THIS CHAPTER is new to the Minerals Yearbook and will appear regularly hereafter. Its purpose is to present statistics that reflect technologic trends in the minerals and metals industries (except fuels). Much useful information has been collected annually through the Bureau of Mines mineral commodity and employment and injuries canvasses. However, these data must be supplemented by further data to permit evaluation of the type, direction, and rate of technologic change, which are vitally important in long-term mineral planning. In addition to, and fully as important as, expanding the available data is the need to ascertain that the various items collected are obtained from identical reporting units, to enable direct comparisons to be made.

The Bureau of Mines has been carrying on an extensive diamond- drilling program during the past 7 years on deposits of strategic and critical minerals . Often the project reports and the drill-hole logs describe the findings only in terms of the mineral being sought at the time . Then , too , results may not always be interpreted alike by several mining engineers , and the cores therefore provide a permanent tangible record to complement the project reports . The cores from projects in the eastern divisions are being stored at the Mount Weather Testing Adit . Core from a representative hole ( or skeletonized sections from several holes , if these are more representative ) is selected at each project and shipped to Mount Weather for permanent storage . At the Testing Adit an underground room was prepared and storage racks were installed . Wooden core trays designed to accommodate cores of various sizes were purchased .

Reduce the exposure of diesel vehicle operators to diesel exhaust generated during mucking in deadend drifts. Approach Direct the diesel engine exhaust upward and rearward thereby using the thermal buoyancy of the hot exhaust to form a layer at the roof, above the breathing zone of the vehicle operator. Modifying the Exhaust Outlets Diesel front-end loaders used in nocoal mines to remove blasted ore usually operate in entries open only at one end to cross cut ventilation. These deadend drifts are not usually ventilated with the use of auxiliary fans and vent tubing because of frequent blasting. The existing ventilation, therefore, is usually poor, and a diesel engine operating in such a drift emits exhaust which is not immediately swept away from the operator. On most load machines, the diesel engine's exhaust outlet is located near the floor and directed downward or to the side, so that when the hot exhaust is emitted, it mixes with the mine air as it rises into the vehicle operator's breathing zone. In this way, a uniform concentration of diesel exhaust forms around the operator.

Time-domain reflectometry has long been an accepted and used method for locating electrical faults in electrical cables. The process has, however, required the use of equipment that is somewhat complex and difficult to use. The skill level needed to operate such equipment is high. Therefore, the use of the time-domain reflectometry process has been limited to selected locations and controlled environments. The process, however, has great potential for mine system applications. The ability to locate and repair trailing power cable without removing it from the mine would result in great savings in cost and employee-hours. Therefore, an automatic microprocessor-controlled time- domain reflectometry system was developed to reduce process complexity and skill level needed to operate the unit. The theory of operations is discussed along with the computer analogies used in the unit. The present unit capabilities are presented and future areas of application and research are discussed.

The theoretical relationships that are used to calculate in situ rock stress magnitudes and directions from borehole deformation data obtained during overcoring are based on the assumption that the rock is a linearly elastic material. Strictly speaking, this assumption is not valid in any rock. Thus, investigators using overcoring techniques must either accept various degrees of nonlinearity and the associated inaccuracies or use core testing techniques that address the problem and compensate for elastic nonlinearity. Previously developed test procedures for stress-relief overcores partially correct for nonlinearity. This Bureau of Mines paper describes a test procedure that completely corrects for elastic nonlinearity in stress-relief overcores.

Improve the safety and comfort of operators of large mining equipment. Approach Develop an improved driver restraint system that is easy to use, reliable, and cost-effective, while providing increased protection in the event of a collision or rollover. The Novel Restraint System There are several problems associated with conventional lap-belt type restraint systems. Among these are: restriction of movement, lack of comfort, and fear of entrapment. Standard seatbelts become dirty and oily from lying on the vehicle cab floor and can ruin a driver's clothes. Some haulage equipment may not even have seatbelts available to drivers since they are sometimes removed during maintenance activities or as a result of vandalism. Recognizing a need to address such problems by providing a more acceptable means of driver restraint, the Bureau of Mines designed and fabricated a novel vest-type restraint system. The vest is designed to be worn during a driver's 8-hour shift and would be issued much like safety glasses, hard hats and safety shoes, thus becoming part of the operator's individual protective equipment and assuring that each vehicle has a restraint system when in operation. "The General Leasing Law, which provides for the leasing of deposits of coal, oil, oil shale, gas, phosphate, and sodium in public lands, was approved February 25, 1920.One of the outstanding features of this legislation is the fact that it opens for prospecting and exploitation lands and deposits which have been withdrawn from public use, some of them for several years, pending enactment of legislation better fitted to control the mining and utilization of the particular mineral deposits referred to. These lands are not only made available to the public, but they are opened up under a system which defines better than was ever done in the pas the rights which may be acquired under it.The oil operator, for example, under this legislation will know definitely the extent of the rights he has acquired, as well as the legal conditions under which his expensive drilling and other work of exploration are to be conducted. No longer will he be harassed by the possibility that while he is spending his capital in drilling operations in an effort to make a discovery of oil, his legal rights be contested, in which event the superiority of his claim can only be upheld -- if at all -- after long and expensive litigation. By the same token the coal operator will now be free from the embarrassing restrictions of the old coal-land laws respecting the amount of such land which may be purchased by one person.At the same time that these advantages are being enjoyed by the operators, the public will be guarded against wasteful methods of drilling and mining the oil and gas, and coal deposits, and the other mineral substances enumerated in the act, to the end that these products of Nature, which can not be replaced, may be utilized with a minimum of loss."

Mining machine cabs were built to comfortably fit 90 percent of adult American males, and have controls that allow fast natural reactions during emergencies. These cabs and controls also fit 40 percent of the adult female population in the United States. The operators are also positioned for good visibility and for protection from roofing and ribbing hazards. Two basic designs were developed, one for seam heights on the order of 4 feet I and the second for seam heights near 8 feet. The sitting position of the largest person within the sample size group (termed a "95th percentile man") determined the basic cab shapes. The size of different parts of the human body and how they work together I established other design features of the cab. Areas of visibility, limits of operator movement, comfortable seating angles, etc., were carefully identified for the largest and the smallest persons within the sample size group. Placement of controls was based on these findings. The controls are designed and placed to allow operation with minimum physical strain and fatigue. See chart on other side of sheet.

Methane can be a significant hazard in coal mine longwalling operations and extensive methane mitigation techniques are employed by coal mine operators. Reservoir modeling techniques are used to better understand the liberation and migration of methane from the surrounding rocks towards the mine ventilation system. The caved rock behind the advancing longwall face, known as the gob, can contain high void ratios, providing high permeability flow paths to the methane. The gob is progressively compacted by the weight of the overburden, resulting in a reduction in the void ratio and associated permeability. Estimating the permeability distribution within the gob poses challenges due to its complexity. The authors have developed a new methodology to determine both horizontal and vertical variations in the permeability of the gob. Variations of the permeability in the vertical direction are based on a model of caving and block rotation, which considers the effect of block dimensions and fall height on the void ratio. Gob compaction by the overburden and associated permeability changes are determined from a three-dimensional geo-mechanical model which simulates the gob as a strain hardening granular material. The resulting three-dimensional permeability distribution in the gob is then transferred to a reservoir model. The paper demonstrates the application of the method and shows that reasonable results are obtained when compared to empirical experience and measurements.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. "Previous Work:As outlined in previous papers* ond clays for graphite crucibles have been tested at the plants of the Detroit Lubricator Co., and the Detroit Copper and Brass Rolling Mills, Detroit, Mich.These tests indicated that there were two American clays (Missouri pot clay and Illinois kaolin) that tested better than the Klingenberg (German) clay. Dorset (English) ball clay was tenth in the list.Making the Crucibles:After it had been determined that American clays can be used successfully in graphite crucible manufacture and service, the next step in the investigation was to determine the value of American graphites as compared to the foreign, These final tests were carried out at the plant of the Detroit Lubricator Co., through the courtesy of Mr. G. B. Duffield. The crucibles, as previously. were made at the plant of the Vesuvius Crucible Co., Swissvale, Penna., from a formula compiled by the Bureau of Mines and under the supervision of Bureau engineers.The graphites to be tested were given an initial to indicate their source. The number of crucibles made and shipped are set forth in Table 1."

"The present article is the second of a series of papers dealing with the dissolution of copper minerals in various reagents. Work done on the problem has been carried out at the Southwest Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Department of Mining and Metallurgy, University of Arizona. The first paper4 dealt with the dissolution of azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, and tenorite. Preceding articles5 have also dealt with other factors involved in the leaching of copper ores.Cuprite (Cu20) is usually considered as a mineral which is not adaptable to sulphuric acid leaching. Hofman,6 in describing leaching by sulphuric acid, states: ""Cuprite is decomposed into CuO and Cu; and ore carrying cuprite has to be oxidized (weathering, roasting) before treatment."" Greenawalt7 says: ""When acted upon by dilute sulphuric acid, it is partly reduced to metallic copper and partly oxidized into copper sulphate. When heated with strong acid it is entirely oxidized to sulphate."" Work to be described in this article was undertaken to ascertain the conditions whereby all the copper in cuprite could be converted into the soluble sulphate."

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has classified diesel exhaust as a potential human carcinogen. Though standards for diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the work place have not been established, concern for the health of miners is prompting mine operators to consider methods for reducing worker exposure to diesel exhaust. Approach One of many methods for reducing DPM being investigated by the Bureau of Mines is the use of additives in diesel fuel to improve combustion. Research Results Three fuel additives have been tested in Caterpillar and Deutz diesel engines which are similar to types used in underground mines. One iron-based additive containing ferrous picrate had no effect on emissions. A second iron-based additive containing ferrocene reduced DPM between 5 and 45 pet depending on engine operating conditions. The 37-pct reduction for an 8-minute duty cycle, which includes a wide range of transient loads and speeds, is considered to represent in-mine performance.

The advancement of high-temperature drilling fluid technology for application in geothermal environments is part of the Bureau of Mines program for more efficient development of our Nation's energy resources. The bentonite constituent of water-base drilling fluids is sensitive to destabilization by high-temperature and salinity. A substitute material for bentonite, phosphate slime, which is reported to be saline resistant, was considered. These studies show that spray-dried slime suspensions have more favorable rheological behavior, but poorer filtration properties, as compared with bentonite suspensions.

Fiji has been an independent country within the British Commonwealth of Nations since 1970. It consists of an archipelago of more than 300 islands ranging from tiny coral atolls, cays, and rugged coral limestone islets, to the larger mountainous islands of Kandavu, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu of volcanic origin. The islands of Fiji straddle the 1800 meridian about 1,800 kilometers south of the Equator in the part of the southern Pacific Ocean known as Melanesia. The production of gold and silver from the Emperor Mine at Vatukoula on the island of Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji, remained Fiji's only metallic mineral producer. Mining began at the Vatukoula site in 1933, producing 124 million troy ounces of gold and 147 thousand troy ounces of silver by yearend 1985.

Develop an improved downhole geophone system with enhanced signal/noise ratio for collecting cross-hole seismic data used in tomographic reconstructions. Background The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in the use of cross-hole seismic tomography for detecting and monitoring leach solution flow during in situ mining. This technique requires the use of a downhole seismic energy source in one borehole and a downhole wall-locking receiver (geophone) in another borehole separated from the first by the region to be investigated. Bureau research personnel chose a commercially available air gun for use as the downhole seismic energy source. Unfortunately, commercially available downhole wall-locking geophones that the Bureau tested were difficult to operate in the field, often unreliable and generally inadequate in terms of their signal/noise ratio. Therefore, research personnel began to experiment with an alternative down-hole geophone design that could be used to collect adequate data in a wide variety of borehole and cross-hole field situations. Approach An attractive alternative geophone design would be one that would incorporate a pneumatically operated wall-locking system. As an integral part of the Bureau's existing field system, a portable, high- pressure/low-volume air compressor would have sufficient capacity to operate the air gun as well as several small high-pressure pneumatic linear actuators. This approach was the simplest and most compatible with the research activities being conducted at the site.

Determine what diameter piping is necessary to obtain sufficient water flow to spray nozzles used for dust suppression. Approach A simplified, diagrammatic method of calculating the flow of water through a proposed system consisting of a supply line and two banks of spray nuzzles is outlined. How It Works The pressure versus flowrate of the supply at the tapping point must be known or measured. The supply curve of typical city water at a 1 ¼ -inch pipe outlet is shown by the lowest curve in Figure 1. A supply curve for a typical pump fed from an open sump is shown by the middle curve. The combination of these, the supply curve of a pump fed by the city water supply is shown by adding the lower two curves to get the upper curve. A pump supply curve showing flowrate versus pressure is usually supplied by the manufacturer. The water supply line flow curve can be determined by measuring the time required to fill a 55 gallon barrel at various valve settings to determine flow, and by measuring corresponding pressures at the valve with a gauge.

Dense-medium cyclone tests in 4-and 8-inch-diameter units have shown the ability of cyclones to make sharp separations down to 100 mesh when washing coals of a finer top size than normally fed to dense-medium cyclones. The reduced top size of the feed apparently allows the finer size particles to report to the proper product by reducing the effect of very coarse particles in the congested separation zone of the dense-medium cyclone.

TECHNOLOGY is best nurtured by a sympathetic climate that is a composite of many factors. Necessity is a highly motivating factor as illustrated by the abnormal surge of technologic development curing wartime. Other factors include appropriate timing, economic pressures, available personnel, and in some instances, legislative action. Problems of recent concern to mining technology have been the quality and quantity of available technical personnel and the possibilities of restrictive legislation. The quality and quantity of technically trained personnel may be inadequate to meet the rapidly increasing complexity of modern technology coupled with the growing demand for qualified personnel. The question of appropriate training was a subject for debate.2 The curriculum and methods of teaching have changed. Questions have been raised on the relationship of scientist and engineer, interdisciplinary versus specialized curriculum, undergraduate versus graduate training, and the place of the smaller schools versus the large university-research complexes that have developed at some universities. Various aspects of the subject of engineering education for the mining industry were discussed at the meeting on Mining and Mineral Engineering Manpower at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, November 18-19, 1963. Meanwhile, the trend toward interdisciplinary training gathers momentum as illustrated by the establishment of the School of Engineering Science at Johns Hopkins, the Schools of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia, Princeton, and Yale, the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics at Harvard and, more recently, the School of Engineering Science at Florida State University which cuts across the conventional areas of civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering.

Variations between laboratories on the silica and alumina content of calcined kyanite led to this Bureau of Mines study of the extent and nature of the differences. In particular, Bureau scientists hoped the study would lead to correction of the causes of the dissimilarities. A sample of calcined Kenya kyanite was analyzed by seven different laboratories familiar with silicate analysis. The compiled data indicated differences originating from lack of recovery of silica after two acidic dehydrations, from high alumina caused by several factors, from loss or gain of iron during sample fusion, and from indifference regarding the accurate determination of minor constituents.
