This work evaluates the deformation behaviour, at warm working temperatures, of green particle-reinforced aluminium composites produced by powder blending in a high-energy ball mill. The work focuses on metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 10 or 15 vol.% SiC and metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 5 or 10 vol.% Al2O3. Three batches for each powder were blended and powder properties such as particle size distribution (PSD) and shape were consistent after blending. It was observed that a more uniform distribution of the reinforcement phase in the aluminium alloy matrix was achieved in 2124-Al/Al2O3 than in 2124- Al/SiC composites. The powders (unreinforced 2124-Al and blended) were initially over-aged at 350°C for 2 hours to reverse any natural ageing that may have occurred prior to use. The over-ageing was incorporated to improve compressibility of the powders with the aim of achieving green compacts with higher integrity. Uniaxial compression tests performed at ambient temperature on a Gleeble® 3500 thermomechanical simulator were unsuccessful as the green compacts fragmented. Engineering stress-strain curves showed that green compacts of unreinforced 2124-Al, 10%SiC MMC and 5%Al2O3 MMNC deformed in a similar manner at ambient temperature and had the same compressive fracture stress of approximately 170 MPa. When the deformation temperature was increased from ambient to warm working temperatures (170–280°C) it was observed that electrical resistance heating (the heating mode of the Gleeble®) of unreinforced Al alloy, MMC and MMNC green compacts did not occur. This was attributed to the high electrical conductivity of aluminium, which resulted in poor heat generation due to the low electrical resistance in the samples. It was presumed that the small sample size (d=8 mm, h=12 mm) also caused rapid heat loss. After further experimentation, the green compacts were heated successfully by insulating the samples to retain heat. It was found that at 280°C, increasing the soaking time from 6 to 20 minutes decreased flow stress and improved plastic flow in the 2124-Al/10%SiC green compact.

The pump is the heart of most industrial and mining plants, providing the energy to separate valuable minerals from process feed. The actual effect of the pump, both in terms of production costs and overall process efficiency, is often assumed or misunderstood by engineers due to insufficient pump performance data. Pump performance can be understood and corrected, where required, through continuous performance monitoring, leading to dramatic improvements in both pump life cycle costs and system efficiencies. The performance of every pumping application is subject to variation and the main contributing factors are as follows: ?Unavoidable deviations from pump supplier curves ?Pump wear ?Pump curve derating factors for slurry pumping ?System curve variation ?Deviation from basic principles of centrifugal pump operation. These are discussed in detail through case studies and the author?s personal experiences. This paper shows ways to minimize the effect of these variations, thereby reducing performance loss and preventing damage to the pump. The paper discusses the benefits of efficient pump operation, the requirements of pump performance monitoring, and its practical application to pump operation in the slurry and water environments. The cost of remedial actions is explored and compared against the savings in both power and plant reliability, resulting in a reduced life cycle cost of the pump.

The presence of impurities such as Se and Te in copper sulfate leach solutions can have a detrimental effect on electrowinning efficiency. These elements can be removed from the solution by precipitation; sulfurous acid is commonly used as a precipitation reagent, while studies have also reported improved precipitation with the addition of metallic copper. This paper aimed to determine the effect of conditions used during the solution purification step on the characteristics of the precipitates that formed. Precipitation tests were performed in a batch reactor with copper sulfate leach solutions obtained from the base metal refinery of a platinum group metal producer. The effects of agitation rate (250 and 500 rpm), SO2 flow rate (4.4 and 5.8 mL/min.L), temperature (65 and 95°C) and metallic copper powder addition (0, 1 and 2 g/L) on the characteristics of the precipitates formed during the tests were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The major phases detected in the precipitates formed when using SO2 as the only precipitation reagent were elemental Se and Cu2Se. The introduction of copper powder led to the production of different sulfide phases for the experiments conducted at 65°C irrespective of the values of the other reaction parameters. At 95°C, Cu crystals, Cu2O and tiny inclusions of Cu2(Se,Te) were the prominent phases noticed in the precipitates produced from all the tests conducted with copper powder as precipitation enhancing reagent. "Parts manufactured through power metallurgy (PM) typically contain pores that can be detrimental to the final mechanical properties. This paper explores the merits of 3D X-ray computed tomography over traditional microscopy for the characterization of the evolution of porosity in metal injection moulding (MIM) and direct powder rolling (DPR) products. 17-4 PH stainless steel (as-moulded, as-debound and sintered) dog-bone samples produced via MIM and Ti-HDH strips (as-rolled and sintered) produced via DPR and were analysed for porosity. 3D microfocus X-ray tomography (XCT) analysis on specimens from both processes revealed spatial variations in densities and the existence of characteristic moulding and roll compaction defects in agreement with traditional microscopic microstructural analysis. It was concluded that micro-focus XCT scanning can be used to study MIM and DPR parts for the characterization of the amount, position and distribution of porosity and other defects. However, the majority of the sub-micron sized pores could not be clearly resolved even at the highest possible instrument resolution. Higher-resolution scans such as nano-focus XCT could be utilized in order to fully study the porosity in MIM and DPR parts. IntroductionMetal injection moulding (MIM) is a novel process, which combines the advantages of powder metallurgy (PM) and plastic injection moulding. MIM has found widespread applications in the cost-effective production of high-sintered density small parts with complicated shapes and mechanical properties equivalent to those of wrought materials (German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013). There are four basic processing steps involved in MIM, namely; feedstock preparation, injection moulding, debinding and sintering. These steps are discussed in greater detail elsewhere (Machaka, Seerane and Chikwanda, 2014; German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013).Feedstock preparation involves mixing metal powder with a carefully selected composition of polymeric binder materials at a specific temperature. The feedstock is then granulated and injected into a predefined mould die with the desired shape. The part produced during the moulding step is referred to as a ‘green’ component. The green component typically contains no porosity since the spaces between adjacent powder particles are readily filled with the binder materials (German and Bose, 1977; Li, Li and Khalil, 2007). Debinding is the systemic removal of the binder components by chemical, catalytic, or/and thermal means while maintaining the shape of the component. The part produced after the debinding step is referred to as a ‘brown’ component. Debinding is known to be the source of porosity in brown components (Ji et al., 2001; Tsai and Cen, 1995). Finally, the brown debound part is sintered to full or nearfull density (Sotomayor, Varez and Levenfeld, 2010). The sintering step and associated densification closes up the majority of the pores. Sintered MIM parts are typically sintered to high density (95–99%) and retain an irreducible amount of residual porosity (Barriere, Liu and Gelin, 2003; German, 1990)."

As a Demand Side Management (DSM) Project, money was granted for the procurement and installation of a 3-Chamber Pipe Feeder System (3-CPFS) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Moab Khotsong Mine in the Vaal River Area, Orkney. The first submission was done to ESKOM in December 2002 and the contract was signed in September 2006 at a cost of R 57-million with an envisaged reduction in power of 7 Megawatt per month based on a 90% utilization factor. The project was finally commissioned in December 2008. The technology is not new, but the intent of the paper is to share with others the experience gained by using the technology in a deep-level mine in order to reduce overall power consumption.

The near-surface wave attenuation factor k (kappa), which describes the attenuation of seismic waves with distance in the upper 1–3 km of the Earth, was determined for the Far West Rand gold mining area using seismic data recorded by station Parys (PRYS) of the South African National Seismograph Network. Twenty micro-events in the magnitude range 0.7 ? ML ? 1.8 for the period 1 July to 15 November 2015 were analysed. For the analysis a 10-second window for the S phase portion of the vertical component seismogram was selected. The result was an average k = 0.048 ± 0.014 s, which is much higher than for a stable continental region where k = 0.006 s. This is because the assumed Brune source model is inappropriate for describing mining-related events that often have moment tensors with a volumetric (implosive) component. The average k was calculated to be 0.098 ± 0.038 s for explosions of a similar magnitude. This higher value derived for mining-related k may be employed as a means of correcting the Brune source spectrum to calculate seismic moment as well as corner frequency for events in the mining areas of South Africa.

Discussion: A. Hazell (Associate Member) and T. J. Kotze (Graduate Member): The authors must be congratulated on the development of a versatile computer programme for determining the stresses and displacements resulting from mining operations. As a design tool it will no doubt take its rightful place together with the analogue computer. Union Corporation made use of this digital computer programme whilst still in its development stage to determine the stress distributions which were causing the unexpected failure of the Marievale sub-incline shaft. Two features arising from this investigation may be of interest to members, namely: A. The solution to the problem of stabilizing a rectangular inclined shaft, which turned out to be contrary to accepted mining practice, and B. A comparison between the results obtained with the pure digital system and the analogue computer. A. The shaft is nine ft high and 20 ft wide, dipping at 9° to the horizontal and crossing the bedding planes. Fig. 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 is a section of the sub-incline shaft pillar area showing the relative positions of the shaft and reef as well as their respective dips. The deepest point in the shaft is 3 300 ft below surface and the requirement of a stress free ground surface may not be satisfied. It also means that the original gravitational stresses are low. A 900 ft wide pillar was left to protect the bottom section of the shaft, the top section being understoped years ago. Extraction of the pillar was started at the beginning of last year, mining operations being carried out in the accepted manner, starting beneath the shaft and mining outwards. The approach did, however, turn out to be the wrong one, because failure of the shaft was noticed soon afterwards. Even small movements were serious in this case due to the low clearance between the skips and the shaft supports. During October, 1968, failure between benchmarks 8 and 10 (see Fig. 1) became so excessive that hoisting speeds had to be reduced. Failure continued to occur and, by the end of March, 1969, failure had propagated up the shaft as far as benchmark 7, and down as far as benchmark 12. As this shaft had a tight hoisting schedule it was imperative that a quick solution be found to arrest the failure.

As a national facility, Mintek?s brief is to conduct high calibre research that allows the most effective utilization of South African resources. The research takes two different forms, with the efforts being directed at both high-risk endeavours that may lead to the development or adoption of new technologies or the reapplication of technologies to potential new operations. Starting in the 80s Mintek began developing a process to upgrade the UG2 ore and invested heavily in projects, equipment and people to service the industry. Some of the highlights of that work that has been conducted here include: ?Development of a milling and flotation process for UG2 ores ?Development of the ?Mintek Process? for maximizing PGM recovery for UG2 ores ?Conversion of the UG2 milling circuits to open circuit ?Development of a robust pilot plant facility for use in plant design studies ?Use of dense media as a waste rejection option ?Use of attritioners in flotation circuits. More recently, and with the future in mind, the following processes are being researched, some of which have already been commercially applied: ?Development of a flowsheet for Platreef ores ?Use of optical sorting technology for upgrading platinum ores ?Use of a mini-plant for reagent optimization studies. Each of the highlights listed above will be discussed in the paper.

Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1.1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1.4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

1. Book review • World mineral statistics 1974 to 1978. Production: Exports: Imports. London, H.M.S.O., Institute of Geological Sciences, 1980. (Reviewer: R. P. King) This edition is the third in a regular series prepared by the Institute of Geological Sciences. It is a useful compilation of statistics on the production, export, and import of fifty-eight different mineral commodities. Each mineral is listed by country, and a table is provided for the annual production, the annual imports, and the annual exports for each commodity included. However, some commodities are treated in considerably more detail; for example, aluminium and bauxite have tables under the following headings: Production of Bauxite, Production of Alumina, Production of Primary Aluminium, Exports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium, Imports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium. The information presented is the latest official information available from primary sources; the compilers have not relied on data from secondary compilations. This publication will be of considerable assistance to all who are concerned with the trading of mineral commodities and their production.

In this research, in order to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV)(as vibration indicator) caused by blasting projects in the excavations of the Karoun III power plant and dam, three techniques including statistical, empirical, and neural network were used and their results were interpreted and compared. First, multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) was used as statistical approach. Next, PPV was predicted using some widely used empirical models. Lastly, an artificial neural network was used. In the ANN model, maximum charge per delay, total charge per round, distance from blast site, direction of firing, blasthole length, number of blastholes, total delay in milliseconds, number of delay intervals, and average specific charge were taken into consideration as input parameters and consequently the PPV as output parameter. The results of the techniques were interpreted from two points of view. Firstly, the correlation between the observed data and predicted ones, secondly the total error between observed data and predicted ones. The MVRA had a satisfactory correlation but its error of estimation was comparatively very high. The empirical model had reliable correlation and a small error of estimation; in total the results of empirical method were more reliable than those of MVRA. Generally, the ANN approach showed very high correlation and a very small error. The results of this research indicated that the ANN model is the best predicting model for PPV in comparison with other approaches.

The primary focus of management today is safety, or preventing negative, generally irreversible, events of acute duration. The outcomes of safety-related events are usually visible and can evoke strong emotions if the results are severe. Experts now see that occupational illness and disease also result in significant emotional and financial toll to workers, their families and communities, and to their employers. Effective health and safety management must include acknowledging the importance of occupational health hazards and the proportionate application of resources to address those issues. Improvement in workplace conditions and decrease or elimination of illness and disability are due to actions within the workplace and result from the implementation of risk prevention and control measures. However, success may only be visible months or years later and may require interventions that have to be maintained over prolonged periods. This demands continuous, co-ordinated effort to ensure sustainability of diverse occupational health programmes and the relevant management systems. Too often occupational health is not seen as being part of the general management of business, but rather the function of a medical practitioner somewhere off site in a clinic. Integration of occupational health management systems with other management systems within an organization is essential for its success.

"Brick manufacturers supply a variety of uniquely coloured facebricks to the building industry, which requires a high level of colour consistency in the products. Colour variation in bricks is influenced by the composition and consistency of the white clay raw material. By blending varieties of naturally occurring white clay the manufacturers produce a unique range of facebrick products. Homogeneity of the white clay raw materials mined at Lenasia is crucial for producing bricks of consistent colour. Geostatistical investigations of the major element distributions (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and K2O) and loss on ignition (LoI) were conducted. An analysis of the spatial continuity of these variables followed by ordinary kriging indicated that the upper white clay layer at Lenasia is richer in K2O and Fe2O3 than the lower layer. Consistency in the colour of facebricks depends critically on careful management of the variability in the K2O and Fe2O3 content of the clays. The geostatistical approach to understanding the distribution of elements in the clay allows miners to construct clay stockpiles of consistent quality for feeding the brick-making process. Geostatistical investigation of the chemical contents in other clay domains within the deposit is recommended, and could be extended to all facebrick manufacturers to assist in improving the colour consistency of their products. IntroductionMost clay in South Africa is used in the manufacturing of tiles, pipes, bricks, whiteware, refractories, and pottery. Bricks are manufactured from a wide variety of clay types, the behaviour of which during firing depends critically on the the clay mineralogy and chemical composition, but this relationship not well understood (Stein, 1982). The variety among clay deposits is related to the different processes of formation (Deer, Howie, and Zussman, 1992). The geochemical composition of the clay can vary between layers and within the same layer in an individual deposit (Lurie, 1984). The properties of clay minerals are determined by their structures and the different combinations of silicate layers, cations, and hydroxyl ions (Kingery, Bowen, and Uhlmann, 1976). South African clays can be classified as either kaolinite or montmorillonite and are seldom found in a pure form (Lurie, 1984). Different clay minerals affect the drying, forming, firing behaviour, colour, and quality of the brick product in different ways. Laboratory tests (full physical analysis) can indicate the suitability of a clay for the manufacture of ceramic products. The minerals most essential for the manufacturing of clay brick products are kaolinite, illite, and quartz (Stein, 1982)."

This paper presents an integrated pipeline transport system for thickened coal sludge, which combines pretreatment and pipeline transport with combustion techniques of thickened coal sludge. The pipeline can transport thickened coal sludge with a sufficiently high solids content (about72%?77%) and high apparent viscosity (about 1 000Pa?S?3,000 Pa?S) directly by pipeline having neither use for water nor an addition agent. The transport distance can be as high as 1 000 metres. In particular, the operating principles, key equipment and technical parameters of this integrated system are examined in this paper. The integrated system effectively causes no pollution to the environment because it is completely sealed, and conserves energy over traditional conveyer designs. The South African coal-mining industry uses a uniform safety-factor formula for non-squat pillars, incorporating a coal-strength constant that was derived empirically by Salamon and Munro in the 1960s. The constant is 7,2 MPa. Since that time, collapses of pillars at relatively high safety factors have occurred in the Vaal Basin. Analysis of the post-1960s' collapses indicated that the strength constant for the Vaal Basin is 4,5 MPa. A crude method for the prediction of the minimum life span of pillars in the Vaal Basin is presented.

"Narrow tabular platinum group element deposits in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa are typically evaluated by diamond core drilling from surface. Several short deflections are drilled from each mother hole in order to obtain multiple intersections at a close spacing (less than 1 m). Examination of the intersections from deflection drilling revealed the importance of these deflections in understanding the representivity of the borehole, obtaining an estimate of the nugget effect, and mitigating the undesirable effect of the high grade variability at the ultra-short range that is a characteristic of these deposits. The use of deflections in estimation was investigated by means of a number of techniques and scenarios in order to find the most appropriate way to use them in an estimate. A significantly improved level of confidence was gained from using multiple close-spaced intersections rather than a single borehole intersection. IntroductionThe Upper Group 2 chromitite layer (UG2 or UG2 Reef) is known for its remarkable geological continuity, being traced almost uninterrupted for tens of kilometres. However, what is often less well emphasized is the high variability in platinum group element (PGE) grade and thickness (and therefore PGE content) and internal reef stratigraphy over very short distances (several metres or even tens of centimetres).This paper examines the application of short drill-hole deflections in evaluating UG2 PGE mineral resources at Marikana in the western Bushveld Complex of South Africa."

"Coal fines produced during processing are difficult to dewater and result in a lower quality product and consequent lower value. A South African coal mine experiences severe difficulties with belt filter dewatering operations due to the presence of fines reporting from the thickener underflows. Plant 2 currently handles super-fine particles of size -34 µm and has low belt filter efficiency: excessive moisture retention lowers the product quality and strains downstream processing. It was necessary to determine an alternative method for dewatering these fines. Blending of fine material with coarser material was proposed as a solution. The effect of coal particle size and layering during ultrafines belt filter dewatering was evaluated using various blends of the fine Plant 2 material with coarser Plant 1 material. The best layering arrangement of the two materials and its optimum blend required to achieve reduced filter cake moisture content was determined in practise using a vacuum filter to simulate belt filtration. A blend of the two materials gave improved dewatering efficiency for the belt filters compared with that of the Plant 2 material alone. The best layering configuration was with Plant 2 material at the bottom and Plant 1 material on top. The optimum blend for industrial applications comprised 48% fines from Plant 2. IntroductionFines are produced during the processing of coal. It is estimated that 2 to 3% of run-ofmine coal reports to the ultrafine portion (-100 µm) (le Roux, 2005). The particle size of coal is inversely proportional to the amount of water adsorption, so smaller particles adsorb more moisture. Moisture removal requires either mechanical processes or thermal drying: mechanical processes are less expensive, but the fines still have high moisture retention. Discarding of fines leads to economic losses, so it is essential that they be dewatered so that they can then be sold as a product: fines need to be treated for both resource management and conservation reasons (Kenney, 1994). Removal of free surface moisture from ultrafine coal particles using a belt filter therefore remains a process that needs to be continuously improved. Ultrafine coal originating from a thickener underflow is known to be difficult to dewater owing to factors such as filter cloth blockage and moisture retention due to clogging. Mixing of finer and coarser materials has been proposed to deliver better dewatering efficiency and improved the quality of the recycled water (Kenney, 1994)."

One of the most promising options for extraction of copper from low-grade chalcopyrite ores by heap leaching, however, chalcopyrite is refractory and suffers slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction due to formation of a passivation layer on the particles. The solution composition is believed to strongly affect the formation of this layer. This paper examines the effects of the major cationic species of Fe3+/2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, and Al3+ and the anionic SO42− species in acidic ferric sulfate media with a composition simulating recycle heap leach conditions. It was found that altering the sulfate, iron or aluminium concentration had significant effect on the copper extraction, the concentration of copper slightly influenced the extraction, and the amount of magnesium had no appreciable effect. Also, iron and aluminium caused a change in the sulfate concentration, and the sulfate ions had the greatest influence on the extraction of copper under recycle leach conditions
