Southern Oklahoma (including the Arbuckle Mountains) has outcrops of rocks representing Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Cretaceous ages. Thus, rocks of every geologic age in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras, except the Jurassic and Triassic Periods, are present in south-central Oklahoma. With rocks of such an enormous age range present in a relatively small geographic area, it is little wonder that a wide variety of economic rock and mineral resources are locally present. This report will describe the occurrence, mining, processing, and end-uses (dictated by chemical and physical properties) of the Precambrian Troy Granite, the Cambrian Royer Dolomite and Fort Sill Limestone, Ordovician silica sands of the Simpson Group, Ordovician limestones of the Viola Springs and Welling Formations, and Ordovician Sylvan Shale. In general, the more the end-use depends upon chemical composition and purity, the greater the price that can be demanded for such-minerals. The not-so-successful attempts to mine zinc, manganese, copper, and iron from the Arbuckle Mountains also will be discussed briefly, and I will provide a sermonette on analytical chemistry and its usefulness to corporate CEOs. I may be one of the few persons at this Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals who is not a professional geologist. I am an analytical chemist specializing in geochemistry. In particular, I investigate trace elements in rocks and their consequences in industrial processes. As such, I have consulted to the mining industry (and their clients) for two decades, always with the intent of improving service and product quality.

This paper outlines a proposed research project to investigate secondary sulphide ignitions. Sulphide dust explosions have resulted in loss of production and considerable capital and equipment replacement cost in Canadian mines. The practical application of laboratory test results to actual mine situations presents a complex problem and is a field requiring immediate investigation. The factors contributing to the outbreak of sulphide ignitions are not clearly understood. This indicates a need for future research to study the influence of blasting parameters, exhaust temperatures, and dust characteristics on secondary ignitions at source. The aim is to establish realistic quantities for each of the parameters and develop a model that will incorporate field and laboratory quantities. It may be possible to predict outcomes of sulphide ignitions when the parameters are known. It is also planned to study the techno-economic feasibility of the preventive and control methods. One aspect of planned future research requires quantification of some terms by obtaining measurements of pollutant concentrations and size distribution of the airborne dust in an underground environment immediately after a main blast. A blast-proof aerosol sampling package to measure the source term will be designed. This sampling package will consist of a sampling section and a shield which will be capable of withstanding a blast explosion. The accuracy in measuring the variables and combination of variables will be the main focus in this proposed study.

Two optoelectronic detectors were developed by CONSOL R&D for fine coal processing applications. One sensing device is used to estimate the amount of fine coal in the solids fraction of the froth flotation tailings slurry. The other probe, based on similar technology, is capable of measuring sol ids concentrations as high as 10 weight percent in fine coal slurry streams. These patented optoelectronic sensors are installed in several CONSOL coal preparation plants and are an integral part of the fine-coal control systems.

In April 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded the first contract for rapid machine excavation of a water conveyance tunnel . Since then the Bureau has excavated seven tunnels with a total length of over 190,000 feet utilizing rapid excavation tunneling machines. Tunnel bored diameters have varied from 9' 0" to 20' 10" (See Table #1) and tunnel lengths from 5,000 feet to 67,000 feet. Driver and cutter units varied from 43 rolling teeth and eight rolling discs mounted on a rotating head driven by five 200 HP 23,000 volt electric motors to 20 discs and one tricone unit mounted on a rotating head driven by two 100 HP 440 volt motors. All tunnels were driven with a laser beam guidance system governing both line and grade. Trailing conveyors and rail haulage systems were used to dispose of the excavated material. Approved Bureau of Mines diesel locomotive engines for waste trains were prevalent power sources supplemented by battery units on some projects. Sandstone, conglomerates, agglomerates, siltstone, shale, and granite were the geological formations encountered, with sandstone and shale the preponderant material . Tunnel support systems utilized were structural steel ribs; rock bolts and metal plates; and shotcrete, or combinations of these. Progress varied from 51-1/2 feet to 154 feet per working day for three shifts, depending on rock material and supports required. One contractor established a record rate of advance of over 400 feet in one day, 1,905 feet in one week, and 6,848 feet in one month. Such diversified experience in underground machine excavation methods presented an excellent opportunity to observe, analyze, and evaluate associated environmental health problems. This paper presents an application case history of the planning methods used for developing, costing and scheduling an underground hydro- electric pumped storage facility in weak rock. This method covers the system configuration, excavation methods and costs, initial support systems and final lining systems. This study was performed by the Omaha District, Corps of Engineers for the proposed Gregory County Hydro- electric Pumped Storage Project, and presents a synopsis and the results of the studies performed.

Grinding simulators are now widely available to assist in the selection of circuit operating conditions or flowsheet designs that yield a given product size distribution. These simulators do not inform of the impact of the grinding product size distribution on subsequent flotation stages. This paper presents a method to predict the effect of fineness of grind on a flotation bank operation. Application of the method is illustrated with data from two Canadian concentrators.

Extensive investigation has been conducted to determine the causes of a series of roof falls occurring in an underground coal mine located in southern West Virginia. Underground observation, along with laboratory testings and finite element analyses, were conducted to search for possible mechanisms for the roof falls. Results of the investigation have led to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the roof falls. Necessary modifications of mine layout and roof support plan are proposed for improving safety and profitability at the mine.

Newmont Mining's executive management launched an initiative in 1999 that was designed to engage the entire workforce in a continuous effort to systematically drive inefficiency out of the corporation. Built on a foundation of teams and teamwork, Gold Medal Performance (GMP) has had a significant and positive impact on the reduction of costs. At the same time, it has increased productivity, improved cash flow, and helped Newmont to further enhance health and safety programs. Currently, more than a hundred teams are working on improving line-balancing production and external communications at all levels of the corporation. The training and rigorous set of tools avail- able to and used by these teams were designed to help them improve communications, identify inefficiencies and their financial impact, develop and implement solutions, and finally, to measure the results of the process enhancement. GMP harnesses the energy, creativity, and productivity of the entire workforce.

This paper introduces the Rock Mass Median (RMM) index, a statistical measure of the mechanical quality of a rock mass thus is obtained through a mechanistic interpretation of the Poisson stochastic process. This process is the theoretical foundation of the Exponential Model, a probability distribution successfully used in practice to describe the spacing of discontinuities in rocks. Building on the Exponential Model, a simple method to compute RMM based on a widely accepted mechanical quality index is also presented. Verification is per formed through the analysis of two sets of core samples. Hypothesis testing at the 5% level of significance supports the validity of RMM for these samples.

"The decline in students for mining and metallurgical engineering in the last few years has lead to the closure of many university departments in all first world countries around the world. Three independent studies carried out in Europe, Australia and North America indicate that during the next decade the demand for mining, minerals processing and metallurgical engineers will be significantly higher than the supply. Demand for engineers will increase even more because many of the professionals in industry are about to retire within the next 5 years. Meanwhile mining is a growth industry, minerals demand continues to increase in line with the growth in World GDP, as illustrated in the Graph at the end of the paper."

Al unite has been used as raw material for producing alumina and potassium sulfate fertilizer in Russia for many years. In the United States, this mineral has not been commercially processed though reserves of 5 to 10 billion tons of alunite ore have been estimated. Major constituents of these ores are quartz and alunite. The minerals are finely intergrown and liberation occurs below 10 µm. Adequate separation techniques for such ultrafine particles have not been developed. A new method for the beneficiation of al unite ore is proposed in this study. This method utilizes a small amount of fine magnetite upon which the liberated quartz is selectively flocculated. The co-flocculated magnetite and quartz are then separated from the alunite in a high gradient magnetic separator. Clean products, e.g., an al unite concentrate of 90% grade with 80% recovery, has been obtained from Utah ore. Techniques for selective co-flocculation of magnetite and quartz, separation of the carried quartz, and recovery of magnetite after separation are discussed.

A ground penetrating synthetic pulse radar system has been used by the US Bureau of Mines to probe into a coal pillar to locate hidden structures or anomalies. Direct matrix inversion was used to obtain a velocity image of the interior of the pillar. The reconstructed image showed the existence and location of a relatively low velocity material within the pillar. Core samples were taken from the pillar in a region surrounding the low velocity material. Analysis of the cores showed the presence of a clay vein coinciding with the low velocity material imaged in the tomogram.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month. The Greek Cement Industry is a vital sector of our economy. With an annual production of cement over 15.5 million tonnes, it contributes significantly to the national gross domestic product (G.D.P.). The cement industry, as other mineralogical transformation process industries (lime, glass, ceramics, extractive metallurgy etc.), is high energy intensive. Each tonne of cement produced requires not only large amounts of fuels (coal, fuel oil), but additionally a significant quantity of electrical power as well. All fuels consumed by the Greek Cement Industry are imported and energy accounts for one third of the cement production cost. Therefore, it is of interest of the community and the industry to increase energy efficiency, to reduce the quantities of fuels consumed in the cement manufacturing process. It is also known that like almost all manufacturing processes, the cement industry produces large amounts of CO2 (combustion of fuels, de-carbonization of limestone and use to electricity). The utilization of wastes (principally as alternative fuels, scrap tires, spent solvents etc.) is compatible with the general principles of waste management and it is also a common practice in other European and developed countries. In the present paper the economic, social and environmental benefits provided by the recycle process of the various wastes in the Greek cement plants are extensively analyzed. From the whole work, it was concluded that such a practice: - replaces a significant percentage of imported fossil fuels in the cement manufacturing process, - maximizes the recovery of energy and also ensures their safe disposal, - produces overall environmental benefits by reducing releases to air, water and land, - prevents resource depletion of valuable non-renewable fossil fuels, - overcomes the need for the construction of dedicated incineration facilities, - contributes positively to the principles of the sustainable development.

Mechanical testing results on oriented Devonian gas shale core throughout the Appalachian basin show a preferred fracture direction perpendicular to bedding. The preferred direction is generally parallel to the Allegheny Front, but is only coincidentally parallel with in-situ stresses in some areas of the basin. The strength of the preferred orientation of induced fractures decreases with distance from the Front. It is suggested that strain related to Paleozoic deformation is responsible for this mechanical fabric and thus the direction of induced fractures in laboratory tests may not be of use as indicators of in-situ stress orientations as previously suggested.

The solute-transport model OTIS and the reactive solute-transport model OTEQ were used to simulate geochemical conditions in Cement Creek, a tributary to the Anirnas River in Colorado. OTIS was used to depict instream zinc concentrations, and to simulate the effects of two remediation scenarios on zinc concentrations at the mouth of Cement Creek. These simulations do not account for effects of changing stream pH on metal concentrations. Preliminary simulations using OTEQ to account for instream pH changes were unsuccessful due to the spatial nature of mixing processes, and insufficient information about the thermodynamic properties of precipitates forming in mixing zones.

Diesel-powered underground mining equipment is generally accepted as the most productive, safest, and most efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. Widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel emissions with particulate traps and filters.

This paper reports on recently completed research that investigated the health fabric of mining communities in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The project, funded by two national funding agencies and the BC Government, and supported by numerous provincial organizations, marked a collaboration between mining engineering and health researchers. The study employed mixed-methods. First, a quantitative phase merged census, mining industry and health data to investigate the relationship between declining economic conditions and health outcomes (mental illness and stress-mediated cardiovascular disease). Second, a qualitative phase investigated community health issues associated with the mining boom-bust cycle from the perspective of health and social service providers working in a northern BC coal mining community. Third health research findings were disseminated to potential knowledge users in the hope of enhancing mine impact assessing and integrated mine planning. The paper provides a synthesis of the research methods used in this project, and highlights the main indicators used and key findings. It concludes by identifying recommendations, and future research needs considered to be of particular importance to the health and sustainability of mining communities in BC, Canada and around the globe.

Estimating the Iron Ore reserves of Minnesota are directly related to both the geology of the deposit and the Scandinavian heritage of its people. The flat lying deposits, when properly prospected, make estimating easy and accurate across wide areas of the Mesabi Range. It also makes taxation simple on the unmined reserves. The reserves are their heritage and all the people should benefit, not just the owners. Heritage also dictates that newly discovered ores were there before discovery, hence, subject to the omitted property tax and liable for six years back taxes.

The Sudbury Basin is the scene of the mining operations of the Ontario Division of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. Around the rim of the geological formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located twelve operating mines and one open pit operated by the Company. The City, with a metropolitan population of some 100,000 lies 240 miles Northwest of Toronto. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario, at Shebandowan, 700 miles Northwest of Sudbury. In 1973 these mines produced 16.5 million short tons of ore of which 14.9 million tons were from underground and the balance from open pit operations. Mining methods include blasthole, sublevel caving, induced caving, shrinkage, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Raise boring commenced at Inco in 1964 and is now applied at all mines in the Sudbury District (Figure 1). [ ]
