"LOCATIONThe mine and mill are located in Lemoine township which is 20 miles directly south-east of the town of Chibougamau Quebec. Personnel live in Chibougamau and commute to the property over 33 miles of paved and gravel roads. Concentrates are trucked 13 miles to a railway siding on the line connecting Chibougamau and Quebec city.HISTORY Several companies explored the property before acquisition by Patino Mines (Quebec) Limited in 1973. Further exploration led to the discovery of a high grade copper-zinc orebody and the property was brought into production by the above company in 1976.ORE The ore contains 85% - 95% sulphides consisting of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor gold and silver. Argenti tetrahedrite, antimonial silver, native bismuth and galena are also pre sent in very minor quantities. Associated gangue minerals are quartz, carbonates and occasionally chlorite."

"This paper compares Canadian provincial mining safety regulations addressing hoist safety, automatic hoisting, and shaft obstruction. The regulations are quite similar among provinces, with only slight differences. Risk-mitigation strategies used in other industries are discussed, including their applicability to mine hoists. The specific case of software safety is introduced through examples. The mitigation of software failure is based on the use of the software lifecycle as recommended by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508 standard. Finally, ways to improve hoist safety are proposed.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article compare entre elles les diverses réglementations provinciales canadiennes concernant la sécurité des machines d'extraction, le levage automatisé et les obstructions dans les puits. Les réglementations sont assez semblables entre les provinces, mais elles comportent de légères différences. Les stratégies d’atténuation des risques utilisées dans d’autres industries sont abordées, incluant la possibilité de les appliquer aux treuils de mines. Le cas spécifique de sûreté des logiciels est abordé par des exemples. L’atténuation de la défaillance des logiciels est basée sur l’utilisation du cycle de vie du logiciel, comme cela est recommandé par la norme 61508 de la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI). Uranyl mineral dissolution appears to be complex, affected by factors such as solution pH and the presence of various cations in solution, and sometimes involving formation of secondary surface precipitates. Such secondary precipitates potentially could armor the underlying uranyl mineral surfaces from further dissolution. A detailed understanding on the formation of secondary precipitate is therefore essential for predictive modeling of radionuclide fate and transport in the subsurface. Several types of secondary precipitates on the surface of uranyl minerals were examined using Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and, Xray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

Reducing SAG Mill feed size has been a major trend in recent years. ‘Mine to mill’ strategies have reduced blasted-rock size, and in a growing number of operations reducing the primary crusher CSS and/or adding additional crushing upstream of the SAG mill have reduced rock feed size. While reducing feed size will increase SAG mill throughput, issues arise in terms of retaining charge in the mill, exposing the shell lining to impact damage, and maintaining milling performance should the pre-crush system shut down. This paper reviews the past experience on pre-crushing for SAG mills and provides an analysis of liner design (in particular grates and shell liners) for pre-crushed feed.

"Abstract - Where block (selective mining unit) grade distributions can be determined, the effect of average random errors of block grade estimates on metal recovery can be evaluated quantitatively. That is, for a given estimation error and cutoff grade, it is possible to calculate the quantity of metal that is lost as a result of misclassifying ore blocks as waste, as well as the dilution that ensues from misclassifying waste blocks as ore. Example calculations using a computer program GAINLOSS and realistic block grade distribution parameters for both a porphyry-type deposit and an epithermal gold deposit illustrate some fundamental relations that are important in quality control of estimation and in reconciliations concerning a comparison of ore estimates with production.Where the cutoff grade is on the lower tail of the grade distribution, metal arising from dilution can be much less than metal lost through misclassifying ore as waste. Hence, average grade of milled material could possibly be higher than expected (estimated) and tonnes milled will be smaller than estimated.Where the cutoff grade is on the higher tail of the grade distribution, tonnes arising from dilution will be greater than tonnes lost by misclassifying ore as waste. Thus, tonnage mined will be greater than estimated and the average grade milled will be less than estimated.The software GAINLOSS permits rapid comparison of the tonnes and average grade for all blocks selected as ore for a variety of levels of block estimation errors. These comparisons can be incorporated in a financial analysis to evaluate whether or not it is worthwhile to improve a high, average block estimation error to some lower value."

Reading the newspapers, you will know that opposition to ratification on economic grounds always points to the view that action will result in major price increases for energy (to both industry and households) with consequent severe losses of energy production and a loss of competitiveness for energy-intensive producers (i.e., in your kinds of industries). You might think of this as the ?carbon tax? fear, and you should note that many of the initial policy development experiments included variations of this theme. Analysis reported in late 2000 and into early 2002 reported reductions in energy production in the long run of between 10% and 20%. At the upper end of that view, these were the kinds of numbers reported in the Industry Canada study ?leaked? to the Press last week. The consequences of this approach included significantly uneven negative effects for some provinces (e.g., Alberta, but also Saskatchewan and Newfoundland). It had been agreed by the First Ministers of Canada, however, that the policy should not yield those results so development in recent months has focused on eliminating sector and therefore provincial ?sore thumbs?. Although an emissions trading system, which represents this type of approach and directly impacts costs of production, continues to be featured in the new or current policy and is applied to the Minerals Industries among others, it is designed to be implemented in such fashion that the costs are more moderate than before. And because the industries covered by permits are almost all price takers, there is no device for moving an increased price signal forward to ?consumers?. What this does do is even out negative effects among sectors in the economy and for provinces, but at the expense of government financial results.

"The Quemont mill is primarily a differential flotation plant in which copper, zinc ·and pyrite concentrates are recovered. Native gold and silver are associated in the form of very small particles with all the minerals contained in the ore: chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and even with the gangue rock.The proportion of the precious metals associated with chalcopyrite is such that the best recoveries we can obtain in our copper flotation concentrate are about 68 percent of the gold and 51 percent of the silver in the ore. In order to improve the total recoveries of precious metals it is necessary for us to float a pyrite concentrate and treat it by cyanidation for the extraction of whatever gold and silver we can obtain in this manner. In spite of the fact that we regrind this concentrate to 75 percent minus 325 mesh, it is difficult to extract much more than half of the gold and silver present in the pyrite concentrate by cyanidation, due to the extremely fine association of the precious metals with the pyrite.In 1963 we produced 86, 853 ounces of gold by flotation alone, and 14, 581 ounces by cyanidation. These amounts are equivalent to 67. 74 percent and 11. 37 percent respectively of the total gold in the mill heads. Comparable figures for silver are 325, 598 ounces by flotation and 99, 448 ounces by cyanidation; and 51.37 percent and 15.69 percent respectively.The total annual value of these metals (ie. $4, 000, 000) qualifies Quemont as a precious metal producer of some note. On the other hand, it is evident that by far the greater proportion of our gold and silver production is contained in copper flotation concentrates. When the income from our copper and zinc values is also considered, the much greater importance of flotation compared with cyanidation in our operation may be appreciated. This explains why most of our work on controls has been carried out in our flotation mill, rather than in our cyanide plant. Some of the controls installed there could, of course, be employed in either type of operation."

Cet article présente une compilation partielle des mesures adoptées pour la fermeture des haldes de stériles pour des mines situées au Canada et en Alaska, et dont le climat comporte des hivers froids. L?article présente également le processus de sélection qui a été suivi pour certaines de ces mines. Les exploitations minières produisent habituellement des quantités de stériles qui peuvent être importantes. De plus, la nature du dépôt minier ainsi que la roche mère vont souvent entraîner des impacts sur l'environnement. Ces impacts doivent être gérés non seulement durant les opérations minières, mais souvent à très long terme après la cessation de l?exploitation minière. Les plans de fermeture de mine doivent par conséquent procurer des solutions à très long terme, voire même à perpétuité dans bien des cas. Le processus de sélection implique souvent l'évaluation des risques liés aux responsabilités environnementales et financières. Il doit considérer l?aspect scientifique, comporter une définition des objectifs, tout en incorporant une gestion des ressources et des plans de travail. La planification de fermeture est essentiellement un exercice de prise de décisions comportant des contraintes. Une matrice de classement basée sur la performance et le risque est souvent développée durant ce procédé pour identifier les options préférées. Les études de cas présentées dans cet article présentent quelques exemples. L?état des connaissances sur le drainage acide minier provenant des haldes de stériles a augmenté considérablement au cours des dernières décennies. Ceci n?a pas nécessairement augmenté le niveau de complexité des méthodes adoptées pour la fermeture. Une approche qui est fréquemment utilisée consiste à stabiliser les pentes des haldes de stériles en abaissant la pente des talus pour ensuite recouvrir les stériles d?une couche de sol pour soutenir la végétation. De telles couvertures empêchent les animaux d?avoir un contact direct avec les stériles, minimisent l'érosion et réduisent l'infiltration à divers degrés. L'inclusion d?un traitement des eaux dépend évidemment de la qualité de l'eau au point de déchargement.

The Problem The Don deposit is a series of two sub-vertical zones that pose a number of challenges with respect to modeling and interpolation. The first challenge is that, based on data and observations, the mineralization and, more importantly, the grade is layered or banded and is stratigraphically controlled. The second challenge is that, due to the undulations of the deposit and extreme changes in dip, using a standard oriented ellipse to guide the estimation process is not appropriate and does not result in an estimate that is representative on a local scale. In order to solve this problem an adapted methodology of relative elevation modelling, has been devised to effectively model and estimate deposits faced with these challenges. Introduction Previous to 1924 the mining fields of Manitoba and adjoining territory had not been prospected in detail, and the reports of the exploration of the mineral discoveries to that date had been discouraging. As a result of the apparent failure of all the mining operations, some considered that geological conditions in the country westward from lake Superior extending across western Ontario, eastern and northern Manitoba, and northern Saskatchewan, were different from those in the northeastern part of Ontario, where large gold mines had been developed. Discoveries of importance thus were necessary to renew interest in the mining possibilities of this part of the Canadian Shield, and the successful operations at Flin Flon and Howey in large part were responsible for the beginning of the present activity in what may be described as the part of the pre-Cambrian Shield within central Canada. In Manitoba, the more important developments at present are in the Central Manitoba, Gods Lake, and Knee Lake fields. The large area from west of Flin Flon east to Herb Lake, also, is being explored carefully for gold deposits of merit. A number of properties in Red Lake, Woman Lake, and Pickle Crow areas are being drilled and explored underground. Many of the mines of the Lake of the Woods area, that were producing gold 30 years ago, are re-opened, and new prospects in this field and in the country to the east are being explored. The recent development of Little Long Lac mine in an area near the railway, and considered by some to have been thoroughly prospected years ago, has stimulated interest in the areas formerly prospected. In the autumn of 1934, the belts of greenstone and sediments in the country east of lake Nipigon were staked, and deposits in these fields will be explored in detail this year. This paper is presented to discuss the general features of the geology and gold deposits of the various prospecting fields in Manitoba and adjoining territory. Details of a number of the areas and mines will be presented at this meeting in papers by Barton on Little Long Lac, Tanton on Sturgeon River, Baker on Gods Lake, and Brownell and Kinkel on Flin Flon. Although mining was not active in most of this territory previous to 1930, geologists of the various government departments continued field studies and interesting reports were issued.

Environmental issues have evolved considerably over the last two decades. The main contributing factors, to name a few, have been the changing values of our modern societies, the globalization of trade and its linkage to environment, evolution and accessibility of information/communication technologies, better educated populations, climate change, long range transport of toxics and the increasing influence of NGOs and multistakeholders. As well, environmental management of mining operations had to be realigned in order to meet these new realities and to respond to more elaborated regulations oriented towards sustainability. Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) have emerged and have been introduced to meet not only the assurance of conformance to regulations but also to prevent pollution and to apply the continuous improvement of mining processes. EMS models have been developed and certification to international standards (e.g. ISO-14 001) is a common practice. Globalization has imposed challenges and additional requirements to environmental management. Developing a mine in emerging countries implies dealing with international agencies, local communities and a variety of government infrastructures to obtain a ?licence to operate?. This paper presents the structure of our EMS and how we have adapted its implementation to our operations in South America.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) on Just-In-Time (JIT) material delivery, with a focus on how the use of BIM can help improve efficient implementation of JIT and reduce the cost of material management. Previous research and a number of case studies have addressed the positive impact of BIM on construction at large but none focused on JIT in construction. This paper presents a methodology for selecting reliable material vendors. It also utilises the integration of BIM and scheduling software to generate quantities of material and its required delivery time to improve the flow process and improve its reliability to minimise related delays and productivity losses arising from idle and non-productive time of equipment and labour on jobsites. 4D visualization is utilized to support coordination and timing of JIT material deliveries in an effort to minimize congestion on job sites. Case studies on JIT material deliveries are presented and the impact of BIM implementation on reducing the cost of material management is evaluated. The joint effect of BIM and JIT on quality control, elimination of waste, reduction of inventory buffers, and on relationships with material vendors are evaluated by analysing and comparing data from case studies. The paper also presents a methodology based on multi-attribute decision criteria for modelling the selection criteria for material vendors. The model can assist in ranking vendors not only based on cost and quality but also on their reliability in delivering material on time.

Direct methanol fuel cells have been the subject of considerable research in the last decade. Performance levels realized in cells, stacks, and systems show that this technology is a promising power source for a wide range of portable applications. A direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) operates directly on a methanol fuel stream typically supplied as a methanol/water vapour or as an aqueous methanol solution in liquid feed DMFCs. The fuel streams in DMFCs are usually recirculated in order to remove carbon dioxide and to re-use the diluent and any unreacted fuel in the depleted fuel stream exiting the DMFC. The concentration of methanol in the fuel circulation loop is an important operating parameter because it determines the electrical performance and efficiency of the direct methanol fuel cell system. The methanol concentration in the circulating fuel stream is usually measured continuously with a suitable sensor, and fresh methanol is admitted in accordance with the signal from the sensor. There are many factors to consider in developing a methanol sensor suitable for DMFCs. These factors include sensitivity, cost, size, simplicity, reliability, longevity, concentration range, and dynamic response. In particular, reliability and low cost should be addressed. Methanol concentration sensors measure methanol concentration by means of detecting the variations of physical/chemical properties of the solution. In this work, methanol concentration sensors based on electrochemistry, electric-capacitance measurement, infrared sensing, ultrasound sensing, and other techniques are reviewed to discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

MR. C. R. WHITTEMORE: It is interesting to note that the mining industry is making increased use of alloy steels for drilling. They will undoubtedly lead to greater footage at lesser cost. Mr. Kemsley states that, for use in hard ground, the shanks are brought to a hardness of 435 to 440 Brinell by heating them to approximately l,800°F. It seems to me that this temperature is excessively high-it is considerably above the critical point of the steel. The only effect of such a high temperature is to lessen considerably the impact resistance of the steel. The possibilities of an oil quench, followed by a tempering draw which does not lessen the hardness of the steel too much but increases its toughness, might well repay further study; also the temperature control, a factor which depends on the composition of the steel. However, service results are undoubtedly the best criterion of practice. MR. KEMSLEY: I would like to point out that the steel is not quenched at 1,800°F. After heating to this temperature, it is laid aside to cool gradually; this high temperature is necessary to produce the required hardness by simple normalizing-cooling in still air. We all know that ideal conditions for hardening steel demand salt baths and furnaces with automatic temperature control, but for most companies the cost of such equipment having sufficient output capacity is prohibitive. The end we are trying to attain is to make good drills at a cost that will be within the means of any mine.

Sulphide is an effective reagent in the precipitation of base metals for both metal winning and environmental control. BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc. has successfully demonstrated in industrial plants that biogenic sulphide reagent can be generated cost effectively and used to win metals such as copper, zinc and nickel from low-grade leach solutions and wastewater. Commercial plants in which sulphide reagent is used to produce high quality treated effluents for discharge directly to the environment are also in operation. Operations utilizing biogenic sulphide reagent for copper recovery from acid drainage and low grade leach solutions are discussed, including those at Bisbee, Arizona, commissioned in 2004 and at the Dexing mine in China, scheduled for commissioning in 2007. In addition, a new application of BioteQ's technology for the recovery of copper from gold-cyanide solutions, and the regeneration of cyanide, utilizing biogenic sulphide in place of chemical sulphide reagents in the SART process is described.

Analytical methods for the determination of uranium and other precious elements in ores, industrial wastes and by-products have been developed. The analytical techniques employed are NAA and ICP-MS. Two procedures of digestion were applied: microwave acid digestion and alkali fusion. Accuracy was checked by using CRMs. Results of analysis of the same samples by the elaborated methods have been presented and compared. The methods will be used for estimating the capacity of uranium production for the Polish nuclear power programme.

Fouling of activated carbon by different organic species is a great concern in carbon in pulp and carbon in leach circuits. The rate of gold adsorption onto activated carbon from synthetic gold solutions which contained different amounts of potassium ethyl xanthate (PEX), potassium isobutyl xanthate (PIBX), and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were evaluated through batch adsorption tests. The results of these experiments showed that the gold sorption rate rapidly decreases by increasing the concentration of collectors including PIBX and PEX up to 20 mg/L and at higher concentrations, the kinetic rate constant (i.e., k value) gradually leveled off to 53 h-1 for PIBX, which is 46% lower than the 99 h-1 for PEX. At low concentrations of up to 15 mg/L of MIBC, a gradual decrease of the rate constant was observed, while at higher concentrations, the decrease was found to be more pronounced. The gold loading capacity and the rate of gold adsorption onto activated carbon from a gold cyanidation pulp in the presence of flotation reagents were also evaluated. The results of these experiments showed that the flotation reagents have no significant effect on the gold loading capacity of activated carbon at prolong adsorption period, meanwhile the rate of gold adsorption continuously decreases by increasing the concentration of flotation reagents in the leaching solution.

"IntroductionSafety and training in the mineral industry will always be issues that are hotly debated and discussed.The nature of the mining industry, where people and equipment work in close quarters deep below the earth's surface, attracts a great deal of public attention and concern, especially in the areas of safety and related training activities. This concern has been carried over into the mineral processingsector which is, of course, a vital part of the mining industry.It is therefore imperative that mining people closely examine the policies, procedures and programs presently in place to determine if they meet the needs of the industry and its employees. Everyone stands to benefit: the companies, employees and the mineral industry as an important segment of the Canadian economy.Phrases such as ""Safety First"", ""Safety is Number One"", have a role to play in industrial safety programs but in reality are a shallow approach to the magnitude of the challenge. An industry must produce its products in a cost-effective way, with good employee relations. None of these objectives can be successfully achieved unless accompanied by good safety performance. Accidents both on and off the job result in very poor efficiency, high costs and poor employee relations.This chapter, Safety and Training, outlines those major areas that the author believes are necessary components for an industrial safety, health and training program, but are not all inclusive. More will surely be added as additional problem areas requiring attention are identified. The major sections discussed are: Development and Implementation of a Safety Program; Occupational Health; Training; and Audit Procedures.The author has drawn on his experience as both a mill superintendent, mine manager and superintendent of safety, health and training. The approach developed at loco Metals Manitoba Division is frequently used in this paper with examples and excerpts to better illustrate the subject, but does not represent the full scope of programs in place in the Division."
