Data for the ternary phase diagram for the system 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane/water/2-propanol at 25° C have been measured. Experimental methods used are described, and the complete ternary phase diagram is presented. A simple example is given to review the use of the ternary diagram.

Laboratory equipment, which simulates abrasive impacts between steel and minerals that might be present during pneumatic transport of coal, was used by the Bureau of Mines to characterize the potential explosion hazard of such collisions in an atmosphere of fine coal dust, air, and methane. A variety of coal mine rock materials, including sandstone, limestone, and pyrite-bearing limestone, were impacted with specimens of pipeline steel. Tests were con-ducted in atmospheres containing zero to 6.4 vol-pct methane mixed with zero to 300 mg/l coal dust. Coal dust in air alone was not ignited by abrasive impacts, but additions of as little as 1 vol-pct methane to the coal dust and air mixture resulted in ignitions. Steel impacting against sandstone caused ignitions in mixtures of coal dust, air, and methane, and the probability for ignitions increased with an increase in methane. No ignitions occurred with impacts of steel on lime-stone or pyrite-bearing limestone, even when large showers of sparks were produced. Studies of the effect of tangential collision velocity showed that no ignitions of coal dust, air, and methane occurred below 900 fpm (4.57 m/sec). Ignitions in coal-air-methane mixtures were found to be caused by a hot friction-induced smear on the impacted rock at the impact site rather than by sparks. High-speed photography was used to verify this observation.

Samples of gas were obtained directly from the coalbed during drilling of horizontal and vertical boreholes in six different formations. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography for C1 to C5 hydrocarbons and for O2, N2, H2, He, and Co2. Methane in the gas varied from 63 to 99 percent; carbon dioxide from 0.1 to 15 percent. The CH4/CO2 ratio varied and showed no apparent correlation with age, rank, or bed. The majority of samples contained ethane, propane, and butane; hydrogen and helium were found in some samples. Oxygen and nitrogen were usually present, possibly as a result of air contamination. A more extensive sampling program would be necessary to establish relationship between the amount and composition of the gas in the coalbed and other factors.

Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

"INTRODUCTION Oxide manganese ore from the Sheep Mountain property was of intermediate grade (23.0 percent manganese) and contained silica as the major impurity. The deposit from which the ore was taken is known as the Sheep Mountain manganese property and is 8 miles west of Durkee, Oreg. Test work was done in the metallurgical laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, on representative samples cut from a 290-pound shipment of crushed ore submitted by the Oregon State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and reported to be typical of the Sheep Mountain deposit.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. "With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. The Bureau of Mines has recently collected two samples of crude oil from wells in the Greasewood Flat, area of northeastern Colorado. Sample 31310 was taken from the Continental Oi1 Co.'s well Briggs No. 1 which came in on September 27,7.931, with a maximum production of 940 barrels per day. Sample 31311 was taken from the Reiter-Foster Oil Co.'s well Ida Johnson No. 1 which came in on August 24, 1931 with a maximum production of approximately 1000 barrels per day. These two samples of crude oil are typical "intermediate base" crude oils according to the classification defined by Smith and Lane. The characteristics of these two samples, as shown by the Hempel analyses, indicate that they are almost identical. They have a very low sulphur content, and the residuum has a low carbon-residue content which would indicate that they are excellent crude oils for refining. Crude oils yielding a residuum which has a carbon-residue content of 4 per cent or less usually make good material for the manufacture of cylinder stocks. The pour points of the samples and the cloud test of the fractions obtained from the vacuum distillation indicate that the Greasewood Flat oil contains considerable wax. The high wax content would cause some difficulty in transmitting this oil through a pipe fine during extreme cold weather.

Provide the technology to remotely control a thin¬-seam continuous mining machine from a safe location hundreds of feet outby the working face in an underground room-and-pillar mine. Background and Approach Hard-wired or radio remote control of continuous mining machine has been commercially available since the early 1970's. This type of remote control, in low and high coal seams, situates the machine operator offboard, but within direct view of the underground coal face, Although positioned under supported roof, the operator can still be exposed to face area hazards that include roof-rib falls, dust, methane explosions, and equipment congestion. The U.S. Bureau of Mines approach has been to put the operator into a protected compartment at a location away from the working face. Since 1979, the Bureau has investigated innovative methods to better protect face area workers in under¬ground room-and-pillar mines. In 1989, the Bureau demonstrated an offboard, computer-based remote con¬trol system in a West Virginia highwall mining operation that stationed the operator hundreds of feet away from the working face. In late 1992, much of this technology, plus improvements, Was used to demonstrate, on the surface, how a thin-scam continuous mining machine could be remotely controlled 200 feet from the machine in a 36-inch working height.

Provide a means of evaluating the in place structural properties of coal seams and coal measure rocks in advance of mining. Approach Develop a sonic logging probe for use in dry wells, a condition common to shallow wells and semi-arid coal regions. How It Works The Bureaus' sonic probe differs from conventional sonic probes because it does not require fluid in the well to couple sonic vibrations to the drill hole wall. A self-contained hydraulic system forces pistons containing the measurement transducers against the wall and clamps them in position until the sonic waveform information has been recorded. The pistons are then retracted and the probe is raised or lowered in the well as required. In the clamped position, the piezoceramic transmitter emits a sonic pulse which travels along the drill hole wall and is detected at the receivers in the form of compressional (P) and shear (S) wave motion. The receivers are designed to be sensitive to either the (P) wave or (S) wave motion as determined by the operator so that discrimination between the two wave types is improved by comparison of the respective output channels, and the travel time between transmitter and detectors can be accurately determined. Use of two receiver stations eliminates errors in timing of pulse travel because of electronic delays inherent in the probe.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has estimated the potential availability of copper from 204 mines and deposits in market economy countries (MEC's). The evaluated properties have demonstrated resources totaling 436.4 million metric tons of contained copper and account for 90% of the Bureau of Mimes reserve base for copper in market economy countries. Total recoverable MEC copper resources are 340.8 million metric tons, 69% of which is from producing mines and 31% from nonproducing mines and deposits. Chile had the lowest estimated average total cost from producing mines of W.48 per pound of recoverable copper at a 0% discounted cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), with estimated average total costs ranging from $0.40 to $0.81 per pound. The estimated average total cost of production, per pound of copper, for producing mines in the United States amounts to $0.57 in January 1988 dollars at a Wo DCFROR, with estimated total costs ranging from $0.36 to $0.85 per pound. In both real and nominal terms, the United States has, on average, significantly lowered its copper production costs since 1981. Rationalization of the industry and significant increases in productivity have made a strong improvement in the competitiveness of the U.S. copper industry to the extent that the United States should no longer be considered as a marginal producer of copper.

Montana's coal reserves are estimated to be more than 120 billion tons, 24.6 percent of U.S. reserves. Montana's reserves are the largest in the nation. Coal fields are located throughout the state, primarily east of the Continental Divide. Three of the state's 17 coal fields have producing mines. Coal resources range from lignite to high volatile bituminous; however, most of the coal currently mined is subbituminous. Although Lewis and Clark mentioned the presence of coal along the banks of the Missouri River in Montana in 1805, the first major mine was not opened until 1867, at Chestnut, Montana, near Bozeman. The mine at Chestnut served Fort Ellis until the mine was bought by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883. By 1900, underground coal mining had developed throughout the state, primarily to supply fuel to the railroads. In the 1920s, large-scale surface mining began in Colstrip to fuel railroad steam engines. Currently, all coal mined in the state is produced from surface mines. The Office of Surface Mining granted the Montana regulatory program conditional approval April 1, 1980, followed by final approval February 1 1,1982. Montana's Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved November24,1980, and its emergency program was approved August 18, 1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was approved May 8, 1981.

The U.S., Australian, and United Kingdom coal and the Canadian hard rock mining industries have long recognized the significance of high horizontal stresses as a factor affecting the stability of roof and rib conditions in underground mines. Recently, a growing segment of the U.S. underground stone mining industry has also begun to recognize that horizontal stresses occur in some of its more than 90 mines. Considering the typically high strength and massive nature of limestone, this fact is a revelation in itself. High horizontal stresses produce extensive and sudden rock failures and, in some cases, resulted in injuries to mine workers. Through the years diverse control strategies have been proposed and experimented with. Reorientation of mine entries to reduce stress concentrations have proven successful and are widely accepted in practice. Other solutions, like rock reinforcement, are poorly understood and less accepted in practice. It is the purpose of this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study to develop a better fundamental understanding of these ground control strategies under high horizontal stress conditions through a series of field and laboratory studies. To this end a design technique is presented which provides stone miners with a method for making stability assessments. The consequences of widening rooms, changing geology and horizontal stresses, and different rock bolts on roof beam failures are discussed.

Network analysis of mine ventilation systems is not new, having been traced back to 1854. A Committee Report (1970) has also reported the extensive work done in this respect in the United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, United States, and other countries. Wang, et al (1970) developed a computer program which is an improvement over the earlier one developed by Wang et al (1967). The program has been recently modified and extended to include methane emission features by Owili-Eger (1973). This computer program incorporates all the novel features of the earlier programs. These include the capabilities of mesh selection, free splitting, internal or external fans, natural ventilation pressure and fixed quantity branches. The program is written in Fortran IV and, in effect, is an experimental mine in which many ideas can be tried out. The computer produces, besides the input data and certain computational data, the quantities and head losses in the branches, the head losses to be adjusted in the fixed quantity branches and the fan operating point. The last named program, hereafter to be referred to as the PSU/MVS, is presented in Appendix I. The application of this program is demonstrated in this manual through a series of selected examples. Application of the methane generator program is not included here as a detailed report on the subject is available elsewhere (Ramani et al, 1975).

Sodium-aluminum and calcium-aluminum silicates are important rock-forming minerals. While many of them are of only theoretical interest, several are of practical importance--as ceramic raw materials and as potential future sources of aluminum. Heretofore, thermodynamic data for these minerals were incomplete; and in many instances missing data were difficult to estimate reliably. This has seriously hampered thermodynamic calculations pertaining both to the natural formations of these minerals and to their decomposition in sintering and fluxing reactions. This paper reports the results of the Federal Bureau of Mines measurements of low-temperature heat capacities of four crystalline silicate minerals--dehydrated analcite (NaAlSi2O6), hexagonal anorthite (CaA12 Si208), lawsonite (Ca2Al2Si2080?2H20), and leonhardite (Ca2Al4Si8C24?7H2O). It augments previous similar measurements of related minerals, which were summarized recently.4 The measured heat-capacity data were used to derive entropy values for the four minerals at 298.15° K. Some relations between these entropy values and those of other similar minerals were discussed. These relations illustrate the difficulty of estimating entropy values of tertiary (or higher) silicates.

Demand for arsenic trioxide dropped markedly during 1983, primarily as a result of a 27% reduction in cotton planting. As an oversupply of arsenic trioxide developed, prices declined for both domestic and imported material. Domestic Data Coverage.-Commercial-grade arsenic trioxide and arsenic metal were produced by only one U.S. company, which voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines. To prevent disclosure of proprietary data, the production data have been withheld.

Provide an environmentally compatible means of producing lead from galena concentrates that replaces the current high-temperature pyrometallurgical primary lead smelting process and supplies pure lead metal within present and proposed Environmental Protection Agency (FPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lead emission standards. Approach The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an energy efficient and pollution-free leach-electrowinning method for use in recovering pure lead metal and byproducts from lead sulfide concentrates.
