This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) research simplified an earlier hydrogen chloride (HCI) leach-sparge process developed by the USBM to recover reduction-grade alumina from domestic kaolin clay. Improvements were made by decreasing the initial leaching acid concentration from 25 to 20 pet, decreasing the leaching time from 1 to 2 h to 15 to 30 min, eliminating the solvent extraction step for Fe removal, and eliminating the step to recover the AI content of the bleedstream circuit. A 10-cycle bench-scale experiment of the simplified process showed that the ferric chloride (FeC13) concentration built up to 9.3 g/L in the recycle stream. This did not interfere with any of the unit operations or final alumina product purity because Fe forms stable soluble chloride complexes when sparged with HCI and is easily washed from the large aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) crystals. The reduced leaching time and acid concentration did not decrease Al extraction.

This report presents the results of a cooperative study between the Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah to define the mechanism involved in the adsorption of oleic acid and sodium oleate on fluorite, calcite, and barite, using an infrared spectrophotometer for identifying and measuring the adsorbed reagents and reaction products. Fluorite, calcite, and barite react with oleic acid and sodium oleate in a water system, forming chemisorbed and solution products. The chemisorbed species is a surface mineral cation-collector anion salt, Chemical analysis of solution resulting from the adsorption reaction indicates that the adsorption process causes displacement of mineral anions, namely, fluoride, carbon ate, and sulfate from the surface of these minerals.

This study of the rate of evaporation of zinc was undertaken as a part, of a general investigation on refining mixtures of metals resulting from melting reclaimed scrap. One of the methods by which the more volatile metals, such as zinc, magnesium, and cadmium, may be separated is by distillation. Distillation may be carried out at lower temperatures if it is done in an evacuated enclosure. The immediate purpose of the present investigation was to determine accurately the effect of temperature, pressure, and other factors on the rate of evaporation of zinc.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods of separating valuable rare-earth materials from Fe in neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnet scrap. A selective oxidation treatment of the scrap oxidized the rare-earth portion while leaving elemental Fe. Magnetic and leaching procedures were tried for separating the metallic Fe and rare-earth oxides, but the extremely fine grain size of the oxidized scrap prevented recovery by either technique. The best separation of rare earths from bulk NdFeB magnet scrap was obtained by dissolution with H2S04 followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. By precipitating neodymium-alkali sulfate double salts as an intermediate that can be converted to a variety of useful products, many materials-handling and economic disadvantages found with direct precipitation with fluoride or oxalate were avoided. Iron was removed from magnet leach solutions by precipitation as a jarosite, eliminating a major disposal problem. Research was also conducted with contaminated mixed SmCo5 and NdFeB swarf. Using a flotation-leaching technique allows the SmCo5 to concentrate in the froth, while the grinding-medium contaminant sinks and is removed as tailing. The NdFeB is dissolved by H2S04 during the process.

"The Piedmont Manganese Belt extends from Taliferro County, Georgia, 70 miles in a northeasterly direction through Greenwood County, South Carolina, and conforms with the trend of the Piedmont Province. The total area of the belt is reported to be about 1,000 square miles, and the maximum-width is about 24 miles.Manganese has been known to exist in the belt since 1845. M. Tuomey mentioned a deposit in the Edgefield district on Hard Labor Creek in South Carolina in a report on the geology of South Carolina published in 1848.Ore was first mined about the time of the first World War, when the Colley mine, near Lincolnton, Ga., was. Opened. The only operation in the area at present is that of the Abernathy & Kehaya Mining Co., at McCormick, S. C.The geographical position of the belt is from west longitude 82° 57’, north latitude 33° 39' to west longitude 82° 06', north latitude 34° 08'. The towns of Washington and Lincolnton, Ga., and McCormick and Greenwood, S. C., are in or near the belt.An exploratory project of the Bureau of Mines was started on the McCormick, S. C., deposit in April 1944, and trenching, test pitting, and hand-auger drilling-were done on a small scale until early in October 1944. (Fig. 1.) In November 1944 work was begun on a property 12 miles north of McCormick, known as Parsons Mountain, which is leased to M. H. McKnight by the United States Forest Service. From March 15 to March 24, 1945, work was done on the property of Mrs. H. B. Ross, which is known as the Morgan farm.The Abernathy & Kehaya manganese mine contains what is locally known as the Dorn gold mine; mineral rights on the property were owned by M. G. & J. J. Dorn, Inc."

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies were designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena.4 This report is the fifth of a series5/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the constant pressure flame temperature of acetylene-air for a range of pressures.

A central requirement for using simulation models is the need for retrospect testing to validate experimental conclusions. Acceptance of a model by managers and safety practitioners is more likely to depend on its tested performance in-the field rather than on the underlying logic or the validity aspects of the model itself. It is here that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. The original version of the rail haulage sub-assembly was success¬fully tested in the field (Sanford, 1969). However, the case studies that were described here involved single-stage haulage and restricted jobtypes from UGMHS. Since this report together with Volume VI (Production Subsystem) describes extensive changes and modifications to the rail haulage sub-assembly and UGMHS, field tests were necessary to verify both the rail model and the linking concepts to the Produc¬tion Sub-system. Mine Description The candidate mine selected for model verification works the 6 1/2 foot Pittsburgh seam. Shaft openings are used for manways and ventilation and a dual compartment slope for materials handling. In the bottom half of the slope, a hoist with track handles supplies and equipment. In the upper half, a 42 inch belt conveyor travelling at 450 fpm moves coal from a rotary dump to the surface. The immediate roof is shale with the first 12 inches taken during development mining. About 4500 raw tons are produced daily from seven face units and one spare working three shifts. At seven of the sections,

Samples of materials containing pyrite from various coal mines and coalbeds were studied to compare their compositions and oxidizing characteristics. Pyrite was the only form of iron sulfide identified, but X-ray diffraction, emission spectrography, and microscopic analyses revealed similar suites of minerals and trace elements. The pyrite occurred usually in spherical clusters of very small crystals. The oxidation of pyrite in solutions of PeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 and in the presence of an iron oxidizing bacterium Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, was studied through a manometric technique. FeS04 or Fe2(SO4)3 solutions had no appreciable influence on pyrite oxidation under the test conditions, The bacterium acted as a catalyst, greatly increasing the oxidation rates; however, in three samples that also contained calcites, bacterial oxidation was greatly reduced. The oxidation rates also increased approximately as the percentage of pyrite in the samples increased. For the series of samples studied, there was no definite correlation of the results with the location of the various mines nor with the acidity of alkalinity of the mine drainage.

"This report is the second of a series dealing with electrical methods of underground communication nd signalling, and is a discussion of some of the factors involved in -applying radio in mines.A previous report2 described the results obtained by the use of the ""T.P.S."" of ground-conduction method of signalling, and outlined in a general way the requirements for a practical mine communication apparatus.The popularity of radio, the development work on new apparatus, a desire to render humanitarian service to entombed miners, and an endeavor to find new uses and applications for radio stimulated many persons to attempt the application of radio to mine rescue purposes. A number of experiments on underground reception from surface broadcast stations have been conducted by different experimenters in various parts of the country and the widespread interest in the subject is shown by the fact that these tests have been con¬ducted in many States, The Bureau of Mines has received information regarding, underground tests in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Michigan, Wyoming, Kentucky, New York, Connecticut, and in England, Germany, Italy, and Franc.From occasional press notices and illustrations in different papers it may appear that radio communication in mines and in tunnels being excavated is en established fact, and that the method is comparatively simple. [Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. Abraham Herbert, Asphalts and Allied Substances, 1918, 606 pp. has made one of the most detailed studies of these subjects in recent years, and his classification is used in the main. This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood crib fires in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. Gas concentrations, smoke particle characteristics, heat release rates, and ventilation rates were determined. These measurements form a data base for wood, which can be used with previous analyses for coal and future studies of other mine combustibles, to comprehend the potential hazards of these materials in underground mine fires. A knowledge of the combustion products emitted from these materials will benefit fire detection and control. Results show the changes in burning rate and heat release rate produced by different crib configurations and ventilation rates. Also included are the effects that the burning rate has on smoke characteristics and gas production.

Gypsum and gypsite, used in the manufacture of plaster and plaster products, have been mined from deposits near Acme, Hardeman County, Tex., for more than 30 years. The Certain-toed Products Corp., 120 East Lancaster St., Ardmore, Pa., operates the Acme, Tex., mine. Underground hauling was done with storage-battery and Diesel-electric-powered shuttle cars. Many mining companies and individuals have manifested interest in all types of equipment powered by Diesel or Diesel-electric units, as attested by the recent increase in use of Diesel-powered equipment in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The purpose of this paper is to describe the manner in which a storage battery-powered Joy Model 60D2 shuttle car was converted to Diesel-electric power. The conversion was made, at the instance of the operating company, by Stewart & Stevens on Services, 4801 Lemon Ave., Dallas, Tex. This is believed to be the only such converted shuttle car in use.

Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Footnote references serve to guide the reader to more detailed information.

This report presents the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-first semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. The 12 cities in which samples were collected have teen chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impractical to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country. The survey reveals that the motor gasoline which is being marketed in the United States this winter is decidedly more volatile than that sold a year ago. Samples from all cities show a decided improvement in volatility except those from Laramie, Wyo., which show a small decrease in volatility.

The utilization of secondary titanium was determined in a study by the Bureau of Mines, and a 10-year statistical table showing supply and distribution patterns is presented in this report. Over the total 10-year period, estimated scrap consumption is larger than estimated scrap supply. Trends from the estimated data indicate that titanium is in short supply and probably will continue to be in the future. Because of higher processing costs for recycle scrap, scrap will tend to migrate to the steel and aluminum industries and to ferrotitanium production and exports. Nonrecoverable losses of titanium metal during processing was determined to be a potential area for research.

"An overview of various physical and interfacial characterization methods for use in mineral processing is presented in this paper. The availability of a large number of characterization techniques and commercial instruments requires that the reliability and limitation of each be carefully examined. The choice of a method may depend upon the manner in which the information is to be used, for example in development of new processes, plant and process design, plant control, problem solving, etc. IntroductionThe behavior of particulate systems, in mineral processing and other applications, is primarily affected by the physical characteristics (size, shape, surface area, pore structure) of the particles and the nature of the different solid-fluid interfaces present. Mineral processing operations in general are either designed to modify and/or control physical and interfacial properties (grinding, classification, agglomeration, etc.) or are strongly influenced by them (flotation, flocculation, solid/liquid separation, etc.). Characterization of physical and interfacial properties should be an integral part of the development of new processes, plant and process design, and routine plant operation.Our purpose in preparing this article has been to present an overview of the current status of characterization, to point out areas of weakness, and to discuss the reliability and limitations of the various techniques, procedures, and instrumentation available. For more detailed discussion of methods, etc., the reader is referred to standard references.Sampling particulate solids.Sampling is a critical factor in any procedure for characterizing particulate materials — the reliability of characterization data is ultimately limited by the extent to which the sample used was truly represen¬tative of the population from which it was taken.Sampling from particulate solids involves two basic problems: (1) the selection of a random', unbiased sample and (2) choice of the appropriate sample size.The problem of sample selection involves the design of a sample collection procedure that ensures that every kind of particle in the population has the proper chance of being included in the sample without bias. Specific procedures such as the well-known cone-and-quarter technique have been developed and are discussed at length in the literature on particle characterization (Allen, 1981: Herdan, 1960: Gy, 1982)."

The consumption of gasoline in the United States varies materially with the seasons; during some of the summer months it exceeds the rate of production and in the other seasons the production of gasoline exceeds the consumption, The usual practice of the larger refiners is to store surplus stocks during the winter season in order to meet the heavy demands during the summer months. Researchers associated with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), are investigating injuries (fatal and nonfatal) attributed to water well drillers during well drilling activities. Injury data, obtained from various sources, suggest that many water well drillers are experiencing unnecessarily high insurance premiums and very avoidable citations or violations from the direct result of accidents, injuries, and fatalities occurring throughout the water well drilling industry. Expensive insurance premiums and unnecessary citations are the direct result of poor health and safety practices. Visits to numerous water well drilling sites were conducted by NIOSH personnel to characterize and identify the injury data collected and to provide inexpensive strategies to prevent, minimize, and eliminate safety and health issues associated with water well drilling activities.
