La propriété a été explores anterieurement a maintes reprises depuis les années 1930, parfois jusqu'aux travaux souterrains, notamment par les groupes Mooshla, Warrenmac et Westwood Cadillac ainsi que par Silver Stack Mines.Ces zones auriferes se situent a l'intérieur de larges halos (jusqu'à 1,000 m x 400 in) de pyrite disséminée (2-5%) dans des tufs a lapilli et des agglomerate acides montrant des concentrations locales de pyrite. La zone 1, découverte en vérifiant par sondage une anomalie E.M., coincide avec une de ces concentrations de pyrite et la teneur en or est ici proportionnelle a la pyrite. Ce secteur se distingue par l'intensité de l'altération en séricite. La zone 2, qui s'étend sur près de 600 m, se situe dans un agglomérat acids, avec une faible teneur en pyrite, et montre de fines veinules de quartz-carbonate.Du point de vue géophysique, aucune methods ne donne des résultats probants: la polarisation provoquée montre de tree grandee anomalies correspondant aux halos de pyrite, tandis que lee concentrations de pyrite détectées par les méthodes E.M. (VLF ou EMH) sont loin d'être toutes aurifères. Les relevés magnétiques aident a établir la structure la où un certain contraste de susceptibilité magnétique est present. Les essais minéralurgiques préliminaires indiquent que la concentration de Bette mineralisation aurifère ne présentera pas de problems majeur."

"IntroductionOver the past twenty-five years of improvements to scooptrams In the Ontario Division of Inco Ltd., records indicate that on average, an 8 yard capacity machine at 80% availability will load, haul and dump about 100TPH from an average stoping area. This, essentially, means that Inco mines are limited to 2000 TPD as an approximate maximum production cap per minute. Some of the improvements made to scooptrams over this period have been:• dry disc and oil immersed brakes on larger loaders;• to replace air over hydraulic systems;• modulated shift transmissions;• greater breakout and tramming capacities by using larger engines and buckets;• operators' compartments have been enlarged and better seats,• joystick controls and air-conditioned cabs have been utilized'• major cost savings have been realized through tire maintenance improvements; and• major savings, safety improvements and increased ore recovery by using remote controls.After reciting the improvements listed above, and the list is by no means exhaustive, it is quite obvious that scooptrams are a mature product and that major design or performance improvements will not occur in the futre. Any futher improvements will be incremental in nature. Loading, hauling, and dumping with scooptrams is a batch process and as such is limited in its total output.Continuous Load/Crush/Convey Systems:In order to improve productivity, a radical new system was required. The target was 2000 tons per shift. In 1984, to meet the goal, Inco acquired the rights to a contiunous loader from Canadian Mine Services. Inco made modifications to the original prototype machine, such as: (I) conversion from rail mounted to crawlers for increased mobility; (2) a hydraulic cooling system was added; (3) flight bars were changed from cast to forged; (4) motor horsepower increased to 200 hp from 150 hp. Emerging from these modifications came a machine known as the CL-looo Oscilloader (Fig. 1).The CL-looo Oscilloader is an electric hydraulic 35-ton machine which is crawler mounted and has a drawbar pull of 30 tons. It has an adjustable frequency, oscillating lip which simulates the digging action of a manual .shovel. This action agitates and lifts the muckpile enough to allow it to settle by gravity onto the chain and flight conveyor table which then removes the ore to the tail end for discharge into either a crusher, a conveyor, a truck, or a combination of these.Late in 1985, six oscilloaders were fabricated and put into Inco mines for field trials. At Creighton Mine some early field trials were conducted with a rail mounted continuous loader loading directly into 140 cu.ft. Granby cars. Much of the field testing was in VRM drawpoints with the Oscilloader loading into 20-ton trucks or into Teletrams . At Levack Mine, by puttmg the truck on remote control, it was possible to have the operator run the Oscilloader and load his own truck (Fig. 2). At McCreedy West Mine, Copper Cliff North Mine, and Copper Cliff South Mine, the Oscilloaders discharged directly into 26-ton trucks."

"Radioactive minerals are found together with the more familiar ore minerals in veins, gossans, and pegmatites, Since they have a peculiar property, that of giving off penetrating radiation, the simplest means of field detection is by the use of some radiation detector.The two principal radioactive elements one may encounter are uranium and thorium. These may occur separately or together. At present there is very little demand for thorium and hence radioactive occurrences should be examined with some care to determine which element is present. To do this it may be necessary to have a chemical analysis made of samples from the occurrence. Uranium minerals that do not carry appreciable thorium have a conventional occurrence in quartz or carbonate veins. They are distinctive in appearance. Pitchblende, the principal ore, is hard, black, and very heavy. It weathers readily to soft, powdery minerals •brilliantly coloured orange, yellow, and sometimes green. It may be associated with familiar minerals such _as native silver, nickel-cobalt sulphides and arsenides, chalcopyrite, and hematite.It is the purpose of this paper to review very briefly the types of radiation detectors available .and to draw some general conclusions as to the types most suitable for particular applications.The highly penetrating gamma radiation is the most useful for detection of radioactive mineralization. The alpha rays have little or no penetration, and beta rays are stopped by thicknesses of a millimeter or so of material. We shall confine our remarks principally to those instruments intended to detect gamma radiation. These are of three types."

"Corrosion of underground support measures constitutes a concern to industry in both safety and economic terms. It also represents a potential market for corrosion resistant materials such as stainless steel.In order to assess the market potential for a stainless steel friction rock bolt, a review of current corrosion processes and remedial or preventative measures in the underground environment was undertaken. This was supplemented by distribution to industry of a detailed questionnaire, concerning the magnitude and extent of support corrosion and the costs of current support measures, and by visits to selected sites. Following data synthesis, support costs were established and the economic benefit of stainless steel rock bolts evaluated.Stainless steel rock bolts can be an effective cost reducing measure in unscreened areas requiring frequent reconditioning. Their benefit is rapidly diminished, however, if only partial reconditioning is required, the reconditioning interval is long or if screening is required.While most industry personnel are receptive to the application of stainless steel support measures, the localization of corrosion problems and the potential high cost of this type of support are barriers to its widespread implementation. They have potential for use in extreme environments. However, this relatively small market may not be economically viable.IntroductionFriction rock bolts are the simplest of all interior rock fixtures. The friction resistance to sliding of the rock on the bolt is generated by a radial pressure against the borehole wall over the length of the bolt. Two types of friction rock bolts are currently marketed, the Split Set and the Swellex.Unlike conventional point anchor bolts, friction rock stabilizers may move relative to the rock strata and maintain their capacity even if rock shifts, a condition that sometimes loosens or breaks conventional bolts. Ease of installation, effectiveness in jointed as well as weaker rock, and the possibility of having relatively long bolts are a few of the many advantages which generate considerable interest in the application of friction rock bolts (Wijk and Skogberg, 1982). However, due to their thin-walled construction and large surface area, frictional rock stabilizers are more susceptible than conventional bolts to damage by corrosion. For this reason, they are normally not recommended for long-term use (Jolly and Neumeier, 1987).In light of the above discussion; the Nickel Development Institute commissioned a study by the Geomechanics Research Centre with the objective of generating a credible database for the assessment of the feasibility of a stainless steel friction bolt system in corrosive ground and mine environments."

"7.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter addresses the joint venture and examines a number of general concepts of the joint venture relationship. Chapter 8 looks at some specific concepts related to the provisions of a joint venture agreement, which are equally applicable to a shareholders’ agreement or other contractual relationship. The term “joint venture” is used because the author is a common law solicitor (a matter of convenience for which apologies are offered to civil law readers), but it should be noted that, in many aspects, the legal structure of an entity is irrelevant. It is the relationship of the parties, be they venturers or shareholders, that is important, and the areas of concern are surprisingly similar (except for terminology).The details of the joint venture relationship and agreement could fill several books. Accordingly, this chapter and the next focus on selected topics that appear to have caused problems or confusion or to be the basis for disputes. And remember that, although the following discussion is in the context of a joint venture, many of the comments apply, either directly or indirectly, to virtually any common undertaking and the agreement defining it.For interest’s sake, this chapter starts with a summary of some of the earlier types of agreements and arrangements that have evolved into the joint venture agreement of today in Canada, the philosophy of their format, and the reasons for their demise.7.2. The early discoverers were relatively free to roam and explore at will and, if they were fortunate enough to find something, they dealt with the appropriate government to acquire exploitation rights. The early interests lay in gold or silver. Workings were small, usually worked by the owner alone or with only a couple of helpers to extract the native gold or silver. If the owner wanted to move on, he could sell his property outright and use his stake to look elsewhere.As logging and mining camps were opened, the development of better roads and railways made access easier. Entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to make money by assembling large parcels of land and working them as a single operation. In order to do this, some owners who were not ready to sell out had to be convinced to do so through more attractive offers"

In the course of the hydrothermal refining of copper-nickel products containing covellite, oxidation of Fe2+ ions by the CuS?Cu2+ pair takes place, and iron is precipitated as hematite. Lower copper concentrations in the solution and higher solution acidity lead to the partial oxidation of sulphide sulphur, whereupon hematite is reduced by covellite causing iron to go back in solution. It is demonstrated that in the process of hydrothermal treatment of the covellite-containing solid product in pure water covellite oxidises millerite to polydymite (Ni3S4). Formation of polydymite during the process of refining seems to be due to millerite oxidation both by covellite and the CuS?Cu2+ pair.

"Abstract - The Domeyko Cordillera, the westernmost uplifted crustal block of the composite High Andes of northern Chile (20°S to 28°S) hosts a narrow N-S trending belt of Late Eocene-Oligocene giant porphyry copper deposits, which include Collahuasi, Chuquicamata, El Abra, La Escondida, and El Salvador. These deposits are spatially and genetically associated with the closing igneous activity along this range, prior to a 30 km eastward jump of the magmatic front in response to tectonic plate interaction. The porphyry copper deposits are also spatially associated with a major intraarc strike-slip shear system, the Domeyko Fault System. Although the tectonic uplift of the 3000 m to 5000 m high range has generally been assumed to be mostly Miocene in age, field relationships suggest that the Domeyko Fault System and tectonic uplift were active as early as the Eocene, coinciding with porphyry copper emplacement between 41 Ma and 30 Ma. Apatite fission track (FT) thermochronology provides both age data and a time-temperature history for rocks since they cooled below a temperature of ca. 125°C (equivalent to a depth of 4 km to 5 km under normal geothermal gradients) on their way to the surface during exhumation, or after a heating event. Apatite FT data from the Paleozoic crystalline basement of the Domeyko Cordillera indicate that at least 4 km to 5 km of rocks were eroded during exhumation of this tectonic block between ca. 50 Ma to 30 Ma (Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene), a time that immediately precedes and overlaps with the emplacement of giant porphyry copper deposits. The FT data constrain the age and duration of a period of crustal thickening and extensive erosion known as the Incaic compression, an event recognized in the Andes of Chile and Peru. Assuming that cooling was due to denudation alone, modelling of the FT data allow estimation of denudation rates between 200 and 100 m/My during this period. In contrast, exposures of pre-porphyry Paleocene intrusives on the western edge of the Domeyko Cordillera reveal apatite FT ages that are concordant with biotite 40Ar-39Ar dates, indicating shallow emplacement, fast cooling and negligible exhumation. The apatite FT ages of the Chuquicamata and El Abra porphyry copper deposits are only marginally younger than their 40Ar-39Ar dates, implying fast cooling/exhumation of shallow mineralizing systems (ca. 2 km to 3 km). Their FT time-temperature history is compatible with extremely low rates of exhumation (ca. 50 m/My) since about 30 Ma (Early Oligocene). This limited extent of erosion, due to exceptional aridity, has greatly contributed to the preservation of rich supergene enriched blankets above some of the porphyry copper deposits.A model is proposed, which is consistent with field relationships, geochemical, and geochronological data. High relative velocities and intermediate-angle oblique convergence between the Nazca and South American plates in the Eocene-Early Oligocene led to intra-arc transpression partitioned into reverse faults of opposing vergence and a right-lateral shear system (the Domeyko Shear System) localized along the magmatic front. Crustal shortening and thickening led to uplift within the Domeyko Fault System and to erosion of at least 4 km to 5 km. Crustal thickening deepened the zone of magma generation, and magmas accumulated in the lower crust, allowing small volumes to rise rapidly to shallow levels along transtensional domains of the regional shear system. A similar model of crustal thickening and shortening before and during porphyry copper emplacement in zones of transtension may also apply to the Miocene-Pliocene giant porphyry copper province of central Chile."

Subsequent to a campaign of pilot-kiln trials of firing bio-oil and natural gas, scale-up to commercial lime kilns was made using an in-house mathematical kiln model. Both dry limestone and lime mud kilns of 3.5 m OD. by 100 m length were used for bio¬oil firing simulations. Comparisons were made against natural gas firing on the basis of specific firing rate, off-gas volume, energy consumption and overall lime quality. Model simulation results indicate that conversion from natural gas to bio-oil with no productivity loss will increase energy comsumption by about 7.5% and total off-gas volume by about 8%. Alternatively, a 6% decrease in productivity would be expected if off-gas volume is maintained constant. The calculations are sensitive to deviations in the lower heating value (LHV) used in the simulations. A 5% increase in the LHV of the bio-oil, which could result from a 3% decrease in the moisture content, reduces the energy penalty to 2% coupled with a slight reduction in off-gas volume.

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited's open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west. Feasibility ore reserves were 28 million tonnes grading 106 g A g/t, 0.96 g Au !t and 0.38% Cu a strip ratio of 2.2 to I. A detailed mineralogical description has been presented and a comparison of the two ore zones is shown in Table I."

History The Aldermac mine is situated on the Nipissing Central railway near the ' centre of the township of Boischatel, Quebec, and is about ten miles west of Noranda. Aldermac Mines, Limited, is a subsidiary company of Towagamac Exploration Company. The property was staked by Messrs. Alderson and MacKay and McMartin, during the winter of 1922-23. During October, 1925, a copper discovery was made by K. W. Fritzsche, who was in charge of exploration work at that time, the first trench on this discovery averaging 8 per cent copper over a width of ten feet. This led to the discovery of another body 200 feet to the north, with an average of 3 per cent copper over fifteen feet in width. A magnetic survey was then carried out which led to the location of the large pyrite ore-bodies which have been developed in the past few years. Development work was carried on to a depth of 1,125 feet, and approximately three million tons of massive pyrite ore was indicated. Extensive metallurgical tests were conducted in the laboratories of the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines at Ottawa to determine the proper metallurgical treatment and the economic possibilities of the ore. Owing to the comparatively low copper content, and the uncertainty of the copper market, it was doubtful if the mine could be profitably operated for the production of copper alone. Messrs. Alderson & MacKay, however, realized the possibility of utilizing the large tonnage of pyrite as a substitute for native sulphur, 'which in past years has been imported into .Canada for the manufacture of acid and sulphate pulp in paper mills. They therefore organized the Sulphite Research Corporation with the object of developing an economical process of utilizing the pyrite.

Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texasgulf Incorporated, operates the Kidd Creek mine, a 10,000- tpd base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator, the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous onstream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8% and zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.

"A hydrocyclic system used for mineral separation at the laboratory scale results in the separation of more than 90% of micas. The system functions only by water and might offer advantages where other methods of mica separation are not available. INTRODUCTIONVarious methods for the separation of micas, wollastonite, and garnet, e.g., screening, flotation, magnetic separation, and heavy liquids, are well known (e.g., Spence, 1929; Bates,I960; Gillson et al., 1960; Benjamin, 1971; Connor and Kolhnar, 1991; Collings and Andrews, 1991). However, where these methods are not available, the separation of micas by a hydrocyclic system developed by Sarafi and Aftabi (1991) may prove to be economic. This note is a brief description of the hydrocyclic system. Minerals and MethodFor testing the recovery of mica and other minerals from different rocks (garnet-mica schist, skarn, and pegmatite), standard minerals were tested first, and then rock samples. Pure mineral standards were prepared from coarse-grained samples of pegmatite, mica schist and skarn; the grain size of the minerals separated was more than I cm. The Hydrocyclic System and Mineral SeparationThe hydrocyclic system is shown schematically in Figure 1. In the first step in mineral separation, mineral and rock samples were crushed, milled, and then sieved to minus 250 plus 125 microns. Approximately 10 gm to 25 gm of the sample were inserted in decanter Dt • The motor pwnps, M1 and M2, were then turned on and the water valve rl was opened. At this time, water was flowing turbulently (30 em3/sec. to 50 em3/sec.) and minerals were separated according to their crystallographic nature, density and!or habit. The fInal separation was done by exit valves r2, r3 and r4, while the motor pwnps were still operating. After each experiment, the rt , r2' r3 and r4 valves were closed and the motor pumps were turned off. Following this, minerals in each decanter and the mter were collected, dried and weighed. The whole time of the experiment was optimized to be about 10 minutes, but varied from 3 to 15 minutes for micas and garnets. respectively."

"A multipurpose program for a hand-held programmable TJ-59 calculator and PC-100C printer facilitates the evaluation of various mineral processing tests and the calculation of mass and metal balances. Its application is demonstrated by some example problems. Detailed user instructions are given for each application.IntroductionThe program listed in Appendix I is written for a programmable Texas Instruments TI-591 PC-100C calculator I printer combination. The program is applicable for the evaluation of:1) screen analyses;2) flotation test s; and3) mass and metal balances.Each application is demonstrated by an example problem and corresponding detailed user instructions. The ""measured"" data in the examples are fictitious and do not represent a real operation.The steps in using the program are the same for each of the three types of application, viz.:1. Enter the number of product fractions and press ""A"".2. Enter the measured weights (0) of each fraction and press ""RIS"" each time. After the last fraction has been entered, the printer automatical1y displays the total weight.3. Press ""B"" to calculate the weight distribution (Y). Once ""B"" is pressed, the printer automatically displays the weight distribution of all fractions.4. If the accumulated weight distribution (EV) is also needed, press ""RIS"". The printer now displays these data. This step is optional and may be bypassed.5. Press ""2nd A"" to prepare for entering of the measured metal assay (M).6. Enter the measured metal assays of each fraction and press ""RIS"" each time. If analytical data exist for more than one metal, each data set has to be entered separately in one sequence.7. Press ""C"" to determine the ""calculated"" head assay (MA) of all fractions.8. Press ""RIS"" to calculate the metal distribution (R). Once ""RI S"" is pressed, the printer automatically displays the metal distribution of all fractions. This operation is optinal and may be bypassed if desired.9. Again press ""RIS"" to obtain the accumulated metal distribution (ER). This operation is optional and may be bypassed.10. Press ""D"" to calculate the gangue distribution in the concentrate (W). One ""D"" is pressed, the printer automatically displays the data for all fractions. This operation is optional and may be bypassed.11. Press ""RIS"" to obtain the accumulated gangue distribution (EW). This operation is optional and ma y be bypassed.12. For more than one metal, press ""E"" to clear the memory for storing the assays of the next. Then press ""2nd A"" and start entering the assays of the next metal as described previously (6 to 11). THE British Columbia Coal Control was established in 1946 as a branch of the Department of Lands. Its functions are the administration of the Goal Act, the making of field and laboratory investigations bearing on the delineation and utilization of British Columbia coal deposits, and the dissemination of information concerning them. The Department of Lands in the Province of British Columbia retains and administers many of the Province's resources until such time as they are actively developed under the departments of Agriculture, of Forests, of Mines, etcc. The work of the Control is one of stock taking and appraising. We are picking up where the geological surveys leave off. In an effort to assist in the orderly, scientific development -of our excellent and extensive' ?Coat resources, we are bridging the gap between exploration and geological examination on the -one hand and mining on the other. All coal analyses required in the course of the investigations, together with? those requested by prospectors and others, are carried out in the very modern and efficient laboratories of the Coal, Petroleum, and Natural Gas Control. At its inception, the Coal Control began an investigation of coal seams in the Peace River area, specifically those contiguous to the Pine River valley about one hundred miles west of Dawson Creek. The occurrence of coal in the Peace River canyon, east of Hudson's Hope, bad been known since 1792, but the first record of production is for 1923.

"A mine shaft is one main development method of establishing access in an underground mine. The construction technology of the mine shaft sinking is complicated and large equipment setup on surface and in the mine shaft. The paper briefly reviews a single-line operation method, parallel operation method and mixed operation method as well as the features of the one operation method with the excavation, lining and installation. The special construction technology mainly would include ground freezing methods, full diameter shaft drilling methods, caisson methods, grouting technology and concrete curtain methods as well as other methods. The paper summarizes the shaft sinking numbers and effects by the special construction methods during different periods. The paper states the shaft sinking conditions and the each created record conditions in the coal, metallurgy, non-ferrous metal, hydropower, highway, railway, nonmetallic and other industries. The paper has a prediction on the shaft sinking requirements and development tendency in the future for China.INTRODUCTIONA mine shaft is one main development method of access in an underground mine. In recent years in China the new shaft mines represent 45% of the total number of new mines. With the development of new mining area under construction and the development of deeper mines, the ratio of the mine shaft as access for underground mines will increase. The construction technology of the mine shaft engineering will be complicated, the operation site footprint will be small and the working environment will be more difficult. The mine shaft sinking operation will often be varied by the geological conditions and affected by underground water inflows, seam gas outbursts, geothermal and other natural conditions. The safe construction of the mine shaft sinking will be challenged by all these conditions. Although the mine shaft engineering will only be about 5% of the total mine roadway engineering, the mine shaft construction period often will take over 40% of the total mine construction period. With the progress of modernized mine production technology and the construction of a high production and high efficient mine, the mine transportation roadways mostly would be set in the seam and the engineered amount of the mine rock roadways reduced year by year could cause more prominent long extensions of the mine shaft construction period. Therefore, in order to speed up the construction, to shorten the mine construction period and to realize the investment benefits as early as possible, the technical level of the mine shaft sinking should firstly be improved and the construction speed of the mine shaft engineering and sinking should be speeded up, which would have important significant benefits."

"The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

Dual phase (DP) steels are designed to consist of hard martensite dispersed in a relatively soft ferrite matrix, which offers a favorable combination of high strength with good deformability. Fiber laser welding (FLW) is becoming increasingly important for joining advanced materials due to its flexibility and deep penetration. In this study, the microstructure of a dual phase steel, DP980, welded by FLW technique was carefully analysed. Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulation coupled with analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the FLW process produced significant microstructural changes in a narrow heat affected zone (HAZ) and fusion zone (FZ), which can result in dramatic changes in mechanical properties. This is reflected in the micro-hardness profile obtained across the welded material. The salient phase transitions induced by the FLW, including the formation of new martensite grains in the upper-critical HAZ and FZ, are discussed.

The rare earth industry has gone through a metamorphosis over the past decade. The industry was basically unknown outside China until overnight it became the next hot topic on the financial streets of Canada and Australia. Suddenly various junior miners shifted from uranium and other out-of-favor commodities to rare earths as funds were easy to access from an investment community that did not understand the complexities of the space. The initial funding was done on traditional junior mining metrics of grade and deposit size. This has morphed over time to:1) Lights versus heavies2) Making a concentrate3) The importance of separation4) Off-take agreementsAt the peak of the market frenzy certain flagship operations were built using the “Not Made in China” moniker. Unfortunately certain errors were made during implementation, which are finally coming to the surface and making the rest of the pack wondering what will happen next. A review and update of some of the mistakes made and lessons learned will be discussed.BACKGROUNDAbout ten years ago awareness started to form around the rare earth industry and various groups recognized that because of the closure of Molycorp, Mountain Pass, and the dominance of China, there was a risk of uncertainty of reliable supply. This was not news for those active in the industry like Rhodia (now Solvay), the Japanese, South Koreans and other key consumers but to others it was like a light went on and rare earths became the new “.com” trend for investment banks, investors and some mining companies looking for the next hot topic.In the late 1990’s Molycorp accounted for around 20-25% of the world’s supply of rare earths, mostly lights (La, Ce, Pr and Nd), with small amounts of heavies from other sources. Then environmental issues forced the closure of the operation at Mountain Pass. Within six months China had increased production to plug the gap in supply. Around that time China was developing a strategy to leverage their position in rare earths and implemented a series of regulations to increase the value added component of rare earths inside China."

"Competitive pressures dictate that the mining industry moves to larger mobile underground haulage equipment with more advanced equipment mechanization, higher levels of autonomous operation of machines, and longer periods between access by maintenance personnel. Since such new machines will of necessity be more complex than existing designs, machine reliability has become a key issue in progressing toward advanced mobile underground haulage equipment. Reliability and maintainability models of such equipment are practically non-existent in the literature. This paper addresses the issue of reliability and maintainability of mobile underground haulage equipment on two fronts: reliability modelling to enhance decision making for maintenance planning; and reliability simulation to enable evaluation of more rigorous production planning scenarios. A case study from a gold mine in the Chilean Andes is presented, for which reliability models of mobile underground haulage equipment, specifically load-hauldump vehicles and underground haul trucks, are developed, and a reliability-based simulation implemented. "With todays economic trials and tribulations we have all become deeply engaged in costs and cost cutting in our field of mineral processing. Grinding is one of the most expensive unit operations. The cost of grinding media is the most expensive item in grinding costs. Therefore, it is only reasonable to attack the cost-cutting area by trying to reduce the consumption of media. This introduces the field of autogenous or rock-on-rock grinding.Rock-on-rock grinding is not new to us. It has been known for many decades;The South Africans used pebble grinding in the '20's for gold.Mr. B. Crocker was prompted for the same reasons to introduce pebble grinding at Lakeshore Mines in Kirkland Lake during the last war.The Buffalo Anchorite used beach pebbles in grinding prior to the war.Autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding is used quite successfully in the iron ore field. Base metals have their examples in Australia at Caba, in Africa at Komato and in Sweden at Aitik.Recently three mills in British Columbia and one in Arizona started with autogenous mills in their circuits. One was originally conceived to utilize a modified autogenous grind with a crusher in the circuit. All except the same mill had contingency plans for converting to semi-autogenous. All four mills have since converted to the semi-autogenous mode. These are Island Copper, Lornex, and Similkameen in B.C. and Pima Mining in Arizona."
