Ventilation of gas mines keeps necessary sanitation and hygienic conditions for labor in mines and increases the safety by dilution and removal of hazardous and dangerous gases in accordance with the safety rules. Several different concepts exist at the present time to design mine ventilation control systems. But technical ideas have been developed inadequately and technological solutions have not been investigated experimentally enough to build a serviceable system. This paper presents a new concept of high- efficiency mine ventilation process control system (MVPCS). The methods of modern system engineering (Kalman, 1969) are used to establish its functional and algorithmic structure. A three level hierarchical principle of system building is considered.

This work applies the definition of "separation function" already introduced in the paper presented at the XVIII IMPC. This 'function" (defined for a certain size distribution after comminution of an ore) refers to the recovery distribution of a mineralogical species in a product made up of all the particles having at least a given content of that species. Many tests would be required to determine the liberation function for each mineralogical species, particularly for complex ores. Several stages of comminution would need to be examined and the mineralogical composition of the particles of each grain size class would need to be analyzed for each process step. A quick and dirty method is shown for obtaining the "separation function". It is based on the processing of data from topological maps of polished and/or thin representative sections of ore. By superimposing grids of different sizes over these maps and with appropriate combinations of mesh sizes, it is possible to simulate the grain size distributions linked to different stages of comminution and then evaluate the mineralogical composition of each grain. The procedure is carried out full automatically and can simulate a complete treatment circuit, imposing cut-off grades for the products at each separation phase. It is also possible to predict the results of treatment processes that involve grinding phases. The procedure has been successfully applied to complex ores containing several useful components.

Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is limited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized. This article outlines what typical baseline hydrogeologic data are needed and describes how it can be easily obtained during exploration drilling. Introduction Major engineering and environmental ground water parameters can be identified early in a project by using, drill hole data obtained from a mineral exploration program, designed by the mine geologist and hydrogeologist. Most importantly, data obtained in the exploration drilling program can be used to design a logical, defensible, and cost-effective baseline ground water data reconnaissance and monitor well program, which would be required for mine design and ultimately for mine permit approval. Drilling Where possible, exploration drill holes should be drilled with conventional rotary drilling equipment using air or, if necessary, water as the drilling fluid. Rotary air or water drilling generally allow good delineation of the first major saturated or water-bearing zone. If mud must be used during drilling, distinct hydrogeologic zones can still be defined, although the task may be considerably more difficult. Water Levels Static water levels can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes at specific depths while additional boreholes are drilled. Such measurements should not, however, be conducted until the hole has been developed with air (no water) and has stabilized at each of the depths to be measured. Such water-level information can be particularly useful when more than one aquifer exists. Where mine development is eminent, the hydrogeologist should install 50-100 mm (2-4 in.) diameter PVC casing in select drill holes. The PVC should be slotted, gravel packed, and properly sealed so additional hydrogeologic data can be collected for specific hydrogeologic zones at a later date. Such data could include water level information, permeability estimates based on injection and /or pumping tests, and water quality data. Where casing is not installed in drill holes, or when the drill holes are abandoned, the holes should be properly grouted and back-filled to the ground surface to prevent potential future ground water contamination. Monitoring Air Lift Water Production Estimates of the relative production from various water-bearing strata can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes. If ground water is encountered, its air lift (ground water flow) production can be measured at distinct intervals using a surface water flow measuring device, such as a portable Parshall

Extensive underground excavation will be required for construction of a mined geologic repository for nuclear waste. Hundreds of thousands of feet of drift will be required based on the conceptual layout design for each candidate nuclear waste repository. Comparison of boring and blasting excavation methods are discussed, as are special design and construction requirements (e.g., quality assurance procedures and performance assessment) for the nuclear waste repository. Comparisons are made between boring and blasting construction methods for the repository designs proposed for salt, volcanic tuff, and basalt. Differences in the geologic media and settings of the prospective sites influence the excavation method in terms of drift length, size of opening, drift slope, rock quality, and boreability. Support requirements, ventilation, and the ability of the geologic system to retard radionuclide migration are also directly impacted by the geology and excavation method.

Locating and defining an ore body with minerals or metals that can be recovered at a profit is the objective of minerals exploration. Direct exploration involves examining and sampling rocks either in outcrop, underground exposure, drill core, or cuttings. Indirect exploration infers the measurement of some physical, chemical, or biological factor that reflects the possible presence of the metal or mineral of interest, or a structure that may act to collect, concentrate, or otherwise favor the presence of the desired commodity. Included here are all forms of geophysical, geochemical, or geotech-nical prospecting. In recent years, indirect exploration has given rise to an impressive number of specialists and a variety of techniques. Less impressive is the success rate or productivity of the modern explorationist. Exploration Productivity Losing Ground Judging from the low number of mine openings or mine discoveries in recent years, the exploration industry is not as productive as it once was. Many will take umbrage at this judgment, but a review of the literature will support this statement. In Canada, from 1951 through 1960, there was an average of 5.6 discoveries a year. From 1961 through 1976 there were only four a year. This nearly 30% reduction occurred despite a massive increase in exploration funding. From 1950 to 1955, the Canadian mining industry spent $5 million (1975 dollars) for each minable deposit found. During the period 1970 to 1975, the cost was $25 million for each one found. The industry was spending five times as much and finding 30% less than a generation earlier. This is not indicative of a productive endeavor. The loss in productivity is even more apparent to explorationists who wander the western US, and are awed by the thoroughness and discovery rate of those early prospectors who explored from 1850-1920. The "old-timers" missed very little. They used pans and crude chemical tests in place of plasma or X-ray fluorescent assay techniques. But, they found ore bodies that led to mines. Today, the best prospecting areas are pockmarked by the hand dug pits, trenches, and shafts left by our predecessors. The success or productivity of the old-timers may be attributed to any or all of several factors. Granted, they were looking at virgin ground and at deposits that in many places were exposed. The factor most critical is, however, that they employed direct exploration methods. They walked over areas of interest, traversed swamps and mountains, and followed "colors" in stream gravels to their source. They also chipped rocks, dug pits, trenched along structures, and followed the "leads." Many of today's explorationists, on the other hand, adopt a more sophisticated approach. A geologic model is conjured up so the exploration team "knows" models, but the model should be applied at a later stage in the exploration effort. J. D. Ridge has written an excellent article on the role and timing of models. Geologists should collect and assemble data, facts, and observations and fit these into a model and not conceive a model and seek data to prove their vision. Further, many exploration managers are adept and talented at devising exploration programs. They can program and use modern exploration techniques and tools. They can apply these and their modeling capacity to assemble a glittering array of targets. It would appear that in all too many instances, creating targets has been equated with and is considered being productive. As noted, finding ore bodies is being productive in exploration. Creating targets may or may not lead to ore bodies. As an end result, locating targets is not productive exploration. How then does one foster productivity in exploration? Some suggestions are to increase the use of direct methods, follow the methods and philosophies of old-timers, look at more rocks, do more field work, use foot traverses, and do more drilling. The hard rock mining industry has long envied its counterparts in underground mining of evaporites, coal and soft iron ore, who have made great strides in productivity using mechanical excavators. Continuous mining machines produce large tonnages in Canadian potash mines and in modern longwall coal mines. Hard rock is defined here as having an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of more than 124 MPa (18,000 psi). Silica content, rock quality designation (RQD) and fractures affect the ability of mechanical tools to excavate rock, but the UCS is the main factor. Much research and development work has been devoted to continuous mechanical mining of hard rock, and the technology continues to improve. A few commercial applications have been reported. The development process has been slow and costly, but the outlook for the technology has never been more promising. The current state-of-the-art of continuous, mechanized underground mining technology is reviewed here, with examples of commercial applications that have been tried in recent years.

INTRODUCTION Site characterization using oriented borehole core is the subject of this paper. Borehole core is a standard source of data for rock mechanics investigations. Oriented borehole core provides data whereby the geometric orientation of various geologic discontinuities (faults, joints, bedding, etc.) may be determined. The orientation and strength characteristics of discontinuities are important in many engineering investigations and in particular, in slope stability analyses. In heavily vegetated or soil covered situations, oriented borehole core may provide the only means of assessing the subsurface planes of weakness which characterize the site. The purpose of this paper is to briefly describe various methods or orienting core, core characteristics which may be logged and the methods of processing and using the data for site characterization.

Previous work by the authors has shown that the performance of a flotation column can be improved by the use of horizontal baffles. These baffles prevent axial mixing and also reduce "churning" of the froth by breaking up or preventing the formation of large air bubbles. In this paper, results from tracer experiments are presented that show the effects of horizontal baffles on the reproducibility and stability of the column operation. The baffles prevent random disturbances, such as unusually large air bubbles and turbulence, from rapidly propagating along the height of the column. Because these factors are responsible for much of the variations in column performance between tests, the result is that the horizontal baffles make the column performance more reproducible, with fewer short-term variations.

The flotation process developed at Falconbridge laboratories utilizes sulphur dioxide and diethylenetriamine (DETA) reagent combination in the depression of pyrrhotite to allow its separation from pentlandite and chalcopyrite. DETA by itself has failed to produce flotation selectivity with samples from plant and pilot plant streams which showed relatively high redox potentials. However, DETA was found to function effectively on laboratory-generated samples under certain conditions. The results of poor depression are in keeping with thermodynamic calculations which indicate that in the presence of sufficient xanthate and DETA, the formation of ferric dihydroxy xanthate and dixanthogen is possible under oxidizing conditions. The use of sulphur dioxide alone has also resulted in a rather poor depression of pyrrhotite. However, the combined use of these reagents has resulted in an efficient and consistent separation of pyrhotite from pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Various aspects of this selective flotation system are presented along with a discussion on possible operating mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION The flotation of minerals from their ores in flotation cells involves understanding many chemical and physical processes ranging from electronic events in the bulk mineral and in the mineral surface regime. molecular events at interfaces, the statics and dynamics of thinning and rupture of microscopic to molecular intefacial films, the fluid mechanics of bubble- particle events, the dynamics of air-water-solid colloid states in a flotation machine, etc. etc. D.W. Fuerstenau, whom we honour in this symposium has made unique contributions to many of these diverse physico-chemical and technological sub-processes. The present paper is concerned with a number of observations of the behaviour of minerals in flotation cells and the surface science of some mineral sulfide-water systems. We do not intend to be comprehensive in our analysis, but rather to highlight the challenges that face the scientific masochist who chooses to understand "froth flotationn. In what follows, emphasis is placed quite deliberately on technologically relevant, dynamic or realistic flotation processes i.e. the recovery in a froth of a given sulfide mineral particle of a given size and history from synthetic or actual ores in a flotation cell. In the, mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The proposed modeling technique uses the following five basic (nonreducible) elements: H, Q, D, R and N. These elements are characterized by their pressure gain or loss, their air quantity and their pressure-vs. -quantity relationships, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine-ventilation networks.

Flowsheet improvements, such as series/parallel SX plant configurations, discontinuation of plant sumps and improved filter pumping concepts, the use of in-settler baffle systems, and the Krebs and combined mixer-settler designs offer opportunities to reduce SX plant cost. Today's plants employ permanent cathodes and mechanical stripping, and the increased capital cost can be offset by labor savings and higher current densities. The wider use of HDPE and new cell construction materials also reduce capital cost. The "Portelex" type of relocatable design embodies such new, cost-saving measures in a simple basic plant. Organic inventory and losses are reduced by new, fast-settling, hybrid organic reagents with improved kinetics and selectivity.

It is important to understand the mission that TML, as a design/build contractor, has undertaken and how the various interfaces have evolved between the other entities involved in the project. The paper will describe the evolution of the management organisation and the approach to completion of our contract, recapping the historic events and moving into a projection of how we will manage the completion of this very large transportation system.

The directions for ventilation control are often given in linguistic styles such as "if the airflow rate measured is small, a high value of rotation on a local fan should be chosen." In order to control the underground climate using a computer instead of a human being, both the reliability of data values measured underground and the application of human recognition of data values are required. The efficiency of data transmission is dependent on a method of checking a signal which is changed by mixing noises resulting from cases of electrical and mechanical damage to cables. In the study, fuzzy reasoning is adopted to choose a checking method for underground conditions from a normally operating state to an emergency. Fuzzy reasoning is applied to control airflow rate under the linguistic control rules given. It is shown that an effective series of linguistic control rules derived by fuzzy-sets theory is available in ventilation control when used in conjunction with an air velocity sensor, a computer and a local fan with thyristor control. Moreover, a system to make an optimum series of linguistic control rules for ventilation control is introduced.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an equation which describes the dewatering of clay slurries with polyethylene oxide. This dewatering equation is An _ kC + b where n, k. and b are empirical constants and C is the concentration of polymer solution used for dewatering. The minimum amount of polymer required for dewatering. A is determined by titration of the clay slurry with a polymer solution. In this report, the dewatering equation is applied to data obtained for a polyacrylamide dewatering sequence. Fundamental similarities between the dewatering properties of clays and the viscosity of polymer solutions were observed. These similarities were explained by correlating an equation describing polymer configuration in solution with the dewatering equation. This correlation showed that amount of polymer required for dewatering and polymer solution viscosity are both consequences of the frictional interaction of entangled polymer coils.

Mining employment, gross output, local economic contributions and productivity are typical economic indicators. However, these economic indicators play a much bigger role in the overall capacity of the industry to be heard in decision-making on a national scale. Total mining employment in the USA has decreased significantly in the last 20 years. Gross output from most of the mining sectors has also declined, except in the case of construction aggregate. However, significant gains have been made in productivity. This paper explores these statistics and comments on their overall impact on academic institutions and political decision-making.

There have been numerous recorded cases of mine explosions being initiated by falls of roof. The actual mechanism of the ignition has often been unknown. One possibility is incendive frictional sparking, particularly when the falling rock contains quartz. Another possibility that has received little attention is the increase in temperature of the air due to adiabatic compression under the falling roof. This paper analyses that possibility and concludes that falls which are extensive in plan area but not necessarily of great thickness of falling rock can, indeed, produce temperatures in excess of those required for the ignition of coal dust or methane.

Bacterial pretreatment was evaluated as a process for enhancing gold recovery from a refractory ore from Newmont Cold's Cold Quarry deposit. This ore is refractory due to sulfide locking of the gold and preg-robbing carbon. The microbe Thiobacillus ferrooxidans effectively oxidized the sulfide component of the ore, but the preg-robbing carbon continued to be active. Thiourea was examined as an alternative to cyanide for extraction of the gold from the biooxidized ore. The thiourea, coupled with CIL, was effective for gold extraction resulting in up to 89% gold recovery for the sulfidic-carbonaceous refractory ore. The thiourea gold complex appears not to be bound by the preg- robbing carbon of the ore when in the presence of recovery carbon (CIL)
