Back-break induced from blasting is a concern in open pit metal mining because it compromises the conditions of the pit’s final walls. Final walls that have excessive blast induced damage commonly require extra attention and can often lead to increased cycle times. Most importantly however, the safety conditions of a back-broken region can be significantly compromised and it must be addressed to prevent injury and/or damage to equipment. This occasionally results in the necessity to alter mine plans to prevent an incident from occurring in a back-broken region which can be costly to the mine.

In New England, an area of the country where 3 ½" holes are considered large diameter,we are starting to experiment with 5" and 6" holes. The results are excellent in some areas and poor in others. The geology of rock is the major consideration to account for the blasting results.

As the title implies, this paper details the start of a cast blasting and the design flexibility required to satisfy different parameters encountered on a large coal mine employing cast blasting as the program has grown and evolved around the town of Colstrip, Montana. As strip ratios have increased, the need to adapt and find solutions to provide coal at a reasonable cost to the mine mouth power plants has risen. Colstrip, Montana has a long history of coal mining which dates back to the early 1920s when Foley Brothers began supplying coal strictly for powering locomotive engines.

United Taconite is an iron ore mine operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (Cliffs) located near Eveleth, Minnesota. The mine, originally known as Eveleth Taconite Mines, was purchased in December 2003 by Cliffs (70%) and Laiwu Steel (30%). The mine site, known as the Thunderbird Mine, produces taconite ore for delivery by rail to the company’s Fairlane plant, located approximately 10 miles to the south near Forbes, Minnesota. At the plant, the crude ore is ground, concentrated and processed into pellets for steel industry customers. Total pellet production capacity is about 5.4 million long tons (Ltons) per year.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

"Manufacturers and users of energetic material [i.e., propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics (PEP)] generate unserviceable, obsolete, off-specification, and damaged items that are characterized as reactive waste. These items must be safely treated and disposed of or reclaimed/recycled, thereby controlling existing waste inventories at manageable levels. The most commonly used disposal and treatment method, particularly at U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) installations, is open burning/open detonation (OB/OD). However, regulatory constraints and the inability of operators toobtain permits required for treating these waste has led to the recent reductions and limited use of OB/OD treatment at many installations."

A blast monitoring program conducted at Chemical Lie Company’s new lime calcining facility near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri is discussed. The purpose was to develop blasting criteria for the construction and operation of the lime plant within the quarry operated by Tower Rock Stone. Further, it was imperative to accommodate production requirements into the blasting criteria. The major concern was the effect of blasting on the curing of green concrete during the construction of the storage silos and kiln stacks. In addition to discussing the susceptibility of curing concrete to blast vibrations, the paper also details how this varies with time.

With the advance of science, rise of public interest in environmental matters, and continuing erosion of air quality, Federal and state regulators are demanding an increasing complex array of data concerning emissions produced by burning and detonating energetic materials. The Panama Metro System’s Network expansion involves excavating a launching shaft for a tunnel boring machine (TBM) to traverse beneath the Panama Canal. The blasting needed for this shaft construction poses significant challenges due to the presence of concrete walls encircling the excavation. These walls must remain intact throughout construction and the tunnel's future operation. This case study is focused on devising and implementing safe blasting techniques crucial for the shaft's construction, ensuring the preservation of surrounding concrete walls and project equipment. As the interest was potential damage to the concrete walls, an appropriate vibration threshold for this project was also required as an alternative to the traditional U.S. Bureau of Mining RI-8507 limit (USBM RI8507). Blast modeling software was employed to conduct a series of blasting simulations. Parameters like hole diameter, spacing, depth, explosive type, and initiation methods were varied to evaluate their potential effects on wall stability and damage risk. The simulations revealed that smaller diameter holes and reduced spacing between blast holes would effectively mitigate the risk of wall instability. Additionally, utilizing electronic delay detonators and carefully planning the blast hole detonation sequence proved critical in minimizing potential damage. Executing these blasts in the field presented unique challenges, including strict charge per delay thresholds and logistical constraints. Consequently, continuous adjustments to blasting parameters were made and comparative result analysis. Beyond providing a safe blasting strategy for the TBM launching shaft, this study offers invaluable insights into adapting blasting designs to align with environmental and structural safety standards. These findings hold great potential to shape guidelines for analogous sensitive construction projects. They underscore the importance of leveraging prior research as a reference point, engaging with project designers and local authorities, and continually conducting testing and adjustments to ensure project success.

The Industrialization of a country depends on its mining activities to a great extent. In mineral production, India has a top rank not only in South Asia, at the global level too. Quantum of mineral production is almost directly proportional to the quantum of explosive production. Mining sector consume more than 80% of country’s explosive production. Due to rapid growth of mining activities in the country, the explosives industry has been developing very fast in terms of quantity, quality and types. , In this paper, India’s post independent chronological date regarding use of explosives, their types, their constraints and a profile of well-known manufacturers has been meticulously presented. A production figure for three years with system analysis has been presented. The paper also deals with present consumption pattern while making a futuristic forecast. In view of the anticipated changes that are to take place in mining industries in near future, the manufacturers of explosives have to pay a vital role. The paper highlights some concrete and valuable suggestions and recommendations. Small scale Companies have to limit their production to Slurry and Emulsion types of Cartridged explosives whereas the large manufacturing units have to concentrate on Bulk explosives, specialized explosives and better initiating systems. The large manufacturing units have also to make all concerted efforts to compete with global market for significant export. The Country for its rapid growth needs basic raw materials like Coal, Iron Ore and Limestone. So, the extraction of these minerals is of prime importance. The more we produce and consume, the more will be Industrialization. The Industrial growth rate has been around 6% during the last few years. As the Industrial growth rate is moderate, there is moderate increase in mineral extraction in the Country. Additional mineral extraction demands additional explosive production (Annexure-1).

Blast vibration monitoring for buried pipelines is typically conducted at the ground surface with a shallowly buried geophone. In many jurisdictions across the U.S., blast-related vibration limits set for pipelines are dictated by surface measurements and do not consider the significant reduction of PPV amplitudes acting on the pipe at depth. This study involved a vertical array of geophones deployed in drilled holes at two blasting sites of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway construction project in Phoenix, Arizona. This project involved the construction of a new 4-story library on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The new building was constructed completely below grade, adjoining several of the oldest buildings on the campus. Excepting some surface soil, the job was 100% rock and the excavation had to be completed within a 3-month window.

The City of Henderson, Nevada is experiencing extraordinary population growth. Some residential development requires blasting to be conducted at close proximities to high-value houses. Blastingrelated concerns voiced by the community residents include dust, noise, fears of damage to residences, and claims of insufficient controls exercised by the blasters. Residents perceive geological conditions are adverse to the protection of structures at the current vibration regulatory limit of 0.5 in/s. Airblast limits are 120 dB. Vibrations felt within structures leave home owners with the perception that damage is taking place. New cracks appearing in homes at distances far from the blasting are being blamed on blasting.

The safety record for explosives in U. S. mining is excellent considering that over 4 billion pounds of explosives are now being used each year. However, blasting accidents remain one of the most serious concerns based on the number of injuries, the injury severity rate and the disaster potential. The Bureau of Mines has been analyzing blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) to determine the most frequent causes of mine blasting accidents and to examine trends in blasting accidents. This accident analysis is an update of two previous blasting accident studies conducted by the Bureau and published in 1983 and 1987.
