converged network for underground mining would be robust, inexpensive, easy to expand, enable fast and secure connections while keeping voice communication performance equivalent or better than what is now provided by VHF radio

"A large-scale expansion to Pacific Coast Bulk Terminals Ltd. has now been completed and placed in operation. The original plant, built approximately eight years ago, consists of the direct rail-car to ship transfer of bulk commodities. The extension includes additional rail-car unloading, a transfer house system for directing commodities to storage or ship, major storage and reclaim facilities, a second shiploader and a second deep-sea berth. In addition to the facilities for overseas shipments, a wood-chip loader and a barge berth have been installed for domestic shipments of wood chips and, occasionally, for other local commodities. The design considerations imposed by the nature of the products to be handled are covered in this paper."

Metallurgical furnaces are made up of complex multi-component systems that must function either together or in parallel for safe, and reliable operation. Thermal expansion of single material components experience induced stresses during heating and cooling, which can lead to cracking or failure. Multi component elements and systems can experience significant thermally induced stresses during both steady state and transient temperature conditions. Examples pertaining to temperature effects on refractory, copper cooling blocks, furnace shells, and complete systems will be discussed. The purpose of the paper is to highlight how stresses and strains are developed due to differential thermal expansion.

"The CompanyCardinal River Coals is jointly owned by Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidated Coal Company of Canada (Consol). The Luscar mine is operated by Luscar Ltd. and is located 40 km south of Hinton near Cadomin, Alberta (Fig. 1). The plant sits on the old townsite of Luscar, Alberta, which was founded in order to develop the coal in 1912 (Fig. 2). Initially, the coal was mined by Luscar Ltd. for heating and steam generation and used quite heavily by the railways for their steam locomotives. In 1955, the mine was decommissioned as the demand for coal for tl1ese purposes had dropped off. In 1969, the mine was re-established by Cardinal River to provide metallurgical coking coal for its customers in Japan. The coal is mined from the 13m thick Jewel Seam by open pit methods at a 10 to 1 stripping ratio. The run-of-mine coal is then cleaned to meet customer demands.The PlantThe clean coal preparation facilities at Cardinal River were extended in 1980 in order to increase the feed rate from 450 t/h to 800 t/h. The extension is a separate plant which can be operated on its own or in parallel with the old plant. In addition, modifications have been made to the fine coal circuit (hydrocyclones added), the coarse refuse circuit, (refuse bucks replaced by a refuse conveyor which backfills a pit), and the fine refuse circuit (solid bowl refuse centrifuges, refuse classifying cyclones, and hydra-rake thickener no longer utilized) since the plant was built in 1969. The plant production of 3 M t per year with a yield of 78% is achieved by first screening and breaking the run-of-mine material to a top size of 1 ½ in. The feed is then slurried, sized, and processed in three different washing circuits. The washed coal is mechanically dewatered, thermally dried, and then stored in a 14 500 t capacity silo or on a 300 000 t stockpile. The fine refuse is thickened and pumped to the same pit to which the coarse refuse is being conveyed"

"Artificial Intelligence includes excellent tools for the control and supervision of industrial processes. Several thousand industrial applications have been reported worldwide. Recently, the designers of the A1 systems have begun to hybridize the intelligent techniques, expert systems, fuzzy logic and neural networks, to enhance the capability of the A1 systems. Expert systems have proved to be ideal candidates especially for the control of mineral processes.As successful case projects, an expert system based on on-line classification of the feed type using neural data analysis is described in this paper. The essential feature of this expert system is the classification of different feed types and their distinct control strategies at the plant. In addition to the classification, the expert system has a database containing information about how to handle the determined feed type. This self-leaming database scans historical process data to suggest the best treatment for the ore type under processing. The system has been tested in the Outokumpu Finnmines Oy, Hitura mine. Other projects have been reported to be in progress.INTRODUCTIONIn the past ten years considerable researches have been done in the application of artificial intelligent methods in process industry. The technologies of fuzzy logic, neural networks and expert systems have received several thousand applications worldwide: monitoring and analysis of process operations, fault diagnosis, supervisory control, feedback control and scheduling and planning of operations. Recently, the designers of these systems have begun to hybridize these intelligent techniques to enhance the current capability of expert system. Complex signal processing, neural networks, fuzzy logic and rule-based systems are also implemented to develop new so-called smart or intelligent sensors, actuators or components. Field buses are playing a more and more important role in automation systems and in imbedded systems. The development of field buses has allowed the distribution of smart components over networks."
