"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945 the Bureau of Mines made approximately 200 miles of reconnaissance magnetic surveys in north-central Mirnesota. The survey started near the western end of the Mesabi Iron Range and extended into the area to the southwest, west, and northwest and also southward to the-northern limits of the Cuyuna Iron Range. The purpose of the survey was to data to assist exploration for iron ore in the region through:1. Supplying a relatively unit form network of traverses, by which and future surveys of localities in the urea ray be correlated. Suggesting localities in which more detailed magnetic surveys may be justified, and, Disclosing localities in which there is lass hope of obtaining significant results from further magnetic surveys.The instrument used was a Hotchkiss Superdip, and traverses for calibration and comparison were run with a Schmidt-type magnetometer. Field observations and work directly related thereto were carried out under contract by E. J. Lang-year Co., Minneapolis. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines planned, directed, and reviewed the survey."

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a study and statistical analysis of part of the initial exploration churn-drill sampling and some of the subsequent underground diamond-drill-core sampling in the North are body at the San Manuel copper mine, Arizona. These data were derived from regular exploration and mine sampling, not from special samples obtained solely for statistical analysis. The study was conducted as part of the Bureau's continuing program on sampling-methods research. The major objective of the study was to investigate the feasibility of using the techniques of statistical analysis in evaluating sample and assay data and computing grade and tonnage of Ore from porphyry-type copper deposits. It was recognized that using existing data acquired over a period of several years by different methods would introduce problems and limitations for precise comparisons. However, it was expected that the study would provide some general conclusions and certainly a number of preliminary conclusions on the nature of the mineral characteristics and their effect on sampling procedures, the requirements for sampling deposits of this type, and the comparative results of churn-and diamond-drill sampling in the same area of the deposit. All of this information would be essential for future sampling-methods research for computing grade and tonnage of ore.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel engines is currently considered to be a health problem in underground mines. As a result, attempts have been made to control DPM both by reducing emission rates and by managing the DPM that gets into the mine atmosphere. This paper presents a method for modeling the generation, transfer, and distribution of DPM in coal mining sections through the use of a convection-based computer model so that controls for emitted DPM can be evaluated. A variety of ventilation strategies and diesel deployment schemes for room-and-pillar development sections were simulated to compare their effects on average DPM concentrations at several fixed and mobile personnel locations in the section. Input data for the model was gathered from actual diesel development sections and derived from experimental study results provided by other researchers. Analyzed using the model were ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, exhaust location strategies on the vehicles, and the direction of ventilation at the feeder-breaker location. A summary of results from this study is presented.With diesel equipment holding an important place in underground coal mining and growing in use over time, it is important to develop and improve controls of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM), to further reduce potential health hazards. The proper design and maintenance of diesel engines and on¬board control procedures are paramount requirements for controlling DPM successfully. There is also, however, a significant reduction potential in terms of personal exposure that can be realized by managing the DPM that gets into the airstream. Strategic design of the mining, ventilation, and equipment implementation systems remain essential for efficiently reducing the DPM concentrations.Modeling the effect of diesel exhaust contaminants upon the mine atmospheric quality will permit improved health and safety design of the overall mining and ventilation systems. Numerous studies have been performed to model the distribution/transport of gaseous and particulate emissions in the underground mine atmosphere and some very sophisticated convection/diffusion models have been developed (Skobunov, 1974; Thakur, 1974; Stefanko and Ramani, 1975; Wala, 1980; Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1983). Most of these models were developed for a single airway or based on the assumption that the ventilation network of a mining section can be approximately represented by a single intake and a single return. The complexity of most models of the convection/diffusion type and the mobility aspect of diesel haulage units made a detailed emissions model very difficult to develop.The current model is an attempt to fill the need for a more generic tool applicable to mining sections employing multiple mobile diesel units by simplifying the convection-diffusion model to a convection-only model. The simplification is based on the fact that the diffusion coefficient will affect only the transient environmental contaminant concentrations with little or no affect on the time-weighted-average concentrations over a relatively long period such as a working shift (Lee et al., 1994). In view of the difficulties involved in mathematical modeling, the approach here is developing and using a computer simulation model. A PC-based FORTRAN 77 simulation model for the analysis of mining systems with multiple diesel sources and any ventilation network configuration was developed to study the distribution/transport of DPM in mine airways, evaluate methods of reducing DPM concentrations, and explore modifications to existing mining practice."

The Romur is one of several properties in the Copper Mountain mining district, Fremont County, Wyo., that contain scheelite deposits. The district lies on the southern slope of the Bridger Mountains, 18 miles northeast of Shoshoni and 15 miles from the rail point at Bonneville on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (figs. 1 and 2). The tungsten deposits occur in a zone of pre-Cambrian schists and gneisses that have been cut by numerous basic dikes and granite pegmatite dikes. Scheelite occurs in lenses and pods that lie parallel to the foliation and bedding in the metamorphic rocks. The more important deposits are found in a lime-silicate rock consisting primarily of zoisite but with small quantities of quartz and carbonate. Scheelite was found in December 1941, and the area was mapped by the U. S. Geological Survey early in 1942. In November 1942 the Bureau of Mines commenced work on the Stardust-Comet group for the purpose of developing reserves for war requirements. The initial work consisted of driving an alit in the ore zone a distance of 109 feet. This zone was sampled during the progress of the work, and subsequently surface and underground exposures on adjoining properties also were sampled (figs: 5, 6, 7, and 8). One hundred twenty-four samples were obtained. Sample and assay data are shown in tables 2, 3, and 4.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,680-acre Lime Canyon Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-231) to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Clark County, NV, about 30 air miles southwest of Mesquite, NV. The area studied contains an estimated 44 million tons of indicated subeconomic resources of gypsum, an inferred subeconimic resource of limestone and dolomite, and occurrences of gold, copper, uranium, and zeolite. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain chiefly by carbonate rocks with lesser amounts of sandstone and shale. Metamorphic, granitic, and volcanic rocks also crop out within the area. Large portions of the area are overlain by alluvium. The Wilderness Study Area is within the Gold Butte mining district. Several gold mines with past production are nearby to the south of the Wilderness Study Area; one mine is reported in operation on a small scale. Studies are reported on the structure of coal and coke with the graphical , statistical densimetric method based on the relation between the molecular volume per carbon atom ( M / C ) and the atomic hydrogen - carbon ratio ( H / C ) . Previous work , mostly from chemical and physical investigations , is critically reviewed . Difficulties in evaluating the ring increment are demonstrated for coal and coke for the statistical densimetric method based on the additivity of atomic volumes of constituent elements . A new diagram is presented for the graphical method . Methods are introduced for correcting M /C and H/C for the presence of minor constituents in coal and coke . With the graphical method , the fractions of aromatic carbon atoms in the total carbon atoms are estimated for a coal , a resin , and 5 petrographic components ; the types of condensed structure in the fundamental units of molecules are discussed for these substances , 28 coals , and 6 " average " cokes at 500 ° to 1,000 ° C. It is also shown that the number of rings in the fundamental units of coal generally increases with increasing rank and that of coke , with increasing carbonization temperature .

Kroemer(1-3) and Kroemer et al.(4) define the isoinertial technique of strength assessment as one in which mass properties of an object are held constant, as in lifting a given weight over a predetermined distance. Several strength assessment procedures possess this characteristic. Most commonly associated with the term is a specific test developed to provide a relatively quick assessment of a subject's maximal lifting capacity using a modified weight-lifting device.(1,5) The classic psychophysical methodology of assessing maximum acceptable weights of lift is also considered an isoinertial technique under this definition.(6) While the definition provided by Kroemer(1) and Kroemer et al.(4) has been most widely accepted in the literature, some have applied the term "isoinertial" to techniques that differ somewhat from the preceding definition, such as in a description of the Isotechnologies B-200 strength testing device.(7) Rather than lifting a constant mass the B-200 applies a constant force against which the subject performs an exertion. The isoinertial tests described here apply to situations in which the mass to be moved by a musculoskeletal effort is set to a constant. Is Isoinertial Testing Psychophysical or Is Psychophysical Testing Isoinertial? As various types of strength tests have evolved over the past few decades, some unfortunate developments in terminology have arisen to describe and classify different strength assessment procedures. This is particularly evident in sorting out various tests that have been labeled "isoinertial." One example was cited earlier. Another problem that has evolved is that the term "isoinertial strength" has two connotations. The first is the conceptual definition: isoinertial strength tests include any strength test in which a constant mass is handled. In practice, however, the term is often used to denote a specific strength test in which subjects' maximal lifting capacity is determined using a machine and a constant mass is lifted.(1,5) Partially as a result of this dual connotation, the literature contains references to both "isoinertial strength test" as a psychophysical variant(8) and the psychophysical method as an "isoinertial strength test" (4,9) To lay the framework for the next two chapters, the authors will briefly discuss some operational definitions of tests of isoinertial and psychophysical strength. In stating that the isoinertial strength test is a variant of the psychophysical method, Ayoub and Mital(8) refer to the specific strength test developed by Kroemer(1) and McDaniel et al.(5) Clearly, this isoinertial protocol has many similarities to the psychophysical method: both are dynamic; weight is adjusted in both; and both measure the load a subject is willing to endure under specified circumstances. However, while both deal with lifting and adjusting loads, there are significant differences between the psychophysical (isoinertial) technique and the Kroemer-McDaniel (isoinertial) protocol in their procedures and the use of the data collected in these tests. The Bureau of Mines studied the feasibility of producing copper matte in an electric furnace from blends of copper concentrate similar to those currently smelted in a gas-fired reverberatory system at an installation in Tacoma, Wash. A 800-kva electric-arc furnace was used to determine the distribution of constituents when arseniferous concentrates are being smelted in an electric-arc furnace. Test results from smelting 40 tons of materials indicated that electric smelting is more like a conventional gas-fired system than originally expected. Although gas composition over the molten bath is much different in an electric furnace, the secondary constituents such as arsenic, lead, zinc, and antimony behaved the same as in a reverberatory furnace. The results established that an electric furnace would be compatible with sulfur and particulate recovery facilities that are being used.

REPORTS received from operating companies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, indicated marked progress in the reduction of injuries to employees in the coking industry in 1951 as compared with 1950. The fatality rate (0.14) per million man-hours of exposure declined 33 percent and was the second best performance since statistics on the industry were first collected in 1916. The nonfatal-injury rate (10.94), the best since 1940, declined 8 percent and was bettered only in 8 of the past 36 years. The nonfatal rate is based on all injuries resulting in loss of time for more than the remainder of the day on which the injury occurred. The exposure to hazard, as represented by the number of man-hours of work time during the year, was 7 percent higher than in 1950 and, except for the year 1943, was the highest since 1920. The fatality rate for men employed at beehive-coke ovens decreased 16 percent and the nonfatal-injury rate 23 percent, while the man-hours of work time or exposure increased slightly over 16 percent. The fatality and nonfatal-injury rates at byproduct ovens declined 33 and 2 ½ percent, respectively, while the number of man-hours worked increased 6 percent.

METHODS for measuring relative permeability as a valid function of saturation were compared by the. Bureau of Mines, using core samples from representative oil-productive California formations, from the Bartlesville sand in Oklahoma, and from synthetic samples. Measurements for gas-oil systems were made by steady-state dynamic, unsteady-state displacement and two stationary-phase methods. Measurements for water-oil systems were made by the unsteady-state displacement method. As the ratio rather than individual relative permeabilities is measured by the last method, three methods for calculating individual relative permeabilites from their measured ratio were compared for gas-oil systems and two methods for water-oil systems. Errors arising from capillary discontinuities, such as the end effect and stabilized-zone flow, are discussed and evaluated; possible errors rocs arising from turbulant flow are also examined. The inapplicability of non-steady-state methods for water-oil systems that are not definitely oil-wet is discussed in detail. Measurements of relative permeability to both gas and oil can be made quickly and accurately by the steady-state dynamic method when rates of flow of the two phases are sufficient to minimize the capillary discontinuity at the outflow end of the sample. At such rates relative permeability-saturation measurements are essentially independent of the rate of flow. The steady-state method wits modified by a dispersion section at the inflow end of the sample acid designated tie dispersed-feed method.

The United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado at the University of Colorado has conducted experiments to determine the amount and composition of the non-condensable gases evolved when crude shale oil is distilled under pressure. Hydrogen sulphide is one of the components found in the complex mixture of Gases produced by the distillation of shale oil under pressure. This paper deals with the apparatus and method used in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide evolved in the laboratory experimental cracking stills. The study required a complete extraction of all the hydrogen sulphide from the gas stream after it left the water-cooled distillate condensers and before the gas stream entered the charcoal absorber for removing the light naphtha. In devising the method it was necessary to take into account a constant variation of velocity, pressure, and percentage of sulphide in the total gas stream coming from the still. Ordinarily, the quantitative determination of hydrogen sulphide in gas is made by analyzing small samples taken at regular intervals. This estimation can be accomplished by use of the Bunts gas burette as modified by Tutriler, or by a similar method. In the industries where the flow of gas is constant and of uniform composition, this practice is sufficiently accurate for plant control. For experimental work where many variables have to be taken into consideration, as in the case at band; these methods are not applicable.

"IntroductionOn May 27, 1927, a coal-dust explosion occurred at the Palagua No. 5 mine of the Victor American Fuel Company, Delagua, Colorado, resulting in the loss of even lives and in and in considerable damage to the main slope and to several overcasts the explosion did not extend into the mine working where 125 additional men were employed but escaped uninjured. It is believed that the saving of these 125 men and the evidence of large property loss were due in a large measure to coal-dusting and of other sanity measures taken by the coal company management. A number of features connected with the explosion and mine safety practice seem worth the attention of the mining public and grateful acknowledgment is made to the Victor American Fuel Company for its aid in assembling the data herein contained."

When the Federal investigation of coal - dust explosions in mines was begun in 1908 , following a series of mine explosion disasters in 1907 , mining men generally questioned whether coal dust in air is explosive unless " gas " or methane is present , though perhaps in small amounts not detectable by a safety lamp . The experimental tests beginning in 1909 at the Pittsburgh testing gallery, and after 1911 , at the Experimental mine , demonstrated to the mining public the explosibility of coal dust in itself . There followed much controversy , both among practical mining men and scientists , as to whether the coal-dust particles uni te directly with the oxygen of the air, or whether gas is instantaneously distilled from the dust prior to explosive combustion , the gas enveloping each particle and propagating the flame from one to another . In considering methods of preventing explosions , this question made no difference for practical purposes , but it did have bearing in determining the relative inflammability of dusts of different coals . This led to the experiments by Guy B. Taylor and Horace C. Porter , on the momentary heating of the inflammable coal dusts , reported in this paper . Meanwhile , experiments on the inflammability of coal dust conducted in the Experimental mine , under my direction , and in the laboratory by J. C. W. Frazer and later by J. K. Clement and J. N. Lawrence , showed that different kinds of coal dust differ markedly in inflammability , thus confirming experiments made by Messrs . Taffanel and Durr at the Lievin Testing Station , France , and by various investigators in Great Britain . Both the French and British investigators concluded that their experiments demonstrated the distillation of volatile matter preceding inflammation .

About 300 tons of gold ore per week was being produced in February 1934 by Thomas D, Herron and Con Laster from the old lake Superior and Arizona workings; the ground was leased from the Magma Copper Co. The workings adjoined but were not a part of the Magma mine. The lessees had been employees of the Magma Copper Co, at the time the Magma closed down for the summer of 1932. Work on the lease began in July 1932 on an exposure of $2-per-ton ore disclosed in a drift; after a few hand-drilled rounds were blasted the gold content increased to about $30 per ton. Extensive sampling by pannings elsewhere of exposed portions of the vein indicated that other ore shoots existed. The last work previously done in the mine was during the World War, when lessees mined a number of small shoots of copper ore. In some of the stapes the copper miners had left a quartzose streak on the hanging wall that carried $15 per ton of gold. This material did not look as if it cried values and evidently never had been sampled. The first shipment of gold ore was made on September 28, 1932. Up to April 1, 1933, 3,778 tons had been shipped and from September 1, 1933, to January 31, 1934, 3,125 tons.

Some months ago the Bureau of Mines began research of a fundamental character on sulphur in petroleum. In the course of this work, the usual qualitative test for sulphur in organic compounds1 was applied to certain oils that were believed to contain approximately 0.5 percent sulphur. No sulphur was found, and, as a check on the qualitative test, the oils were subjected to quantitative determination of this element by the oxygen-bomb method.2 The sulphur content of the oils ranged from 0.10 per cent to 0.50 per cent. This experience led to further trial of the qualitative test for organic sulphur, both on the oils mentioned above, and on common sulphur-containing organic substances. No difficulty was experienced in detecting the element in the latter, but with the petroleum oils the test, as usually performed, could not be relied upon to detect less than 0.60 per cent of sulphur consistently. The use of mechanically polished pure sheet copper for the detection of free sulphur, hydrogen sulphide, and perhaps other sulphur compounds has been recommended.3

This Bureau of Mines study covers 25 underground mines that were active in the Upper and Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coalbeds in 1976. The coal ranges from low to medium volatile in rank; its primary use is for steam generation. Seven mines emit more than 100,000 cfd of methane gas; those mines are the deepest and largest producers. The methane gas content of three core samples of the Lower Kittanning coalbed was estimated by the direct method. A sample from a depth of 320 feet contained 0.5 cu cm of gas per gram, at 620 feet there was 0.8 cu cm of gas per gram, and at 1,060 feet there was 11 cu cm of gas per gram. These results suggest that methane control problems will be encountered in the future as deeper coal is mined.

THE ABRASIVES INDUSTRY throughout the world enjoyed a profitable year. With the exception of tripoli, the quantity of each kind of abrasive produced in the United States was greater than for any of the past 5 years and value of each was greater than for many years. Production of silicon carbide both in the United States and in Canada was the largest since 1960. Abrasive machining, which offers great potential for the increased Use of aluminum oxide, contributed to increased industrial productivity. Diamonds from the sea off the coast of South-West Africa attracted wide interest. Much of the production from this source has been gem diamond, and there is little likelihood of significant quantities of industrial diamond from that source. Manufactured diamond from all free-world sources was sold in the United States in 1964.

"INTRODUCTION During the first phases of the war emergency the shortage of aluminum prompoted the Bureau of Mines to investigate methods for using low-grade bauxites of high silica content and also clays as raw-material sources of this strategic metal. The Bayer process treats low-silica bauxites to provide the industry with a major portion of the purified alumina, which contains very low percentages of silica and other impurities. One of the methods investigated in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for low-grade materials is the lime-soda sinter process, which was studied on a pilot-plant scale. In this process, the alumina content of the alumina-bearing minerals Bs made water-soluble by sintering the raw material with limestone and soda. Simultaneously, the siliceous material is rendered insoluble. The sinter is extracted with an alkaline liquor, and the resulting extract liquor is treated as follows to recover the alumina: (1) Autoclaving with lime to remove silica as a zeolitic complex and (2) treatment with CO2 to precipitate alumina as the trihydrate (A1203.3H20). Figure 1 is schematic flow sheet of this process.As the process is cyclic, it is necessary that nearly all of the soda and alumina remaining in the plant liquors after carbonation be recovered. Upon passing through one cycle, these liquors contain 14 to 15 percent NaCO3 2 to 5 percent NaOH, 1 to 3 percent A1203, minor amounts of silica, and, with certain materials such as Pennsylvania diasporic clays, 0.5 to 1.0 percent Na2S04. Approximately 50 percent of the Na20 in these liquors must be returned, as soda ash, to the dry-grinding and raw-materials blending operations. Previous work (6)5/ on sulfate-free solutions demonstrated that two methods for recovering Na20 were feasible, namely: (1) Salting out Na2C03.H20 by evaporation of the carbonated solutions and (2) crystallizing Na2C03.10H20 by cooling the concentrated carbonated solutions."

Increasing use of continuous miners, especially the boring type, has focused attention on the inadequacy of face ventilation in coal mines. The bulk of the machine, the rapid advance of working faces, and the increased liberation of methane from the larger expanse of freshly exposed coal surfaces have created ventilation problems that were unknown with conventional mining equipment. Ignition of gas, especially that caused by machine bits striking hard rock or pyritic inclusions, have increased at an alarming rate. As the mines penetrate beds under thicker cover at an ever-increasing rate of face advance, this problem will probably increase unless face ventilation is improved. A previous survey, described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5414, Auxiliary Ventilation of Continuous Miner Places, disclosed that auxiliary fans with tubing generally improved circulation of air and removal of gas at the face. The study here reported attempts to examine, face ventilation at various mines and to note any plan or innovation of. air coursing that industry might adopt to reduce the danger of gas ignition. Over the past decade, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has studied longwall gate road stability at four mines in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau Coalfields of Utah. These operations are characterized by multiple-seam mining, abruptly varying cover depths to 914 m (3;000 ft), and massive rigid, sandstone units in the main roof or floor. Such conditions encourage severe bumping, roof instability, and occasional floor heave problems.' Various gate road configurations have been employed to alleviate' these problems. Although the mines have comparable basic conditions, the lithologies and qualities of the immediate roof, floor; and seam ate different in each mine and often vary in a single mine. Gate road systems that mitigate hazards in one mine may prove inappropriate in another or for different areas of the same mine. This report relates the geology of the coalfields; describes the location, geologic setting, specific mining conditions, operating history, and the USBM field study and results or conclusions for each mine; summarizes the relative performance of the gate road systems; and emphasizes the need for site-specific geotechnical data to evaluate gate road conditions and performance.
