From a historical perspective, bentonite is the common rock term for various uses and applications. Its name originates from water-based muds near Fort Benton used for lubrication of wagon wheels during the 19th century migration to western territories (which are presently part of the United States) when the pioneers ran out of axle grease. From a clay mineralogy perspective, bentonite is composed primarily of montmorillonite, an expandable magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral. When magnesium occupies an octahedral structural site that usually contains an aluminum atom, a negative charge is created. In order to neutralize negative charges, cations are drawn to the interlayer surfaces between clay mineral sheet structures. Modem applications for bentonite depend on the sodium or calcium cation populations and other characteristics of the clay mineral. When sodium is the dominant cation, the material is called sodium bentonite, also known as swelling bentonite, western bentonite or Wyoming bentonite. When calcium or magnesium is the dominant cation, the material is called calcium bentonite, also known as non-swelling bentonite w southern bentonite.

In situ mining and extraction is one of the Frontier Technologies that is destined to play an increasingly important role in the recovery of metals and minerals in the future. This premise is based on increasing costs of labor and energy, increasing awareness of environmental considerations and decreasing ore grades in the United States. Up to now, in situ mining has been successfully applied to a few favorable situations for the extraction of some evaporites, copper and uranium. However, because of its unique technical, environmental and economic advantages, this versa tile technology will find broader applications for the recovery of above commodities as well as for others which are currently extracted by hydrometallurgical means. This paper traces the development of in situ mining and extraction; stresses its dependence on interdisciplinary science and engineering; discusses its theoretical, practical and economic aspects; and finally presents potential applications of this Frontier Technology.

Radioisotope tracers have so far been used for extraction of residence time distributions of flotation devices. They have also been proven applicable to evaluation of rate coefficients k of industrial flotation. It is now shown how values of k are scaled up on the basis of laboratory data on flotation and chemical conditioning, and of laboratory testing of samples from output of industrial conditioning vessel. Subsequently a model of conditioning and flotation is obtained which may be used for simulation and control of the steady state of the combined process. Discussion extends to modelling, simulation, CAD and opti- mization of flotation plants with re- circulation, and of ore dressing systems which consist of grinding and flotation plants.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

Recovery of fine particles has been considered to be a major limitation of the classical flotation process. However, the beneficiation of kaolin, a naturally occurring fine ore, via flotation has been practiced over the last 40 years. Kaolin is valued as a white pigment, and therefore, the goal in kaolin flotation circuits is to remove the colored impurities to result in an acceptable brightness product. Kaolin flotation originated with a novel carrier flotation process, and later on carrier less flotation techniques were developed. The collector chemistry utilized to beneficiate kaolin is based on fatty acids, and recently hydroxamates have been successfully used. The purpose of this paper is to cover the flotation practice in the kaolin industry in terms of the history and the reagent schemes.

A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various kinetic test protocols on sulfate production, NP depletion and time to acidity. Six test protocols were evaluated including standard humidity cells, non-aerated cells, tall cells, shaken cells, simulated precipitation cells, and NP depletion columns. The study indicates that test protocols which disrupt the oxidizing environment, such as extreme wetting and drying cycles, shaking the cells, or the high addition of acidic water will create an unnatural environment that affect the results. Trickle leach and non-aerated test protocols create an oxidizing environment that more closely represents field conditions and are therefore recommended.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ mining (ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits. It used light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and textural features of these samples. This included the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channel ways. Low-grade disseminated deposit types from the western US were found to contain fracture- hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data in order to understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching the ore minerals.

Mine ventilation survey data includes generally redundant, usually inconsistent, often incomplete, and always noisy measurements. Yet, these data are essential for operational decisions and represent the foundation of any mine ventilation systems model used for future engineering analysis and design. For example, the basic ventilation network geometry can be measured with a reasonable precision, the network flows can be measured, but with significant errors, and the branch resistance factors can not be directly measured at all. The network-based, constrained weighted least squares approach, presented in this paper, advances a method for the sys tem-wide adjustment of ventilation branch measurements and the consistent estimation of global system parameters (e.g. branch flows, head losses, and resistance factors). The constraints guarantee that the adjusted values satisfy the governing physical laws: conservation of flow, conservation of energy, and the appropriate energy dissipation rule (e. g. Atkinson's RQ2). The weights allow for the proper inclusion of data with widely disparate precision, as well as offering a simple method for retiring old data as the mine changes through time. The post-adjustment sensitivity analysis presents two potentially useful forms of analysis: the identification of previously unspecified leakage branches, and the semi- automatic recommendation for future ventilation measurement campaigns. The overall efficiency of the algorithm is exemplified by the fact that a ventilation network with hundreds of branches and thousands of measurements can be routinely adjusted on a microcomputer.

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. Although fracture intersections and "domes" seem at a number of places to be the basic structural combination for the occurrence of a mining district, of the porphyry-copper type particularly, this situation is, of course, not always to be expected. For instance, the group of mines comprising Superior, Ray, Miami, Globe, Christmas appeared from the beginning of these structural studies as typical exceptions, and there are others. One had to expect additional parameters to allow for any mineral concentration to occur. One of these apparent parameters is here considered. From the result of stratigraphic studies related to ancient formations in Southeast Arizona, the Martin limestone (Devonian in age) was retained as having a possible relationship with the structure-economic studies in progress, as evidenced for instance by the mineralized O'Carroll bed located at the base of the Martin. This limestone formation has been rather extensively investigated in the past and there are many known sample localities. For this work, the isopach map was drawn by computer to insure more objectivity and, in addition to the available data points, a number of dummy points with a zero value were added around the assumed form-

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and six EPRI-member utilities are sponsoring research to define relationships between coal properties and coal handling behavior. Deratings and outages caused by plugged chutes or bunkers or frozen coal can cost utilities millions of dollars annually in lost energy production as well as in manpower to restore coal flow. There is also the added expense of maintaining redundant equipment to assure a continuous coal feed to the boiler, a common practice for utilities. Over the past two years, researchers at CQ Inc. and Iowa state university have collected and analyzed coal samples to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals for their power plants. These coal samples cover ranges in ash content, rank, grindability, size distribution, and moisture content--properties that affect the handling behavior of coals. Other properties, such as the washability and ash composition, are measured as well. Over the remaining two years of the project, all of these analyses will be correlated to handling behavior, measured using a triaxial shear tester that determines the strength of a coal under compression. An index will be developed and validated at host utility power plants.

This paper discusses some common human and organizational barriers to enter- prise integration. It proposes how to develop the organizational and human' networks to match the capabilities of the technical networks which are being' implemented. This study examines the problems involved with the control of characteristics of the products resulting from comminution operations. A methodology of investigation based on texture analysis procedures by image processing techniques of the comminution product is proposed. Some examples of applications are considered with particular reference to comminution products of different textural, structural and mechanical characteristics. The advantages and the limites of this method of approach are, indicated, both as regards performance of the investigations and subsequent processing of results.

The economic environment of mining is particular and requires special methods for seeking the economic optimization of mining and guiding the construction of logical production planning systems. An interactive program system which generates sequences of mining rates and cutoff grades, using as it's core an open-ended dynamic programming algorithm, is described. The program system is built not with the aim of obtaining a single mathematical optimum, but on the concept of satisfying the mine planner by producing several alternative mine plans and testing various schedules under conditions of uncertainty.

Shotcrete is used both in mining and tunnelling for supporting rock. Both dry and wet processes are used for shotcreting, and each produces good quality concrete. Thick shotcrete layers function as a concrete arch supporting loose rock. Thin layers prevent relative movements between the blocks of rock due to the fine concrete in the cracks and joints. No progressive fallouts occur since key blocks are kept in place. Rockbolts are often used together with shotcrete in order to create an arch around the tunnel making the rock to support itself. Shotcrete is sprayed either manually or by means of mechanized equipment. The aim is to spray required the layer thickness in one pass and with a minimum amount of rebound. Sprayed layers should also be as even as possible. The tip of the nozzle should be moved in circular movements. The shotcrete should be sprayed at a right angle to the rock surface; the optimum distance from the nozzle to the application surface must be found by experiment. In a mine shotcreting forms a materials handling system which includes batching, transporting and the actual shotcreting. The equipment used vary depending on the spraying method, mining conditions and the location of the mine. Shotcreting is performed with a purpose-designed unit in most cases where operation is mechanized. The shotcreting unit consists of a spraying machine with a hose and a nozzle, an additive system, a manipulator and a mobile carrier with all the necessary controls and accessories. The key element of the unit is the shotcreting manipulator which holds and guides the nozzle as required. The manipulators currently in use are hydraulically operated, and their remote controlled booms are also often called robots. These manipulators have enabled users to increase their output capacities, to remove the operator away from unsafe areas and from the influence of dust and rebound. Furthermore, they improve the shotcrete quality and reduce shotcreting costs.

By using the data of E.A. Hersam and F.C. Bond's equation for energy consumption in comminution, a method was developed to analyze the performance of industrial jaw crushers. The study showed that industrial jaw crushers are generally operated below capacity. The study also showed that industrial jaw crushers generally have sufficient installed power to operate at, full capacity. The method presented can be used to estimate the capacities and power requirements of jaw crushers.

Contaminated mine drainage presents a potential hazard for aquatic ecosystems and groundwater resources. Reliable predictions of long-term developments in seepage quality are necessary to select reasonable decommissioning options and remediation measures for waste-rock heaps during mine closure and/or mining site rehabilitation to minimize future risks and environmental hazards. Extensive geochemical modeling work was used to assess the consequences of various remediation options for waste rock heaps at a former uranium mine in Eastern Germany. The predicted contaminant discharges are used for an assessment of long- term benefits of decommissioning alternatives to derive conclusions for sustainable remediation measures using risk-based cost/benefit analyses.

Restricted fields of vision are a common problem with underground mining equipment. Also, when lighting systems are provided, they may be positioned where they cause glare. This restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a PC-based software package to aid in the analysis of certain human engineering aspects of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines.

This paper is a description of certain geologic aspects of the Inspiration mining operation. It is not a geologic description of the Inspiration deposit nor an exposition of all the geologic work involved in the development and exploitation of the deposit. A few specific examples of the application of geology and geostatistics to the mining process are given to illustrate the progress that has been made in making the Inspiration Mine more efficient and cost effective, and a statement of the philosophy of geologic applications is offered.

Managing a mine or mineral processing operation in today's environment presents many unique challenges to mining companies. In recent years, headlines around the world have publicized major incidents such as those associated with the Marcopper Mine in the Philippines, the cyanide release in Guyana from the Omai gold mine and numerous other mishaps associated with mining. These notable upsets were due to engineered system failures, either during normal operations or as a result of uncontrollable events. There fore, many mining firms are attempting to assess their overall risks and establish some priority for expenditure of limited operational and environmental budgets. Failure of an engineered component can have dire operational consequences that affect profitability until repair or replacement can be completed. In addition, there may be significant environmental consequences associated with the engineered system failure. This, too, may affect profitability for an extended time or even the viability of an operation. An engineered risk assessment (ERA) can support a mining company's efforts to cost effectively manage environmental risks associated with the operation of its facilities. The ERA approach also provides information about the current condition of engineered systems. This ERA approach provides a systematic review of the risks of an engineered system failure and the possible associated environmental consequences at mining company facilities. This approach has been successfully applied to many industries and types of engineered systems (Barneich et al, 1996; Whitman, 1984; Power and Tomkins, 1974; Keeney, Nair, and Kulkarni, 1979). This approach evaluates all mining and mineral processing facilities located at a single site and compares them with similar facilities located at multiple mine sites. The ERA approach has been applied to a mining, milling, smelting, leaching and refining operations. These assessments can be part of a comprehensive environmental program to aid in the recognition and cost effective management of the potential environmental risks associated with the operation of facilities.
