According to the unique properties and many applications of nano silver powder, it was prepared from acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold and silver ions were occurred with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (Fe2+, Cu 2+and Zn2+) in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran. Preparation of nano silver particles was achieved in two steps: first, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second by using different reagents as precipitation and extraction steps. Different controlled parameters were including pH, residence time and temperature, mixing time, and reducing reagents to metals molar ratio. Acid leaching process was carried out with sulphuric and nitric acid via suitable reductants. In order to remove copper, zinc, and silver ions from solution, all of the conditions were controlled. The optimum conditions for preparation of nano silver powder with less than 90 nm were pH 10.5, hydrazine/methanol to silver molar ratio of 3 to 4, and reduction time of 5 min in 45 °C. The results were evaluated via SEM, A.A and UV- Vis spectroscopy analytical methods.

Water has become a scarce resource in quality. Companies in the ornamental stones sector use water intensively in their processes. Given the current situation, it is imperative to rationalize this feature that at first is related to the reduction of consumption, through no waste. Considering the importance of environmental preservation of this resource and also to comply with the legislation that governs the procedure for processing of ornamental stones, new alternatives should be available for the maintenance of current activities and promoting the development / growth of the sector on the principles of environmental sustainability and economic in future scenarios. The ornamental stones processing industries, especially for micro and small enterprises, require the implementation of a management program that optimizes the use of this feature, since the techniques individually processed operate with three basic processes dependent on water use: split blocks, polishing and finishing slabs. This technology requires a large volume of water resources and control measures involving operating recirculation water can minimize power consumption, making the company more profitable and sustainable. This is a survey of literature, associated with technical reports provided by partner companies and government agencies. This study aimed to the organization and provision of theoretical knowledge about the subject matter coupled with management practices, which may be reproduced or re-purposed in ornamental stones processing companies. It should be noted that the industry in question is lacking in technical expertise for the implementation of sustainable attitudes relevant to water reuse.

Oxidised lead-bearing ores of one of the deposits of Russian Federation represent complex raw materials. Its main components are lead (3.2%~4.7%), silver (100~300 g/t) and zinc (0.7%~0.8%). The sample is characterized as oxidized ore. Silicium (37.4%) and iron (33.2%) are its main com-ponents and present in oxide form. Lead presents as cerussite, anglesite and plumbojarosite have a subject role. Zinc occurs as smithsonite. Certain part of zinc is associated with manganese minerals (psylomelane-pyrolusite). Close association of valuables with manganese-iron mineralization is ob-served. Silver is present in native finely dispersed form. Three options of flowsheets have been developed to recover valuables from the ore. 1. Hydrometallurgical flowsheet of lead and silver recovery on the basis of chloride leaching. 2. Flotation. 3. Flotation -flotation tailings cyanidation. Hydrometallurgical flowsheet of ore processing on the basis of chloride leaching (option I) al-lows to achieve recovery into saleable products of 68.8% Pb and 70.2% Ag. High quality lead concentrate with 71.7% lead and 700 g/t silver was obtained during flotation (option 2). Flotation tailings cyanidation (option 3) provides 24% silver additional recovery (from the ore). Technical and economical evaluation demonstrated that ore flotation (option 2) and flotation with subsequent flotation tailings cyanidation (option 3) are the most cost-efficient. Option II is the most cost-efficient variant of 1 tonne of ore processing (9.05 US dollars).

"The Talnakh Concentrator was put into operation in 1981 using a direct selective process to produce copper, nickel and pyrrhotite concentrates.In 2001, a novel selective-bulk-selective (SBS) technology for the concentration of massive sulfide ore was implemented, that allowed to increase the valuable components recovery into target concentrates with feedstock grinding coarser than before. In 2003-2005, the process upgrading included the differentiated processing of nickelpyrrhotite products recovered at the different concentration stages and made it possible to significantly enhance the contrast of the pentlandite and pyrrhotite flotation properties and to simultaneously increase separation of polymineral intergrowths.The next stage of the PD concentration complex development is the Project ""Talnakh Concentrator Reconstruction and Technical Upgrading"" to raise its capacity by half. The project has three Phases.• Phase 1. Pilot startup was carried out in January 2015 following the installation of new OK-100 TC flotation machines, manufactured by Outotec.• Phase 2. The introduction of a new technology developed by the Polar Division specialists launched in mid-2016. The new technology is based on maximization of iron and sulfur removal into tailings and maintenance of non-ferrous and precious metals losses at the same level.After the realization of Phase 3, the annual capacity of the Talnakh Concentrator will raise by another ~ 40% at the expense of processing cuprous and disseminated ores currently being processed by the Norilsk Concentrator.By 2023, due to upgrading of the PD production facilities the emissions to the atmosphere will reduce by 75%.Polar Division of PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel (PD) searches for the ways to solve its environmental issues. Thus, in 2016, the Nickel Plant was shutdown and a new flowsheet was introduced at Talnakh Concentrator. It resulted in the reduction of sulfur specific amount sent to pyrometallurgical processing as a component of the concentrates.The Talnakh Concentrator was put into operation in 1981 using a direct selective process to produce copper, nickel and pyrrhotite concentrates.In 1981, its design capacity for processing of Cu-Ni ores from Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky Mines did not exceed 3 million tons per year.In 2001, a novel selective-bulk-selective (SBS) technology for the concentration of massive sulfide ore was implemented at the Talnakh Concentrator, that allowed to increase the valuable components recovery into target concentrates with feedstock grinding coarser than before."

The worldwide implementation of corrosion protection of low alloyed automotive metal sheets by zinc coating has led to supply shortages of zinc free non-alloyed steel scrap in the foundry industry. In a collaboration project, partly financed by the German government, with partners from the automotive industry, zinc metallurgy, scrap trading, foundry industry, and plant construction, a new acid-based pre-dezincification process has been developed, and a pilot plant with throughput of about 100 t/d has been put into operation at the Clausthal Umwelt-Institut GmbH (CUTEC) together with the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. During the treatment process, acid from a zinc metallurgical plant will be supplied, which can be recycled to the primary zinc extraction process after raising the zinc concentration to more than 130 g/L zinc. This way, the separation of small amounts of iron by precipitation and the electrolytic zinc winning are outsourced and, as a result, the pre-dezincification process runs waste-free. In Germany, the amount of zinc coated ?new scrap? is approx. 3 million t per year with a zinc content of approximately 60,000 t per year. The possible additional incomes for the dezincified steel scrap are in the order of ?40 to ?50 per ton of scrap, the gained zinc content during the acid dezincification defrays the costs of the process, if the throughput is more than 700 t/d. In comparison to conventional dezincification during the electro arc furnace process followed by upgrading in a rotary kiln (Waelz process), the acid dezincification process running at a maximum of 50°C will cut the energy costs by up to 74% and the CO2 emission by up to 88%. In fact, a demonstration plant is being designed right now and will be installed for processing a part of the zinc coated metal scrap from the Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, Germany. "Tumbling mills are machine, operating in non-equilibrium, capable of applying forces on the ore contained within, causing the ore to break down. The action of the mill on the ore is very inefficient, producing a large quantity of heat. The inefficiencies of the mill drive the desire for improvement, spawning research and development activities. Given the non-equilibrium nature of the mill, the theory of Large Deviations is proposed as the framework that captures the state of the mill. The theory of Large Deviations allows for the determination of the rate function and the scaled cumulant generating function (SCGF), for systems in either equilibrium or non-equilibrium. Powerful connections can been made between familiar concepts of statistical physics and the concepts introduced by the theory of Large Deviations: entropy can be associated with the rate function; the scaled cumulant generating function with the free energy. It is shown that observables, compatible with Large Deviation theory, can be identified for the tumbling mill. Here, the time series of the energy associated with an element of the charge is such an observable. Furthermore, using some experimental data, it is shown that the time series of the energy can define a rate function, thereby describing the system within the Large Deviation framework. Finally, a discussion of the results is given, particularly how this theory can be further developed for tumbling mills."

At the pelletizing plant of the Gol-E-Gohar mining and industrial company two parallel dry closed grinding circuits, each with the average throughput of 300 t/h, are used. Each grinding circuit consists of a burner, a dry ball mill (6.2 m×13 m) and an air separator. The ball mill consists of a 2 m-long drying and an 11 m-long grinding chambers. The iron ore concentrate is fed to the drying chamber by a feed chute. The first 1.35 m of the drying chamber consists of 56 flights in two rows to decrease the feed moisture from 5% to below 0.2% and the rest of dryer chamber consists of deflectors to pass the material to the grinding chamber. It was found that when the feed moisture content increased from 1.3% to 3.5%, the throughput decreased by 12% (35 t/h) indicating a low performance of the dryer. Monitoring the wear rate of flights for a period of 12 months showed that the first 0.8 m length of the flights length did not experience any wear. This means that about 59% of flights do not contribute in material distribution and drying. A DEM simulation of feed chute and the drying chamber demonstrated that due to the inappropriate design of feed chute most of materials do not get in touch with the first 0.8 m length of the drying chamber. To overcome this problem, various feed chute designs with different geometries were simulated by the KMPCDEM© software. With the aim of arriving at a proper material trajectory, where the total length of the flights are used, a new feed chute was selected. The simulation results indicated that if the height of the flights is increased from 1.60 to 2.26 m and the slope is increased from 45 to 48 degrees the material arrive at the first 0.48 m of drying chamber. In this manner, the unused part of the drying chamber decreases from 59% to 36% of the length. After installation of the new feed chute, during a period of three months the throughput increased by 36 t/h.

A cyclonic-static micro bubble flotation column (FCSMC) is an effective separation device for fine grain treatment. The separation of fine ilmenite by FCSMC was explored in this work. The influence of reagents dosage (regulator, collector and auxiliary collector), pulp density, circulation pressure and aeration quantity on TiO2grade and recovery wasinvestigated.The optimal conditions of a rougher are follows: pulp density 45%, pH 5.0, MOH collector dosage 2800 g/t, diesel oil dosage 700 g/t, circulationpressure 0.19 MPa, aeration quantity 0.8 m3/(m2•min). The optimal conditions of a cleaner are follows: pH 4.0, circulation pressures 0.16 MPa, and aeration quantity 0.5 m3/(m2•min).A pilot plant continuous test with a rougher-cleaner by FCSMC for 72 hours was proceeded under the optimum conditions. Compared with industrial flotation machines, the concentrate grade of FCSMC is 48.11% with an improvement of 1.08 percentagepoints, while the recovery is 82.36% with 13.64 percentagepoints increment. Moreover, the flowsheet is simplified from six parts (a rougher-two scavenger-three cleaner) in flotation machines to two parts (a rougher-cleaner) in FCSMC. Proofs were also provided by the analysis of the by-size grade and recovery of concentrate.Results show the FCSMC is an effective separation device to recover -74 µm size fraction.

"Gold (Au) extraction is inefficient when crushed waste mobile phones (WMPs) are directly leached by ammonium thiosulfate likely because of the cementation/precipitation of dissolved Au in the presence of base metals like copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and/or aluminum (Al). This study applied physical separation techniques to remove base metals as well as plastics and concentrate the Au containing fractions from WMPs prior to leaching. Coarse fraction of crushed WMP (+2-5.6 mm) was pretreated by jig and magnetic separation to remove plastics and base metals like Fe, Cu, and Al, while the fine fraction (-2 mm) was pretreated by flotation, and float and sink separation. The leaching results showed that Au extraction increased in both of the size fractions. In the coarse fraction, Au extraction increased by as much as 2-fold after pretreated (from 4 to 7%). Improvement of Au extraction in the fine fractions after pretreatments were even more dramatic. Au extraction increased from 4 to 61%. These results indicate that physical pretreatment to remove co-existing common metals and plastics is effective to improve Au extraction from WMPs. INTRODUCTION Global sales of mobile phones are expected to increase steadily in the foreseeable future because a lot of people buy newer phones with upgraded and more advanced functions almost every two years, which leads to the higher generation of waste mobile phones (WMPs). WMPs contain a wide variety of materials including plastics, glasses, base metals and precious metals such as gold (Au). Among all the valuable materials in WMPs, Au accounts for over 80% of its total metal price (Park et al., 2017), so recovery of Au from WMPs is needed."

"A gold has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution and several leaching conditions have been studied. The leached solution has been recovered by solvent extraction and the optimum conditions have been investigated.SUMMARYIn this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 – 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 – 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 – 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration."

"Gold dissolution was investigated in ferric chloride media, promoted as one of the most promising alternatives for cyanide-free gold leaching. The characteristics of gold open circuit potential (OCP) and its relation to gold dissolution rate was investigated. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of gold dissolution in ferric chloride leaching was discussed. The effect of solution variables, [Fe3+] = 0.02–1.0 M, [Cl–] = 2–5 M, T = 25–95 °C and pH = 0–1.0, on OCP and dissolution rate were studied electrochemically using rotating disk electrode (RDE) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) method with ?cyc = 1000 RPM. The investigated gold OCPs in ferric chloride solutions were found to vary between 597 and 688 mV vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE) and gold dissolution rates between 1.2·10–5–5.0·10–4 mol s–1 m–2. Increase in temperature (25–55 °C) and ferric concentration (0.02–1.0 M) changed OCP into more positive values, while increase in chloride concentration (2–5 M) decreased it. The logarithm of gold dissolution rate was shown to increase linearly with increasing OCP at the temperature range 25–95 °C, ferric concentration range 0.02–0.5 M and chloride concentration range 2–4 M. A notable increase in the gold dissolution reaction rate was evident at T > 55 °C. INTRODUCTION Currently cyanide leaching is the predominant method used in gold production from primary raw materials (Marsden and House, 2006). However, since the Baia Mare disaster in Romania in 2000, the use of cyanide has been the subject of international concern due to the toxic nature of the chemical posing a significant health threat if exposed to the ecological entities (Hilson and Monhenius, 2006; UNEP/OCHA, 2000). Therefore, several countries e.g., Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, many states of the USA and provinces of Argentina, have started to ban or limit cyanidation via legislation (Laitos, 2012). Thus, alternative solutions, such as thiourea, thiosulphate, oil-coal agglomerates as well as halides have been investigated in order to replace cyanide as lixiviant (Adams, 2016; Aromaa et al., 2014; Aylmore, 2005; Hilson and Monhemius, 2006; Lampinen et al., 2015). Ferric and cupric chloride leaching have been reported to have advantage over cyanidation being capable to dissolve refractory gold minerals, without pre-treatment such as pressure oxidation or roasting (Angelidis et al., 1993; Lundström et al., 2014; Marsden and House, 2006; van Meersbergen et al., 1993). According to Aylmore (2005), 4% of publications for alternative lixiviants to cyanide in gold leaching were within category oxidative chloride processes including aqua regia and acid ferric chloride leaching. Further, some patents have been granted for ferric chloride leaching of gold (Abe and Hosaka, 2010; Lundström et al., 2016)"

In a first stage of our investigations material properties of fly ash (three acidic and one alkaline type originating from combustion of various age coal) obtained from four various dumps have been characterized. In a next step systematic mechanical activation experiments??grinding??and measurements have been performed with various ashes to establish relations between grinding fineness (specific surface area), specific work input demand of grinding and activity. In a third phase utilization of a mixture of mechanically activated fly ash and lime for producing an independent binding composition has been assessed involving determination of interrelationship(s) between the degree of activation of fly ash, the lime concentration and the resultant strength of the obtained concrete. Finally, pilot size experiments were conducted and a test road section was built to explore possibilities for the production of suitable binding composition from the mixture of fly ash and lime as well as the applicability such mixture for road construction. After summarizing major achievements of the first and second stages of the work (history) the present study deals with the research conducted in stages three and four. Experimental results support the conclusion that the obtained binding material is suitable for construction of road bedding.

Beneficiation of alumina rich iron ore slimes is a major challenge for the Indian iron ore industry. One of the methods by which this problem might be addressed is by design/screening of suitable reagents (flocculants/depressants/collectors) which act selectively towards either aluminum containing minerals (gibbsite and kaolinite) or iron bearing minerals (hematite and goethite) in order to separate them. Our earlier work indicates that separation of iron oxide minerals from gibbsite is relatively more difficult than from kaolinite. Accordingly, our research work has been focused on finding selective reagents for iron oxide ? gibbsite separation. We have performed density functional theory (DFT) computations to evaluate the interaction energies of seven different reagent groups - carboxylic acid, flotol, hydroxamic acid, phosphonic acid, iminobismethyl phosphoric acid, xanthate and starch with hematite and gibbsite surfaces. The objective was to identify if any of these groups show selective adsorption towards one of the mineral surfaces. Among all these reagents, starch exhibits the highest selectivity towards the hematite surface with a difference in interaction energy of ~63 kcal/mol between hematite and gibbsite surfaces. This is consistent with experimental findings at our laboratories on slime samples from Noamundi mines wherein it is being observed that usage of starch as a flocculant does lead to an improvement in the final grade of the ore with significant reduction in the Al-content. A binuclear complexation mechanism based on affinity between Fe and Ostarch atoms combined with a geometrical templating effect, arising out of a close correspondence between Fe-Fe distance on the hematite surface and O-O distance in starch, is proposed to explain the strong adsorption of starch on hematite surface. "Waste streams, such as acid mine drainage, are often characterised by low pH values and high concentrations of heavy metals, dissolved solids, calcium and sulphates. Although lime remediation effectively removes most of the heavy metals as hydroxides, it is less effective at lowering levels of sulphates. Various methods of removing sulphates from effluents exist, such as precipitation with lime, precipitation with barium salts, co-precipitation with calcium carbonate, reverse osmosis, and ion exchange. Mintek developed a chemical precipitation (SAVMIN) process to treat acid mine drainage, which entails the addition of lime to precipitate the metal hydroxides, and the subsequent formation (precipitation) of calcium sulphoaluminate or ettringite. The key to the viability of the new technology lies in the correct use, regeneration and recycling of Al(OH)3 used to precipitate the ettringite. The water produced by this process is suitable for disposal to watercourses or for agricultural, domestic or industrial consumption. No brines are produced as the salts are converted to solid hydroxides, gypsum and calcium carbonate.The SAVMIN process has been tested successfully during several laboratory scale operations, and during two pilot plant operations at Stilfontein Goldmine for Anglogold and Navigation Plant, Witbank for Anglocoal. During the pilot plant campaign at Navigation Plant, metal and mineral precipitation was achieved with lime addition. The sulphate concentration in the water was reduced from 2136 mg/L to an average value of 102 mg/L and the calcium concentration was reduced from 727 mg/L to an average value of 70mg/L.The SAVMIN process generates a number of different waste streams including metal hydroxide sludge from neutralisation, gypsum sludge from the gypsum crystallisation steps, and calcite sludge from carbonation. The metal hydroxide sludge is composed of Mg, Ca, Mn and Fe hydroxide, and could be disposed of on a slimes dam. Gypsum sludge was greater than 99% CaSO4.2H2O. This gypsum could be used for dump or road capping, underground backfilling, production of wallboard and cement. The calcite sludge is pure CaCO3, which is recycled back to the neutralisation stage."

Thiosulfate leaching as an environmentally benign alternative to cyanide leaching has received particular attention in recent years. Most studies have focused on thiosulfate leaching of free milling ores and, to some extent, pregrobbing ores. In this study, leaching of gold from the refractory Kaletas ore (in which gold/silver alloy is the only mode of occurrence detected) in ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions was studied. A two-level full factorial design (23) was adopted to investigate the effects of concentration of thiosulfate (0.2-1 M Na2S2O3), ammonia (0.5-1 M NH3) and copper (0.05-0.1 M CuSO4) on the extraction of gold from a ground ore (-38 µm) over a period of 24 h. Statistical analysis confirmed the leaching of gold improved with increasing concentrations of thiosulfate and ammonia. In contrast, increasing the concentration of copper in the range tested adversely affected the extraction of gold. The magnitude of effects of parameters on the gold extraction was in the order of Na2S2O3 > NH3 > CuSO4. The maximum extraction of gold (69.6%) was obtained in the presence of 1 M Na2S2O3, 1 M NH3 and 0.05 M CuSO4. The negative influence of copper on gold extraction is most likely attributed to the decomposition of thiosulfate catalyzed by copper. Concentration of thiosulfate was also identified to be statistically the most important parameter for its consumption.

This paper explores the relationship between the rheological behaviour and mineralogical nature of three different natural ore types. Rheological measurements performed here on Platreef, Kimber-lite and Norseman-Wiluna ores are correlated with the variation of phylosilicate mineral content in these ores and the corresponding physical properties of selected phylosilicate mineral groups. Preliminary results show that the clay mineral group (talc) has the least effect on both Bingham yield stress and viscosity of the three ore slurries tested, whereas the serpentine mineral group has a dramatic increasing effect on the Bingham yield stress especially at very low solid volume fractions. The Bingham viscosity of the mineral slurry appears to be the most influenced by the presence of the swelling clay mineral group (smectite). Significant increases in either Bingham yield stress or viscosity due to elevated contents of these problematic phylosilicate mineral groups are likely to cause negative effects on the processing and manageability of mineral slurries but it is unclear which is likely to have a more detrimental effect.

"Actually, the recovery of valuable metals such as iron, aluminium and copper is a nowadays practice in factories dealing with the processing of scrapped automobiles (Harder (WERG); Koga et al., 1997). This process has reach a recycling rate of about 75%, and generates a huge volume of waste (including cottons, sponge, plastics, rubber, etc…), locally known as “shredder dust”, which is commonly dumped on landfills; its recycling is either unsatisfactorily or not yet performed (Keller and Schebdat, 2000).The saturation and depletion of valuable disposal sites in the not-so-distant future, as well as the social and environmental problems related to the accumulation of these residues disposals are a major challenge for the automobile shredding industry.To promote an alternative way for the management of these disposals, the authors have initiated and developed a system for their processing, on the basis that more than 90% of these residues are combustible materials that could be used as refuses derived fuel. The developed processing system points out the mechanical/physical separation of a calibrated (–80+5mm) shredded automobiles residues into two streams by means of an ascending airflow passing through a vertical zigzag separator and, the compaction of the light-weight materials (that is about 60% of auto shredder residue recovered as float products and mainly composed of cotton, sponges and light plastics) to form a refuse derived fuel (RDF), the density, calorific value and ignition loss of which are 1.19 g/cm3, 4470 kcal/kg and 60.7%, respectively. A sedimentation tank is used to recover the light-weight materials deported in the heavy fraction stream."

Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

Low extractions (<80%) in cyanide leaching impose the application of physical and chemical pre-treatment methods (e.g., ultra-fine grinding, roasting, alkaline leaching) prior to cyanide leaching to achieve acceptable recoveries. The effectiveness of the selected pre-treatment method is linked intimately with inherent mineralogical properties of ore. In this study, a refractory silver ore assaying 145 g/t Ag was subjected to various pretreatment tests in an attempt to eliminate its refractoriness. Direct cyanidation of the ground ore (d80: 65 µm) produced a low silver extraction of only 29.5% over 24 h indicating its high refractoriness. Previous studies have shown that silver occurs mainly as Sb/As containing sulfide minerals such as pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) and proustite (Ag3AsS3), which do not respond well to cyanide leaching. Also, silver-containing minerals are closely associated with and/or encapsulated in other mineral phases that can restrict the contact of cyanide with silver. Therefore, alkaline leaching (using 3 M of Na2S, NaOH or KOH solution) and ultra-fine grinding as pre-treatment methods were tested to improve the extraction of silver. All the alkaline leaching tests were carried out for 3 h at800C. Neither NaOH nor KOH leaching produced the desired effect on the extraction of silver (i.e., ~30%). Even, a sharp decrease in the extraction of silver (i.e., 10%) was observed in Na2S leaching. On the other hand, ultra-fine grinding (UFG) (d80: 3 µm) substantially improved the extraction of silver in cyanide leaching (95% Ag at 24 h after UFG). It can be inferred from these findings that the refractoriness of the ore is essentially physical in character (i.e. the encapsulation of silver presumably in non-sulphide minerals such as barite and quartz).

"The evaluation of health hazards within the treatment of mineral and waste materials is gaining more and more importance in industrial countries. The need to control occupational safety has been recognised, and regulations which describe general protective measurements for personnel provide a tool to protect their health. It is the aim of the paper to give an outlook for practical approaches to risk assessment and to present measures for exposure reduction in accordance with the state of the art in Germany.Both the treatment of minerals and of waste materials are described in relation to the risk assessment. The method of evaluating health hazards in the two industries is similar and therefore both examples are presented next to each other.The example presented in the paper is the German “Biostoffverordnung” (the regulation for biological materials) which is important for the waste treatment industry. All kinds of waste treatment facilities (like composting facilities, waste dumps, sorting facilities for packaging materials) are obliged to carry out an assessment of health hazards for a variety of working areas and working places. The possible safety requirements deriving from this regulation are presented and discussed under the aspect of biological hazards.All over the world each country has different guidelines and regulations but all have one target in common – to protect the employees. This can be achieved through a good management system of occupational health and safety.
