The northern Izu-Ogasawara Arc is characterized by an abundant distribution of submarine calderas along the volcanic front to the back-arc rift zones. In many of these calderas hydrothermal activities are observed. Among these calderas, hydrothermal ore deposits with economically feasible quality and amounts are hosted at two calderas, the Myojin Knoll Caldera and Beyonnaise Knoll Caldera. We conducted two research cruises in 2005 and 2006 to investigate further hydrothermal activities and ore deposits in these calderas and to complete the geological and geophysical mapping in the area. We discovered a strong signature of hydrothermal activity in the Myojin-sho Caldera using AUV capabilities. Newly obtained geological and geophysical data clarified the relationship between back-arc rifting tectonics and hydrothermal activities in the area. Five calderas (two of them newly found) and numerous (>200) volcanoes are mapped in the area. Complete SeaBeam coverage showed a distinct feature of the back-arc rifting activity and its relationship to the submarine calderas on the volcanic front. The back-arc rift zones composed of four segments separated by E-W trending volcanic ridges. Three of the calderas are located in the rift zone and are heavily deformed by the rift normal faulting that typically trend NNW-SSE. As the Beyonnaise Caldera is located in a swarm of faulting zones at the eastern end of the back-arc rift, the formation of the hydrothermal ore deposits found in the Beyonnaise Caldera are apparently affected by these faulting activities. Newly found submarine calderas are located in the rifting zone and are heavily faulted.

The increased interest on deep water minerals resources is a challenge for both mining and oil industry. The exploration and production of oceans minerals require a synergy between of different technologies. While mining industry is leading the dredging and processing part of the system, oil industry is contributing through development of ore lifting technology based on existing subsea knowledge. The paper presents an overview, based on published projects around the world, of different approaches to marine mining. Several exploration techniques and offshore production systems were already designed and assessed, all of them with apparently positive results. Exploration phase is well advanced and in continuous expansion allowing the discovery of increasing resources around the world of different nature but production can be considered to be in an early stage. Different from onshore mining, subsea operations require a closer cooperation with international and local authorities to preserve as much as possible the environment. There are still many uncertainties at respect and all the exploration process must be carefully evaluated to allow subsea mining to develop in a sustainable manner. Technically, mining at seabed was already demonstrated and the process is based on three main components, namely seafloor mining tools, riser and lifting system and production vessel support. This layout is based on the concept that ore must be disaggregated at seafloor first, transported to surface in form of slurry that must be dewatered before loading to be transported to processing plants onshore. The challenges are rising because the environment and safety must be taken into consideration as a priority when evaluating the efficiency of the system. A geologist can be likened to a medical pathologist trying to figure out from faint clues how something had lived and how it died, often long after the event. Present-day seafloor hydrothermalism has empowered geologists/pathologists to dissect a living system, in this case volcanogenic massive sulfides (vms) deposits of copper, zinc, lead, silver and gold. On the other hand, a considerable amount of our understanding of seafloor hydrothermal processes and its products stem from our knowledge, much of it from industry, of these same processes and products that formed ancient ores in oceans as much as 2700 million years ago and are now mined on land.

The most exciting frontier in Ocean Technology is represented by a new class of Marine Bioproducts, the source of which lies in marine microorganisms. The microorganisms include microalgae, bacteria and archaea. These organisms represent very diverse, adaptive life forms and in their metabolic processes use carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, ultraviolet blockers, as well as a wide range of enzymes that are pivotal in the production of new pharmaceuticals and nutraceutical products. These organisms cover a wide spectrum of ocean environments, from the shallow to the deep, from the normal to the extreme. The technological challenge is in the identification of candidate organisms, in the screening for valuable enzymes, and in the industrial production. A whole new range of collecting strategies involving submersibles, ROVs and in situ ocean floor instrumentation is emerging. New non-polluting industrial chemical processes involving the use of photobioreactors and extremophile bioreactors for breeding and monitoring these organisms in neo-farming technology is emerging. The commercial value of these candidate products is immense, as is the range of potential organisms. The dimension of this new industry is global. The Marine Bioproducts Engineering Center (MarBEC), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has been established at the University of Hawaii. The vision of MarBEC is to develop a seamless research system stretching from undergraduate education to industry for the purposes of producing valuable marine bioproducts outside of the normal chemical factory production. MarBEC is uniquely and strategically placed in the Pacific to explore, find, and adapt highly bioactive marine micro-organisms found in the tropical ocean. Massive sulfides discovered in 1991 and further explored in 1993 in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, north of Papua New Guinea, represent one of the few modem seafloor occurrences known to he associated solely with highly siliceous volcanic rocks. As such they are very close analogs of ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) ore deposits, and hence an excellent natural laboratory for developing new approaches for land-based VMS exploration. The Manus Basin lies between the active New Britain subduction zone and volcanic arc to its south and the opposed inactive Manus subduction trench to its north. It is being extended in a complex pattern of short neovolcanic zones and oblique transform faults. In its western sector, relatively mature back-arc spreading has created predominantly basaltic segments with characteristics and mineralization generally similar to those of mid- ocean ridges. At its far east, however, the basin is distinctly immature. The East Manus Volcanic Zone lies between two members of the Manus transform set, and is an en-echelon series of neovolcanic edifices constructed on extensionally thinned island arc crust formed during the earlier manus subduction episode. Individual edifices range from predominantly basaltic to predominantly dacitic in composition. Two of the edifices are known to be hydrothermally active, and a particulate plume with unknown source occurs in the seawater column above a third.

A number of Articles contained in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea III (UNCLOS) bear directly on legal issues related to the recovery of mineral deposits on the ocean floor. Mineral resources of the continental margin other than oil, gas and hydrates include, sand, gravel, shell, coral, gemstones and phosphorite. Jurisdiction over the exploration and exploitation of these deposits is determined either by the Territorial Sea claims of a coastal state or their recognized sovereign rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). At least 33 coastal states have the right under Article 76 (Continental Shelf regime) to claim seabed jurisdiction beyond 200 nautical miles (EEZ limit). In addition, several states have "Pioneer Investor" status with regard to seabed resources in international waters (The Area). A global maritime boundary database (GMBD) has been developed as a basic resource identifying the current claims of coastal states. It provides detailed information on existing boundaries and limits determined by the UNCLOS accords or by multi-lateral agreements which affect mineral exploration and exploitation. This paper will describe the GMBD and its construction and maintenance.

The UNEP Shelf Programme (USP) is the access point for a collaboration of international organizations with expertise in marine geoscience and maritime law. It was established in response to a United Nations resolution, stating that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), working through the Global Resource Information Database (GRID) system, should work in conjunction with Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and the International Hydrographic Organization, to assist coastal States, and in particular developing States and small island developing States (SIDS) with submissions to establish the outer limits of their continental shelf under Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The beach at the resort city of Virginia Beach, Virginia has been and increasingly will be dependent upon artificial nourishment for maintenance and for hurricane protection. Both existing base-level maintenance operations and planned substantial enhancement programs out strip the capabilities of traditional terrestrial resources to provide the required quantities of sand. Our research program, an amalgam of projects from several funding sources, has located and defined suitable quantities of beach quality sand for use on the city's beaches. The work also has furthered our understanding of the region's Quaternary history. Initially, reconnaissance level, high-resolution, sub-bottom profiles and surficial grab samples taken on the basis of sub- marine geomorphology identified two geographically and geologically separate areas worthy of further exploration. Further profiling supplemented with some cores further defined the potential sand reserves. The Sandbridge Shoal site is a large and discrete Holocene sandbody atop late Pleistocene strata. The sands in region offshore of the commercial area known as the Resort Strip appear to be recent fill within fluvial(?) channels cut into the older subsurface. Each of these resources is within roughly 5 km of major sites targeted for beach nourishment and/or hurricane protection and contains sand with appropriate geotechnical properties. Ongoing work will better define the dimensions and limits of the sand bodies and provide data to enable determinations to be made concerning exploitation. Ultimately decisions concerning the overall beach enhancement-hurricane protection projects will involve economic, environmental, technical, and social considerations.

Recent advances in coring technology and in the development of shipboard and/or in situ geochemical geochemical analysis systems have greatly improved our ability to collect and analyze exploration samples, particularly for marine placer exploration programs. The potential benefit of these improvements cannot be fully realized, however, until we also develop more efficient methods of data reduction and interpretation. Specifically, there is a need to provide prospectors with rapid and useful interpretations of the raw geochemical data so that they can exploit promising results and otherwise optimize the exploration program while the exploration vessel is still at sea. The goal of this project has been to identify and/or develop computer software which is capable of making the necessary data reduction calculations and which can be run on conventional desk-top computers. All work on this project has been supported through a research grant from MMTC-CSD to The University of Michigan. The first stage of this effort involved an evaluation of commercially available (i.e., "off the shelf") software to determine its suitability for use in marine placer exploration applications. Various commercial software packages, each purportedly capable of making different types of statistical and/or mathematical calculations, were tested by evaluating their performance in handling geochemical data sets representative of actual marine placer locations. These data sets include the positions and results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected marine placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Surface processing vessels for deep-sea nodule mining operations will produce dewatering plumes that will be released at some depth into the ocean water column. We are studying all aspects of this part of the nodule mining process. First, we have developed analytical and numerical models to determine the effects of highly non-uniform, realistic stratifications on forced, compressible plumes with finite initial size. The classical plume model is developed to take into account the effects of compressibility and thermal conduction through the dewatering pipe. Our results show how small-scale features of a realistic stratification can have a large effect on a plume, and provide a basis for determining at what depth dewatering plumes can be released. These results form the basis for our PLUMEX field experiments, in which we will study the dynamics of dewatering plumes over the course of one week of field tests from the vessel R/V Sally Ride. The field experiments will use a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and a Phased-Array Doppler Sonar (PADS) system to study the characteristics of the dewatering plumes. The subsequent transport of the material in the dewatering plume will be monitored via shipboard surveys and, potentially, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) operations, and these studies will be integrated with near real-time, data assimilating numerical model predictions. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a field validated, recommend strategy for the release and monitoring of dewatering plumes, to help inform the development of ISA regulations and the planning of industrial operations.

The recovery of most minerals, which are amenable to gravity concentration, is standardly determined by accurate sampling and assaying. .With respect to particulate - gold ores, sampling and assaying are still the convention, but the accuracy and reproducibility of these operations are much discussed and debated points. Evaluation of gravity concentrators by conventional sampling and assaying techniques is very time consuming, costly and may introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the results due to the particulate nature of placer gold. These problems are not unique to placer gold ores and apply to any low grade ore with particulate values. A gravity concentrator evaluation process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (198Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator's product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems. Beginning in 1984, MIRL conducted radiotracer studies of unit processes, which included jigging, static wedge wire screening, elutriation, and concentration with compound water cyclones.

The Manus back-arc basin behind the New Britain Trench is one of the major sites of active seafloor hydrothermal vent-fields which are considered to be modern-day analogue of felsic volcanic-hosted polymetallic massive sulfide deposits abundant in ancient geological record. Many of these deposits represent multi-million dollar resources, and yet very little are known about the fundamental processes leading to their formation. In November 2000 January 2001, the PACMANUS hydrothermal system in this region will be targeted by the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 to investigate the internal anatomy. A number of observations that suggest that the tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal processes in the eastern Manus basin spreading center are unusual in that they can not be explained by a simple back-arc opening due to subduction of the New Britain Trench. Geochemistry of submarine volcanoes in the eastern Manus basin, for instance, shows affinity to arc rather than back-arc type volcanoes. Yet these submarine volcanoes lie too faraway from the Benioff-Wadati zone. One hypothesis is that the magmatic and subsequent hydrothermal activity of this region is a direct result of the irregularities in the deep crust and upper mantle structure and that the tectonic process is controlled by the sharp inflection of the New Britain Trench. According to this hypothesis, the two major southeast-trending strike-slip faults in the eastern Manus Basin, Djaul and Weitin Faults, should extend farther down and join to the New Britain Trench. They would form a transform arm of the triple junction with the New Britain Trench southeast of New Britain Island and southwest of Bougainville Island forming the other two arms. A trench-trench-transform triple junction can not be stable over time, and therefore a slight change in the plate velocity may lead to a dramatic change in the configuration of the plate boundaries. If so, the instability of the triple junction may cause large tectonic deformations, such as mantle uplift under the Manus basin due to mantle rupturing by transform faults, and therefore may explain the arc-style volcanism and unusual compositions of hydrothermal deposits in the eastern Manus basin.

Seafloor massive sulfides have been a subject of interest for profitable commercial mining these ten years. Because of the higher Au, Ag, and Cu contents, they have received much attention as immediate commercial mining targets by private companies and nations. Some of them already proposed the technologies necessary for the commercial mining. However, the technologies for survey, excavation, lifting, and ore dressing have not yet well been examined from viewpoint of the economy. In this presentation, the authors present some key factors and improvements for better economy in the mining.

The importance of cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts for possible future rare metal sources has currently been recognized. The thin layer-type deposit characteristics affect not only the excavation efficiency but also the economy of mining venture. Considering the thin layer-type distribution and the utilization of some rare metals in cobalt-rich manganese crusts, a preliminary economic feasibility of the mining venture is evaluated. Under some preliminary technical assumptions, the possibility of cobalt-rich manganese crusts for future rare metal sources for Japan is examined. The important role of utilization of rare metals in the crusts is highlighted.

After verification of methodology and testing of prototype systems during 2005/06, Nautilus Minerals expanded their Papua New Guinea (PNG) operations to a full commercial exploration program in 2007. Included was the deployment of sensors and survey systems to locate, characterize and verify massive sulfide deposits with potential as mine sites within the tenements held by Nautilus in PNG. This presentation discusses some of the gear developed and operated during the 2007 PNG investigation.

One of the numerous challenge for underwater mining is the positioning. This paper describes an architecture for the integration of an Ultra Short BaseLine (USBL), an Acoustic Synthetic BaseLine (ASBL) operating in Sparse Array mode and a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) closely coupled with an Inertial Navigation System (INS) for precise subsea positioning in severe environments. By using such architectures, the INS can help to reduce the noise on the measurements coming from acoustic sensors. Another advantage is the capability to reduce the number of required transponders on the seabed, and as a consequence, reduce the time for the deployment and calibration of each transponder. The paper further describes sea-trials performed to assess the ability of a complete positioning system to provide decimetric positioning precision even with a single beacon deployed in the navigation area.
