Financial analysts have often called National Mine Service Co. the only "pure play" company to the mining industry, meaning that an investment in NMS is an investment in the mining industry. As a leading manufacturer and supplier to the industry, National Mine Service does enjoy a close and direct relationship with mining. It is the only independent company that offers products and services that include mining machinery, health, safety, instrumentation, mine supplies, and reconditioning services for hydraulics, electronics, and machinery. But what is a positive relationship in periods of economic upturn can be eauallv as negative during the downturns. In fact, National Mine Service has felt the resounding blows of the current recession in the mining industry. Two-Fold Strategy Rising unemployment, corporate losses, bankruptcies, and mine closings in particular have directly affected NMS. But the company embarked on a strategy several years ago that included a two-fold approach to becoming less dependent upon the vagaries of the US coal industry. One strategy was to develop additional products and services for other mineral industries such as potash, trona, and salt and, where possible, apply the technology developed for the mining industry to industrial markets. The other strategy was to become a more international company. The objective was to make export sales a minimum of 10% of total corporate sales. Even today, NMS believes this is a good strategy as opposed to diversifying because its expertise is in mining, not in other areas. The advantages offered by mechanical mining have been demonstrated in the underground mining of coal, evaporites and other soft minerals. Mechanical mining and the advancements in automation technoloogies have been the principal drivers towards the realization of enhanced productivity in soft rock mining. For past two decades, emphasis has been placed on developing mechanical mining technology for hard rock applications, to achieve similar productivity improvements and cost reductions. The benefits of mechanical mining are numerous, particularly in an industry where market conditions continue to dictate higher production and lower costs while maintaining high safety standards. Other benefits of mechanical mining include reduced ground support and labor requirements and the elimination of blast and diesel fumes. These benefits further make this technology an attractive alternative to drill and blast for hard rock mining. Mechanical mining is conducive to full implementation of remote control and automation technologies that are under development to achieve further productivity and safety improvements in underground mining. Mine development has been the main focus area for mechanical miners by manufacturers and mining companies. Potential applications include ore body access, haulage and ventilation drifts, undercut and exploration drifts. The economic use of this technology in mine production is still considered many years away. It would need a major technological breakthrough that would make mechanical rock fragmentation competitive with the large-scale, low-cost production blasting operations.

In this paper, the results of a fundamental study involving zeta potential and turbidity determinations of solid suspensions are discussed. Illustrations of how these results are utilized to design field applications of solid grade polymers to clarify mine drainage water are presented. Other applications in different industries are also reported. The operational and economical advantages are examined.

INTRODUCTION Coal is forecast to be an increasingly important and economical source of energy for the future as the supply of oil and gas declines relative to overall energy demand and perhaps in absolute quantities produced. With the decline in productivity, especially in underground mining, in the early seventies coinciding with the need to produce greater quantities of coal for market, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place in the United States. Consolidation Coal Company (Consul) produces about 50 million tons of coal per year with approximately 66% being from underground mines. Most of the mines are located in the Appalachian Region in the States of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, and in Ohio and Illinois. Coal is produced by the room-and-pillar mining method with continuous mining machines in addition to an increasing number of longwall mining faces. Continuous mining machines will continue to be used for driving longwall development entries as well as in areas where partial extraction must be practiced in order to support the overburden rock because of surface structures or in areas that cannot be subsided, or where unfavorable geologic conditions limit the application of the longwall mining methods. ROOM-AND-PILLAR MINING METHOD Some background in the room-and-pillar mining method may be helpful to provide perspective. This method has been widely practiced since the beginning of coal mining in the region. It is a flexible system because it can provide either partial or nearly complete extraction, and coal pillars can be left where needed to support surface structures or oil or gas wells or because of unfavorable geologic conditions (Choi, Dahl and McCain, 1980).

Mineral resource management has become a well used phrase in the mining and minerals industry. Mineral resource managers are being appointed in many mining and mining-related organisations. Every mineral resource manager has his/her own ideas regarding what MRM means. There seems to be a tendency to define MRM close to home; geology would apply MRM principles to their environment and so will metallurgy, planning, mining, survey and every discipline and participant in the mining value chain. What do we do in the MRM environment and what do we aim to achieve? Surely we must have goals: what are they? Is value tracking MRM? What about best practices? Let us start at the beginning: what do we want to achieve in any mining operation? The minerals industry would like to make money, now and in the future. This calls for serious management inputs. The most important aspect is a holistic management approach regarding the total mining value chain. Process optimisation follows with application of Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) and Process Flow Management principles. Once flow processes have been established the necessary condition driven standards and measurements will be installed to ensure continuity in applicable processes.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for those of us in the coal industry -particularly in Asia -the preponderance of the power plants being planned or under construction designed to use coal as the power plant fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal, which has in turn encouraged many of us in the industry to develop new coal mines. One country that has enjoyed very substantial growth in coal production is Indonesia. This developing country of 195,000,000 people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands of Indonesia have emerged very quickly to become the third largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface mining methods. This paper will examine the surface mining of coal in Indonesia, as it continues to be an important part of the supply equation for coal in Asia.

In 1936 a young Dutch geologist discovered an exposed ore mountain in the remote, mountainous province of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. This was the beginning of one of the most overwhelming challenges ever faced in obtaining mineral resources from the earth. The challenge was to traverse mangrove swamps and reach deep into the almost impenetrable jungles of the Jayawijaya Mountains which have an elevation of 4900 meters (16,000 ft.). The target was an almost inaccessible mountain of copper ore.

PENNSYLVANIA 16803 To the Editor: With respect to the Fenvessy and Schwab article, I offer the following: As thorough as the study may be, it still has a glaring weakness. The presumption of constant supply in face of falling demand - their "low growth" case - is just wrong. It does not allow for the rapid migration, by transfer and change of major, from former high-demand programs, such as mining, to programs that have more recently obtained the cachet of job security. The figures that are shown for rapid growth in mining engineering enrollments in the period 1970-1981 are, no doubt, correct and reflect a rapid inmigration of students into mining. A similar out-migration, which began in 1982, from mining to other engineering and science disciplines is not factored into their study. Given 1983-84 enrollments, which can already be documented, it is clear that the low-growth case will, by 1985, be 50% or less of 1981. I wish students would pick their majors on the basis of their own individual abilities and interests rather than rushing lemming-like to programs that are reputed to have jobs. In the end, students will have better jobs and careers if their college majors match their talents and we, in the academic side of things, will have a livelier and more dedicated student. Lee W. The article is, unfortunately, inaccurate because of the erroneous assumptions it makes in its basic premises. To cite but two of these, class sizes will not continue at their current level, but will, in fact, alter dramatically as a function of the perceived immediate job market rather than the future trend, so that enrollments are already below those predicted. Secondly, it is patently wrong to assume that everyone who gets a degree in the mining field will continue until retirement to work in that field. People who do not have a job in the industry will get work elsewhere and often do not come back. Others will later move to different areas. My major argument, however, deals with the underlying assumptions and methodology of the survey itself, with the concomitant challenge to the subsequent conclusions. It is no great secret that the technological world is undergoing a dramatic revolution. Computer use is rapidly spreading to the point where the microcomputer will be an integral part of every mine engineer's desk. Such a tool, which for optimal benefit must be operated by knowledgeable mining engineers, will make mining much more of a science than the current level. Vertical slot raise driving from bottom up has always been a hazardous, inefficient, high cost operation. The introduction of the Simba 5 drill rig has enabled this type of raise to be drilled accurately from the top down and to be blasted in stages from the bottom up. Safety, high efficiency and low cost were the main criteria in opting for this method. Drop raises with the Simba 5 at Geco have been successfully drilled and blasted up to 115 feet, and this is close to the maximum length of raise that can be drilled and blasted efficiently with Simba 5. A look into the future would indicate a rig capable of drilling up to 200 foot raises with the same accuracy of Simba 5 to 115 feet.

Integrated information technology infrastructure is the linking of data across various applications throughout a business to gain further data-driven improvement opportunities. Decision support systems (DSS) are the various improvement opportunities that facilitate decision making for a potential optimal outcome. Integrating tera-bytes of data spread throughout a business is complex. There are tools to facilitate the development of such data-driven DSS. This paper analyzes the various tools that may facilitate the development of complex data-driven decision support systems, namely; information models, business models, data utilization model, and testing environments. A case study is presented to demonstrate how these tools facilitated the development of an automated activity-based budgeting DSS at a large-scale underground mining complex.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.

In this work, a sample (of about 100kg) of an ore considered as smectitic, not yet industrialized, from Lages-SC-Brazil, was tested for evaluation of its industrial applications. First, we characterize them by XRD, DTA, FRX, and CEC analysis. After this, the smectitic clay was changed to sodium form by treatment with sodium carbonate. Then, the homoionic sodium clay was tested for iron ore pelletizing agent, as binder of foundry sands, and drilling mud with good results.

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. Currently, the major markets for scrubber sludge are for manufacture of gypsum products, such as wallboard and plaster, and for cement. However, the quality of the raw sludge is often not high enough or consistent enough to satisfy manufacturers, and so the material is difficult to sell. Other markets, such as paper manufacture and plastics fillers, have even more stringent quality requirements and will not accept raw sludge at all. In the work described in this paper, several reagents have been examined to determine their ability to selectively improve the flotation of the unreacted limestone contaminant away from the desirable products (calcium sulfite and gypsum). The most success has been achieved using a cationic collector, which shows a higher selectivity between calcium sulfite and calcium carbonate than do the anionic collectors that were studied.

Magnetic separation using rare earth rolls (RER) and rare earth drums (RED) have seem tremendous development and use in recent years. While the process of magnetic separation is understood, the principles affecting the separation, the specific application and the optimization of RERs and REDs are less well known. This paper offers practical insight into the basic operation, selection and optimization of RERs and REDs. It is a guide for the engineer who must design a test series and select the proper equipment for that application. It provides the engineers and line operators who control the daily operation of the equipment a basic understanding of the dynamics of operation and the principles that govern the optimization of RERs and REDs.

The degree of fragmentation of dispersed systems of brittle materials such as pulverised rock has been described by a fractal dimension i.e. the fragmentation fractal. This fractal dimension represents a power law size-frequency distribution, where, in this case, the size is defined as the square root of the projected area. The existence of a fractal dimension for the number-size distribution, of the progeny of failure event, is direct evidence for scale invariance of the fragmentation process. Since a fractal dimension infers that failure mechanisms operate on all scales it has been suggested that the fractal dimension is a measure of the fracture resistance properties of materials during fragmentation. In order to investigate this a range of rocks of varying fracture toughness were broken under similar levels of impact velocity in the dynamic tensile failure of single particles. The fragmentation fractals determined from the resultant particle populations, of the breakage experiments, were monitored and are discussed.

Acid resistance, zeta potential and ESCA (electron spectroscopy. for chemical analysis) experiments were performed on emperador marble and four calcium carbonate samples (onyx calcite, travertine calcite, Iceland spar calcite and aragonite). Six fluorine-containing reagents were used to treat the surfaces of these materials: magnesium hexafluorosilicate, zinc hexafluorosilicate, sodium fluoride, zinc fluoride, strontium fluoride and stannous fluoride. The acid resistance of treated samples proved to be much higher than that of their untreated equivalents. The isoelectric point of treated samples approaches the isoelectric point of fluorite. Also, the fluorine content, as measured by ESCA, of a marble surface treated with magnesium hexafluorosilicate is much higher than that of an untreated sample. The binding energy off of fluorine and calcium the treated marble is consistent with the formation of calcium fluoride.

Separation of rare earth, especially Nd and Sm, was investigated by batch and column methods with a solvent impregnated resin. The solvent impregnated resin was prepared by impregnation of organo- phosphorous extractant whose trade name was PC-88A into a macro porous resin. The adsorption behavior of rare earth with a solvent impregnated resin in a batch method is the same as that with solvent extraction. In a column method to separate Nd and Sm, the effective separation in both adsorption and elution processes can be attained by setting suitable conditions, such as bed height, flow rate and concentration of eluent. Neodymium which is a lighter rare earth is separated from Sm an adsorption step, while Sm in which is a heavier rare earth is recovered in an elution step. From the integration of breakthrough and elution curves, yield of Nd and Sm is calculated in the condition of 100% purity. It was found from the results of life test of the resin that the solvent impregnated resin can be repeatedly utilized at least 20 times.

The expansion of gold production in Nevada's Carlin Trend over the last few years has been staggering. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the mine engineering group at Newmont Gold. Organizational changes were implemented by the company to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems. Specially developed computer software and its applications will be explained in this article as well as improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves. Scheduling procedures for the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities will likewise be presented. Ore control procedures and current mine engineering practices are discussed. Growth at Newmont Gold Expansion of production levels at Newmont Gold Co. was brought about primarily by the economic incentive to exploit increased reserves. Introduction Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels in the business world, including the mining industry. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective computer use to design underground workings combines the calculating power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of an engineer. Computer programs can perform in minutes calculations that might take several months for an engineer. But the engineer must be on guard when using computers for calculations. It is easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. However, the computer is only a sophisticated calculator. It cannot recognize logical errors or transposition of numbers. Also, some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively. In this article, selected commercial programs are discussed. These programs can provide engineers with tools to evaluate engineering designs for underground mines. The programs perform much of the tedious calculation. The engineer, though, must still make decisions and conceptualize designs. The software mentioned in this article runs on microcomputers and minicomputers. The mention of particular software, however, does not imply endorsement. Mining projects After a decision has been made to proceed with an underground mining project, more detailed evaluation of the mining method and extraction sequence begins. If a mine is already in operation, schedules and plans are needed to more clearly define future production. Existing operations can benefit from identification of bottlenecks in material movement and produce extraction options to make the mine more efficient. Detailed studies for a new mine are based on the technical engineering design. These studies provide specific details to determine equipment requirements. Detailed studies done during a project are similar to short-term planning and control carried out daily by the mining engineers. The engineering design phase includes: • Study of the infrastructures - entries, shaft, access from surface to underground; • Definition of the mine layout, hydrogeology, geotechnical considerations, transport, and ventilation; • Choice of machines and equipment; • Mine scheduling, including waste extraction and production sequencing; and • Economics, including labor and supplies. Further detailed studies include: • Blasting patterns; • Detailed geotechnical calculations; • Secondary ventilation; and • Production cycles along with coordination of the workings. Objectives The primary objective of underground mine planning is moving material out of the mine at the least cost. Development of the production schedule considers location and volume of ore units, transport distance, equipment and manpower interactions, and grade or quality of material. Two methods can be used to determine the scheduled material removal: optimization or trial and error. The microcomputer programs discussed here do not cover optimization for underground mine planning. For several reasons, optimization is often a "black box" approach. Although optimization is possible with linear programming techniques, few mining operations can be described effectively with linear equations. An interactive trial-and-error approach is desirable because engineering judgment can be inserted as a plan develops. Because of the large number of factors in an underground operation, an optimization technique seldom covers all possibilities. Few of the programs available consider all of the possible parameters. The programs use an interactive sequencing or a simulation approach and are either event-oriented or deposit-oriented. The most desirable programs offer an integrated approach. They consider a broad range of operating conditions including equipment, labor, costs, material movement, timing, and mine layout, among other factors. The two types of models generally used in designing underground workings include: • The interactive model, which requires direct, incremental input from the user. Outlines of the section to be mined may show on the screen. The engineer causes the model to develop piece-by-piece. The program may offer feedback on parameters such as tons and grade, or other values, as the section is "mined." • The simulation model, which is usually an automatic technique. Parameters related to the process are entered. The program then calculates the mining sequence over a designated time period or until the economic material is exhausted. A simulation model imitates step-by-step performance of equipment or other processes.

During the past five years the use of all-hydraulic drilling equipment has increased rapidly, and we have now reached a point where the hydraulic drill has become an alternative to be seriously considered for every drilling operation. The hydraulic drills have many advantages over pneumatic drills, but they also have certain characteristics, which makes a potential user hesitate before making the switch. And when the decision to use hydraulic drills has been made, the user then faces another choice of equal difficulty: the choice between different hydraulic systems. This paper discusses some of the factors to be taken into account when considering hydraulic drilling equipment for rapid tunneling in hard to medium hard rock. THE CHOICE BETWEEN HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC EQUIPMENT The choice between a hydraulic and a pneumatic drill is much more than just that: It is a choice between two different systems. The choice is usually based on the productivity, economy or ergonomy of the system. However, also other factors should be considered, such as service capabilities and training requirements. And finally the choice will be influenced by the need to acquire know-how in the new technology.
