"The Aldermac deposit and associated prospects occur in the Noranda Archean volcanic centre of the Abitibi greenstone belt. Over two million tons of are grading 1.65% copper, with minor gold and silver, were mined between 1933 and 1943. The deposit has features in common with the Vauze and Millenbach mines in the same district.Recent detailed mapping, geochemistry and petrography combined with data from former diamond drilling and mining operations permit a re-interpretation of the Aldermac area. The orebodies and spatially related sulphidic zones are con eluded to be volcanogenic.The host rocks are a chemically bimodal suite of mafic and rhyolitic flows, volcaniclastics and related subvolcanic intrusions. Massive sulphide lenses are spatially related to a quartz-feldspar- phyric rhyolite dome and siliceous, volcanic-exhalative sedimentary rocks, The succession is cut by gabbro and syenite, related to later stages of volcanism, and by post Kenoran diabase dykes. Regional metamorphism attained the low greenschist facies, but the rocks lack penetrative deformation.Hydrothermal alteration is primarily an intense silicification of mafic volcanic rock s enveloping, or lying below, sulphidic zones. Chlorite and sericite alteration zones, including dalmatianite, are more locally developed and have a closer spatial relation to mineralization, as do epidote, calcite and calcic garnet.The structure is complex and cannot be explained by isoclinals folding; rather it reflects concurrent faulting, and extrusive and intrusive activity. Fault blocks were rotated and exhibit opposed facing; the original selling was possibly a submarine graben.Sulphidic zones occur within mafic and felsic volcanic rocks and at the interface between the two; there is thus potential for discovery throughout the known stratigraphic succession. Exploration conducted according to a volcanogenic model is advisable, particularly in the light of recent discoveries in similar rocks of the Amulet area."

"Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines are conducting research on cable-type ground supports to assess their material and support properties and to provide design criteria for implementing cable supports as a workable roof control system under various underground mining conditions. Much of this work involves laboratory assessment of the material and support properties of cable supports using both conventional and birdcage steel cables. Included in this assessment are single and double cables, effects of changes in embedment length on support strengths, water-cement ratios, use of breather tubes, and pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts.IntroductionSince cable supports were introduced in the early 1970s, considerable research has been conducted in laboratories and at mine sites to understand their behaviour. The U.S. Bureau of Mines began a laboratory evaluation project in 1985 at the Spokane Research Center (SRC) to study the behaviour of cables supports under uniaxial loads so that the effects of various cable support components, such as grout and breather tubes, could be identified. Other objectives were to compare the behaviour of various types of cables and grouts and to collect meaningful data for numerical analyses. Pull tests were conducted to determine how cables supports reacted under uniaxial loads and how they failed when ultimate loads were exceeded. Such data are essential for the development of numerical models for analyzing rock mass behaviour when the rock is supported with cables.Test ProgramBecause each cable support can be composed of either single or double cables as well as a breather tube, pull tests were designed to include a variety of samples containing these components. A series of samples containing a single conventional cable, a neat cement grout having a water-cement ratio of 0.45, and no chemical additives was selected as a standard (Table I). Then one component in the system, such as the presence of a breather tube, was changed, and results of tests compared to results obtained for the standard samples to determine what influence that component might have on the behaviour of the support system. If significant changes in test data occurred, they could be attributed to that one component. To control the quality of the samples, the physical condition of the cables and tubes were monitored closely, and compressive and tensile strengths as well as flow properties were determined for the grout used in each test series."

"Extensive screening revealed a seaweed (alga) biomass type which in its non-living state possesses a very high cobalt sequestering capacity comparable to that of activated carbon and the ion-exchange resin currently used in the cobalt production process. Performance of the new bio-sorbent material was studied by examining its equilibrium metal uptake isotherms generated under different solution conditions such as initial cobalt concentration pH, temperature, and the presence of selected cations and anions. The rate of cobalt uptake was determined, which is a crucial parameter for recovery process design. Almost all cobalt sorbed can also be desorbed with a solution of CaCI2. The bio-sorbent material can be used repeatedly in the sorption-desorption cobalt concentration process. IntroductionIt has been well documented that certain types of microbial biomass, living or non-living, possess a high potential to sequester and accumulate inorganic ions present in aqueous solutions. Metal concentration by microbial biomass from a solution is termed bio-sorption. This phenomenon is quite complex and includes adsorption of metals onto the surface of a microorganism and/or into the cellular structure in combination with ion-exchange, complexation, and/or micro-precipitation. Bio-sorption is generally considered to be a rapid physical/chemical process. The cell wall structure is porous and allows metal ions, as well as large organic nutrient molecules, to pass freely through. Polysaccharides of the cell wall could provide binding amino, carboxyl, phosphate and sulphate groups. In addition to these functional binding groups, polysaccharides often have ion-exchange properties. Sometimes, bivalent cations, such as Ca2+ or Mg2+, help the formation of ionic bond bridges between the negatively charged cell surfaces and positively charged cations in the solution, Proteins in the cell wall could offer functional groups and also offer peptide bonds to bind ions. Interactions between metal and the cell wall components are responsible for the sequestering of metals by way of bio-sorption. Many metals feature a complex solution chemistry and it is not always possible to determine what ionic species are actually present in the solution. The equilibria involved are dependent on pH, concentration, the anions present and other factors. The transport system for the ions are sometimes dependent on both temperature and energy. Biosorbent material could also be regenerated for multiple reuse."

"Pyroclastic rocks are useful guides to volcanic centers due to the tendency of their fragments to increase in size and volume toward the source vent. The felsic rocks of these centers can be the prime hosts of base metal deposits in the Precambrian Shield; their sub-volcanic equivalents are often the focus of porphyry copper mineralization in the Cordillera. Quantitative mapping of pyroclastic rocks has not yet developed into a routine prospecting tool in Canada, however, possibly due to the cumbersome nature of existing manual techniques and their limitation to structurally simple terrains.A rapid pyroclastic mapping method has been developed whereby the field geologist acquires only a down-plunge outcrop photograph, a record of the fragmental deformation ellipsoid and a record of some descriptive features from each station. Mean fragment size and volume percent are obtained later in the laboratory from a photo-enlargement: by means of a digital analyzer. A computer program uses the strain parameters to 'undeform' the field measurements and obtains genetic information from the descriptive data. Results can be superimposed on a geologic map, with values for each station being represented by a dot of a specified diameter corresponding to the size or volume percentile range to which the value belongs.Control traverses were run over the pyroclastic rocks surrounding the Anderson Lake mine and the Flin Flon South main shaft in northern Manitoba. In both locations, the mapping has delineated regular increasing trends in mean size and volume per cent toward the head frame."

"Full-scale sections of three different types of Grade 483 line pipe have been evaluated extensively. The variations in chemical composition, optical microstructure, tensile properties, hardness and Charpy impact toughness with specimen orientation and location were determined. Significant variations in several properties, notably Charpy shelf energy, impact transition temperature, inclusion content and ferrite grain size, were observed for different locations in the pipes. The results indicate that current specifications call for test samples for the most conservative locations, except for impact tests. Minimum Charpy impact values generally occur at the II2-width location, which may be a more appropriate specified test location than the present I/4-width location. The anisotropy of impact toughness, and the importance of low sulphur content and inclusion shape control for adequate toughness in the transverse/rolling-direction orientation were demonstrated. The orientation of impact specimens is critical for spiral-weld pipe, and the current specification test is non-conservative in that it can give results which are two to three times higher than the minimum value for the steel.IntroductionThis report presents the results of an extensive metallurgical evaluation of three different Grade 483 line-pipe steels. The sample material came from full-scale sections of line pipe, which represented current commercial practice at the time of manufacture (1975-1977). "The Kidd Creek copper smelter started operation in June 1981 using the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process. A steady increase in plant production rates has been demonstrated, and the annual tonnage of concentrate smelted is now double the original design rate. This paper summarizes recent modifications made to increase concentrate feed rates, increase on-line time, reduce copper losses and control the impurity level in anode copper. It includes improvements made to furnace design, improvements to reduce downtime f or boiler cleaning, and improvements made to the acid plant to allow handling of increased gas flowrates and higher gas strengths while maintaining low acid plant emission rates. IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Division of Fal conbridge Limited operates a base-metal mining and metallurgical complex, located in Timmins, Ontario, which includes an underground mine, a 13 500 tonne/day concentrator, a 130000 tonne/year zinc plant and a copper smelter and refinery, The copper smelter and refinery were commissioned in 1981, with an installed capacity of 59 000 tonnes/ year of cathode. The smelter, utilizing the continuous smelting technology of the Mitsubishi Process, has subsequently been expanded in production capacity, and in 1991 produced 113 500 tonnes of blister copper The capacity of the refinery, which uses Onahama No. 3 tankhouse technology, has been increased to 96 000 tonnes/year of cathode. The capacity increase at the smelter has been realized through the input of additional oxygen to both the smelting and converting furnaces, without increasing the process off-gas flowrate through the associated waste heat boilers.In this paper, a brief review of smelter operation and modifications in the period 1982 to 1987 is presented, together with a more detailed discussion of operation during 1988 to 1991, and a discussion of future planned improvements."

"Bricks made from local Paleozoic shales, and floor and wall tiles made from imported clays, both established record production volumes in 1985 and are the strongest segments of Ontario 's clay products industries. However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario's clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario' s clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom.Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain , art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. "As sulfide zinc ore deposits become exhausted, nonsulfide zinc ore deposits become the other resource for zinc production. However, flotation for zinc recovery from nonsulfide deposits is much more difficult than the flotation of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production only if a suitable processing technology is developed. In this regard, research efforts are being devoted to the flotation of nonsulfide zinc oxide minerals. Some common methods which have been used for the flotation of zinc oxide minerals include sulfidization-flotation, activation, and direct flotation with anionic and cationic collectors. The traditional flotation techniques have low efficiency and difficulty in separation and recovery of the zinc minerals from gangue minerals, for example, smithsonite (ZnCO3) from other carbonate gangue minerals and hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) from silicate gangue minerals. In this study potassium lauryl phosphate was evaluated as a collector for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals. Results from contact angle and microflotation experiments at pH 6–9 show that hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) can be floated from quartz and that smithsonite (ZnCO3) can be floated from calcite. However, when dodecylamine, which is a common collector reported in literature for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals, was used as collector, no significant difference between nonsulfide zinc minerals and gangue minerals was observed at any pH value. Initial evaluation suggests that potassium lauryl phosphate is effective at low concentration and may be a promising collector for zinc oxide mineral flotation.INTRODUCTIONBefore the twentieth century, zinc was mainly produced from nonsulfide ores (Large, 2001; Gilg, Boni, & Cook, 2008). With the development of differential flotation processes in the late 19th century major production switched from nonsulfide zinc sources to sulfide zinc ores (Hitzman, Reynolds, Sangster, Allen, & Carman, 2003; Gilg et al., 2008). However, as it is becoming more difficult to find new sulfide ores, recovery from nonsulfide deposits is being considered. Nonsulfide flotation for zinc recovery is much more difficult than the flotation recovery of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production if a suitable technology is developed. Zinc and lead oxide ores are difficult to beneficiate ores due to their similar floatability with gangue, high solubility in water, and the influence of slimes (Fa, Miller, Tao, & Li, 2005). "Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting offhand-sorted galena orefrom other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the foundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. Lead modernization will increase production capacity to a maximum of 160000 tonnes per year.IntroductionCopper-gold ore was discovered at Rossland, British Columbia, in the year 1890, starting a mining industry that was to last over three decade s. Selected ore was at first transported at high cost to distant U.S. smelters, so there naturally followed a decision to construct a small copper smelter to process the local ore to matte. It was built in 1896 at the mouth of Trail Creek on the Columbia River, about 10 km from Rossland. This little smelter was to develop and diversify in the next 90 years into the world's largest lead-zinc produce.The mining boom that occurred in the northwestern United States and southeastern British Columbia in the period of 1890 to 1910 saw the brief operation of many small local smelters. The only one to survive was the smelter at Trail. The circumstances that permitted its continued life and subsequent growth, form a fascinating history of business deals, litigation, and steady technical progress.Early investment in local railway transportation and options by F.A. Heinze, the smelter' s founder, attracted the attention of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which purchased Heinze' s assets in 1898. This provided the capital base for survival and growth of the smelter, which remained and prospered under the Canadian Pacific umbrella for almost ninety years. It was registered as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited in 1906; in 1966, this name was shortened to Cominco Ltd."

"The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and success- fully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop set points as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November, 1989, to the end of the mine 's operation in June, 1990, it was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.IntroductionExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. ES proponents make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, an ES should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988)detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."

"The use of a torque wrench to establish the amount of actual load developed on an expansion anchor bofting system dates back to work completed in the early 1950s. The advent of ultrasonic measurement systems and hydraulic torque wrenches has made it possible for the U.S. Bureau of Mines to perform torque-tension measurements in the laboratory and the field much more accurately. The results indicate that the amount of initial boft preload may be overestimated by amounts in excess of 45% of the expected load using torque wrenches. This inaccuracy is primarily due to the friction that occurs between the bearing plate and the head of the boft. These parameters become extremely important when the support system is being used to prevent joint members from slipping relative to each other or when the boft acts as a heavy spring to clamp two or more sections together. Methods to overcome the frictional losses are presented in conjunction with a laboratory method to determine the actual torque-tension ratios for expansion anchor and combination bolting systems.IntroductionMechanically anchored roof bolts have been widely used in the mining industry since their introduction in 1947. Estimates made in 1989 indicate that out of 85 million fixtures, approximately 49 million bolting fixtures still use applied tension to complete the reinforcement necessary to maintain stable openings. Nearly 85 million bolts are used yearly. The most widely used bolt is the resin-anchored headed rebar, followed by standard mechanical roof bolts, specialty bolts (mechanically anchored, resin enhanced fixtures) , and combination bolts . Po st-tensioned resin rebars, combination systems, and friction stabilizers make up the remaining 10% of the units used (Fig. I).For mechanical, combination, and tension rebar bolts, the bolt tension is the primary means of reinforcing the roof, but in many cases, because of poor installation procedures, the bolts are ineffective. Mine operators recognize the importance of proper installation procedures. Long-term bolt tension measurements are required in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)In each bolting cycle, the actual torque or tension of the first tensioned bolt installed with each drill head shall be measured immediately after it is installed. Thereafter, for each drill head used, at least one roof bolt out of every four installed shall be measured for actual torque or tension. If the actual torque or tension of any roof bolts measured is not within the range specified in the roof control plan, corrective action shall be taken."

"The potential benefits of measuring the volume of excavated open stope are enormous. By comparing the actual excavation of the orebody contour, it is possible to determine the “real"" amount of mining dilution, as well as the ore left in place. Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) has developed a stope survey system that allows for rapid and efficency measurement of underground excavation volumes. The system comprises a commercial laser (EDM), a set of lightweight rigid rods, an automated scanning device, a hand-held data logger and Autocad-based software for volume calculation and drawing manipulations. This system is an invaluable tool for the optimization of mining practices and could also be used for the delineation of caving areas. IntroductionDilution is the most common and devastating mine disease. In some instance s it could systematically cripple the profitability of an operation, and in more extreme cases, it could become a terminal disease. The Northern Miner Journal (1988) reported that many operations have closed because of uncontrolled dilution, before they even completed their first year of production. Other studies (Pakalnis, 1986) have shown that approximately 40% of all underground operations have more than 20% dilution. Considering that every ton of dilution costs in the neighbourhood of $25, the total direct cost of dilution to the Canadian mining industry may easily exceed one hundred million dollars per year.The dilution problem has been a major concern to Noranda Minerals for some time and in 1984 a comprehensive geomechanics research program was created at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. New empirical stope dimensioning techniques, improved cable bolting techniques and sophisticated ground control instrumentation projects (among others) contributed to improve the situation at Noranda.A new tool which can have a very significant impact on the ""war"" against dilution is being developed by the Noranda Technology Centre. The laser stope survey system allows for a rapid, precise and efficient measurement of underground excavation volumes. By comparing the excavation planned with the volume excavated, it becomes possible to determine the ""real"" amount of mining dilution as well as the amount of ore left in place. This system may also allow for early detection of a dilution problem. As with other diseases, early detection provides the best chance for a fast and total recovery."

"The Snow Lake massive sulphide deposits are hosted by Aphebian volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which in this area were deformed and metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies during the Hudsonian orogeny. All the known deposits occur in felsic rocks a short distance below the contact with an overlying mafic rock unit.The Stall Lake copper deposit occurs close to the top of an explosive felsic volcanic sequence. Rocks stratigraphically underlying the deposit have been hydrothermally altered by the mineralizing fluids. The sulphides were probably deposited from submarine volcanic vent(s) on the flanks of a felsic dome. The ore has been tightly folded, flattened and elongated parallel to the northerly trending lineation of the surrounding rocks during the several periods of deformation. Strike lengths of the lenses range from 60 to 300 feet and plunge-to-strike ratios are as much as 15:1.Ore lenses I to 4 typically consist of massive coarse-grained pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. A stratigraphically higher lens differs in that it contains fine-grained pyrite and chalcopyrite, with an increase in sphalerite toward its hanging wall. The No.4 orebody has a distinct footwall alteration zone characterized by brecciation and abundant chlorite-staurolite- garnet schist, with minor kyanite, anthophyllite, cordierite and anhydrite, as well as sulphide minerals. Chemically, the alteration zone is distinguished from the unaltered felsic rocks by Na20 depletion and Mg-Fe enrichment"

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. A brief review of the silver industry is presented to set the stage for the analysis of the distribution of silver production by source from various types of mines in Canada and of the changing relationship between the total output of silver and the total output of base metals. The decline in the average grade of the Canadian mines is also discussed and a trend for the future is proposed. The report then examines in broader aspects the world primary silver production and concludes, in the section on outlook, that the effective supply in primary silver will grow at a rate significantly lower than the growth rate expected for base metals. A cumulative deficit of some 900 million ounces is projected for the period 1975-1980 and a further deficit of some 1,100 million ounces if projected for the 1980-to-1985 period.

"IntroductionThe purpose o f this paper is to review the evidence at hand concerning the earliest centuries of cast iron in Europe, from roughly 1400 A.D. until the second half of the sixteenth century. For the most part it is concerned with the relationship between two technologies which emerged first in China and then later appear in Western lands, gunpowder weapons and iron founding. We should not assume, as I hope to show later in this discussion, that weapons constituted the only product for which the iron founder had any market, but it is clearly true that attempts to produce weapons constituted the most severe technical challenge for the early founder. Firearms appear for the first time in Europe in the 1320s and develop into significant weapons on the field of battle by the end of the century. Theirs is a complex history, subject neither to easy summary treatment nor to simplified models of development. I hope to be able, through the analysis of the evidence concerning cast iron, to show that one important strand in the fabric of gunpowder's history concerns the materials from which cannon could be made. This question is subject to a number of shades of meaning, because ""cannon"" can be made for many purposes under a profusion of different names, and under sharply varying conditions of use. As a result, the question of materials is frequently really a question of competing materials, and involves a complex set of factors, of which production costs and the ultimate safety of the user seem the most important. Judged in this manner cast iron was an important but unsatisfactory metal for weapons purposes until 1543, at which time English founders learned to make iron muzzle-loading cannon which could rival bronze ordinance in most important performance criteria, but which cost much less to produce. With that event, the history of cast iron and the history of weapons entered into the close relationship that persisted until the advent of rifled artillery made of steel in the middle of the nineteenth century."

"Force analysis on weakly-magnetic particles and non-magnetic particles in magnetic field are presented, using a kind of permanent magnetic drum magnetic separator, which is designed with strong specific magnetic force and open magnetic system. Its surface peak intensity reaches to 1.0T, and the distribution density of capture line is 1.25×103/dm2. Qualitative analysis on the particles including its magnetic property, particle size, motion speed, magnetic field intensity, etc. is also presented to calculate the separating parameters for the drum separator. Experiment was conducted for the separation of fine weakly magnetic minerals for example ilmenite. The practicability to separate the minerals using separator designed with open magnetic system has been proved, providing an economic way for efficient separation of micro-fine weakly magnetic minerals and upgrading of non-metallic minerals. INTRODUCTIONMagnetic separation is a mineral processing method based on the differences of magnetic properties between minerals in inhomogeneous magnetic field (Sun, 2007). Currently for separation of micro-disseminated weakly magnetic iron ore, electromagnetic high intensity magnetic separators with closed structure of magnet system are often used. And for the separation of strongly magnetic minerals such as magnetite, low intensity drum magnetic separators with open magnet system are often used. In order to lower the operation costs and improve energy efficiency, it is important to develop efficient high intensity permanent magnetic separator with open magnet system, to some extent replacing high intensity electromagnetic separator.Oberteuffer (1974) discussed the magnetic force and competing forces in magnetic separators which compete with the magnetic forces and act on all of the particles which travel through the separator are those of gravity, hydrodynamic drag, fraction, and inertia in magnetic separation."

Since 2009 Cobre las Cruces (CLC) has successfully operated a sustainable mining business near Seville, Spain, applying the most advanced hydrometallurgical technologies to process secondary copper sulphide ores through atmospheric leaching in ferric sulphate media and using oxygen sparging in a cascade of ten reactors. In comparison to conventional copper smelters, the CLC hydrometallurgical process does not generate SO2 gas, airborne emissions or slags. The copper ore is ground and sent directly to atmospheric leaching reactors; flotation is not required, and consequently, copper extraction is maximized at 93-95%, while producing 72,000 t/y copper cathodes of the highest purity (99.999 wt.% Cu, Grade A). Reserves for the CLC deposit were estimated at 16 million tonnes of ore averaging over 6 wt.% Cu and containing principally a chalcocite mineralization. Other copper bearing species include digenite, covellite, chalcopyrite, bornite and enargite. Pyrite represents over 70 wt.% of the ore. In the CLC leaching process, chalcocite reacts with ferric sulphate at approximately 90 ºC and copper is released into solution while ferric ions are reduced to ferrous ions. The ferric sulphate leachant is regenerated continuously by oxygen injection and consumes sulphuric acid. It is remarked that pyrite plays a crucial role to yield high copper leaching rates. When pyrite is oxidized, a small proportion of iron is co-leached and some sulphuric acid is generated. The CLC leaching technology has been designed to allow a certain level of pyrite oxidation, which is positive in many ways: (i) to maintain a Fe/Cu ratio in solution; (ii) to facilitate Fe(II) oxidation; (iii) to produce a high redox potential; and (iv) to counterbalance a bleed solution that removes some iron. Moreover, galvanic interaction between pyrite (cathode) and chalcocite (anode) can substantially increase atmospheric leaching kinetics and efficiency (copper recovery).

In this paper we examine, through pilot-scale testing, the possibility of operating a circuit comprised of two stages of HPGR comminution, followed by grinding through a horizontal stirred mill. In order to assess whether the novel circuit design could achieve the reduced energy requirements indicated in the literature, two more-established circuits, a cone crusher / ball mill and an HPGR / ball mill, were examined using a combination of testing and flowsheet simulation. The results showed that, based solely on the specific energy requirements for comminution, the HPGR / stirred mill circuit achieved a reduction of 9.2% and 16.7% over the HPGR / ball mill and cone crusher / ball mill circuits, respectively.
