"Exploration drilling of evaporite sequences in eastern Canada has undergone significant changes in equipment, techniques and philosophy since the early 1970s. The result has been the recovery of full-size cores from properly conditioned and stabilized holes, high quality open hole geophysical logs, and high quality metallurgical samples. The majority of modifications have resulted from the necessity to preserve the integrity of the evaporite deposit, and thus ensure the potential development, combined with the need for cost-effective high quality information. This is particularly evident in the priority placed on the development of non-erosive drilling fluids, casing and cementing procedures. The results are applicable to diamond drilling exploration of evaporite deposits anywhere in the world.IntroductionThe majority of current technical and scientific literature and expertise available on such subjects as drilling fluids or cementing procedures is applicable to large diameter, deep (several thousand metres) oil-field type drilling . The differences between oil-field drilling and wire-line core diamond-drilling are dramatic: large diameter, deep holes drilled with a low rpm tricone bit using large volumes of fluid pumped through a large annulus versus small diameter, shallow (less than 600 m) holes drilled with a high rpm diamond-set core bit using small volumes of fluid pumped through a small annulus. Exploration drilling of evaporite sequences in eastern Canada in the early I970s was conducted using oil-field equipment and techniques to complete holes of moderate (1000 m to 1500 m) depth . The prohibitive cost of these operations has necessitated that subsequent exploration drilling employs modified diamond-drilling equipment and techniques developed as part of a transition away from oilfield methodology. The result has been full size core, recovery approaching 1000/0 and the ability to run open hole geophysical logs; a combination of factors enhancing the collection of high quality information (Carter, I989a)."

Enargite (Cu3AsS4) belongs among refractory copper minerals with very low hydrometallurgical extractability of copper. An application of enargite leaching in acid solutions leads to simultaneous dissolution of copper and arsenic and the final leach solutions have to be treated for the separation of both elements. However, the alkaline leaching of enargite is selective. Arsenic passes into leach while produced copper sulphide represents the raw material suitable for pyrometallurgy. The hydrometallurgical processing of mineral can be influenced positively by mechanochemical route. We have shown that more than 80 % of arsenic can be extracted from enargite concentrate by atmospheric alkaline leaching at 95 °C when mechanical activation in an attritor is applied. The produced Cu2S can be further treated with elemental iron where mechanochemical intervention is applied in the second stage of enargite processing. The final product forms Cu/FeS nanocomposite from which copper nanoparticles can be easily separated. The illustrated concept of copper obtaining from copper sulphide is an example of so-called “dry” processing, as reactions in gas and liquid phases are excluded. This concept of environmentally friendly metallurgical processing can be classified as an impetus for novel technology to produce copper from enargite concentrates.

The behavior of gold in hydrothermal systems is evaluated as a function of pH and oxygen and sulphur activities at temperatures to 250°C. Under conditions of stability of pyrite and argillic alteration as emblages, gold will be transported as bisulphide complexes. In systems containing significant amounts of arsenic, thioarsenide complexes may be important. Oxidation, dilution and reduction in sulphur activity would cause gold deposition from saturated solutions under these conditions. Gold chloride complexes will predominate under oxidized conditions where hematite or other oxides are stable and depo ition would result from increase in pH and/or reduction . Absorption and coprecipitation are po sible mechanisms of deposition for gold in certain low grade depo it . Low concentrations of gold in the transporting solution combined with the ignificant solubility of gold as bisulphide complexes, sugge t hydrothermal solutions rarely may be saturated with gold and coprecipitation with sulphides may be an important initial depositional process. Recrystallization of the sulphides in the presence of the hydrothermal solution would be re ponsible for release of gold to more table ite . "Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

Since the plant startup in 1972, the leaching and jarosite precipitation circuits at the zinc plant of the Kidd Metallurgical Division have been reconfigured several times to improve overall performance, and/or to respond to market conditions. For the most part, the circuit changes have been driven by two market factors: the price of zinc and the price of silver. Until recently, circuit modifications undertaken to improve zinc extraction and recovery came at the expense of silver recovery, and vice versa. In 2004, the plant was modified once again to produce a precious metals-bearing residue, but additional leaching circuits were added to ensure that zinc extraction and recovery did not suffer as a consequence. The development of the zinc plant of the Kidd Metallurgical Division is updated in this paper, with a focus on the recent circuit modifications and associated control strategies that were implemented to maximize zinc and precious metals recoveries, and control the quality of the jarosite residue.

"The Mountain Lake deposit is a tabular sandstone-type uranium deposit, hosted by the basal unit of Middle Proterozoic Dismal Lakes Group. Uranium occurs mainly as sooty pitchblende disseminated in stratiform lenses within gently dipping quartzose sandstone. It is associated with copper sulphides, pyrite, hematite, and traces of nickel and cobalt arsenides and of silver.Exploration HistoryUranium showings on the PEC claim group were discovered during 1969 by an airborne radiometric survey carried out over the Dismal Lakes-Great Bear Lake area by Aquitaine of Canada Limited (Bizard and Salat, 1969). Some drilling was done in the vicinity of the showings in 1975 by the company under a joint venture with Eldorado Nuclear Limited but the results were not encouraging (Hassard and Woollett, 1975). During 1972, Trigg, Woollett and Associates Limited conducting surveys for Imperial Oil Limited, discovered numerous high-grade radioactive boulders scattered over a distance of several kilometres north and west of the showings, and the area north of the PEC claims was staked as the YUK claims (Ahuja, 1974). A systematic study of the boulder distribution and Pleistocene geology suggested a source additional to the showings. More intensive exploration followed, and in 1976 drilling just north of the PEC claim group boundary intersected the main deposit at a depth of 75 m to 150 m, beneath overburden up to 60 m thick. Part of the deposit extends into the PEC claim group which is under exploration by the Aquitaine-Cominco Joint Venture.The following brief description is based on the presentations in 1978 by F. Hassard of Trigg, Woollett and Associates Limited at the Geoscience Forum in Yellowknife, and by S.S. Gandhi of the Geological Survey of Canada at the Mineralogical Association of Canada Uranium Short Course in Toronto."

Introduction Coal cleaning may be taken as meaning the separation of coal-as-mined into two or more fractions. Coal cleaning includes coal washing, together with any other means used in the ultimate preparation of coal prior to shipment (as coal) . The method of coal cleaning devised for any given mine must be one which is based entirely on the economic results obtainable. The installation of a high-cost and complex washing plant, designed to produce a low-ash dean coal, at the highest possible recovery, may be unsound practice. A crude 'roughing' washer may be the best result of sound engineering and operating consideration, and in some cases coal cleaning should be confined entirely to preparation at the face. Consideration of complete costs, to the point where the coal is actually sold, may show that certain seams are workable or not workable. Of the seams found workable, extraction of the whole or parts of the seam may be decided on. The portion to be extracted may contain rock or bone partings, which must be removed. It may be good practice to mine the extra portion and remove the objectionable materials by surface washing; or it may be that such materials should be removed underground, even at an increased mining cost. For instance, in some of the steeply pitching seams of the Alberta Crow's Nest Pass district, the removal of bone and rock at the face may be almost impossible under the usual 'up the pitch' or 'angle' mining methods, but possible by mining across the pitch so that the material to be rejected can be removed and gobbed. Again, if a complete seam is being extracted, investigation may show marked differences between top coal and bench coal, and if sufficient mine cars are being loaded from a chute at one time, the fact that such a place is working top or bench coal at the time may be reflected by peaks in ash content or size proportions at the ripple. It may be very effective coal preparation to smooth out such peaks.

"Historically, alot of jarosite was found in the leaching residue when leaching indium from secondary zinc oxide materials. The reasons for the formation of indium bearing jarosite were theoretically analyzed. The influence of controlling the acidity and the addition of reagents on the indium leaching yield during secondary zinc oxide processing was investigated. In order to increase the leaching yield of indium, a measure of controlling the creation and destruction of jarosite was proposed. The production data shows that the leaching yield of indium was increased from 60 to 96%, and the content of indium in leaching residue simultaneously decreased from 900g/t to 100–200g/t when implementing such controlling measures.INTRODUCTIONIndium does not occur as independent minerals in the earth’s crust and is mainly associated with complex sulphide minerals. Specifically some sphalerites can contain as much as 900g/t of indium. Most indium is recovered from by-products of copper, lead or zinc metallurgy. Therefore, the research on the recovery of by-products in non-ferrous metallurgy is important(Sinclair et al, 2006). The main technologies used for this objective in China include: •,pre-neutralization-reduction-precipitation indium process(Yu et al, 2008), •,countercurrent oxidizing acid leaching process and sulphation roasting-water leaching process(Cao, 2005), •,oxygen pressure acid leaching of zinc concentrate-P204 extraction process(Yang et al, 2006), •,doubleacid leaching-solvent extraction process on lead dross from a reverbatory furnace flue dust(Liu, 2003),•,an acid leaching-solvent extraction process on smelting ash(Zhouet al, 2005). Although high pressure and extreme conditions can be used to improve extraction from high iron bearing indium residues(autoclave processing), mild extraction with lower cost and lower environmental impact are preferred.This paper describes both how the indium extraction using mild conditions in a secondary zinc circuit was quite low and, how through XRD and chemical analysis jarosite formation was found as the main cause. The paper then proceeds to discuss a method for improving the leaching yield and the application of this method in industrial practice."

BauxsolTM, prepared by treating bauxite refinery residues with Mg2+ and Ca2+, has an excellent ability to remove arsenic from acidic waters. The addition of BauxsolTM to sulphidic waste rock at the Gilt Edge Mine, South Dakota, reduced As concentrations in leachate water from 35 mg/L to < 0.005 mg/L; the concentrations have remained below 0.005 mg/L for the five years since the treatment was initiated. However, ordinary BauxsolTM does not effectively remove As from near-neutral water and it needs to be acid-treated or blended with small amounts of reagents, such as jarosite or ferrous sulphate, to increase the proportion of positively charged binding sites on the particles. The use of a jarosite/BauxsolTM blend can effectively treat ponded water, and As(V) concentrations can easily be reduced from over 1 mg/L to < 0.001 mg/L; As(III) has to be oxidised to As(V) for effective removal. Metal contaminants in the jarosite are trapped by the BauxsolTM and only very small amounts of the As, or other elements bound during treatment, are liberated using a TCLP leaching test. The exhausted treatment reagents meet the criteria for classification as an inert solid and do not need to be disposed of in a secure repository.

Potassium-argon age dating performed recently on intrusive rocks from Copper Mountain indicates that the satellite Smelter Lakes and Voigt stocks have radio-metric ages which are indistinguishable from that of the Copper Mountain stock, as determined by Sinclair and White (1967). The complex of intrusive rocks known as the Lost Horse Intrusions also yields essentially the same radiometric age, as do biotite-sulphide-pegmatite veins on Copper Mountain.

Effect of the Envrionmental Improvements.Sulphur Dioxide Emission ImprovementsHistoryThe rejection of pyrrhotite in the concentrators is one method of reducing the amount of sulphur to the smelter and therefore the sulphur dioxide emissions. In the 1950s and 1960s, Falconbridge developed the capability to remove 54% of this pyrrhotite. Numerous attempts were made to increase this amount by treating the pyrrhotite for recovery of nickel and in some cases elemental sulphur. Processes tested and operated were: hydrometallurgical pilot plant, roast-leach commercial operation and nickel-iron refinery. None of these processes proved to be commerically successful for both technical and economic reasons. Falconbridge therefore redirected its efforts to reducing sulphur emissions by improving its smelting process under The Smelter Environmental Improvement Project. A major component of this project was the installation of a sulphuric acid plant to recover the S02 in the roaster off-gases."

"Abstract - The Kori Kollo gold deposit is hosted by a c.15 Ma sericitized dacite stock in the La Joya district on the Bolivian Altiplano. The mineralization is of the Bolivian polymetallic vein (BPV) type, with a significant amount of the gold reserves contained in the oxide cap. Field and microscopic studies, K-Ar dating, ??34S values of pyrite, alunite and jarosite, and ??18O values of alunite and jarosite demonstrate that some of this gold is supergene. Two types of supergene gold are present: minute gold grains, 1 to 10 microns across, of high fineness and associated with jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides; and ‘invisible’ gold, which is probably sorbed onto minerals such as jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides.Pyrite ??34S values fall in the limited range -3.5 ± 0.6‰, consistent with a magmatic origin. Sulfate ??34S values are homogeneous and overlap closely with those of pyrite (-1.2 ± 2.1‰), which supports petrographic evidence that sulfates replaced pyrite. By contrast, sulfate ??18O values are inhomogeneous with a large range (alunite +2 to 26‰, jarosite -5 to +18‰). These data are interpreted as reflecting kinetically controlled reactions involving various proportions of atmospheric oxygen and local meteoric water. This is typical of supergene alteration and is due to the seasonally dry climate of the Altiplano.The oxide-zone mineralogy is dominated by sulfates and iron oxy-hydroxide minerals with some phosphates and halides, which indicates that the groundwaters were acidic, oxidizing and relatively saline. Under these conditions the most likely complexes responsible for gold mobilization are halides.Geological data and K-Ar ages indicate that oxidation of the BPV deposits began at least around 11 Ma and possibly up to 15 Ma ago, and that supergene alteration lasted until around 4 Ma. During this period, erosion was minimal. Although supergene processes have been active on the Bolivian Altiplano since the Middle Miocene, in contrast to Northern Chile, enrichment of gold has not occurred."

Pyrite (FeS2) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) which could not be recovered, are present in mine tailings discharged from Bor copper mine. About 0.3% of copper (Cu) is contained in these tailings, therefore it can be considered as a useful copper resource. At the same time, pyrite is known to promote acid mine drainage, therefore it is necessary to detoxify the tailings. An efficient method has been proposed to recover copper and reduce the environmental impacts of tailings by a combined hydrometallurgical process of high pressure leaching (HPL), solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) process. HPL process yielded high copper leaching rate (>95%) when water (H2O) was used as a leaching media. On the other hand, pyrite contained in the tailings was converted to iron oxide by high pressure leaching. Stability evaluation of the residue obtained from high pressure leaching, confirmed almost no elution of metal ions. The percentage of copper extracted and stripped from the Cu-loaded organic phase reached 97.4%. Moreover, it was confirmed that a low iron concentration in the electrolyte of copper electrowinning, resulted in the improvement of current efficiency of copper electrodeposition. INTRODUCTION Mine tailings are a by-product obtained from the flotation process and there are billions of tons of already existing tailings all over the world. Moreover, several billion tons of additional copper tailings will inevitably be produced in the coming years (Onuaguluchi & Eren, 2012). With the declining average copper ore grade, alternative sources of copper are highly sought, mine tailings have a comparable copper grade to that of low-grade ores (0.2–0.3%) therefore, it can be said that copper mine tailings present a very important source of secondary raw material for copper production (Antonijevi´c et. al., 2008). Consequently, it is necessary to confirm the possibility of the valuable metals (such as copper) recovery from mine tailing in which copper content is about 0.2–0.3%. Our group investigates the flotation and high pressure leaching processes for recovering of copper from mine tailings. Previous work on related samples include copper and nickel flotation tailings from Botswana, and a low–grade copper ore sample from Chile. Impurities, which are associated metals in mine tailing such as iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) co-dissolve into the solution during the HPL treatment process. Therefore, separation of copper from impurities is necessary for selective extraction of copper from mine tailings and upgrading the copper concentration in the leachate to enable further purifying of Cu by electrowinning. Thus, it is important to investigate the possibility of applying solvent extraction for concentration of copper from leachate solutions of mine tailings (Onuaguluchi & Eren, 2012; Antonijevi´c et. al., 2008). In this study, LIX-84I was used as an extractant of copper from the leachate of high pressure leaching of mine tailing. As a fundamental solvent extraction investigation, the extraction behavior of copper was studied using a simulated solution of the leachate from the high-pressure oxidative leaching of mine tailing. The effects of; solution pH, extraction time, extractant concentration and phase ratio on copper extraction and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration on stripping were investigated.

"3.1. IntroductionAmong the six platinum-group elements (POE), four have identical cubic symmetry, two identical hexagonal symmetry (Table 3.1). Despite crystallographic differences, there is a clear relationship expressed in the chemistries of the POE: they tend to be mutually soluble in one another and can frequently substitute for one another in compounds with other elements. This chapter consolidates the data on phase relations of the POE and the compounds they form with elements selected for their known or potentially important mineralogical significance- As, Bi, Cu, Fe, Hg, In, Ni, Pb, S, Sb, Se, Sn and Te-together with selected data for the occurrence of POE in certain elements such as Au and Ag, and compounds such as FeS. Resources used to compile the data are those available from the chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature. First each element is discussed, with composition limits of solid solutions drawn from binary phase diagrams. Single element data are followed by a discussion of the relevant binary systems and a tabulation of data for binary compounds found in those systems (Table 3.2). Tables and diagrams for the ternary and quaternary systems for which information is available follow, and finally the very limited information on the solubility of POE in mineralogically important elements and compounds is presented.The chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature on the unary and binary systems is extensive and widely scattered in many languages and publications; fortunately, most of the data needed to compile this chapter can be found in reliable compendia. The most useful and most recent of these works is by Moffatt (1979), because it provides a ready index to all material relating to binary systems listed in previous compendia; furthermore, the Moffatt compendium will reportably be kept up to date by annual supplements."

Abstract - The Ta-Nb-Zr-REE-rich McKeel Lake alkali granite pegmatite-aplite dike swarm is hosted within the late Silurian multiphase alkali granite intrusion (Welsford) near Browns Flats in southwestern New Brunswick. A steep easterly dipping series of pegmatite-aplite dikes trending 170º can be traced 150 m along strike; they are up to 40 cm wide, closely spaced (10-20 cm apart), and interconnected by narrow branching dikelets that generally trend perpendicular to the overall strike direction. The Welsford intrusion has mantle A-type affinities characterized by enrichment of Zr, Ta, Nb, Th, and rare earth elements (REE). Two separate sets of dikes have been identified: (1) an unmineralized fine-grained porphyry, which occurs at depth and seems to be the youngest intrusive phase; and (2) a mineralized pegmatite-aplite dike swarm (419 ± 20 Ma) that crops out at surface. The mineralized pegmatite-aplite dikes likely represent a late magmatic, highly fractionated phase of the Welsford intrusion. XRF and INAA data indicate that the Welsford intrusions and related pegmatite-aplite dikes show elevated levels of Ta (74-220 ppm), Nb (750-3,040 ppm), Zr (1,450-36,000 ppm), Y (540-3,070 ppm), Th (170-870 ppm), U (60-250 ppm), Ce (430-1,950 ppm) and Yb (110-290 ppm). Electron microprobe analysis of two samples identified Ta-Nb- and REE-rich phases: euxenite, fergusonite, aeschynite, (Y)-aeschynite, and a REE carbonate.

"In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of ferric and ferrous couple on the pyrite surface was studied by application of the chronoamperometry technique in an acidic solution at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The effects of the pyrite origin, ferric and ferrous ions concentration on the electron transfer kinetics of Fe3+/Fe2+ reaction were probed. Tafel behavior of all the test conditions were developed. The results showed that the ferric-ferrous reaction on pyrite electrodes with different origins have a common mechanism, despite different reaction kinetics. The exchange current densities of the redox reaction have the same magnitude of about 10-5 A·cm-2, which is far lower than the value reported for the gold and platinum electrodes, but larger than that of the chalcopyrite electrode. The cathodic transfer coefficients are between 0.4 and 0.5, while the anodic transfer coefficients appear unusual with the lowest value being 0.23. It was also demonstrated that an increase of one order of magnitude of iron concentration has no clear effect on the exchange current density and cathodic transfer coefficients of Fe3+/Fe2+ redox reaction.INTRODUCTIONPyrite, FeS2, is mostly considered as a gangue mineral which frequently coexists with valuable minerals and metals, such as gold, copper and nickel. Its separation from valuable minerals can be a costly process (Chandra & Gerson, 2010). In refractory gold ores, the fine gold particles are locked inside the pyrite structure. Oxidative leaching of pyrite is a hydrometallurgical method to destroy the structure of pyrite and expose the fine gold particles to the cyanide solution in the downstream cyanidation circuit. Pyrite oxidative leaching can be achieved by oxidation of pyrite via oxygen and ferric ion(McKibben & Barnes, 1986). In fact, pyrite oxidation by oxygen and ferric is a significant source of acid mine drainage(AMD), which adversely causes serious environmental problems(V. P. Evangelou, 1995).The pyrite oxidation mechanism is accomplished in three consecutive steps: (i) pyrite is oxidized by oxygen and ferrous ion formation (Eq. 1); (ii) ferrous oxidation by oxygen and ferric ion formation (Eq. 2); (iii) pyrite oxidation by means of ferric ions (Eq. 3). "The Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. A site specific rock classification system was developed that characterised all the rock units based on the engineering properties governing the rock mass behaviour i.e. intact rock strength and defect characteristics (spacing, aperture, infilling, wall roughness and weathering) irrespective of the geological origin. This approach simplified the design and the on-site verification processes. Based on this classification system, rigorous quantitative statistical assessments of the available geological information including various laboratory and field testing were performed to derive the geotechnical design parameters for various rock classes. These parameters were used to complete geotechnical designs of retaining wall systems. INTRODUCTIONThe Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The key features include two interchanges, a 300m long viaduct, a large cutting through Sexton Hill with an associated 100m wide Land Bridge and retaining walls reaching 490m long and up to 22m high. This paper focuses on the derivation of representative geotechnical parameters for geotechnical design of the retaining structures supporting Sexton Hill Cutting including bored pile retaining walls and soil nail walls. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. Due to the complex geological nature of the site, an understanding of the regional and local geology, the typical behaviour of individual geological units and the implication of onsite variations from design intention are the ultimate challenges to the geotechnical engineer in order to select representative geotechnical parameters for design."

THE gold deposits of the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, in the Bridge River district of British Columbia, are closely associated with a long, narrow intrusive body of extremely variable composition, outcropping on the northeast side of Cadwallader creek and lying almost entirely within the property boundaries of the two companies. Other masses of the same type of intrusive rock are found in the district, more or less along the line of the main axis of the Pioneer-Bralorne in trusive, and have associated with them variable amounts of gold-quartz mineralization (Figure 1). The ore deposits of the district have been the subject of investigation by officers of the Geological Survey of Canada at various times during the past 25 years, and articles on the geology and mines of the district have been published by various individuals in technical journals.
