The influence of Iscor coke and Delmas coal on the reduction of Mamatwan manganese ore to ferromanganese was examined by use of a variation of the 'stationary charge in controlled environment' (SCICE) technique. The charges of Mamatwan ore and the appropriate reducing agent were heated to temperatures between 1300 and I600 °C and either allowed to cool immediately the required temperature had been reached or held at that particular temperature for periods of up to ... hours. The heating rate was 350°C per hour, the particle size of the ore was between 2,83 and 12,7 mm, and the particle size of the reducing agent was between 2,83 and 6,35 mm. After being allowed to cool in air, the reacted charges were examined by optical microscopy, X-ray-diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and electron-microprobe analysis. No significant difference was found between the changes observed during the reduction of Mamatwan manganese ore by Iscor coke and by Delmas coal. A hypothesis is advanced to explain the mechanism of formation of the Fe-Mn-C alloy.

Following the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, research into coal pillar strength resulted in the adoption of the concept of a safety factor for the design of stable pillars in South African coal mining. At the time when the original statistical analysis was performed by Salamon and Munro in the early 1960s, 27 cases of failed pillar workings were considered suitable for inclusion in the database of failed pillars. Pillar failure did not stop after the introduction of the safety factor formula by Salamon and Munro (1967). In the ensuing years, pillars that were created before the application of the formula deteriorated and later failed, as did ones that were created after the introduction of the formula. This means that over time, the database of failed pillar cases increased in size, allowing ever more reliable analyses to be performed. The number of failed cases in the database had grown from the original 27 in the 1960s to 86 by 2011. All the failed cases are contained in the updated database. The database of stable pillars, which is also used in the derivation of strength formulae, has now been extended from 125 to 337 cases. The new database of intact pillar cases is more complete as it bridges the time gap between the Salamon and Munro (1967) and the Van der Merwe (2006) databases. The original requirements for inclusion into the database were satisfied in the compilation of this latest collection. The characteristics of the original database of intact pillars did not change in a meaningful way. The mining depth and pillar dimensions of the new database are largely as they were in the original database. Time-related trends with regard to pillar dimensions and depth of mining could not be found, indicating that the geometrical parameters of coal mining in South Africa have not changed meaningfully in approximately a century of mining. The characteristics of cases in the updated database of failed pillars does not differ substantially from the one published by Van der Merwe (2006). The same difference between that database and the original Salamon and Munro database, namely that the average safety factor of the failed cases had increased dramatically, from 1.0 to 1.5, is still apparent. This may be due to the inclusion of more failures from specific areas that exhibit a disproportionate number of failures at higher safety factors. These areas are the Vaal Basin, Klip River, and Free State coalfields. The new database confirms yet again that there is no correlation between the safety factors of failed pillars and their time of failure. The safety factor on its own is thus not a reliable predictor of longterm stability of pillars. Keywords coal pillar, stable pillar cases, pillar collapse, pillar data base.

This investigation compares the gas adsorption behaviour and capacity of three bituminous coals from South Africa, of similar rank, by assessing the characteristics of the raw coal, as well as the resulting float and sink fractions (at 1.80 cm3/g) obtained by density separation of crushed coal samples. Calculations were also made to obtain the raw coal gas storage capacity from the weighted contribution of both float and sink fractions results, thereby permitting comparison with the analysed results of the raw coal. The study demonstrated that the clean fraction of a coal has the highest capacity to retain gas in the sorbed state, followed by raw coal, and lastly the sink fraction, and re?confirmed previous investigations that showed minerals to be inhibitors of gas adsorption and retention.

An engineering house?s perspective of required inputs in designing a copper electrowinning tank house and ancillary equipment calls for both understanding of the key fundamental controlling mechanisms and the practical requirements to optimize cost, schedule and product quality. For direct or post solvent extraction copper electrowinning design, key theoretical considerations include current density and efficiency, electrolyte ion concentrations, cell voltages and electrode over potentials, physical cell dimensions, cell flow rates and electrode face velocities, and electrolyte temperature. Practical considerations for optimal project goals are location of plant, layout of tank house and ancillary equipment, elevations, type of cell furniture, required cathode quality, number and type of cells, material of construction of cells, structure and interconnecting equipment, production cycles, anode and cathode material of construction and dimensions, cathode stripping philosophy, plating aids, acid mist management, piping layouts, standard electrical equipment sizes, electrolyte filtration, impurity concentrations, bus bar and rectifier/transformer design, electrical isolation protection, crane management, sampling and quality control management, staffing skills and client expectations. All of the above are required to produce an engineered product that can be designed easily, constructed quickly and operated with flexibility.

Global trends stipulate the need to optimize existing assets while reducing environmental impacts. This paper illustrates the procedure that was followed to achieve such goals at one of the coal burning flash dryer units at an Anglo American smelter. An in-depth study of the process and related literature led to the development and installation of a revised control philosophy. This system includes modifications to the existing regulatory control structure as well as a hybrid rule-based and model-predictive advanced process control (APC) layer. Since commissioning of the APC, this flash dryer?s average throughput has increased by more than 6%, despite higher feed moistures. Furthermore, even though coal consumption has increased slightly, operating efficiency has improved by close to 5%. This was made possible by improving stability of the drying column outlet temperature by approximately 40%, which in turn enabled selection of a more optimal setpoint. Recent data has shown that APC utilization now exceeds 95%. This is indicative of a successful controller installation with good site acceptance. The same philosophy has therefore since been rolled out to most of the other flash dryers in the group.

Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.

In pyrometallurgical processes, metal oxides are reduced from molten slag through carbothermic reduction. It is of interest to evaluate the reactivity of the carbonaceous materials towards substances such as slag. Characterization techniques such as coal petrography can provide insight into the influence of feed coal properties and how they potentially dictate reductant performance. This study aimed to compare the petrographically determined organic composition of coal to reductant reactivity. Two South African medium-rank C bituminous coals and one anthracite sample were investigated together with high-carbon ferromanganese industrial slag. The reductant reactivity tests were conducted at 1500°C in a muffle furnace to assess the potential of carbonaceous reductant in reacting with the main slag components. SEM-EDS was applied to understand the extent of MnO (and to a lesser extent, SiO2) reduction from the slag. Coal 2, consisting of a greater proportion of vitrinite (59.5 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis and 54.7 vol% including mineral matter) was the most reactive reductant. The anthracite sample, with the highest inert maceral proportions (71.8 vol% including mineral matter and 76.8 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis), was the least reactive reductant.

The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. The aim of the paper is to discuss the possibility of producing aggregates with an increased content of regular particles, as well as to present a method of aggregate production which has not previously been used in the industry. Traditional aggregate production circuits require the application of three or four grinding stages (depending on the particle size of the feed), but for fine particle fractions of aggregates, irregular grains occur on average with a content of 10%. The innovative technological circuit can produce the aggregates with the content below 3%, even in a single- or two-stage crushing circuit. Downstream jig beneficiation of such prepared material results in higher separation sharpness, lower probable error index (Ep) and imperfection (I). Contribution to discussion M. J. Martinson (Associate Member)*: Application of the simple selection test mentioned in the penultimate paragraph of the paper (reference to a more detailed description of the test would not have been inappropriate) should assist South African mining engineers to make more efficient and possibly more humane use of available labour. The authors mention that the test 'is in use in the gold mining industry', and it would be interesting to know the extent of this usage in terms either of number of mines or as a percentage of the total number of labourers employed on 'heavy' tasks. The paper would have been of greater interest had the authors attempted to relate their findings to the statistics of labour usage in gold mines, members of the Chamber, and to the 'heavy' tasks in particular. On this the authors confine themselves in their Introduction to the somewhat ambiguous statement that 'A relatively high proportion of the 360,000 Bantu mine labourers are employed underground on manual tasks'. To appreciate the practical significance of the authors' work one needs a detailed breakdown of the underground labour force by occupations, together with estimates of quantities such as: (a) total stope and development tonnages moved manually per shift: by shovelling by shovel/tram by tramming together with distances and any other relevant data; (b) theoretical energy expenditures required to accomplish (a); (c) actual energy expenditures required to a accomplish (a); (d) energy theoretically available to accomplish (a) based on 50 per cent of the total maximum oxygen intakes of the labour force allocated to these tasks. Analyses of this sort on an industry basis might demarcate the more promising areas for detailed investigation. Stress is often laid on the need for increased mechanisation to increase stope productivity, but it may be questioned if enough is known about the characteristics, performance and potential of our underground labour force to warrant blind acceptance of stope mechanization as the industry's panacea. Provided that health and safety are not compromised, the ultimate yardstick for assessing any form of stoping is profitability; obviously the industry must investigate very thoroughly any form of mechanization which might reasonably be expected to increase profitability, but it should also be remembered that a radical overhaul of existing systems-which have after all evolved by trial and error over the past 75

The sixth University of Stelenbosch (US)/University of Cape Town (UCT) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the University of Cape Town on Friday, 7th August, 1987, and was sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). Once again the Symposium attracted a large number of delegates from the mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries. Uranium and electricity A symposium on 'Uranium and Electricity- The Complete Nuclear Fuel Cycle' will be held in Saskatoon, Canada, during 18th to 20th September, 1988. The Symposium is sponsored by the Canadian Nuclear Society. Electric steel The Institute of Metals, organizers of the 3rd European Electric Steel Congress, have announced that this important international event will take place in October 1989 at the Bournemouth International Centre.

The maximum oxygen intakes of samples of about 30 Bantu, weighing less than 50 kg from different tribal groups (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan) were measured on a treadmill. The mean maximum oxygen intake of the 164 men was 2,12 litresjmin and only 18 men (11 per cent of the sample) had maximum oxygen intakes of 2,5 litres/min or above (the minimum requirement for such tasks as shovelling rocks and tramming it). The samples of the different tribes differ in age, but when the age effect is taken into account then there were no significant differences between tribes in maximum oxygen intakes. An incidental finding was that both age and body weight correlated significantly with the maximum oxygen intakes of these underweight subjects. Not one of the subjects who weighed less than 45 kg or who was older than 40 years had maximum oxygen intakes high enough to permit their being able to do strenuous work underground. It is clear therefore that Bantu who weigh less than 45 kg or are older than 40 years should not be employed on such strenuous tasks as shovelling rock and tramming it.

This paper reports on a test that was conducted underground in a mine for two years on the following: pipes coated with paint, fusion-bonded powder, metal, or impregnated tape; and aluminium, stainless-steel, 3CR12, and plastic pipes. It was found that the degree of corrosivity and mechanical damage increases substantially from the shaft of a mine towards the stope. Thus, the range of coatings that can be used successfully is fairly large in the shaft and haulageways, but corrosion-resistant materials, especially corrosion-resistant steels, need to be used close to the stope. A study of the relative costs involved showed the costs of pipes of low-carbon steel and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride to be lowest, and those of epoxy-coated steel pipes to be highest.

Koffiefontein Mine commissioned a distributed antenna system as an underground communication backbone for the DISPATCH® production management system during September1999. STAS Ltd, the supplier of the Distributed Antenna System developed the System for an Integrated and Automated Mine (SIAM). This communication system, in conjunction with DISPATCH®, fulfils Koffiefontein Mine’s present and future requirements for accurate draw control, increasing productivity and improving working conditions. The DAS as SIAMnet communication network was selected by the mine, because of its superior data transmission rate of up to 1.5Mbps at 860MHz, video and Ethernet transmission facilities, and future enhancement abilities. The results of the commissioning tests confirmed the quality and integrity of the data and voice communication. The initial installation enabled 9000 metres of underground production tunnels with voice communication inclusive of 3700 metres having data communication. This article discusses the requirements and selection of the telecommunication system for an underground mine. A description of the installed distributed antenna system follows with a summary of the commissioning tests. A discussion of the reliability of the components is followed by conclusions with suitable recommendations. Keywords: distributed antenna system, underground mining, telecommunication system.

The objective of ergonomics is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which human tasks are carried out. Furthermore, the objective is to improve desirable human values. This can be achieved by enhancing safety, reducing fatigue and stress, increasing comfort, increasing job satisfaction, having greater user acceptance and thereby improving the quality of life. Mechanization has influenced the prevalence of injury, mainly due to the application of human physical effort as the power source. With mechanization, the operator’s function is now essentially one of control rather than being an energy source, however the risk of injury has not diminished. Mechanization in itself has introduced inefficiencies, health risks and physiological stress. The major objectives of ergonomics are discussed through examples of acceptable and less successful implementation of ergonomics within mechanized mining. The influence of the machine system on the human is addressed and practical solutions to improve and optimize the interaction of the human and the machine are outlined. Furthermore, practical examples of control and display integration, anthropometric and biomechanic influences on design, orientation, posture and stereotypes are used to accentuate the advantages of the application of sound ergonomics principles to the specialised area of mechanized mining.

Book news 1. Book reviews ? Prospecting in areas of desert terrain. London, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, 1985. 283 pp. £28 (members £25,20). Reviewer: J.S. Mostert This publication records the proceedings of a con¬ference convened to deal exclusively with prospecting in areas of desert terrain. The meeting, organized jointly by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (London) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Morocco, was held in Rabat from 14th to 17th April, 1985, and generated considerable international interest. Exploration cam¬paigns and case studies of successful discoveries in the desert areas of more than 14 lands are described. Since large areas of South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are characterized by and and semi-arid terrains, this publication should be of considerable interest to explorationists and mining engineers engaged in the search for and development of mineral deposits in southern Africa. The fact that the desert terrains of southern Africa are host to a number of important base-metal (Aggeneys, Gamsberg, Prieska, and O'Okiep) and diamond deposits (Orapa, Jwaneng) has ensured continued interest in these areas from the viewpoints of exploration and mining.
